We're Only In It For The Money
The Mothers Of InventionFeels like someone just discovered sound fx, or a racoon got loose in the recording studio.

"Gotta Get Away" reminds me of Nirvana with the wailing chorus But it's like a more upbeat Offspringed version and harmonies Loved It'll Be a Long Time - different Offspring Killboy Powerhead is a bit more punky, can imagine playing THPS to it Enjoy what happned to you, it's a bit more ska-punk which I didn't know Offspring could do! A mix of different rock styles Generally 7/10, good punk album. 45 minutes is also an old school album length
4 tracks in, epic riffs from Crosstown Traffic followed by epic guitar solos Can hear how this influenced bands much later eg kula shaker Psychedelic dream
Love how (super)massive every song feels. It's classic Muse, perfectly put together, just as they were in concert. Strings also add extra layer of epic
First song is discordant, rambling, screamy Then a rant about religion Then a discordant song with the same rant The only song that is any different from the rest of the album had horrendously annoying Cockney voices speaking and screeching over the top
I find the lyrics a bit cringe and the singer's voice annoying. It's fine when singing a melody but when shouting it grates a bit Really repetitive lyrics Although I love the backing music, it give me Hives vs Blondie vibes 60s throwbacks, love the tempo. My my metrocard is a good track Love the variety of music. It feels quite fun and poppy, lots of gimmicks that aren't terrible 3 or 4, can't decide This one never made it to the UK, I can kind of see why
This album is long, far too long with little payoff. The pace of the majority of songs can only be described as glacial and they are so similar that when my Spotify cut out part way through I couldn't pick out the song I had just been listening to to restart. The title track is a gem and languishes at the end. Pity really as many may fall asleep before that. The other memorable songs aren't actually that good, they just have a bpm of over 40 so stick out. Also some of the quicker songs had flavours of country music, not for me. I know Fleetwood Mac are revered but as someone new to them, based on this I really don't see why. Maybe I need to hear Rumours. +1 for title track. 2/5
Absolute belter of an album that took me straight back to the mid-2000s. The beat is somewhere between disco and rock that lends itself well to shouting along in a room full of partygoers. The lyrics are excellent and many songs refer to common, everyday experiences from the time, such as the anticipation of a night out, drunk texting your crush, or struggling to get a taxi home from the rank. Had so much fun I listened to it twice.
It was a great album and classic Chilis but was too long
Good to stick on in the background Quite long. 3.5
Boring and whiny. A couple of good tracks which saves it from a 1
Enjoyed the music, it's different and is of my time so there was some nostalgia. All of the songs sound samey and familiar, but none are actually the song you know . It's nice to chill to.
3. The content of the songs hasn't aged well. To a point where I'm shocked I was allowed to listen to it as a young teenager when it came out. The beats are good and Eminem is obviously very talented at crafting intricate and inventive pieces. Understanding his backstory and the contrast with the MMLP helps but I find it hard with highly rating an album that glorifies such violence against women
Couple of good songs in the middle, but it was otherwise very samey and dull
Lots of crooning
Revolution 9 pulls this album down to a 4, as does the length
Decent album. Politics aside, and looking at this only musically, it surprised me as I expected more demure music. The opening couple of tracks were surprisingly upbeat!
Loved how this is a mix of reggae, punk, and a hint of jazz. Great album that I enjoyed more than I thought I would.
Loved the big band and swing side of this! It's the kind of jazz I prefer
I can only guess that this album is on the list to put all the other albums into perspective. There's no other explanation, because this is barely music.
It was really surprising! The mix of styles, all done really well. The Clash is so much more than the title track. It'll definitely go on the longer rotation
It's wonderfully weird. Even if electro synth pop isn't your bag, it's a wild ride and they know how to write a catchy song. Also good to have an artist from Leeds on the list 🙌
Would be good meditation music. Took the advice of reviews and listened to the Youtube version
What a great party! The lyrics made me smile. So much energy. I wonder if my grandparents listened to him, I could picture them at a dance jiving away
Started off badly, the first song is discordant and a lot of noise. After 3-4 songs it got better, for a while, then dipped again. I'd describe it as erratic. The mix of sound is epic but I prefer songs with more structure. It felt like a ramble rather than coherent songs. Ambulance is a bit dull again because of the rambly, unstructured nature of it. I can deal with the acapella but it was repetitive. Staring at the Sun is the only song with real development, although it was still droney Was prepared to give it a 3 since it's just not my jam, but then You Could Be Loved split my eardrums. The song is a powerful idea but the vocal is awful. Are people impersonating sheep at the end?
Not my jam
Good for a dinner party
Unstructured, random noises for so much of it. I'm not a jazz person and the jazzy stuff is actually the better part of this record. I don't want 18 minute songs.
Different but quute repetitive. Not in a rush to hear it again.
Great album, great band. Had heard of them but never heard them. Will be coming back to this one for sure.
All very samey. Lovely voice and bass though. I was intrigued by the chords and did some looking into it, then went round for one more go.
Background music, felt like a film soundtrack
This is peak Chilis. Mellow yet funky, outrageous bass from start to finish, some absolute bangers on here. It has a bit of filler which would take it down to a 4.5 but it's balanced out by just how good some of the other songs are.
Lots of great sound here and love the energy, but it's let down by its weird pretentiousness at times. Don't need to have several minutes of noise and feedback at the end of a song, this was true of many tracks. My friend Goo is just really cringe.
Great, snappy songs. Will be revisiting.
The more upbeat, swingy bits made up for the wailing crooning.
Lovely voice, this was just a bit too samey and dull. The comparatively more upbeat songs pulled it to a 3. It has a time and place but I'm not going to revisit.
Never seen a more appropriate album cover. This was just bland nothingness.
Some of the songs were incredible (Chapel Hill, Purr) Others had painful whining/wailing voice or really basic lyrical structure that were so borderline cheesy they reminded me of primary school poems. A way better album than Goo, but Sonic Youth just seem to have a mixed bag of tastes/sounds and only half of them are good.
Run to the Hills might be one of the best songs ever.
Liked the reggae-inspired bits but it fizzled out into bland meh. Don't enjoy songs where the lyrics consist of saying the same line over and over
Feels like someone just discovered sound fx, or a racoon got loose in the recording studio.
As Radiohead albums go, this was a better one for me. But Thom Yorke's whiney voice just isn't for me.
Accidentally lost my place on the album and couldn't work out which song was playing. They are all the same
I'm kinda here for this! Bit of a surprise but it's so different! Great background music
Loved the music and the harmonies, did not love the attitude toward women.
