the cheeriest album ever made by a convicted murderer
This album makes me feel like I'm the US president, and Im about to announce to the world that Im going to run for reelection despite my recent medical scandal, and the ghost of my secretary is encouraging me along the way.
I listened to this album A LOT as a kid (even though I was born after the 90s), and I thought it would be another example of an album that hasnt aged well since my childhood. But honestly, this album is fantastic. Despite being a double album (and a double CD, so its very long), the song quality is very consistent throughout, and I cant really pick out any songs that are bad or disposable. Its incredibly ambitous, and has a good variety of music, with a lot of dark grungy songs, but also some very beautiful ones. Giving it 5 stars but I have a couple of gripes: it dosent flow too well (particurley in the second CD), and a lot of the lyrics are trying too hard to be dark/ dramatic.
One of the greatest albums ever made. Forget the lyrics and concept for a second, just the music alone is incredible. I love how you can hear each individual instrument coming together, but they become something greater than the some of their parts. \"They Are Night Zombies (...)\" is the perfect example of this. And the concept is super creative, and is explored in an amazing way. Absolutely flawless album, easily a top 5 album of all time for me.
What can be said about this album that hasnt already been said? Its absolutley incredible. Im not a jazz expert, and have only listened to about 4 dozen jazz albums, so I dont understand the music theory of it all, I just know that its an incredible experience to listen to this.
Closer to a 3.5. Very energetic, which I appreciate. Take my rating with a grain of salt, as half the album is missing from spotify
Just not really my cup of tea.
I didnt expect to enjoy this at all, but honestly it surprised me. Its incredibly energetic, and unlike on other metal albums that Ive listened to (and hardcore punk), the speed didnt bother me as much on this one.
I can honestly say I have never heard anything like this. Such a unique and creative album, and the eclectic mix of styles actually works pretty well.
Closer to a 4.5, but a 5 is deserved
Interesting album. Strong atmosphere
Can go toe to toe with anything Ambient that Brian Eno ever did. incredibly powerful mood.
I dont think ill come back to it, but it was better than I expected, considering im not a fan of country.
Better than I expected. Based on the cover, I thought it would be a kind of folk-punky affair, but it has some really interesting songs. On the higher side of 4.
Complete shift from what he was doing with PIL, but still a great album. A melting pot of different musical cultures, but surprisingly unified. Closer to a 3.7
Good, but not really my cup of tea. Dont think ill come back to it. Family Affair is pretty great though
Didnt really dig it very much. While the music is fairly beautiful, it feels very surface level in a way.
Really surprised me. Was expecting cheesy 80s pop, but has a sort of smiths like quality.
Fun album reminiscent of New Order that gets kind of borring and repetitive later on.
Very interesting. I like the sparsness, its an element I havent seen a lot in New Wave type music.
Closer to a 3.5 than a 4 or a 3, but im giving 3 stars
closer to a 4.5
Closer to a 2.7
Very odd, might come back to it
Closer to a 3.7
Could not finish it, which makes it an automatic 1 in my book. Its not irredeemable, which I guess places it on the higher side of 1, but its still a 1 for me. DJ Shadows Endtroducing has a similiar vibe, but is easily 20x better.
Closer to 3.5-3.7
Better than I expected. Good mix of hard hitting songs and calmer relaxed songs.
closer to a 3.5
closer to a 4.5
Has some interesting moments, but I found it kind of repetitive overall. Ill come back to it though.
closer to a 3.5
I can see why its in the book, but I dont think country music is really my cup of tea. Overall, I found it pretty borring and repetitive.
I like the unique production and the fact that its different, although its a bit too long. Still, Bob can make some good music even past his golden age and silver age.
Pretty great. I didnt really like other cuban inspired albums (buena vista social club), but I found this one a lot more interesting.
closer to a 2.7 maybe? I enjoyed parts of it
I enjoyed it more than I expected. Probably closer to a 3.5/ 3.7ish.
Very good. Powerful lyrics, great punk aesthetics, love the basslines.
Pretty damn good
Not a huge fan of the title track, and I prefer plastic ono band, but still a pretty good album. Closer to a 3.5
Closer to a 3.5. Can be a little basic sometimes, but plenty of super enjoyable pop songs. Reminds me a bit of early Steeley Dan
Dont love it, but pretty good. Welcome to the Occupation is fantastic. Closer to a 3.5
Closer to a 3.5. Some very cool samples and a lot of agressive energy.
the cheeriest album ever made by a convicted murderer
Fairly unique, might come back to it
Pretty strong debut, but Bryter Layter and Pink Moon are better. Closer to a 3.5
Very beautiful, heartbreaking songs, side by side with energetic, fun songs. Closer to a 4.5 (jamaica jerk-off kinda sucks though)
Really surprised me actually
Hits hard and has some good moments.
closer to a 3.7, 3.5 ish
I really cant find faults in this. Several incredible, emotional, hearfelt songs.
I like the increased diversity in the style of the songs on the album. A lot of energetic badass songs, but there is also a lot of subtly in the songs. Closer to a 4.5
Closer to a 3.7
Very beautiful and interesting music, which was very clearly a big influence on a lot of artists. Closer to a 3.5
When Doves Cry is pretty fantastic, but overall this is an album where I really dont see the hype. Seems like nothing really that special to me. Not a bad album, but not something that I really plan to come back to.
closer to a 3.5
Pretty much what I expected from Bob Marley, which is to say, pretty chill music thats fun to listen to.
Closer to a 2.5. Some songs were pretty good, and its definitley not borring, but it seems like a generally worse version of Slanted and Enchanted (which Im already not a huge fan of).
Closer to a 4.5, but I'm giving it 5 stars
Not really my cup of tea, but I didnt hate it at all. I guess im just not really that into Metal (other than early Black Sabbath).
Very good, closer to 4.3ish.
I enjoyed it, although I dont think ill come back to it. Ill still save it in my library though
Pretty avant garde and difficult, but surprisngly catchy.
Even though Bowie is kinda overrepresented on this list, all his albums here are fantastic, and this one is no different.
Better than rumors, and probably the most consistent double album ive heard (rumors has better highs though)
closer to 3.5
Very unique and interesting, absolutley not what I was expeting. Dont exactly know where I stand on it yet, ill have to come back to it.
Pretty damn good Jazz album. Sounds ahead of its time
Got kicked out of the guitar store
Many classics here, Black and Jeremy are 2 of the best songs of the 90s. It lulls a bit towards the end, but thats not necessarily a bad thing given its explosive middle.
Strong ambience and very lush instrumentation. Very well made, and has excellent songs. I found it a bit inconsistent though.
Pretty good, Closer to a 3.5
Very interesting album, not what I expeected from Nick Cave (or the album cover). Has a very powerful mood.
Very nice folk rock album. Closer to a 3.5
Perfectly fine and pretty, but I don't think id really come back to it
Very good album. Very 80s, but in a good way. Not all the songs hit, but the ones that do hit hard. Reminds me a bit of New Order.
Hardcore just isnt my cup of tea, but I appreciate the historical importance of the album
Very interesting album with a nice spacey vibe. More electronic than I was expecting. closer to a 4.3 maybe?
Closer to a 3.5
Had 0 expectations going in, and it turned out to be really cool and intersting. Also, one of the songs is used brilliantly in Breaking Bad, so thats something.
Perfectly enjoyalbe, but kinda borring at times (maybe im just not a big Rolling Stones guy, although I did like it). I think its a rare case where an album gets better the deeper it goes, and the last few songs were really strong. Probably closer to a 3.3 or 3.5.
Really great energy, I can totally see how Talking Heads were inspired.
Pretty good. Interesting atmosphere on a lot of the songs, and I really like the use of synths/ electronics.
The music has a very alien and other-worldy quality, which I found very interesting.
Ballad of a Thin man sounds amazing, but Dylan isnt an amazing live artist
Its fine, but I dont think im gonna come back to it, and I question its placement on the list a bit. The opening and closing tracks are pretty great though
Theres nothing inherently wrong with the album, its just not my cup of tea.
Pretty good, but sounds fairly repetitive after a while. Hits hard though. Closer to a 3.5
Better than I expected. Somewhat generic, but still very good. closer to a 3.5
Closer to 3.5, doolittle is a lot better
I love dylan, this one is a bit overated though.
8 Mile is an amazing movie, but this album kinda sucks. Some songs are good (Rock Bottom is pretty great), but I find the lyrics incredibly annoying, and the instrumentals and samples are just ok.
Amazing samples, super unique rap album. Giving it a 4 for now, but this might go up. And it did!
I prefer transformer, but theres beauty to be found here among all the death and sadness.
the album defintley has a lull in the middle, but many great songs here, and definitley a classic. I liked it better than Tommy. I really loved Bargain, which I wasnt familiar with before. Closer to a 3.5
Fine, but not really my cup of tea. I liked it better than Buena Vista Social Club though, which has a similiar vibe.
It honestly dissapointed me a bit. Its still good, but feels way too long (and it isnt even that long). The closing track is pretty sick though
Pretty decent poppy new wave album. Not very original, but fun nonetheless. Closer to a 3.5
Better than I expected. Has a really enjoyable mood.
Pretty good. Superchill. Closer to a 3.5 though
It was fine, but I dont think ill revisit it.
Its drags a bit, and I prefer good kid, but its still an amazing album. I love the variety of musical styles. Closer to a 4.5
If it didnt have the cover of light my fire, this could potentially round up to a 5. As it stands, its still a really good album that builds a strong mood.
Different from what I expected, and im not 100% sure how I feel about it yet. Ill probably end up coming back to it. Surprisingly sad
Pretty good, has some excellent songs. Could use more energy and ocasionally lags a bit. Closer to a 3.5
Interesting album with a lot of Energy. Television has a cool cover of Fire Engine. Didnt blow me away, but still pretty interesting. Very raw.
Interesting album. Gets a bit repetitive later on, and the last song is questionable as fuck, but overall very interesting. Closer to a 3.7 maybe.
Interesting album. The Ocean in particular is amazing. The album loses steam later on though.
Interesting and unique album. Didnt love it, but I plan to come back to it.
What can be said about this album that hasnt already been said? Its absolutley incredible. Im not a jazz expert, and have only listened to about 4 dozen jazz albums, so I dont understand the music theory of it all, I just know that its an incredible experience to listen to this.
Probably the worst one Ive heard so far. I can understand why its there, but I really didnt enjoy it at all. The singing is incredibly annoying, and overall is just has a really trashy feel to it.
Very intense, raw energy to it.
Nothing bad, but its generally pretty borring and I find the lyircs kinda cringey and immature. Closer to a 2.5, but its not offensively bad enough to justify rating it a 2
Very good album, and his voice is incredible.
Closer to a 3.5. Its a pretty one dimensional, but theres lots of classics here. The album also serves as a cool historical document for the US during the early 60s, which I find very interesting.
Everyone on my colleges "class of 2025" insta page lists Frank Ocean as one of their favorite artists, so when this was generated, I checked it out just to know what all the fuss was about. And yeah, this album is excellent. Great mood, interesting songs, chill vibe. Great album.
Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. The album is really fun, and theres a good variety of music. Closer to a 3.7 maybe.
I dont know modern pop music very well, so it was nice to get this album to expand my music knowledge a bit.
Its not as good as A Tábua de Esmeralda or Força Bruta, but still a damn good and classic Jorge Ben album. closer to a 4.5
This Years Model is better, but this is a classic album with a lot of Costellos best songs (Red Shoes, Less Than Zero, Im not Angry, Allison, etc).
A bit too straightforward and stereotypical, but still pretty good.
Interesting samples and great flow. Very good album.
Its fine. I prefer the selt titled and Forever Changes though.
Pretty good, has a very 90s feel to it.
Pretty good, but its fairly repetitive. Could be about 3 or 4 songs shorter.
Pretty good. Some great bangers, but also some fairly forgettable songs. Still enjoyable though. I dont get why new wave albums have such low ratings on this website, I generally find new wave to be an inoffensive genre. I get not liking new wave, but I find it difficult to understand how someone could hate it with a passion.
While it does have some filler, the amazing songs here more than make up for it. Streets of Fire might be my favorite Springsteen Song (that ive heard so far at least). Closer to a 3.6 or 3.7
Beautiful singing and lyrics, and some great instruments. Very good album.
While it is unique, I did not enjoy it at all.
I prefer Songs of Love and Hate, but its still a damn good album. His voice is beautiful. Closer to a 3.5
Incredibly unique album. I lovet the concept. On personal enjoyment, its more like a 3, but Im giving a 4 just for how unique the concept is
4.5, but honestly, cant really find any major flaws with the album. Great mixture of energetic tracks with slower ballads, with super dense instrumentation.
Some very sweet and pleaseant songs, a couple of which I was already familiar with but had no idea who wrote them. Found it a bit one dimensional, but closer to a 3.5
More melodic and enjoyable than slanted and enchaned, and overall I like the songs better. Pretty great album.
Im not much of a blue-grass fan, but this was actually fairly enjoyable, but it is WAY too long (nearly 2 hours on the original), and does not have neary enough variety to justify that length. I like the snippits of conversation though. Overall, while I probably wont come back to it, it was still enjoyable
This music makes me feel like im about to tell the woman I love to get on a plane to help fight the nazis. The version in the book though is a 3 hour long boxset As much as I enjoyed this, 3 hours is way too much, so my rating is for whats linked to spotify rather than whats in the book
Hardcore just isnt my thing.
Interesting album. I really like the varied instrumentation, and a lot of the songs are very catchy, but some songs just downwright annoying, and the album name is trash. Closer t0 a 3.3
I absolutley love the first 2 songs, but the rest of the album loses me a bit. Still a pretty good album though, closer to a 3.3
It was fine, but kind of inconsistent.
Interesting album with strong atmosphere, but its fairly repetitive and dosent really have any diversity in the types of songs.
The Beatles evolved a lot on this album, and the effort really paid off. Not a perfect album, but still very good.
I always thought of Foo Fighters as a singles band, this is the first full album of theirs that Ive listened to. The best live show I ever saw was Foo Fighters, so it was nice to listen to one of their albums now. Gets a bit repetitive later on, but lots of cool songs. Closer to a 3.5
I liked it a lot more now than when I first listened to it. While not as varied as Something Else or as conceptual as Village Green, has a lot of quintesential Ray Davis style songs. Also, rosie won't you please come home is beautiful. Closer to a 3.5
Some interesting songs, but generally kind of borring. Its not bad though.
This album could have easily been an angry attack, but instead Springsteen sings about complex, nuanced emotions. I also love how a couple of songs have are inspired by Middle Eastern Music. Springsteens singing is also a lot clearer and less mumbled on this album. Great variety, mature lyrics, and powerful music. Overall, my favorite Springsteen album so far.
Im currently convinced that Nick Cave can do no wrong. Im always amazed by his ability to create powerful moods with his music.
Knew nothing going in, and its pretty atmospheric and interesting. Closer to a 3.5
Super calm and super chill jazz album. Sounds like its straight out of the early 60s. Not much else to say tbh.
Reminds me a bit of REM, but british. Overall, very good. Closer to a 3.5
Such a beautiful albums, from the lyrics to the instrumentals to the singing itself.
Pretty damn beautiful record. Closer to a 3.5
I like the folk influence here, but overall its nothing really that special. Still good though.
Very chill and calm, and also feels very warm.
Pretty great noise rock album with a lot of intensity..
Not as consistent or unique as some of their other albums, but still excellent. Kim Gordon in particular really shines on this one. On the higher end of 4.
Filha do João Gilberto, sobrinha do Chico Buarque. Familia foda, e um otimo album.
Its a pretty simple album, but genuinly enjoyable and fun. its not trying to be something greater than it is, but its still a well made pop album with some fun compositions and covers.
Pretty good album, defintley a huge influence on a lot of the new wave that came later on in the decade.
Bowies version of China Girl dosent hold a candle to the emotional rawness of this one. The mixture of electronic instrumentation and Iggy Pops raw style makes for a very interesting combination.
Not usually into metal, but I thought I would try this one out because its from Brazil. Not a fan of the whole Screaming vocal style, but there are some really interesting moments here (the final track is a standout for me), which I think place it a cut above other metal albums that Ive listened to. Closer to a 3.5, but I just cant take the screaming vocals seriously.
Judas Moment.
Has some interesting moments, but generally fairly bland, and not very unique. On the higher end of 2 or the lower end of 3
Pretty great punk album. Pop-punk, but with an agressive edge. Dosent have a whole lot of variety though, even by punk standards. Closer to a 3.5
Excellent album with an amazingly chill vibe.
The jazz influence on this album really amazed me the first time I heard it. Some excellent lyrics as well, and I really love the delivery. Unrelated to the music, but I also love the album cover.
Very beautiful folk album.
Strong atmosphere, very catchy songs.
Pretty great album, fusing rock, latin music, and jazz in a really coherent way. Closer to a 4.5
If its good enough for the dude, its good enough for me. Ramble Tamble is an amazing opener as well.
Based on reviews I had read prior, I expected something more eclectic and interesting. Its not terrible, but I found it very dissapointing, and I dont think it needs to be on the list.
Had some interesting ideas, but I found it pretty borring overall. Not bad, but on the lower side of 3.
Very interesting album, very fun and enjoyable to listen to. Now what I imagined it would sound like looking at the Album cover
Gets better towards the end, but I dont really like the country numbers that much. But the harder tracks at the end make up for it.
Despite metal really not being my cup of tea, I did think this was a pretty good album. I found some of the songs really hard to take seriously, but there were some excellent moments as well. To live is to Die in particular was very good. Closer to a 3.5
The Rolling Stones are annoying, because they have a lot of individual songs that I think are amazing, but I dont really like any of their albums that much. I find that their albums tend to have a lot of filler, and not very good flow. This one is no different. Its bookended by amazing tracks, but I dont really like most of the tracks in between.
Been listening to this album since I was like 3 years old. While I think ive partly outgrown it (not a huge fan of the lyrics in general), theres still some really interesting moments here. Closer to a 3.5 (partly for Nostalgias sake). Looney Tunes has an amazing guitar riff (also, is blue turk a reference to Dave Brubeck?).
Not bad, but the songs sound kind of borring and generic. This thing did come out in 1995 though, so I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt that this album probably wasnt generic at the time.
I really want to love this album, especially since court and spark is amazing, but I just dont. The music on this one dosent feel as creative as some of her other albums, and something about her singing style on this one just rubs me the wrong way. Its still good though. Im giving it a 3 for now, but I suspect that my opinion of it will improve over time.
Country just isnt my cup of tea. The first song is pretty good though.
One of Coltranes best albums, really showing how he pushed forth the boundaries of what jazz could be. Wait, wrong album. Kind of generic and borring at times, but not bad.
Interesting to see Leonerd Cohen try something very different. I still prefer his folk albums, but this is pretty good.
Fun fact, I broke my parents couch bouncing up and down to this album when I was like 4 years old.
Godamn, this album hits fucking hard.
Very interesting and atmospheric album. Giving it a 4 for now, but that might change later on.
Closer to a 3.5. Has some really incredible moments, and is very unique, has some really cool noir vibes to it. But I think it drags on a bit in the first half, and as unique as it is, it lacks sonic diversity. Maybe ill look more positively on this album in the future.
Some fantastic songs here (Removables, Interiors), but most of the songs here are pretty forgettable.
Great energetic punk album. Incredibly important to the development of the genre.
I always appreciate it when an album is short and isnt full of filler for expanding its runtime. This one is a great example of this. Great songs, a lot more `straight to the point` than Bayou Country. Good album, but its my least favorite of the 3 CCR albums on this list (they all got 4s though)
There were aspects of this that I really liked and aspects that I didnt like as much. Im leaning a 4, but the rating might change later.
Some interesting lyrics, but Country just isnt my cup of tea.
Not a huge fan of hardcore punk, but I thought this one was fine. On the lower side of 3 though, still don't think ill come back to it
Great jazz-fusion record. Feels very akin to Steely Dan.
Very fun and enjoyable album. Beautiful jangly guitar. Closer to a 3.5, as it wanes a bit in the back half.
Not a massive fan of The Who, but I love the rawness of this one, good combination of fun and power. Lulls a bit in the second half, but The Ox is one of the best album closers ever.
Electrifying album, that ends on an incredibly strong note. One of the best albums from the last 30 years
This album makes me feel like I'm the US president, and Im about to announce to the world that Im going to run for reelection despite my recent medical scandal, and the ghost of my secretary is encouraging me along the way.
I hated listening to this, but I respect this album for being what it is and just going for it
Sufjan Stevens esque instumentals with Smiths esque lyrics
Don't like Poledo, but the rest of this album is an awesome, fuzzy romp. J Mascis is a guitar genius. I also love Lee Ranaldo's contribution on Little Fury Things.
Kinda borring, but not bad. I may be a pretentious music nerd, but I still enjoy this.
Great album, and a landmark of the post-punk genre.
Dosen't have great flow, but a lot of great songs and great production as well (I love the sound of the drums on this one).
Alright. The first song is pretty great, and its an important point in the development of Neil Youngs amazing career, but as an album its nothing special.
A lot of raw energy here. I don't find the samples as interesting as on other rap albums, but I appreciate the influence that this album had. Closer to a 3.5
I really like the storytelling on this album and the raw presentation style. I think it shows a lot more maturity than what most people assosciate with Springsteen, and reminds me of The Rising in that sense.
We Live in a Society
Thought this was pretty good, liked it better than Talking Book.
Songs 2-4 are incredible (especially Crosstown Traffic), and the songs from 1983 onwards are also excellent, but I find the middle section somewhat weak. Still giving it 4 stars, but this would probably be a 5 star album if it were a single album instead of a double.
Pretty similiar to Park Life, which is also a really great and fun album.
I can understand why people would hate this album, but I think its fantastic. John Lydon really came into his own, and the songs (particularly in the first half) build on Punks foundation in an incredibly influential way (I mean, Theme almost has a shoegaze sound to it). The last couple of songs are kind of forgettable though.
I absolutely love the insanity of this Album.
Probably the best stones album I got so far. Much more consistent than a lot of their 60s discography.
Not really my cup of tea.
Very good, love the ambience of the first track, love the chaos of the second one, and the in-between chaos and calm of the last 2. Fantastic album.
Very good, love the ambience of the first track, love the chaos of the second one, and the in-between chaos and calm of the last 2. Fantastic album.
I have complicated feelings about this album: I think this is the start of Pink Floyds decline, as Roger starts putting all the bands effort in narrative and story, sacrificing the creative extended instrumental passages of their previous work. Its still a fantastic album though, but it dosen't have what I love from Pink Floyd.
Pretty borring album tbh, althought the second song is pretty fun.
I know Bono is super pretentious and they aren't a cool band, but I think this is a great album. If that loses me points with the indie community, so be it.
Might increase this rating later
I love the density and noisyness of this album.
