One of my absolute faves of all time. Discovered this many years ago- a timeless/timewarp classic. Of course listening is not as good as watching as well but hey, you can't have everything......
Whoever put this album forward towards the list has amazing musical taste and is an incredible human being...... Four 20 minute instrumental tracks that build to a crescendo with some documentary dialogue passages - it's multiple guitars, bass, two drummers, violins and double bass, electronic noise and it's a wall of sound. I've seen them twice now and they are quite brilliant.
Ooooo.....a live album. Not just any band though and of course it's supremely engineered and slick, almost seamless. Interesting the tracks were recorded at different times/places too so not really a representation of an 'event'....... Good value for money at 2.5 hours long and if you love Pink Floyd like me you won't mind the time spent. The newer Gilmour tracks suit his voice and the guitar solos are as good as ever but I can't help but miss Roger's input. The music and support (backing singers etc) are as good as you would expect and the whole thing is well framed but all in all only for people like me.
Ahhhh...now this takes me back to the long hot summer of '76 cruising down to Cornwall with the window open. A beautifully crafted 70s album (Alan Parsons) with great guitar and saxophone solos. Lovely listening.
This is really good and it's now on Spotify!! Not that i'm an expert in World music but it's very professional, well produced and enjoyable to listen to. What more could you ask for? Superb.
I can see the Ska vibes coming through at times but this is a 3rd rate band who were at least 10 years too late. There's even Clash echoes in here it's laughable. Jeez guys does it take that long for music to reach the West Coast? It's so devoid of talent and inspiration- not a shred of originality or talent (and I hate having to repeat the same word in the same sentence). Truly truly awful (there- I've done it again).
This was more the EW&F I know (and not the one in the main list which I gave a 4/5). The two big hits just make you wanna strut your funky stuff or smooze drunkenly on the dancefloor late night at a wedding whichever takes your fancy. Just how they ever made any money is beyond me- there were about 18 of them (I mean look at the wiki for the past members). Seriously though this is top edge - Funk, Fusion, Disco and everything else thrown in. It just make you want to move!
Maybe I'm a bit jaded? Listened to a few too many New Wave bands? Teardrop Explodes? Simple Minds? Fad Gadget? and so many more.. It's ok but not that good. Simple rhythms, guitar, bass, drum and synths.
Again this is nothing special. Interesting 90s quirky rock/pop. They have one album already in the 1001 but do we need two? I think not.
I liked this- my kind of music. Having said that it's neither inspirational or groundbreaking so i've added them to my playlist but don't think they would qualify for 1001
I really want to like this band and in fact there's nothing here to dislike. If I played this over and over I would no doubt learn to love it but listening here objectively there's nothing that already hasn't been done. Pleasant pop.
I'm all for inclusion and true J-Pop is an undiscovered country in the 1001 but this is a sterile laboratory grown concoction. A pretty face can be replaced with no discernable difference.
What the heck happened to Fish?! Marillion without him is a pale shadow of the band they once were..... Seriously though it not too bad although it could have originated in the 80s. Well produced and sanitised power ballads with insipid lyrics.
I liked this- it's not earthshattering but pleasant and easy-going. The songs are quite varied too - some simple singer/guitar but some with a BAND!! She does remind me of a few singers I can't quite put my finger on right now but that doesn't matter as this stands on it's own I think.
Were these guys the OG Rock Pop boy band? They sound like a mash-up of 5 seconds of Summer and Manic Street Preachers. Insipid generic sound with bland meaningless lyrics. Oh dear....
It's fun and I'd love to see these guys live but really speaking this is a Tribute band. They are recreating a genre sound.
I've got to say all these bands sound the same so it's difficult to judge whether they are genre-defining or inspirational. I like Green Day and this band sounds like Green Day but they came before Green Day so they must be Genre-defining!
Reminds me of an 60s retro band. Very stylised but fun. I'm glad there's still these Tarantino Karaoke bands out. Quirky, packed full of ideas.......
Well I enjoyed it, so there. Kept my attention and was never dull. Certainly unlike anything other than......Maudlin of the well (which I also liked). Not that I'd listen to this all the time though- you've got to be in the mood for the noise..
Another retro-sounding Indie band. Bubblegum-pop which is a shame since I've been to Mull and loved it there.
I applaud his intention but the executon is a bit amateurish to be honest. It's kind of Nick Drake without the talent.
I like Reggae and I love Dub and this is a fine example. Varied and mesmerizing. It's a great candidate and should be on the 1001.... It seeps into your pores and you can't stop nodding your head and moving your feet. There should be more on the 1001. Superb. NB: looking at the credits on bass is Boris Gardiner who was responsible for cheesy 80s Lovers Rock numbers! I never knew! Result!!
Another great artist/band under represented in the 1001. I do love Emma better though. This is more experimental an reminds me of when Ben Howard went all strange. I do like this though. Odd, eclectic and random. Constantly inventive.
Don't know this guy and to be honest although it's pleasant and inoffensive there's nothing here for me.
It's pretty good for what it is- crisp, clear rock with no frills. Whether it's any different from all the other bands I don't know. It's early on and pre-dates a lot. But is that enough?
Not my thing but even I can recognise a claassic. Raw and genuine stuff. Can't believe it was missed out....
This is actually really good. As long as you listen 'as is' and not start thinking "this sounds like a multitude of influences mashed together"? But does that make it any less good? Maybe the art is in blending all the other bands and singers together and coming back with a cohesive sound. Plus this is the first Aussie band I've liked since 'Men at Work'.....
I like ambient and I like minimalist. I like Synth too. You might say lots of people (Eno for instance) did this a loooooong time before this guy but I still liked it. Remember the definition of Ambient is there is no discernable intrusive rhythm or key. It's in the background? It predates things like Disintegration Loops and Everywhere at the End of Time so could be classed as groundbreaking? I'll play this again.
Again I'm mystified why this was overlooked? Distinctive sound all their own it was a counterpoint to the Grunge bands at the time. It plays well even now.
It's almost a pastiche of everything and the kitchen sink thrown in. The fact they can play and are thinking about what they are doing rather than just a mindless scream saves them from a One star.
I'm tired of generic American 90's-00s Rock bands that all sound the same. So generic and dull. DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!!!! To be fair to them they did come before a legion of imitators which saves this from a One star.
Hot dang! I actually enjoyed this as it's sufficiently offbeat and interesting. I hear echoes from a multitude of other bands from Pixies to the Undertones (without Feargal's inimitable vocals). It's decidedly amateurly produced and feels genuine to me.
I can't help but find this clean sanitised music for dinner parties. The biggie award winning song is a ringer for "Days like this" by Van Morrison. Plus I can't move away from that scene in Pitch perfect where they sang off under the heading "I dated John Mayer" Sorry John.
Really not my thing- I respect the attempt (folky-theatrical fey ballads) but it's pretty false and contrived.
Early 80s American rock. I prefer the "i love rock and roll" flavour but it's inoffensive enough.
My missus said "this is enough to give you a brain hemorrhage, it's Shite!" For that reason alone it gets 5/5 from me. Seriously, I'm interested in this Drone Metal genre- very atmospheric and brooding.
Boy this is a mixed bag of tricks. Some parts are very theatrical (like a musical rock opera or Disney soundtrack) whilst others are straightforward rock ballad fare. I applaud the intention and it exhibits a lot of talent but it's not my thing so I would be suprised if I pay this again.
How have I missed these guys? Quirky, intelligent accomplished musically and fun. The videos are a blast.
Now I'm not saying I actually enjoyed this but I can recognise how intricately woven and expertly crafted this album is- it's a constant barrage of sounds and quirky noises it tires me out just listening. SOPHIE could have chosen a normal conventional route of mixing and producing Europop but instead she chose to delve into a life at the forefront of music. I respect that.
I really like this- laid back, pensive and low-key music. Dare I say Post rock? I'll listen to this again.
Sounds like a mash-up of The Libertines 'Can't stand me now' and Scouting for Girks 'She's so lovely'. Every track is the same!! It's pleasant enough but so derivative and annoying..
I love love love this guy! This album and 'Better Together' in particular. Reminds me of happy times. Watching 'Curious George' with my kids..... So chill and eaasy going. Perfect.
I know I should like this album and the band but for some reason they've never clicked with me. There's nothing wrong with them but they jump seem to blend in with so many other bands that came out at this time.
I respect the integrity and originality behind these guys but they really don't hit the the spot.
This was one of the albums I wanted to put forward as my own suggestion and sure enough it was one of the first albums suggested anyway.... Quite simply a work of twisted genius- it should be on the main list and I'm sure eventually will be. I love the lyricism and patter of the rap - it just flows and is so dense it takes a few pays to start to sink in. The production spot on- constantly changing. How on Earth did he manage to pull all this together? Did I say this was Genius? A Mad Genius.
Mmmmm.....is this from 2006 or 1986? It's quite bland and derivative. I think the issue is around the 'cult of the new'. You get into a trendy band that spreads via social media withouth realising they sound identical to other bands and singers from decades before. Not to say it's bad. Just unoriginal.
Is this for real? 10 years too late and not even what I'd consider Punk. More like a French pub band. Truly awful.
Nice enough- she has a good voice and the music is beautiful. Not too keen on the lyrics on some songs- having everything rhyme is not essential and some of them are corny. Still, overall it's a good album.
Yes, as others have noticed this is poor. Sorry- it's corny and simplistic.
Sufficiently oddball to be original it kept me guessing. In places I could get the 'Princess and the Frog' Disney vibe which was then saved by Tom Waits barfly numbers. It's original.
Oh boy this is good. Hadn't heard of him and the cover sort of put me off (I later realised he was his friend that the album was dedicated to) but the music and voices were really REALLY spot on. Soothing and sensitive. I can't get over how good this is.
Not the usual fare in the 1001 but I do love Avant Garde and Minimalist so i'll listen to this all day every day. There's a lot of orchestral/choral in this too. Loved it.
It's ok- sounds more like an Australian boyband I know but it's fun and honest. I can't bring myself to give it a poor score.
Yes it's quite New wave and contemporary with Elvis Costello. Although I respect it's integrity it has never appealed to me.
Just not getting this band. I think it's a 'Bovril' thing..... It's not that it's bad, just a bit generic.
I quite like this- it has a certain swagger about it that sets it apart from the rest. It's quite fun in a sinister twisted way.
Looks good on the surface and has some interesting moments but overall there's nothing I can find that already hasn't beendone a million times
This has 'This is Spinal Tap' vibes to it although these guys seem to be taking themselves seriously? Or are they? It's so cheesy - from the album cover and song titles it's a pastiche maybe? The songs are no different to those on other similar genre band albums. Reading up on this perhaps I'm being harsh as this is partially a tribute album.
I never liked this band at the time and now I'm thnking they were mid-80s and this is areaction to the stuff going on at the time. But even so this is random stuff- no cohesion and a mixture of all sorts of genres.
This reminds me of Performance Art rather than music (kinda like Laurie Anderson if you know what I mean). It's funny in places and a bit weird to be honest. One track leads into another to start with and it's like stream of thought lyrics that he's making up as he goes along. Certainly very original and defies genre.
Whoah this seriously strange that's for sure. I've just had Frank Zappa and now this- I just don't know what to think........ Really top notch musicians and totally oddball tracks. I can't ever see myself liking this but I have total respect.
I quite like this and have put it under 'Experimental/Ambient'. I don't think it's the best there is or particularly worthy though and not sure why the person who put this forward loves it so much.
Pretty one dimensional. The band is functional but it's all very contrived to appeal to teens. Every track is the same. Was someone having a laugh choosing this?
I'm torn on this one- on one hand I love the idea of an literary musical album like Jeff Wayne's War of the World and I really love Poe and his stories and poetry. What really lets this down is the music. It's just not good enough to match the subject matter. There's no really catchy tunes (like for instance War of the World has an abundance). It's a shame really but this is a terrific attempt never the less.
I can really hear undertones of The Wall coming in this one. It's almost total Roger Waters. So tortured. I can understand if you don't fully appreciate Pink Floyd then this is like a slap in the face with a wet kipper but if you really like them it's more of the same brilliance that can only be judged against the very best. Dark Side, Wall and Wish are in the very top league. If this album was the only release by a mediocre band it would be hailed as very special but this is compared to the others. This music spoke to me in a way other albums just don't.
I do like this band- but it's sooooooooo retro. Maybe they're hoping no-one's ever listened to Siouxsie and the Banshees or any other New Wave act for the early 80s? Still like it though.
Oh yeah!!! This is soooo good! I defy anyone to listen to this and not instantly become a robot dancer. Seriously inspired and thanks to the person who chose it!
A trip down memory lane or a p*ss take? I remember her name (pretty American teen) but none of the songs. She's a Madonna wannabe who can't hold her notes. I normally like the 80s but this is awful.
1976. Atmospheric and addictive. It takes you to another place. Just simply Brilliant.
Not my cuppa tea. This is an inoffensive quirky album that never meant nobody no harm.
This sounds so stylistically similar to other albums by the little cherub. Very good of course but after a bit it wears thin.
Sweet love of Man. Did we still produce (and even spend money) on this kind of washed out uninspiring derivative stuff even as far back as 2003? It's not like it's got anything inventive to say, or there's a fresh feel? Awful, just plain and simple.
These are really good heartfelt songs. A bit too American heartland for me but that's not his fault.
I applaud the intent but this really sounds like a lot of pseudo-Irish pub bands. It's very well done though.
I did like this. Not so much a 'band' as such but it was so well produced and at the same time it captures the vibrancy and Latin feel.
Are these quilty pleasures or a p*sstake to put these albums forward? To go through 1001 albums over the course of almost 3 years surely would teach you the wide range and breadth of music and expand your appreciation? Obviously not.
This is really good and it's now on Spotify!! Not that i'm an expert in World music but it's very professional, well produced and enjoyable to listen to. What more could you ask for? Superb.
It's not bad but so derivative it's staggering. Pleasant ballads building up in tempo, well played, sung and produced. Average.
Always loved this band- just watched them on TOTP via Facetube. Ron looks the same now as ever- truly unique. Listening to their other stuff emphasises the impact Giorgio Moroder had. One of the all time greats.
There's always something about the Nordic sound- this is really good and is like a rockier Sigr Ros? Alternative music. Det er meget godt!!
Lol! I thought this was a p*sstake but there are some decent 80s pop songs on this.
I'm loving this Postrock revolution here at 1001. Mogwai are one of my faves and although this isn't my favourite of theirs it'll do. There's something about the genre that expresses things beyond words. Visionary.
Quirky and interesting music- quite oddball to be honest. Not sure I like it but it's certainly caught my attention today.
I did like this- as some have noted this is a mash of lots of styles but they're good ones and well melded together. Energetic and interesting- well put together. Very professional.
1980? Mmm I might be tempted to say they were groundbreaking but it's so generic and uninspiring. Just awful.
Uninspiring, generic, devoid of a unique idea. This could be anytime or any band really and not 2009 Shame on them- they could have tried to something different.
I like the music itself but why bother with the vocal noise? It's just awful. It saves itself from a One star but the stupid voice is, well.....err...stupid.
I thought I'd already reviewed this but apparently I forgot to press 'Save'. Pretty perfunctory band effort apart from Marissa who is outstanding. The songs could have been a lot more I feel. An unpolished gem?
As some have noted this is like a continuation of The Wall, however it's a different story narrative and distinctly self-indulgent and 80's. It is very well produced and performed though and I absolutely love all the other Pink Floyd stuff so hopefully this will grow on me.
I can see this would be a trip down memory lane for some but it's pretty insipid really.
This is a lot better than recent 'user-proferred' offerings (French pop and Scream-metal anyone?) Definitely in the 'Americana' genre- has the usual build-up to a crescendo song structure (a real Springsteen touch). Then comes the banjo.......
Aussie punk from 2022?? You must be kidding right? Hang on, this is right up there with the 1997 Aussie movie masterpiece 'The Castle'. It's a ripper!!! The music is a vehicle for the lyrics- "The price of smokes have gone up again/A dollar 95 a cigarette", "Run, run I'm still gonna getcha/You can't hide from me, I'm a ticket inspector!" Every line is a gem. Priceless. Thanks for sharing this...... STOP PRESS: Just listened to this again and did their musical ability a disservice. They're pretty tight. Solid 5*****
It's quite a refreshing change to get chance to explore this side of Jazz. A lot more depth to it than I'd imagined.
It's pretty charming and grows on you. This band have a disarming tenderness- I wouldn't call them 'rock' but in the absence of a label I guess it'll do.
I have to admit I've a certain weakness for Shoesgaze and even though this band isn't my favourite of the genre it's still eminently listenable in my book. I love the dreamy soundscapes and soaring guitars with the whitenoise backing.
It is a mish-mash of lots of interesting influences which meld together into an interesting experience rather like a cult movie of groovy cliches. I like it despite it not being something I would normally listen to.
Pretty inoffensive 80s pop/rock. I can imagine you'd love this if it was a trip down memory lane but it reminds me of cheesy 80s movies.
Musically it's very accomplished- it sounds like a 70 Prog concept album... I'm kinda amazed people still listen to these now and reading into it transpires Steven is from Porcupine tree and has worked with, well most of the old 70s Prog groups from the 70s! Not my bag but still interesting. He's a very talented guy.
I love to see an older album on here but is it a one hit wonder? Listening to the other tracks they are actually really varied and powerful. I'm amazed this hasn't picked up more listens on Spotify so well done to the person for promoting this! What genre would this be classed as- Funk I reckon? But there's some stiff opposition... A great album. Patti LaBelle is sensational.
Oh gosh.......I initially thought it was an album by Burt but NO! It's an album by an 80s Spanish pop/rock band. Maybe they are the Latin version of Haircut 100? It's awful and no nostalgia can mask that. I truly understand why people hate the 80s now.
Oof!! Yes I can hear the Seattle sound and yes this is grungy but..... That sound is just a vehicle for the message. And what a message. Extremely well written and insightful and I find it really hard to digest maybe because it hits home to me. This is not a pleasant album but it is an important one.
I don't really know Angelo but Sufjan is one of my faves.... You can hear it's a collaboration- a mish mash of different things, some familiar and others new. It's more Sufjan I feel and listening again it's beginning to stick in my mind.
I think the other reviewers are right to point to the Animal collective and other Art rock albums. I like it- probably need to listen again a few times.
I've come across this album and band before- high level musicianship, lyrics and production. I even 'favourited' it in Spotify but ultimately it's very much in it's own genre. I like it and respect it but wouldn'y say it touches my soul or anything deep like that.
Well here's something........ Just another dull post-2000 American rock album I thought. Shades of King Crimson and others. Really interesting......
Another Seattle band from the 90s? This just sounds so dull and generic to me. Each to their own. I dunno but I think this was put forward by someone with fond memories at the time but it leaves me cold.
I can't believe this wasn't included in the original 1001? Not that's it's on my Faves list or anything but it was hugely popular and influencial.
I really like this but I have one word in my mind.......Air. Still good chillin' music this. Pleasant and melodic. I ended up putting on Moon Safari afterwards.
Ahhhh...now this takes me back to the long hot summer of '76 cruising down to Cornwall with the window open. A beautifully crafted 70s album (Alan Parsons) with great guitar and saxophone solos. Lovely listening.
Well it's certainly interesting. I think the 'unfinished' quality adds to it rather than a polished production. Ok, I'm trying to be charitable here.......
I had high hopes for this album- 70' Prog, synths and orchestral. It has an interesting cover but alas the finished product is wishy-washy cliched middle of the road ballads and a bit of everything thrown in. Shame really.
OLIVIA RODRIGO??!! Olivia??! Rodrigo? God I feel old. It's really good though and has echoes of a lot of the current singers/songwriters my kids like nowadays.
Does anyone remember the 80's? Obviously not if they think this is revolutionary? I can hear lots of other things going on here- remember Zayn? His Mind of Mine album? Anyway- it's pleasant and nice to listen to but just sayin'.....
Does this really count? ;-) Does it matter? Great band. I think the studio albums are better but that's me....
Looking back I don't think there's a single African or South American album I didn't like. Not that I listen to them regularly but better than 60% of the crap from US/UK. This one seems to have modern influences but still a good listen.
Not bad but so samey in my mind to so many 70s American singers.
It's not unpleasant and in places quite good (if derivative). I want to like this but it's a B- from me........
British rap always makes me smile because they really try to be socially sensible and they always seem to be from London so really it's Lond-Rap. This is like the Ceebeebies of rap. Sorry, give me Tricky any day.
There's a lot of similarities with minimalist music (like Glass and Reich) and after listening to more of his stuff on Spotify which is more like Western folk and Gospel I prefer what he did here. It's not traditional Aboriginal music (which I like) but this is different. A lot different. I like it and thank the person who put this forward.
Suprised this isn't on the main list. Stories of domineering and manipulative behavior but I choose to listen to the music. And the music I like. It's like Japanese influenced videogame music (also a bit like Xiu Xiu). Interesting listen.
Lovely slow and brooding folkey/bluesy singer with acoustic band on some track and other a retro soul feel. Production is really well handled - a light touch that really works. This is a good listen.
I thought 'Nick Cave'! straight away.......but it's more than just that. I don't normally like Post -punk but this is intelligent, varied and interesting.
I really want to like this but of course it's so terribly contrived. Quirky and fun, nonsensical and British but I'm not in the mood. I can't bring myself to give this a bad score. It is what it is.
Lots of great songs- covers and live too. It's really all about the vibe, Joe's distinctive voice and the 70s band plus the choir. A great timepiece. Great for a nightime listen with a beer.
After reading the review from the user who chose this I feel bad to dismiss it but it really is a niche sound. I mean they switch from screamy shouting to decent singing and back again?! Was that the same singer? It's almost silly. The band are decent and the production ok but I can't see anything here for me.
I've heard of her but expected this to be so much more. It's so Middle.Of.The.Road and like one reviewer noted it's like hiring a camper and driving down route 54, switching on the radio and the announcer says "Welcome to KYRE Country Radio, here's a litle bit of Mary for you". It's ok but could be so much more.
This defines a 90's indie-rock/Pop band to me. Not unpleasant but so generic.
Love the cover, the album and the band's name but what's the music like? It's less 'indie' Rock and more......'Indie' Folk? It's a nice listen.
I'm a dad-rock middleaged man so it may be a suprise to you but this just makes me chuckle. This is country-pop meant for middleaged ladies in Weddings and parties to dance to and I wish them well. Well produced and derivative (there's even a sly intro-copy on 'You're still the one' to 'Je t'aime... moi non plus' and it has an 80s feel to it. It's good, but not in my heart. That belongs to Ian Curtis.
Wow! This is quite something. So angry. It'a good but quite anxiety inducing.
I've tried to locate this and from what I've found on Spotify and Youtube it sounds pleasant if not entirely original.
It hits me that I slagged a Killswitch album off a few days ago and then liked this album. What is it and why? Maybe I'd heard this one before or think this is more 'meaningful'. The lyrics certainly mean more. I need to listen to the Killswitch again perhaps?
Why wasn't this on the original list?! Good pick though. Funny how so many reviewers came upon this from TV and Film samples (mine was 'Blowers Daughter' in 'Closer'). There isn't a bad song on this album- so healing and soothing and sensitive. A thing of beauty.
Not what I was expecting- like a version of 10cc for the 90's Certainly deserves a listen though.
Fresh, raw, retro New wave sensibility. I like it. It's got real attitude.
I just love this album and love BoC too. How this wasn't also included with 'Music has the Right to Children' in the original 1001 i'm not sure but they don't seem to get the recognition they deserve. Truly innovative sounds. I never get tired of being transported by them to a different place.
Have you ever seen Will Ferrell in FireSaga - a story of Eurovision? Well I'm pretty sure it was based on these guys...... This is 110% cheese and is brilliant. I need to hunt down the videos to this.....
I've always had a soft spot for Chris and 'Spaceman' but never realised it was part of a stylised act- stories in a certain Theatrical manner. Quite engaging- not background since you're impelled to listen to the words.
It has a real 'amateur' feel to it- not sure why but it scores points since otherwise this sort of thing is devoid of originality and just about as generic and stereotypical as it comes.
I like the concept of this and the cover draws me in....... but sadly the screaming gets me every time. Musically there's some interesting sounds here but then again Rage against the machine got there first I think. Still, it woke me up this morning and that's a good thing.
This is neither Ska nor Punk. This is Latin Pop? I'm not saying it's bad. It's misrepresented.
Very retro- I like it. A bit poppy but then that's the name of the game I guess.
Yeah.......I liked it. Mainly the Folk side and acoustic guitar- it's simple and honest. I like British and Irish Folk so this resonated with me. As far as the Country aspect went it was an interesting slant since I'm not a big fan. It was a good combination.
Consciously retro Synth and New wave. The sort of sound I love. It's a collection of the best music tags from Joy Division to the Suspiria soundtrack (Italian Giallo band Goblin) and a bit of John Carpenter thrown in (Halloween?) It's the vibe that I like the most- so languid and nocturnal. This could have been one of my favourite albums from 1979 but instead it's a new favourite from 2007. I'm now checking out their other albums......
This could be from 1974 or 2016. It's what it needs to be. Laid back and languid vibe. I like it, although this isn't normally my thang.
I think this really works- New Wave indie sound and an interesting concept for the album. Fresh and vibrant.
Takes me back to the 90's- it's still pretty good. Eclectic mixture of samples and beats with attitude.
It has some good moments and all the hallmarks of bands from the 90's I still play now. I need to listen again sometime........
Restored my faith in Hip-hop and is a constant stream of idea and tunes, samples and wordplays. This is a joy to listen to. This guy was a tour de force and the world a sadder place when he died. Everytime I listen to this I hear something I'd not spotted before.
Nothing new brought to the party I'm afraid. The singer started to remind me of Chris Martin part of the way through. The sort of record they put on at the end of a college student party when all the alcohol has been drunk and people are thinking of going home.
What is it about Sweden? They seem to produce so much good stuff... I liked this - very evocative and yes there are vibes of 'Midsommer' and Eurovision but that's our problem. This is consistent and anthemic. The only slight niggle is that it's very slick in it's production. No ragged edges which would have got it a 5***** ..............Oh hell! I'm giving it a 5***** anyway!
Stirring anthems and I do like Bruce- honest with integrity about the American heartland. Honest lives etc etc. The quality of the recording is amazing too. But again these songs have been included on other albums.
I've listened to most of the long collection "Everywhere at the End of Time" (I couldn't finish it) and didn't realise this came first. I can see the intent and prefer the mind crunching conclusion was something that had to be done eventually. This pulls back before the cliff's edge but is sufficiently disturbing.
I know it's a forbidden gem- a soundtrack, but this is truly one of the greatest of all time and is exempt. It's stands on it's own as a work of art. Superb.
I really enjoyed this- so evocative of it's time. Good for a play late at night with the incense smoking on the table and a bottle of the finest closeby.
I listened to it a few times - I love her voice and she's a great instrumentalist. Sensitive but fun songs.
It's ok, but there are so many of these bands they all blend into one.
I guess if I'd been growing up at the time i'd be familiar with them but to me they sound like any other well produced boyband. Devoid of originality and integrity
Good pick! My daughter showed me this at the time- really brave to tackle these subject matters (need subtitles though :-))
If this was an English band from 1981 it would have merged into history. Sort of a mish-mash of lots of bits of other bands. Not bad but not revolutionary.
I remember this band- mainly due to the odd name but it really hit me this morning. I'm thinking this is more Country than Folk but still really good. It sticks with you.
I try to be reasonable and see the best in albums but after 3 tracks I gave up on this. Unoriginal, devoid of any spark of creativity. Follow the screaming hordes.
I'm sorry but this does nothing for me and is indistinguishable from so many other singers of this ilk. They are so polished and well produced. Their songs are generic and devoid of originality.
I remember Joe- this was his moment of greatness before he got into Jumpin' Jive! These are honest and simple songs, some better than others but it captures a moment in time.
More a history lesson than a musical experience. I normally love all things 60's and especially psychedelic rock but this wasn't up my street- more a mish-mash of Pink Floyd and the Small Faces. I guess they were trying to find their niche. All it made me do is listen to Piper at the Gates.....
OMG!! This is like as retro as you can get! Only this is 1998 and already 27 years old. Maybe we could get a Retro-retro band referencing this album? I do like it despite it's faults...
Beautiful. Like listening to a fine wine, or drinking a masterpiece. What a waste of a talent but at least we have his music 60-odd years later. After listening to so much mediocre stuff in this chart recently this is a breath of fresh air.
I always think I should like this bands but the hype just puts me off. Everything is in place- musically, lyrically and production are superb but it leaves me cold. Maybe one day eh?
It's actually quite good- considering there are a zillion bands that aspire to the same sound and genre they manage to straddle the line between a hard rock sound and aa softer 'poppy' sound. Well produced and musically accomplished too.
Ok this was put on but a big Pearl Jam fan who feels there should be more of theirs on the list. I respect that although they aren't one of my favourites. It's functional and represents the genre perfectly.
What the world needs now is more of bands from the South West and specifically from ports near the head of the river and on an estuary. I only wish there were more. I love to wallow in their sound. Unworldly and hypnotic. Special.
Went to YouTube for this. Clever and inventive but not 'music' as such. It's bites of sounds that would go in TikTok videos and TV shows as sound effects. Like a BBC Sound effects album full of tracks like "Glass shattering: 4 secs" That's fun!! Is it indicative of today's society that people would listen to this rather than the originals?
I'm so happy this was added- really iconic sound and yes like many others I remember the guady covers. Lovely sound and something that well deserves to be part of the 1001.
I have to say it's an odd collection of bits and pieces of genres - pop and blues and orchestra with a sort of nautical theme? I like it but would need to play it a lot since there's little by way of hooks.
I was all ready to dismiss this out of hand as a lame American attempt at Punk. Well it's not Punk but it is really good. There's Irish folk/New wave vibes on some tracks. Intelligent lyrics and a great integrity to boot. I mean Greg Graffin went to Cornell University! Plus I like the cover too. This is a good find and thanks to the person who proffered it.
This is really up my street- introspective, fuzzy and odd in places. How have I never heard of them??!! A good find for me and a good call from the person who selected it. I stuck this on and listened to it twice - it just seeps into every pore and puts you in a place.
I like most Electonic and ambient but this is so sterile and devoid of a soul. Maybe I've mis-read the whole project but not for me.
It's ok I guess- not my cup of tea and a bit manufactured. I think if I'd grown up with this it would mean more. It's like a boyband with a pop-punk slant.
Good old Ozzy. I don't really know how much input he had into this album but it's well produced and standard fare for Metal heads.
Quite chill and yes! They do remind my of REM (sorry). I played it a couple of times and it does grow on you- laconic songs.
It's like people are trying to present an album to get the lowest score. This is a LIVE album by a middle of the road band. Not awful just forgettable.
I love Daft Punk but this was a badly mixed and muffled attempt with songs edited for length. Maybe worth watching the video but just the audio did nothing for me.
Quite literally this album has everything going for it and although is really great with flashes of brilliance just doesn't ultimately deliver. I mean Ian McDonald was the multi-instrumentalist who co-wrote 'In the Court of the Crimson King' (one of the greatest albums ever produced). Michael Giles is in my opinion one of the finest drummers and produced one of the greatest performances on the album above, and then there's Peter Sinfield who wrote the lyrics for the aforementioned album. What could possibly go wrong? I've tried several times over the years to discover the hidden depths to this album but always drawn a blank. Still, this remains a fine album.
I can see the link to 'Godspeed You!' and I do like that aspect of this album- the longer tracks are able to weave a tale rather than conform to the traditional 'song' structure. Not too sure of the Metal influences but I can ignore those. I also like the traditional pagan imagery and song titles. A fine album.
This is like a throwback to the 80's only made in 1993. It's just insipid. There's nothing here to ignite any interest.
Very slick and tight arrangement. They are head and shoulders above the hordes of bands in the similar genre. A bit too polished for me but I kind of like the bits in between. You can't deny they are designed to sell records.
Thank you for choosing this someone. How it never made the masterlist is a crime. This is such a delicate and sad beautiful thing. I discovered it a while back (and still can't play 'Fourth of July' without tearing up). There's less instrumentalism on this one- pared back just to Suf' and the guitar at times. It's more like poetry set to music. I'm not suprised many won't like this but that's their loss. I love it.
I like this- quirky and offbeat. Kind of like if Beck was a band.
What a great call to add this- it really is up my street. I have heard this before but never listened to it properly. These guys certainly corned the market in the early 70's.
Ooooooo yeah! I can play this all day and quietly groove along. What a great suggestion and thanks to the person with great taste who proposed it. I just need to pronounce 'Kroooang-bin' properly now......
I have to say they nail the Punk sentiment even for 1991 and are quite impressive in energy, delivery and production. I normally dismiss wannabees but this is a good album worth listening to.
What happened to REM's street cred? Have they become another Coldplay? It's good that this was offered up and there are some great tracks. I guess there were already 3-4 albums of theirs on the main chart but this does deserve to be there.
It's difficult to judge this since I've little liking or knowledge of the genre. There are some interesting tracks that rise above the average 'country' vibe. It's well played and produced and there's nothing to dislike.
One of my absolute faves of all time. Discovered this many years ago- a timeless/timewarp classic. Of course listening is not as good as watching as well but hey, you can't have everything......
Not sure how to compare this in the annals of Jazz fusion but it's really pleasant. I liked it.
I quite liked this! Didn't think I would and normally don't like these things. Chill and varied.
I had high hopes for this but ultimately it seems a bit samey. It's ok, but nothing out of the ordinary.
Very well produced- slick and polished which isn't necessarily a good thing. I can't claim to be an expert but there's echoes of a less manic Rage against the Machine and others in the genre here. It's interesting and articulate.
This sounds like a lot of my favourite late 70's New Wave bands so although they are a revelation to me I grew to like them with each track. These guys were contemporaries to the guys in the UK and US and it's a shame they didn't get the exposure they deserved. It has every trick in the book with the Sax solo thrown in for fun. A great submission to the ranks- thanks to the user who added this.
I really ike his style- musically complex and chill. A mixture of rap, and R&B maybe? It's a shame Spotify doesn't do subtitles but I get the gist.
So influential and full of all kinds of weird stuff.
"the car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel, and the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides and a dark wind blows" Well due to their boycott of Spotify this was all greyed out for me but since I nominated one of their other albums for this list I think you'll know what I think..... I love everything about this album from the bleak cover to the monumental wall of sound. This whole album is a beautiful gem in a sea of detritus.
Was this really back from 1980!? So progressive and raw it's really interesting to listen to.
It's actually ok. Pretty standard fare but credit for playing all the instruments.
I think this is a wind up? Over the last few years across the 1001 and beyond I've listened to many bad albums and given some suprisingly good marks! Throbbing Gristle, The Residents and Einstürzende Neubauten aren't as bad as some make out. This however is really indulgent crap. It's like she was given the best musicians, recording studio and song writing help but chose to squander them on screaming and making animal noises.
Lol, it has a freshness and throwaway feel to the tracks that have an honest feel. I felt myself liking this despite the obvious flaws.
I like Madlib and Freddie is a capable rapper. At an hour long it's certainly value for money too! It's an eclectic mishmash of rips and moods and difficult to keep track of the everchanging flow.
The moment I started this off I had to recheck the year. It's surely from 1984? It's ok but nothing special. The question is what raises it above anything from 1984 or 2017?
Ooooo.....a live album. Not just any band though and of course it's supremely engineered and slick, almost seamless. Interesting the tracks were recorded at different times/places too so not really a representation of an 'event'....... Good value for money at 2.5 hours long and if you love Pink Floyd like me you won't mind the time spent. The newer Gilmour tracks suit his voice and the guitar solos are as good as ever but I can't help but miss Roger's input. The music and support (backing singers etc) are as good as you would expect and the whole thing is well framed but all in all only for people like me.
As I listened to this some tracks were better than others and tunes came and went but the overall impressions washed over me and ingrained themselves in me until I felt a real connection and I guess that's the ultimate purpose of music? It's great these recordings were made and of good quality.
I quite liked this despite myself. It's pretty impressive. I did spot a few tags I thought I recognised but appropriation is the name of the game nowadays it seems. Overall though she's not scared to try different stuff.
Started to groove into this playing it again. As others have noticed there are quirky lyrics and odd offbeat passages but then some rocky sections. I liked it.
I liked the music but get tired by the shouty screaming. Is there like a special school of vocal training you need to attend to sing like that?
After a few misfired albums I welcomed the vibe of this. 2019 but it could be 70s? Nothing special or outstanding but still easygoing listening.
Monday morning blues and I get this nonsense. Was this someone's guilty 80's pleasure? Or a joke.....
One of the seminal Post-Rock albums and one of my favourites. It's hard to imagine what people thought when it came out in 1988. Anyway, put this on, sit back and relax- it's perfect. (BTW: if you hate this you'll love their last album 'Laughing Stock')
I appreciate the music but think this is more of a compilation of aged Blues Legends accompanied by some bloke I've not heard about than aything else. Why not have an album by one of the greats in their prime?
This was a pleasant suprise- a folk rock ballad from over the pond! This needs listening to properly and not randomly before going to work. It's grim stuff to be sure. I was shocked. I applaud the intent and need to get into this deeper.....
I vaguely recall hearing/reading about this band. They are pretty good and really engaged me- singing about quirky British things. The music is also quite varied and unusual- different sounds meaning this could be a band I listen to again.
It started off ok- catchy pop rock but after a bit it grates. There are a million bands like this from the 80's and 90s with pretty lead singers.
The 2nd Blink album post 1001. The last one I gave a 3/5 and this is the same vibe for me. It's functional pop-punk and in 2003 was kinda on the knuckle but now there's been a million imitators.
Woah, this is good. I'd 'favourited' it in Spotify at some point but it must have fallen down the cracks and been forgotten. This really hit me this morning, and that was before I read Wikipedia.
There's an initial thrill listening to this but soon it becomes apparent a lot of the tracks are noodling fillers- more experimental electronic than Disco. Still, there are a couple of great tracks ('H Friend' and No regrets.)
