Reviews (page 7 of 8)
He has a pretty boring voice.
Odd bit, this one. Mostly folk, but entirely boring.
It's sonically beautiful - well recorded and lush. But, the songwriting, both musically and lyrically, is supremely dopey. It's like a successful actor who's always wanted to make an album; or, the incredibly irritating guy from school whose belief that he was clever and funny never wavered, even as his every utterance was met with confused stares, killing whatever conversation he was a part of.
Hey, this album. I saw it in the 5-star section while snooping around someone's profile a few days ago and had to check out what this was. That being said, I don't actually remember what genre this music is. Likely something artsy and indie with prominent pianos. Like sophisti-pop, but if that genre wasn't long-dead in the water by the time this album released. Here goes. Nope, indie folk. I'm gonna say it. I will be using the r-word as a pejorative once again - you'd best prepare yourself. This is Reddit music, complete with a number about how evil Christians are for being mean to gay people while cowering away from saying anything about other forms of organised religion since that would require being critical of hecking wholesome minorities and/or violent, subversive, inbred mud people who throw gays off buildings and worship a warlord pedophile who was anally raped by Indians and died in the arms of his child bride, proclaiming her to be his favourite concubine. The lyrics are eye-rolling on the whole, though outside of the milquetoast misanthropy this album was tolerable. The songwriting is generally decent - all of the songs have solid vocal hooks decent performances. The instrumentation is fine too, if minimal. I liked the eloquent pianos, the soft percussion, the tender strings and the delicate indie guitars. Overall, this was a competent, if dull listen. Book time. "...a joyfully pure sound". "...an album of wit and beauty that has its fair share of anger". "In the end, it’s the beauty of the voice and cleverness of the lyrics that stand out". Wikipedia says this album was well-received by critics, but that's about it. I'm inclined to favour this pick. The music is competent, and it does have some historical significance. This is very much a millennial album in both style and subject matter, and it corresponds with the revival of folk and popularisation of indie folk throughout the late 2000s. I've yet to come across too many albums from this niche, so I suppose I can let this one through. I cosign this inclusion.
Interesting at times. Overall not really my jam
a couple of decent tracks; Marz, Silver platter club. But on masse just not my thing and considering this it was difficult to listen front to back eap given the length of the album.
Kind of annoying tbh but not bad-sounding. 2.5
Som of the lyrics were quite jarring
5/10

There's a funny old-fashioned quality to this guy that feels corny at times.
Something about his lyrics really chafed.
More or leas
Bit of a mixed bag, some nice ballads, but then some weird songs and electronica. Overall experience is a bit underwhelming.
Music is okeyish but melodies and lyrics and attitude cringiesh
I didn't like this
i described this guy to my friend as, “a bad jeff buckley impersonator who wrote his lyrics by flipping to random pages in the dictionary”. i liked it to begin with and then felt like it wasn’t even worth listening to around 30 mins in
heh, this is like a kid singing a non existent song, making up lyrics as it goes or... trying to fit any sentence into a song...funny
Nice musically- which hides the hate and venom of the lyrics. Damned shame, he could have made good music were he not filled with darkness.
This is not for me! What do you even call this music? I listen to a lot of different stuff and have never encountered this guy or this genre. Some interesting melodic stuff from time to time but not nearly enough to hold my interest.
Can't tell you how much this reminds me of Scott Walker. Too cute by half. I get the tortured singer songwriter thing, but this is just silly in places. Come on, "I feel like Sigourney Weaver when she had to kill those Aliens." That's like 60% an the scale of cringeworthy lyrics on this album. Yes, it's heartfelt. But it reminded me of a poetry chapbook that I made when I was 18. To me, it was deep and pithy. To anyone on the outside that had actually gotten laid, drunk, or stoned....
Pretty dull stuff for the most part.
Started very slow and melodic but liked it more as the tempo picked up a few songs in. Then a bit too slow toward the end until the last song which was better. Some clever and fun lyrics like on Marz and Chicken Bones. S Weaver and Silver Plater were my faves.
I enjoyed the mix of guitar and piano to back the singer, and I liked his voice, but the lyrics pulled me right out. Overly silly and esoteric.
Like an adolescent's poetry ramblings set to some pretty basic melodies.
All this album is missing is a cover of "The Nightman Cometh."
Weird one. A very boring piano/folksy opening gives way to a playful second half of goody genre pastiche with synth pop, kraut rock, new wave, and 80s hard rock sounds. From the most humorless tedium possible to just having fun messing around. But then back to the piano for more tepid ballads and ponderous strings.
Great tone but there are moments where it becomes too literal or crude that kinda kills the mood.
To me it sounded like it was written by an amateur teenager. Silly lyrics. Simple music. Campy.
A less enjoyable version of father John misty
Had some Father John Misty vibes to it, but not good ones.
2.5. Too caramel-sweet for me
So so
An album for listening to lyrics (I dont) and loving ballads (I dont) and empathising with the singer (I dont)
Nepresvedčil má...
Complex conversation, music simplistic
John Grant, formerly of a band I've never heard of, got together with a band that was on a CD given away with Uncut magazine circa 2005 that I didn't listen to... He then proceeds to make a dull album that could have been released in 1972 (and be hailed as a genius by Robert Christgau...). A couple of decent folk rock tunes, but mostly will be used as a cure for insomnia in this house.
Good god, this is unjustifiably pleased with itself. Plodding, flabby dad-rock &, excuse my French, fucking dreadful lyrics. Positives: he can sing.
'Where Dreams Go To Die' is definitely my favourite song in the album.
Starts interesting but somehow got me annoyed after a few songs. Guess the bad lyrics are the main reason I don’t like this.
A lot like Brian Eno. Somewhat of a Nothing Burger. Sorry, Sophie.
i have no idea what to do with this
This is probably an objectively good album but it’s just not for me unfortunately. There’s a lot of ‘ballads’ and it just doesn’t do it for me! I prefer some of the jauntier, almost Caberet style tunes- and there’s some interesting lyrics throughout,
Its alright. Pretty good but slow paced album. Really doesn't deviate from mid pace and slow tempo. Little to no relistenability and not much to write home about before you die.
Started out enjoying it but the album petered out quite a bit after the first few tracks.
meh. it starts good and gets progressively less good, the best songs are the first few
Lyrics are more interesting than the music, neither blew me away
not sure why this is on the list
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is a sort of acoustic folk album, with some particularly scathing lyrics. The instrumentation and vocals were ok, but the lyrical content was not really enjoyable for me. I doubt I would listen again.
This was an odd album. I get the feel of a sophisticated Weird Al album
Lots of okay songs and some decent ones, but none I want to relisten to. It would've been nice if the songs were more energetic. I don't usually care that much about lyrics but on the track "Marz", it's hard to ignore how he's just listing random things. The track "Silver Platter Club" reminds me of "Hey There Delilah".
Marz er den beste sangen, det er ikke noe særlig spesielt med albumet
Yeah we get it bro, you like metaphors
OK man and a panio album. A bit samey and longer than it needs to be.
A bit weird but peaceful and easy listening I suppose
Meh. Vocals and lyrics lacked for me. The band surrounding him saved it from being a total flop for me personally.
Competent, but a little too down for my tastes. ★★
Interesting but the lyrics border on parody at times for me.
I'm clearly missing something that makes it special. Not offensively bad, just offensively bland if you interpret the lyrics as "drugs" rather than "deep?"
Never heard of this guy...and it's pretty obvious why. I can think of better ways to be put to sleep. It also sounds very 70s and I think it was more "influenced by" than "influential".
I'd never heard of this guy, but I guess his contribution was that he inspired a generation of bearded guitar dudes to say jeez, I could make a better record than that with my eyes closed, and they did. Thanks from Bon Iver, Father John Misty, and all those guys, no thanks from me. (It would have been cool if he'd sung it in Icelandic, though).
Quirky and corny. Who knew that folk music is still alive? This album makes the 1001 Must Hear List because of the song Jesus Hates Faggots. Queen John was handed some musical talent. (2.4*s)
What do we have here? A weird alien comedy album from a Queen? Every song just blended into the next with Grant rambling on about extraterrestrial love affairs. I don't like it when the lyrics don't rhyme either. Title track and "God Hates Faggots" stood out amongst the rest of the drivel. Midlake should have left JG in musical hiatus because there is something rotting in Denmark...1.67 stars.
I can't figure out what's going on with Queen Of Denmark. One minute he's singing about Sigourney Weaver and aliens and then he's tackling conservative religion and suicidal depression. At times it felt like a children's album, at other times it felt like an emotionally charged thinkpiece about the writer's personal beliefs/feelings. The tone is all over the place and I can't figure out if it's a sarcastic album with tongue in cheek nods or something to be taken seriously. Sure it's creative, but I'm not sure I really enjoyed any of it. I can understand why someone would connect with this, but it was a little too artsy fartsy for me. 1.64 stars
The first two songs are great, but the rest doesn't live up to it. I do like that the singer explores his LGBTQ identity. Nice instrumentation too.
i'm in a bad mood - this sounded outdated and too theatre kid to me. i have the suspicion i mightve liked it a whole lot more on a different day
Not my jam.
2.5
There was a hard r in there I wasn't expecting. I think it was done for satire but it really took me out of the album. 2/5
It's a creepy album cover, which ends up being the most interesting thing about the record. It's not exactly terrible, but that's not exactly praise.
meh mid
A slow album and the singer has a nice voice. Its not something that makes me want to listen again though. It feels like an album with songs that could play on the radio but that I wont chose myself.
No
This was background music. Nothing more to say.
All I hear is Bo Burnham
Another review mentions that this is like if Lennon didn’t have the rest of the Beatles reining him in. I tend to agree.
This album is all over. Good melodies, bad melodies. Good lyrics, bad lyrics. Fun jokey songs, awful “jokey” songs. Stick to a thing
Wow, I almost didn't finish it. Outer Space and Caramel are the only good ones. The rest made me hate the album. It feels like listening to Rufus Wainwright's grandfather, but with a bigger depression and not nearly as many good melodies. At some point, I liked two other songs. I'm seriously considering unliking it just because it's so annoying to my ears.
Musically, Grant does a good impression of 70s singer songwriters, but the lyrics just aren't there. It's mostly unconvincingly affected humility and surface-level observations framed in a way that is neither poetic nor clever. That is, of course, with the exception of "JC Hates Faggots" which is a brilliant song. 2.5/5 stars.
Started off good but really fell off after the first 2 songs
agh. sure it's funny but it's not good music...
If this guy is going to Marz, please, send me to Uranus. Father John Misty says you're crampng his style.
Very mopey. Second song “Marx” is just random words? At least it seems to get better after the first two tracks Nevermind.
Mundane music with the lyrics written with the help of a Mad Libs book. It’s comically bad in parts and in others it’s just ok.
Not bad, but super odd. It has its moments.
Some kinda funny songs with some like slow melodies. Like tone down non parodies of Weird Al.
4/10 I waited a day to rate this and already forgot what it sounded like.
Nothing interesting here
Aside from the brief hilarity (and reality) of the lyrics to Jesus Hates Faggots, this was pretty slow moving and rather lame throughout.
I thought this album was kind of blase but I really did like the song Queen of Denmark. 5/10
Not my style. Tried to give it a few listens. Didn’t hate it just didn’t grab my attention.
1. honey - 1.5 2. marz - 2 3. dreamz - 2.5 4. Weaver - 1.5 5. Chicken - 1 6. Club - 1.5 7. Easier - 1.5 8. Space - 1.5 9. Hates - 1 10. Caramel - 1 11. Leopard -1 12. Queen - 1.5
Started out around a 2.75 but got worse and worse the more I listened to it. Not necessary on this list. Joins the club.
Sounds like They Might Be Giants mixed with Weird Al but isn't as good as either. It gets better as it goes on but never reaches a point where I'd want to listen to it again.
It's not shit per se, but it's definitely boring.
this was certainly an album. at first i was incredibly bored and thought this would be an easy 1. then the songs became much more interesting and the lyrics became a bit more sarcastic and witty. they were still overly dramatic but at least they were entertaining, a bit like jonathan coulton doing a knockoff bowie impression. honestly a few of them were good enough to bump this to a 3 before he dropped a bunch of slurs. i understand the ironic messaging hes going for, but unlike randy newman, who pulled that off in the 70s, this came out in 2010. at that point he shouldve known better and for that it gets dropped one star.
Not bad, just lame
What an odd album. Starts off glorious baroque pop, eases into a Scissors Sisters pastiche, then dissolves into incomprehensible whimsy. It occurs to me that for an album to make this list, it should be something that rewards constant revisiting. I won’t be in these precincts anytime soon.
This is an interesting listen. There are moments of bleak introspection at the beginning that are then followed by comedy tracks like Sigourney Weaver and “I hate faggots”, which hits a strange note mixing attempted comedy with more serious topics. I honestly did not see where the album was going to get towards the more pure comedy songs. As a collective piece it’s really hard to rate but I think it gives a look into the artist’s life experience, whether we wanted that as a listener or not.. but I’m sort of glad I listened to it as an unhinged piece of artwork. I just cannot imagine being in the recording studio for some of these tracks though. Utterly bizarre at times.
Well this is a hard one. So many individual reflections. It's like a squad of talented individuals managed by a poor coach is my analogy. I feel this is a decent band that failed to break through so turned to "comedy" to create a novelty act. The comedy theme seemed laced but not consistent. Songs like on a silver platter was coherent theme but repetitive. Same for JC hates faggots. Others were bleating tunes that were odd comedy with literally no connected theme in the lyrics to point I couldn't identify anything remotely amusing so just became a dull song. Then some songs were extremely varied and had more depth in their musicality and atmosphere generated almost to point I could be listening to a pink Floyd album. Ultimately it was a miss on comedy, it's a loss on its cohesion and I didn't really reveal it's point. It dabbled at being great at many things but failed to deliver. Bloody long too. I am sad in a way to have this opinion.
At first this sounds like a fairly standard singer/songwriter setup, albeit with lyrics that sound like someone put a random word generator in the common room of an insane asylum. "It's Easier" has more interesting, dark but satisfying melodies and was the only song that I connected with in the album. Then we come to "JC Hates Faggots" for the first WTF moment. Does anyone really enjoy listening to this? Then for some more folk rock interspersed with some soaring synth riffs which add interest to otherwise boring songs. The lyrics remained the ramblings of a madman, peaking with "That's The Good News". Someone close to Mr Grant needs to gently let him know that weird does not equate to good or interesting.
Felt really generic. 2/5
I wish there was more good music rather than whiny shit like this
Artiste inconnu. =>2/5
Tried to like it but just couldn’t. The vocals would be great for a children’s lullaby album.
john grant fixed songwriting with this one 💔🥀
Got to know John Grant as a result of him duetting with Guy Garvey on one of my favourite Elbow songs Kindling. His voice was very deep on that so was surprised to hear how different his voice was on this earlier recording. Do prefer his newer darker and deeper voice than the one you hear on this and was quite disappointed in what I heard. Just a bit MOR and meh for my taste. 2/5 29/6/25
Not for me though I did enjoy the lyrics about Sigourney Weaver fighting aliens and Winona Ryder in the vampire movie not getting the accent right
Really not my jam
Meget stille og behagelig. Lidt kedelig.
I had never heard of this album, it must be one of those UK hits that didn't really translate to the US? I think the artist was in his 40s when he made this record but the lyrics sound like they were written by a high school or college student. Was not really impressed by it.
Quite a pleasant listening, I like the voice and the vibes of this album. Not that into the last couple of songs Fav song - Silver Platter Club 2/5
Hope he was good at waitering.
The album cover looks like Daniel Tosh. As for the album itself that was too lovey dovey for me and didn't care for it too much. Marz was a weird candy poem. The most unfortunate part of this album was that the best song minus the words was the Jesus Hates song. The instrumentals were actually really cool. The song writing through the whole album was absolute rubbish. Wish this album did not come up.
This guy seems like a Temu David Bowie, I didn't hate his music but none of it slapped
Indulgent, silly, a sonic snooze fest.
Hmmm, did not like this. Folksie, trying to be quirky. Fell short for me, some songs were offensive.
Meh.
Komedialevyhän se sieltä tuli. Mikäs siinä.
A bit meh, nothing stood out to me and the album was way too long
funny lyrics, boring musically
Okay tunes
Weird but some of it was interesting. I can’t see myself listening to this again but the backing band were really impressive
OK in places but really miserablist lyrics and pseudo-folk-americana-country soundscapes.
I don’t like it but he is a cool guy.
I couldn't finish this particular album. Somehow it manages to have a lot going on while boring me to tears. I can tell that there's a ot of personal stuff going into it but somehow the music just doesn't make me care. I stopped at the song that had "you better fuck off, better leave me alone" in the chorus. After hearing that said for the third time I just thought: "You know what? I think I will."
Nope.
Maybe just wasn't in the mood or something, this one seemed to be a proper slog to listen to. Far too much empty space.
Not without charm, but too musically Cute for me, too lyrically Clever.
Meh.
Looked at reviews and there’s basically a ton of 1’s or 5’s, and I figured this one would be a bit of a rollercoaster. Musically it is beautiful, ethereal guitars and dreamy synths so that’s a big plus. Makes me want to listen to Midlake’s other works. Besides that, there are several problematic things with this album. Grant's lyrics are often just bad, ridiculous or completely out of synch with his delivery, which is extremely one-note. It feels like the earnest ramblings of a depressed, anxiety-filled high school theater kid. On the surface it’s a good listen ... until you start to really listen. 2.5⭐️
2.75
This was pretty but not a big fave. Does this dude sing for fleet foxes??? Rly reminded me of them
meh
I'm surprised I haven't heard of John Grant before. In 2010, this was exactly the kind of music I was in to. Which is maybe why I can't get in to this now...it sounds like everything else I was already listening to. I do not hate this, I'm just kind of bored by it? I hate to use the word "derivative," but that's what came to mind. He's got a great voice, the music is good and even kind of catchy at times, and I respect a musician who is delivering a message or statement with their lyrics. I could see myself giving this a higher rating after spending more time listening to it, but with so much other music out there that excites me...I don't really care to?
Very boring zzzzzzzzzzzz
I wish they hadn't convince this guy to make new music 2/5
Firstly, I don’t understand why this was included. Maybe the artist is a blind spot for me but I just felt it was nothing special, considering it only came out in 2010 and therefore hasn’t even stood the test of time like most of the entries. Secondly, I was kind of hating it until ‘Sigourney Weaver’ when I was like “ohh some of it’s meant to be funny?” and then it grew on me. Moments reminded me of Josh Pyke in terms of the cadence and voice, with others like Jonathan Colton or Custard in subject matter and style, that sort of thing where it’s kind of ironic humour but not laugh-out-loud funny. So overall, not bad but still kind of dull and odd.
It's OK, it's not something I would go out of my way to listen to, and to be honest, this list is a bit bogus with the bias towards random English musicians who really aren't ground-shattering in their music. Yes, the big names are covered, but this guy? Come on, I could live without hearing this album and be OK with it. 2/5 because it's not some god awful progressive rock opera shit.
I've never heard of this. I kinda liked the first two songs but then it really becomes a drag.
Varied musical styles and some pretty amusing lyrics. Overly long and not really to my taste overall. Probably not one to revisit. 2/5
Here we go again. Another album whose first-track prognosis proves itself correct. What’s that you ask? My thoughts 30 seconds in were “Oh, right, it’s loser music!” “Jc hates Faggots” didn’t garner sympathy from me. I’m just homophobic now. Also, he managed to do a whole “We Are the World” of slurs in the process. Like, dude, dry 2010 GarageBand backings that my primary school piano teacher could have put together with an IKEA-unique American accent singing tragically unwitty lines over it should never have sold this well. Furthermore, this album should not be in this list. My tendency to dislike music that people I don’t want to be like would listen to has been reaffirmed after listening to this sleepy faggot moan over a non-copyright instrumental for 69 minutes.
Sleep AIDS.
Nothing stood out and both the lyrics and music come across as pretty generic
Golden champagne juicy grapefruit lucky monday High school football hot fudge buffalo tulip sundae Almond caramel frappe pineapple rootbeer Black and white pennyapple henry ford sweetheart maple tea what kind of word salad is this?!
the lyric writing feels like why i havent really gotten into a divine comedy album despite liking some of their songs, the music tastes as full of flavor as sparkling water maybe i just have too much experience and too many preferences when it comes to 2000s-2010s sort of indie stuff
Father John Misty owes this guy one million dollars for ripping off his entire thing. Tongue-in-cheek baroque arrangements with lyrical topics such as sex, money, fame, love, self-loathing, etc etc etc. I felt like I was listening to a better version of FJM, though I will give Tillman credit: he never wrote a song with a bunch of slurs. Overall, I see why this is an impressive record but I was underwhelmed.
I just couldn’t bring myself to finish this. It’s not inherently bad I just didn’t enjoy it, its cardinal sin was that it was plain boring. I don’t want to get to song 3 or 4 for anything to happen 2.5/5
I really felt like I’d enjoy this one, but it was incredibly boring over its 1hr+. The only variant being bizarre lyrics which seemed strange for the sake of it. Fireflies down the end was decent and that’s the good news was so bizarre it became enjoyable. Certainly won’t be returning
So strange
Didn't click with me.
Some interesting ones on here. Dude seems like he's been through it in his life. And I feel for him. But probably won't be listening to this album again.
Didn't really like this is at all. It felt stuck between trying to be preachy and self-serving.. but funny and self-effacing at the same time.. what that lead to, was a droning, monotonous album, from some scorned, twisted gay bloke that still seems to hate the world. I wasn't familiar with John Grant so after listening I did some googling, to learn a little more about the seemingly self-indulgent and yet self-sympathising 'maverick' behind this album. I get that growing up gay all those years ago, things were understandably difficult and that attitudes back then were inherently different.. but an album that centres around that doesn't really age well for me, because being gay is fine now.. if anything it's too tame. You need to be a prancing feathered, gender-queer, oat milk latte chugging, wheat and oxygen intolerant oddball, in order to try and carve out some forced and worn out victimhood arc to your 'story'. John Grant just being gay, angry and not very funny for an hour and nine minutes, in 2025.. is just a bit boring. Despite the mildly scathing review above, I do have some sympathy for John. Upon reading more about him I found out he's HIV positive.. and he apparently found this out whilst in a shoe shop. I don't know what type of shop this was.. but I'd probably be a little miffed too, if I'd popped out for some new footwear but came back with the same semen stained espadrilles, and an AIDS diagnosis.
Not sure what that was but it’s not for me.
Why is this album on this list?
Listened Before? N I don't know, man... there's a lot of indie rock on this list and I don't really understand why. Its fine. Definitely didn't improve my life listening to this collection of medium to long songs. Didn't resonate with me at all. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Marz
Eh, it’s okay; but at 3/4 of the album he suddenly uses a very stereotypical German accent for some reason.
Overall I thought this album was pretty good but also had some notable flaws. It was a very mixed bag, which was evident with the tracks from this track list that i did enjoy, the ones I didn’t enjoy and the ones I just felt neutrally or couldn’t make my mind up. There are some really powerful one and some really meh ones. Didn’t quite click with me but I’ll be sure to visit some of his other music after checking out Queen of Denmark.
I don't know who came first or whatever, but this guy sounds a lot like Father John Misty.
Not my jam what so ever
It was actually ok
Generic, but pleasant, music with silly lyrics. It really started to annoy me in the second listen.
I didn’t expect this album to sound like it did given the album art. That said, while the music was pretty, sometimes beautiful, the lyrics left me wanting. They’re very weak. No poetry there. Much of it quite literal and sung by a voice that is not quite good enough to elevate the words. Quite a frustrating listen.
Robotic deep voice singing, too long, and the final songs were quite weird. Stand-out: Marz
Queen of shite more like it
I don’t hate it.
This started off so so, and the longer it went, the more I lost interest. I did find ‘Sigourney Weaver’ amusing though.
2010 was a period in my life where I was so in tune with new music coming out, so when I see a "must listen" album from this era I am simultaneously intrigued and worried that it's going to be something stupid. This album is somehow both intriguing and stupid. I think it primarily comes down to the lyrics. The Beatles/Bowie-esque arrangements backed by lyrics that would make Zappa proud just doesn't work for me. He reminded me of a less serious, less poetic Andrew Bird, but I'd rather just listen to any Andrew Bird album than this. It's not interesting enough musically to make up for the weirdness and cheesiness of the lyrics.
There is a sweet spot in the middle of this album that is good. It is bookended on the front and back by a bunch of boringly annoying songs.
Another baffling inclusion on this list, and it’s not even downright terrible. The music and John’s singing is fine. The issue is the lyrical content, as it’s just cheesy as fuck. The lyrics are what I would expect from Eurodance songs, not a pop folk album. Due to that this album felt like wasted potential.
Ehhh, it's ok. Not anything that I would choose to listen to again, but nothing that offended the ear. Just not my style to be honest.
His voice didn’t move me in fact this whole album rubbed me in the wrong direction!
sometimes the line between satire and pretentiousness is very thin - or was it just bad lyrics?
Not into this at all.
I wanted to like this, but some of the lyrics weee just too on the nose. Felt more like a parody album in spots.
2 out of 5. A bit bland but there were some nice melodies here and there. Just not for me.
Not essential.
Never heard this before. Interesting to have a modern artist use 70's style. The arrangements are okay but I don't like the songwriting it the singing. Very disappointing. Close to 1 star than 3.
First few songs I thought this was a 3 potentially 4 but by the end it was lucky to get 2 stars
Listening to this album was like being at a Poetry Slam and the poet is autistic Sagittarian.
I'm not entirely certain what I just listened to. If it happened to be playing somewhere I could listen to it, but I don't first myself seeking it out again. Not sure why it's on this list.
Not quite my tempo.
I did not like it. I don't really like the solo acoustic type of vibe.
Could not get into this, did not feel it at all.
This guy likes the Beatles
All sounded the same
Nice voice but lousy songs. Am not aware of Czars and after experiencing their leas singer I will not be researching them.
Meh
musically & vocally, the opening tracks had me interested. but the lyrics were.....random? odd? I mean-Sigourney Weaver?? was this supposed to be more stream of conscious or tongue in cheek? just don't get it & will I ever listen to again-nope
Gostei de algumas músicas, mas preciso ouvir dnv pra ter certeza que é algo que ouviria mais de uma vez, mas ao todo como álbum não gostei
John Grant's debut solo album "Queen of Denmark" aims high but ultimately falls short. While Grant's distinctive baritone and quirky songwriting show promise, the album suffers from a lack of cohesion. The Midlake-produced retro sound often overwhelms Grant's lyrics, which range from clever to cringe-worthy. Standout tracks like the title song hint at potential, but they're lost among meandering compositions. Grant's exploration of personal themes is admirable, yet the execution often feels heavy-handed. Despite moments of brilliance, "Queen of Denmark" is a royal affair that fails to consistently engage or impress.
Only slightly better than Nick Cave and he sucked.
The album is mostly annoying to listen to. Was powering through it worth it for two pretty good songs? Not really. Maybe I'll check out a different album from John Grant.
It's ok I guess......... I like the chill sad/reflective vibe. It's not world shattering. Why is it on this chart?
June 18 2025 a ver, never heard it 1. Tc & Honeybear. Nice, intro medio x pero la voz tipo cocorosie darksita le dio un buen plus. I liked it pero weird, pero I liked it. Song 6.9 de 10. 2. Marz. Beautiful, yeah! "I wanna go to Mars" as I facebooked long ago finally can be justified. Pero el disco es 2010, not sure about the status. 3. Where Dreams Go To Die. Too mellow 4me. Cute but not my thing. Skipped ending. 4. SigourneyWeaver(?). Boring af. 5. Super ladilla. 6. Entretenida, pero no genial. Coolcita. 7. It's Easier. Sad, not fun, skipped. 8. Bored, mate. 9. Jc Hates Faggots. Tienes potencial en el intro, don't fuck it up, pleah... Yeah, nice one. Buen like! 10. Good job con el synth, didn't like the song fully, pero su ending tuvo nice. 11. Nice one, not amazing but enjoyed it. LIKE 12. Boring, skipped. 13. Este pana se lanza unos temas que parecen memes, this is one of those temas, podría ser tranquilamente Töôrnst Hülpft from Chic Tweetz. Bueno, el bridge de saxo tuve calidad. Mal tema tho', skipped lo demás 14. Supernatural Defribilator. Sonido igual al anterior. Shite still. 15. Gay, boring. 16. Dreamy, pa sleepy, not great. But escuchable, lots of echo and whispers. Like solo porque algo similar me gustaría. Ehh... 2.9 pero merece el 2.
Can't say i got a lot out of this, just really not my style. Felt like it was all meshing into one as it went on, a bit of fire or passion anywhere on here would be nice.
I understand and empathize with his background. Some lyrics are even funny and engaging, like Sigorney Weaver…Winona Ryder’s bad accent lol! But overall it’s not something I would listen to again or engage with. Style is too soft and boring.
das ist nicht meine musik
I HATE DOUBLE ALBUMS!!!!
Not really any standouts here, but I think I might like some of his other work
A pretty unique singer-songwriter album with a deadpan singer and some pretty odd lyrics. Some good melodies. A couple of the songs are strong, but there’s a lack of variety and kind of an unsettling vibe about the whole thing from the album cover on down. Slurs never help either. Best song: It’s Easier
album cover low key ruins it a little; not into first song album is overall unmemorable, I don't care for his voice much and beyond the chorus of where dreams go to die I wasn't wowed at all album dragged on, lost interest towards end not for me
there's like 2 good songs that don't annoy me
Джизус ненавидит педиков - единственное что я отсюда вынес
Meh, forgot it was on. It’s just bland & doesn’t have anything that stands out
Sitting here feeling like the emperor's got no clothes on. My music taste can roughly be summed up as '6 music dad', so I was hyped to finally hear a John Grant album. And it's like... Twee melodies and teen philosopher lyrics? Maybe I just don't get the references. 1* for the album and 1 additional star for the admittedly very fun Sigourney Weaver track.
The vocals were just blah, but the lyrics were good.
It was never that interesting, but ended album of the year for several music magazines. Was it such a bad year?
It's not awful, but the lyrics went from feeling sort of whimsical satirical just winging it towards just overdoing it so instead of a potentially interesting message it's just bashing you over the head with...whatever this is. My planned rating for it dropped over time, from 4 down to where we are now. I'd like to call it inoffensive but at times it seems to purposefully strive for the opposite. The song I liked the most was Queen of Denmark, but I'm not sure I'd enjoy it in a vacuum or if I just got worn out on floaty synths over the course of the album and was just into the big guitar punches.
nicht so meins
has a song called JC hates the f slur
Definitely not for me. I don't really like this style of songwriting that's just "Let me say a bunch of words that don't really go together but over a pretty piano or guitar sounds profound." To me, it just sounded like a local punk band writing over some generic singer songwriter melody. This album took me 2 days to get through solely because it was so monotonous and boring. 3/10 Would I listen again? No
never heard of him, not adding to MY. list ...
1.6
This guys voice is good enough, but man, those lyrics take you out of it.
Man man man. Ik zou met een wat gunstige afronding een 3 gegeven hebben als het na track 12 stopte. Helaas doet het dat niet en ontspoort het een beetje richting het einde. Daardoor wéér 2 sterren.
This sounds like if AI understood how to make generic ass music. Its not necessarily bad, but only people who listen to this are NPCs
I had never heard of John Grant. Neither had you. Offerings like this make me question this list’s premise because there are surely 1001 records better or more important than this one. But anyway. The first minutes of his music I’d ever heard was me pressing play next to “Marz” because it’s a featured track. I’m in no way capable of rating or assessing his music after a casual listen, but I can hear his talent. Still, it’s nothing new or special; to put it another way, I can listen to other artists to find this. This record doesn’t sound like a 2010 product or an artist operating in the 21st century. That’s its charm and perhaps the albatross around its neck. I’m sure John Grant has found an audience somewhere or his music wouldn’t exist. I’m sure they appreciate his voice and wit more than I can. I hope so.
Like two of the first three songs, then the album completely petered out to ridiculousness.
Not sure what to make of this. Some of it seemed quite good, but some of it sounded like a bad Simon and Garfunkel tribute act.
Fun lyrics but wouldn't choose to play it
Quirky and more like a comedian playing a guitar. Not my cup of tea
Obviously very talented and at times captivating. But ultimately not really my style.
Probably too clever for its own good; post-pop pseudo-70s/80s art stuff. No thanks.
Honestly, it's pretty dull. It started in first gear and then never got out of it.
Yeah, left me a bit cold. Some songs were catchy enough on first listen but most struck me as pretty disposable. The writing had a “ad jingle” ephemeral vibe that made it a bit forgettable overall.
For large parts it was just about bearable, a couple of tracks I could listen to again.
After discussing this artist with a friend that knows him better, I went back and re-listened to some of this. interesting and some noteworthy lyrics .. but still not my jam.
Pretty average
Ok
I do like Midlake and I saw a lot of 5 star ratings so I was looking forward to listening this album. It starts out fine with TC & Honeybear but it rapidly goes downhill from there. If you don't like his singing style this album will grate on you because there's A LOT of his voice here and it sounds quite monotonous after awhile. I do like Indie songwriters but this album is a bit too commercial sounding and it does not resonate for me.
Just folk, didn’t sound very special to me
Quite similar to a couple of latest albums, in a sense that there is nothing innovative or particularly interesting going on. Its just an album of songs, which have something in common. In this case, it is awful lyricism and bad flow/pacing, like he needed to do 1-2 more revisions of the songs but decided to ship it like that. The song where John feels he is allowed to say various offensive slurs because as a gay man he has been wronged by religion and his upbringing is an interesting one. And not in a good way. This was recorded in a studio, with dozens of people participating in it, and not a single one said "hey John, maybe lets not do this one"? Instrumentals are decent enough and I didnt particularly dislike the album. Significant albums 13/34. Albums I liked 7/34. Albums I have added to my library 1/34. Not significant, didnt like, didnt add.
Can’t stand this or Father John Misty which a lot of commentators compares to. It’s like a terrible time capsule to the sloppiest of beatles/Nilsson/Billy Joel songs, with the added spice of more explicit lyrics. If you think the last 50 years of music was a mistake, and just want some sassyness added to your silly pop songs of 1973, this might be for you.
Was alright but lost interest in the second half Music for being bored
Sounds very derivative
Bit artsy and didn’t grab my attention at all
Musically interesting, lyrics were just all over the place
Did people forget how to make albums in the 2010s? This starts well, very post-Scissor Sisters, but with a unique folkiness and sense of humour. But after 40 minutes it runs out of steam and becomes such a drag.
Ok
A bit too kitsch for me
Very John Cale, but not as good
This is not my jam. I was mostly indifferent to this record.
OK. He has a definite inclination for 70s & 80s soft and synth pop.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Not so much at the start but the end was quite weird & charming Favourite song: Track 10 - Jc hates *******
hell nah
This is a bit odd. Cool in places, the title track in particular, but jarring in others (if you have a track titled JC Hates Faggots, you know you're not getting subtlety). That lack of subtlety takes something away from this - he's borrowing a lot from other artists and genres but not really doing anything other than making inferior versions of the music (the Kraftwerk pastiche in particular sounds like a lazy coverband). 2/5, has a lot of potential but doesn't live up to it.
This went from boring to weird to boring again.
Has some good songs, reminds me of Rufus Wainwright at times. Becomes boring a bit too soon tough, the small fun interlude at the end is not enough counterweight.
Not bad, not great. Incoherent. It wouldn't be on my version of the list. Favorite song: supernatural defibrillator.
Sounds all the same, not much difference between the songs on this album. Jc hates faggots was just an awful song, so unnecessary to use all those slurs.
it was meh
Similar to Father John Misty and the like, but just not nearly as good.
Kinda like he was just talking for large parts of the album? Generally a little odd but nothing really off-putting either. 2.5
Weird
I didn’t like it.
Alternative music in this time period sure was moody and depressing. It's well put together, but not for me.
This album gave me a feeling that I was listening to less outwardly comedic versions of songs from Bo Burnham's "Inside", in a good way. A very interesting album. I expected just a standard folk/downtempo indie album, but I was pleasantly surprised with some less-common instruments than I expected (flute, thumb piano (?), synths, and more). Some very odd lyrics in some tracks that felt like it was trying a bit hard to be *too* abstract or verbose. But overall, a fine time and interesting listen. One or two standouts I'd listen to again.
boff, c'est tellement weirdo, je suis vraiment dansune mauvaise passe d'album et on dirait que cela écope un peu à cause des autres. Il y de la bonne musicalité mais le paroles et les style de chansons... 2.90
Too slow and uninteresting for my tastes.
I don't know, it's not bad but the first couple of songs all sound alike. Rest of the album did not get better so didn't really get into it. 2/5
I like this. It's an enjoyable album. But I'm not sure why it would be in the "1001 Albums" book. It's good, but not great. I like the sound., but it's fairly average really. I doubt that I will remember this artist.
Derivative
There were a few songs on this that I thought were great. Like really really great The rest was a steaming pile of horse don't-don't.
Nice musicality but not for me. Just kind of drags on and on and on and… On
Njae.
Ma cos'è? È ironico?
Not great. Bordering on odd.
Kind of interesting but absolutely no need for it to be on this list. Father John Misty vibe to it.
Awful album. An occasionally interesting hook, but didn't enjoy the vast majority of this album.
Hyvät tekstit, mutta vähän sääli, ettei musan puolesta nappaa.
I'd enjoy it if I was into that kind of music
Eh
Lyrically provocative but musically less interesting
Wasn't listening to the lyrics much and then the song full of slurs really caught me off guard. Nothing really caught my attention on this album, except, again, for the song full of slurs
Boring indie music
Tedious
More meh. Just ok.
Beyond the first couple of songs on the album, I wasn't terribly impressed. This album's strengths begin with its simplicity, but by the middle tracks that same simplicity makes the tracks stand out less. Those first few songs are good though
nah
A very heartfelt album, but the tone wasn't for me. The overall lyrical tone felt adolescent and the music itself felt like a simple vehicle for the lyrics. I like the messaging, but not the musical experience.
not really something that I would remember for a long time, despite proper musicianship
I don't hate this...but I don't love it. The lyrics are ok...the music seems, off...and it took a few songs for me to put my finger on this vibe... Tracks like Sigourney Weaver, Silver Platter, Chicken Bones...and then it hit me, it's like when The Muppets cover a rock song...it's fine...but it's just off, you know? This guy is like a Muppet folk singer and even the spite or anger in some of the songs come off kind off weak. Having said that, still love The Muppets.
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Pretty meh for me… just an ok sound. Seems like he is trying to hard to be creative with the lyrics. Sounds like a mix between the Beetles (nonsense lyrics) and Ben Folds…but no where near as good.
Only made it 2 songs in. Just not feeling it.
Mid
Liked the music. His voice didn't the music. Tbh pretty mid.
Gimmick
No
Why in the world is this album on this list. With all of the great albums that were released between 2005 and 2010, what even is this entry?? I've never even heard of this guy - I'm not saying that alt music shouldn't be included but c'mon. Nothing interesting, quite bland and broody sounding, perhaps it's included for that "alternative" or "interesting" voice in the new album lineup. Best: Outer Space Worst: JC Hates Faggots
It's not bad, just not my thing at all
