Album Summary

Stephen Stills is the debut solo album by American musician Stephen Stills released on Atlantic Records in 1970. It is one of four high-profile albums (all charting within the top fifteen) released by each member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in the wake of their 1970 chart-topping album Déjà Vu, along with After the Gold Rush (Neil Young, September 1970), If I Could Only Remember My Name (David Crosby, February 1971) and Songs for Beginners (Graham Nash, May 1971). It was primarily recorded between CSNY tours in London and Los Angeles. It was released in the United States on November 16, 1970, and in the United Kingdom on November 27, 1970. The album features many themes common to 1960s' countercultural beliefs, with many songs directly inspired by Stills' on-going and previous relationships with girlfriends and members of CSNY. The album was an immediate commercial success, in both the UK and the US, going top ten and being certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. In 1974, it was ranked number 70 by the NME writers in their best albums of all time. The album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. It was voted number 129 in Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums in 2000.

it wasn't bad

Strong 2.5 again but not good enough for a 3: Early morning coffee good vibes Church (part of someone)

Bit annoying

ok album. not my speed but I was surprised at Love The One You're With being from the 70's sounds like a song that came out later.

Solid stuff. Love the folk-rock blend and the soulful singing of Stephen Stills. For sure a great introduction to the artist as a whole.

Generic. 3/5

2/5 O thought going into this I would like it more but it was pretty pedestrian for me.

Na, not for me.

"There's a girl right next to you And she's just waiting for something to do." Right. Sure. And that was the best song.

Nice stuff.

I need a 2.5 stars

I really enjoyed this. Will be coming back for sure. This definately hits better at night too which will be something to experience. Best song is probably Cherokee but it’s hard to choose because all the songs are good in their own way.

After Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young released their album Déjà Vu, all four members released solo records that sold well and helped add to the mythos of the supergroup. Stephen Stills brought the heat with support from not only Jimi Hendrix, but Eric Clapton also contributed guitar work to the self-titled record. It was an instant success, topping out at #3 in the US and #8 in the UK, garnering universal critical praise as it did so. The album also produced his highest charting solo single, Love the One You're With, which topped out at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. As good as the record is, I do have a gripe regarding continuity, or the lack thereof. Though the songs are mostly great, that's what they are...songs. There's no cohesion of styles that help cement these tracks into an album, existing instead as disparate songs in a collection. In the end, when your voice is as strong and recognizable as Stephen Stills, none of those little gripes matter much.

I never really knew much about Stephen stills other than the harmonies of Crosby stills Nash and or young. This is the first thing ive ever heard from him. Im surprised at his versatility. He does a bunch of differnt stuff thay i wasn't expecting. Some folky stuff and some rockers. A little jazzy stuff too. It bobs when I think its gonna weave. Its interesting. Im not blown away but it kept me going for the whole run time. Just a solid little record of some fun enough stuff.

Folk rock, hard rock.

Never got into this genre of music. Well done, but just not my preference.

I like the other stuff he's in, just not this one so much. 3/5

I don't think I ever realized Love the One You're With was a Stephen Stills song. overall the album was fine, if a bit dull. 3/5.

A found all his own, yet incorporating a huge diversity of gendres

Better than I thought it would be 3.5/5

This album is manic but the highs are really, really high.

Some well written songs with meaningful lyrics by the man who is rock music's most underrated rated guitarist.

2 things. 1. The single is maybe the worst song? Love the one you're with a corny ass sentiment. 2. This kinda goes hard? Like I would rather out this on than a CSN record, or even CSNY and maybe even a few Neil Young records. Stephen Stills, I was not familiar with your game.

This was fine. 3.0

Solidan album, nešto lijepe gitare, ali ništa spektakularno stvarno.

nice enough

Good album, fun listen, bit too pop-y for me nut still good. The choruses and solos were the best part of every song. That being said, YOU CAN'T REALLY BE WRONG WHEN YOU HAVE HENDRIX AND CLAPTON ON THE SAME ALBUM. Like holy shit this guy had a lot of support. Highlights: Love the One You're With, Church (Pt. of Someone), and To a Flame Honorable mentions: Do for the Others and We are Not Helpless Solid 7/10, would listen again

The guitar on this album, especially the song with Hendrix and Clapton kept the rating up. It is an ok album overall.

Nothing special

Fine. CSN is better as a group, the best solo member is obviously Y. It just sort of meanders along as an album and then ends. Nothing special or extraordinary.

Twangy folk rock

Didn’t like it

Pues es como por una parte rock con gosspel y luego otra parte muy blues.

전체적으로 평범한 느낌이었지만 나쁘지 않은 앨범이었다. Overall, it felt ordinary, but it wasn't a bad album.

6/10… power pop / folk / *1970

Opening with the best song ever written about infidelity. Rest of the album is not that exciting, but very listenable regardless. Best track: Love The One You're With Rating: 7/10

Gary Burden specialised in album covers design and is considered a pioneer of the concept of album cover art. He won a Grammy and was nominated for others. Not for this one though. The cover of Stephen Stills' 1970 self-titled debut album was photographed by Henry Diltz. The use of a press photo even Stills realised was going to be dull so he brought along a strange coloured giraffe to spice it up. This is a marketing dept design with the type big at the top and a ‘wacky’ press type photo with the artist clearly depicted singing while holding the principal instrument of his work. Even the thickest fan would understand what they were about to buy. Music deserved a better cover.

Better than Coldplay

Bit of an oddity here considering the popularity of the other act with his name in it. It’s not bad by any means and like the other 3, there’s material here that rightly made its way to the main gig’s sets but...it’s all just a bit of a footnote. A very star-laden footnote, to be sure.

It was ok. I've listened to it twice and already forgotten all the songs.

Standouts Love the One You're With Old Times Good Times

I am surprised to see this one, just like I was surprised to see "Manassas" (a hugely boring record). I will say "Love The One You're With" is a masterpiece song, but the rest is filler for the single his team knew was going to be a bonafide hit song. I can hear Graham Nash singing in the background on "LTOYW" so I researched. You might find this interesting: Graham Nash did sing backup on "Love the One You're With." He appears alongside David Crosby, Rita Coolidge, her sister Priscilla Jones, and John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful lead singer) on backing vocals for the track. There's a genuinely dramatic backstory tangled up in this, too: Nash actually recalled getting the call from Stills asking him and Crosby to come add "voices for the choruses" on the track. What makes it extra loaded is that around this same period, Rita Coolidge left Stills for Graham Nash — a breakup widely cited as one of the contributing factors in the demise of CSNY. So you've got Stills' own ex-girlfriend and the man she left him for both singing backup, cheerfully, on his biggest solo hit. Some fans have even joked the track could practically be credited as a Crosby, Stills & Nash song given how much of the "supergroup" harmony sound made it onto Stills' solo cut. It's an enjoyable album, more so than "Manassas" was, but it's not a must hear record (which is the point of this collection!). Classic voice, but man is he lucky to have connected with Crosby & Nash (and sometimes Young). 2 stars, it's just average as hell outside the one monster song.

Definisjonen av midt på treet

Stephen who?? Never heard of him until now and this is exactly why I sound this journey. What genre is this? Touches on blues, rock, ballads and some even with a west end performative quality. Loved this. Missed him I cause I'm a Brit and being living under a rock obviously

Really enjoyed this.

There are quite a few good songs here. Not sure if I am the biggest Stills, Nash, and Crosby or whatever combination of all the names fan, but this one is pretty decent.

Folky, twangy rock

Oh, well. I liked the gospely choir. Too bad about the forgettable songs.

Du bon blues rock, avec une touche de gospel. J'ai l'impression que Stephen Stills est un peu surreprésenté sur cette liste...

Correct. On passe au prochain, assez de Stills. Pas assez de Young à date par contre.

Stephen Stills- Stephen Stills (1970) This was a game of 2 halves. All the good stuff seemed to be packed into side 1…Church, Old Times Good Times, Go Back Home , the last two with Hendrix and Clapton respectively. The 2nd half was let down with a couple of pretty bad inclusions: To A Flame and Black Queen. And then the weirdest and clunkiest transition between the last 2 songs on the album. Definition of a mixed bag ⭐️⭐️⭐️

some nice songs, not my kind of music

Fail to see what's interesting about this beyond the occasional jam. At best it was boring. At worst it felt indulgent and self-important. Don't need to hear it again.

I like that it doesn't sound like CSNY. I like the guitar crunch and the choir replacing CNY.

Well produced, but forgettable. Contains one of the worst guest solos I've heard. Stills himself positively suprised me with his playing.

Good album. Best song was Blackqueen.

What in the Isaac Hayes Curtis Mayfield Superfly Shaft Black Dynamite is Cherokee?! Glorious. I more a Neil Young guy but this is a solid 4 so far.

pretty standard folk rock. not super interesting

Great album Great players, prefer his solo albums to CSN

Not at all what I expected, so many different styles rolled into one album. Did enjoy though

This was different than I expected. However, nothing really stood out to me on it. Cool to learn it’s the only album featuring Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton though.

I thought this was a really nice easy listening album

This was good, but at the same time super forgettable, honestly I can remember Love the One You're With, but cannot tell you any of the other song names, or what they sounded like. Some of it was great, most of it was. Idk felt a bit soulless. Some of the other reviews on here do a way better job than what I would be able to convey here... So many features from so many different talented artists, that just felt like they were doing Stills a favor and having a bit of fun, nothing more. Hendrix is on Old Times Good Times which is kind of wild, and Stills is blasting organ over top of his playing lmfao. Also, that haircut is not good... I do like the giraffe though, super surreal looking.

What the hell is the advice given on Love The One You're With? Can't be with your spouse or significant other? Just get it on with whomever is within your vicinity. After all, it's natural, so it's not a bad thing. It's fine. I was initially whatevs, but got into it more as it played. I dunno about the Black Queen song. I like a lot of it fine, like it's not bad for what it is, which is largely a white guy doing not-white music, but doing it pretty well so it's not terribly offensive.

I might like SS the most out of the band. Solid album. Great voice. 3.75

Not bad but certainly not essential listening. Stephen Stills was the 3rd best member of CSNY.

achei calminho, mas não sei se colocaria pra ouvir de novo.

More folk rock! I don't know Stills much other than CSNY but Wiki says he was part of Buffalo Springfield too. Had no idea. It's... fine. I wholly recognize that I'm coming to this album 56 years after release, and much of this doesn't resonate with me. I fuck with them and the counterculture, but I'm generations off from this record. I do appreciate the moments where it veers towards hard rock, but folk rock just isn't my thing.

It was ok, but honestly kind of boring and everything was the same. Absolutely nothing stood out, but at the same time nothing was difficult to listen to. It is not an album that made me stop what I was doing and really listen. I only really marked one song as notable and that was go back home. Just scratching into a 3 star

Stills self titled comes with a lot of boxes checked that gets me into an album. 1. It’s got a cerfitified banger - love the one your with. A song that has fascinated me as long as I can remember. The ideal version, the message is extremely positive & it serves as a good theme for this 1001 album journey. With streaming we all choose what we want to enjoy, and typically it’s something we love. But that shouldn’t be the case, as in life you’re typically stuck with less than ideal scenarios so rather than going - meh I hate country or I only like punk, or god damn these boomers, find something you love about the music or at least try. I like that version. - however the song is just about Mr Stills trying to bang some lady who is on a business trip. But the congas during the chorus slap! 2. Songs ending with rocking extended jams. Jams when done right are the best time to hear a band loving what they do, and if you play an instrument and have had the opportunity to play with like minded people, doing so with limited guidelines is the apex music experience. Steve Stills got this done beautifully. (Even if it’s just him layering in instruments and not a live jam) 3. Uncredited (or at least not listed on the song title) legendary players joining for a song. We got both Clapton and Hendrix, that’s awesome. Not sure if it’s a 3 or a 4 but after reading a lot of silly hate from the reviews (although this is music for people that clap when a plane lands made me laugh and is correct) I’m giving it a soft 4, but with out that conga, it’s a 3.

didnt listen

Surprisingly boring After the opener, Love The One You're With, there's not much else to catch the attention

Moments of interest and excitement, but never really grabbed me. 3.5

Gear: Abyss DIANA MR Artwork: 🎸🦒❄️ Production: 🔉🤨🤏 Music: 😐🤷‍♂️😐 Rating: ☃️☃️/5

Enjoyed this - lots of nice moments - but kind of washed over me a bit after a while and not sure how often I’d return.

I remember this being better. Not much better, but better. This time it just struck me as throwaway with some pretty good moments, such as Jimi Hendrix on track 4.

A strong singer songwriter record with contributions from music legends

Not bad, but not my preferred listen.

Pre-listen review: this had better not be more hippie nonsense. Post-listen review: definitely a lot of hippie nonsense, but also this album starts off pretty strong, so it’s kinda in the middle for me.

Stills again. I liked it more than his other solo album I got here (that was actually more like a separate project I think). A couple of songs here were nice but towards the end the flow of the album got worse unfortunately 2/5

Pretty middling for me. Didn't dislike it, but it didn't win me over on first listen. There are decent tracks there. Solid songwriting chops. Just, meh

Church Black Queen We Are Not Helpless

Love the One You’re With Go Back Home Cherokee

Excellent, a revelation, baggy before baggy quality songs. A high foothills.

la guitarrra de love the one you're with me hace acordar mucho a canyon moon de harry styles.

lmao. #retire

Sweet, comfy, but lively folk rock. Didn’t feel drawn out or boring. Liked this even more than Manassas, I think.

Favorite track: We Are Not Helpless WAY funkier than I was expecting. The album cover doesn't do this justice! Quite enjoyed it.

It was aight.

Pretty alright

Didn’t even occur to me he’d have a solo album. First track is instantly recognizable. Good stuff.

Good album, cool album cover

Fun and jazzy, good vibes

Instantly likable album by a great singer/songwriter/musician!

I hadn’t heard any Stephen Stills solo stuff before, and I came away from this somewhat disappointed. Love The One You’re With is a classic that sets up the album brilliantly, but it’s followed up with… meh. The sound is a sort of blues rock with bits of gospel and it just underwhelms really. It’s not bad, but it is quite uninteresting and leaves little impression on me.

A perfect example of how an ensemble of incredible musicians does not a great album make (look at the ‘Personnel’ on its Wikipedia article). The one classic track, ‘Love the One You’re With’, is a pretty good folky/acoustic tune with gospel choir-style vocals, but it’s about the only memorable track here. I felt it was very much a by-the-numbers, pale imitation of CSNY (perhaps unsurprisingly). Nothing was bad exactly, and some of it was actually fairly good, but it all felt really insubstantial, like it was missing something, and that it could have been better. A disappointing 3 stars.

Bangin album tbf, sit yourself down stole the show imo. You can really see his previous relationships shine through the album and the grass isn’t always greener mentality that a lot of the songs take.
