Album Summary
The Renaissance is the second studio album by American hip hop artist Q-Tip, released November 4, 2008, on Universal Motown Records. The follow-up to his solo debut album, Amplified (1999), it was recorded after Q-Tip's Kamaal the Abstract (2009) was initially shelved in 2002 by his former label Arista Records and his proposed effort Open was shelved by Universal Motown, both deemed commercially inadequate by the labels. The Renaissance was produced primarily by Q-Tip and features guest contributions by D'Angelo, Norah Jones, Amanda Diva, and Raphael Saadiq. The album debuted at number 11 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 34,219 copies in its first week. It produced three singles and has sold 131,200 copies in the United States. Upon its release, The Renaissance received universal acclaim from music critics, who praised Q-Tip's lyricism and production aesthetic, and earned him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Album.

Love this style of rap
Exactly a 3.5 album. Some songs had me nodding along and the others were fine but unmemorable.
Not my thing, but I got pretty into it actually.
The 1st track is a 3/5, it isn't a bad, track it's just not something I would listen to again. The 2nd track is a 3/5, it isn't a bad, track it's just not something I would listen to again. The 3rd track is a 3/5, it isn't a bad, track it's just not something I would listen to again. The 4th track is a 3/5, it isn't a bad, track it's just not something I would listen to again. The 5th track is a 3/5, it's not a bad love track, just not something I would listen to again. The 6th track is a 3/5, it isn't a bad, track it's just not something I would listen to again. The 7th track is a 3/5, it's not a bad track, just not something I would listen to again. The 8th track is a 3/5, it's not a bad track, just not something I would listen to again. The 9th track is a 3/5, it isn't a bad, track it's just not something I would listen to again. The 10th track is a 3/5, it isn't a bad, track it's just not something I would listen to again. The 11th track is a 3/5, it isn't a bad, track it's just not something I would listen to again. The 12th track is a 3/5, it isn't a bad, track it's just not something I would listen to again. I would give the album a 3/5, it's not a bad album, it's just not something I would go out of my way to listen to.
Boring, and slightly annoying.
Smooth flow, nice lyricism
Seeing the other reviews I don’t know what I’m missing… this just seemed quite generic and I wouldn’t be listening without the 1001 project. Not terrible but not groundbreaking, 2/5

That was fun enough that I listened to it twice
i'd listen to it again, but wasn't groundbreaking
Enjoyment: 8/10 Replayability: 7/10 Cohesion: 8/10 Flow/Pacing: 7/10 Artistic Merit: 7/10 Weighted Average: 7.5/10 Review: I think this is my favorite hip hop album to date. A set of lyrics with a positive outlook over some soft, smooth beats. And nothing outrageously misogynistic nor homophobic. Liked Song(s): Won't Trade, Gettin Up, Feva Disliked Song(s): (None) Recommend? Maybe Heard Before? No
Fav: Move, We Fight/We Love L: Dance on Glass, Life is Better 3 I don't know if it petered out at the end or I just got tired of the album. I have no idea why two of the songs were forbidden on Youtube but I didn't bother finding them elsewhere. The whoops in Move were my favorite part; I'll probably be whoop cutting all day. Cover: 3.5 Nice use of track list in the cover Name: 2.5 Minecraft Parody: Mine (Move)
Some catchy tunes, some better than others 3.4
Most of the time hip-hop ends up being one of my lowest rated albums, which is why this sat in my backlog for a bit. Man, I wish I would have listened to it sooner, this was one of the best hip-hop albums I have listened to! It was such a fun listen, it's such a funky and smooth album. Standouts for me included Getting Up, We fight/We love, and Life is Better.
Tribe and Native Tongues is my touchstone for what I consider good hip hop. The Low End Theory remains a top ten favorite album to this day. All that said, I’ve never been that into Q-Tip’s solo work. This album shows me that I should give it more time; better than I remember. I like the jazzy beats and Tip is lyrically masterful with his unique voice and flow, but neo-Soul still isn’t my thing. 3.5⭐️
I never listened to Q-Tip's solo work, just Tribe. Good samples. I've always liked Q-Tips cadence and rapping style so this was an enjoyable listen with some funky beat, like ManWomanBoogie or Move. O wait, no wonder Move is groovy, its produced by J. Dilla, the rest was produced by Q-Tip. Which makes sense cause I remember hearing that Q-Tip met J. Dilla when they were young and Dilla was described to Q-Tip as a similar production sound. Overall, its got great songs, I don't think I had a song that I really didn't like. 5-stars
A good solid album
I didn't know much about Q-Tip but I see that he managed to keep the sound of A Tribe Called Quest. Very nice album, even if I'm not sure it’s an essential.
I have not heard this before. I haven’t heard any of these songs before and I don’t even think I heard of this album before. In fact I don’t think I’ve heard any of Q-Tip’s solo work. Kind of surprising because I love Tribe Called Quest, but I wasn’t listening to much hip hop at the time and it never came up on the radio. I liked the use of samples on this, which seemed to have faded away by the time this came out, or maybe was in the process of fading out in lieu of live bands or new beats generated in the studio, and the choice of samples is great. Though I think half of the tracks have live bands playing in them. Q-Tip’s flow sounds just as good as it did in the nineties, this was considered a comeback album but it seems more like picking back up after a break because it doesn’t have comeback vibes and sounds smoother than ever.
Love Tip. Gettin up probably my favorite song of his. Album is much mellower than expected
3.5/5 bland
Not for me
never heard of this guy but i like his voice and really liked this album. would love it if this site generated even a sliver more hiphop than rock albums.
Good rhymes, seems like a thoughtful dude
Hard to believe Q-Tip has been around with Tribe Called Quest since the late 80s/early 90s. The man can still rhyme with the best of them, with a delivery that never feels forced or over the top. And somehow he manages to find people to lay down the most funky, jazzy music for him to do his thing over the top of. He also has the sense to avoid the excess of a lot of hip-hop albums and keeps the running time down to 47 minutes for this one. Good stuff.
Mmm, good, we love / we hate 👍
Always cool to listen to solo projects from people involved in bands and groups you really like. Q-Tip already proved himself in the past on A Tribe Called Quest and this album has quite a bunch of similarities to that work. I like some of the samples on here a bunch. It’s an alright album, but I wish it wowed me a bit more than it actually did. Decent as it stands, but not that amazing compared to A Tribe.
Very slick and groovy.
This was fresh. I have never heard this artist before, which surprises me given it came out in 2008, but I'm grateful for something less mainstream (read: not yet played to death).
The power a ripping live rhythm section brings to a hip hop record can’t be overstated. I wasn’t really looking forward to listening, but it quickly became apparent that this different than your typical hip-hop record. Excellent production, bass is ripping. Stays fresh throughout, and has a very unique charm. Much better than what I was anticipating.
absolutely generic - plain, ordinary, no redeeming features, no innovation , no surprises, no depth
Not for me.
This was yet another dreg. I wouldn’t listen to it otherwise.
Great stuff. Move is a killer track, can’t believe I’ve never heard this before!
DUDE Where the hell have a been, under a rock? How have a not heard this before?! I loved this record and it will def be in my rotation from now on 4.99999
I really liked the jazz influence on the first song but it lost me after that. Just not my genre. 2 5 stars
This is not a genre I'm into, so I really don't know how to rate it. Not something I'd listen to again though.
I kinda liked it, but 2.8
This is a lot of funky fun. Norah Jones was an unexpected but not unwelcome guest on one of the tracks
3.5
Fun album, but mostly a forgettable one.
I can definitely tell this is 2000s Hip Hop. It's a bit quiet, and has crisp production. It's rap music. Real rap music, that is. I was just waiting for at least a few bangers, but unfortunately, they never showed up Q-Tip should have stayed with A Tribe Called Quest anyway. Favorite Track: "We Fight/We Love".
There's lots to like in this. There's plenty of funky energy and smooth rhymes. The production is really good. Favourite track: Move 3.5 rounded up.
Once again this “happy hip hop” is not for me. This shit went out of style in the 80s
- love the rap and the vibe; one that imma listen to again - reminds me of Ex-factor by Lauryn Hill - has that typical early 2000s rap hip/hop feel - smooth transitions - can imagine myself playing this in the car - especially You, We Fight/We Love Favs: - won't trade - gettin up - You - wefight/welove - good thang Something I’d listen to on a daily
okay this was actually good norah jones song got my attance
Not what I was expecting
Fin lille hip hop ting. Dog let glemt. 🤷
Hygge-Hop
Ehh it’s ok.
11. oktobar 2026. 01.47h voljela bih da ovaj sajt ima kao .5 u rejtingu, kao bilo je okej ali meni licno nothing to write home about best: won't trade
615/1089 - Damn, this might be better than Midnight Mauraders! Really great production and rhymes.
Actually didn’t mind this one despite not being a fan generally of this genre.
I “got” what he did here. He put together a band, made music and put together something new and different. He brought hip-hop and r&b and jazz together more or less. It sounds good. Not really my thing, but I “get” it and like what he’s done from a musical direction.
I turned the headache inducing nonsense off quite quickly
Was okay, easy enough for a morning, but he always follows the same dubudubudubudubuh rhythm. One trick pony and it's quite annoying. Not really my taste.
of course the only one i like is with norah jones
This is an odd inclusion to this list. It’s not groundbreaking, it’s not genre shifting or defining. It’s just sort of there. It’s toast without butter. It’s fine, but man, it could be so much better.
Q-Tip rapping over great lo-fi beats. Exactly what I'd expected from this album, but for me it just doesn't work as well anymore as it did in the 90's. Faves: Gettin Up, ManWomanBoogie
Was already expecting this to be great since I love Tribe, but this was even better than I already expected. Q-Tip has an expert ear when it comes to selecting fun, catchy, and punchy beats while he's spitting with smooth flow and fun yet thoughtful lyrics. His vocals just have so much room to breath on these instrumentals while not completely simplifying the them into a mind numbing listen. Perhaps the most interesting thing here is Dance on Glass. starts with no instrumental and puts Q-Tip's flow on full display before the beat kicks in with a pronounced kick and samples that really bring the track up as a high point on the record. Glad to finally get a chance to listen to the solo work of a legendar hip hop artist and it thankfully is just as incredible as expected.
Was good, nice sampling work.
Jazzy, dikke beats, originele sound
nope
I’m not a massive hip-hop head, but Q-Tip is a legend. I’m a Tribe fan but hadn’t heard this album. Glad I did. Playlisted and I could see it growing with more listens because the rapping skill sounds amazing.
2008 progressive hip hop, just ok You Life is better
I really hate to have this tainted perspective but some of the iconic rap groups of the 1990's always fair more favorably when in group form. De La, Tribe, Wu Tang etc. So when I see a solo Q Tip I know I won't be able to rank higher than 4 stars because those Tribe albums are so iconic I can't rank solo work at the same caliber. But, butbutbutbutbut... this is EXCELLENT. Its got all that Tribe energy and Tip vocal mastery as well as live drums, incredibly production (questlove?) And just so much unique '08 NY swag on the tracks. Worth your attention when considering how icons age in the game.
I know of Qtip, haven't really listened to much of his stuff. I definitely respect this type of hip-hop. Good stuff.
Same old, same old
Top : Gettin' Up Flop : Shaka
Buen hip hop con sonido todavía medio 90s
Chilled hip hop. Liked it more than I expected. Don't love the high pitched guy - sounds a bit like the guy from the beastie boys and a wee bit grating
Had high hopes, and a few tracks delivered with tight rhymes and good flow. Overall though it felt dated and too much going on.
Good for it’s genre
Decent for a rap album, appreciated it did not have the usual in your face rap topics from beginning to end of the album.
Pretty solid
Better than I thought it was gonna be. His lyrics were solid, beats were fine. Not terribly bloated like most rap album so that was a nice surprise.
Well knock me over w a feather…. I kind of enjoyed this. Maybe it’s the string of boring albums but this was better than anticipated
I think had I listened to this album at the time and had digested the lyrics this would score higher. Nice beats didn’t pick out a hook.
I will be honest. When I realized that Q-Tip had a solo career I had absolutely no idea about, I wasn’t excited to listen to this. Why not? Idk. Aging artist syndrome? The same reason he couldn’t get a dang label to release a follow up to his first solo effort? I loved Tribe back in the day. And when I think about where the industry was at this point, rolling with Kanye and crew, which, hey, I loved College Dropout, I did. But Q has a D’Angelo feature! I knew it the minute I heard Believe. I had to go to track listing to see if I was right. He’s getting a 5 just for that! This was so good. I would NEVER have heard it without the project. That would have been a crying shame. This is awesome. 5 Boolean: True
I don't usually listen to hip-hop albums. But this was enjoyable. Stand out tracks: Move Will I listen to it again? Probably not.
No thanks
Hip Hop is not my bag, but I gave this a full listen. Surprised it was pretty OK. (Not that it matters what I write ...)
Pretty generic, yet quite pleased with itself. I zoned out several times and stopped just over halfway. Nothing grabbed my attention.
Getting up Official Lifes is better
Chill beats but not too chill. Good rapping.
Not Tribe and not that engaging. 2/5
#469/1001. Something familiar here - the jazzy beats and the steady rhyming...aah, the tribe of course. I gave them a three, looking back it probably should have been at least a four, since this for me is more in the middle. All sorts of fun things happening in the background, nice use of love drums and other instruments, but I don't think I'd put any of these songs to fire up the dance floor.
This is the shit I'm wanting. Never quite got there with Tribe, but I always loved the jazzy sounds. Great flow, great lyrics and refined a bit more to my tastes
Actually ok rap. Feels like Lamar was inspired by this. 5/10
Nice.and chill
Excellent Hip Hop.
#439 I like Q-Tip’s flow and for large parts of this album, it felt easy going and chilled but there was plenty of energy to be found too. In truth, I probably need a revisit to take this in a bit better but I like what I heard. Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ✅ Listen before you die? ✅ Fave track(s): You Rating: 6/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Good album!
3.5/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/q-tip/the-renaissance/ From the album cover, I was expecting some 808s & Heartbreak-style hiphop. Instead, I got what is pretty much just a direct sequel to ATCQ. I didn't care for the entire album equally, but in general, it's good. Don't think I'd ever pick this over any of the ATCQ classics, given the choice.
This was actually more fun than I expected. Good beats, and, like, there's not much else I can say 👍
A rap album you can bring home to meet your parents
2.6/5 Favorite Songs: Won't Trade Gettin Up Move
Decent enough, but nothing special in my view - many others I enjoy more in this genre
