Reviews (page 14 of 14)

Very decent!

Man, I just don't like REM. Never have. Moral Kiosk is fun. 9-9 is enjoyable. A lot of the songs sound the same to me. I think I hate Michael Stipe. He reminds me of a weird elementary school art teacher. His voice comes off as condescending. I would give this a 1, but I don't want Stipe to give me detention.

This debut album is pleasant enough. Good early indie music with a nice vibe that foreshadows even better things to come from this band. However it gets repetitive very soon.

Not bad, but some songs lost my interest. 2 stars only as I have high hopes for the other albums on the list.

So iconically college music that it sounds like satire

Everything sounded like a 90s sitcom theme and I couldn't tell where one song ended and another began. Also, lyrics were incomprehensible.

worth to relisten

Mi primer disco de R.E.M.

Grand, I'm sure they have better albums

Everything I love! Melodies, harmonies, dance foot tapping drumming, and cool guitar sounds. Something about them is so alternative yet exactly traditional old school rock n roll. And in 1980 too! True pioneers for the 90s.

Right out of the gate this album is more fun and more well-crafted than yesterday's. It's worth noting since both are debut albums! REM has already solidified much about what makes their sound unique by the time they got into the studio the first time. I dig R.E.M.'s vibe at all times. Even though none of the songs on this album became hits, it's still nice to listen to. This probably doesn't deserve a 4, but I've got to give it higher than Teenage Fanclub.

Bueno.

It's fine.

I didn't hate this album when I started. But I grew to hate how fucking boring it was. I give it a 2 as opposed to a 1 because the repetition on the last three tracks was nice to cook to.

Langweilige Radio Musik... Catapult ist aber schon catchy und vibey. Aber sonst ist das alles ehr Mittel. Ich will irgendwie 2* geben, weil Ihr so gemein zu the Verve gewesen seid. --> 2*

1* hab alles geskippt.

Boring AF, every song sounded the same. Outrageous I needed to listen to this before I die. Less REM ffs

Really good, I enjoyed it a lot.

Cool rock, nice range of musical style 3.5

Groundbreaking - on many lists of greatest albums of all time for good reason

Not a fan of the singer, but some nice jazzy moments

Great album! Very nice rhythms. Good for vibing

Great debut album, although the sound is a bit muddled. I prefer some of their crisper-sounding albums from their middle years, like Green and Automatic for the People, but this is still great. 4 stars.

I thought it was only okay. I'm a sort of fan of REM but hadn't really listened to this album, preferring their rare high-energy efforts. There were a few songs I enjoyed but the album soon descends into the kind of mellow rock that I enjoy less.

Jingle jangle city, but it all goes down smooth.

Enjoyed this more than I thought. A lot of the songs sound kind of the same and not all of them were super interesting, but there were some good ones and I appreciated the generally upbeat songs.

This was difficult to listen to critically because it kept leaking into the background. It definitely belongs on the list. I've heard far too much alt rock and too much of the poppy REM songs to see this for the first time, but it must have been magical. Now it's good.

not what they're known for

Another perfectly pleasant album

Good album. Acted more as background noise for me than anything, though. Some songs stood out and made me take notice but it feels like a rainy day album, which worked for me today.

Was Alright, Kind of Boring

Better than I thought it would be and not what I expected from this band, but still the same kind of bullshit

Average REM album

Laughing has great opening bass line, but gets rather repetitive with lyrics near the end. Sitting Still probably the weakest from the album. Early REM is decent and clearly shows its roots for what it will be, but I do think this is weaker than some of their albums to come.

They knew what they needed to sound like.

REM is one of those bands that figured very prominently in my daily playlists for many years (starting with an LP of Life's Rich Pageant owned by my brother, a situation that will no doubt become a common refrain in this project). And then I just stopped picking up the new stuff and really stopped listening to them at all.

Not my favourite R.E.M. album but still quite enjoyable. Vocals are sometimes more mumbly than I'd like them to be but otherwise the sound is nice. 2nd listen was better than the 1st. Highlights: Moral Kiosk, Perfect Circle and Sitting Still.

Depending on who you ask, this is REM’s best album. A debut that contends with some of the best debuts ever. I really enjoy this album. Hooky basslines, jangly guitars and weird lyrics that burst into catchy sing a long choruses. This album laid the groundwork for what was to come later in the 80s underground music scene and how big REM was about to become with albums like Document and Automatic for the People. Favorite song: Radio Free Europe Least favorite song: Shaking Through

Alright! 4/5

Best R.E.M. sample, displaying their style at their best. Nice listen.

Great college-years REM.

I enjoyed this album

clæssic

A great display of music setting R.E.M. up for their next work however I found it a little lacking in depth.

Boring! This had a grand total of ZERO bangers upon it. Only got two stars because Michael Stipe does has a good voice none the less.

It’s ok. Not a big fan

Forgettable - what was the point of listening to that.

Not for my tastes exactly but it's good

I like REM but this wasn't my favourite of theirs.

Very good album. I never have really listened to R.E.M. aside from their popular songs, and this album had a completely different sound than I was expecting.

Didn't really know any of the songs on this album and nothing really stuck out. Classic REM sound. probably could be better albums for this list.

Kinda put this one on in the background. Definitely REM but before they were a super big deal so some of the songs sound a little different, not so monotonous as their later output

Meh. Not my favorite. Not a huge R.E.M. fan to begin with. They definitely have a few songs I really like, but this album didn't have the feel of those.

Interesting to hear REM before the 90s. Much more accessible.

decent . will listen again , but not intentionally

Not my first time hearing this - I love this album. They really started off with a bang - so catchy, yet infused with that unique sound that is unlike any other music out there. 5 stars.

Not bad, but not something that would compel me to listen again. If one of those tunes came on the radio, I wouldn't be compelled to change the station, but I wouldn't be compelled to listen through either. Not a lot of compulsion here. 2 stars.

Radio Free Europe: The mix is sorta weird in a way in which I can't really pay attention to the lyrics because of everything else that's going on even though they are audible. I really like how the bass is audible, it really adds a lot to the song. It sorta reminds me of going along on a train almost. Overall, the song was kinda just background music, I couldn't really pay attention to it or it didn't really hold it as long as I thought it would. 6.5/10 Pilgrimage: This song is already a lot more interesting to me. The guitar work in this song is pretty good, as well as the drum work. This song sorta gives off a vibe of being in a cave I guess? I can't really put my finger on it, but I like it. I think the repetition of the lyrics really works with this one just because of the different interesting elements in the song. 8/10 Laughing: This is a very indie sounding song, and I am honestly not very interested by it. It's just sort of boring in a way, there's not really anything interesting going on, or anything that's really standing out. The vocals are especially weird in this one, it just sound whiny almost in this one, the vocalist sounds like he's mumbling throughout the song, like he wasn't really interested in singing the song. 5/10 Talk About The Passion: This is another boring song where the singer sounds very uninterested (which I'm starting to think that's just his style which I don't really like). This one is a little bit better though, I dig the guitar quite a bit more than in Laughing. There's not really much to say about this one other than I liked it slightly more than Laughing. 6/10 Moral Kiosk: This song bops, I'm digging it quite a bit. The guitar is very cool in this one, as well as the drums that have perfectly timed fills which I appreciate. I think the lead singer's voice fits this song a lot more than the other songs, I can't quite figure out why, but it does. 7.5/10 Perfect Circle: This one already stands out a lot more than the previous songs on the album because of the honky-tonk-like piano which I enjoy. The mixing on the drums is really weird in this song, the hi-hat is in my right ear and it is really stange to me and it's almost distracting. I really like the bass in this song as well, it's played very well and it works with the song very well. As with all the songs on the album, the chorus is just repeating the same thing, which is getting very boring. 7.5/10 Catapult: This is another one of the boring songs with mumbley lyrics. This one feels incredibly uninspired as well, maybe even more than Laughing. I really don't have anything for this song. I suppose the guitar is pretty good. 5/10 Sitting Still: This one mixes it up a little by not having the chorus be a repetition of the same word over and over, which I like. 7/10 9-9: This one is already interesting at the start with the crazy guitar riff and the talking in the right channel. This one feels like it has more energy in it than the other songs by a lot. It's definitely an enjoyable song, and it has a lot of character to it, the lead singer makes it sound like every other song on the album though, which is kind of annoying. This one is probably my favorite so far though. 8.5/10 Shaking Through: This song is, once again, just okay. It pretty much just sounds like every other song on the album. Once again, this song really doesn't have much to talk about. The song has a very interesting ending, with the choice of fading out, and then going back in. 6.5/10 We Walk: This song has a bit of a jumpy feel to it, which I think is pretty cool, and sounds good with the lead singer's voice. This is definitely the most creative song on the album, so far. This song makes me feel like I'm walking through a forest with a dog. I like it. 8.5/10 West Of The Fields: This is another one of those boring songs, which is really disappointing for the closing track on the album. It just sounds like all the other songs that are like this on the album. 6/10 CONCLUSION This is a very underwhelming album. Most of the songs on the album sound basically the same, with the monotone, bored, tired sounding vocalist. The mix on all the songs are basically the same too, which drown out the vocals anyway because of how much reverb was put on the vocals. The guitars are boring, which are just arpeggiating chords, pretty much. And the writing to all the songs sounds like they were all written by the same person on the same day because of the repeating chorus and the references to random philosophers and Greek locations which just make it sound like they were trying to be quirky. Overall, this album was uninspired and I didn't enjoy it much. Favorite Song: We Walk Least Favorite: Laughing Overall Rating: 6/10

Music was well done, but not my thing.

Boring. Voice miserable

Great Album, really like the voice and the composition. Although not a masterpiece, it's definitely a very good 4

Good album from a good group but they have better songs and albums

Interesting instrumental and a pleasant voice

Kivaa rokkia

I just don't give a shit about REM.

doesnt have any of their hits, still great

Good album. Forgot how much I like R.E.M. However, docking it one star for not really being my genre of music.

seeing REM live was like seeing an animatronic band live with how scripted it was.

Surprised R.E.M. has more than one on the list and this not being my second choice I may be very surprised they have 3 on here

really excellent

really good!

This is some dad rock. But good.

I didn't know that post-punk became alternative rock but now I do.

Closer to a 3.5

THA'S NEE BONKMACHINE. THA'S A FENCE. <BR>

En fantastisk debut!
