I stand on principle: I hear Neal Young -> instant 1 star. I loved albums from bad singers. At least they had something to say with creative lyrics. I loved stripped down/raw/(fill in next cliche here) albums because they had still some creative energy and some surprising songwriting. I think I loved some albums with a violin thrown in the middle of a track because it added something meaningful to a song. But this one takes the cake. Checks all the boxes without any redeeming feature. Bland, boring, average everything. And that god awful voice saying the most uninteresting words. And theres a violin screeching the same fucking high pitched note on Running Dry. Props to the sound engineer to had to endure that. Oddly enough, I've heard worse Neil Young albums. An extra 0.5 points for the parts where he shuts up and the band just jams. 1.5 total which I will round DOWN to 1 out of spite.

that voice ... i just can't.
meh
Outstanding! I love Jim Steinman's over the top, theatrical way of writing. It's like listening to a movie. A silly one, granted, but the experience is always dramatic and such a thrill ride. To be honest, the album could have had white noise after the title track and my score would have been the same. Absolute beast: Bat out of hell Also awesome: You took the words tight out of my mouth
i don't get it. not my thing

1.5 - madchester stuff. nice but not my thing
3.5 - this is great. loads of charm and great atmosphere. awesome tunes
elevator music
masterpiece!
ok i guess. proto punk
dated noise pop. gets really tiring after a while. not for me
nice vocal harmonies. in the second half it sort of looses focus. the first couple of songs are good: 5D and spaceman
4.5 - wow such incredible energy. great tunes and electric atmosphere. amazing
I guess it's all right. most songs give me a sheryl crow wibe, but with twangy guitars. the hit (can't let go) is ok. not my thing, but it's not terrible either
psychedelic blues. great musicianship. I like the tracks where clapton sings lead. also appreciate that they kept it to 3 min songs instead of the usual never ending improv sessions. not an every day listen, but it does the job. 2.5
2.5 - essential blues right here. band is so tight, it's amazing. hoochie coochie man is the standout for me.
enjoyable but it's not my thing. i guess you have to be in the mood for some chill bossa nova
3.5 - what an awesome album. white riot, police and thieves and janie jones are great tracks. half a star off for some of the filler in the second half of the album. but overall a very powerful message and delivery.
ok, i guess. it's fine but i can't see myself coming back to it in the future
what an absolute jewel. come together, something, oh darling, here comes the sun, golden slumbers/carry that weight, the end. the early part of the medley doesn't do it for me (sun king and mr mustard) and i think "i want you" drags on for a bit too long. i was tempted to score it 4.5 because of these, but the good parts are too good. 5 stars. incredible.
3.5 - Prophet's Song and Bohemian Rhapsody are immense. Extraordinary composition, arrangement and production. john deacon is a groove machine with You're my Best Friend and Love of My life is one of the best ballads ever. Still, a few songs don't really do it for me: Sweet Lady, Seaside Rendezvous, Good Company, In Love with my Car, 39 . They're ok but I wouldn't come back to them.
1.5 - mostly bland and boring. not my thing. 0.5 for I Sang Dixie which is ok
funky and soul bowie. an enjoyable listen, flows nicely. no stand out songs though.
Massive album. Extremely well produced and written. Sooo much groove and swing in the rhythm section. Down picking riff master Hetfield outdid himself on this one. All the riffs are classics at this point. They have punch, power and they hook you instantly. Solos are melodic and well thought out never too much and always complement the songs. Ver very well put together piece of music. Some filler (eg Holier than thou or The struggle within), but even that doesn't detract from the overall quality.
2.5 - overall enjoyable. does get quite repetitive and all the songs seems pretty much the same. lyrics are funny, though.
1.5 - first half is almost unlistenable. second half (the 18 min song) has it's good parts. I would not come back to this
Title track is by far the best song on the album. What a great tune. That drum beat is amazing. I also liked Cherish. Makes me think of True Blue. The second half of the album doesn't do it for me.
not good, not terrible. kind of dated sound (80s drum machines and synths with tons of reverb), but it still works as background music. all the songs blend into each other.
1.5 - pretty dull melodies, basic lyrics. may have been good for its day. nothing stands out.
3.5 - I never knew the band before this. There's a lot to like here. Radiohead meets james bond meets peter gabriel. Favourite tunes: Starlings, Grounds for divorce, An audience with the pope, The fix, One day like this
this album is hilarious. fight for your right, brass monkey, slow and low, no sleep till brooklyn, rhymin and stealin
2.5 - Little wing and a lot of filler
so this is how trip hop started. good album. really enjoyed the atmosphere and the samples. great beats and vocals. fav tracks: Safe from harm, Daydreaming
good production, but not my thing
2.5 - half a point extra for "this town..". i love that song the rest of the album sounds kind of the same
might have been good when it came out, but for me now it's completely boring
very good album. gently delivering powerful lyrics and does not pull any punches on social issues. great songs: fast car, behind the wall
not bad, but kind of the same thing over and over.
Outstanding! I love Jim Steinman's over the top, theatrical way of writing. It's like listening to a movie. A silly one, granted, but the experience is always dramatic and such a thrill ride. To be honest, the album could have had white noise after the title track and my score would have been the same. Absolute beast: Bat out of hell Also awesome: You took the words tight out of my mouth
dated and boring
very good record. powerful storytelling and so much emotion Sam Stone - wow, this one hits so hard. I was listening to the album in the background not really noticing anything when THAT lyric caught me right in the head: "There's a hole in daddy's arm, where all the money goes". holy fuck what a song. Paradise tells a heartbreaking story as well. great song.
1.5 - the covers are interesting, but the rest os not for me
surprisingly catchy
generic brit pop
1.5
this thing is huge. haven't made it through the whole thing yet. just about 40ish songs tracks: reno dakota, luckiest guy on the lower east side, book of love, it's a crime, busby berkeley dreams, acoustic guitar
this feel modern even today. great blend of styles. tracks: good times roll, best friends girl, moving in stereo
1.5
2.5 for cry to me
2.5 for the awesome guitar playing
Surprise! You're dead Woodpecker from mars War pigs
Metal guru Slider
2 5 Moving away from the pulse beat
Avalanche Famous blue raincoat
2.5 this sounds really nice
side 1 is awesome. motherless children, get ready, i shot the sheriff side 2 - mellow and bland. not bad, but also nothing i'd come back to
listenable, but not something i'd come back to
Let's keep it on the level When I walked away from you I turned my back on the devil Turned my back on the angel, too They oughta give my heart a medal For letting go of you. When I turned my back on the devil Turned my back on the angel, too At first I thought you would need to be in the mood to listen to this. But this album just stopped me in my tracks no matter what I was doing. There's something about Cohen that just grabs me and makes me listen. The coolest dude ever. The lyrics and that amazing growling voice hit so hard. The melodies are heartbreaking. Instrumentation is surprisingly varied for each song, but it's never too much. Just enough to complement and amplify the song and the words. What a way to go, Mr Cohen. Stand outs: You want it darker, On the level, Leaving the table, Traveling light, Treaty (both versions)
classic! You Make Me Feel So Young It Happened in Monterey Makin' Whoopee I've Got You Under My Skin
Wow, that first song is amazing
3 stars for "I know it's over". The rest is nothing I'd come back to, but this one really hits hard.
3.5
Love vigilantees
first half is a monster!
Maybe it's because of personal bias because I grew up with Bad and Dangerous, but Thriller never did it for me. It was before my time. On the following albums there's more of MJ and less and less of Quincy Jones. I prefer it when Michael is at the helm. Sure, the three songs in the middle are absolute monsters plus I've always had a soft spot for Human Nature. But everything else on the album doesn't live up to the big 3 (Thriller, Beat it, Billie Jean).
1.5 Becomes hard to listen to after the first couple of songs.
4 for johnny marr's guitar playing and arrangements. 0 for morrissey. Averages out to a 2. How I wish there was an an instrumental version so I can enjoy the band in peace without that pretentious twat howling all over the place.
could not make it through till the end
Solsbury Hill is sublime. There's so much joy and energy there. I can listen to it anytime and it always works. Here Comes the Flood hits like a punch in the gut (btw, brilliant use of this song in The Americans soundtrack)
oh wow, this was a rollercoaster ride. smooth, funky, punkish, jazzy, beats galore. I had no idea this album was this entertaining. granted, it's on a downward slope towards the second half, but still good enough for me. definitely did not expect groovy instrumental tracks on a rap album: Sabrosa, Ricky's theme and even Flute Loop for the most part. added bonus: so THIS is where the Prodigy got the sample for funky shit :). It caught me completely by surprise in the middle of Root Down this album is a keeper. goes in the collection
For the life of me I don't get what the big deal is with this album. Yeah, ok, those were innovative recording techniques for 1966. They layered a lot of instruments and there's a theremin in there, yay! Give me Phil Spector's wall of sound any day if the goal is to stuff an entire horn orchestra on a track. For me the songs just drag on and on with the same mid to low tempo, same vocal lines and harmonies. No power, no real groove. The entire sound is really dated. It's not bad, it's just ...meh. But I guess it should deserve some credit since (for some reason) it influenced every musician alive at that time. If McCartney felt inspired and wanted to out do himself because of Pet Sounds, then I guess it does deserves some credit. We got Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road out of this, so no a bad deal. Favorite track: Sloop John B
Tracks: The Healer I'm in the mood Sally Mae
two monster songs. the rest of the album is just ok
Pagan poetry is one of the best songs I've ever heard
