Debut
Björkincredible voice wow! wasn’t sure how i’d feel listening to a full album by björk, but in general i really enjoyed this album. the last half is amazing.
incredible voice wow! wasn’t sure how i’d feel listening to a full album by björk, but in general i really enjoyed this album. the last half is amazing.
3.5/5 in general an okay feeling album for me. it’s not amazing, it’s not bad, it’s just “there”. i enjoy a few songs a lot tho, uncle salty is really nice. i love aerosmith when the songs aren’t speedy or fast singing. so the chorus in uncle salty is really, really good. sweet emotion i love as well. fave song: sweet emotion
for starters; a lot of people don’t seem to realise the link to spotify is wrong and only shows two tracks on side B, making it 10 mins short. go to the deluxe version and the first four tracks is the actual full album. so the album; i Love this. def listen on a good pair of headphones. it massages my brain so nicely. i love ambient music in general and i’m very impressed they managed to create this back in 1973. in the same year they started recording the album, they purchased a moog that originally came from The Rolling Stones. so they had to learn how this worked in a short while before deciding to record. idk, it’s all very interesting reading about the process of this record. and the influence it had on the genre in the years to come. i wouldn’t listen to this without headphones as it probably won’t achieve the same nice brain massage. fave track is the 17 min title track. it’s simply Amazing. a low 5.
first time listening to this album and i really loved it! my least fave song was the james brown cover “please please please” - felt like it really didn’t fit in and i don’t quite love that sound in general. “the good’s gone” i loved this one so much! “the ox” was amazingly fun and epic to listen to!! i am wildly impressed by the insane drumming - *claps*. “my generation” is an absolutely iconic song ofc.
i tried to listen but it’s really not for me so i gave up.
fave songs; oceans, black, even flow, deep not quite the album for me but there’s a few good songs on here.
3.7/5 this is my first exposure to this band and this album is very easy to listen to. “don’t let me be lonely tonight” is a very beautiful ballad. the ultimate stanky song is “sunshine (go away today)” - love it! “summer breeze” however is my fave. i was surprised to recognize it so must’ve heard it somewhere, the guitar solo is my fave off the record.
i am pleasantly surprised by this album! it definitely helped to listen to it knowing it was a concept album and had a movie/story to it. janelle’s voice is absolutely incredible! “come alive (war of roses)” is def an example of that. great song. 3.8/5
2.7/5 it’s really well produced, the bass is very farty but in general, it’s not really hitting with me. i felt a bit bored listening esp when some songs feels like they drag on forever. le freak however, is iconic.
having only listened to odelay before, this was a massive change of style and i am loving this so much. it’s like a blanket for my soul. i’m hearing sounds of ryan adams, air, and nick drake. especially nick drake in the song “round the bend” - which is my favourite from the album.
2 for the music only
a solid 3/5 i do enjoy discovering where those famous songs come from that i’ve heard throughout my life but never knew who sang them. this is the case with “thinking of you” and “we are family”, where the former is an absolute banger. i enjoyed two other songs from this album but the rest felt boring to me and i struggled to enjoy them properly.
lyrical content is not for me, musically it’s.. noisy. i do like the bluesy sound of “motor city is burning”.
3.8/5 the first jazz album i quite enjoyed.
beautiful voice and very easy to listen to. other than “son of a preacher man”, nothing too special but “the windmills of your mind” was really good.
this is why i am doing this project, to finally get a chance to listen to these old iconic albums that everyone else seems to know. i really enjoyed this! i’ve obviously heard of carole king before and i knew a few songs from this album, especially ‘where you lead’ from gilmore girls. a really lovely album all around full of hits and beautiful songs.
well i enjoyed listening to the king! never heard a full album of elvis before so this was fun. i started listening to the originals tho and honestly prefer them. esp ray charles ‘i got a woman’ which is iconic to me.
i did not enjoy most of this but there's a few songs that brought the rating up to 2 instead of a 1. "welcome" was a nice one i hadn't heard before. "hurt" i knew already and i enjoy that song. in general, disc 2 is miles better than disc 1. i couldn't get through disc 1 but disc 2 is nice except for that one song that i skipped xD
solid. hysteria is my favourite track on the album. (rly do not like the album cover tho, way too scary 😅) 10/10 to drummer rick allen.
i like some of the sounds and beats, but i really don’t like listening to hip/hop. i gave this a go because not every song is marked explicit. i did enjoy the jump from “hey ladies”, to a short country song, to the rock sound of “looking down the barrel of a gun” 😆 i do not enjoy the shouty vocals, even if that is their trademark.
first time listening to this album. simple twist of fate absolutely beautiful song! idiot wind is looong but has such emotion to the vocals. meet me in the morning is a lovely song. the jack of hearts song is way too long but hey, at least it inspired joan baez to write “diamonds and rust” so thank you bob. shelter from the storm, another lovely song. the guitar riff in buckets of rain remind me of the song “in the summertime”. a really nice song that!
an album that will surely grow on me the more i listen to it.
here’s how little i know of eric clapton; my initial thought was “oh that’s fun, they named an album after eric clapton’s iconic song and covered it.” 😆 but now that i’ve listened to it, i did not enjoy it. i didn’t know the 4 minute long outro to layla existed and it completely threw me off and i just cannot make friends with it, i guess i’ve only heard a cover. had it been a separate instrumental track instead, then sure. it’d be good i guess. but i just wanted to hear layla. nonetheless, the fact that layla exists on the album makes it a 2 and not a 1. the last song on the album that was more acoustic and not endless shredding was quite lovely.
it kind of sits between not great, not bad - it just exists and it was enjoyable to listen to but nothing special. the last track “looking glass” was great however, and i think my favourite of the album.
3.6/5 it was a bit of a mental struggle to start listening to this album as i wasn’t getting j to it. but eventually got through that wall and honestly, it’s a good album. it has a few really amazing songs but then kind of drops off in places for me. i do love the singer’s voice. fave songs being; -skeletons -dull life -shame and fortune least fave song; -heads will roll
3.7/5 i am pleasantly surprised by this, i’ve never listened to anything bruce other than hearing some hits on the radio. i don’t think i recognised a single song on this album except maybe “the promised land”. it felt slightly familiar but i have no clue. it’s a good album, great in places, i enjoyed it a lot! honourable mention to “racing in the street” - a very, very beautiful song!
3.8/5 i really, really enjoyed this discovery! absolutely wonderful voice. it was great fun to hear a more authentic “the lion sleeps tonight” version, which i much prefer in a way. apparently the original is from the 30’s. fave song; “where does it lead” - the jazz chords are amazing, wonderful lyrics. it was difficult to find any information on this song. i think it may be written by someone named gwen davis but google really had no information to give me. the cover of “house of the rising sun” was really lovely to listen to as well. i loved hearing the african language being sung as well. click languages fascinate me so much. overall a really pleasant album!
not quite my thing but there was a few interesting guitar riffs here and there.
in my brain it’s an unwritten rule that only the beatles can name an album “let it be” xD but yes, this didn’t really fall into my personal enjoyment. maybe i’ll feel different on another day and in a different mood.
a forest absolutely slaps and i’ll listen to it again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again……. p.s absolutely love the album cover art.
NOTE: i listened to ‘the very best of the gershwin’ album from this songbook because there is no way i am listening to over 3 hours of this one album. it’s really nice background music. amazing orchestra and voice. 45 mins is enough tho, i applaud anyone who listened to the entire 3+ hours of this song book. as for the painting on the artwork, that’s a 5/5. i love it! i read the artist was bernard buffet, a frenchman. i didn’t think i’d know any songs but i do know “fascinating rhythm” as covered by jamie cullum!
3.5/5 in general an okay feeling album for me. it’s not amazing, it’s not bad, it’s just “there”. i enjoy a few songs a lot tho, uncle salty is really nice. i love aerosmith when the songs aren’t speedy or fast singing. so the chorus in uncle salty is really, really good. sweet emotion i love as well. fave song: sweet emotion
pleasantly boring. fave song: everything is free it reminds me of the milk carton kids but so much that i want to go listen to them instead xD
2/5 this sound is not for me, but there were a few songs that i liked the music of, but the screaming vocals and lyrics is just not something i enjoy. “here comes your man” is something i’ve heard before and it’s a good song. “silver” was the first song i hadn’t heard before that i actually enjoyed. but that was about it. it seems they were a formative band for other artists that came after them tho so i guess i shall say thank you for giving me radiohead - one of my fave bands ever.
4.9/5 i love this album so much. it’s grown on me over time and it’s just such an incredibly beautiful album! the first track is always a bit challenging for me but i appreciate it more and more with each listen. my favourite tracks are basically everything after that. epitaph is an incredibly beautiful and epic song. the only place where i tend to lose my focus is during the slow, improvised part in moonchild. i generally don’t mind it but it drags on for too long. one thing it does well tho, is when the title track finally hits, you instantly go YES!! the title track is another insanely beautiful song that gives me goosebumps. i want to learn these chords because they have such a nice sound to them! the album cover is cool tbh, it makes for a perfect emote in a discord server 😆 i bet barry godber never could’ve predicted that xD
spotify don’t have all the 11 songs - just a note to anyone else. “the sound of someone you love who’s going away and it doesn’t matter” was incredibly emotional and beautiful. it made me cry.
i truly did not enjoy any of this xD i made sure to listen to every single track just to be sure and the only few seconds i enjoyed was when i could hear a synth similar to the one in baba o’reilly by the who. i’ve heard other daft punk stuff which has been a lot more enjoyable. congrats daft punk’s debut album for becoming my first 1 star rating.
i’m not sure i have ever really listened to paul weller, but i truly loved this album! sunflower is my fave song of the album, what a banger. a rock solid 4/5
i first listened to this in the background while cleaning and doing various things and i was enjoying it. but now when i focus on it and pay attention to the music fully, it’s not really hitting me. i should love it, it all sounds good and well made. but it doesn’t quite click for some reason. it just simply exists. fave song: “if everyone was listening”
no, tyvm. i hate being dizzy and i’m def not a rascal.
the amount of times i’ve tried to get through this album and i simply don’t enjoy it at all… there’s nothing that makes me want to keep listening, my brain don’t find it interesting and it feels like such a chore. i will say that two songs were very nice; “you haven’t done nothin’” and “they won’t go when i go” i don’t want to give a 2 but it’s more a high 2, i’m just done at this point and i’m raging 😆 there’s other stevie wonder albums i’ve enjoyed much much more.
3.7/5 can grow into a 4 if i get used to the first 4-5 tracks. as i’ve noticed with this project, i’m not a fan of most punk music. but this album feels more towards the rock punk genre and i have to say, i quite enjoy the second half of the album. the first four songs isn’t quite hitting me, but after love battery i’m really starting to enjoy it. the outro in sixteen is really cool. fiction romance is COOL, and the transition to autonomy is amazing. autonomy is my fave song from the album, but the last track moving away from the pulsebeat is a close contender. the drum beat absolutely slaps in that song!
3.6/5 if the whole vibe of the album was like the song Melt, then i’d love this. alas it’s not, so this is a bit too exhausting to listen to for over an hour. i started out enjoying it and it may also just be a mood thing, but my mood has gone out the window. the album definitely sounds very good though, maybe if it had been a lot shorter i would’ve enjoyed it more. i struggle with some EDM but the kind of soft house that is Melt is right up my sleeve. so my fave song is most def Melt.
4.8/5 this was my introduction to PJ Harvey a while back and i absolutely love this album! i needed to change my perspective some at first and after that i really started loving it. my fave songs are probablyyy… - this mess we’re in (feat. thom yorke) - we float - one line
lyrically, not really something i enjoy listening to. musically, it’s much of the same sound but it’s not bad. i’m not really into reggae in general. i enjoyed “no sympathy” a lot.
i started off listening to the iggy mix. “i need somebody” has a cool sound and beat. probs the song i enjoyed the most. in general did not like, it’s not an album for me at all. now listening to the bowie mix, despite it flaws, i enjoy it a bit more. i can’t explain why, tho the first song “search and destroy” sounds a bit awful in the ears haha. honestly bowie mixes of the last two songs sounds more pleasant than the loud, muddy iggy mix. fave songs are “gimme danger” and “i need somebody”. 2.5/5
ngl, this actually kinda slaps. i wasn’t in the mood for it the other day and i don’t quite enjoy this classic rock sound. but today my mood is absolutely there for it and i am enjoying it a lot 😆 the guitars are absolutely gorgeous sounding. so many layers and it’s beautiful. vocals insane. very nice album tbh!
beautiful voices and harmonies. a looot of covers. in general it’s quite nice. i’d classify this as nice easy listening music but nothing that really excites me much. at least not from only having listened to it only once.
it do be funky.
4.6/5 i've heard a few songs off this album but this was the first time i listened to it in full and i loved it! so many bangers through and through! i really, really enjoyed Slide Away. long term tho, i think it would be a bit exhausting to listen to. it’s loud, distorted and noisy. but i was in the right mood for it today and really enjoyed it. i even listened to the morning glory album straight after (which i thiiink i like better?!). i know that the way they sing is kind of their thing but i really enjoyed the songs where the voices were more “normal”. then again, LASAAAAANNYYYYAAAA is quite fun haha. in other words; i need to listen to this a few more times to see how i continue to get on with it xD i’ll rate it a weak 5. edit: it’s going down to a 4 after having gone back to it today. solid album still but not a 5 to me.
i had nr IV last week, and the process went the same way with nr III. didn’t particularly enjoy. on a second listen, i enjoyed it a lot. and now i feel like i never want to listen to them ever again. i’ve never come across a band before that has made me feel so indecisive haha.
i am really struggling to get through this. it doesn’t hold up on its own without being in the movie, that i haven’t seen btw. but i am just very bored, and it just feels.. bland. it doesn’t sound bad, it’s just.. bland and boring. it’s prob great in the actual movie.
it’s good jazz i suppose 👏🏼 smol rant about the most annoying track order on spotify, it’s just added the bonus tracks after the initial take, as the bonus are just other takes of some songs already on the record. if i would listen to this again, i’d preferably make my own playlist with the correct order leaving out the bonus tracks.
sonically i quite enjoyed this a lot. american dream, the title track was really lush sounding. but lyrically not much of an album for me.
as much of a pioneer as wikipedia says he is, i did not really find this special. i was quite bored at times. the best songs were The Dolphins and Green Rocky Road, with the latter being my fave. after some thinking i realised why i like it. it’s because it sounds like nick drake’s one of these things first. not sure if nick drake heard fred neil’s original and copied it but it’s incredibly similar. the last 8 min instrumental on this album was cool i guess but i felt like turning it off halfway through. the best part is the second half tho. i do quite enjoy his voice, it’s def very nick cave sounding.
honestly a really nice album. i’m glad i finally got to listen to tim buckley. “pleasant street” is by far the best song on there for me. incredible vocals, incredible song, very reminiscent of his son, jeff buckley. tim was only 20 years old when this was recorded as well.
incredible voice wow! wasn’t sure how i’d feel listening to a full album by björk, but in general i really enjoyed this album. the last half is amazing.
this was a trip and a half 😆
fave song: winter fave vocal melody: the way she sings “chains” on crucify honorary mention to the bravery it took to write “me and my gun” and release it to the public. i couldn’t listen to it because it’s too heavy and way too triggering for me. but i admire her strength greatly!
fave songs; modern age, last nite, hard to explain and trying your luck. least fave thing about this album is the nekkid album cover.
it's really quite boring and meh. nothing that really grabs my attention and makes me want to repeat it. the first track was probably the track i enjoyed the most.
comfortably very boring. the entire album could be one song really xD
radiohead is one of my fave bands ever and while this album itself don’t quite reach up to a 5 for me, i still love it and it contains some of my fave songs of theirs; pyramid song (just wow!), i might be wrong (has the coolest sound) and knives out (just beautiful).
2.7/3 leonard cohen was an interesting listen because i’ve never heard an actual album of his before. sadly didn’t find it much to my taste. BUT! avalanche is an amazing song. i love it, the guitar is just amazing. i love this style of playing. the strings are so beautiful. the dark vocals really fit the mood as well. another song i enjoyed is famous blue raincoat.
unfortunately the album did not excite me much.
the weakest of 3s. the first track is amazing, sounds very trip hop portishead like so that was cool to hear back in 1969. Hooverphonic sampled this song in 2 Wicky, which is probably where i’ve first heard this. the rest wasn’t great. lyrics and … noises of the second track wasn’t my thing. third track was okay. nothing special. last track i was absolutely raging at the 8min 40 seconds of talking before the song even started. i would’ve given it a 2 but for the first track being amazing he gets a 3 😆
what an absolute delight of an album to have discovered! i absolutely love this! it has such a nice feel and flow to it, very much a full album listen experience that i love. the second and third track are my favourites. the title track has a beat and feel to it that reminds me of radiohead, which is one of my fave bands of all time.
4/5 george, you wrote some of my fave songs for the beatles but tackling this humongous album is not easy. a few notes on the songs as i go along: i’d have you anytime: lovely song but not really a song i’d want to start an album with. it feels like a middle song where you need some rest from some upbeat bangers. my sweet lord: heard it before, it’s a bit tiring to listen to 😅 wah-wah: okay i have listened to this several times and i now like it a lot. the electric guitar slaps. isn’t it a pity: such a long outro, but a nice song. what is life: genuinely really enjoy this song! if not for you: i like it!! behind that locked door: absolutely lovely choon mate. that pedal steel is gorgeous. let it down: oh this is a really cool chord progression!!! my fave song so far! run of the mill: another really nice song! summary disc 1: i’ve given it several listens and honestly quite like it a lot! disc 2: beware of darkness: may be my fave george solo song! it’s such a beautiful song. apple scruff: a much needed silly song after beware of darkness. ballad of sir frankie crisp: not bad not bad, some melody is similar to beware of darkness. all things must pass: another george favourite of mine. art of dying: OKAY THIS SLAPS!? isn’t it a pity: yes. again. i don’t know why this is on here twice in different versions 😅and i don’t know which version i like the most xD summary disc 2: after a re-listen i like it better than the first time listening. the apple studios jam disc 3 i will view as bonus content and not include in my rating… for the sake of listening to everything, i did listen to it.
i had to read up on the story of this album to fully understand why it sounds the way it does, and oh man.. 5/5. it’s quite impossible to not listen to “borrowed tune” and not be hit with an emotional freight train. “new mama” is absolutely incredible, so is “albuquerque” wow. just wow. i love lap steel guitar so much. i love harmonies. what an album!
*furiously stares at that gorgeous guitar*
this was too noisy and raw for my tired saturday head. “mardy bum” was basically the only song i enjoyed. i have heard it before, along with “i bet you look good..”. the last song was quite nice.
quite nice album but nothing amazing to me. “you told me” reminds me so much of “if i needed someone” by the beatles. “shades of gray” also reminds me of another song i haven’t figured out yet. those two are my fave songs from this. honourable mention to “yilch” because hilarious song 😆
it’s just volume 1 that’s the original release and the one in the book. so i am not listening to volume 2 and the bonus tracks on spotify. it’s really not my thing this. i love ray’s voice but i really don’t enjoy big band music much. i feel i need to be there live to properly enjoy it. it is very respectful and amazing the history and impact this album had. but enjoyment wise it’s still only a 3 for me.
people hating on something just because they don’t understand the lyrics is wow 😅 i feel i don’t need it with this one and i loved the vibe and sound of it all, i love the voice as well! good find on the list and i hope to find more albums in languages that’s not only english. because it’s def needed! downside is it’s quite long, 11 tracks at 1 hour basically. cut it down to 40 mins tops and i’m happy xD that seems to be my preferred length for an album in this project i’ve noticed haha
g’wan lads!
well this was surely interesting 😅 i’m learning throughout this project i am absolutely not a fan of leonard cohen. “take this waltz” was the only song i even remotely liked. couldn’t even finish listening to the title track as lyrics were … not something i enjoyed 😅 “jazz police” was a song that gave me many laughs 😆 on a second listen…. “first we take manhattan” actually slaps 😆 it’s stanky and i am finding myself head bopping haha 1.7/5
i enjoy this but it’s not amongst my fave bowie sounds. FAYYMEEEEEE!! however, is absolutely iconic!
simple man is the best song on the album, the rest is a bit average territory and don’t quite reach me properly atm. free bird is probably overplayed in my head at this point.
i really enjoyed the first song but the rest didn’t quite grab me the same way. it’s an average 3. it’s good, it’s just nothing that seems to excite my brain atm. some songs were quite fun tho like “the toonerville trolley” 😆
3.8/5 i feel like this should be a 4 but i can’t decide. it was great, but it didn’t really hit me, i’ve not been in a music mood so i struggle with really enjoying this the way i know i probably could. the first song was the only song i felt like “i love this!” gonna give it a 3 with the chance of upgrading it to a 4 on a better day.
easy 5, one of my favorite albums of all time! it’s just fantastic all around. this is the coldplay i love the most. yellow is one of those songs i simply haven’t gotten tired of yet through all these years. mainly because i truly love the original sound of it. it’s kind of alt rocky and that guitar riff is the best part about it. just never gets old to listen to. sparks is really, really nice to play on acoustic guitar. and while listening to this for the millionth time i now want to learn the short title track, parachutes. i also see the weird coldplay hate shines through in the review section. i’ve never understood it, but then again i don’t understand humans.
a very theatrical and musical sounding album. it lies somewhere in between the 3 and 4 territory, can’t quite make up my mind about it. i don’t really see myself putting this on again. “i don’t know what it is” - i quite like this!! “14th street” was fun. “beautiful child” is my favourite song on the album. it’s amazing! the last song “dinner at eight” was really beautiful 😭 i do really like his voice, but i understand why some people don’t.
i can hear that it’s good… but i don’t really feel it’s interesting enough to want to keep listening. there were a few songs that peaked my interest but in general, not feeling it for now. i just wanted to go listen to Magical Mystery Tour or Sgt Peppers by The Beatles instead 😅 it will prob work better when i don’t feel completely burnt out on this genre and the 60s/70s from this list.
not quite my vibe today. i enjoyed the slower ballad. other than that, feels like i'm listening to the same song for 40 mins. i enjoy the songs that has vocals a lot more than the instrumentals.
this mix sounds so strange in my ears, kind of muffled in a way? i don’t really enjoy this much. idk why. i’m just… noup. “pantomime horse” probably the best song. 2.8/5
stan getz a 5 (charlie byrd also gets a 5)
i had no idea what to expect but i really like this!! having read up on it, it seems to have been really influential. i liked that the two band members wanted to do different things so side A is one style and side B is another style. i love this. g’wan then! take my 5.
for starters; a lot of people don’t seem to realise the link to spotify is wrong and only shows two tracks on side B, making it 10 mins short. go to the deluxe version and the first four tracks is the actual full album. so the album; i Love this. def listen on a good pair of headphones. it massages my brain so nicely. i love ambient music in general and i’m very impressed they managed to create this back in 1973. in the same year they started recording the album, they purchased a moog that originally came from The Rolling Stones. so they had to learn how this worked in a short while before deciding to record. idk, it’s all very interesting reading about the process of this record. and the influence it had on the genre in the years to come. i wouldn’t listen to this without headphones as it probably won’t achieve the same nice brain massage. fave track is the 17 min title track. it’s simply Amazing. a low 5.
i was in bed listening to this on headphones and wow. what a fantastic album! it’s incredibly cool what the human voice is capable of. i have thoroughly enjoyed this. “vokuro” is my favourite song and it completely took me by surprise and made me cry. it felt so emotional! second favourite track is “desired constellation”. i am still very new to björk’s music but this has made me appreciate her voice so much. i honestly don’t understand why this is rated so low by people. open up your mind! this is absolutely a 5 to me.
note to self: the albums ends on “not available” as the spotify version is the reissue from 2001 that has bonus tracks from his other albums included. this is really nice and laid back mixed with nice funky sounds! absolutely love the guitar work. the vocal walk down at 1:48 in the first track is my fave thing on the whole album. it is GORGEOUS!!!! this title track is my favourite of the album for sure. i am a bit torn whether i feel this is a high 3 or a low 4 because it does kind of drop off a bit too much for me. even just the second track being such a mood shift from the hype first track is something i struggle with. i listened to the extra 4 bonus tracks and yeah i get why people think it’s too long with the bonus tracks. the original release is a perfect length at 33 something minutes.
i don’t know what i’ve just listened to 😅
