This is my first time listening to Sly & The Family Stone. I will say that out of the songs that played so far, which is 4 songs, « Just Like A Baby » is still in my head. I appreciate the soulfulness in Sly’s voice, but this appears to be a heavier and political album. That makes sense given the time it was written, which was around the Civil Rights Movement .
“Africa Talks to You” is unfortunately lost on me as it feels far too long and I’m not sure if it’s intentional that there are few words and mostly instrumental. Perhaps symbolic of Africans being taken from different tribes and thus, unable to communicate. But honestly, after this song, the album felt like a drag. I am finishing it in order, but I think this wasn’t the best Sly album to start on as I prefer funky/ disco music.
At the same time, art isn’t always about feeling good, upbeat and happy. Sometimes, it’s thought provoking, darker, sad, depressing, heavier. It’s meant to make you stop and think. It’s meant to be introspective and reflective of the world around you. I lts just okay for me as it’s not a bad album per se, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to this particular album again and I’m not sure I’ll pursue more music from Sly and The Family Stone. I am excited to take on this exploration in music though because now Just Like A Baby is in my music library.
This is my introduction to the Smiths. I dreaded listening to this as I figured it wouldn’t be my taste. I was right, but I still tried to remain open minded as I like to prove myself wrong. Unfortunately, not a single song on this album is memorable nor worth going out of your way to listen to. While it’s possible that the Smiths have music/ albums that are my taste, I’m not inclined to look into them. I also wouldn’t recommend this to anyone as a must listen to album. There’s much better music out there.
As much as I wanted to like this album, it was also fairly unforgettable for me. I found it to be such a drag and I was bored. I made it through, but I had to set a timer just so I’d be able to say I accomplished listening to the song. It’s just not my cup of tea.
I will say, I only recognize Cold Play from the songs Yellow and Viva La Vida, so it was nice to hear their other songs. Admittedly, I did fall asleep after Clocks played, so perhaps it was a bit boring to for my taste. But still good to sleep to I suppose haha.
I’m only familiar with 2 Gorillaz songs, Feels Good Inc. and Clint Eastwood. After listening to the Gorillaz album, I think I will stick to those two songs. It’s not bad music, but it isn’t great either. I don’t resonate with them as much as other artists, so about halfway through the album, it felt like a drag.
I was already dreading the 2 hours as soon as I saw it. I procrastinated on this, but all the talking is getting on my nerves. I just want to hear and judge the music. I used it as background noise and that’s how I made it through, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to this album again. I respect the heck out of Duke though because he had so much influence on some of my favorite musicians.
Admittedly, I’m only familiar with Joni Mitchell’s original version of Big Yellow Taxi. Her voice is very distinctive and actually sort of reminds me of Karen Carpenter of the Carpenters. This was meh overall. Not awful, but not great either and not memorable.
I am only semi-familiar with Oasis’s song Wonderwall. I am not resonating with this group. So it gets a 1 for me as I didn’t want to finish this, but I chose to as I said I would listen to every album given me to in its entirety!
Honestly dreaded listening to this one as well. I just don’t enjoy this type of music. I made it through the album though because the point was to listen and have a better understanding of music as a whole. I can appreciate that Radiohead is for particular individuals pallets, but it’s just not mine. It’s a 2 for me.
Of all the albums I’ve listened to so far, this definitely the most boring. I don’t get the “psychedelic” label as nothing about this is trippy or even remotely interesting. It was truly a drag to get through this. I didn’t even want it as background noise, but atlas, I made it through. I don’t know why this is recommended as a must listen… I wasn’t familiar with The Byrds before this and I’m 10000% certain I could’ve gone the rest of my days without ever hearing this. I’d be fine..
When I played this album, I audibly said “What the heck is this??” I just finished this album and I still don’t know what to say. It’s just a 1 for me. No other comments necessary.
I had an insanely visceral reaction to this song. Never heard of Fela Kuti before this and while I respect his mission, it legit felt like my throat locked up. I couldn’t breathe. Not a fan.
I have no opinion. Nothing about this stuck out or was memorable. At the same time, it wasn’t the most awful thing I’ve heard so I suppose a 3 is fine. It’s just okay. The way Billy’s voice is, particularly in the first song was incredibly annoying though. It sounded like a scene kid style of singing, so obnoxious, kind of like “Tonight will be the night that I will fall for you” kind of annoying.
I haven’t heard Bowie besides a few lines of “Let’s Dance” and Mick Jagger’s and his version of Dancing in the Street. This was boring, but solid background music for getting my work done hehe.
Despite knowing of Britney, I never went out of my way to listen to any of her songs. She’s talented and I’m hopeful that she’ll continue to improve mentally and emotionally!
Very poignant, especially giving the current political climate. I’m not incredibly familiar with Public Enemy, but this was solid.
Just off the title alone, this seems like it will be interesting. Calling yourself Garbage and creating an album with the same title is certainly a choice. It’s hours after the fact and not a single song was memorable. Just a blah album and artist overall.
A lot of the albums that I’ve been suggested thus far are so underwhelming and forgettable. Welp, another one bites the dust.
I don’t feel any particular way about this album. It’s was short and to the point. I suppose that’s all I have to add haha.
Now this is something I can get behind! I’ve added The Boy In The Bubble and Graceland to my playlist! Paul Simon was my preferred artist in Simon & Garfunkel! This album was a delight!
I don’t know what this is, but it’s just.. not good. It’s like uwuuuu religion sucks, edgey teen type aesthetic. No wonder I never heard of this or the Sex Pistols. This is the garbage they were putting out??? I don’t recommend anyone listen to this. Could’ve gone my whole life without ever hearing this album and I’d be fine…
The ridiculously long albums tend to be amongst my least favorite. Over 2 hours is crazy. Just split it up into two albums if you must. Also, I’m not sure I do really grasp the concept of this album. Was it supposed to just be covers??
The hard rock genre is truly my least favorite. All this hooting and hollering is just not my vibe… I can honestly say that I likely won’t check out anymore more of their music.
Yawn. 🥱 I don’t understand the criterion that is used to compile this list, but so many of the albums that I’ve been recommended recently weren’t worth listening to…
I don’t care for OutKast in general. Though, I suppose it’s good I’ve finally heard all of Hey Ya.
I enjoy certain Rolling Stone songs, but this was not quite my hitting those notes. I don’t really resonate with this album.
I am not a big country fan. I have few exceptions to that. The Band unfortunately doesn’t make that cut. I didn’t like any of the songs.
I was not a fan of the hooting and hollering that went on within this album. It was also a drag and annoyed me quite a bit.
Okay so far it sounds like mariachi at the start.
OH WAIT THEY STARTED SINGING. Yeah no this is corny and idk how they have 13 albums lol.
Dictionary has got to be the most childish song I’ve ever heard grown men sing… stop it.
Okay I love the Temptations, so I’m expecting to be wowed. We shall see.
I enjoyed this album. The Temps will always have some of my favorite songs!
I’ve only heard of the song Seven Nation Army. I wonder what the criterion is for these albums. Nothing about this seems influential.
I really enjoyed Suzanne and Winter Lady! This was a cool album.
I will say that while I’ve heard of Ozzy and Black Sabbath, it’s not my favorite genre. However, I did kind of enjoy this! So that’s a win haha.
I’m all for listening to music in a foreign language. This just… wasn’t it lol.
This was okay. I have no opinion
“Come on Eileen” is the only song I know from this group and prior to this, I realize I’ve never seen them before lol.
Yeah come on Eileen is the only song I needed to hear. I fear I can see why they were one hit wonders.
Oh Brother. Not this band again. I didn’t like them the first time. 😭
Okay update after I listened: I fear Chest Fever struck a cord for me. I will give them a 3 now lol
Just no. This was a waste a 36 minutes. The screeching hurt my ears.
Not a huge Bowie fan, so we shall see how this goes.
Still not a huge Bowie fan haha
I’ve never listened to Janelle Monáe before this. Unfortunately this is not my kind of music. But she’s a beautiful and talent woman!!
This was unremarkable. Truly wasn’t worth the listen. I found myself wondering why I was listening to it, and I had only made it a quarter way through.
2 hours is crazy. Just split it into two albums. They get docked a point just for that. Now onto the listening aspect…
Update post listening: the first song is crazy. Choosing to sing wake up and make love to me and saying “wake up in horny morning mood” is both beyond cringe and pitiful.
Overall, a terrible album and two hours I want back. On another note, shout out to the solid Brits of the 60s that released trailblazing music in the British Invasion (The Stones, The Beatles, and The Kinks) I’m sad for y’all that this is garbage that came after you.
I am not a country fan, so this unfortunately didn’t strike a cord with me.
The album cover art creeps me out, so docked for that. Let’s see about to music now!!
Update: Not a fan….
I’ve heard the name Willie Nelson. However, I hadn’t listened to anything before today. Unfortunately, I do not like country, but I will give this one a 3 despite that because Willie seems like a stand up guy!!
It’s just not my kind of music. It’s not terrible, but it’s not great. It’s all very one note and monotonous.
“You’re My Best Friend” is one of my favorite Queen songs. Also loved Bohemian Rhapsody. #LongLiveFreddieMercury
I have no opinion. It wasn’t for me though.
I haven’t listened to much of Marley’s discography before this, but I really enjoyed this album!! Reggae is always a vibe.
I don’t feel any particular way about this album as well.
I’m not sure how to feel about this as is.
I didn’t care for XTC with the first album that was recommended for me to listen to. I feel the same way. Not a fan of the music.
I don’t think this album is bad, but it’s not my favorite either. Just meh.
I’m only semi- familiar with the song “American Idiot”. Haven’t heard any other Green Day besides this.
Update post listening: I don’t love the grungy kind of music, but it’s not awful. Just not my taste.
This just wasn’t my type of music. Very strange.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t my cup of tea
This reminded me of meditation music. Very soothing.
I don’t really care for this either. I’m not very familiar with either artists.
I only liked the one album they did with Nico and Andy Warhol. I prefer her voice over anyone else.
This was just meh for me. Not bad, but not memorable either.
I have heard of Sam Cooke, particularly for the song a Change is Going to Come, but that’s the only Sam Cooke I know.
Update: I still only prefer that song.
I only know Sexy Back. I think that’s how I’d like to keep it.
Unfortunately, this is not my vibe. I’ve also never heard of this individual before. Very boring and odd.
I enjoyed this album more than I thought. Eric Clapton is pretty cool. I like “I Shot The Sheriff” the most.
I don’t have an opinion either way.
I am not a huge fan of this genre. So unfortunately, this misses the mark for me.
I LOVE AL GREEN AHHHH! OOH BABY LETSSSSSSSS.. WE OUGHTA STAY TOGETHERRR! Immediate 5 star, no notes.
I don’t listen to a lot of Adele. She’s not my favorite artist. Her voice is cool, but this is not an album nor artist that I resonate with. I remember vibing to Rolling In The Deep though. But I find her music to be too depressing and somber for my taste. So I’ll give her a 2 as she is talented, but this is not for me.
I didn’t feel any particular way about this album.
OH BROTHER, HOW MANY LCD ALBUMS MUST I SUFFER THROUGH??? I don’t like this kind of music. I made it through though. Please no more LCD. Thanks. 🙂↕️
Unfortunately, I am not a Jimi Hendrix fan, so this did not hit a note with me.
Literally what was this album??? It’s a no for me dawg
Very bleh to me. I’d never heard of them before this and I think I would’ve been fine without them.
I liked Pre-Road Downs. That’s the only song that was a vibe for me. The rest was bleh for me.
I only knew the songs “Free Fallin” which is my all time favorite Tom Petty song. I also knew “I Won’t Back Down”. That was my intro to Tom Petty. To be quite honest, I don’t care for this album, but those songs were great.
I love the classic Randy Newman “You Got A Friend In Me” from Toy Story and Monk’s theme song “There’s A Jungle Out There.” The latter being my introduction to Newman. I straight up don’t like this album. Dropping the n word with the er is absolutely nasty work, especially in the 70’s. This was a trashy way to attempt to “clown” the politically and racially divided Southern US. Absolutely not. It’s a no from me dawg.
The album cover is so???? Either way, I don’t feel any particular way about this album.
Unfortunately, this misses the mark for me. It made for solid background music though.
Big up to Kendrick. I am not a huge fan of rap, but some of these songs were a vibe! Big ups to Kendrick!!
This is a no for me. I don’t like a single song on this album. Granted, I’m also not a rock fan, so this isn’t appeasing to me either. I firmly believe that quite a few of these suggested albums on the 1001 albums list are neither influential to mainstream media nor worth going out of one’s way to listen to them. It feels a bit nichey right now.
I enjoy Nina Simone’s often thought provoking music, but this album was bit too somber for me. So it’s a 3
I love Band on the Run. The fact that this album was released on my birthday is more than enough.
Some songs were a bit too somber for my taste, but I really enjoyed Mary’s House.
I have heard of the Grateful Dead. But this was my first time listening to them. They were solid!
I didn’t like this.. at all.
This album was middle of the road for me as I didn’t feel any particular way about the Allman Brothers
This album was just okay for me.
I shake my head everytime I see a ridiculously long album. Why?? Just divide the album into two parts. Though this album was comically bad. I developed a headache and had to pause before I could finish it.
I am once again indifferent to an album. This wasn’t great, but it wasn’t terrible either. A solid 3.
Wasn’t a fan and haven’t heard of this group before this.
This misses the mark for me unfortunately.
I’m assuming this is an album of covers? Not a huge fan as I love the OG songs much more. But this was kind of cute.
This was my intro to Depeche Mode. Not too shabby, but also not something I’d go out of my way to listen to. Also the breathing bit at the end of I want you now was had me like huhhh ?????? Very weird.
