A terribly under appreciated band, X-Ray Spex deserve much more than their usual odd mention on Punk Documentaries. Poly Styrene should be a poster girl for everyone, a true icon who makes you realise how insane this world is. When you see girls today saying that the likes of walking talking Daily Star advert Rihanna are their idols it makes you wonder what the fuck is going on. Poly strikes a blow here for intelligent females all over the world.

This album starts very strong and finishes strong but the middle stretch is what really lets it down. Every song from "Nowhere Man" to "Girl" blends into the other and I find it impossible to give a crap about any one of them. Just so it doesn't sound overly negative, I do actually quite like this album. That stretch is a letdown but it's still very nice, just not up to anywhere near the same standard as the others. When I first set this one going it was before I went out on a long walk and I remember exactly where I was when I realised that, hey, that Johnny Cash song was a cover of a Beatles song! And the original "In My Life" is much better. The folky interlude bit in the middle is beautiful, incredibly so. "I'm Looking Through You" is great fun, and Norwegian Wood is the best song on here. I was about to write that it's one of Harrison's best compositions except for the fact that he didn't write it, which does somewhat disqualify it. In my defense, sitar. But in the end the long middle stretch of comparative blandness kind of scuppers this one for me. Perfectly inoffensive but it's probably worth taking the best songs off it, sticking them on a playlist and sticking to Revolver.
