I have this weird vivid memory of me at age 7 or so proclaiming, "I like rock, I just don't like acid rock." I'm thinking it was directed to my older brother who had music like this in his collection. Well, although the term "acid rock" hasn't really been in my consciousness since 1978, some things never change. "Summertime Blues": Okay, this is a valid, hard rock take on the classic, but makes me miss the original. "Rock me Baby": We're getting into a bluesy groove that I get. B. B. King song! Maybe I'll kind of like the rest of this album okay. "Doctor Please" is the first original song of the band. Not enjoying. Is it almost done? Oh, no, it's eight minutes long. Hmm, I'm kind of tired of the guitar and the screaming, and the drummer is certainly drumming. Those are interesting guitar noises. Please end. Please end. Oh, thank God. Maybe the next song is better. "Out of Focus." Holy shit, it sounds exactly the same as the last song. Is it even a different song? "Parchment Farm": Good, this one at least sounds different. Picking cotton? Hmm. "Second Time Around": I feel like Dickie's throat must be pretty sore by now and could use some lemon tea. Oh, wait! The guitars stopped for the first time. Oh, this is a drum solo! Is it done now? No, bass fading back in. Now lots of wailing guitar sounds again! Six minutes going. Aaaaaand it's done. Phew.

I can hear their influence on The River Bottom Nightmare Band. I was kind of ok with it until Parchment Farm which is...problematic on a couple of fronts. There are better albums to listen to for this kind of psychedelic rock sound. I doubt I'll listen to this again.

Who new that I was born in the same year as heavy metal. The least I can do is check out its origins… Good to have listened to this from a historical perspective. I have heard Summertime Blues before. Didn’t hate the listen but not really in my wheelhouse.

Never heard of this band but I enjoyed the album. It's a great specimen of proto-metal with those buzz guitars and garage-style production! The opening cover is of Summertime Blues is awesome!

The riffs come about slowly, dreadful and hyper-distorted, built around depraved melodies. One of the Bands that really starts playing Heavy Metal. (7/10) Favourite Tracks: Doctor Please, Summertime Blues, Out of Focus

Bad stoner rock!

Apparently the first metal album? I liked it, though its not quite my jam.

I respect the innovation for that time and their influence, but from 2021 eyes, it’s not a great album. Plus they ruined 2 songs I love a lot.

While they might have been one of the first ones to play a heavy metal-esque sound, they didn't really do it well

Vincebus Eruptum is a slacker of an album in the lead up to Led Zeppelin's debut one year later. Zeppelin of course was a super group that was assembled with a plan in mind while these guys seemed to be smoking out of the same bong at a party and decided to make some music. The majority of this is loud repetitive trash guitar noise but finding the second track, "Rock Me Baby" was worth listening to the balance of the album.

The cover of "Vincebus Eruptum" couldn't be more late-60s psychedelic rock if it tried. While I had never heard of Blue Cheer, I knew before hitting play what was coming. The album was apparently successful at the time, but seems to have been mostly lost in the annals of classic rock history. It's nice to see more of the musical depth of the late 60s than what we've gleamed from classic rock radio, but I think I can see why Blue Cheer hasn't made as much of a lasting impact. They take psychedelic rock to a bit of a heavier place, with a little less focus and tightness that made the genre work in spite of its drug-induced, free-wheelin' inspirations.

Who knew the origins of heavy metal would be so accessible? I mostly liked the sound on this album and could totally see it as the stepping stone to the harder rock to come. Some of the wankery (esp. on the last track) went a bit far for me, but I generally appreciated their musicianship, their lyrics and the power of their songs.

Could have been good with a little self-control.

I like the sound here: bluesy and distorted. However, waaaay too much jamming.

Loved the album as a whole. Exactly what it needed to be. Second half of the last track was a little much for me but still giving it a 5.

It's a very nice surprise to discover these pre-heavy metal bands that I did not know about before. An excellent album.

Psychedelic blues rock. Probably a fun band to see live, but this album didn't really do much for me. It did make me a little curious about this band though. They have some good stuff, just not much on this album in my opinion.

I personally hate the summertime blues song because I was forced to sing it over and over in elementary school. Other than that this band kind of rules. I had never heard of them but apparently they kind of started heavy metal. I probably won’t listen to this album much but I respect it. Talented musicians and all that. The drum solo and bass line in Second Time Around are fun.

Another album that stands out because of when it happened more than what it's doing. However, if you released this today and said it was a Jack White side project, no one would doubt you.

Heavier (for the time) hard rock. As a general fan of metal I'm not quite as in to proto-metal / blues-inspired stuff. Black Sabbath put out stuff shortly after that's more my style of metal.

Want dat heb ik nog wel nodig voor m'n zelf verzamelde muziek. Plus misschien 1 x per week iets nieuws. Een beetje pelan-pelan. Karpendonkse Plas, 2012-02-04. De winter dwong het water tot ijs. En Betty er op de schaats, 14 rondjes. Ikzelf had daar aan 1 rondje glibberen op Slayer's Abyss meer dan genoeg aan. Ja, liever die, dan de Blue Cheer nog maar eens luisteren. Hmm, ach, toch maar World Painted Blood.

Electrifying combo of blues, hard rock, and rip-roaring riffs and guitar solos. There's some ultra impressive drum work on here too, which I wasn't expecting.

Tantôt Jimi Hendrix, tantôt Gun N Roses, mais surtout pleinement nul à chier.

Vincebus Eruptum feels like a bit of novelty, but also a signpost of things to come. The band slogs through the six tracks with a novel and sustained guitar tone that sounds like a precursor to heavier genres to come. Despite this revelation on guitar, the rest of the music feels average to downright boring, and the lyrics are so basic, it feels like they were written 5 minutes before the producer hit record. Fav Tracks: Out of Focus

Feels like a "missing link" sort of album branching between psychadellic/hard rock/blues rock and proto-metal. There's passion and urgency to the performances, but the songwriting is a little too predictable and jammy for my taste. Worth a listen, but maybe not too many more. Favourite track: Doctor Please

Felt like it dragged on, even for such a short album. Typically a fan of heavy metal but didn't really enjoy this, only redeemable song was Out of Focus.

HARD. I can imagine reviews from 68 using words like explosive, muscular, unrelenting. The lead guitar tone is perfect 60s psych. I want whatever pedals this guy's using. And his musical abilities. They're borrowing a lot from Hendrix's vibe and then taking it even further and heavier. Each song feels like the intro to Foxy Lady but extended out and even sloppier. So good. Here's the inevitable part where I go negative - the singer is rough stuff. Janis Joplin's uncle that talks too much. No subtlty, no dynamics, just pterodactyl yelling over every incredible jam. I would put down big stars if this thing was instrumental. B+

This is nice and heavy like Psychadelic proto-Fuzz. Definitely ahead of its time—you see the bridge from Cream to Black Sabbath. The drummer sounds does a great Ginger Baker impression. It’s Jammy, heavily distorted and short. Sometimes the jamminess comes off as repetitive and a little rough/unrehearsed. Pretty good. Would buy on Vinyl. B. 3.

I've always enjoyed this album, but generally find myself wanting MORE out of it. In some ways this is the album that birthed heavy metal, but it certainly doesn't sound like it as much as Black Sabbath just a few years later. You can hear the influence Blue Cheer had on Black Sabbath, so maybe Blue Cheer's role is as a foil to Sabbath. Blue Cheer asked "what is heavy metal and is this it?", and Ozzy replied by biting the head off a bat.

I can hear how this would have blown peoples mind in the 60s, a little tamer now.

Esta muy todo muy por sin ningún lado, aunque me imagino que es parte de la idea.

Not for me ... at the time I could see it as breaking new ground, maybe. From the current paradigm, it feels derivative of all influences that are contributing to the sound, its a half-formed thought of what music should be. I imagine I hate people that point to this album as life changing.

Mercifully it is only 32 minute long. I loathe this music. Psychedelic fuzz-box trashy blues with dumb lyrics and regularly finds ways to travel up its own butt with unlistenable noodling solos.

Makes me think of drinking in Murph's dads garage. Great background music for that atmosphere. Not mad at it.

musically this album was great but the singing and lyrics felt inconsistent, loud and very similar. solid psych punk rock. enjoyable.

Fun blues covers, not as heavy as I had hoped, but an interesting listen nonetheless. I had high hopes since this is considered proto-metal and <strike>paved the road</strike> walked the footpath of one of my favorite genres. It's nice to get a glimpse of where it all started.

7/10. this album is pretty heavy n stuff but it doesnt totally click with me. i think just because of the audio quality? idk if its just the mono mix that i got but it sounds even fuzzier and harder to make out than a lot of 60s stuff already does. plus the songs themselves arent amazing imo, tend to go on for a while. by a bit before halfway thru it just felt like a ton of fuzzy psychedelic noise goin in one ear and out the other. might just be bc i have trouble focusing on stuff though.

Not terribly unique, but could be more influential from its time

I'd heard of Blue Cheer but never heard them... can see why people say they beat Black Sabbath to making the first heavy metal album, but while they might have a similar sound to early sabbath they sure as shit don't have the songwriting. The first two songs are covers and the rest seems to be kinda droney, sludgey jam tracks - a 32min album that felt like it dragged on. My guess is they're all one-take jobbies, probably recorded live. Pretty much everything after the cover songs felt like a "big ending" that just kept going and going. 2/5.
