Frank Zappa
2/5
What a strange ass album. Grateful that Borno sent me down the path to listen to his congressional hearing on parental advisory music. Additionally, Linc Dawg showed me one of this better songs: Watermelon in Easter Hay

Jane's Addiction
4/5
I was always kind of anti-Janes Addiction. This was a pretty decent album, I will admit.

Queen
3/5
The start of this album feels NOT very Queeny. Killer Queen might be the only song I know on this album. I suppose this album is surfacing to me that I don't know Queen all that well! Super interesting and unexpected album.
Bon Jovi
4/5
Nice coming off of the Queen album onto this. A handful of recognizable tracks compared to the single Queen track. I think this is a fairly listenable album. My gripe with something like this album is this: it feels like they are really trying to go hard vs. ACTUALLY being hard.
Queen
3/5
Queen to Bon Jovi to Queen? Worried that I am going to get over-Queened. Half a track in and I am already feeling that this is much Queenier ;). This Queen album is wildly better than Sheer Heart Attack. Crazy that these were put out the same year. This one is loosing steam for me. I liked the album to start and it started to fall off for me.
Isaac Hayes
2/5
Yes! Listening to the first track now and thinking about the hip hop songs that have sampled this. This is a jammy album. I could throw this on and groove. Okay, now they are getting a bit excessive.
Green Day
4/5
At first I was surprised to see this one. Now, I am good with it. Will be my highest rated album thus far because it definitely was a piece of my youth.
Santana
3/5
Fire! But also a little jammy
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Shoot, my rating didn't take. I had hesitations coming into this album. I remember making fun of my mom with my dad singing Joni Mitchell. It was listenable, but not tremendously enjoyable.
Rage Against The Machine
5/5
Anger in an album. It was revolutionary at the time. Great workout album. Love that I can picture the matrix when wakeup comes on.
FREEDOM!!! YEAHHHHHHHHH RIGHHHTTTTT
Parliament
4/5
This fucks!
The Smiths
4/5
Reminds me of 500 days of summer...mmmmm Zoey
The White Stripes
3/5
Fell in love with a girl is a JAM! I used to vilify this album because I thought it was too popular. I will admit that it is pretty good.
David Bowie
3/5
Yessss! I loved this album when it came out. It is so interesting how albums are associated with memories. This album (particularly the Lazarus song) is haunting because it came out 2 days before he died. From what I remember learning about this album is that he knew he was at the end when he recorded these songs. I always take this album in from the perspective of a dying man.
Lazarus carries this album from a 2 to a 3 for me.
The Velvet Underground
2/5
Thought I would like this album a lot. It was just kind of meh.
The Velvet Underground
1/5
I think I went into this album with a pretty negative attitude about getting two Velvet Underground albums in a row. I was not pumped on yesterdays album and I think I like this one even less.
Air
3/5
Interesting. Feels like the precursor to Daft Punk. Less refined, but certainly glimpses in there.
Frank Zappa
2/5
What a strange ass album. Grateful that Borno sent me down the path to listen to his congressional hearing on parental advisory music. Additionally, Linc Dawg showed me one of this better songs: Watermelon in Easter Hay
Japan
1/5
Poor mans David Bowie + Depeche Mode + The Cure? Don't love it.
The Beach Boys
2/5
I think it was fine. Didn't get through the whole album, but not offensive.
Muddy Waters
3/5
This album/Muddy Waters has a vibe! This album feels like NOLA to me (musically prolific, full of emotions, full of an energy).
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Hard to argue with the boss! Not super familiar with this album, and it was pretty solid. Glad this was on the list on a Friday. Very listenable.
Fugees
4/5
This is a 4.4. Going to have to round down because of the skits and because some of the non-hits don't strike me as hard as the hits do.
R.E.M.
2/5
I suppose I am not sure why this album makes it over Out of Time or Automatic for the People.
Jacques Brel
1/5
What are we doing here? What album did this knock out? Whos man is this?
5/5
Could it be the first 5? Am I rating things based on nostalgia vs. quality? Maybe.
Talking Heads
3/5
I of course love Once ina Lifetime, but the rest of the album was just kind of okay to me.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Is Exodus the only track that I actually know on this album? Ohhhhh we jamming! What are the first 4 tracks of this? Everything after that is FIRE!
Bauhaus
1/5
Effectively the bridge between the B52s and NIN. What are we doing here? If I never heard this again that would be indication of a life well led.
Queens of the Stone Age
4/5
Awesome album! Didn’t get through a lot of it.
Nick Drake
3/5
Haters weren’t into it, but I think I liked it
David Bowie
2/5
No hits! What’s up?
LCD Soundsystem
4/5
When someone great is gone!!!
The Lemonheads
2/5
Not great, wouldn’t listen again
Frank Black
3/5
Haven’t listened yet, but I will on this drive!
New Order
2/5
I find myself getting upset when the hits I like from people on this list aren’t on the albums :/
Jurassic 5
5/5
Smoking extreme spinach!
Bob Dylan
2/5
I have always been pretty neutral on Bobby D. Listenable but not necessarily enjoyable from my seat.
Billy Joel
5/5
So funny how we view these albums through the lens of what memories they trigger. I am rating this album well because there are so many songs that I recognize and have solid memories of.
Thelonious Monk
1/5
Love and remember the beer fondly. I can say that there is a lot of talent on this album, but I am not going to seek it out necessarily because it is more of technical listen than I typically enjoy.
2Pac
3/5
2Pac is an interesting one for me. I feel like I SHOULD like him more than I do. Coming off of Thelonius, it is a weirdly similar feeling in the sense that I know I should appreciate him more. Still pumped on listening to this one today.
Violent Femmes
4/5
God, I saw the Violent Femmes live right before covid. It was not an enjoyable show. Outside of blister in the sun, I feel like they are kind of a hard listen. Okay, Kiss Off is grreat too. I am eating my words, this whole album is pretty dank. I think a live version of ~50/60 somethings singing this stuff is just lost on ya boy.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
I feel like this album is a good album, but I am expecting a Bob Marley album and it fell short of the one we listened to a few weeks ago. The story behind how this album came to be was interesting though :)
The Temptations
2/5
Listenable. Not the best album, but not the worst.
The Beta Band
3/5
I feel like there are 10 more albums that came out in 2004 that are exponentially better than this one. What are we doing here?
I spoke too soon. It is an okay album. Liking it better than the temptations yesterday.
Jean-Michel Jarre
1/5
What in the world?
Fiona Apple
3/5
Criminal makes this album go from 2 to 3
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
3/5
I thought I would love this more. Maps really makes this, huh?
Grant Lee Buffalo
3/5
I think the quote on the first song that really stuck with me: It kills me to think, that I'm no longer living just looking for excuses to drink. It hits especially hard coming off of a bender from this past weekend.
The Flaming Lips
3/5
Yoshimi and Do You Realize are fantastic. Most of the Flaming Lips stuff is so weird. This is no exception. I saw them live in my early 20s and thought it was one of the strangest shows I have ever seen.
1/5
Am I really embarking in a 2 + hour album today? Here goes! Yeah, I got through the first album of this double disc'n. I am done here.
Leonard Cohen
2/5
Not going to seek it out again. Getting a better understanding of why folks rate these things the way that they do (legacy over quality sometimes).
The Isley Brothers
3/5
Whose that lady?! Listenable. Baby making music for sure!
The Jesus And Mary Chain
1/5
Somewhat unlistenable for me. I get that this kicked off shoegaze, but man it was a lot of noise.
Ice T
3/5
It was fine. I thought it felt a bit jokey.
fIREHOSE
1/5
There are simply some albums that I won't understand the reason they made the list. This is one of those albums.
The Cars
4/5
Let the good tunes roll! This is a banger of an album. That is all.
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
Tribe is awesome...but I am a bigger fan of other albums. I left my wallet in el segundo and can I kick it are the clear winners of this album. You know, I think I was just put off by the first long song on this album, it is actually better than I was originally thinking.
Meat Puppets
1/5
Not sure what this was, but I knew my uncle CK was a fan for some reason. For me...this ain't it!
Mudhoney
1/5
Meatpuppets Mudhoney, what will they come up with next?
Fred Neil
3/5
A strange welcomed change from the other stuff we have been hearing. Y'all make it to the end of the album? What?!
Led Zeppelin
5/5
The perfect album does not exi...
What a treat of an album to tap into on a Friday. It is effectively a Led Zeppelin greatest hits album if you ask me.
Deep Purple
3/5
This (candidly any) album is tough to jump to after letting the Led out. I would appreciate it more if it were on the heels of a crappy album.
Isaac Hayes
3/5
Not what I expected. Good working music.
ABBA
3/5
I mean, I get it!
The Who
2/5
Christmas sounds like the Beatles! This album is just a bit too meandery for me. All songs sound like a derivative of the pinball wizard. I am kind of over this one.
Metallica
2/5
A little intense for a Friday at 8 AM. Also, I have a coworker that has hitched his entire identity to Metallica...he kind of sucks so I am not really listening through an objective lens.
Nine Inch Nails
4/5
The highs are high enough that it deserves a 4.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
1/5
Quite the departure from yesterday. We will see how much of this I can get through. Made it through the first album. Whatever.
Jethro Tull
2/5
I am into it. Had no idea this was a concept album. Okay. I think I can only handle like 4 consecutive Jethro Tull songs.
Mike Ladd
2/5
Its kind of a confusing album, huh?
Adele
4/5
The marketing genius of this album is so sick!
Elliott Smith
3/5
Couldn't take all of the sad yesterday. It was an okay album.
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
Where are my boss hits on this one? Okay, reading what it was in response to made me appreciate more.
Stan Getz
2/5
Not my cup of tea, but the story makes it more palpable.
3/5
I get so excited when I know the first two songs and then so bummed when I don’t know the rest. Boosting it up because of the story in 1,001 albums
Aretha Franklin
3/5
A classic. Hard not to like Aretha! Shaped my date night music on Friday night.
Kendrick Lamar
4/5
The highs were high. Good enough album.
Everything But The Girl
2/5
Not for me. I suppose I see a version of the world that is clubbing to this stuff.
Johnny Cash
2/5
story makes it cooler
Fugazi
2/5
Still need to read the stuff about this
Wu-Tang Clan
4/5
Interesting album. I was more excited for it before devouring the whole thing. Still really solid.
Public Enemy
2/5
The description in the book made me like it a bit more. However, fight the power might be one of the only listenable track on here.
Johnny Cash
4/5
Really really enjoyed this. Should maybe be 5
Drive Like Jehu
2/5
Still need to read the description. Didn’t love
The KLF
3/5
I suppose this style needs to be represented. Isn’t necessarily for me, but I still respect it.
Fleet Foxes
3/5
It is a fine enough album is what I will say. I like that they call out in the write up that they are a "nature band"
The Allman Brothers Band
2/5
I didn't realize the Allman bros were so jammy! I didn't love this album, but I certainly loved the story on how it came to be.
Afrika Bambaataa
2/5
Going to say the first two songs were great. Not as interested after that.
Stephen Stills
3/5
I dare say pleasant
Country Joe & The Fish
2/5
Some albums are just a mystery to me as to why they made it into the list.
Steely Dan
2/5
First couple tracks were bangers! Then it kind of fell off for me personally.
The Clash
2/5
Found myself skipping through a lot of this album. I miss my book so I can read why these are so important.
Massive Attack
1/5
Not a fan. I am sure when I read the write up my opinion might change.
Haircut 100
2/5
Acceptable, not exceptional.
Suzanne Vega
1/5
Not a Suzanne Vega fan sans Tom Diner I guess...
Jack White
2/5
I know that folks have a hard on for Jack White. I think he is fine...that is all
Marvin Gaye
4/5
It is a nice sensual album, but hard not to compare it to whats going on. Like that it was made for love.
Elvis Presley
3/5
Not bad. I actually think it increased my likeness for Elvis.
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
2/5
A little haunting. I don't know what to say on this one actually.
Robert Wyatt
1/5
Severely not a fan!
The Stone Roses
3/5
Felt almost really familiar. I was impressed.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
The bangers bang hard on this one. The backstory on this album too is clutch!
4/5
What a great album. I have no complaints.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
The bangers really carried this album in my opinion.
Raekwon
3/5
A little TOO much gangsta for this sensitive soul ;)
Beck
4/5
Pleasant/chill album. A few songs that I have revisited since listening.
The Mamas & The Papas
4/5
Solid album! I think that I am a fan. I can't imagine what the world was like when this came out.
Van Morrison
4/5
This album hit SO GOOD for me yesterday.
Pixies
2/5
They are highlighting this as the album that everything fell apart. Why profile it then? Maybe into dig for fire.
Kendrick Lamar
5/5
The highs are high enough on this album that it makes up for some of the skits and dumb stuff on there.
King Crimson
4/5
Meant to snag a picture of who this influenced and send it to Jesser. Cool album with a good amount of notable inspirations for other bands to come.
The Prodigy
3/5
The hits on this one rip. I am excited to read about that one when I am back near my book :)
Robert Wyatt
2/5
This is the second Robert Wyatt album that has appeared on this list. Not sure who is selecting this weirdness to be part of this list, but here we are. Fell asleep listening to this one.
Mercury Rev
3/5
Feels like the Flaming Lips want to be this band.
Killing Joke
2/5
Some albums I just need to see the write up of why it makes it into this list...
Lou Reed
3/5
Hmmmmm how do I want to rate this one. Perfect Day, Walk on the Wild Side and Satellite of Love are such fantastic jams. Otherwise I am kind of neutral on this album.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
3/5
Take Five is so recognizable, but I am not sure from what...nice Monday morning work music.
Dirty Projectors
3/5
Mids. Just mids.
Lorde
5/5
I have had the debate for years if it is this album or her first album is better. Both are so fire.
Hookworms
3/5
Very neutral. Not bad or good
Duke Ellington
3/5
Really actually pretty pleasant.
Fleetwood Mac
2/5
Anxious to read why this one made it. I am looking for the hits, but none in sight.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
Listenable. Good background music.
Brian Eno
1/5
What are these noises? Why?
Mike Oldfield
2/5
Just...weird!
Coldplay
5/5
Is this a 5 star album on it's own? Probably not. Is it a 5 star album because it was pivotal in my upbringing? Absolutely.
Songhoy Blues
1/5
Definitely going to need to see the write up on this one. Can't say I am tremendously into it.
Wire
2/5
Can't say that I was terribly into this one...
Julian Cope
2/5
Another one of those "what are we doing heres"
Kelela
2/5
Marvin Gaye
4/5
I go out of town once and I miss a banger like What's Going On?!
Soundgarden
4/5
Could be edited down a bit, but great album nonetheless.
The Monkees
3/5
Kind of like a poor mans Beattles...except with weirdly more pedo vibes.
Bert Jansch
2/5
I understand why it makes the list. Doesn't mean that I have to enjoy it.
Radiohead
2/5
Can't find the write up in either book :(
Neil Young
4/5
Really liked it more than I thought I would. Neil has been in my life a bit more recently for whatever reason.
Jeff Buckley
3/5
Pretty deep and sad album!
The Auteurs
2/5
I heard a few bands being inspired in there. Thought it was okay.
Milton Nascimento
3/5
Knowing this was so inspired by the Beattles and how it came about boosted my rating.
Jeff Beck
4/5
Pretty damn good. I like Rod Stewart as a rocker.
New Order
4/5
Surprised at how much I like this album.
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
A few bangers but wasn't all THAT impressed overall.
Joy Division
2/5
Mmmmmm nore of a New Order guy. Did like the piece of the write up that talked about how this was an album one would listen to right before committing suicide! Dark.
Basement Jaxx
2/5
A little jarring and a little much, but really liked the origin story in the book.
Devendra Banhart
3/5

Felt like the precursor to Jurassic 5 which I was very into.
Arcade Fire
4/5
Outside of No Cars Go this album preceeded my fandom.

Frank Sinatra
3/5
Fell off after Girl from Eboneba

3/5
Crazy to hear the Phil Spector story!

Beatles
4/5
Great album interesting to read about all of the differences in there.
Sex Pistols
3/5
Good! The highs were definitely high :)
The Teardrop Explodes
2/5
This one probably shouldn't be on the list.
Rocket From The Crypt
3/5
You can't appreciate somewhat bad music until you hear REALLY crappy music like Birthday Party. There were a few headbangers on this one.
The Birthday Party
1/5
Pretty unlistenable for this guy.
The White Stripes
3/5
Never have been a white stripes type of fella.
Paul Simon
2/5
Fine. It was fine.
Radiohead
4/5
Everything….in its right place.

Fun Lovin' Criminals
3/5
I suppose I am still confused how this made the list, but whatever.
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Shockingly good!
4/5

2/5
Kind of odd, but whatever.
Britney Spears
3/5

PJ Harvey
3/5
A little whiny, but here we are.
Dusty Springfield
3/5
Fun to read WHY this album matters at all. Lots of racial cross over
The Police
4/5
I'll send an SOS to the world! I can confidently say this is an album that truly belongs here.
The Hives
4/5
This album is objectively not a 4, but it was pivotal in my upbringing.
Arctic Monkeys
4/5

The Cure
3/5
A little meandery, but not bad.
The Doors
4/5

Marty Robbins
3/5
Surprisingly pleasant, actually.
The Chemical Brothers

I suppose I can appreciate it for what it was and why it was on the list, but was pumped to have some Beatles bangers on a Friday and was disappointed with what I got :/

John Lennon
2/5
I think I understand the Yoko breaking up the Beatles sentiment now.
Pink Floyd
3/5
What an odd collection. Interesting to read the why behind it though.
Elton John
3/5
Surprised by a few bangers. But the album overall...mids.
N.W.A.

Blood, Sweat & Tears
3/5
Fun to talk with Kevin Peaslee on this one. Good stuff.
Slipknot
1/5
What are we doing here? The fact that this nixed another album off of the list is so maddening to me.

I wish the tracks were separated out. It would have been a 4 star with that.
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
So pumped on it I had to find a peloton class with some Curtis Mayfield.
Public Enemy

Decent. I know that this album was much more influential than I am giving it credit for, but I just wasn't feeling it necessarily.

Echo And The Bunnymen
2/5

2/5
Just not...into it.

3/5
I feel like I am getting more critical. I did target a Deep Purple themed peloton ride after this one.
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
Haven't given a 5 in a while. This one is just about a flawless album. Also...Stevie Nicks went to Skyline sooooo you gotta support.
D'Angelo
3/5
