Liked it more than I thought I would, really picked up steam on the back half. Most of the skips on here are the songs that I associate with my preconceived notions of the band, competent strumming and singing but nothing really pulling me in. The songs where they bust out of that, which are plentiful, I really appreciated. The Razz -> Velvet Snow section was the highlight for me.
i respect it and I'm sure it hit different in its day but just does nothing for me
The guys got a nice voice and I liked a handful of songs, most of them were just background tier for me though. If there was a 2.5 stars, I'd give it that. Didn't dislike it, there just weren't a lot of songs that I liked, and really none that I liked *a lot*.
Oh hell yes. I'm a Bowie fan but really have never given this album the attention it deserves. 'Low' is such a fitting name, as its really understated and sublime. I can see why it wasn't as commercially successful as his other releases, and in its time I was more consumed with the outright punk scene, but what a treat to listen to decades later and hearing how well it stands the test of time.
this album goes so hard for 19fucking73, jesus
just can't stand this album, ugh
This album's so well done that I like it despite not caring much for the genre as a whole. The guitar work is just incredible. Also I really love the cover art.
I think I've heard more James Brown impersonations than actual James Brown so I was excited to listen to this.
"I'll Go Crazy" is such a banger to kick things off, then I love love love 'Try Me' and 'I Don't Mind'! The tracks are just laid out really well, eg 'Lost Someone' works really well because the steady buildup of 2 minute songs chained together by breathless bridges puts you in the perfect place to hear it.
Very impressed, can only imagine how cool being at this show would've been.
The story behind the album is really cool, but listening to it didn't really do much for me. I don't speak Spanish so I'm sure I'm missing a lot of good lyrical content.
Was a big fan of Whiskeytown and I'd heard a few songs off of this album back in the day but not the whole thing. Really enjoyed "To Be Young", "Oh My Sweet Carolina" ('spending money like the way it likes to rain' is a great line) and "Come Pick Me Up". Still think I like his Whiskeytown stuff better but this was a good listen.
Really loved this album when it came out. Its hard to convey now how new and different this sounded in the moment.
"Once in a Lifetime" is an all-timer, also some of the deeper tracks like "Crosseyed and Painless" and "Listening Wind" stand up really well today.
oh hell yes
just reallly love this era of Bowie, these songs hold up so well for me
Thoroughly enjoyed this. My mom listened to a lot of the Thompsons when I was growing up but I'd only heard the title track to this album. I quite liked it but thought the album might be a little on the folksy/americana side for me, I was dead wrong though, solid 4 stars and will be adding several of the songs off of here to my current rotation. Album really holds up well 50(jfc) years later.
A friend of mine gave me a home-made cassette of this right after it came out and I played it to death. I'd never really liked metal but this was something different and it just this evoked this vivid portrait of late 80s LA decadence that as a 17 year old I was all about lol.
My boy had cut Sweet Child for space reasons (80s problems) and when I started hearing it on the radio the guitar riff blew my mind. I asked him how the hell he could cut that of all songs and he said he thought I wouldn't like it because it was too soft lol
have never been a springsteen fan but this album surprised me a little. none of the songs particularly grabbed me and i don't love his voice, but i liked the overall vibe a lot more than Born in the USA et al
Talk Talk were MTV mainstays so I was familiar with their more top 40 friendly stuff, but by the time this came out I was in full blown teen rebellion against synth pop. Its definitely an interesting listen all these years later. Most of the songs don't really "land" for me, but still I respect it and wish there was a '2.5' rating I could dole out here.
This was always one of my favorite Zep LP's. Disc 2 is a six star effort for me. Ten Years Gone ("Do you ever remember me baby" has to be one of my favorite hooks of all time), Down by the Sea, In the Light et al were so different from what we'd gotten used to from them and were also so fucking good.
Great album, Smiths at their best.
Hadn't heard this one before, really liking a lot of these songs
Had no idea what to expect from this ones. Pretty much liked it, definitely worth listening to a couple of times for some of the songs to hit.
Version I listened to also had the acoustic versions at the end. I'm not including them in my rating but they were quite good.
Played this xmas morning after getting it as my album of the day and its going to be a tradition going forward. Liked almost all of these versions.
love it, mayfield's music was synonymous with 'cool' when I was growing up.
28 songs in 33 minutes lol
honestly not as inaccessible as i was expecting. the screaming is whatever, but the music in a lot of places is just 4 on the floor driving rock.
not going in the rotation or anything, but also wasn't straight up nightmare ear poison as some of the reviews had me ready for
this album and Faith were such a vibe
good album, love the beats and really liked Blood on the Leaves
kanye being such an idiot lately does negatively impact replayability for me unfortunately, but I'm not factoring that into my rating
wasn't sure what to expect, but i liked it overall. the mid-70s vibes are on 1000 here, feel like I need to go watch some Rhoda.
Had no idea what to expect here. Ended up reminding me of music for a James Bond movie set in some exotic locale. Also really liked the bongos. Probably never listen again but didn't hate it.
good blues if you're into that sort of thing (i'm not)
classic metal, can't even imagine how hard this hit in freaking 1970
I've heard the Velvets classics like Sweet Jane et al and was familiar with Pale Blue Eyes from the REM cover, so I was expecting to like this one a lot and discover some new stuff. I'd say it was a bit of a soft disappointment, Beginning to See the Light was pretty good but I felt most of the album was pretty mid.
definitely some classics on here, Like a Rolling Stone's probably one of my favorite songs ever
don't really listen to Arabic music. its not bad, if I understood the lyrics I could see liking it quite a bit more.
had this on one side of a bootleg cassette and Eat to the Beat on the other in elementary school and I still love these songs to this day. 6 stars.
its interesting, good background music
My first exposure to this album was my mom playing it to death when I was a punk rocking elementary school kid, so I'm predisposed to finding it a bit soft lol.
That said I find it an altogether enjoyable listen now (with the exception of Moondance which I feel like I've heard about 50,000 more times than I'd prefer)
Had only heard "No More Mister Nice Guy" going in, and after listening its still far and away my favorite on the album.
Album was all over the place lol. I was expecting a lot more songs like "I Love the Dead", but was really pleasantly surprised by numbers like "Hello Hurray" which I could see having a place on the indie charts today.
As much as I liked the Jackson 5, I've just never been huge on their solo careers. This album, when it came out, was pretty much elevator music to me and that's still where I place it. Its odd because I consider myself a pop fan today, but dear god did 80s pop sound like bland crap.
Some of the songs, Like "Miss you Much" and "Escapade" I could see liking with a different arrangement/production but as it is I couldn't even make it to the end in one sitting.
thought i'd like this more but just not feeling it. some of the music's ok, i really am not crazy about the vocals
Good find for me, had never heard of Shuggie and enjoyed the album, added a few of these songs to the rotation. The better tracks gave me Curtis Mayfield vibes. In the upper tier of my 3 star albums.
Liked this much more than I was expecting. Ry Cooder's great.
my man has very particular boundaries with regards to his footwear
Never heard this before but I like it and have added a bunch of these songs to the rotation. Nice upbeat poppy punk.
man this album is such a vibe, dropped while i was in college and really takes me back
not something that i really feel like listening to anymore, for some reason q-tips flow just feels too specific to a moment and its weird listening now. still, the way it hit in its time was epic
