This album made great background music and did not seem nearly as long as it was listed as at over an hour. There was nothing specifically catchy or great about the album or any of the songs. Fits right in as a 5/10 and I gave it 3 stars.
The cover on apple music is so much worse than this one. This album sounds like being in space. Its a really cool and immersive experience. Sometimes its chill and sometimes its very noisy but each songs all have the aame kind of trippy vibe to it. This guy definitively took a lot of drugs. It dindt felt like it was an hour long tbh. I loved it and it was a great discovery.
Vibey and funky. Worth a listen
It’s certainly a challenging album to listen to but is more enjoyable if you can dedicate time to focus on it. Definitely not an album to throw on in the background (as I did). Provisional 2 for now.
This one has good memories for me. One of my co-workers at the record store was big into it, so I heard it often back then. Liked hearing it again after all this time. Not the biggest fan of shoegaze, but I like this one.
See my previous review on Spiritualized ... I can't believe there are two albums by this band on on the list.
A near perfect album to me, and I'm so surprised that more people on here don't seem to love it? I especially adore that its sound is much bigger and bolder than the first track's serene ambience (sometimes it even gets outright scary). It's very orchestral and movie soundtrack-like, while also knowing when to explode into some dirty electric guitar. Every time I listen, it really does feel like I'm floating in zero-gravity attempting to commune with aliens. Plus, I can vividly imagine WALL-E and EVE waltzing in space to the opening track, so it scores extra points with me!
Okay album
What in the fuck is "Space Rock"? Anyway. This was ... weird. I enjoyed some songs and not others. Chill music. If you want something easy to listen to, put this in your playlist.
Very mediocre
Album #235: Spiritualized – Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space ⭐⭐⭐ To me, 1997 is one of the best years there ever was in popular music. It wasn’t even about any particular movements in music or any particular cultural shifts. What made 1997 great was simply the sheer number of brilliant albums released that year. NME named this the best album of 1997. To me, it is far from it. It’s a very hard one to review, though, because it has a few good things going for it. It’s ambitious. It’s long, layered and dense. Musically, there’s a lot going on. It’s almost like a Britpop twist on Mercury Rev or the Flaming Lips. But! To be fair, this came a little before those bands’ big albums. Deserter’s Songs came out in 1998, and The Soft Bulletin followed in 1999. So Spiritualized were ahead of their time in that regard. There are horns, pianos, beautiful string sections and choirs. It’s got a big bag of tricks, and musically, it plays them well. The best song on the album by far is Cool Waves. There are moments of real beauty here, and the chorus of that song, and the emotion behind it, is genuinely beautiful. Where it falls apart for me is the tone of the thing. Yer man Jason Pierce just comes across as a total dickhead throughout this album, and it’s largely because of the drug element. It’s a kind of a drug symphony, but I just think there are better ways to write about this stuff. Being off your head on drugs and hallucinogenics can seem really interesting at the time, but so many people who write lyrics about these experiences end up producing the most basic, boring hippie bullshit. The David Crosby school of lyricism. “Whoa, man.” “What’s going on?” “I’m off my head.” “She’s so real.” All this nonsense. In a way, I feel for him. Having been in the position Jason Pierce is describing here, being completely off your head on drugs, trying to make it to outer space and get as high as possible, I can tell you that relaying those experiences to other people is often a frustrating experience in its own right and usually very boring for the listener. And Pierce couldn’t write an interesting lyric about it to save his life. The best lyric on the whole thing is courtesy of John Prine on Cop Shoot Cop. Musically, it’s a plus. Lyrically, it’s a real negative. So yeah, not one of the best albums of 1997 by a long way for me. I can understand why it’s revered. But there’s better stuff out there, and much better lyrics too.
Fine album
Not very impressed. Occasional good harmonies but not worth another listen.
Little weird
- Tracks longer than 3:59: Yes -Long tracks interesting or special: Frustratingly no. -Album shorter than 58 minutes: Yes. -Will listen to album again: Possibly -Overall: This was a real roller coaster. I swung from liking to hating this album song by song. I really enjoyed the use of horns and the choir style backing up singing. However, I was constantly looking to see if the songs were almost done, because for the most part they were too long and not for good reasons. Long almost looping portions in the middle of song just didn’t work for me. At least Cop Shoot Cop… varies as it moves through its 17 minutes. Serious question, for people who like tracks like No God Only Religion what is it that you find enjoyable? I’m really not trying to yuck anyone’s yum, but I really am interested in what appeals to you. I know full well that listen to things that other people find tortuous, so I’m not being judgy, just curious.
Interesting album and I enjoyed it.
Some of it was okay, chill, laid back kind of indi music. Some of it was just a cacophony of sounds that went on too long
this band is so good on taking you on journey. really earns its space rock label. fully warrants its 70 minute runtime, feel like one giant song. very impressive feat of an album, I really enjoyed this
There's definitely something here, perhaps it would have made a great film score. It felt like it needed to accompany something that wasn't there. But by itself it left me a little bored. 2*
a rough one to get through. sort of psychedelic, sort of atonal instrumental. Some of it was ok to listen as I worked, some was just hard to listen to. Nothing I would willingly listen to again
Couldn't get into this at all.
Love the sounds! I've been listening to the album for the past few years and it is definitely one of the most unique albums I've heard. Very enjoyable.
Shoegaze classic, can get a little slow and monotonous at times, but there's a lot here that resonates.
Cop Shoot Cop is like John Prine but awesome.
Cellogaze. My music app followed on with Galaxie 500, Jesus and Mary Chain etc which were frankly a lot more interesting.
Great album from start to finish.
Title track was our first dance as a married couple. Cop Shoot Cop is as good a closer as any album has had
starts incredibly strong, finishes even stronger. wish i was more locked in with the middle but hell this was an experience
This just just flow in space.
Not much.
J Spacemen managed to lay bare the blues and krautrock undercurrents that make up shoegaze’s extraterrestrial dimension, all wrapped up in a big, beautiful and endlessly fascinating swirl of reverb and gain. Impeccable flow included - just as the original CD packaging suggested: sedating.
Wasn't sure of what to expect but its reaffirmed my faith in this process. It's ethereal and earthy, gritty and lifting, it's a great album
Interesting but it gets a little noisy
My ears kinda hurt
Fun ride here. A bit long, but kind of mesmerizing. Probably good not great, but didn't get old after several spins.
2.4 stars There were points when I thought I liked this. It was fine background music type thing. But the last track honestly pissed me off and I turned it off. It’s forgettable and I have seen the album referenced many times but never knew what it was about. I still don’t. But I have a frame of reference for never listening again.
This album flits between boring and grating, which really isn't a nice recipe for 70 minutes of music. It's pretty weird in parts, kind of spacey and slow, but then other parts just sound like animals trampling over random instruments. 'The Individual' is one of the most torturous songs I've had on this list to date. Nails on a chalkboard for 4 minutes. Not for me.
I haven't skipped forward on a track 'til this album. There are songs on here that upset my calm; like being smothered in flavorless syrup. Just, no.
This album really switched up for me. 2 of the most loved songs open the album, and if I'm being totally honest, neither of them really appealed to me that much, I didn't find them to be as great as people said. However, as soon as 'I Think I'm In Love' started, I knew that the album was something special! After that, the whole album was pretty much pure Space Rock brilliance, from some Post Rock and Noise Rock influence, to the fantastic vocals, there wasn't much to dislike. My favourite tracks were: 'Electricity', 'No God Only Religion' and 'Cool Waves', but it's really hard to pick favourites on an album full of gems!
Interesting and cool album that Ive never heard of Standout songs: Come Together Electricity Cool Waves
Really, a 17 minute song! Other than that, the disc was okay.
Spacey vibes and great production don’t fully compensate for the fact that I was just bored.
Not my vibe... at all.
So I listened to this whole album on a Saturday while driving and now come Monday I can't remember a single song from it. I vaguely remember some parts here and there and the overall vibe of the album but nothing stuck out enough for me to catch on and keep it with me. I saved a couple songs but even those I can't recall now. But I do remember thinking that it was one of the most middle of the road albums I'd heard in a while and that I wouldn't image people reacting strongly one way or the other. 2.5/5
Je ne connaissais pas Spiritualized (le band à Hendrou). Très bon, quand même. Il se passe beaucoup de choses; et y'a plein d'instruments. C'est bien fait. On peut dire que c'est de la vraie musique.
Écoute distraite.
I liked some of it. I disliked some of it. I probably liked more than I disliked, but not something I would seek out again in the future.
never listened to the full album before. very relaxing. i would like to own this on vinyl
норм, одну сохранил.
Doesn't hit quite like it did when it came out. 3/5.
I’m blown away by this album. Where has it been all my life? The title couldn’t be more fitting. I love albums that take me on a journey. Top tracks: Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space, Come Together, Broken Heart
Wow! This was an incredible album. I've never heard of Spiritualized before, unfortunately. "Broken Heart" makes me sit up and listen closely every time I hear it.
While interesting in that some tracks seem as though they would have been made in the 1960s-70s, I found this rather uninteresting except for the first part of the final track. Alas, the amount of swagger in that bluesy, jazzy, soulful jam session couldn't salvage the wreck of the rest of the album. A shred of my consciousness can imagine a world where in the right mood I could enjoy this more, so at least I'm not going to rank it on the bottom of the pile.
This definitely gets points for originality; it's unlike anything I've heard before. Lots of stuff going on here, and while it doesn't always work (they can fuck right off with those extended guitar feedback solos) it was interesting. I appreciate the work that went into this. 4.1
Eigentlich dachte ich, die langweiligsten Platten wären durch. Wie man sich doch täuschen kann. Wo bekomme ich jetzt Minuspunkte her, um das für mich einzuordnen?
A lot of floating, also some straight up noise.
Good listening. Varied and nice arrangements, and not completely normal.
On paper, everything Spaceman does is made specifically for me: atmospheric guitars, bombast and quiet, shoegaze-adjacent effects, both melancholy & uplift melodies, beautiful recordings, psychedelic leanings...and to date I can count on one hand the Spiritualized songs I like and one is a cover. This mainly comes down to his songwriting, which is heavy on two chord/blues progression drones, with little variation except in dynamics. Maybe this is also the reflex a musician has after doing hours and hours in jam sessions and...growing out of that...so the monotony of the Spaceman sound is just that and never reveals anything terribly unique to my ears, whereas a normal person might find this the best possible thing.
Incredibly bored throughout.
9/10 Super simple foundations on which chaos, noise and songcraft flourish. Excellent rock
Pretty cool.
I liked parts of this? But it needed to be reigned in a bit. Would just get a little too meandering for my tastes. When they found a good groove and actually stuck with it, like in "I Think I'm In Love" I enjoyed it, but it was generally too spacey.
Overly-indulgent "space rock" dashed with a trace of heroin. Quite excessive at times, but it's clear that that was the intent going in. Thoroughly enjoyable and a great addition to this list.
Ok
I’ve always liked this album. It requires proper set and setting, like any trip. 4 Boolean: True
This was a mixed bag. Pretty interesting and has a lot of different stuff going on but also dragged on in places and was too long.
Akin to the chalk murals that seem to create caverns beyond the barren sidewalk which they adorn, so too does Spiritualized feign depth through the blandest music imaginable. Adding a 16 minute "ambient" closer to your album of failed Bowie/Beatles/Floyd worship not so much an epic conclusion, but an insolent slap in the face to the beleaguered listener. If I were a free man, I would have bowed out of this debacle an hour prior to the extended sophomoric "psychedelia" we were launched into on the ultimate track. The title of this record smacks of the cerebral gurglings of an adult who was popular in high school now thinking about the world for the very first time. "Wait, guys, have you ever thought about, you know... life??" Yes, Tanner, I think most of us became curious about this at the age of 3, but congratulations; better put out a record before that thought vanishes. A record that resembles gruel. Grey, bleak, somehow British, and I don't have the CD in front of me, but presumably low in nutritional value. 0.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Sorry boys, I can't come out today, I just thought about where babies come from. This record is gonna be my deepest yet.
Pretty cool minus the noisy tracks.
I loved this. Wish I’d gotten into them at the time. Psyche shoegaze freak out.
Nice one.
own
Pretty decent. Some songs I could vibe to, some where meh. Otherwise a welcome inclusion for something a bit left field.
I'd love to know what the cost of production was on this album. I'll bet a quarter it wasn't recouped. The music is all well and good, but just really . . . empty? It feels weird and over-complicated for the sake of being weird and over-complicated. I couldn't decipher any real meaning from any song. Lyrics seem to be almost an after thought. And no, I'm not listening to your 17+ minute song unless you're Arlo Guthrie.
Bien.
Okay, that was different. Not really liking it, til that last song. Then I had to listen to it again. I can say I do like the opening song, and the last song. I get lost on those in the middle, not sure I like or not. Oh well.
Really interesting and atmospheric but because of that, it was hard for me to latch on to much.
Nice at times but too long
I quite like this, poppy but in a good way. Nice harmonies and soundscapes. It's called Space Rock apparently. However I'm not sure if this deserves a place in the list, it doesn't sound influential or groundbreaking, just nice. Another 3 but a good sounding one.
Meh.
Well worth the listen. I'll have to check out more by this group
Mal was anderes und ähnlich wie das letzte Album von Air. Zwischen 3,5 und 4 aber ich gebe die 4. Einfach weil es sehr kreativ und spaßig zu hören war.
Didn't know this one! I like! Will give it some more wirls.
was torn between a 2 and 3 here, it felt like it had a lot of potential in the first few songs but didn't really live up to it. Then got quite self-indulgent toward the end which I did not care for. I'll be generous and give it a 3 but it definitely had 4 potential
Surprised I never heard it before. Really quite lovely.
The beautiful, gorgeous record that enamored me and lured me into J Spaceman's psychedelic universe. While it isn't my favorite of his records (Playing With Fire and Lazer Guided Melodies are above this one), it's the classic for a reason. Turn it on and drop out. Let it wash over you. One of the greatest records of all time and a tour-de-force of record production. Lush and spacious and sad and loud all at once.
Chill, but not memorable
thoughts: - the opener is actually insane. fools rush in in the background???? holy shit. I always forget that fools rush in was my first dance at my wedding until the song is like halfway through - Electricity doesn't match the vibe - We went from fun chill to overly creepy and nerve-racking standouts: - ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space - Broken Hearts playlist adds: - ladies and gentleman we are floating in space: like a movie OVERALL: 3.5
So beautiful I had to listen twice
nice sounds but boring to listen to.

3,2 Highlights: Come Together, I Think I'm In Love
I had high hopes after hearing the first song but got completely lost until the last two songs which were excellent.
Litt overrasket over denne, mye mer variert enn jeg hadde sett for meg. Kan ikke si at jeg likte alt, men det meste var helt ok. Undødvendig med en 17-minutters avslutningslåt.
I liked very much. For me the vibe was kinda like Disintegration but with better instrumental and lyrics, an updates version of that album. I listend to it while doing another stuff so not a 100% focus but still loved it!!
Not terrible. I liked how some rock elements were mixed into what was mostly minimalistic electronic music. Not really for me, but it at least did something kind of interesting. 3/5
lol, when this popped up, I thought for sure it was electronic dance music. I had my one-star rating all cued up and ready too. As it turns out, this is weird, spacey brit rock from the late 90's. It's actually not bad. Stone cold sober, this is a 3.5 star record for me, but I get the sense that if I was deep in the throes of a mushroom trip, this would be a hard 5-star record. Most of the songs are probably twice as long as they actually need to be, but I feel like in the right state of mind, these songs would be perfect. 7.5/10
