It's ok. I found it a little boring and hard to listen to at some points.

Pretty cool. Liked the instrumentation and the laid back feel of it all. Definitely strikes me as a precursor to peak 2010s indie rock. Would listen to again, many good songs for chillin out

Queen of Denmark is the sort of album that I thought was completely extinct in 2010, an MOR album with actual melodies that might have been featured on adult contemporary radio station back in the late 70s, made with consummate craft and featuring the rich baritone of John Grant. The only thing that would be out of the place back in the 70s are the lyrics, which are often absurdist and/or profane. Now, MOR is far from my favorite type of music, and if there was ever a genre that was irrelevant in this day and age, it's MOR. It's almost as if John Grant was daring the cultural gatekeepers to throw a fit when he made this album. But damn if he doesn't do a good job of it. To be honest, I didn't really enjoy Queen of Denmark much, but it's hard to imagine how Grant could have improved on it, considering what he was going for. Okay, now that I've listened to this all the way through, I'm going to dock it a star for a couple of pretty awful songs, Silver Platter Club and Jesus Hates Faggots. Actually, I have nothing against the lyrics. It's the music, which gives away the joke. If you're going to subvert MOR with cynical, outrageous lyrics, you've got to play it straight, no pun intended.

Never heard of this album, or artist, before but it was really great. Very, very cool.

Boy, this one was a bit of a rollercoaster. It's a collab with Midlake and they're amazing talents so it sounds great. But there are several problematic things with this album. Grant's lyrics are often just ridiculous and out of synch with his delivery. The song "Sigourney Weaver" has a line that goes, "I feel like Winona Rider in that one movie about vampires. She never got the accent right and neither did that one guy." And the song "Chicken Bones" is just utterly ridiculous. On top of that, several bits of music are directly bitten from other artists. "Where Dreams Go To Die" hinges on the musical hook from "Across The Universe" by The Beatles and it just goes downhill from there. Which is a shame because it's a good listen ... until you start to really listen.

Didn’t really enjoy it. Maybe 1-2 songs I didn’t mind.

Well this was very enjoyable. Having had a good old go at this album when it first popped, I still recalled parts of it and Marz in particular was stuck in my head for hours later. There's a real darkness in his music that means it isn't for everyday consumption but theres soul and there's hooks and there's fun and there's a little nudge at the man and there's a not-an-insignificant splodge of honey-like vocal melodies. Haunting and beautiful. Thanks MATE!!!

There was a moment in time, about ten years ago, when just about every artist seemed to be a solo male, with an appealing baritone singing catty-confessional lyrics over a piano and some horns. This is fresh out of that era, and I started off wary. It didn’t take long for Grant’s own brand of snarky to shimmer through and break down my defences, with his references to Sigourney Weaver, and Winona Ryder (she couldn’t really do the accent/but neither could that other guy), and his teetering a tightrope between debauched and debonair. His music contains enough crunch and delicacy to keep you hooked, and though not every song will stick with you, enough will, and the strong songs are spread nicely through its substantial length.

How to lift a relentlessly solemn romantic ballad? How about "Baby, you're where dreams go to die / And I regret the day your lovely carcass caught my eye." Sumptuous padded drums and baroque piano runs also help. Okay, so I'm just describing the gorgeous Where the Dreams Go To Die. Outside of that, Grant proves himself a songwriting ten-ringer again and again, serving up brilliance from the higher echelons of the Fulcrum in the order of chrous conceits that cycle through the names of different famous actress to describe how he feels (Sigourney Weaver), lyrics so prosaic they turn poetic (Queen of Denmark), some kind of Scissor Sisters pastiche (Chicken Bones), birthright circus-clowning (Silver Platter Club), I'm-so-good-at-this-I-can-say-anything home truths (Jc Hates Faggots), and nihilist satire (That's the Good News). He doesn't kid like Stephen Merrit, rock like Lou, or dance like Tennant-Lowe, but he finds a space between all three. To finish, here's one of the many magnificent runs from the kiss off title track. This review is already too long, but then again, so is the album. And as Grant shows us, if you got it, flaunt it. "It was this 'us and them' shit that did me in / You tell me that my life is based upon a lie / I casually mention that I pissed in your coffee / I hope you know that all I want from you is sex / To be with someone that looks smashing in athletic wear."

What even is this? Is it folk? Pop? Rock? I finally figured it out when I got to track 5, “Chicken Bones”… John Grant is They Might Be Giants. Or close enough. Fan-blanking-tactic lyrics. Fun music. Great vocals. I’ll be spinning this one again.

A decent piece of wholesome, "daydreamy" folk music. It's atmosphere is quite compelling and John Grant's voice certainly sounds terrific, but it borders a tad too much on the sappy side with dumbed down lyric, weird alien-esque effects and conflicting messages to warrant a future listen. 2/5.

Tried but couldn't get into this album. Don't know why it's on this list. It's not awful but it's not for me.

An interesting enough blend of soft rock, dream pop and alt country. This album stands out though for its often arresting lyrical work that primarily focuses on queer themes/experiences. If you didn't listen closely you'd might categorize this as a 'shy debut' but nothin about the substance of this work is shy at all.

Great voice, 70's singer/songwriter vibe. Feels like one that needs a few listens to appreciate it.

Now, this was surprisingly great! I can’t go into all details as it confuses me a bit just listening to it…but it is tremendous! Album full of highlights! Not gonna lie either, when this showed up on my generator there was a part of me that was like “fuck sake, sounds shit, looks shit, what the fuck” but as always, gave it a bash and it’s outstanding! Highly recommended and another one that will be purchased!

Where The Dreams Go To Die: L'inizio m'è piaciuto veramente tanto, il ritornello un po' troppo Bowie per i miei gusti ma lo perdono. Il resto de sto pezzo pure è una bomba, il ritornello è la cosa che funziona meno secondo me. Silver Platter Club: molto sfizioso, carino il testo e il finale un po' cabaret m'ha conquistato. It's Easier: Il testo m'è piaciuto JC Hates Faggots: Questa l'avrei nominata solo per il titolo ma invece m'è piaciuta parecchio. Le distorte chitarre pitchate comunque me conquistano sempre e m'è piaciuto l'arrangiamento coi synth molto organico. Caramel: Pure sto pezzo è interessante. Ci sono considerazioni generali che però farò nella conclusione. Comunque il piano me piace e pure i synth un po' a sproposito. Leopard And Lamb: Per me sta emergendo un pattern qua: non sa scrive i ritornelli. O comunque i ritornelli so il punto debole. Queen Of Denmark: Me piace la soluzione dei piatti stoppati, il testo pure carino. That's The Good News: Vabbè ma sì, perché no! Me sembra uno sbroccato un po' calcolato però sì dai... Supernatural Defribillator: Ma de che s'è fatto pe ste ultime tracce? Comunque non so se è per la traccia de prima però questa me sembra un po' d'ispirazione Rammstein, un po' industrial. Fireflies: Vabbè è finita la fase acidi. Ha rotto il cazzo co sto pianoforte però se me parti con gli archi che cazzo te devo dì, a me me ce freghi sempre con gli archi. In conclusione: Sto album è stata una mezza delusione. E' partito davvero benissimo e coi primi pezzi m'ero fomentato ma poi so diventati evidenti due tratti che m'hanno progressivamente infastidito sempre di più. Uno è il fatto che lui se sente un sacco Bowie e tutti sti ritornelloni de pianoforte con gli accordi alla Venditti, se nei primi pezzi magari glie li perdonavo, dopo un po' mi fanno alzare gli occhi al cielo. Come conseguenza di questo o forse come aspetto separato c'è il fatto che secondo me lui non è bravissimo a scrive i ritornelli e sta cosa pure pesa un po' nell'equilibrio generale dei pezzi. Detto questo ce stanno certe cose di arrangiamento che ho davvero ammirato e dei pezzi me so piaciuti parecchio. Un altro problema che ho notato è che i pezzi so costruiti appunto molto cantautoriali ma poi i testi non so abbastanza forti per reggere tutta la baracca spesso. Me dà l'impressione di voler essere un po' troppo hipster cerebrale a tratti (tipo coi pezzi sbroccati, che comunque ho aprezzato, però..). La produzione fa un po' cagare considerando che parliamo del 2010, sembra auto prodotto spesso, probabilmente lo è, però in alcuni casi secondo me i pezzi ce perdono un po'. Mi sento di essere un po' troppo duro con sto album perché m'ha deluso, in realtà comunque è un bell'album, certi pezzi me li risentirei volentieri.

Non ho apprezzato come suona il disco e anche le performance strumentali non mi hanno convito mentre alcune scelte di arrangiamento mi sono piaciute. La voce mi ha impressionato e mi sono piaciuti alcuni testi.

It was okay. I enjoyed the instrumentals. The lyrics were interesting, but didn’t really connect with the album that much.

This album simply captured me on first listen, his voice is beautifully set against the music. I agree that it is a reminder of the equally as beautiful as Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blues but I also hear other early 70s influences that haven't been referenced, in particular the Carpenters and Gilbert O'Sullivan. Throught the record both of these artists influences came across. If you haven't listened to Gilbert O'Sullivan check out his album titled Himself. Stay away from the hit singles and give a good listen to the entire album, not all songs will hit you but give it a good listen and I think you will see some similarities. Beautiful album, beautiful lyrics (some seem a bit harsh) set beautifully to music that captures his voice and the songs perfectly. I can't stop listening to Where Dreams Go to Die.

Very interesting record. I feel a bit Harry Nilsson/Magnetic Fields in terms of raw production/musicianship. Very striking lyrics and beautiful arrangements over Grant's crooning. It's a tad bit on the long side, but that also gives you more places to dig into upon further listens, which I assume will give me even more appreciation for this record. Fav Tracks: "Caramel" and "Outer Space"

John Grant's sweeping melancholy, rich baritone, and almost orchestral arrangements remind me a lot of Dennis Wilson's solo records. There's something so beautifully broken at the core of his music. I noticed I'd saved a more recent track by John Grant off a Spotify playlist, but regrettably never dug deeper until now. What a remarkable surprise that continues to unfold fresh beauty and heartache over every track. I hear echoes of Jens Lekman, Dennis Wilson, Louden Wainright III, Harry Nilsson, and many more tenderhearted piano pop crooners. It's like a more sincere Father John Misty. Every touch is so elegant and gorgeous. This album stopped me in my tracks. That major key turn into the chorus of "Where Dreams Go to Die" floored me. I wouldn't be surprised if my assessment grows over time. Favourite songs: "TC and Honeybear", "Where Dreams Go to Die", "Sigourney Weaver", and "Caramel"

i've said it before but its worth repeating. this is the type of wank that mark Chapman saved us from. if lennon had been left to his own devices and kept releasing music that wasn't filtered by the rest of the beatles this is what it would sound like. if this was the only music available in the world i would be melting out my eardrums right now. if the americans caught me and started to waterboard me this is the music that would make me crack. fuck me its bad. its really bad. like awful. to give it credit though its sent me on a roller coaster of emotions between hatred, confusion, sympathy, comedy and back to anger. if there was a 0 this cunt would be getting it. i'm fuming. nothing but sneks, its me and my baby from here on.

Easy listening but not a favorite

Ridiculous Background Choir. Nonsense lyrics without any deeper meaning. Annoying vocals. I would nominate this album for most boring ever. Stopped hearing at Chicken Bones.

Tell you what. Not a bad listen. Could have done with a few songs chopped off the album but I am impressed. Originally I thought oh no not another woodsman hippy folk album with echoed voices and clean resenting guitar pics. But then the honky tonk was thrown into the mix which brought a smile and an appreciation nod.

I should have known by the album cover but it took me hearing him say Sigourney Weaver and then the next song being Chicken Bones for me to shut this off. I'm all for the Queen of Denmark, I'm sure this guy is good friends with her, but I do not need to listen to this album before I die.

TC and Honeybear reached out and grabbed me. Where Dreams Go To Die has awesome lyrics and an uncomplicated soundscape to drive the focus on the lyrics. great tune. Then right on its heels Sigourney Weaver just comes in with the silliest lyrics. This album kicks ass.

This is inferior to the Czars albums. He is a great vocalist, but this pales to Before...But Longer

Primero lo pensé como una mezcla entre Perfume Genius y Weyes Blood (por lo que he escuchado, pues). Me gustó ese tonito melancólico, pero de repente un poco subido de ánimo y tempo, jaja, también la voz del John Grant. Luego le puse atención a las letras y me pareció un letrista estupendo. Después volví a escuchar y me di cuenta de que es de estos discos que me gustan mucho. Hay letras llegadoras, sí, pero también las hay medio bobas como "I wish I had the brain of a Tyrannosaurus Rex so that I wouldn't have to deal with all this crap". También, sorprendente la mención a Eduardo Verástegui (!) como referente de masculinidad. En fin, favs: "Marz", "It's Easier" y "Jesus Hates Faggots". "Silver Platter Club" también está buena, sobre todo para el wokismo. 10/10

Queen Of Denmark is a beautiful Grant/Midlake collab album that I grabbed on CD when I saw them all perform 10 years ago. The classic indie folk sound that he creates paints a picture from another time. I have always visualized his & Midlake's music as a backdrop for an underground home in the deep woods, in which animals and humans coexist and speak the same language, much like a Colin Meloy book. Queen Of Denmark hits all the modern indie folk marks with stellar storytelling, diverse instrumentation (flutes, keys, & strings), tons of humor, catchy grooves, and endearing ballads. Forgot how much HUMOR :) Chicken Bones & Silver Platter Club are delightful musically, but lyrically produce plenty of smiles & chuckles. And of course, Outer Space and Jesus Hates Faggots are my favs for their imagery and messages of true love.

Enjoyed it, good lyrics and funny at times

This album is the diary of person who has faced alienation his entire life. And the songs bring those emotions to life in a fantastic piece of work.

Enjoyed - not sure if I'd put in on the "must listen to" list of 1001 albums, but had never heard it before and will listen more.

It grew on me as I listened to it. Wasn't enjoying it but by the end I was really into it. So I listened to it again, almost a throwback to older folk from the sixties.

I'm new to John Grant, and what I've enjoyed most after the first three songs is his choice of tonal movement. It's nice to listen to music that isn't wholly predictable, and the first two songs on this album kept things off balance just enough to draw me in. From track six - "I wish I had the brain of a Tyrannosaurus rex so I wouldn't have to deal with all this crap" is a sentiment I can really identify with some days. Just finished, and I've come away a fan which I didn't necessarily expect after the first track. I'll come back to this album again for sure!

An interesting listen for sure. Both the vocals and instrumentals are very clear, with some enjoyable melodies here and there. I was caught off guard by some of the language on here, particularly the tirade of slurs on the song whose name I'd rather not type out. Even if it's done artistically or as part of an evil character, it's still weird. Nevertheless, I liked a few songs on here. Kind of strange that this was released in 2010, I would've guessed '90s or '00s. It feels older. It's a fine project, but mostly forgettable. Favorite tracks: TC and Honeybear, Sigourney Weaver, Outer Space. Album art: Somewhat intriguing, but it looks so artsy that it made me want to hate the music. But I loved the first track, so that was dispelled pretty quickly. 3/5

This is pretty great. Emotional, strong - definitely something I was skeptical of going into but it ended up hitting me pretty hard.

I started out really liking this, but then got tired of the voice/lyrics about halfway through. Would’ve been a damn good EP. This also feels a bit like the perfect example of a record from the 2000s+ that would have been praised by all the indie rock press, but that is actually a little boring to listen to and is super light on the “rock” part of that genre tag. There are worst offenses. THREE STARS!

They are weird and I'm not sure if this is some kind of poetry that I don't get or they're just silly lyrics. Other than that an interesting album.

Elton John meets Bo Burnham

Originally I thought this was going to hit the same vibe as Joni Mitchell, Fred Neil and Tracy Chapman for me, where I could appreciate the lyrics but the music wouldn't move me. But I feel like the record slowly evolved and became catchier with each passing song. Legit, it was like, gaining stars as the tracks went on. "Sigourney Weaver" slaps. A lot of tracks do.

simple boring melodies, uninteresting lyrics and music

Lush and made me feel at peace. The lyrics threw me off half the time, but the instrumentation, musical arrangement, and vocal delivery saved it every time. So close to being a 5-star album but not quite there.

2/3 Got real deep on his personal struggles, not living up to certain expectations. Respect that alot. Standout Tracks: Where Dreams Go To Die, Chicken Bones, Silver Platter Club, Jesus Hates Faggots, Queen Of Denmark

First album I haven't actually hated. Some of the music was absolutely beautiful, but nothing stuck out for me.

Absolute fantastic album from someone I've never heard of before. I'm ~250 songs in to the 1,001 albums book, and this is the first one where I stopped what I was doing to read the lyrics as they were sung. I'm so happy I discovered this album and this artist. Will definitely be listening to more. Sigourney Weaver and Jesus Hates Faggots are the best, but the rest of the songs have fantastic melodies and harmonies. Really well done.
