Adele
2/5
It's disgestible radio soul/pop/piano-stuff, I think she's at her best when the songs have the energy to make her voice actually feel huge (Rolling in the Deep is a modern pop classic for a reason) but the more slow, ballady stuff is not something that was interesting or even anything I picked up on as notable, it's just there (the most I reacted to was the Lovesong cover but that's it) I don't hate this but I don't care for it really, even the good songs

Ute Lemper
5/5
It's crazy to think this is how I find out about this album, not only did I never knew of this but it contains so many great and interesting songwriters, many of whom are my absolute faves. Initially I thought this was a covers album but... no? Like how the hell do you get two of the Divine Comedy guys, Elvis Costello, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, and fucking Scott Walker in the same albums to write you songs?? They all come together in their own songs to write and work on different songs of course but I like that Ute's voice/style (or what I asume is her own direction) is not lost, this sort of modern take on grand cabaret theatrical stuff and baroque pop with different influences depending on the featured writer. It's that kind of balance of a seasoned performer who has a vision and a strong voice and incredible writers that nets an album this interesting and exciting to me, which is surprising to me because I'm not somebody who likes, let alone is even interested in cabaret theatrics most of the time they fall flat by trying too hard whereas this feels like it avoids all the worst tropes of the more theatrical genres and remains all the aspects that are fuller with attitude and gusto which I think MANY cabaret/theatrical styled albums sorely miss for me. I appreciate the range in sound and writing, but especially the final song Scope J. The closest this book has ever gotten to adding a late era Scott Walker song and immedeately its obvious how his style at the time took over the sounds, gone is the theatrics and in are the piercing drones and dissonances that transform Ute's vocals into a banshee. I really cannot get enough of it, I possibly would go as far as to give it a 5/5 on here and 9/10 on rym on future listens because I had a great time and I love whenever someone makes music I don't think works for me work for me. Awesome surprise

The Monks
3/5
The entire concept surrounding The Monks is still one of the funniest things ever, like, what do you mean a bunch of American G.Is stationed in Germany got bored and made a band where they wore monk costumes and played proto punk? It's silly but it works by the simple identity they built up for themselves especially when their music is as unusual as their entire presentation. Not so much your average garage rock thing as they add organ or really squelchy and noisy guitar riffs, sometimes adding silly humor or commentary on 6s things. All these simple things add up to, while not an amazing album it is one that I enjoyed quite a bit.

Janelle Monáe
4/5
The kind of high concept theatrical thing I just love, not only is it ambitious, it manages to land hard on its two feet by the end because of how much care is put on its concept. I think Janelle manages to make the the aesthetics and the grandiosity of basically a musical adaptation of Metropolis feel just as grand which I don't think many people can get right, but even more have so many styles of music come together so tightly and again, come out like a fully formed package instead of an overlylong mess, I guess it helps I love the way everything sounds. So yeah this is an absolute win, I need some more listens to truly get into the details of the lyrics but I'm loving it

Sonic Youth
3/5
Much, MUCH better than Goo which is surprising for the straight follow up. I think it helps that they drop the 2cool4u attitude and just go back to their usual demeanor that is more disinterested but works in making the music not feel, well, of its era Even more its how they add back in some of the sounds they played with before even Daydream Nation, but with a little more focus. The biggest cons in my opinion is that it is too long and some songs can be a bit grating but otherwise, pretty good.
