Not a fan
Too tocky
It started okay, but I wasn't really grabbed by it to be honest.
very pog band
A little on the long side
mediocre SP album. There's a lot of filler on here and it would've benefited from being a single disc release. the good songs are fucking GOOD though.
cool album need more time to listen
Damn Good
Well, that was sure a journey. First thing's first: I don't hate this album, but I don't love it either. You can tell a ton of work has been put into the creation of the 28 songs bestowed upon us, but it's painfully obvious that the quality of these 28 tracks varies heavily. Side 1 is nothing short of phenomenal. Atmosphere and diversity is superb, not to mention the musical prowess on display is unmatched in all albums of the era. Of the 14 songs there was only one I had a strong distaste for (Love) whereas the other 13 were stellar amalgamations of grunge, symphonic rock and alt rock sown together into an exquisite tapestry. Side 2 on the other hand is an utter disappointment and a horrible journey through all the worst cliches 90s music has to offer. The distortion is there and it's worse than ever. The gentler cuts sound banal and laughably stupid. This isn't to say there aren't highlights but the lowlights outweigh them and that's something I didn't want to happen, even more so after the appraisal I gave Side 1. Highlights are few and far between but are as follows: Thirty-Three, 1979, Thru the Eyes of Ruby, Stumbleine. THAT IS IT. Of the 14 tracks these were the only ones that in any way, shape or form brought me satisfaction. I want to tell myself I'm being too harsh on this, but I really don't think I am. It's almost as if an entirely new band recorded the other 14 tracks. The quality and solidity of the tracks took an ugly nosedive almost right from the get-go and I really can't say I would ever listen to it again. If Side 1 was a gorgeous tapestry, then Side 2 is an ugly snot-entwined piece of off-white pieces of garbled chewed up rope. This album sure is a tale of two halves. I'm torn. On the one hand I seriously admire and adore the first side's masterful blend of genres and artful diversity on display. But on the other hand I outright despise the lack of effort and beauty on Side 2. I thought this would be higher than an average 5, but I just can't bring myself to increase the score. It's sad but ultimately not that hard of a decision. 5/10
This is an album that I wish I had half-stars for. This is almost a 4 star album. And, if I listened on a different day, in a different mood, it would probably be a 4 star.
Classic 90s prog rock. Nostalgia affected the rating, for sure.
Very long but a few good songs
This is really really beautiful. I felt super connected to this record in an almost unexplainable way.
This is the first review to really surprise me. Perhaps that means that the negativity is mostly on my mood, or wanting to be contrarian, or comparisons to the other low points so far. In any case, it feels a little shallow to complain about Billy Corgan's voice, but I find it truly annoying. The songs, on the other hand, are fine. The guitars are a high point sometimes. There are some pretty solid tunes (that I would like better covers). The second disc seems much better, but I'm not a little offended that I listened to the first to get to it. I would have appreciated these songs more in a compilation, which is what Mellon Collie sounds like. I'm shocked that it's an album.
9/10 This album is concise despite having all sorts of songs, contains gems, and made me feel better on a sad day. Imo the pumpkins' best work. F.T.: Tonight, tonight (duh. One of the best songs of all time)
1995. Key Songs: 1979, Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Tonight Tonight
Some bops but the Spotify version is six fucking hours long lmao
I listened to this album A LOT as a kid (even though I was born after the 90s), and I thought it would be another example of an album that hasnt aged well since my childhood. But honestly, this album is fantastic. Despite being a double album (and a double CD, so its very long), the song quality is very consistent throughout, and I cant really pick out any songs that are bad or disposable. Its incredibly ambitous, and has a good variety of music, with a lot of dark grungy songs, but also some very beautiful ones. Giving it 5 stars but I have a couple of gripes: it dosent flow too well (particurley in the second CD), and a lot of the lyrics are trying too hard to be dark/ dramatic.
whoa what a ride! it's longer than your average album but boy i didn't want it to end <3
not a bad album, was a big hit when i was a kid and i remember a good few choons off it
I loved it!
