A fantastic album that’s always fun to listen to, which is partially why I picked it for my album. This was really my third choice as the first two were already selected. I felt the list lacked a lot of strong modern rap music that has shaped modern culture. This was my choice as for me it’s a culmination of the gangster rap and lyrical conscious rap by Gibbs mixed with funky and soulful best productions of Madlib. This album flows so smoothly and its biggest drawbacks to me is some of the skit portions at the end of songs. Other than that it has impeccable features from older and newer artists to really make this a great album of the past and future. O’Doyle rules 9.3/10

Welp the band name didn’t pan out long term. The album is pretty decent. Hardcore prog metal that’s kind of like a more intense tool. Worst part of this album was the singer with the intense yelling. If this is a full instrumental or he toned it down a little this album would have some good replay value but that’s not the case. Instead it’s an album that has its moments but not something I’d choose over some other prog rock metal bands. 6.4/10

Probably a bit too modern to be on this list of user favorite albums but yet here we are. A pretty good pop album. The singer has good range and is a blend of Leon, Taylor Swift, Kesha and Adele. Not as talented as some on that list but the influence in this album is obvious. The album has fun pop anthem female empowerment songs and that’s enough to build a following and sometimes plenty of critics. Nice average pop album. Doubt I’ll revisit it though. 5.5/10

Feel like a lot of the user albums are more of the nostalgic music people listened to a lot growing up. I never heard of this album before but I’d imagine if I grew up in the 80s this would be a popular one. To me this was some boy band solo artist 80s new wave stuff that was pretty dull and didn’t have any of the flair of the better new wave music. 4.3/10

Now this is a nice start to the user albums. An unknown indie project that is as much funk as it is chill. This was a pretty solid album that I never heard of before and will revisit again. A nice modern take on indie music that blends genres with different styles. 6.9(nice)/10

This is some interesting prog art rock instrumental combo album. This is definitely a complex album and there were parts that I thought were peculiar while others I enjoyed listening to. This isn’t something I would revisit but it was definitely interesting. 5.0/10
Sublime

One of the best and most nostalgic albums of the 90s. It’s impossible to ignore how good sublime was at making songs that felt like summer. This album is a bit long on the back end but it has some of the best hits alternative has seen and they’ve held up over the years. 7.8/10

This was some decent rock punk music. Definitely not as hardcore as some of their other albums or other punk bands but that’s what made this album more enjoyable. Less thrash and more technique in the instrumentals always makes me enjoy the punk sound more. this was decent but not great. 6.2/10

If I grew up in the 70s I could see how I’d really enjoy this deeper cut band of diverse rock. Over time it seems they’ve become more unknown and would definitely be considered underrated. They don’t do anything that’s too crazy or different but this album has a few different styles of rock that show the bands talent. Overall it was pretty good and unfortunate this band isn’t more popular. 6.7/10

This was a pretty wild album. From the album cover I assumed it was going to be kind of trash. Then when it started it and I had my bootcut jeans on and spiked my hair and rocked out. This is the perfect music for your dive bar. It’s not great but it has its moments where it’s plenty of fun. This gives Nickelback a run for their money. 6.4/10

This was a pretty solid album. Not sure if I’d call it a punk album. There were only a couple of songs that felt somewhat punk and also I actually liked it compared to most punk albums. Maybe it’s modern punk then because some of the songs were more typical to a indie rock. The Irish accent in the songs actually made it stronger and gave it some character in the story. Overall I’d revisit it and good choice. 7.0/10

Not shocked to see a Bon Iver album on the user submitted list. He’s definitely one of the more iconic modern artists with his unique style. This album I wouldn’t say is his best but it’s definitely one I like and also very experimental. Overall this is a catchy and brilliantly artistic album that deserves many re-listens. 8.2/10

One of the best albums of so many people’s childhood/teens/early adulthood . Blink 182 was able to capture so many people with their garage punk rock sound. This album has at least 4 major hits and emus easily their best album. Everything about growing up in the late 90s early 00s can be heard through this album. A nostalgic album that still rocks hard today. 8.4/10

Pretty solid 80s album by one of the biggest bands at the time. The user list is basically just everyone’s favorite albums from the times they grew up listening to a lot of music. This 80s pop album was probably immense when it came out. I don’t hear much of it now but overall it’s pretty good nothing really bad about it but not sure how much I’d revisit it. 6.5/10

This was fine to me. Nothing really amazing, just seemed like a hipster album with a story intertwined. I’d say that the devemberists are one modern band in a style of music I like but none of their songs have really wowed me. Doubtful this would be revisited but it’s not bad. 6.1/10

If you’re listening to this and wondering what does any of this mean, then you perfectly understand what makes Ann Arbor great and awful at the same time. Mix in the quirky ness of weird comedy in the 00s, 5 artists from U of M and you get this album. It’s easy to see exactly why they didn’t maintain their popularity as the quirky comedy trope died in the 00s.
And lastly, Go Green! Biased rating but this is rough. 2.5/10

This was a nice retro album. It didn’t feel too prog rock like and more stunted to an instrumental 70s classic rock. Overall it was pretty good, and I listened to it several times as it was pretty easy going. None of the songs were bad. I didn’t find myself wanting to listen to any one specifically but they flowed together quite well. 6.3/10

Listening to this and I felt like it was a bit ahead of its time in comparison to the 00s and 2010s alternative. This is classified as power pop which is an interesting take on it. I don’t find it very poppy but it has upbeat instrumentals and the lyrics are pretty good. I found this to have a range of styles and sound that resembled some modern bands. If they came out with this album now they’d probably be bigger than when grunge ruled music. 7.0/10

This was my first choice of albums to add to the user list but somebody else beat me to it. How one of the ingenious and creative rap albums of all time didn’t make it in the original list I will not know but this album is amazing. The production mixed with MF DOOMs lyrics make this album like a rap version of kind of blue. It’s so well done and innovative that nothing compares to it. RIP DOOM 9.3/10

This also had me. The first song with Curtis mayfield was actually pretty decent. I thought it was going to be a funky pop album. And then every other song proved me wrong. This was something that really confused me. Not sure what most of these songs were but to me they were bad. This is a never revisit album for me. 2.4/10

They’ve had better albums but this one was still alright. I never loved death cab but they made some popular indie alt music in the 2000s. Overall this was what happens when you have too much talent but nothing to write songs about. Some of these songs just felt like they were talking about whatever they saw. Good catchy indie pop but nothing amazing. 6.2/10

This feels like a lot of the modern pop music that I’ve been forced to listen by my SO however this one is a bit less up beat and more melodramatic. Something about foreign artists that have good vocals that really enjoy having a melancholy style of music. I’d be more inclined to listen to Benee or some other pop artists than this album. It wasn’t terrible, but it’s just not my taste. 5.3/10

Jimmy Buffett

We lost a legend when we lost Jimmy Buffett. The man that made the island life so cool. This album is great. It’s not the poppy Jimmy Buffett, just the laid back guy with the island sound. The back half of this album is great and has some classics. I’ll listen to this album along with many other Buffett albums whenever I want to escape or am escaping to an easier life. 8.4/10
The Lumineers

I really enjoy the style the lumineers have. It’s perfect for all the modern day hipsters. Aside from that they make good folk pop music and it’s enjoyable to drive and listen to their albums. This one is a good example of that easy and upbeat lyrics. Catchy tunes and choruses. All around fun stuff. 7.2/10

What’s better than 1000 gecs, 10,000 gecs? Not too sure if any amount of gecs is considered great but some people love these guys. Maybe I’m just getting older and don’t know what good music is anymore. Or maybe it’s the kids who are wrong. Either way This is not for me. 4.1/10
Procol Harum

Procol harum is more interesting in name than they are in their sound. I’ve always felt they were the more boring side of prog rock. This album isn’t much different. It’s a softer rock style that seems flat and not too diverse in range. The album blended together and it went through a few times before I realized it’s being repeated. All in all not bad but just way better options in the late 60s. 6.0/10
John Mayer

This album in 06 was pretty huge. John Mayer was able to combine beautiful guitar work with pretty simple pop music. None of it is that deep, breakup songs. Love songs anti ware songs but it’s done in a simple and tasteful way that can enjoyed today. Overall this is a solid album and a classic from the 00s. 7.5/10

This was like if you had Pink Floyd and genesis combine for an album. It was perfectly in the mix of prog rock and 80s pop rock. It wasn’t bad or anything but I think being in the middle with their sound made it less appealing than going one way or another. Overall it was okay. Nothing great but the sound was familiar. 6.7/10

This was a pretty average alt rock album. Some of the songs sounded vaguely familiar but it was hard to say where I heard them before. This wasn’t anything amazing from the alt rock standards and it blends nicely with other 00s music. This gets the job done but it’s not something I’d be rushing back to listen to. 6.3/10
Tame Impala

It was shocking to me that this album wasn’t on the original list. It’s one of the biggest and best albums from the 10s. Whoever added this made the right choice. I do love this album. I used to listen to this all the time. I have found myself listening to it a bit less the past few years but it’s still a fantastic album that I’ll listen to whenever. It still is great and the pop synth beats are great. 9.0/10

Now this is an old school album that probably should have been on the original list. I’ve heard of Patti labelle and heard lady marmalade many times before but really this whole album was impressive. Was shocked that this is actually a trio and not just Patti by herself. The range on the songs while also being funky and soulful was great. This is a great add and one I would revisit. 7.6/10

Sampras second album is a masterfully produced and fantastic composition of an album. I prefer Sampras first album but this one is also still excellent. He has a unique sound of modern production with soulful and strong lyricism. I will listen to both of his albums but the first one just a bit more than this one. 8.3/10

This was a rough album to get through. Not sure if I enjoyed any of the songs on this one. It was something that felt like garage punk and alternative metal mixed but without any of the positives. The lyricism was definitely weird and the instrumentals weren’t catchy or impressive at all. 2.6/10

in a world with enough silly pop music this album somehow has avoided me my whole life up until now. This isn’t bad it’s just generic mid 00s pop music and I’ve heard that stuff growing up. This one was a brit pop album so that’s probably why I never heard it but I’m not going to revisit this. It’s not terrible just not for me. 4.0/10

What if gangster rap was done by a poet. Well then you get this album. It’s full of street references and clearly appeals to a certain demographic. Mustafa a message is good and understandable but the way it’s presented falls a bit short with the soft tone and chill instrumentals. 4.5/10

Korn is one of those bands that didn’t pull any punches with the music they made. Intense, vulgar, and graphic lyrics are present in this album and that can definitely deter some people. However, music like this is life to some people. These harsh realities are what people don’t want to hear when they listen to music. Korn didn’t care their hardcore nu metal sound is the perfect way to implement their dark lyrics. It’s a well done album and there are some pretty solid songs on this album. Whenever I’m in the mood korn can be a good listen. 6.8/10

This was an alright album. I’d say better than the last eels album but a lot of the songs on this didn’t stick out in any memorable way. It was a well produced album with good instruments it just fell a little short of me capturing the essence of what other people find great it in. Overall it’s fine but I wouldn’t revisit it. 5.8/10

Not quite sure how I’m supposed to interpret an album that is supposed to be known for its song stories when I can’t understand the lyrics. Listened and moving on. 2.0/10

An absolute manger of an album. Weezer made Pinkerton for the music nerds but made the Blue album for everyone else. The songs are quick catchy and fun. The album is relatively short and quick but it’s pretty exceptional. A great choice for the list and should’ve been on the original. Either way this is Weezers best album and really a top album from the 90s. It still is great. 8.6/10
The Jesus Lizard

This was a pretty odd album. Being in a genre called noise rock sums it up pretty well. Not sure why a disjointed muddled sound would be considered a good idea yet the mates of the Jesus lizard thought it would be. I couldn’t get into this album. It was messy (probably intentionally). 4.7/10

This was a pretty decent album. It’s like if Bruce Springsteen made modern alternative music with an Americana style. The album cover definitely threw me off a bit but I thought the instrumentals and lyrics were actually quite good. Based on how it’s rated I’m shocked it isn’t more talked about or popular. I would revisit this one. 7.1/10

As much as I like Bruce’s music a 2 hour live album of songs that have pretty much already been covered is a bit redundant for this list. I’m starting to think the user albums are half albums people like and half people just making others suffer. This was a decent live album lots of good instrumental solos that were nice but the songs were already visited. 6.0/10
Garbage

A decent album by the hilariously named Garbage. I’ve heard of a few of these songs before mainly in movies but this whole album was not that bad. Pretty shocked it was nominated for album of the year so not sure if it was a down year or the Grammys used to have taste outside of the top 40s. To me there’s better 90s alternative out there. This was a bit too upbeat yet trying to be edgy for me. I’d rather have more hardcore instrumentals with these lyrics. 5.9/10
Childish Gambino

This was a fantastic album and one I’ve listened to dozens of times before. Gambino was one of my favorite artists in the 10s and this album is exactly that is. This album wasn’t as pop rap as his previous albums and not as experimental and R&B as his most recent two. It’s got the right blend of soulful production with catchy, gimmicky rap lines. The only draw back of this album was it was a bit long and some songs didn’t fit into play as much but overall this is exceptional and I’ll continue to listen to it. 8.6/10
The Upsetters

This is the type of music I wish I was able to find more often. Just some funky fun reggae music that is so smooth and fun to listen to. Aside from Bob Marley I’ve found that reggae is either hit or miss but when it hits it’s oh so good. This album was a pleasant experience and I enjoyed it and listened to some more of the upsetters after. 7.2/10

This album had all the makings to be great but it really felt incredibly average. The instrumentals were fun and upbeat but also very timid. The lyrics were pretty uneventful and the songs that were catchy made little sense. Overall it failed to stand out. Was nothing special to me. 5.5/10

I would imagine I would prefer a funk metal album with heavy bass lines more than a traditional metal album but this did not flow well for me. Part of it was the lyricism just didn’t fit for me and t was hard to enjoy. The other part was it starts off so abruptly odd that it was hard for me to recover and enjoy it as it progressed. Not a likely return but not terrible. 4.6/10
Men I Trust

This wasn’t much of a jazz album so whatever oncle is that had a big impact on the sound. The singer was very chill and soft which made it easy to listen to but the songs blended together and before I knew it I was halfway through my second listen. The instrumentals weren’t anything spectacular just chill to match. Overall it wasn’t bad but for me I doubt I’d revisit it as it isn’t the kind of chill I like to chill to. 5.5/10

What’s the difference between the DMV and the DMB? Not too much as you spend way too much time on it and you come out of it feeling better than other people. To me the DMB was a late 90s cult of listening. It was the non-grunge intellectual music that people felt different listening too. In the late 90s that may have been pretty cool, but to me it just seems like a white dude taking styles from all over and saying check this out. Were different. But was it good? Not exactly. 5.2/10
Oingo Boingo

This was way more fun than I expected but an appropriate amount of fun from a band named oingo boingo. My first couple listens I thought this was some silly 80s pop album but as the day progressed and my alcohol intake increased I found myself enjoying this album and it being a treat of melodic silliness. Overall not too bad. Just the right amount of weird. 6.2/10

This just wasn’t for me. The hyper pop and synth sound of the 80s was heavy in this and it didn’t resonate with me. I found the upbeat music and fast paced lyricism to be dated. Even though this was 79 it listens like 80s and the 80s have always been hit or miss with me. This one was a miss. 4.5/10
Gang of Youths

Was a bit shocked this band was Australian because listening to them I heard influences from Springsteen and the Killers. Their sound is pretty similar to Bleachers with the spoken cadence singing and varied instrumentals that progress in tempo through the songs. Overall I enjoyed this quite a bit and think that Australian indie pop/rock is a great genre and many unknown bands are in it. I listened to this a few times and even some of their other music but this was their best work it seemed. Very good and enjoyable. 7.5/10

not a bad indie rock album but I wouldn’t say it’s doing anything that hasn’t been done before it. None of the songs were that exceptional to me or had me thinking about how unique the sound was. It was really just middle of the road which for this list isn’t that bad but probably wouldn’t revisit. 6.1/10

My first thought when I listened to this album was could you imagine if this was your friends favorite album and every time you visited or got in their car they were itching to play this album. Thankfully this list only requires one day of listening to whatever that album was. A wild collection of songs that were like if Tom waits stopped smoking and was part of a cult. 2.8/10

Id imagine the person that picked this album is a pretty big fan of Pink Floyd. I like this album but it does have the noticeable differences of it being a solo project. In an alternate world this was done by Pink Floyd and the wall was the solo project of Roger waters. I’m glad this was the solo project. It’s a more personal concept album and works as a solo album yet Waters could use some stronger help from Gilmour. Overall good but not as good Floyd. 7.0/10
Pedro The Lion

Well that sure was a depressing album but that was kind of the point right. Not everything can be sunshine’s and this album did a good job of showing the darker side of people and the decisions they make. A bit of a drag at times but overall not too bad the grunge indie sound is solid and obviously very Seattle. A good deeper concept album for the darker days. 6.6/10

If you want old time jazz then this is what you want. 1920s swing jazz with Louis is clearly a historical fest and very important but to me the old time jazz is a bit bland and missing some of the spontaneity of later jazz that I prefer much more. This isn’t bad and it sure it has had major cultural impacts but it’s nothing id willingly revisit if I wanted to hear jazz. 6.4/10
The Avett Brothers

This is the kind of folk music that makes me think of goofy hipsters. The generic and bland lyrics make this album a bit laughable at points. The issue with folk sometimes is the instrumentals are never the strong point so if the lyrics suck then the songs aren’t that great. That’s exactly what happened here on this album. 4.7/10

This is more of a movie soundtrack than an album but then again the artist literally makes movie scores so that makes sense. Guess everyone has their own flavor but this one is not one I seek out. Not saying it’s bad, it’s just not for me. 4.5/10

My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy are the two bands that really tell you if someone grew up a millennial in the early 00s. This whole album is more of a nostalgic vibe than it is a good standalone album. It’s a bit long, the emo-pop sound goes more emo on some and more pop on the ones that are fun to listen to. This album has some solid creative marks and some overall really good songs. Not sure if this whole album will hold up over the years but some songs will. 6.8/10

Sufjan is an excellent song writer and musician. The range among his albums is pretty wide and varying to the point where it’s easy for people to have different favorites. Carrie and Lowell is a great album and the category is a bit more sad and darker than what most music is about. Sufjan uses his soft style of singing to really make the album shine. Overall it’s a great album and Sufjan music is impressive. 7.9/10

This was an unexpectedly great album from an artist that I’ve never heard of before. The poetic Americana style had some excellent storytelling within the songs. Overall this was something I’d revisit as the Americana genre has been something I’ve found so raw and heartfelt. This is what I’d imagine stereotypical dub is like except it’s not a stereotype it’s the real thing. Just some funk dub beats with some dub lyrics for 35 minutes. To me it’s a very unique style of music that is probably best listened to while under the influence of a specific plant. Overall though it’s fun and easy going. 6.1/10

This album definitely brings back some memories. One of the first CDs I’ve ever owned, I used to listen to this album a lot. For a kid this is a great blend of rock music with easy to understand lyrics. That was as a kid, now I found the album to be nostalgic, but nothing more than some very generic genre blending of Christian and pop rock. 2003 was a simpler time for music as the popularity of this shows but it’s not 2003 anymore and this is already a bit dated. 6.6/10

Never heard this album before but it felt like a light grunge alt rock album. The instrumentals were decent and had some hardcore moments but all in all wasn’t the full grunge sound. Feeling this was one of my favorites as it was in some nhl game I played as a kid. This album isn’t nearly as good as enema of the state as it has an odd interlude and different styling choices in songs on the back half of the album. This is solid but not nearly as good as a couple of their earlier albums. 7.6/10

Alexisonfire is one of those 00s emo scream bands that was right in the middle of melodic emo and screaming thrash. Dallas Green helps bring the tone down on Alexisonfire’s albums that make me enjoy them, yet I find his city and colour to be lame. Yet impressive the musical range and audience he reaches. The instrumentals are solid and are expected from a heavy rock band of the 00s. Crisis is probably my preferred album as it has their more palatable songs but this album was also very good. I enjoyed most of the songs. 6.9/10 (nice)

The biggest downfall I’ve always felt was the beats seem one dimensional and it makes UK rappers just sound like he’s free styling. Vampire Weekend is like when that good looking person you hate is really smart and really good at everything they do and when they talk to you they’re nice and you realize you don’t actually hate them. Contra has all of that and more. It’s fun, beachy vibes with some good modern lyricism. However this is probably my least favorite of their albums. VW is a good fun band. 7.5/10

It still had the horns and high tempo of most Latin music but having a grungier singer and a mire present percussion helps make this rock out pretty decently. Not your traditional Latin music here. Basically a pop Latin album from the 80s. Definitely one of a kind but as upbeat as it may sound, it’s still music I don’t understand and that doesn’t have to bring it down but when it’s 80s pop it does. Maybe a classic but I’ll never know. 3.0/10

MF Doom was one of the linguistically amazing rappers out there. He had an ability to flow over any beat no matter how unique. Food is one of his best albums as he makes a whole concept out of something so simple and still provides the classic doom mind bending rhymes with odd ball skits. There was no one like him. 8.4/10

It’s fun at times but others it’s like why did they add lyrics here or why didn’t they add lyrics more. This was a pretty decent album and very 90s sounding rock album. It’s not quite grungy but the lead singer has that sound but with more enunciation than others. The instrumentals are pretty much in line with what you would expect from an early 90s album. The lyrics. The songs are definitely different and some are good others are a bit weirder but not terrible. Overall a pretty average album. 6.2/10

The instrumentals have a little range but still very in line with the alternative sounding singers from the 80s. If you told me this was a spinoff band from joy division I’d believe it. A great album by the national. So many of their stuff sounds similar but their sound is very much their own so it’s hard to say which album is truly best. This one has a significantly more raw feeling to it compared to high violet but not as much as alligator. The national really just makes music for the semi successful educated people stuck in the routine despair of life. And sometimes that’s exactly what is needed. 7.9/10

This was an unexpectedly good album for what it is. Aside from that long bass drum intro this whole album was solid. The 00s alternative style is consistent throughout with a minor dash of despair. The instrumentals are strong and the singer toes the line of alternative and emo rock sound. Lyrically it’s a good collection of songs. Overall pretty good. 6.8/10

Never heard of this band before but I was surprised yet not shocked they were from Ann Arbor. Does every band that originates in AA have to have some sort of quirky off the wall quality? This album was alright. I don’t love live albums and part of it is some songs are really hard to play live. Their instrumentals are good but after I listened to some of their studio recorded music there is a big difference between that and the live sounds. Overall it was fine. If I were to listen to this band again it wouldn’t be from the live album. 5.6/10

Zappa sure is a zany guy. His music is quite impressive stylistically but his lyricism is goofy and satirical to the point where it kind of gets annoying. Tool was one of the bands I felt needed to be on this list. Found out this one was on it so I went with a different pick. After listening to this one I’m thinking two Tool albums would’ve worked. I remember when I first found Tool and they became my number one artist for the year. Their music is so unique but so well made it’s easy to listen to te hardcore prog sound. Probably one of the best bands in the 90s/00s. Lateralus is my personal favorite but Ænima is also very good and would listen to it many more times. 8.3/10

The first John Martyn album was pretty good and this one was pretty similar. The instrumentals had a bit more variety but it still had that martyn feel of cool laid back sound. I can see why people like him. His soft tone is very easy to listen too. I enjoyed this one a little bite more than the one on the list. 6.5/10

EDM music was such a weird phase of music but some people really loved it. Other just loved going to clubs and this music was everywhere. I always thought it was the turning point of musicianship being more computer based than talent based. Overall this isn’t anything I care to listen to but it’s not bad. Never thought I’d see a Pigeons album in this list but here we are. They’re like if phish was less psychedelic and more talented. This live album was alright. Their instrumental ability is great but the whole jam band thing is very much an acquired taste. It’s fun for a little bit but about 30 minutes in it gets tiresome. I’m sure the live shows would be a little bit more enjoyable. I know j wouldn’t revisit this since I would always skip songs from psychology when they pop up. 4.6/10

This was a band I’ve never heard of and I’m glad this was added. A nice psychedelic classic rock album. The beast and creature songs are somehow really entertaining and would make this a pretty decent Halloween album. The instrumentals are solid with nice guitar riffs and good tempo on the drums. Overall this was better than I’d imagine it could be at first look. 7.2/10

Another incredibly recent album which is always a weird choice for favorite album ever. Anyways The Cure is classic shoegaze but this album isn’t nearly as shoegazey as the older Cure is. Overall it’s a good album sure that really focuses on the difficulties of life and age. It’s not the cures best and it’s really not an amazing album but it’s still good. 6.6/10

Björk isn’t really my taste but this album was very clearly influential as the sound on this reminded me of several modern artists styles. The instrumentals ranging from orchestra to electronic sounds while having the emotional lyricism is something you see more now than ever. Bjork was ahead of her time however I still find her singing style hard to enjoy. This album is good, and probably better than other ones on the original list but still not really for me. 5.6/10

This was in consideration for my addition but there was already one Tool album. I love this album and it’s my favorite by tool. The instrumental rhythms are a winding rust of prog metal brilliance. Some punk music with some decent but dated guitar riffs. Overall it’s really just cool because it’s an audio record of a concert that remains in punk lore for being well punk. As for music this was rough. 2.7/10

The ups and downs through the songs built tension and made it much more dramatic than a regular album. Overall it’s one of a kind and I can see why it’s considered so great. This felt a bit disjointed as some of the metal was very progressive but other times felt dated and bland. The singing of the opera style was a unique choice to companion the instrumentals. It does have bat country which was a classic from like nhl 2006 but other than that this album was filled too much of high pitched guitar solos and holding notes for way too long. This album isn’t that great overall and not the best A7Fold album. 4.6/10

This is a classic and fantastic album from one of the chillest artists. Jack Johnson keeps it nice and simple with most of his music but the ability to create a positive and catchy tune is talent. This album is definitely his best because it has everything Jack Johnson does so well. Fun songs, love songs, songs about being better. It’s what makes his music enjoyable and it’ll always be worth a listen. 8.6/10

The singer has a rather unique voice that I found hard to enjoy for a whole album. This album is alright but for all the punk out there this doesn’t pass the smell test. 4.8/10

Try ing move past the call me maybe fame Jensen had a much more traditional pop album here. It still has some catchy songs but nothing as viral as before. Which may be a good thing. However this album is what modern pop struggles with. Talented singers with an array of over produced melodies that make the album feel like it’s one big show. There’s nothing to make the album feel special. It’s not bad but it just falls flat and isn’t memorable. 4.5/10

The Fontaines have been one of my favorite modern rock bands. On Romance they managed to come out with their most enjoyable and mainstream album. This one they tone down some of their Irish tones and ramp up the rock melodies. Overall I think this is a great album even with how recent it was released. Overall it’s a pretty fun recent album that has a little bit of everything. The changing of singers keeps the album fresh yet keeps the same string style instrumentally. I’d revisit this and definitely check out their other stuff. 6.8/10

The first and best album of Bon Iver is one that has its unique stylings make a lasting impact in an album less than 40 minutes. When this first came out it really changed the indie music landscape. I’m shocked this wasn’t on the original list. The melancholic sounds with the auto tune vocals created a mystifying listen that still resonated today. It’s really one of the best albums from the 2000s. A must listen. 8.9/10

Never heard this band before but I’m glad someone added it because this was some great prog rock. The twin lead guitar was real cool and didn’t know they were the leaders of it. A classic for all the millennials but when you really listen to the album it’s really just the two bangers in the beginning and then a bunch of R&B ballads mixed in with some ultra produced pop. When I added my album I was reluctant to add a second Tool album. There are now 3 on the users list and this one is, in my opinion, Tool’s 4th or 5th best. Which may sound bad but it’s still a very good album. Their earlier stuff is just a bit more impressive. This was made once Tool was pretty established and there just wasn’t as much of an edge on this one. 7.5/10

Thought this was an interesting album. Rather melancholy but with strong songwriting that gives a picture book of stories in song. This coming out in 2000 is perfect given a mood of uncertainty and loneliness with the turn of a century. Overall it was a well made album. 6.8/10
An alright indie pop album by this band Mew (pokemon fans?). It was like a less poppy sound than walk the moon while having stronger guitar presence and lyrically not as glimmer pop. Overall I still found this album hard to enjoy as all of the songs missed the mark for me. 5.3/10

That early 2000s rock/nu metal may be viewed as some angry teenage music but it really is some of the best stuff from the late 90s/early 00s. Serj is a fantastic singer and the range on here is what makes some of this album so good. There are a handful of songs that are great and a couple that are all time classics. This is a fantastic album that deserves many listens. 8.5/10

As a concept this album is really cool. Making songs about movies instead of making songs for movies. However as far as sufjan albums go this one is pretty much middle of the road. It’s not as melancholy as his other work due to the collaboration with Augustine. I’d say that makes the album still very enjoyable in its own sense but it impacts Sufjan’s overall typical sound in albums. Still a good album that I’d listen to again. 6.7/10

Never heard this album before abd I’d say it was a unique add. The first song had me enticed early but then as it continued down the path of a bad political thriller, I started to lose interest. New noise is the real saving grace of the album as it’s a fantastic combination of the hardcore screaming with great instrumentals. That song alone can get the heart rate downing a bit. Any other artist/band have their whole discography in this list? Because portishead now does. Not sure if all three needed to be added let alone anything other than Dummy. The self titled album opens in quite a rough way but then smooths out a little bit more as it progresses. The instrumentals are always something portishead has done well with the trippy clandestine sound but the singer is what makes or breaks their albums and this one was not too good. This one finished in third place…out of three. 3.4/10

I remember when this came out back when would still follow popular music releases. This was a solid album of conscious hip hop by a female. The production of the lofi jazzy beats with the nostalgic lyricism was a stark contrast to the popular female rapping of Cardi B. In 2016 this was a breath of fresh air. Overall it was decent for as corny as some of it was. 6.3/10

Prior to doing this list of wasn’t a big fan of REM. It was a little bit before my time and I always felt their music was a tad depressing but I like some melancholic music. They just never stuck with me. It took Out of Time for me to finally come around on them. Which makes sense as this had their most popular song but overall the whole album is more upbeat than their previous entries on the list. This one I could revisit. A lot of the negatives I’ve had on their previous albums get set aside here for a more commercial album that is easier to enjoy. 6.7/10

Al Stewart seems like the kind of musician that had a much larger influence in the UK than anywhere else. I’ve never heard of him prior to this but his melodies are pretty standard soft rock that resemble Paul McCartney, Bowie, and Elton John but lack the ability to write classics. Stewart is a good artist but he just gets overshadowed by the more popular artists of his time. 6.5/10

After being hesitant to add a second Took album to the user list we are now at 4 Tool albums with only Undertow left. It’s only a matter of time! Fear Innoculum is the most recent tool album and while it’s still very good. It’s also very formulaic to what Tool fans have come to like. This album is solid but the drawback is there’s less rawness that made their earlier stuff better and it’s mainly just solid prog rock instrumentals that they can output so precisely. 8.1/10

The 1975 is like the emo bands of the 2000s. If you grew up with it you may enjoy it but if it wasn’t your time then they seem like a bunch of weirdos. Mix that in either the popular electronic auto tune sounds of the late 2010s and that’s pretty much this album. A tough one to get through as it all felt really lame or I’m just getting old. 4.4/10

Less melancholic and with a stronger sense of nostalgia and appealing to the senses this album is a great listen. Holocene is one of Bon Iver’s best songs. To me there were some songs that they really excelled in, like the jazzier funky songs were great. But some of their songs are either really weird or they just aren’t as good in some genres. If they stuck to one genre per album I’d probably find one I’d like but instead it’s just songs here and there. 5.5/10

Just realized this is the first album by Isbell on this list. His songwriting ability should have him on the original list. This recent album is a really strong album and is mostly a recollection of the past. Some of the songs are masterfully written and you can feel the burden of life and love lost in the songs. As much as I enjoyed this I find Southeastern to be a little bit better but this was still an enjoyable album from one of the better songwriters today. 7.7/10

As far as modern R&B/Hip-Hop goes this is one of the better albums. Beyoncé has always been creatively one of the best artists of the 21st century. This album is very solid with mixing so many singers i to this while containing the concept of her personal life while having songs for every type of moment. Beyoncé is kind of like the female 21st as she can curate an album that spans from ballad type songs to smooth R&B to fierce Hiphop songs that are bangers. This album is a bit long and probably could be a couple songs shorter but overall it’s a good listen. Much better than most of her other work. 7.0/10

Jon Batiste is definitely one of the more creative and gifted artists of modern times. Id imagine if he was making music in the 60s he’d be a jazz legend. Not too shocking this album won several Grammys as it’s kind of an amalgamation of black music in one album and it’s done quite well. Between the jazz, R&B, and hip hop there’s a wide range of styles but Batiste brings it together nicely and gets some solid supporting acts to help it. 7.1/10

Welp the band name didn’t pan out long term. The album is pretty decent. Hardcore prog metal that’s kind of like a more intense tool. Worst part of this album was the singer with the intense yelling. If this is a full instrumental or he toned it down a little this album would have some good replay value but that’s not the case. Instead it’s an album that has its moments but not something I’d choose over some other prog rock metal bands. 6.4/10
This felt like if Neutral Milk Hotel made a punk album. The array of instruments, the singer with the average voice and long drawn out notes and the depth in lyricism all match. Except NMH were a bit more conceptual and AJJ was more song to song. It was okay but if I wanted to hear the tambourine and organ with a guitar this wouldn’t be my first choice. 6.0/10

Ten is a hard album to follow up on. Between the great songwriting and hard rock it’s one of the best grunge albums made. In Vs Pearl Jam went in a little different direction. Their best song on the album is a much softer song that still rocks. Pearl Jam had a wider range of ability and in Vs they show that off even if it isn’t the hard grunge style everyone fell in love with. 7.2/10

The Who has made some great songs and even their concept albums are unlike any others, but Quadrophenia is what happens when people don’t tel you no. This album is way too long and most of the songs are pretty similar in style just different lyrics and the occasional orchestra instrument. The album may fit as a concept but it doesn’t fit as an enjoyable album. It’s like watching The Irishman. You know the people in it have talent but you wonder why it takes so long and split it up over a couple days. To me this is a 2 star album but compared to so many in this list it’s a low 3. 5.8/10

The worst part of this album is the production as most of the beats stay on that underground theme and lack any strong originality. The lyricism is the shining part of this album but without great production the songs get a bit more lost in the mix. 6.6/10

Harry Styles is probably one of the more famous modern pop stars to not seem to be going insane. His music has a lot of good from what you would want out of a male pop stars. To me that means it’s kind of a meddling album that I wouldn’t care to listen to much. Overall it’s pretty good for music it’s just not my taste. The difference between pop now and the pop from 90s 80s and 70d I feel is that now it’s much more introspective and there’s a lot less catchy tunes outside of the res big pop songs that seem to come and go with the artists. Harry at least is strong enough to stick around for a while. 5.0/10

I didn’t hate this but yet I didn’t really love it. Hornsby has some solid hits but this solo album doesn’t hit that same piano soft rock vibe. This felt like the jazzier rock of a divorced dad that was really trying to still feel cool. Which sucks because yacht rock, to me, is cool but this tries really hard and comes off a bit lame. Some of the songs are alright where the jazz instrumentals are left alone, but the lyricism like rainbow’s Cadillac for example just seems forced. Not every album is gonna be a piano jazz banger. That’s just the way it is. 5.3/10

This album does feel a bit dated in the 90s metal era but it’s still an enjoyable album with lots of unique features that your typical metal album wouldn’t have. Weird Al is definitely a genius to some degree. To be able to create whole parody songs out of preexisting ones is a skill to hear every time. On this album he takes some older classics and turns them into funny bits. Only issue with this is it’s not something that’s easy to revisit. I used to enjoy weird Al back when I was in middle school but now it’s just fine. For an album this is impressive but I wouldn’t revisit it. 5.5/10

The lack of David Byrne is very evident here. There’s a reason the singers are the focus point and have the biggest egos, because without them some bands fail to be as good. This is an album where that is audibly visible. Byrnes somewhat average vocals and songwriting made the talking heads huge. This one is pretty good although somewhat heavy instrumental, it does have a Radiohead-esque feel to it at times and is a decent listen. 6.6/10

I wouldn’t have guessed this was The Church’s 26th album. Kind of makes you wonder if they love it or are just fiscally irresponsible. Either way this album felt like an amalgamation of several modern indie bands including arctic monkeys real estate and the national. For a band that’s been around this long you’d think they’d have their own sound carved out. It was okay but didn’t love it. 5.9/10

Having fall out boy on this list kind of makes sense. They were a huge band two decades ago and some absolute bangers that were pretty much unavoidable and are still great listens. Unfortunately this is not the album I was speaking about. This is the pop rock album that came out 8 years later and was filled with a bunch of ESPN promo songs that were significantly less enjoyable than what made them famous. Good band. A solid indie electronic album. Midnight Coty has to be one of the most Shazam-ed songs ever. It’s been in so many movies and you hear that riff and it resonates. The whole album is definitely above average but it’s not as good as the first few songs let on. 7.0/10

Not my favorite style of metal music. The power metal era always felt like it tried to be a faster more extreme sound that Black Sabbath made in the late 70s but without the ability to capture the same darkness. The longer high pitched notes have always been something I haven’t enjoyed in metal. Overall though there are a few songs that are good. The metal riff of the classical Hall of the mountain king and then the follow up song are both pretty solid. Overall though this isn’t something I’d revisit to listen to again for fun. 5.5/10

Never heard of Tom Misch before so this album was a pleasant surprise. The way he fuses the jazz pop sounds with some solid best production made this a pretty enjoyable album. Listened to it a few times and didn’t get tired. Could definitely revisit. 6.9/10 (nice)

This album was surprisingly pretty good. The singer has a more high pitched sound which makes the darker toned lyrics not as obvious. They have a sound that varies and goes between pop rock to harder alt rock. There are times here you can pickup the Radiohead influence but I never once got Kendrick Lamar. They also have a midlake sound on some songs which is cool. Overall I would listen to this album again. Pretty good. 7.1/10

Vampire weekend really can’t make bad music. Their newest album isn’t my favorite of theirs but I do prefer this over Contra. Oddly enough those are the only two albums on this list. As far as Dutch bands go, I would say this band was pretty good. Lump them in with other psychedelic rock bands of the 60s and these guys are pretty much in the middle. There are some strong points with the guitar work. The 13 minute instrumental song in the middle of the album was an odd choice. This wasn’t bad but not good enough to revisit. 5.0/10

The first album that came out after Mac’s death was a significant change in style, and the struggles he was facing can be heard throughout. This was one of his better albums. A more low key introspective album for the guy who started off making party rap. He came a long way musically and had a lot of talent. The pleasures of this album are a bittersweet feeling. 7.8/10

If this came out in 2004 it would’ve made more sense given the whole vibe of the album. I probably would’ve loved it if it came out then. It has a strong Linkin Park sound which may be why they could pull it off in 2014. It’s not as hardcore as some other numetal music but it also isn’t much different from a genre that was significantly more popular years before this album. Doubt I’ll revisit this one. 5.6/10

Bluegrass has had a decent revival over the past decade. When you think bluegrass I’m sure the first city that doesn’t come to mind is Lansing Michigan but the sound is definitely there. I don’t listen to a ton of bluegrass outside of sturgil and a few similar artists on a playlist but this album was pretty good. Very talented while still having good lyricism that makes bluegrass the unique genre it is. The three instrumental tracks may have been overkill but that’s the bluegrass difference. 6.9/10 (nice)

Danny Brown is pretty polarizing rapper. I’m partial to him being from Detroit but I understand why people dislike his music. It’s made for those parts in movies where the main character goes on drug filled montage. He is a pretty good rapper he just has a sound and style that can be a bit off putting sometimes or for long durations. This still has some credible replay ability though as the production is solid and the features given the album an added bonus. 6.3/10

This one is 100% Paul McCartney sound. Much more of the rockabilly, muzak sound that is his own unique creation. It’s interesting how it was panned when it first came out and then like 30 years later people were like oh right, Paul’s a genius, this is good. Paul is a genius. This is good but it’s not his best in my opinion. He thrives more with some editing and input from other. Obviously the Beatles but even the wings albums are better as a whole than his solo stuff. However Paul is arguably one of the best musicians ever so even his lesser albums are still so far above other people’s. Of course I’d listen to this again. It’s Paul McCartney. 7.6/10

Barenaked ladies is one of those bands that if you were around when they released their stuff it was more impactful than going back and listening to their discography. The early 90s was filled with grunge and this album was the opposite of that. Whimsical and dorky. It’s a much brighter side of music. Their songs are a bit cheesy at times but overall pretty good. They have their own style that have made an impact musically since their original album. This was decent and has replay value as their hits are still pretty classic. 6.7/10
Denzel Curry

Denzel Curry is one of the best modern rappers. He has an eclectic high energy style that makes it hard not to bop along with his songs. Lyrically he has depth and is able to layer some complex styles in an album. Melt my eyez isn’t my favorite Denzel album. I tend to lean towards taboo or Zuu as they’re a bit more raw but still lore refined than imperial. This album was solid though. Plenty of good features and overall worth revisiting for some good modern rap. 7.3/10

Never heard this band or album before. It was pretty good. My initial thoughts were this was like a darker hard rock Radiohead. The 20 minute song is quintessential prof rock though and was really like 3 songs. Overall it was enjoyable and I’d listen to it again. The fact swans has been releasing music since the late 80s is pretty crazy. Even crazier is it took them 30 years to conjure up this prog/avant garde rock album that really made them more relevant. Maybe due to Fantano’s love of this album. If it wasn’t so long I would have listened to this more than a couple times. It’s not a bad album by any means, very experimental and unique. Just hard to grasp for my generic ears. Should listen to it more but we’ll see 6.3/10

There’s no doubt that Bo burnham is some kind of genius. His meta knowledge of modern society mixed with his ability to craft word play is unparalleled. Even at such a young age he was able to captivate with his internet songs and standup. Inside is a more complex Bo but still whimsical about all things. Overall this is a funny album that really doesn’t get much replay unless you really enjoy him. As far as music creativity goes this is impressive. 7.0/10

I was put on mastodon by my friend who is a huge metal/djent/prog guy and basically told me mastodon was simpler metal music. Yeah that may just be why I enjoy this album a good bit. Mastodons early work is some solid stuff. They are hardcore and technical without going to the extreme that some metal becomes hard to listen to. This album starts great and then levels off a bit but it remains pretty solid. Nice choice. 7.4/10

Based on the band name I was expecting something much more terrible than a lofi jazz album. This was truly enjoyable and was easy to get lost into the slow tunes of the piano and brass. There’s disdain in some songs but it’s not punky it’s just disapproval which is something a Canadian band can do so well. Paid in Full is a quintessential early rap album that paved the way for the 90s rap to become what it was and change pop culture immensely. Their rap style and production may seem rudimentary from modern perspective but this album is revolutionary if you see how often it was sampled and referenced in the past 30 years. Historically significant and still a great rap album both lyrically and instrumentally. 8.0/10
