That 70s English prog rock sound. As I observed in classic Rush from prior reviews, there's a fundamental silliness about some of it, but it's not boring, and set in a lush ass sonic landscape.

Really enjoyed this album - such an interesting fusion of various genres, ranging from rock to folk to more experimental sounds.

Unsurprisingly I have mixed feelings about this album, as it is anything but homogeneous. Firth Of Fifth is interesting. What are those time signatures? Wikipedia says 13/16, 15/16 and 2/4! Super cool! But the complexity brings with it a certain allovertheplaceness. It's a classical-feeling glam-sounding concept-y album with neat art and an ironic title. At the risk of sounding like every other album reviewer in the world, I must say I keep hearing bits of Pink Floyd here and there. It's almost freakishly similar to ELP's Pictures at an Exhibition in aura. Things I like: the complexity, the ambition, the wordplay in Aisle of Plenty, I don’t think it takes itself that seriously, some of the instrumentals (especially The Cinema Show), it got me interested enough to read more about it on Wikipedia, you could listen to it many times and still find interesting things you hadn’t noticed because it’s very varying in style, it doesn’t repeat itself, has everything Germ Free Adolescents lacks. Things I dislike: has a bit too much of everything Germ Free Adolescents lacks, it’s a bit all over the place, the vocals are kind of jarring in my ears and sound a bit like football supporters, feels like they’re doing this just for their own fun as a sport, none of the songs really got to me, slightly show-off-y at times. Strong 3.44 stars.

Ok album. Genesis was better on the 80s when Phil Collins did more of the leg work. This album felt like he was underutilized and they focused more on the instrumentals. 5.9/10

1. That guitar riff has it, and those vocals. Damn, going to enjoy this. 3. Firth of Fifth - that guitar solo is hot! Fuck, going to look into that. That's filthy, I love it! The rest isn't hitting as hard. Probably a 3 for me. Maybe 4 simply because they're more experienced instrument playing wise and lyrics. Peter Gabriel is great but being an 80s baby, always prefer Phil Collins singing for Genesis.
I knew none of these. I could hear elements of War of the Worlds and The Divine Comedy. Didn’t sound like it was from 1973!

Really uneven. Some good moments, but some really long, repetitive moments. Lyrics were also really rough in places.

If they took out all of the needless arpeggios this album would only be 30 minutes long and much better. Still, the parts that are good are really good and I found myself leaving this one on in the background for most of the day.

I know this band and this album are important in the timeline of "progressive rock," and there are a few bands in that subgenre I really like (e.g., ELP, Rush, Jethro Tull, Yes...and I know, I know, this is all loosely defined and highly subjective), but I just never clicked with Genesis. I gave this album a listen and, nah, just don't really like it.
I've always enjoyed this one, but I need to sit down and give it the attention it deserves. Not an album to be listened to in the background while doing other things.

I can get down with some British prog, but it sometimes looks rather quaint next to German kosmische. Genesis have never been a favourite of mine, and from memory I would have said 3/5. Happy to revisit it, and I enjoyed it more than expected. (The 2014 half-speed remastered vinyl sounds amazing btw.) Some of the tracks seem to think they are more stupendous than they are, confirming all the things people say about prog's pretentiousness. However, 90% of this record sounds great. I love the mixture of folk and classical influences (albeit superficial?) into rock. I even like most of the silly whimsical lyrics. 4/5
Not for me
Had a much more rock sound than I expected. Quite few songs are nice but some are too long and get tiresome.
I didn't particularly like the album, but it was mostly just crazy to hear Collins, Gabriel, and Rutherford playing long operatic prog rock. It seemed worlds away from their "Invisible Touch" cashing in.
A proper classic! First 3 songs are incredible, but the album is sort of let down by the subsequent songs.

Musically sound, very intricate. You forget just how talented this group is. Not my favorite Genesis album, but definitely one most prog-rock Genesis fans would love.

Its almost okay, but it just gets weird for most of the songs. Can see where they turn into a good band eventually but its not there yet.
I have never listened to early Genesis. I did not expect this. Still there were some rocking bit in between the more surreal ones.
Utter shit

The first track was a hoot. I mean..... it's almost a parody of the worst excesses of 70s prog. Something Bill Bailey would come up with. Great musicianship though. the joke wore thin by the end.....and it wasn't meant to be a joke in the first place. But I enjoyed it anyway

I'm not sure why, but I expected to hate this. I actually quite enjoyed it, but wouldn't listen again.
First off the opener at around 1:20 is definitely a "lo-fi hip-hop chill beats to study and relax to" break down so that got me pretty hype. Second off, I'm not really a big prog rock fan so it was kind of downhill from there. I would not say this album was a total wash though because some of those synth sounds are so sick and I very much love big retro synth sound. I think my problem with this album's particular style of prog rock is that the songs get so epic and huge so quickly and then we've still got like 10 minutes to go of these sweeping guitar licks and I just get listener fatigue real quick, which made me start losing interest in the fantasy whimsy of the lyrics. Not for me, but Phil Collins rules.

Sorpresa total. No coneixia aquest disc i m'ha semblat molt interessant. Dens i recarregat, necessitarà d'unes quantes escoltes més per poder fer-ne un veredicte just. Però la primera ha estat impactant i m'ha provocat una molt bona impressió. I no m'ho esperava. No sé per què tenia els Genesis com un grup poc interessant, però veig que al menys l'època Peter Gabriel mereix ser explorada.

Cool prog rock from the early 70s. Reminiscent of Rush. Phil Colins' performance on this album is unlike any of his solo works.
How they sing is much different than I expected. And the guitar has a filter I've never heard before, and they included an organ in a few of the songs.

Yea, not feeling it...
Really enjoyed this one - interesting to see early prog prog which I don't often listen to. Clearly see the influence on more modern prog I do like. Blending track by track of old medieval sounds, with synthesizers of the 70s made for real interesting sound. I specifically found myself finding this album sounding a lot like the risk of rain soundtrack at times. Interesting to learn about the americanization of england themes, but did not follow lyrics as closely as music.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Peter Gabriel read the Canterbury Tales and T.S. Eliot over and over? Prog Rock. Prog rock happens. Why do I love prog rock so much? Is it how it feels cinematic? Like there's a camera panning around an open vista in your mind. Is it the wizards? The offbeat references and inscrutable lyrics? All I know is that this is gorgeous. Plus you can never go wrong with Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins (whose drumming is legend tier and essential to this album's flow) and Mike "and the mechanics" Rutherford. These guys are no damn joke. It's not often a supergroup exists before any of its members become famous. I might just need to listen to more genesis.

Genesis is Phil Collins' band. This is their fifth album. Its seen as a classic progrock album now, although it had mixed reviews when it was released. Several really long, but cool songs.

Excellent album. I like early Genesis - Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is one of my all-time top 10 albums - but I haven't listened to this one a lot. Adding it to my regular playlist. 4 stars.

Incredible music, sometimes weird, often haunting... And the lyrics tell a really interesting tale. The whole album has an experimental feel, which often appeals to me. Easy five-star rating.

I do not vibe with prog rock. A lot of it blended together and didn’t really keep my interest. There were some parts that were decent but I couldn’t name them specifically. I’m sure it makes sense to others but not me.
One of my favourite albums, without a hit song. So much creativity, without being just totally wierd.

Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, and a slew of Hall-of-Fame-worthy musicians in the prog band that launched them all to stardom produced a singularly weird and schizophrenic record even for prog. From track one, this thing is a wandering mess. Maybe that's why I found myself mostly ignoring it. The lack of a consistent through-line within a single song made my brain just sort of shut off.
Liked it more than I thought I would, really interesting album. It’s easy to forget that genesis started off doing art rock like this, I honestly prefer way more than the direction Phil Collins took them later on
I'm only really familiar with Phil Collins-led Genesis (mom likes "A Trick of the Tail"). It's amazing to see they started as an extremely proggy-Rush-ish band and went into 80s pop later. It's not bad, just a little pretentious and not for me that much. Favorite tracks: "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight", "The Battle of Epping Forest"
Hey, this was actually quite nice! Thought I would find it dull, but I really enjoyed the melodic lines for most of the songs.
Seems like average prog noodling. Fine as a soundtrack, but if you want to do the noodling thing at least commit to a silly concept or 20-plus-minute opus. Otherwise you end up with a pop record for people who claim not to like pop. To be fair, this is much looser than your typical pop project. Whether that's good or bad is up to the listener.
I prefer 80's Genesis
I have a real soft spot for this kind of wanky 70s prog. It's overblown, nerdy and insists upon itself but somehow rather than hate it I absolutely love it. Could listen to this style all day in the background at work (and have many times). Actually, I'll probably spend the rest of the day listening to prog. 5/5.
