David Bowie · 1 likes
4/5
I found this album to be super consistent from the first song to the last. It felt like listening to a story rather than an album, with each song serving as a chapter. The concept was admittedly "odd", but it was in a way that I truly enjoy. I've, of course, heard of David Bowie before. However, this was my first real introduction to him (I've only heard one song of his prior). After listening to this album, I'm excited to hear more from him. His music is like nothing I've heard before, and I really enjoyed it.

I had a very difficult time getting into this album. I thought it was cool conceptually, and I did find myself really enjoying the musicianship here. That's about as far as I go, however. The vocals weren't to my liking, and I found everything to be a little one-note. It was a chore for me to push through the album as, to put it simply, it just bored me.

The Clash
3/5
A decent album. The Clash is not a band I have heard of before, so I didn't know what to expect going into it. The title track and Guns of Brixton were probably my favorites on the album. After a certain point, however, I did start to feel as if some of the songs were repetitive. The instruments were great, but the vocals I personally didn't care for for a majority of the album.
Adele
4/5
I grew up listening to Adele, and she is always a joy to listen to. I only knew a few songs from the 25 album going into it, and I truly enjoyed every song this album had to offer. Adele has one of the best voices in the modern era. Looking at this album as a retrospective of her life story at the age of 25, and me being around that age currently, I felt I resonated with a lot of the songs more than I would have if I heard them when the album first released. I would definitely listen to the whole thing over again.
George Michael
5/5
I didn't realize going into my first listen of this album just how many George Michael songs I was familiar with. This album was a treat from the first song to the last, with only one I didn't really enjoy. Michael is so talented and so diverse in his range. Faith and One More Try were night and day when it comes to their vibes, and both are absolutely phenomenally done by Michael. I enjoyed every moment of my time spent listening through this album.
Isaac Hayes
3/5
As a South Park fan, I was incredibly excited to get an Isaac Hayes album. His voice never disappoints. If you are an R&B or Soul fan you will undoubtedly love it, but for me the songs were too long. There are 4 in total, and one of them lasts almost 20 minutes. I love Hayes's voice, and I didn't feel that the songs were bad. They were just lengthy. That being said Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic is an absolute banger and doesn't feel at all like its 10 minutes long.
Blondie
3/5
I knew a couple of Blondie songs going into this listen, and I was left a little underwhelmed by the album. One Way or Another and Heart of Glass were, of course, fantastic. I also loved Picture This. However, the other songs were just alright. I felt the sound of some of them began to feel slightly repetitive as the album progressed.
Nirvana
5/5
What a joy this performance was to watch. I listened to the album version provided, as well as the full show as it appeared on MTV. About A Girl is my favorite Nirvana song of all time, so I thought going into it I would absolutely be looking at that as my favorite song of this album/performance. That is until I heard Where Did You Sleep Last Night. I had chills throughout the entirety of it and had to watch it again and again. The crowd seemed equally as enraptured by that performance as I, pausing for a minute before erupting into applause. All the other songs were also phenomenal, and I would listen to any of them on repeat any day of the week. A truly exceptional album and RIP to the legend that is Kurt Cobain.
Neil Young
3/5
The first half of this album had me certain that I was not going to be giving it a very good rating. I found some of the high vocals to be hard to listen to, and I wasn't really vibing with any of the songs. However, my entire view shifted on the second half. From there, I really enjoyed all of the songs. They were beautiful and soothing, with Birds being my favorite track of the album. I will definitely revisit this album at some point, but with how little I enjoyed the first few songs I couldn't rate it above a 3 upon my first couple of listens.
Air
2/5
This album was quite the rollercoaster. Every other song I went from strongly disliking it to finding myself saying “hey this is really nice.” I think that boils down to me not being a fan of electronic music overall. The robotic sounds and sci-fi like noises through a few of the songs didn’t do much for me. That being said, this album does have a couple of hidden gems.
Marianne Faithfull
3/5
This was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I wasn't inclined to add any of the songs from this album to my playlist, but I didn't dislike any of them either. Faithfull has a very interesting quality to her voice with pretty consistent vocal cracks that add to the stories she is telling each song. Why'd Ya Do It was a particularly interesting song, which I can only describe as "perfect feminine rage." The topics of her songs are very gritty, and her storytelling had me listening intently to each song. Some I revisited throughout the day just to really take the story in. I would be interested to see what else Faithfull's discography has to offer, and I found this to be a decent introduction to her artistry.
The Young Rascals
3/5
This album is true to its name. It's "groovin'" music through and through. As a former flautist, I really enjoyed Hubert Laws flute contribution on a couple of the songs. This was a fun album overall. The vocals were good, and each song was bright and cheery even if its subject matter wasn't. It's a "feel good" album true to its time.
Alanis Morissette
5/5
I’m not sure how or why, but the second I saw the name of this album it struck a nostalgia cord for me. I knew, of course, the big hits off the album. Morissette is an incredibly talented singer and songwriter, and her vocals were phenomenal on this album. She’s a powerhouse, but there were also songs where she dialed it back and sounded like I’d never heard her before. She’s wildly talented. I would add any song to my everyday playlist without a second thought.
The Doors
3/5
I wouldn’t exactly call the genre for this album rock. It’s more blues than anything else. However, I like this sound for The Doors. I did find some of the songs to sound a little bit same-y after a bit. Riders on the Storm is, of course, a classic, and there a few other really good hidden gems in this album. It’s solid, but not my favorite of what The Doors have to offer.
Koffi Olomide
2/5
This album, although catchy, got very repetitive very quickly. The songs are about 7 minutes long across the board, and they inevitably all sound the same at around the 2 or 3 minute mark. It’s good music to move to, but not so great to just sit and listen to. Olomide has a nice voice, and I do think this album was kind of fun. It just wasn’t really for me. I would’ve like to know a bit more about the lyrics for context, but translating the songs was quite difficult to do.
Animal Collective
3/5
This album was truly like nothing I have heard before. The vocals were soothing, almost hypnotizing at some points. This worked to its favor most of the time. I really appreciated the artistic choices made in this song. For example, Daily Routine has a keyboard which plays sporadically at the beginning of the song (representing the hectic nature of the daily routine of the "storyteller") and eventually stopping (representing the day drawing to a close). It was really cool, and the lyrics across the board were great. Where it suffered for me a bit is that the vocalist uses the same tone across all songs, which makes the love songs, triumphant songs, angry songs, etc all have a similar feel.
Songhoy Blues
3/5
I wish that I could understand the lyrics because I was very intrigued when I read this band’s story. They’re very talented, and instrumentally this was exactly the kind of album I enjoy. I have not received many non-English albums so far, but this sets a solid bar. I thought it was pretty good.
The Beach Boys
3/5
I felt like every track on this album ranged from being decent to quite good stand alone songs. As a whole, there's a wide variety of sounds and instruments which keeps the album interesting and fun. However, it could be argued that it falls into "jack of all trades, master of none" area. The album is consistent when it comes to quality (which is good, but not the best I've heard from Beach Boys), but it is not as consistent when it comes to creating a cohesive album theme or narrative.
Björk
4/5
Björk has such a unique sound, and I could never truly place her, or her work, into any specific genre. She has her own genre entirely. Her voice and sound is strange (in a fantastic way) and can range from haunting to ethereal from song to song. Family was my personal favorite on the album. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I really did enjoy this album. It grew on me more and more with each song, and it has me excited to hear more from her.
Bobby Womack
3/5
I like the general vibe of this album. The songs are catchy, and, while I am not a huge lover of R&B or jazz, I thought this was quite good. Womack's voice is pleasant and smooth. I didn't really view this album as poetry, as the name of the album had me thinking, but there are some nice love songs. The guitar is the first thing my ear goes to in a song (other than vocals of course), and Womack's playing is fantastic across the board. Good album.
Björk
5/5
Seeing as I got a Bjork album just 2 days prior to this one, I felt like I knew what to expect in this album. I was so wrong. Her sound is, of course, odd (in an absolutely wonderful way). No two songs are alike, but each and every one is beautiful, Listening to her storytelling through her wonderfully weird style is truly a blessing on the ears. I was in awe over her vocals on Human Behavior in particular. She has these lovely voice cracks that appear in quite a few of the songs, and it is one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard. This was a great way to kick off her solo career, and I could listen to any of these songs over and over again.
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Joni Mitchell doesn't have my favorite voice, if I'm being honest. What she does have is an unmatched ability to weave a tale that you feel like you are a part of when listening to her stories (songs). I really appreciate this quality as a writer. The acoustic guitar is really the only instrument I could pick up while listening for a majority of the songs, and it felt like it was more music playing in the background of a scene. It helped enhance the stories Mitchell was telling with her voice. No doubt that there are very "of the time" topics and lingo being used throughout, but what I loved about it is that I felt like a character in each of her songs just living through the events she is retelling. It was truly a joy to listen to, and the only folk album I've really enjoyed thus far.
Grizzly Bear
2/5
I feel bad saying this album bored me, but it just reminded me of a lot of other bands. It’s not fantastic, but it’s not bad either. I thought the vocals were good, and I did feel genuine excitement when the formula was switched up and softer songs played. This just wasn’t my favorite.
Supergrass
4/5
Definitely a lesson to not judge a book by its cover! On first glance, I thought I was getting into a mildly cringey bluegrass album. Not at all the case. This was English rock at its best. The instruments were just fantastic and put me in mind of the other great rock bands from the 90's I grew up loving. The vocals were also quite good. I could never put my finger on what it reminded me of, but the lead singer's voice did feel a bit nostalgic listening to. I really enjoyed myself listening to this one. I would go to a concert and bob my head to any of these songs in person if given a chance. They were all exactly the thing I like: quality rock music with good lyrics and a nice vocal.
U2
2/5
I've listened to U2 a few times before thanks to being an Apple user. They have a good sound, and I found a few songs I enjoyed lyrically. It wasn't a bad album, but it didn't excite me either. It's not one I would revisit at any point. Unfortunately, I think due to overexposure I'm just a bit bored by them now. Apple ruined U2 for me.
Tears For Fears
4/5
This album definitely has some of the best hits Tears For Fears has to offer including Shout, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, and Head Over Heels. All three of those songs I, of course, enjoyed. Outside of those three, I thought that the album was great. There were 1 or 2 that were perhaps a little bit lackluster, but for the most part it was consistent and an enjoyable listen.
Christine and the Queens
3/5
When I saw that this album had 23 songs, I was immediately concerned about it keeping my attention. Fortunately, this was hardly an issue. Firstly, the first half of the album is in English and the second half is the same songs in French. Secondly, Rahim's voice was so clear and gorgeous, and I was thoroughly entertained and impressed by his talent. There is a back and forth between English and French lyrics that I really enjoyed as I am a big fan of French pop artists. The lyrics were great, and I was pretty impressed with Rahim as an artist. Where this lost some points for me was in the music. It was good, but electronic beats aren't really my preference in most cases.
Norah Jones
5/5
I was so excited to revisit this album. My mother played a few songs off of it fairly often when I was a child, and I forgot just how much I loved it. Norah Jones has such a lovely, soft voice. I appreciate her talent and songs even more now as an adult. Her songs are very soothing with beautiful, emotional lyrics. This is an all acoustic album, which made it all the more impressive that it kept my focus from first song to last. There's no theatrics, no exciting instruments. Just a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice singing along to the acoustic guitar and every second of it is perfection. I would listen to this album regardless of my mood and not skip a single song.
Talvin Singh
2/5
Unfortunately, this album was one that I just couldn't get into no matter how much I wanted to. It starts out alright but just gets progressively more tedious with each passing song. Which is funny considering that the first song is the longest. It just wasn't really the style of music I enjoy, and I found it to be boring. It was a bit hard for me to get through it. That being said, I did like some of the instruments used. Especially the flutes!
New Order
3/5
This album (and band) were a great listen. This Time of Night was most certainly my favorite song by a long shot. However, all of the other songs were quite good as well. The instruments hooked me the most with some great beats. The vocals were also quite good but at times could stay monotone for a bit too long, which took some excitement away on a couple of the tracks. Overall, I enjoyed it and hope to see New Order pop up on here again to revisit.
Sepultura
2/5
I was so excited to see that I got my first metal album on this generator. Unfortunately, this excitement did not last. The music itself was good. I'm a sucker for some good riffs and a killer drummer, which this band definitely has. The last few songs also had a cool tribal theme with all kinds of chants and different instruments being used. What was difficult to swallow was the vocals. I had to take multiple breaks from listening due to it becoming too overstimulating at multiple points. The lyrics often became almost unintelligible, which is a shame as part of the reason I love rock/metal music so much is because of the combination of great instruments and great vocals. This was just, what I would consider, an enjoyable listen for me personally.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
3/5
This was a fun album to listen to. As soon as I heard Heads Will Roll (a track I remembered from having watched Glee a while ago) I was pretty excited to hear what else It's Blitz had to offer. I ran into some pretty great tracks with Skeletons being my favorite, as it was something different from the many catchy dance tracks on this album. While those tracks were good, they can get a bit old. Fortunately, I feel that this album was set up well to give the listener "breaks", so to speak, to enjoy some pretty, more soft tracks.
Paul Revere & The Raiders
4/5
The songs on this album were so catchy across the board. They weren’t very long, for the most part, but they had me coming back for multiple listens. I thought the vocals were great, but the music was the real star of the show. I’m surprised I didn’t hear about this band prior to this. Perhaps I’m unfamiliar with the “sound” of 60’s music, but this seemed more modern than that. Like something from the 80’s.
Billy Bragg
2/5
The songs on this album were, lyrically, very strong. I enjoyed the lyricism and the music was great. It was, however, very lengthy. It felt like some of the songs could have been cut from the album and it would have made it easier to digest. The singer(s) have very prominent English accents, which is not a bad thing, but it isn't necessarily my preference. Had the album been shorter, I don't think that would've been a big deal. It just started becoming repetitive after so long.
DJ Shadow
2/5
I don't know if I just didn't understand the concept for this album, but it honestly just sounded like noise to me. There are a few too many annoying, prominent sounds playing repetitively in this album amongst music that actually doesn't sound too bad. In fact, the music was really pleasant and interesting at times. That makes these sounds so jarring, and it really ruins the vibe that I just find myself getting into. There's a lot of spoken word used throughout this album, which isn't a bad thing but it is definitely not something I prefer. The good news about this album, is it did get better as it went along and wasn't bad background music for my tasks. Would I listen to it just because? No.
LCD Soundsystem
2/5
At first, I was dreading getting myself through this album. It was similar in a lot of ways to the album I had got the previous day, and I wasn't exactly looking forward to another day of the same thing. However, I will say it did grow on me as the album progressed. It was by no means my favorite, but the songs could, at least, be catchy at times. The vocals were nothing remarkable nor was the lyricism, but the music wasn't half bad.
Destiny's Child
4/5
This album had all the hits I know by Destiny's Child (as a non-Destiny's Child/Beyonce listener), but where it really shined was with the songs I have never heard before. I always knew these three women were talented, particularly Beyonce with her world-wide stardom, but I was unfamiliar with just how talented vocally they really are. This album had a wonderful mix of catchy tracks, romantic tracks, and even a sad track or two. It was hard to pick a single favorite. I really enjoyed Bootylicious, Fancy, My Heart Still Beats, and Brown Eyes. Realistically though, I would listen to any song off of this album. They were all fantastic and gave me a new appreciation of the already legendary Destiny's Child.
Gene Clark
3/5
This album was mostly acoustic which I thought was a great decision. When I looked up the artist, I saw that we was listed as a folk rock artist. I didn't really catch far too much of the folk in there (which is actually a good thing). The songs were soothing, and it was a nice listen all around. The only detractor for me was the harmonica in a couple songs as it just sounded so shrill, but I attribute that to me not being a harmonica fan. Overall, this was a nice album and an easy, enjoyable listen.
Beastie Boys
3/5
This album had all of the Beastie Boys songs I know from Girls to No Sleep to Brooklyn. The music is always excellent and the songs are very catchy. I have a lot of nostalgia for the majority of this album. However, I can't lie and say that the Beastie Boys are all that good of singers. They do, at the end of the day, just shout. That doesn't automatically make the album bad, but I can't justify putting it on the same level as albums that had the full package with great lyrics, great music, and great vocals. It's still the best album, in my opinion, the Beastie Boys has to offer and is a really fun listen.
Tom Waits
3/5
I absolute love Tom Waits's voice. It's gravelly quality makes it very unique, and I could listen to him all day. That being said, these songs weren't my favorite. I still think it's good, for the most part, but there are a handful that just weren't all that great lyrically or music wise. That being said, this is still a solid Tom Waits album and deserving of being on this list as one of his best.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
2/5
This album got old fast, and I mean really fast. The songs are fine, yes, and I initially enjoyed the upbeat tracks. However, it never strayed away from that formula with the exception of Little Triggers. Everything else was upbeat fanfare with, what are frankly, not great vocals. They're very punk adjacent, which is not the part I disliked. It was the constant gasping noises that deterred me. Singing doesn't always have to sound effortless, but this was 14 songs of it.
MGMT
3/5
This album was very solid. The first track, Time to Pretend, was probably my favorite, but it was truly hard to choose the best song from this album. It brought back a nostalgic feeling in me (which is odd because, to my knowledge, I didn't know of this band and/or album prior to this listen). The music was great, the vocals were soothing, but it was the lyrics which really made an impression on me. This album was creative and a breath of fresh air.
Ray Charles
2/5
I can see why this album would be on here. It's got great music and Ray Charles is a good singer and lyricist. What I couldn't get behind was that for the first half of the album every song started the same (loud, impactful fanfare) and the second half of the album every song started the same (softer, songs are clearly more solemn). It made the album seem less "Genius" and more repetitive. Same songs, different lyrics.
Björk
5/5
What can I say about Bjork that I haven't already said? I've had 3 of her 4 albums that appear on this generator before even hitting 50 albums generated, and I'm sad that the next one I get will be my last. Bjork has a gorgeous voice and a unique sound that you can't place into a genre. This is yet another fantastic album by her. Some of my favorites were It's Not Up To You, Aurora, and Unison.
Radiohead
3/5
I can't say I feel strongly one way or another about Radiohead. The only song I'm familiar with of theirs is Creep, so I would safely call this my first impression of the band. Based on this album, I lean toward the idea that they're a little overrated. The musicianship was undoubtedly great but not as great as I would have expected. The songs got better as time went on, and I did find some of them to be pretty good. I just have a hard time believing this is one of Radiohead's best.
Keith Jarrett
4/5
I acknowledge just how good the piano playing is here. It was nice, relaxing, beautiful, and great music for ambience. It was by no means a boring listen, and it brought me back to years spent listening to my great uncle play the piano. Is it an album I would ever just sit and listen to? Probably not. Am I happy I was introduced to it? Oh absolutely.
The Who
3/5
To be honest, I have always found The Who to be quite average. This didn’t exactly change my mind on that front, but I do appreciate them a bit more. Pinball Wizard was no doubt the best song on the album. I appreciated the theming of the album, all centered around the character of Tommy. Rock opera just really isn’t my thing.
3/5
I can’t exactly say I like country music. However, this was a cute and short album to listen to. It was the perfect length, and I think Loretta Lynn has a very pretty voice. Every song was a love song about either being in love or falling out of it, and I thought that keeping that consistency throughout the album worked in its favor. For a country album, this was fairly good. I definitely didn’t hate it.
Black Sabbath
5/5
I grew up loving Ozzy Osbourne but never really listened to Black Sabbath before hearing this album. For this being their first album they ever made, it was completely and utterly fantastic. The musicianship was top notch, and of course Osbourne’s voice is just incredible. I could go back and listen to it again and again, and there isn’t a single song I would skip. I feel like I’ve been missing out all my life on this band!
The Cure
2/5
I had a very difficult time getting into this album. I thought it was cool conceptually, and I did find myself really enjoying the musicianship here. That's about as far as I go, however. The vocals weren't to my liking, and I found everything to be a little one-note. It was a chore for me to push through the album as, to put it simply, it just bored me.
Gillian Welch
3/5
I found this album to be quite pretty. I'm usually not a fan of country, but this was a bit more on the folk side of the genre. The lyrics were beautiful, as was Gillian Welch's voice. I really enjoyed the simplicity of the acoustic guitar and vocals working in tandem. This was a very pleasant album, and dare I say it was the best country album I have heard on this generator so far.
Marty Robbins
2/5
I feel like this whole album screams Fallout vibes (obviously, Big Iron is one of the most well-known songs from the franchise). That being said, this also means that the album is very one-note. There are multiple times where nearly the exact same tune appears in different songs, which I didn't really care for. This album was fun but nothing to write home about.
Radiohead
3/5
I got a Radiohead album just a few days prior to this. While I still wasn't a tremendous fan of this one (as I also wasn't with the first one I listened to), I did feel like this album gave me more insight at the type of band Radiohead is. I felt like this was a pretty good package for them, and the musicianship was, of course, great. This would've been a little bit better for me had the two Pulk songs not been in there. Otherwise, this got me just a tad more interested in Radiohead. It wasn't bad.
OutKast
3/5
I think there's a lot to love about this album (or rather, albums). It's a lot to swallow for sure with 40 songs and 2 full albums with different vibes. Speakerboxxx was definitely my preferred portion. The Love Below was also great, but not quite as consistent. I can appreciate a good rap album. The songs were catchy and the flow was great. I just think the length of it makes it difficult to get through, and, while there are definitely some great songs on this album, there are definitely a good amount of mediocre ones.
Raekwon
2/5
I enjoy the Wu-Tang Clan's music every now and again. This solo album? Not as much. I can't really say I truly enjoyed any of the tracks. There were good ones, yes, but nothing incredible. After reading what the concept of the album was supposed to be, I don't think I ever would've guessed what it was by listening alone. I think it's safe to say that this album just wasn't for me.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
5/5
I would be hard pressed to rate this album any less than a 5 star. The musicianship is just phenomenal in this album, vocals are great (some of RHCP's best), and the songs are just so catchy and easy to vibe to. I could turn this album on whenever, in whatever setting with whatever mood I'm in, and I would rock out to every single track. I knew a few of the big hits going in (i.e Scar Tissue & Otherside), but it was really the songs I didn't know like Parallel Universes and This Velvet Glove that really made me fall in love with this album. Easy 5/5
The Who
4/5
As opposed to the other Who album I got a few days ago, I felt that this really captured the essence of the band well. This is The Who at its best with great tracks all around. I would say that some of the tracks in the middle were not as great as the big hits off this album, but they still held up as good songs.
Louis Prima
2/5
I don't hate jazz, but this album was just so boring. It grew old very quickly. Fortunately, it is quite short so I didn't have to be bored for too long. The first song or two was fun, but then the scatting just grew to be repetitive.
The Beach Boys
3/5
This album found me on the day that Brian Wilson passed away. I hadn't listened to The Beach Boys prior to this album, but hearing them made me understand the impact of Wilson's passing. This album was quite good with Student Demonstration Time being my favorite track by far. I found this album to be pretty enjoyable. RIP Brian Wilson
Common
3/5
When I saw that this album was produced by Kanye West, I knew it would probably be a pretty decent album. I'm not a tremendous fan of either him or his music, but I was excited to see what Common Sense could do with a Kanye-type beat. I would say this album held up as a pretty good hip hop/rap album. My favorite was the live performance from Dave Chappelle's show of the song Common (otherwise known as the Kanye feature song). That performance was a great listen, but an even more fun watch. Overall, I liked it. It's not the best rap album I've had on this generator, but it is not even close to being the worst.
John Coltrane
2/5
This is a spiritual jazz album heavily featuring the tenor saxophone. The album is separated into four parts leading you through the journey of coming to know the Lord and embracing his supreme love. I can appreciate that. However, I myself am not a jazz fan nor am I particularly religious. I can't deny the talent Coltrane has though, and I think that if you are a jazz lover you will really enjoy this album. It just wasn't for me.
Prince
5/5
I mean, come on, it's Prince! You've got awesome vocals, some fantastic guitar, and lyrics that, while controversial at the time, are still great to this day. I've heard Purple Rain and When Doves Cry before, and it was such a joy to relive them after not hearing them in so long. I felt like I'd been missing out on the others as well! Prince has legend status for a reason, and this album proves exactly why.
Echo And The Bunnymen
2/5
I don't have much to say about this album. It was fine, not super memorable. The only thing that stuck out to me was the vocals being pretty pitchy and/or cracking at times, and they were just not all that great to me.
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
I have no idea why, but I grew up associating Bruce Springsteen with country even though he is by no means a country artist. That being said, this album was the exact opposite of what I expected. In a good way. Vocals were great, musicianship was great, and I was pleasantly surprised. I'd definitely listen again.
Count Basie & His Orchestra
2/5
I'm going to say this is fine. Jazz isn't typically my thing, so I wasn't surprised that this album didn't exactly make me excited. There's good musicianship here. However, there is a lot of that short, abrupt staccato that I just didn't personally enjoy all that much. I would say it was overused. Brass instruments are powerful, and are very harsh to listen to when they sound shrill. Overall, appreciate it as a band kid. Disliked it as a person who doesn't exactly love jazz.
Jorge Ben Jor
2/5
This album was quite fun. I don't understand the language, but I did find the music easy to move to and vibe along with. It was an enjoyable listen at first. However, it did lose some momentum to me as it went on. I tend to enjoy albums with variety, and this is a funky, dance album through and through.
The Beta Band
3/5
I thought this was a pretty good album. It was soothing and a nice, easy listen. I don't know that it really stuck out to me in any way, but I didn't NOT enjoy it either. It makes for nice background noise!
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
It's Bob Marley, so you already know it's going to be great. I think this album is a bit of a hidden gem. Of all the Greatest Hits albums by Marley I grew up listening to, I don't believe I have heard any of the ones on here. They were all fantastic. His music always bring about such a sense of peace, and this is a perfect example of the classic Bob Marley charm and his message to the world of peace and love coming above all else.
Justice
3/5
Listen, I can't lie and say this album is my favorite. I really don't care much for electronica and found quite a few of these songs a bit jarring at moments. However, D.A.N.C.E and Genesis are absolutely phenomenal, and both of them can, and did absolutely, go on my playlist. The rest is not as good, but huge props to those songs for carrying this album up a star in my overall rating.
The Isley Brothers
3/5
This album was funky and full of soul. Vocals were great throughout, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not a bad track in here. Just not ones that really hit me. It makes me feel almost bad that this album just wasn't a standout to me. Major props to these Cincy boys though, from one Cincinnatian to another.
Beastie Boys
3/5
I've said it once, and I'll say it again. I like the Beastie Boys vibe. I think the music is great. This didn't possess the same amount of "Greatest Hits" that Licensed to Ill had, but I liked the music better overall. I really enjoyed a handful of these songs a lot. My issue with putting the Beastie Boys above a three star is that, at the end of the day, they are not tremendously talented. They do just shout their lyrics, as much as I hate to say it, which almost takes away from the music at times. This album didn't have nearly as much of that as the first one I rolled, but it still occurs at times. I still think this is quite good, but I can't justify putting it any higher than a three.
Little Richard
4/5
This album was fantastic. Not too long, high energy, and vocally phenomenal. Little Richard is full to the brim with talent and soul. This is the type of album you would likely expect to see on a generator like this, and it well deserves its spot. It was such a breath of fresh air.
Pet Shop Boys
2/5
I'm not going to say the vocals or music were bad. Quite the opposite. This album was relaxing, but underwhelming for lack of a better term. It was a bit "meh" and didn't really excite me. By the time I got to the end of the album, I didn't remember any of the tracks all that well as none of them stuck out.
Deep Purple
4/5
I have heard before that Deep Purple is a "one-hit wonder" band for Smoke on the Water (which, of course, I love). However, after listening to this album, I don't really understand why. The guitar and vocals are on point, and this is exactly the kind of sound I'm into. As far as rock goes, this is a great example of good, hard rock. I thought all the songs were great, even though Smoke on the Water was definitely the standout (Highway Star was also up there).
A Tribe Called Quest
3/5
Based on the name, I assumed this album would be something far different than what it is. What a pleasant surprise it turned out to be. The lyrics were well-written, and the flow was great. It was far superior to a majority of modern hip hop and/or rap music. I don't listen to a great deal of 90's hip hop, but this album definitely got me interested in hearing more.
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
I was beyond excited to have the chance to listen to this Simon & Garfunkel album in full, as I adore Scarborough Fair & Homeward Bound. The band's sound is unique, being primarily folk with a bit of rock influence. It's the kind of music that ages exceptionally well. Through the generations of my family, from my grandfather to my dad to myself, we can all enjoy a good Simon & Garfunkel album. This album was relatively short, but it's varied with a good mix of soothing, uplifting, and solemn tracks. I hope to have the chance to listen to another in this generator.
The Yardbirds
3/5
This was a pretty good blues album. I think it starts and ends very strong, but there is a small part in the middle of the album where it loses momentum for a bit. The guitar playing was most definitely the standout. The album itself doesn't quite match up to other albums by similar bands in this generator, but I thing it was still quite good.
3/5
I didn't really know how I was going to feel about this album given its name and cover art. From song one, I didn't think I'd like it much. The Nine Inch Nails reference was neat but not exactly done in a way that is creative or unique. The lyrics were often lacking; mostly just a lot of cursing and talking about being misunderstood. However, this album did grow on me. The reason? The musicianship. I acknowledge that this is just some guys rocking out and having fun. I appreciate that, and, instrumentally, they DO know how to rock. I can not express enough how great the guitar and bass is. However, the lyrics are undoubtedly a retractor. I want to put this at a four musically, but the lyrics sit at a 2. I'll be fair and split the difference, placing this album at a 3.
Suede
3/5
When I first started listening to this album, I could point out almost immediately just how much this reminded me of David Bowie. Suede's music is reminiscent of Bowie's to some degree, but I suppose that is unsurprising given that Suede was inspired by him. This album in particular was heavily influenced by his Ziggy Stardust era, and it shows. It definitely leans more into melodrama and didn't really strike me the way the other Britpop albums I have received from that era have. However, I thought that it was quite good. I can not stress enough how much I enjoyed the song Animal Nitrate in particular.
Public Enemy
4/5
This album hits extra hard given the state of the world at the time of listening to it. I can only imagine how hard it hit back when it released in the early 90's. The songs are angry, yes, but that's an oversimplification. Each track is a challenge, confronting issues such as white supremacy & racism head on with no mincing of words. It's got the full package: great beats, great rappers, and meaningful lyrics. I have actually never heard of most of this group, with the exception of Flavor Flav (who I only know of, I had not heard him rap prior to this), and that's truly shocking to me. I hope to see something of theirs on this generator again.
Garbage
5/5
This album had me completely hooked the moment Shirley Manson opened her mouth on the first track. It was sexy, blended genres seamlessly, and had so much diversity that, frankly, it didn't even need to be good. The talent speaks for itself on this one. I would add every song to my playlist (and did actually do so) in a heartbeat, and I want nothing more than to continue listening to this band. This was so phenomenal, and I truly can't believe I've never heard of this band before now. I know this band is not "traditionally rock", but this album made me feel the same way I feel when I listen to my favorite female rock vocalists in modern day music. It's timeless, truly.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
3/5
I didn't enjoy this album nearly as much as the other Yeah Yeah Yeahs album I got. The music is good here (although not exactly memorable), but a few of the vocals irritated me a fair bit. I don't know if it was due to my mood the day I listened to it, but I found the vocalist's screams and squeals excessive and annoying. When she did actually sing though it was quite good! This showcased a lot more in the second half of the album, which was a stark contrast from the mania that was the first half. The first half was a 2, and the second half was a solid 3.5, so I'll round it to a 3 rating.
Massive Attack
2/5
To preface, I do not believe this album was bad. It just did nothing for me. None of the songs stuck out as being exceedingly good or bad. There wasn't anything about this album I found inherently offensive, it just bored me. Vocals were fine and the music was as well. I just think "trip hop" is not for me. Electronica isn't my favorite, and I wasn't really getting much of the hip hop aspects from this album.
Ride
3/5
This was nice album. Easy listen and not too long. I gave it a couple listens, as my first one I didn't feel that I had really digested the music properly. I think that the second listen through was a good idea. I went from thinking this was a bit of a boring album to thinking that it was nice, reverberated rock. Not a type of music I lean toward, but it was pleasant here. I think I may revisit it at another point and see how I feel about it. Good album.
Supertramp
3/5
This was a fine album. I'm growing a bit weary of the British albums here lately. Not to say that it is bad, but the lines begin to blur when you have heard so many British rock albums in succession. Taking that into consideration, I came into the album with a bit of bias. That bias makes me want to put this album at a 2. However, I don't think that would be appropriate as this album wasn't truly bad. I don't necessarily know if I agree with its inclusion on this list, but it was still a decent rock album. A bit middle of the road.
Big Brother & The Holding Company
4/5
Absolutely fantastic album. The moment I heard the singer's voice I felt like it was familiar to me. Come to find out, Janis Joplin was a part of a band and was not solely a solo act. Piece of My Heart I have heard before (and love), so I was excited to see what the rest of the album had in store. It didn't disappoint. Joplin's voice is phenomenal and so unique. Her raspiness may not be for everyone, but to me it is absolutely addictive. This is the album that brought her to stardom and what a great album it is.
Wire
2/5
I don't want to go in too hard on this album, but at the end of the day it was pretty difficult to get through. That's saying something considering how short the songs, and overall album, are. I'll give a point for the instruments. However, the singer is unintelligible and by the time I got through the album (finally) I couldn't remember a single song. Just not an album I think I NEED to hear before I die by any stretch.
Black Sabbath
5/5
To receive this album following the death of Ozzy Osbourne was such a treat and great way to sit with, and truly think about, the legacy he left behind. Every song on this album is simply fantastic. Great musicianship with some of the best solos I've heard in rock & metal music. The lyrics and vocals are impactful. All around fantastic album. RIP Ozzy Osbourne, THE Prince of Darkness
Iron Butterfly
3/5
This was a solid album. Great musicianship in this one. It was fairly short and mostly taken up by In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, which was just a little shorter than the other five songs on the album combined. However, it is most definitely the best song in the lineup. All of the souls in it were phenomenal. I would almost say you could get away with just listening to that one song, but the others are pretty good too. Just not nearly as interesting as the title track.
Queen
4/5
I mean how can you NOT give this album a high rating? It's Queen. They're known around the world for a reason. Freddie Mercury's vocals are unmatched, and Brian May, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor are some of the most talented musicians of their time. I will say this album did not contain many of their hits, mostly hidden gems. If you listen to Queen casually, you'll likely only know Killer Queen. I do feel like it's not their best album, but it's still head and shoulders above many other albums on this generator. A "pretty good" Queen album is still a phenomenal album, and I'm looking forward to more Queen albums down the road!
Carole King
5/5
I absolutely adored this album. It was absolutely gorgeous lyrically, musically, and vocally. It's truly timeless, and there isn't a bad song on the album. This is THE Carole King album you should listen to if you want to get to know her as an artist. It's a masterpiece that touches on so many different emotions and experiences with such eloquence and raw emotion. One of the best listens I have had so far on this generator.
Paul Weller
2/5
I really like Paul Weller's vocals, and I think he is a great artist. I just think this album is a bit boring. It started off fairly strong, but I had trouble really focusing on the music the further in I got. I want to give it a higher rating, but I just can't, in good conscience, say that this is equal to other albums I gave a higher rating.
Dexys Midnight Runners
1/5
I don't really understand this album's placement on this generator. The musicianship wasn't enough to save it. The vocals weren't great, the lyrics weren't good, and there is as much talking in this album as there is music. It isn't good. I couldn't find a single thing to like about it.
Germs
1/5
This wasn't great, simply put. Punk albums are hit or miss on this generator, and this was a major miss. Lots of very unpleasant growling noises and the music wasn't exactly good either. The vocals were so god awful that I, at multiple times throughout my listen, wanted to just stop listening to music entirely for the day. Just plain irritating and uninteresting.
Portishead
3/5
I found this album to quite good, especially after back-to-back 1 star albums. Beth Gibbons has a gorgeous voice, and this album was overall incredibly unique. I'm not a tremendous fan of the music style, but if I was going to listen to a "trip hop" album this is the one I would reach for. It was quite pretty and an easy listen.
Bob Dylan
3/5
Bob Dylan is one of those artists that I know is influential (and I understand why), but just can't really get into. To clarify, I don't think he is bad nor do I think this album is bad. It's a perfectly fine folk album, and a better folk album than most. It just isn't my usual cup of tea. That being said, I got some moderate enjoyment out of it. I thought that the musicianship was quite good, and I don't dislike Dylan's vocals or the lyrics. Not phenomenal, not bad.
Fleet Foxes
3/5
I've never been much of a fan of folk music, but this was definitely a great album for what it was. The production value on it is great, and every sound is crisp and has a very clean feel to it. The vocals were great, and I loved the storytelling in the lyrics. I have to give it props for being, by far, the best folk album I have got on this generator thus far. There was a unique quality to it that made it a very interesting listen, although I can't exactly place my finger on what it is. It has all the aspects of a folk album, but something about it sets it apart from other albums of the same genre. That being said, as I mentioned before, it isn't a genre I am particularly fond of.
The Pharcyde
3/5
I've enjoyed most of the hip hop albums that I have got so far on this generator. This wasn't exactly my favorite, but it did grow on me with time. Sometimes it's wackiness comes across as uncomfortable, and other times its incredibly charming and fun. I would say I enjoyed about half of the album, so I think a down the middle rating is fair.
Fiona Apple
5/5
Fiona Apple has one of the most gorgeous voices out there, and it blows my mind that she was so young when she recorded it. There is a level of elegance to her delivery paired with a broodiness that women young and old can connect with. The lyrics are eloquently written and complex, and every song is absolutely phenomenal. Truly a masterpiece.
Eminem
4/5
I don't think Eminem's talent can be denied. He is a genius lyricist, and I have a lot of respect for him as one of the best rappers out there. This album is definitely filled to the brim with rage, and there is a fair bit of homophobia and misogyny in his lyrics. That can't exactly be denied. However, this isn't exactly uncommon in rap music even today. This was recorded when he was still in active addiction and needed an outlet for his rage at the world and the people who had hurt him in his past. Kim is definitely the hardest track to listen to, but it is definitely one many of us can understand if you have ever been in a tumultuous relationship. It's a real look into what happens behind closed doors and, while difficult to face, is so raw. I don't want to glorify the bad parts about this album, but I think that there is a benefit to albums like this existing. It's real emotion. Real rage. Real struggle. Real art.
Janelle Monáe
3/5
I really enjoy Janelle Monae as an artist. She is incredibly unique, and I'm so happy to see her included on this list. She's very talented. This album has a bit of everything, touching on multiple genres and some songs which are a unique genre all on their own. Yet, somehow, it's a cohesive product. It's not really the type of music I go for, but I thought it was a fun modern album to listen through.
Iron Maiden
5/5
What can I say? I love this stuff. The music rocks, and I never get tired of it. Vocals are great. This is Bruce Dickinson's first album with the band, and he does a fantastic job. However, it's the music that truly makes Iron Maiden shine. I look forward to the guitar solos and awesome, unique riffs each song. Listening to albums like these brings me back to the days where I would play Guitar Hero with my brother and just rock out for hours. It was such a fun listen and a big breath of fresh air after having so many back-to-back folk and hip hop albums.
Tom Waits
3/5
I liked this album. It was, perhaps, a bit longer than it should have been. However, there are some good songs here. A big point out the gate for Underground (loved it in Robots, and I had it on repeat all day after listening to this album). I've once heard Tom Wait's voice be compared to a "human cigarette", and I think that's a fairly accurate description. The band is also great in this album. Some songs are better than others, but I would say it was overall in the "okay" area for album ratings.
Napalm Death
1/5
I don't remember any of the songs. I never at any point knew what a single track was about. The band was actually pretty good, but it's hard to realize that when your ears are being assaulted by some guy basically barking into the mic over and over again for 2 minutes straight. Vocals were terrible. Every song is the same. What else? I guess one nice thing to say about it is thank goodness it was short.
Leonard Cohen
2/5
Lyrically, I really enjoyed this. It was eloquent, evoked proper emotions, and was more thoughtful than most of the song writing you find here. You're living the story Cohen is painting as you listen. The acoustic guitar is also soothing. The primary issue is that Cohen's voice is pretty monotone, and the album begins to get boring quickly in every other aspect. It feels so incredibly long despite being only 10 songs.
Thin Lizzy
3/5
This was a pretty good 70's rock album. I did think it was perhaps a bit long, but I appreciated listening to another live album again (I've only generated one other one). I wouldn't describe this as anything brilliant, but the music was of good quality. Great musicianship in this one. Had it not drug on like it did it would have potentially received a high rating, but it did start to become sort of a mundane listen by the second half.
The Smiths
3/5
This was a pretty nice album. Lyrically strong, and vocals and music were good. The titular "Meat is Murder" track was a hard listen, but that is kind of the point. It's political, it's deep, and it has a darkness to it that carries across the whole of the album. Interesting listen. I can't say I disliked it, but it wasn't my favorite either.
Gang Of Four
3/5
There's a lot of awesome, interesting guitar riffs in this one. Really solid. It's not exactly my favorite genre (punk is pretty hit or miss with me), but I thought that was pretty good for a punk album. I'd listen to a few of the tracks again. Vocals weren't the best I've ever heard either, but that's the genre and it fits with it.
Madness
2/5
Not great, not bad. Frankly a little boring. I just don't think I'm all that into ska music. I don't want to take away from the talent of the band by saying it's bad. It is NOT bad. It just isn't for me.
Dusty Springfield
4/5
Dusty's voice is warm, beautiful, and soothing. I really liked hearing more of what she has to offer (I've heard Son of A Preacher Man, but the rest of the album doesn't exactly match the vibe of that song). The album is soulful, romantic, tender, and a very soothing, easy listen. I really enjoyed it.
De La Soul
2/5
I know of De La Soul from the collaborations done with the band Gorillaz. This is my first introduction to the group's own music. I have always pretty consistently given albums from this era of rap fairly low ratings, and this is not an exception. It's a fun album, but it gets to the point where the tracks don't sound unique after a while. Also, in my opinion, a bit too long. I still appreciate the lyricism, but I can not get past my hatred of the skits. There's one in particular (you'll know when you listen) that is completely unnecessary and brought me to the brink of ranking this a 1.
Radiohead
4/5
I think this album was definitely a cut above the other two Radiohead albums I have listened to on this generator thus far. Vocals were strong, and the guitar was awesome. This was solid, and now I definitely understand why Radiohead has such a fanbase. This is great alternative rock music. I would gladly give it another listen.
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
I truly expected this to be a country album just hearing the name and looking at the cover. So when I found out this was a rock album, I was very pleasantly surprised. I thought this was quite good. It started to lose traction about halfway through, but it was still a fun listen.
David Holmes
2/5
This was a cool album, conceptually. It just doesn't do anything for me personally. That electronic DJ music is not my style.
Dusty Springfield
4/5
I feel like this album was very consistent with great tracks all around. Dusty's vibe is the same in this album as the other one I have listened to on this generator, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. A lot of the big hits I know her for are on this album. Once again, her vocals are beautiful and her songs full of the themes of love, revenge, and self-confidence her previous album had. My only complaint is it was a tad long, but I can look past that.
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
3/5
This was a fun, charming album. Really enjoyable and the perfect length. It's old-timey love songs all around and just feels like music you would see couples dancing in their living room to in the old movies. Really enjoyed this one, but I wouldn't call it an album I NEED to listen to.
The Pretty Things
2/5
This band has a very similar vibe to The Beatles, but they don't possess the charm that The Beatles does. The album tries to be a jack of all trades but is a master of none. The instruments are fantastic. Not a tremendous fan of the vocals and none of the songs really stood out. It was a bit of a slog to get through.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
As many times as I have heard of The Rolling Stones, I have never actually had the pleasure of hearing their music. For my first introduction to them, this was quite good. It's unlike the other British rock I have been exposed to on this generator, likely because it leans a bit more blues. While it was good, it didn't keep my attention held throughout the listen and didn't exactly stick with me.
2/5
Maybe I just didn't understand the album concept, but I didn't exactly find charm in the strange lyrics. I'm not going to say the album was bad because it wasn't. It was just as decent as many other British rock albums on here, but it dragged on for longer than I would've liked. It was a bit bland.
Willie Nelson
2/5
Full disclosure, I do not like country music and will likely not rate any country albums very highly. This being said, I have a great deal of respect for Willie Nelson. The man makes good music, and he is a country music legend for a reason. However, that type of music is not my personal preference and is a bit grating to listen to. You will enjoy this no doubt if you are into older country tunes, but since I am not this is where we're at.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
5/5
This album is just perfection to me. Not a single bad track. Fantastic vocals, great musicianship, endlessly catchy, versatile, I could go on. I went back and listened to a majority of it multiple times throughout the day. It's just the perfect package. If you asked me to pick a favorite song from the album, I don't know if I could manage to. Born on the Bayou, Good Golly Miss Molly, and Proud Mary are probably my top contenders.
Roxy Music
2/5
What did I expect with this album? Well, not what it actually turned out to be. It's not country, that's for sure. I wasn't really impressed by this album. It was okay. Quirky. Creative. I really don't care for the vocalist, and the only standout to me was the bassist.
Amy Winehouse
5/5
Jazz is hit or miss for me, but when it's Amy Winehouse it's pretty much an instant hit. I've only heard music from the Back to Black album prior to this, so I was pretty interested to see what kind of artist Amy was when she first hit the scene. I was not disappointed. The fact that she was a teenager when she conceptualized, wrote, and sang this album is insane to think about. What Is It About Men is almost haunting when you think about the course of her life, leading all the way to the end. Amy Winehouse is an incredible talent. Phenomenal vocalist & just so raw. There's not another kind of album out there like this one, and I thoroughly enjoyed every single song.
The Clash
2/5
I really wasn't tremendously impressed with The Clash when I got their London Calling album, and this album was significantly worse. British rock bands very seldom ever hit with me so I think it's just a matter of personal taste. Their musicianship is perfectly fine, but that is the only aspect of this album I found good and the only think that nets it an extra star. It would be a 1 otherwise.
Television
3/5
This album was fine. Not what I would consider a great post punk album, but some of the hooks on it are pretty catchy for sure! I didn't dislike it, but it didn't have a strong effect on me either. The title track, for me, was definitely the standout by a pretty large margin. Everything else was perfectly fine; not great but not bad either.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
4/5
Red Hot Chili Peppers are very consistent with their sound. Their musicianship is always fantastic and has some great riffs that stick with you. This album is no different. Their music, I would say, is a bit quirky, but it's in a way that I personally enjoy. You've got a little bit of everything in this album, and it leans a bit more funky than the other RHCP albums. This being said, this was not my favorite of their albums. Incredibly solid, but funk doesn't speak to me as much as some of their other albums do.
50 Cent
4/5
Listen, are the lyrics shallow sometimes? Yeah, they are, but each song is so incredibly catchy and can get me at LEAST nodding my head along. Plus, you have quite a few very vulnerable and raw tracks if you really listen to the lyrics. In Da Club is, of course, a banger & the most well known song on the track, but I was really excited to see what else 50 Cent had to offer with this album. I was not disappointed. Incredibly catchy, great flow, and just all around a really solid album I'll for sure revisit.
The Lemonheads
3/5
This album was a very pleasant surprise to me. Lots of catchy tunes and great musicianship. There were some good riffs in here. The vocals were pretty good considering the sometimes goofy nature of the lyrics. Really good, but I would not say particularly unique in any way.
Public Image Ltd.
2/5
Was the political aspect of this cool? A little bit. Is the album good? Well, no. There's not much in the way of vocals. More yelling out slam poetry for a quarter of the album and kind of singing (still mostly yelling) for the rest. If that's your thing, I suppose you will like this. I will say that the actual music (instruments backing the yelling) sound pretty good, but overall the album was repetitive and just not generally enjoyable.
Billy Joel
4/5
As many times as I have heard OF Billy Joel, I haven't taken the time to listen to any of his work prior to this. I feel as if I've been missing out on an incredible talent! The writing and lyricism is top notch, and there's some really catchy songs on this album. There were perhaps a couple that were just okay, but for the most part the music was the perfect length and incredibly well performed by Joel. This album just feels timeless.
Bob Dylan
3/5
There's nothing quite like someone sitting down and singing their heart out while playing the acoustic guitar. The album, while somewhat simple, is very pretty and the type of music I imagine being listened to around a campfire (in a good way). Bob Dylan doesn't exactly have my favorite voice, but I think it works with this style of music. It isn't an album that I felt too strongly about either way, but it's a nice, pleasant listen.
Hüsker Dü
2/5
I thought this album was decent. A bit boring and far too lengthy, but I do want to give some props for the musicianship. I, at some points, couldn't tell if the song had changed or not due to the similarities between the tracks. Had it been shorter, I would've perhaps enjoyed it more, but over an hour of the same thing was a bit of a nightmare to get through.
k.d. lang
3/5
Lang has an absolutely gorgeous voice. Beautiful tone and the quality of the songs are fantastic. It makes for great, calming background music. This being said, the songs are not exactly the most memorable. I will not go as far as to say I was completely bored by it because I was just so impressed by k.d. lang's voice, but a great voice does not a great album make. It's certainly pretty but lands in the middle of the road for me overall.
Hugh Masekela
2/5
I can't lie, despite the talent this bored the crap out of me. My band kid heart did enjoy the musicianship, but this album was far too long. By the end I was just really over it. Jazz in small doses is fine by me, but this was really just overdoing it. Not for me.
Gorillaz
4/5
I mean I love me some Gorillaz, but I was a bit confused about the inclusion of this album over Demon Days on this generator. Regardless, I think this is still a great album. Mediocre Gorillaz music is still great music overall, and I'd listen to (and have listened to) this album again and again. Damon and Jamie are such a great creative duo. Gorillaz is unlike any other band that you will find out there, and I truly think that kind of uniqueness is rare in the music industry. 2D's (Damon's) vocals are fantastic, and the music is just so catchy. Clint Eastwood is, of course, a classic. The only reason it misses out on a 5 star rating from me is because I just don't think this is the band's best overall work. I've heard more interesting, strong albums from them, but this is still incredibly solid. I love this album.
Frank Ocean
2/5
I feel bad saying I didn't like this album because I really do think Frank Ocean has a great voice. That isn't enough to save it, however. It was just kind of annoying. A bit of a childish way to explain it, I know, but there's no better way for me to explain the "impact" this album had on me. I wasn't a fan. I will give an extra point for the talent, but that's as much as I can give.
Echo And The Bunnymen
2/5
This was just okay. I'm, at this point, growing a bit weary of the amount of Britpop on this generator. The first Echo And The Bunnymen album I got was pretty mediocre, and I have to say this isn't much different. The vocals really aren't all that great, but some props to the musicians as there are some pretty good songs (musically) in here.
John Prine
2/5
I'm not a tremendous fan of country music. It's just not for me, and I have to be honest I really don't like John Prine's voice. What I will give him is his lyricism. I did feel engrossed, to some extent, in the story that he was telling. I grew up in the south so I could envision some of the stories in his songs as he was weaving them. I just didn't like much else, unfortunately.
Rufus Wainwright
4/5
I knew Rufus Wainwright from, of course, his Hallelujah cover. He definitely has pipes, and I thought that his vocal talents were showcased phenomenally in this album. It's, at times, a bit too dramatic with the vibrato. VERY theatrical. However, it still felt like a breath of fresh air after the last few albums I had. This was something different, fresh, and a great listen.
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
This was an interesting one, and probably the only album I've got on this generator so far where I genuinely didn't know how to rank it. The album was so interesting. From the vocals to the variety in songs to the dynamic musicianship. It's, on one hand, not the type of music I would typically say is my style. On the other, I can't deny that this album was so cool and filled to the brim with artistry from very talented people. The lengthy solos were perhaps a bit too prominent, but they were interesting enough to hold my attention.
King Crimson
3/5
I've never heard the album before now, but I'm certainly privy to the influence of this album. The screaming red man on the cover was immediately recognizable to me. As far as what I personally thought of the music, it was pretty good. I can certainly understand it's popularity. 21st Century Schizoid Man had me absolutely hooked & was by far the best song on the album. My issue came with the lengthy, jazzy sections of the songs. Each song is pretty long, and some unnecessarily so. I'm all for just vibing with the music, but I found myself losing some of my excitement when the music breaks would carry on for too long. Overall, one absolutely fantastic song can't carry the rating, so I'll put it in the dead middle.
Johnny Cash
4/5
I've consistently really enjoyed the live albums on this generator, and this is no exception. Hearing the atmosphere of the concert makes you feel as if you are really there, listening to Johnny Cash sing in that prison. I'm not a tremendous Cash fan, but the songs that he performed here I really enjoyed. The song he sang with his wife was incredibly sweet, and I liked the song he wrote for the show as well.
Bill Evans Trio
3/5
This album is undoubtedly very pretty, and the musicianship is fantastic. I love some good bass, and the piano playing was gorgeous. However, I would only choose to throw this on for background music not to just listen to for the fun of it. 3 stars for the talent though.
Run-D.M.C.
1/5
I think this is just a bit too dated for me. The drum beats are very simple, and many sounded the same. At some points I was thinking I had listened to the song already. Rating this a 1 feels harsh, but I just don't think there was anything I really liked about it.
Neil Young
3/5
Similar to the first Neil Young album I got in this generator, this one was half good. In this case, however, it was the first half of the album that really shined. Starting at For the Turnstiles it starts to get a bit weak and the tracks either have very pitchy vocals or drag too long. A middle of the road album gets a middle of the road ranking for me.
Massive Attack
2/5
Other than having a few good beats, this album does nothing for me. There are maybe 2-3 songs with vocals I could stomach & the rest irritated me to no end. Trip hop just doesn't really do it for me I suppose because this album was hard for me to get through.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Very strong opening and very strong ending, but the middle was, mostly, just okay. I think that all The Rolling Stones albums I've received on this generator so far have been pretty good. They just aren't outstanding or exceptional in my opinion.
Sam Cooke
4/5
I haven't had much exposure to the King of Soul before, but this live album made me feel like I right there at the show dancing along. The vibes are off the charts on this one. I'm typically not big on gospel music, but I don't think there was a song I disliked during this performance. It being live definitely did give me a better opinion of it as it was more of an experience than a listen.
Genesis
3/5
I'm not entirely sure how to rate this album. The music was so cool. Incredible riffs and interesting dynamics, some moments are strong with a heavy rock sound while others are light with a more jazzy tone. I didn't care for the vocals across the board, and I did think that some songs just dragged on a bit too long. This album really isn't that long, coming in under an hour, but the tracks can go up to 11 minutes. This wouldn't matter if the tracks all kept their pace, but some did not. I'll be fair and say there's an equal balance of things I loved and things I just didn't care for that much.
The Cure
2/5
The music is great. Immediately upon starting the first song One Hundred Years I was drawn in and interested in what the album had to offer. Then, the excitement just faded away. I just don't think that, on the day I listened to it, I was super down for all the nihilism and depressing lyrics. Goth rock is a genre I'm not too into either solely based on lack of exposure to it. It was alright, I just think I would've liked it perhaps a bit more on a different day. I may revisit this down the line & update my rating but today it is a 2.
Kraftwerk
2/5
I understand how cool it is that this album sounds the way it does when it came out back in the 70's, but I can't honestly say that made my listen any more enjoyable. Just the title of the song in a robotic voice over a synth beat. Over and over and over again for more than half the album. Sometimes they change it up but not enough to make it matter. I'll be nice and give a point for the pleasantness of the beats, but that is all I can give.
Rush
4/5
This album was a great listen and a breath of fresh air after a string of bad and mediocre albums. Lyrically fantastic with great musicianship across the board. I will say I wasn't the biggest fan of the vocalist, but my issues with his voice really only applied to a couple of songs. Overall I thought this was a great listen and really enjoyed the back and forth between instrumental jam tracks and the songs containing lyrics. It was a nice way to showcase the talents of all the band members.
Linkin Park
5/5
I've been a big fan of Linkin Park for a majority of my life so getting this album was certainly very exciting. I understand that their music is not for everyone, but I don't think there is a band out there that does this fusion of rock and rap better than them. It's incredibly unique, the chemistry between Mike and Chester is great, and I love the diversity in the music. I will say that I am in the minority that prefers Meteora over Hybrid Theory, but that's not to say this album isn't also fantastic. Chester Bennington was such a talented man, and getting a chance to appreciate his voice for a little bit today was incredibly refreshing.
John Grant
4/5
This album is incredibly well written and executed. One of the rare instances in which I felt like I really understood who the artist was, and what chapter of life he was in during the making of the album. It, admittedly, took a few listens to grow on me. Folk is not one of my preferred genres, but this felt different from other folk albums I've listened to. There's a charm to it I really enjoyed. Not all the songs are absolute bangers, and it was a bit lengthy, but I relatively enjoyed the listening experience.
The Allman Brothers Band
4/5
I absolutely love getting live albums on this generator, and this was no exception. I enjoy The Allman Brothers Band quite a bit and have a couple of their songs on my everyday playlist, so to hear them live was a nice treat. This performance is very long, with seven songs that last well over an hour in total, but sitting and vibing to some fantastic instrumental sections was nice in this instance. Listening to this concert felt like I was there watching it, and that's one of the most important things to me when rating these types of albums. It's worth noting that Gregg Allman's vocals are absolutely phenomenal in this performance as well. I was absolutely hooked for a while, but the length did weigh on me after so long to where I had to take a short break.
Funkadelic
4/5
The instrumentals are fantastic, especially the guitar. I also love some funky bass (coming from a big Les Claypool fan). This album really surprised me. I didn't think I'd enjoy it all, but there were only two songs that I didn't exactly vibe with. I enjoyed a majority of them a lot, and I actually think this was the best funk album I've heard since Isaac Hayes. Really strong.
Shuggie Otis
2/5
Admittedly, this just didn't do a whole lot for me. I found it a bit boring and lackluster. The moment I felt that the music was going to swell and something interesting was going to happen, it just didn't. I don't think this was bad by any stretch, but it was a bit boring for me personally.
Happy Mondays
2/5
I couldn't get into this album even a bit from the first song. It's a bit one-note and not interesting. You could've told me I was listening to the same song for an hour, and I would believe it. It drags on for far too long and the vocals/lyrics were just not there for me. 1 star for good musicianship, and that's the only grace I can provide. I didn't enjoy this in the slightest.
Gram Parsons
2/5
I want to be kind to this album because it is quite pretty, but I just can not get into country try as I might. Parsons's vocals aren't anything exceptional, but his duet partner does have quite the pretty voice. I won't completely trash this album with a one star rating, but this was not for me. I will say that if you like country I think that you absolutely will enjoy this. That's just not applicable to me haha.
B.B. King
3/5
This performance was an incredibly fun listen. I'm not the biggest fan of the blues and do not listen to it. However, I thought that this performance was electric and incredibly entertaining. The energy of the crowd paired with B.B. King's own energy was a great combination to listen to and really upped my enjoyment of the album. The genre is still not for me, so I can't go too high with my rating as I likely won't be revisiting this album in the near future, but it was fun.
Prince
4/5
I was pretty excited to listen to another Prince album on this generator after how good Purple Rain was. This album is certainly more risqué and hypersexual than that album, which is both to its benefit and its detriment. It did, at times, become a borderline uncomfortable listen. However, I think that's part of the beauty of this album. It's dark, it's sexual, it's political, it's exciting, and it is fabulous. I didn't really get the enjoyment that I got from Purple Rain, largely due to some personal discomfort with the moaning noises (which is just a personal thing), but I still thought that it was amazing. Very deserving of a spot on this generator.
Crowded House
4/5
I had never heard of this band prior to this album. and what a shame that is! It seems I've been missing out. It is perhaps simplistic, but it is beautiful and so pleasing to the ears. The vocals are gorgeous, and there's not a single "skippable" track that comes to mind. This was all around solid and a breath of fresh air. I was a big fan.
Can
2/5
I really hate to write this album off as just "boring", but that's the only word I could find for it after its conclusion. I did not inherently hate it, but I was not inspired or entertained by it either.
GZA
2/5
I'm not much of Wu-Tang fan, and this is really no better or worse to me than the other solo album from one of their members that I have generated so far. It just wasn't really for me. Although I will note that GZA does have good flow. Just wasn't a big fan of this one.
Paul Simon
4/5
I didn't realize just how nostalgic this album would be for me when I went to listen to it. I didn't recognize the artist's name or the name of the album, but I realized quickly that I had heard them all when I was a kid. All of those songs seemed to have stuck with me, and I really enjoyed listening to them once again. Simon's vocals are very pleasant to me. I think this album is just so fun to listen to and really brought me a lot of joy.
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
I loved the first Simon & Garfunkel album I got so much, and I was very excited to get another. This one was not quite as good, but I still got some enjoyment out of it. I found this one to be more boring as it was pretty much strictly folk with little to no rock influence that was present in their other album. Three of the tracks are really kind of... nothing as much as I hate to say it. These being the theme song of the album, its reprise, and a "song" in which older people simply talk. Not a bad album by any means, but it didn't entertain me nearly to the extent the other Simon & Garfunkel album did. The last quarter of the album is very strong, and definitely my preferred kind of songs from the duo.
Lorde
2/5
I couldn't really tell you why, but I've just never been into Lorde. I like the moodiness of her music. It's pretty and well produced. I'm not really all that fond of her voice admittedly. I hesitate to call this bad. It's clean, it's pretty, it's well done, but ultimately just not really for me. Guess Royals got played one too many times for me as a teen.
The Fall
2/5
No. Not for me. I have grown very weary of these English punk bands. Didn't like the songs. One extra star for the musicianship, and that's the only kindness I will extend. I am very over this style of music on this generator.
The Style Council
4/5
I would say that tone-wise this album was a bit all over the place, but what it is consistent in is quality. I found this album to be really fun. At one moment I was being soothed with beautiful melodies, the next nodding my head to the guitar, and the next dancing along. As far as being cohesive goes, this album is not that. What it is is a great listening experience, and I appreciate that.
The Strokes
3/5
This was pretty solid. I liked when the vocalist leaned more into the grit with his vocals, which doesn't happen in many of the songs on the album but it was great when it did. This was a nice introduction to the band. It was a good, clean album.
Guns N' Roses
5/5
I mean what more could you want from a rock album? Great riffs, strong vocals, and memorable tracks that will never die. This album has aged like wine. I haven't listened to the album in its entirety before, but I have heard quite a few of the tracks before. They get better and better with every listen. A truly fantastic album that I feel like any generation of rock fans could enjoy.
Rush
3/5
When I saw that one song alone was 20 minutes long, I wasn't so sure I would be into it. Typically songs of that length get to be boring at some point. However, that wasn't the case with this one. It built up as the song went on and became much better with each passing minute. The B side was also quite good. I think this was a nice album, and it subverted my expectations.
Al Green
3/5
I'm not a big fan of soul music, but I thought this was pretty good for what it was. The songs were hopeful and upbeat. For a style of music I'm not tremendously fond of, I thought that this was pretty good.
Paul McCartney and Wings
4/5
This album was such a treat! I had heard the title track before and loved it. It was good to hear that the rest of the album matched up to that track! Paul McCartney is perhaps the most well-known artists out there, and it's for good reason. This album is timeless. The music is great, the songwriting is great, and the vocal performance is great. It's not the absolute best of his work, but it is pretty up there!
Led Zeppelin
4/5
I've heard many times that this is the best of the best when it comes to Led Zeppelin albums. It did not disappoint. Truly just a classic with hit after hit. I can't call it exactly perfect. There is a song or two I would likely skip over in the lineup if I were to listen through again. However, this album is well known and beloved for a reason.
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
I'm not familiar with Superfly, nor was I expecting to see a movie soundtrack on this generator. That being said, with lack of context, this was awesome. This was funky, soulful, and just overall a fun listen. It kept me hooked from start to finish. I may just have to watch the movie so that I can feel it in all its glory!
Fun Lovin' Criminals
2/5
This was fun at first. A bit corny. Then it just started getting more and more, for lack of a better term, simple with each passing song. A lot of the songs got to be pretty repetitive. You would be able to point out the name of each song within 30 seconds of listening to it more than likely. It's usually the phrase they're repeating over and over again. This may lead you to believe I outright disliked this album, but I didn't. It may have been really simple, but it is what it promises to be. Fun. Goofy. It had some charm to it, but it isn't something I intend to revisit.
Sonic Youth
2/5
I thought maybe, just maybe, this album had something going for it after the first couple of songs. Then it nosedived right into being monotonous, tone deaf noise. Mildred Pierce was the track that sent me over the edge. I understand that this is their art, but it is not for me. I will give it a star for a strong start and ok ending.
Dolly Parton
3/5
I'll say this, I am just not a big country fan. Especially "twangy" country. However, this album was incredibly charming. These three women create lovely harmonies together, and the result is a soothing, beautiful album that I think anyone could enjoy a bit. It doesn't increase my enjoyment of the genre by any means. However, it was quite nice.
4/5
"I mean, hey, it's the Wonderwall album." That's the only thought I had when I was looking through the track list for this album. To my surprise, this album was far more than it's hit single. It didn't even come close to being my favorite track by the end. I think this album, in its entirety, deserves more love and recognition than it gets. The vocals and lyricism are great, and don't even get me started on that guitar. I could listen to it for hours. I was pleasantly surprised by just how fantastic this was.
Beck
3/5
This really is a pretty album. Beautiful voice, lyricism, and soothing guitar. I just didn't particularly vibe with the mopey aesthetic at the time of listening to this album. I think, when I'm in a specific mood, this would absolutely speak to me. I also just prefer the older Beck songs, usually. Not by any means a bad album, but it was one that I did not particularly connect to at the time of my listen.
Joan Armatrading
3/5
I'm very surprised that this is my first time hearing about this artist. Surely she would've been all the rage in the 70's with a voice like hers. Gorgeous, melodic, and pleasant. This is a very soft, pretty album. I'd love to hear more of her music down the road to see what else she has!
The Kinks
3/5
With how oversaturated the presence of British rock bands are on this generator, this was actually one of the better ones. I know that the title track is the hit off of this album, but I actually preferred a majority of the tracks quite a bit more. This was enjoyable and moderately entertaining.
The Byrds
3/5
I've heard a lot of bands, quite a few in a row at this point, that have a very similar sound to this. It isn't phenomenal, but it isn't bad either. A good listen with some fun tracks. I got some moderate enjoyment out of it.
The xx
2/5
Not sure what to make of this album. The vocals were really hit or miss for me with some songs being really pretty and others just being a bit lifeless. It's minimalist, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but "minimalist rock" is just not really a subgenre I find entertaining. Truthfully I don't think "boring" has any place in the rock space. However, I'll give this an additional star for a couple pretty songs.
Van Halen
3/5
I liked this album, and I like Van Halen well enough. It just felt a little more underwhelming than what I was expecting. This does not mean that it was bad, by any stretch, it just wasn't really, to me, the best the band has to offer. I know this album is beloved, and a lot of the tracks are really fun. I really loved the musicianship on this one. Good, but not my favorite.
Malcolm McLaren
2/5
Looking at the reviews for this album, I had not a clue that this "artist" stole much (if not all) of his work from black artists. Knowing that did sour my opinion of the album a bit, but I will try to keep that out of this review. Overall, this album could prove to be very fun. It did get me moving at some points (which I credit to the people who actually made the songs, not McLaren), but it wasn't super consistent. I'd be vibing with one song and the next I would be in an entirely different realm of music. While I'm not fond of the blatant stealing from black artists, this was an okay listen. I didn't hate it.
Elbow
4/5
This isn't something I would've ever expected to like, but it was really charming. For a British rock band, this group had a completely different sound and vibe from the others on this generator. Beautiful ballads, great musicianship, and really solid vocals that I grew to love more and more with each passing song. This was a standout.
Miles Davis
2/5
I really don't want to knock the musicianship, but this album was so long and difficult to get through. It's not that the music is bad by any means. The horns are dynamic, and I can certainly get behind some good jazz music. This, for me, is just too long and really began to bore me unfortunately. I'm not the biggest jazz fan to begin with though so listening to it for around two hours straight was bound to not be the most enjoyable experience.
Neil Young
3/5
The other two Neil Young albums I have heard so far were middle of the road for me. This wasn't much difference. I like the vibes, but his high notes are just nails on a chalkboard to me. Kind of brings down my enjoyment every time. Still a nice album though.
Blur
3/5
Blur is always a tricky one for me. I don't like Britpop really at all, but there's something about Blur that's so charming. It's not all great. It's a bit hit or miss if I'll like a song or not, and I felt that the second half of the album was significantly stronger than the first part. I prefer Damon Albarn's work in Gorillaz, but his charm and character is still present in his work with Blur. While this wasn't always great, it was fun and I did enjoy it.
Kate Bush
1/5
This was just jarring. I wanted to like it, I really did, but the attempts at screams just genuinely made my skin crawl each time. It was a rough listen and borderline painful.
Machito
3/5
Not exactly an album I think was a necessary listen, but it was still kind of fun. I'm not a big jazz lover most days. However, I thought this was fun. My band kid heart loved the dynamic horn section, the groovy saxophone, and the drum beats. I can't confidently say this is an album I'll revisit, but it's one I enjoyed today.
Boston
5/5
I mean come on, this is such a strong debut. A really incredible feat for a first album with several big hits. The riffs are fantastic, the songs are catchy, and it kept me entertained from beginning to end. This is one of the best debut albums I've heard on this generator. It's truly a masterpiece.
David Bowie
3/5
While not as strong as the Ziggy Stardust album, I think that this still holds up well. I gave it a few listens to really let myself get a feel for the album, and I concluded that it feels like a natural shift all things considered. It's got the quirky Bowie charm but doesn't necessarily take the same risks the Ziggy Stardust album did. In some ways, that benefits it. It was charming.
Lou Reed
3/5
My enjoyment of this album shifted a lot during my listen with some very high highs and very meh lows. Reed's voice leans monotone in quite a few tracks, which made them a bit boring, but that's not always the case. Sometimes, in songs like Wagon Wheel, it's far more exciting and dynamic. Plus, the most well-known song on the album, Walk On the Wild Side, is one of the worst offenders of the monotone sound and manages to not be all that bad because of the lyrics and guitar. I wouldn't describe this as my favorite kind of album to listen to, but I did feel it was properly balanced and was moderately enjoyable.
When I read this album's title, I did not expect it to be what it was. I was thinking more outdated, cheesy rock music. Boy was I wrong. This is truly timeless, and I really loved the hint of blues throughout. The musicianship had me hooked right away, and the vocals were top notch. My only complaint, and it's a small one because this album was incredibly solid, is that there were similarities between each song. Consistent, yes, but it would've been cool to see a track or two that broke the mold a bit.
2/5
Just okay. Not super memorable or anything, and I am not much of a soul fan.
Various Artists
2/5
This is cute, but in no world am I going to be rating a Christmas album highly. I know all these songs. I can't stand most of them. Call me a Scrooge I guess.
The Verve
3/5
This album, oddly, sounded familiar to me, but I don't believe I've heard it before. Perhaps it put me in mind of a different band I just can't put my finger on. Regardless, I thought this was nice. Perhaps a bit unmemorable, but nice nevertheless.
Iron Maiden
5/5
You'll never hear me complain about getting an Iron Maiden album. I absolutely love the riffs, and it's good to know that they have never missed from album one. I'm mostly familiar with the songs that have Bruce Dickinson on them, so getting to hear the OG vocalist Paul Di'Anno was a nice treat. I absolutely loved Remember Tomorrow especially. His vocals on that track were amazing. Rest in peace to an amazing talent.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
1/5
It took exactly one second for my ears to get brutally assaulted by whatever god awful garbage that first song was. I thought maybe I was being too harsh and needed to wait another song or two. Give the album a fair shake. Nope. That thought of "instant one star" never left my mind for a moment. It was perhaps slightly tolerable at some points, but I will not use that as a means to justify giving it a higher rating. It started awful and stayed weird and unpleasant. It's inclusion on this generator frankly makes me angry.
The Go-Betweens
2/5
True to the name of the album, it is a love song fest. I had my doubts when the first verse had a line about busting (which took me aback needless to say), but it was kind of cute. Not really memorable in any way (and perhaps a bit boring) but this was okay I suppose.
Kid Rock
3/5
I'm not much of a Kid Rock fan, admittedly. His music is about what you expect it to be: sex, drugs, alcohol, and a nice big dose of misogyny. That being said, I'm not going to let that affect how I rate this album from anything over than a lyrical standpoint. The vocals really aren't bad at all, and some of the songs are admittedly kind of catchy. At minimum, a majority have great beats. Bawitdaba in particular lives in my head rent free most days. I still would not describe the majority of the album as super remarkable. It's a bit too long for me, and I did feel that there was a lot of the same vibes from track to track. I think this is somewhere dead in the middle between a 2 or 3, but I'll choose to round up today. This is lyrically lacking, yes, but it's fairly enjoyable. The guitar absolutely rocks all around.
Pink Floyd
3/5
For as much Pink Floyd as I grew up listening to (well, listening to my Dad listen to, specifically) they have just never truly clicked with me. I know some of the tracks. I like some of the tracks. It's just a little boring to me. This concept album, while a neat idea, is not tremendously enjoyable in execution. It's just really too long for me and loses so much momentum the further along it goes. Musicianship is great, of course, but I could take or leave the vocals. It still has a charm to it that I can appreciate. Rock opera is really just not a niche I'm in to.
ABBA
4/5
I don't know what it is about ABBA, but there is something so incredibly charming about them. Every time I hear one of their songs I get immediately excited. This album has some of their best hits with tracks like Dancing Queen and Fernando, all absolute bangers. One could argue that the music is a bit corny, but I can't even bring myself to mind that. It's just so darn fun.
Small Faces
3/5
This album started out somewhat strong with the first few songs, but it progressively got much goofier. I feel like most would agree that this works to its detriment, and I would agree with that sentiment. However, I think that it, in some ways, the "Britishness of it all" is made more enjoyable due to this tone shift. It just comes far too suddenly. I would have preferred for the entire album to be this way or for it to follow the trend of the first few tracks. Overall, it's not bad just not my favorite.
Van Morrison
2/5
Not much to say. Just a little too boring and a little too long. Another mediocre folk album.
Miles Davis
2/5
I'm not really a jazz fan, so this doesn't exactly get tremendously high marks from me. However, I will say that I truly do appreciate the talent it takes to play like this. I have band experience, and, as someone who has heard bad horns and good horns, this was good. It just isn't for me, unfortunately. If you like jazz, however, you will LOVE this!
Metallica
3/5
'One' is an absolute masterpiece without a shadow of a doubt, and it was the only song I knew off the album prior to this listen. I have to say, I'm a bit bummed out that it didn't get anywhere near that level throughout the rest of the album. The musicianship is, of course, great. It's Metallica. It's always great. It's just not as exciting as I was hoping it would be. I assumed this would be an easy 5 star, but I just can't justify a rating that high. That being said, a "meh" Metallica album is still a pretty good album overall. I just wanted a little more. It felt very "samey" between some of the songs.
R.E.M.
4/5
I have been a pretty big fan of the singles off of this album for a long while, so I was excited to hear what else the album had to offer. It was heavier than I expected from R.E.M. (which is not at all a bad thing). It's exciting throughout, the music is great, I enjoy the vocals quite a lot, and the lyrics for most of the songs are very well-written. It feels timeless, in a way, and I really enjoyed it.
Sigur Rós
2/5
This is pretty good music to fall asleep to! Ethereal and soft (for the majority, there's a couple songs with breakdowns). It sounds like it comes from a different planet. Generally speaking, this just isn't really my thing. It was overly long and frankly somewhat boring for the majority. I would put this at like a 2.5 if I could, but 2 feels appropriate.
Elliott Smith
2/5
Can't help but feel like I heard this same thing before by a different artist. The acoustic guitar is really pretty. Just kind of feels like the same soothing, somber vibe from start to finish with no deviation. That's fine (and could just be his style), but a couple of times I didn't even realize the song had changed really. It just kind of bored me a bit.
Os Mutantes
2/5
Well...it's quirky! I'm not really into the psychedelic stuff. Lyrically, I can't judge since I don't know the language. So going off vibes alone, not very pleasant to my ears. I don't know what instrument or device it is, but there's something on a few songs that just flat out was painful to listen to. Like a shrieking noise. I did think that the handful of ballads were kind of pretty. Sometimes pitchy though when all the singers are trying to harmonize.
Milton Nascimento
3/5
I really love the vocals on this one. Very pretty. I don't speak the language, but these songs feel very meaningful. This album was a very refreshing listen. My only issue was that I did have to break this listen into two chunks as it drug on just a tad too long. It's just simple, pretty music that I enjoyed a decent amount. Definitely nice to get a fairly good Brazilian album off the heels of one I didn't really like the day prior.
The Mars Volta
4/5
I've never really considered myself a prog rock fan, but this was pretty damn good. Really loved the upbeat vibe and the Latin influence sprinkled in made it feel special and unique in comparison to other prog rock albums. The vocals were impressive albeit sometimes a bit too much. I do think that a couple songs fell into the trap of sounding a bit samey, which is funny because I didn't really even absorb most of the lyrics in the songs. This aside, this freaking rocked, and I really enjoyed it.
Dolly Parton
3/5
I really don't like country music, but Dolly does make it tolerable for me. She really does have a pretty voice. There's something about her that just makes me smile. Maybe it's the wholesomeness. Still not a country fan after this one, but for what it is I thought this was nice.
Kanye West
4/5
Kanye West is polarizing, and I have always been on the side of not liking him or his behavior. I typically stay away from his music entirely. However, I'm going to keep those opinions of his character separate from my opinions on this album. The beats on this are just amazing. Incredibly catchy and kept me hooked throughout. I was worried about the length of this album (my exact thought was "of course Kanye's album is this long"), but it didn't even wind up playing a factor in my listen. The flow is great, lyrically really strong, and I hate to say it but Kanye is pretty darn talented.
Ali Farka Touré
2/5
This was alright. Started off kind of strong but just went on for a bit too long in my opinion. The guitar is nice. I just can't picture myself ever returning to this album. It didn't do much for me, but it wasn't unpleasant.
Dexys Midnight Runners
4/5
Not sure what happened between this album and Don't Stand Me Down, but this was leagues above that album. Vocals were actually present and pretty darn good overall, with maybe just a few instances of being a bit too over the top. Love the upbeat tracks, especially 'Come On Eileen', and the dynamic, unique musicianship. I'd put this around a solid 3.5, but seeing as I could definitely see myself revisiting this album I lean toward the 4 star.
The Stone Roses
3/5
Not much of a fan of Brit Rock, but this is pretty good. Some fun beats. I can't understand a word the singer is saying though which is kind of a bummer. It's a really laidback album perfect for a casual listen. I didn't necessarily think it was anything tremendously impressive, but I still enjoyed it a moderate amount.
Nine Inch Nails
3/5
I'm never sure how to feel about Nine Inch Nails. Maybe if I'd discovered them a few years prior to when I did I would have some kind of nostalgia for their music and enjoy it more. Now, however, it's just a bit too "aggressive" for me. I appreciate their art. I think the musicianship is great, and I liked the vocals a decent amount. This was just a miss for me today.
Bob Dylan
3/5
Every Bob Dylan album I have had on this generator has been pretty consistent, with this one probably being the best of the three I have heard thus far. Tangled Up In Blue is gorgeous and definitely the best song on the album. I'm still not a tremendous folk fan, but I think, for a folk album, this is among the stronger ones on this generator so far.
The Offspring
3/5
The only song I know by this band is 'You're Gonna Go Far Kid.' Which is kind of a surprise after listening to this album because it doesn't even sounds like the same artist. It's still angsty, perhaps a little more than I prefer now that I'm older. However, I still found this pretty enjoyable for the most part. There are some great riffs in here that are worth noting!
James Taylor
3/5
This was a pleasant listen. Nice vocals and lyrics with soothing guitar melodies. Not really my type of music, but I thought this was pretty decent.
Frank Sinatra
3/5
I've never been much of Sinatra fan. His voice is beautiful without a doubt. I will not deny his talent, but all of his songs are very much the same. Lots of yearning, bordering on desperation at times, but for the most part kind of romantic in a "dancing in a black and white romance movie" kind of way. I get some decent enjoyment out of it. Just wish it didn't all sound the same.
Oasis
4/5
I can not for the life of me understand how this band is a) misconceived by some as a one hit wonder and b) how 'Wonderwall' is this band's biggest hit when bangers like the ones on this album exist. This was another incredibly solid album by Oasis with catchy tunes accompanied by phenomenal musicianship and great vocals. Almost every song was exciting and held my attention, and I was sort of disappointed when the album concluded.
Stan Getz
2/5
Not tremendously into the jazz/bossa nova stuff. That being said, this is okay. I think it's perfectly pleasant background noise. I just can't help that feeling of "this would play during cocktail hour" or "this would play in an elevator." Perhaps not the best way to look at it, but it's definitely what my mind defaults to. It's a bit boring to me. I think you'd love this if you liked jazz! I just don't personally.
Yes
3/5
Prog rock is one of those genres that is usually really hit or miss for me. This, surprisingly, was right down the middle. I didn't think that it was fantastic. I didn't think that it was always interesting. However, there are some great moments in here. An awesome riff here or there or a nice harmony was enough to get this album a mediocre rating from me. I think it has great elements throughout, but I wish those moments were more frequent and celebrated.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Speaking from a strictly historical perspective, I think this is kind of a neat listen. I think its status as the first Rolling Stones album is the only thing reason that it is included on the list though. While still a fun listen, this album wasn't anything groundbreaking or special. Just a fun, folksy little album.
Killing Joke
3/5
I really am just so weary of all the albums with this EXACT sound on this generator. I don't think it's a bad sound (I don't like the vocals, but the musicianship is kickass). I'm just starting to not get very excited about albums like these because I know that I'll just get another one three days from now. I will still, obviously, give it points for the amazing musicianship as this album deserves.
Jack White
3/5
When I started listening to the first track, I immediately recognized the voice. One Google search later, and hey it's the lead singer of The White Stripes! I like the vibe of that band more than the solo stuff, but it was pretty good. There was some really great electric guitar mixed into this album that always pulled me back in when the track grew boring. It wasn't exactly an album I think I'll revisit, but I still thought it was pretty decent.
The Notorious B.I.G.
2/5
I like the flow on this album. The beats are undoubtedly catchy, but I just felt lyrically it was a bit lacking. There are just some lines that really didn't age well. I could look past that, perhaps, but then we get into the skits. I just do NOT like the skits in any of these old school rap albums. I still think there were good aspects to this album. It's just not one I can picture myself ever coming back to.
Pink Floyd
3/5
I have been pretty critical of pretty much every prog rock album on this generator so far, and I fear this is not really an exception. In my opinion, I just think this album is a bit too overhyped. I could appreciate some of it, but I just don't think the beginning or ending of the album is really all that strong. The musicianship is great. Vocally? A bit inconsistent. Mostly good. I'm not really in love with this type of music, but I would never go as far as to say it's bad. It's not at all. Prog rock just isn't a genre I can get into.
Alexander 'Skip' Spence
2/5
I think this album was just pretty boring overall. The nickname "Skip" was oddly fitting, because I found myself wanting to skip almost every song on the album. I struggled to get through it. I do think there were some nice moments with the acoustic guitar, so I won't go as far as to rate it a 1. However, the vocals were incredibly inconsistent. Really not very pleasant on the ears sometimes with the pitchiness or, even more unpleasant, the odd little whiny runs (listen to Diana if you are unsure what I'm talking about). Not a god awful album, but I would never revisit it.
Hole
5/5
From song one I think I knew this would be a 4-5 star album. Starts off strong and never loses a bit of momentum. I only knew Courtney Love from her relationship with Kurt Cobain, and I truly had no idea that she was this talented. I still have some opinions about her as a person, but it was really undeniable just how good this album was. This is everything I love in a grunge album. Emotional, gritty, cathartic, and I love the Jennifer's Body reference (the movie came out after, obviously, but the title was still kind of fun. Plus Hole had a song in the movie). I saved the whole album to listen to again, I enjoyed it so much. I love a good female-led grunge band. There isn't a lot of presence of them on this generator, so getting those rare gems is always fun.
Buena Vista Social Club
3/5
I do not speak the language fluently, so I can not give an accurate judgement on this album from a lyrical standpoint. That being said, this matters pretty little when the vibes for this album are so great. I loved the vocals, the musicianship, the energy. It's an incredibly fun listen, but I do think it drug on just a bit too long for my taste. Over time, it just begins to dull a bit and loses that great energy it had toward the beginning. These types of tracks would be a welcome addition to the album if they didn't take up over half of a 15 song soundtrack.
