Absolutely hate the continually forced vibrato vocals which makes the whole thing a chore to listen to. Musically it's very one dimensional too.

This has no redeeming features. One paced, crap lyrics, average vocals. Would get a pleasant polite applause at a Monday night open mic session down the pub.

Really frustrating album for me. Some absolutely brilliant tracks... but overly long with some bog average ones and lazy lyrics... Generally far far too much autotune and vocal production which strips some of the emotion that he's conveying.
Steely Dan

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
2/5
I enjoy the chaotic aspect of it all, and is quite a fun album, but they obviously made an informed decision to make it sound like it was recorded in a toilet in 1975. The lack of bass really reduces any impact it could have too and leaves it hard it listen to. Perhaps a slightly harsh 2* but I won't be listening to it again
Snoop Dogg

Lovely album, great surprise
PJ Harvey
3/5
I get what this album is trying to be... But Harvey rarely steps up to the early 90's alternative mark that is obviously being aimed for. Albini was obviously also allowed free reign to do whatever the fuck he wanted as there's a wide variation in production quality that he was guilty of in those days.
Shame as the talent was there to really make a great record of this type. More tracks of the quality of Me Jane were needed
The Youngbloods
2/5
Great musicians but the songs themselves fail to land for me.

In summary... I don't get it... seems like basic bog standard dnb, but with the added negative of being even more repetitive and long winded than normal. Prob just not my genre in its full form tbf, preferring just short incursions into the style.

Yeah the covers bring something new to the songs... if new is not wanting to hear those songs in this format ever again
Nick Drake
3/5
Decent, love the backing band, but suffers from being one dimension... Basically it's one big depressive song

This is the 3rd mbv album we've had, the 1st two did nothing for me, v but this is the seminal one so had high hopes. In conclusion, they are overrated imho. This is an okay album, but feels like it's a shoegaze album for people who don't listen to shoegaze to be able to say they listen to shoegaze 😂 basic throughout

After 4 or 5 songs I was surprised that I was considering giving it a 4* as it was really enjoyable... But then it suffered from the usual house issue of being repetitive and one paced so got a bit bored

It's by no means ground breaking, but a really enjoyable listen with a rockier edge than it's very obvious influences
Emmylou Harris
2/5
Really have no idea why this is in the list. Seems like the only remarkable thing about it is that she actually manages to write her own unremarkable songs after 20 odd albums of covers :/
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
Thought this was brilliant, a double album concept that actually worked really well.
Doves

I don't think it's possible to find an album that sounds more 80's than this... Which is impressive considering how early in the decade it was.
I imagine the conversation with the producer went something like this...
How much Moog are you gonna add on the album Steve?
Steve: Yes
