Bowie is the four B's of my early childhood musical education along with The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Beethoven. I feel like he's been with me all along during when I have felt a part of humanity or alienated from it. Fortunately, music has always been an amazing way to bridge the gap between those two worlds for me.
Favorite line:
My brain hurt like a warehouse
It had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things
To store everything in there
And all the fat-skinny people, and all the tall-short people
And all the nobody people, and all the somebody people
I never thought I'd need so many people
This is not my all time favorite Zeppelin album, but the sound here gets under my skin and into my bones. I found myself dancing and singing along even though I don't really know all the words. Caught for the first time the references to Mordor and Gollum in Ramble On.
I actually really enjoyed the guitar work on this album. I know Neil Young is a large proponent of experiencing music either love or on albums so that instead of listening to tracks of a few minutes and then moving on, you can instead enter that state of being in it. After a couple of times through the album I got lost in it. And I even repeated that final ten minute track so I could get lost in it. It's always lovely when I can take a break from my own mind.
Zoe doesn't understand why this would necessarily have to be something people must listen to before they die. I was only her age when it came out, and many of these tracks transport me right back to middle school. I actually relistened to this album recently and still enjoy it, though it is not really my jam. And I am curious about the historical relevance and influence of this album.
Pretty smooth album. Love the rhythm and bass intro and soul sampling and the hopeful messaging. I will definitely listen to more.
I had a lot of mixed feelings about this album. I didn't find it as musically interesting as Faith, but I didn't not enjoy listening to it. On the second run, there were a couple songs I could get into, mostly the faster placed ones. Overall it felt like Adult lite Gospel Jazz, and it has a very soul searching, confessional feel to it. It made me more interested in George Michael as a person, but there wasn't anything that really resonated with me or my experience. I admire that he tried to grow as an artist after Faith, which was a phenomenon having gone seven times platinum.
I actually really enjoyed this album. The soundscapes were soothing but also musically interesting enough to not let my mind wander too far. I have only ever encountered Brian Eno as a producer for others, and in that capacity I believe that folks of our generation are perhaps have encountered his influence even beyond our own realization in music and perhaps even film. Will definitely listen to this album and artist again.
I used to do dramatic readings of this album's lyrics when I was a Freshman in college, but are classics and while I don't always feel precisely what is expressed in these songs, my adolescence was off frustration and anger and the desire to do something meaningful. Trent has really evolved has a significant producer of sound. And I think it's interesting that we listened to him right after Brian Eno. I know all of us who have grown up with John Williams scores can attest to our emotional connection to sounds and images and feelings. I was reading an article about how sound influenced or emotional reactions to content. Classic album, I had a couple of early NIN albums, I will definitely listen to more.
I enjoyed this album. More of a blend of rock with other than the standard rock band instrumentation. Wondering about the development of and relationship to prog rock.
I love the sound and the energy of Motorhead's music. I find that I mostly don't know what they are singing about, but I wonder how much it matters. Love the guitar solos.
I think I have outgrown punk a little over these many years, but the Clash remains one of my favorite of the genre
I've listened to the album before. There are a few tracks I really enjoy, but I'm not overly enjoying Jay-Z as a rapper here. I've heard that this album is perhaps a little more commercial than his other releases. And also that his rapping on other albums such as the Black Album are more impressive. Overall I enjoyed the album, but it set me on a quest for something a little more interesting.
This is definitely a familiar album for me. My brother introduced me to the more experimental sounds of Sonic Youth in high school and it has paved the way for my love of indie rock which is where I dwell most often.
I love the sound and energy of this album, makes me want to move. Brings me back to the Navy years when I used to run to it
I always want to enjoy Elvis Costello albums more than I think I will. And then I always do in spite of my own overthinking it.
Very much enjoyed the Bob Marley. Already a fan
I went ahead and listened to parachutes yesterday already. I really enjoyed those first two coldplay albums and I listened to them often while I was in the Navy and on those long drives between Ohio and Virginia. They were great albums for getting lost in and singing along with unintelligible falsetto. Their third album didn't strike a chord with me and so I stopped following them. Their lyrics always seemed like they were trying to be deeper than they actually were. I think that's often the way with popular music. Coming back to them twenty years later I have to say I much prefer the sound of parachutes over a rush of blood to the head. Though, I was carrying a torch for a green eyed lover at the time.
Definitely. Prefer this first album to their sophomore effort. Still a lot of songs that make me sing along. Gets a little show toward the end.
I've heard this album before. I enjoy it. It was mellow but I believe interesting enough to reward repeat listening s.
Phenomenal. This is the type of punk that I really enjoy. It's like punk meets funk. The bass line alone makes me want to pick up my bass and play. I wish I had the time. This album has been recommended to me by more than a few friends who are musicians and music afficionados.
This was a fun album. Classic rock is a place I can easily abide. I liked the blues stuff and the bluegrass stuff. A good mix of good sound. It was a little long
Not wholly unenjoyable, but a little repetitive and there were a couple of songs that were as little cringey. I'll probably not come back to it any time soon. I'll stick with the Smiths
I enjoyed this. I'm going to look more into New Order, but I am interested in their development after Joy Division. I might go back to the beginning.
I didn't know any of these songs so the first listen was okay, but the album kind of grew on me on the second run
Surreal. Felt Eno inspired. This is s Bowie album I've never heard.
I have never listened to early Genesis. I did not expect this. Still there were some rocking bit in between the more surreal ones.
Totally dug this. Proto punk is definitely my thing.
Fun and familiar. Always love the bass
Brings me back to college. I enjoyed this album.
Brings me right back to high school and college.
Some great songs on here. Stevie was a lot funkier than I previously believed.
I knew some of these tracks. Definitely enjoyed the big band sound
Overall enjoyable, not super interesting
Brings back memories, but I really couldn't into it. Maybe was my Headspace. The one voice was a little too needling.
Much more fun than I expected.
Enjoyable. Brought me back to the nineties. Didn't totally vibe with it, but that could easily change.
I always enjoyed this album. Wasn't much of a metalhead at 14, but this is pretty much my access point for appreciation of it.
I had a harder time getting into this than I thought I would. Interesting that this stands out a little against a lot of other Brazilian music and that bossa nova style. I wish I could understand the lyrics. I might have to relisten to really start to feel it
Love it. I enjoy the vibe of emotionally complex eighties music. I was only ten when this album came out, and I like to think that I have matured some. But it still feels familiar
Great album. Brings back a lot of memories. Not my favorite Jazz Style.
Never heard this before. It was enjoyable, but hasn't quite hooked me yet.
The layers and textures of this album is so lovely. It's the type of album I could drive around with around with for weeks and have a different experience through every listen. Until I actually start to understand the lyrics and feel myself growing into it.
Always enjoy the godfather of soul, but the recording made it hard to hear him. Though listening to the audience at the Apollo Theater was fun. I would have had to be there.
Beautiful and soothing. A much appreciated sojourn.
Just what I needed for the day.
Interesting. I never heard of this artist but can see why he was influential
Brings me back to the good old fourth grade days.
I only heard this album for the first time a couple of years ago, but when I heard it I instantly loved it. I totally dig the energy and musicality of this group. Always a rewarding listen
What a trippy album! There are parts of this that I really did. Some of it because it is faintly reminiscent of the Beatles. But oy, some of this was really awful. But mostly pretty chill. I would listen to this again.
This one really didn't hit me.
I might give this relisten. I think it might be more rewarding after reading the lyrics.
Actually really groovy. Bluesy, mellow rock.
Interesting. Did not expect the Iron Man cover from the Lovefool band. There more here than meets the eye.
One of my all time favorites. Hey always makes me want to pick up my bass.
Still wrapping my brain around Casanova. What an eccentric performance. But every once in awhile it reminded me of other concept albums like Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I laughed when he kept going on about dogs and horses having their day or whatnot.
I don't know if I ever listened to this album, but I know every song. Iconic
Very interesting and soothing
I would give this another listen.
Bizarre, but strangely soothing
I did not enjoy this. I felt like they were trying too hard.
Entrancing. I wonder how much this type of music is created for direct listening or background listening
Enjoyable, but wasn't in the mood.
I had this album in college. I never really got into it.
I would listen to this again. It was pretty chill while I prepped dinner.
I actually really enjoyed this
Very Meta making music inspired by music inspired by art. But mostly it just made me want to listen to Mussorgsky. They really love those synthesis.
