Loved this album since it came out in the 90’s. A masterpiece.

Today I got some bad news about my old dog, he needs surgery and well he’s old so I worry about my buddy. I was glad to have this served up as today’s album because I find the music of Spiritualized to have a certain warmth to it. It’s spacey but they blend the rock with it so well that it grounds it and man does it work. It’s mournful yet comforting and what a cast of musicians and producers they brought in for this, what a beautiful result. Cool Waves made me want to cry a bit. I’m glad I got served this album today. Music really can help sometimes. I’m confident my dog will be ok. 5 stars

Wow, exactly what an album should be. Moments that are insane and loud and off the rails, and then very tender and soft portions, too. Love the name, as well.

Simply just an amazing set of tracks. Solid 5 Stars.

I’m at a 10. Believe me, I’m just as surprised. When we last got our lead singer here, it was for Spacemen 3’s “Playing With Fire”, and that was an album that I gave a 2.5 bumped up to a 3. This is so, so far sonically removed from that album that I can hardly believe this album & its vision came from that band’s ashes, yet somehow, I also don’t find it extremely surprising. For as flawed as “Playing With Fire” is in terms of its execution, its strength comes in managing to find places for the soundscape to settle & find sweet spots for the listener’s ears, even in its most awkward moments. If you take their ability to find those sweet spots & use it on actually sweet, forceful & emotionally driven soundscapes that actually resemble traditional music, then you get an entire album of sweet spots, somehow rooted in the same ever-present chaos that bands like Can used on “Tago Mago”, along with the serenity they found on “Future Days”, yet blended with the shoegaze-y nature of “Playing With Fire”. It also helps that there’s a loose narrative here around the perils of drug addiction, how it acts as a black hole on your life that gets everyone in its orbit sucked into your troubles & trauma, and how even when you try to make genuine efforts to clean up & get yourself out of it, that black hole will come back to haunt you. Practically every track here is either based around the enjoyment of taking drugs, trying to kick the habit, having to deal with the consequences of it on one’s relationship, finding the mental clarity to free yourself from it long enough to get the people you care about out of its orbit, or in the case of “Cop Shoot Cop…”, being dragged back into that hell, feeling the consequences of it, and being too emotionally drained to recognize there’s no hope left. This album enhances the little things that build up, puts them under a microscope, and makes them feel monumental because of it. I’d love to gush more & more about the instrumentation here, the brilliance of the pacing & how it tries to emulate the adrenaline rush of shooting some heroin into your system along with the cooldowns that follow once the high wears off, the great punch to the bass & percussion that ties the whole thing’s energy together, the serenity of the orchestra & choir & the horror of the overdriven guitar & the distorted flutes… but it’s just an album that deserves to be heard to capture the full extent of the constant emotional whiplash present here. It is brilliantly performed, especially with headphones in, & for 1997, the mixing job is just remarkable. In closing, I’m just blown away. There are some nitpicks I’d have here & there throughout this album, but they barely affect the visceral nature of the production. It feels like listening to a grand tragedy play out in real time, and for as cheesy as it sounds, I feel like I’m floating in space after having heard it. It’s a 10.

This is the type of album I was hoping for when starting this journey through music. Something I think is pretty unique that I can’t name several other albums off the top of my head that do the same thing and is pretty well-deserving of recognition as one of 1001

It feels like listening to "tech-old songs" relaxing and perfect for afternoon listening.

A 4 and a half that’s closer to a 5 than a 4. Class

Superb

This album rules and was a perfect thing to set as your facebook status in 2007 to let everyone know you liked indie music. And you know what? I still do. Five stars. Favorite track: I Think I'm in Love.

Pretty ambitious album. Really enjoyed it.

Before we start, may I just say the title of this album is fantastic! Gives hitchhikers guide to the galaxy vibes. The title track was not what I was expecting, but I was not disappointed. It brought to mind the image of a slow dance at a wedding in a sci fi movie. Bringing in “Can’t help falling in love” at the end was surprising, but fit well. I was not expecting Come Together to be as heavy as it was. The instrumental was heavier, but the vocals still remained melodic and almost trance-like. I think I’m in love was solid the whole way through! An enjoyable track that didn’t ever feel its length. All my Thoughts was this pretty, meandering ballad until it wasn’t! The cacophony of music just worked for me, and then going back to the slower pace at the end, beautiful. Stay with me was so satisfying musically. That bended note on the guitar, and building up to more powerful instruments at the end. Electricity was a much needed pace change at this point in the album. For lack of a better word, I had fun with it! The Individual was weird, but eh, what’s a good album without an instrumental track that makes you wonder if you’ll still have ears after. Broken heart truly captured the feeling it was trying to convey. Loved the strings. No God only religion also has a great name! It’s a cool track too. Cool waves was so relaxing, I couldn’t help but enjoy it. Cop shoot cop was aight, but I honestly think Cool Waves would’ve been a better closer. Screw it, 5/5 ⭐️, I loved this. 44/1089

I think the first track is overrated but the rest of the album is filled with bangers.

Incredible, amazing, never been done before. Would be great for a road trip or a deep clean while deep thinking.

As soon as this was done I put on Atom Heart Mother and kept the vibe going. Anyone who rated this less than a four needs to take an edible and put on some good headphones.

My first 5!!! The production and everything is spectacular. I’ve never heard of this band or this album, but will definitely be added to the rotation. Favorites: Broken heart Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space

Come on, come together! Toujours planant

3/1001 I know this album by heart, my favourite tune is "Think I'm In Love" 5/5

Absolutely genius that does not diminish.

I could get some serious work done to this album

if you give this album anything less than 5 stars your taste in music is suspect.

Amazing

The battles with and highs associated with addiction challenging but with beauty. A record on regular rotation.

Wow. What a remarkable album. My experiences with the works of Jason Pierce have only gotten stronger over time. The Spacemen 3 album I got in February? Didn't care for it. Had some good parts, but also some parts that I didn't like very much. Lazer Guided Melodies from July? Significant improvement. I enjoyed that one quite a bit. But this? This is reaching full-on masterpiece territory. Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space is the kind of album that shouldn't seem feasible, and yet it somehow exists for us to listen to. It's a very ambitious album for sure, but those ambitions paid off in spades, because this album is excellent. The atmosphere is a bit noisy, but it's also ethereal and oh so interesting. I will admit that some moments aren't the kind of thing I'll go back to frequently, but this is one of those albums where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This is one of those "complete artist statement" type of albums where the full experience is the priority. Of course, that doesn't mean that there aren't standout tracks. The opening title track sets the stage perfectly while also working as a work of art in its own right. "I Think I'm In Love" is super interesting and progresses in a very unique way over the course of the song. "Broken Heart" is, as the name suggests, quite sad. The orchestral parts that dominate the second half of the song just tug at your heartstrings. But as I said earlier, it's when you analyze the album at large when you really start to appreciate it more and more. The overarching themes of heartbreak and drug addiction work together to create a compelling narrative the likes of which are hard to find in albums. Despite the space-rock atmosphere, the core of the album is very much so a human one, which allows the themes to effectively resonate with the listened. I don't know what else to say. Over the course of 70+ minutes, Spiritualized managed to capture my attention with their introspective lyricism, varied musical concepts, and otherworldly atmosphere. This album is truly one of a kind. Light 5/5.

One of the brilliant accidents of Brit Pop is that record companies threw money at indie and alternative projects like this. Choirs, strings, Dr John would have been unthinkable in the 80’s or now. Even the cd packaging was groundbreaking. Epic in scale and unified in concept. I’ve known this album since release but listening to it today I still find new facets.

Noisy and soaring and sinking and floating and screaming and laughing and tender and raw and that’s life! How have I never heard of this before now? Deep shame over that and lots of love for the thought and creativity and skill and chutzpah that forced this into being.

Awesome

This is one of those rare albums from this list I live for. I had never heard of this album or Spiritualized before, this was my first time experiencing any of this music. But I can confidently give this album all 5 of the stars it deserves. I think this album is my taste in music exactly and there is no way I ever would’ve come across it without this list. So, as frustrating as this project can be sometimes, finding albums like these makes all the pretentious post punk of this list worth it.

Słuchałem wiele lat temu, nic nie pamiętam 🤪

Such a strong piece of work. From that first incredibly moving opening track through to the marathon closing track, it’s a fun ride of beauty and uniqueness that keeps you on board the whole way through. Definitely need to listen to this one!

Spiritualized war definitiv ein Fang !!

If I’m floating for eternity out in space and need to boom sound waves reverberating out to the endless galaxy- this ain’t a bad option at all. Wall of sound any and every day.

Absolutely blissful and sad and brilliant.

Fantastic. Will need to give Spritualized a deep dive listen. Great full album. Reminds of some Brit Pop vibes but underlay of big soundful albums from Radiohead or TV on the Radio

Title track has been in heavy rotation for a few years, but I've never listened to the whole album before today. Shame on me, this is great.

October 3, 2025 Album #762: Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space by Spiritualized Genre: Space Rock, Neo-psychedelia, Shoegaze, Gospel To get this out of the way, *Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space* by Spiritualized is one of my favorite albums of all time, so it’s going to be hard for me to talk about this album without bias. You don’t know how happy I was when this popped up. The album opens with the absolutely ethereal and angelic title track, one of the best album openers of all time. It dips you straight into the ethereal and crisp production of this album, matched with the very emotional and simple lyricism. My love for it cannot be overstated. *I Think I’m In Love* is a really honest song about Jason Pierce’s, the head of Spiritualized, relationship with Heroin and touches on themes of drugs and drug abuse. Its call and response vocals / lyrics are phenomenal. Allusions to drugs can also be found on *Home of the Brave*, with its honest lyrics and ethereal crescendo. The album has more energetic tracks as well with songs like *Come Together*, which taps into drug abuse, and *Electricity* with their noisy and layered production. There’s noisy and energetic instrumental tracks, like with *The Individual* with its ominous guitar drones and *No God Only Religion* with its energetic groove. There are also many emotionally impactful songs here that touch into themes of love and heartbreak, like the all-timer *Stay With Me* with its angelic build up and progression, *Broken Heart* and its beautiful string section, and *Cool Waves* with its orchestral chops and choir. However, the 17 minute closer *Cop Shoot Cop..* is a groovy blues track that devolves into a noisy mess of sound. It’s a jarring ending in the best way possible, and it leaves a very memorable mark on an album with many. With all that said, I really can’t emphasize my love for this album enough. It means a lot to me and is a stone cold classic. Its ethereal sound, clean production, ambition, emotional lyricism and songwriting, and much more make this one of my favorite albums of all time. *Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space* is truly an album experience that I’ll never forget, and one that I wish to share with more people. I really recommend giving this one a listen, it’s amazing to say the least. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, 10 Favorite Tracks: Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space, Come Together, I Think I’m In Love, All of My Thoughts, Stay With Me, Electricity, Home of the Brave, The Individual, Broken Heart, No God Only Religion, Cool Waves, Cop Shoot Cop…

I finally succumbed to the Spiritualized hype on this album's successor, Let It Come Down. An album I loved and played a lot in my teenage years. I even managed to scratch it on my favourite track, Stop Your Crying and was forced to buy it a second time. It was only a few years later that I finally made time to rummage back into the critically adored Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space. I was an avid Q and NME reader in my teens (definitely helped by having a paper round and an open tab to subtract the cost of magazines from my weekly wages) and both publications seemed obsessed with Jason Pierce and this anecdote about him assembling a band, creating an incredible work of art and then sacking them all before starting on the next album. I was irritated both by this behaviour and by the mags' fawning over it as being some sort of cool rock'n'roll schtick. I've also found it rather disappointing how fixated Pierce seems to be with drugs, throughout his body of work. (2022's Everything Was Beautiful is yet another strong album and contains a majestic song called Laid In Your Arms, which I thought was stunning, thrilling and romantic until I listened a little closer and realised it wasn't a person in whose arms he was laid... it was just drugs, once again.) But yes, I finally bought this album and my initial response was that it was harsher and louder and messier and longer than its dreamy successor and didn't have a song I loved as much as Stop Your Crying. And yeah, it was all about drugs, to which I couldn't relate at the age of 16, 18 or really any stage of my life since. So I somewhat dismissed and have neglected it ever since. The criticisms I have are still valid and I still personally prefer Let It Come Down, but listening to Ladies and Gentlemen... a couple of times this week, I can't help but admit that in spite of the length and the messiness and the edginess and the bordering-on-ridiculous-obsession with drugs, it's an utterly fantastic LP that should be recognised as one of the very best in arguably the greatest year in music history.

Such an amazing artistic statement. J Spaceman makes killer music and has its own vibe and universe. Defined a scene with Spaceman 3 the. Did it again with this act. The album is packaged produced and played to create a full driving experience. Start to finish it really is a spiritual musical journey.

Zij remixten I think I am in love in en beëindigde hun mixalbum Brothers Gonna Work it Out er mee. Het nummer intrigeerde me.

A massive step up from their debut. The only word to describe this album is powerful. Most of the songs are powerful in different ways from eachother, but they're all powerful. The opener and Broken Heart feel like a massive hug from space, songs like Come Together or Electricity are incredibly heavy on the groovier side of indie rock, and The Individual is an amazing soundscape that just washes over you for nearly 5 minutes. Who would've thought that a group of guys rambling about drugs and space for an hour could be so compelling?

A modern masterpiece

Had a out of body experience. Came back to it with tears streaming down my face, googling "can music make you high?". I think I held my breath more than can possibly be healthy while listening to this

HECK YEAH

an all timer from my undergrad days. one of those albums that becomes part of you and never leaves. phenom.

This is a great album!! 5*

psychedelic

*a visible sigh* ok guys. its dreamy shoegaze time. i hate dreamy shoegaze cause noisy shoegaze is better. and im tired. and this album has the concept of being a pill. wish its a hypnotic... but how can i judge an album while sleeping through it? i can't sleep. and holy shit this is so beautiful. i like it. the title track i mean what an opener. on the same level of doing something to the album with how everything in its right place did to kid A. 5/5

Amazing album! Loved every single song!

This really does have it all, it’s got so many genres packed in. With perhaps one of the best openers of all time. It’s a 5 from me. Best Song: Really? I’m not typing that out. Cba

Twenty-eight years ago this week, my family was on vacation. I think we went to NYC, but it may have been Toronto. On our drive home, we stopped at a gas station and I picked up a copy of Rolling Stone with Puff Daddy, who was then one of my favorite rappers, on it. Cover in question: https://www.ebay.com/itm/284352921187 - I did not recall until now that Jeff Buckley and Prodigy were also on the cover. I got a lot out of this one magazine. Enjoying Puff Daddy has not aged well. Luckily, the issue has redeeming qualities. On top of the articles on Buckley and Prodigy, in the back of the magazine were short reviews of albums. And that week Rolling Stone reviewed this album, which had come out about two months prior. (If they reviewed it a week earlier or later, I may never have heard of it.) They gave it 3.5 stars in a review that, reading it today, doesn’t jump out at me: https://web.archive.org/web/20010919072038/http://www.rollingstone.com/recordings/review.asp?aid=27747&cf=1304 But in August 1997, we didn’t have blogs or Pitchfork or anything like that. We lived under the tyranny of radio. And I think 3.5 stars from the famous music magazine for an album I’d never heard of but sounded cool inspired me. I bought the album without having heard a second of it and hoped for the best. I don’t love every second of this album. It is a little long—cop shoot cop is great, but it could still work a few minutes shorter. I’m not always in the mood for some of the rockier songs. I’d probably cut “the individual.” But I know when I turn it on today I will feel much the same way I must have felt twenty-eight years ago when I first heard it: this opening track is one of the most gorgeous things I’ve ever heard, I didn’t know music could do this, Puff Daddy could never. At its best—for me, that’s the title track and cool waves, which is not to say other moments aren’t great—it is an album of transcendent beauty. For that, and for being another one of those pivotal albums that moved my musical taste to a different place, I will always love this album. As the common wisdom holds, you never love music more than the music you discovered when you were 13. Also, big shout out to Wikipedia for this: “The original 1997 pressing of the album features the edited version of the song without the intended Elvis Presley lyrics; that version runs 3:40, does not have the subtitle "(I Can't Help Falling in Love)", and did not need to credit Weiss/Peretti/Creatore. This brings the album's run time down to 69:41.” When I first heard the version that interpolated “I can’t help falling in love” a few years ago, I thought “how did I never notice those lyrics before?” It turns out, I didn’t notice them because they weren’t on my 1997 CD. Phew. Not insane.

From the opening bars this was a beautiful rediscovery. Each track fitted exactly where it belongs. Wonderful.

Amazing album.

Yeah I love this record, what a trip!

This album is fucking awesome. I knew a few songs, but wow... what an album.

one of the best albums of all time

Album title never more apt.

I am surprised just how much I enjoyed this, but I somehow ended up listening to it multiple times in one day and I could honestly listen to it again right now. This could so easily unbearable but somehow the stars align and I did in fact find myself floating in space. Will definitely be checking out the rest of their work.

I've previously said that I love albums that make me feel deeply and/or that take me places. Well, this album does both. It's epic, transcendent, vast and truly gorgeous. Now, half the time that I was listening I don't think I really knew what was going on - but that doesn't matter. Everything I said still holds. There is beauty in confusion.

Brilliant

I had never heard of Spiritualized before today, but I really loved this album. It had so many cool different grooves to it and I really loved them all. It was perfectly performed and recorded and it demonstrates some really inventive writing and musical ideas. The big sound of the horns and bass really made my ears happy. I ended up listening to the whole album three times. Five stars, easily.

the opening/title track is really beautiful. i adore how it samples “can’t help falling in love”. the next track, “come together” is SO in line with my music tastes it’s not even funny. it was jazzy and really reminded me of the tracks on radiohead’s amnesiac. “electricity” starts to dabble in rock and i mess with it. “broken heart” has an AMAZING brass background (shout out to the french horn). this might be my favorite track. “no god only religion” is a close second. pure instrumental tracks (when they’re good (like this one)) make an album really strong imo. “cop shoot cop” was 14 minutes and i loved every second. a really great, really complex closer. i’m bamboozled at how good this album is. 5/5.

An extremely welcome rediscovery, I absolutely loved pretty much every note.

Was already one of my favorites. Masterful album

Lush, expansive, rich, generous. Like floating in the warm ocean or driving through the mountains on a clear beautiful day. Loved this.

Siân score override

Better than Coldplay.

A huge sound surrounds the frail lead vocal which is left alone and raw, overwhelmed and struggling to persist in the turbulence. Quiet pauses and maximalist noise flow beautifully into each other. They do this thing where they're grooving along with as full a sound as you can imagine - a loud space rock band with gospel singers and horns and strings - and then a descending bassline drops in and reveals an entire abyss you've been floating above the entire time and it's pure magic.

Beautiful masterpiece

holy shit this thing is dense. packed to the gills with sonic insanity. it really has a weight to it that's hard to describe, and it doesn't stay in one place too long, even on the final 17 minute track. really loved the things it had to say and what it made me feel, and i can tell i'm gonna come back to this one a lot.

The fivest of fives

Wow what an ambitious project. This was such a good mix of the psych, shoegaze, noise, hippie bullshit that I love. It was so big though. I listened to it on my 8 mile run and felt like I was floating in space. I loved all the instruments especially the harmonica. I couldn't decide if I'd give it a 4 or a 5. Part of me feels wrong rating it a 5 but I really enjoyed it and I think due to how big and ambitious it was, I'll give it a 5.

This was so sick. Its not often that I get an artist or album that I've never listened to that blows me away. This one definitely did. It reminds me of Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem and a splash of Flaming Lips. I loved all of the different instruments behind the kind of shoegaze, classical instruments, harmonicas and psych guitars. They really go there with everything, which made it really fun. This is a band I want to spend more time with!

Not sure how I missed these guys, I love 90s britpop. But they took what Blur were doing and went further.

All timer

The orchestration on this is top notch! Great songs!!

Never heard the album. Yeah, it fucks. Not what I thought it would be.

I have to give this at least a 4.5, as I just think it is a brilliant and beautiful album. The first song is, in my opinion, one of the greatest rock songs written - again, just beautiful. And while the rest is not quite as cohesive as I'd ultimately like, it is an outstanding demonstration of what Jason Pierce can do, someone that has focused on a particular brand of music and still making great music in that vein today.

This is the hundred first album I’m rating. I’ve heard a lot about how good this album is but not a lot about the actual music. Adding to my Playlist - Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space, Come Together, I Think I’m in Love, All of my Thoughts, Stay with me, Electricity, Home of the Brave, The Individual, Broken Heart, No God only Religion, Cool Waves, and Cop Shoot Cop…. Not Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Cop Shoot Cop… - Most long songs suck but this doesn’t. All in all I liked 12/12 songs. Lived up to the hype.

Soul crushingly beautiful, amazing cohesion of multiple genres, and relatable lyrics like “I think I’m in love (probably just hungry)” This is an unquestionable 5/5 for me

I had never listened to Spiritualized before I knew my mum asked me to check if Spiritualized is on the list when starting the project, so the artist was on my radar. When this album came up, my mum told me to tell my dad too, and I played the 1st track to have him guess it. Whenever I see my mum/dad, I get them to guess all the albums I’ve generated since last seeing them, but my mum said I should call him that day. He got it instantly - at the 1st note (I played the 1st track for him starting *after* the first lyric, since that line says the name of the album/track). He then said that this album was very special to him and he must have listened to it around a thousand times (whatever the actual number, it is a lot). A bunch of the music I like comes from my parents, so this made me excited to listen to this album. It also had the shoegaze tag, and I really like shoegaze. I wanted to properly focus on this album when first listening, so I waited until I had a chunk of free time. I then turned off the lights in my room, turned off my phone notifications, and I lay down in bed and put the album on I cried a minute in. This really is something special

yesssssssssss

This album blends so many different genres, sometimes it's britpop, and then it's noise rock, or chamber pop, or spacerock. And it blends all this genres really well without feeling disjointed or random. A very exciting listen, not many albums out there that sound like this one. Low 5.

Masterpiece.

Pink Floyd-esque, but somehow in a more unique way. Simultaneously beautiful and weird, and I enjoyed the oddball left turns this one took. Great listen!

Incroyable

I liked it. Seemed modern. And they are playing at a venue nearby soon. maybe I'll go.

Expansive and psychedelic atmosphere, this album really lives up to its spacey title. This is the best the 90's neo-psych movement had to offer, with long drawn-out passages with feeling like aimless noodling. And great songwriting to top things off, what other album of this genre was able to deliver a great emotionally resonant ballad like "Broken Heart" amidst all the space rock gospel excess? I can't think of another one. Key tracks: Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space Come Together Electricity Broken Heart

++*: Stay with Me, The Individual ++: Come Together, I Think I'm in Love, All of My Thoughts, Electricity, Home of the Brave, No God Only Religion, Cool Waves, Cop Shoot Cop... +: Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space (I Can't Help Falling in Love), Broken Heart 9,7/10

Absolutely love this album. Some of the most sublime noise freak outs of all time, and a lot of really just beautiful stuff in between the cacophonies. Not for everyone of course, but if you love noise rock and/or shoegaze you will likely agree that this is both an absolute classic and absolutely kicking ass.

This was fun! A bit surreal and experimental, but overall compelling and well put together. Interesting instrumentals and vocal work. 'Broken Heart' was my fave from the lot, though admittedly there's a lot to love here!

Heard of but never listened to. Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space. Instantly captures my attention. Calm and serene. Elvis interplatation is a wild choice which works wonferfully. Definitely feels like floating in space. Backing vocals are powerful. Meditative and psychedelic. So far right up my alley. Had to immediately replay. 5/5 Come together. Alternative rock angle is a wild shift from the previous track. Bassline slaps. Great energy. The use of the backing vocals carries nicely over from the previous track. The addition of horns is a surprising inclusion which shows up at an interesting time where my interest in the track seems to lull a bit and brings me right in. Ends chaotically. Interesting. 4.5/5 I think I'm in love. Transitions nicely from the previous track. Trippy beginning. Unexpected harmonica. Vocal effects add to the psychedelic vibe. Hope it manages to keep my attention for the entirety of its 8 minute runtime. The changeup is welcome. Hypnotic rhythm. Doors-esque. Original, will return to. 5/5 All of my Thoughts. Piano and strings opening is great. Really explosive psychedelic madness contrasts well to the low-key vocal focused parts. Fantasticly dissonant, chaotic and large second instrumental parts is a real highlight. Great 5/5 Stay with me. Really open, full of reverb. Western like at times. Eerie whispery vocal delivery. Synths make the song sound large. Electric guitar adds to the largeness. Slowly builds up to a really dense and pleasant soundscape. Really interesting. 4.5/5 Electricity. Organ!!! Did not expect a fuzzy garage rock track. Noisy and full of energy. Bass is mixed really well. Awesome solo. More heavy-psych goodness. Contemporary comparisson immediately goes to King Gizzard's heavy psych songs from their live-shows. Hell yeah! 5/5 Home of the Brave Loudly mixed unrefined vocals over strange dissonant instrumentation gives a really eerie, somber and moody vibe. The noise taking over as the vocals quiet down paints an awesome visual image. Immaculately produced and strongly written. 5/5 The Individual. The noise carrying over from the previous track makes for an amazing transition. What an eerie and frankly scary soundscape. Unpleasant in the best kind of way. A dense piece of noise with the quiet background bass adding a human element. Feels like a lonely wanderer in a terrible hellscape, perhaps the titular "individual"? Powerful 4.5/5 Broken Heart. Space-like. Ambient at the start. Reminds me of Brian Eno's Apollo early on. Distant brass instrument contrasts well to the quiet vocals. Beautiful violin. Really sad. Film-score like instrumentation is unexpected but excellent at conveying the themes of heartbreak in the song. Beautiful, powerful. 5/5 No God only Religion. Jumpscare! Noisy, somewhat jazzy. Great bass. Sounds like a violent sea, the drumming made me make this conclusion. Large with individual elements working together in disharmony. Sounds transitional. Really enjoyable. 5/5 Cool Waves. Interesting vocal effect. Violin and harmonic work surprisingly well together. Chorus feels like a welcome release. Emotional. Church choir sounds great. Wow. 5/5 Cop shoot Cop. Love the western vibes. Delay on the guitar is fun. Crunchy bass. Taking it's time to build up was a good choice. Fuzzy psychedelic guitar is a great early peak for the buildup to build up to. Shreds. Could listen to this forever. Stimulating. Holy noise! Return of main instrumental with minor changes comes at a good time. Horror-esque. Definitely justifies it's 17 minute runtime. 5/5 Great album. One of the best I've heard in a long time. Frustrated that I've let it slip by me for so long. Fave track. Broken Heart Least Fave track. Stay with me

Amazing album and the long instrumentals were awesome mde me feel like I was actually floating in space

floats me back to a super specific time and space every single time. it's not perfect but its got more than enough to make it a must have

Words cannot describe I was nervous to listen to such a formative record from my musical awakening. It did not disappoint. In fact it exceeded. Modern blues gospel. Love destruction addiction despair redemption hope. All in a pill shaped blister pack

Another easy 5 for me. This album itself is cohesive and touches on so many different topics.

Title track – very wistful and sweet. Come Together – kind of plodding but cool lyrics. I Think I’m in Love – pretty good but not life changing. “I think I’m in love” (“Probably just hungry”) – amazing. Love the whole call and response thing in general; great lyrics. All of My Thoughts – like the chaotic nature of this. Stay with Me – pretty nice, but quite samey. Electricity – too rock for me. Home of the Brave – pretty forgettable but I like how it runs into the next song The Individual – love the primal sound on this but due to said sound I wouldn’t be going back to bump this on the regular. Broken Heart – gorgeous sad start to this. Fucking beautiful throughout. Ethereal. Transcendent. No God Only Religion – VERY cool but too experimental for a revisit. Cool Waves – fairly boring. Cop Shoot Cop… - pretty dull.

One of the greatest albums of all time. Best break up album ever.

Sensational. Unique and exciting sound. Sometimes over-the-top, but overall very engaging

So cool oh my god, giving me space rock vibes, giving me Outer Wild vibes. So comforting, so...dreamy, but yet it's completely lucid. A Lucid Dream, as you can say. Got me completely falling under it's charm. 4.5/5 or above.

I’ve had a lot of albums I’ve complained are “just noise,” and I could see how one could say the same about this one. But this feels like controlled, intentional noise, and it makes for a beautifully pleasant listen. I think this will be my go-to work album for a while.

Excellent to get lost in and offers the listener a lot of good variety.

A symphony

Damn, this is a really good album. Never listened to it before and never even heard of this band before the 1001. I previously disliked Spaceman 3 but liked Lazer Guided Melodies, Spiritualized's first album (which I gave a 4). This is just an outstanding album, but I'm glad I didn't hear it in 1997 when I was going through the aftermath of a major break-up. Songs like Stay with Me, Broken Heart, and Cool Waves would have been devastating to me at the time. Broken Heart practically took me back to those feelings, even if it's been nearly 30 years - the strings at the end were just heart-wrenching (and beautiful). The only ding I can give this album is that Jason Pierce sings like so many other Britpop singers (Oasis and The Verve immediately come to mind, and the latter is almost insulting to say, given Richard Ashcroft is the reason for Pierce's breakup). But what it has over those other bands is RANGE - the musical variety on this album is impressive - from those heart-rending break-up songs to avant-garde tracks like The Individual, No God Only Religion (Robert Wyatt vibes on this instrumental), and Cop Shoot Cop. Then there are rockers like Come Together and Electricity. I really liked how a lot of songs flowed from one to another - the structure of the album is really well thought out: the round of the intro track into the rocker Come Together transitioning into the vibe of I Think I'm in Love (which builds to a more upbeat song within itself). Stay With Me is like floating in space (hey, the name of the album!) but builds to a greater level of tension. Electricity rocks and takes you out of that zone. Home of the Brave starts with a calm vibe that builds up to the chaos of The Individual, like a bad trip getting worse (similar to Cop Shoot Cop). In fact, the whole sequence of Home of the Brave through Cop Shoot Cop is like riding a wave of depression and drugs - the only "relief" coming from the gospel chorus in Cool Waves (although the lyrics for the verses are again devastating). Finally, Cop Shoot Cop is a microcosm of the whole album. Powerful. Really impressed.

Such a great album deserving of all the praise. The title track is mesmerizing and hauntingly beautiful, and it's just insane that Jason Pierce created this record basically on his own.

There’s just no denying the masterpiece Jason Pierced pieced together here. From the utter beauty of the title track to chaos of “Cop Shoot Cop…” - it’s just a flawless record.

The opening song of this record, "Ladies and gentleman..." is one I've heard many times before, but I'd never have known who made it. It's really good. I lost track of the individual songs a little, but I loved this album. There wasn't a single track I didn't like! I'm not sure if it was filled with recognizable samples, or if other people sample this album a lot, but there were so many familiar settings. The album was very melancholic and emotional. It had a lot of ups and downs and blending of musical styles. I love the psychedelic shoegaze-y elements. I'll definitely be listening to it again. 9/10

This was on my list for a long time now but that was my first listen and I'm so sorry for all that lost time because this is a masterpiece.

This was so close to being a 5 star album!!! I really really liked this, but I think some parts of it just went on a little too long. But I will DEFINITELY be revisiting. Actually, you know what? It's getting 5 stars.

i had heard the title track, which i think is Fine, but i really enjoyed the rest of the album. this may be one of my top 10 new finds from this project (for context, i'm like halfway through)

Interesting

Awesome, one third of the holy trinity of great Spiritualized albums. Iconic album art and packaging too.

One of the finest CDs on any shelf.

It was like a film. Or maybe I'm just happy

I was cautious starting this one. This was my third spiritualized album from this list. I like dream pop/shoegaze, but I was wondering why we're three for three on the Spiritualized? I figured that this was just another example of the obvious bias of this list. I was wrong. Why didn't you just lead with this one, though? I didn't need the first two albums. This one, however. It sticks with me. It's full of pain.

Nice and trippy!

What a well crafted genius album. Definitely one enhanced by weed. Those violins get me everytime on "Broke Heart". This album was so good I didn't even mind that the last track was SEVENTEEN MINUTES

It's interesting to see the average score is close to 3 (it's pi lol) I think it's a marmite album, some hate it, I happen to love it. Having a 17 minute song that depends into noise in the middle is audacious, although then again any prog rock fan should be used to that. But more than that it does pull off it's space-y feel. Just a cool album all round.

Oh yeah this goes hard, that final track, holy shit. Heard this a couple times before and enjoyed it but must've had my ears only half open. This album is amazing, incredible atmosphere.

Really blown away by this album. Amazing! 5/5

pick your favourite elaborate, over-the-top, ambitious album from the 1960s-1980s. this album is just that but with all of the 90s injected into it

i love the instrumentals on this album, easily one of my favorites

My favourite band, Jason Pierce, my favourite musician. His magnum opus. The best album of 1997 according to the NME. Does it live up to this amount of hype? Yes of course. Poor old Jason going through the break up from hell with his long term girlfriend Kate Radley (the keyboard player) She is often cited as the reason S3 split up. She wasn't about to break this one up, so she became the inspiration for Jason to pour his heart out and make the ultimate heart-break album while obviously continuing to dabble with drugs in an attempt to cheer himself up. I don't think it worked. How to describe this? Best to say its a psyche/blues/gospel/free jazz rock album. The dreamy first song ‘LAGWAFIS’ builds up and up, and leads to the thumping 'Come Together' - one of their best and a live staple to this day. 'I Think I'm in Love' clocks in at 8 minutes and I think if it was twice as long I'd never get bored of it. Things get more melancholy over the next two songs as he is yearning for more drugs and probably his ex. 'Electricity' is another stomper, along with 'Cool Waves' are probably the most cheerful songs on the record. The serious weirdness kicks in with the gospel/blues/jazz/psychedelia over the rest of the album, culminating with the epic 14 minute Dr John collaboration 'Cop Shoot Cop' it builds up and comes down just like a good trip should. Is it perfect? No, it doesn't even make my top 10 albums of all time, but it's up there in the top 30.

Bangers: Ladies and gentlemen we are floating is space is a long time favorite! I Think I'm in Love Home of the Brave Broken Heart Cop Shoot Cop...

A borderline flawless album. It perfectly mixes elements of psychedelia, shoegaze, space rock, and even soul. Lyrically dense and powerful with gorgeous and varied instrumentation.

Day 30 of listening to 1001 albums, one day at a time. I think to truly appreciate this album you have to understand that the lead singer of Spiritualized, Jason Pierce was dating Kate Radley, the bands keyboard player. They had broken up and Kate had secretly married another guy. I know Pierce has said most of the album was written before this but I find it hard to believe with it being the central aspect of this album. The lady singing on the beginning of the track is Radley. The first half of this album is someone falling in love and dating that person but then when we get to Home of the Brave we learn how codependent they are on this person. It’s no coincidence that the song The Individual is the most noisy track then we get the Broken Heart that has this most beautiful ballad and heart shattering lyrics. Then Cool Waves letting that person go. Though I think with the song, Cop Shoot Cop talks about how much that pain still hurts and how they are still in love with this person. I think Neva Chonin from the Rolling Stone said it best, “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space doesn't try to hide its uglier aspects – which, in the end, is what makes it so damn gorgeous.”

Una obra maestra

Great album ( if you're in the mood for it), though not for everyone as there's some dissonant/tuneless (depending on your point of view) stuff on it.

Is it possible to rate an album or artist you never heard of before with a 5? I guess... I think I'm in love

Um som bem diferente

Holy shit. I listened to this three times today. Totally blew me away.

The sounds are sounding on this one. Really enjoyed Think I’m In Love. The looping is fantastic. Definitely getting Spacemen 3 vibes from this. Love the dissonant impending doom sounds on Home of the Brave. If this is noise rock it’s good ass noise rock. Such a jarring juxtaposition of background sounds to the voice and guitar. Listened to this one while hiking Waterworks on a beautiful day and that may give it a bump, but I was vibing out so hard to it the whole time. Gave me all the feels. I’m wondering if I’ve listened to it before because certain parts feel so familiar, especially the main riff in Cop Shoot Cop. I want to listen to this on acid.

I L O V E P S Y C H E D E L I C S 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

5/5. A cacophony of sound, beauty, and experience, this album encapsulates the experience of a journey through the mind. A great trip album for sure. Even sober though, this is a relaxing and chaotic album all at once. Front to back the album is a classic and is such an awesome experience to listen to. Best Song: Ladies and Gentlemen, I Think I'm In Love, Electricity

This is simply a terrific album. This was a new one for me and is among the best I’ve heard since I started this project. This is an album I will be putting into my personal rotation. That is perhaps the highest compliment I can pay this album is that I want to hear it again.

This is really good

Really really good. Larger than life feeling from front to back. Incredibly consistent all the way through. So so so good.

best song: ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space

A pioneer of space rock and the peak of an amazing career journey.

Fantastic

First time ever listening to this album. Absolute fire.

One of the best albums of the 90s, my favourite Spiritualized album together with Lazer Guided Melodies which is also on the list (and which is even a little better).

This is the perfect album to have a breakdown to 10/10

I'm stunned at this one. I'd heard of the band before but never listened. Glad this got pushed to me. I absolutely love it. This is my favorite record recommendation so far.

I love this band! They are so great and this is their best work in my opinion. I actually listened to it twice

Never heard of this group. Really enjoyed it. Easy listening

Spiritialized and Spacemen 3 have always kinda been on my radar. I've been listening to this opening track for years, but this is my first time listening to the whole album. Some of it sounds a little too epic for my tastes, but I like the reverb and distortion of a few tracks. Seems like a solid 5 to me.

one of the greatest, most immersive albums of all time

Such a good feelz.

Spacey but not too spacey. Really a beautiful and interesting album.

I've loved the title track for a long time and the rest was great too, especially I think I'm in love and broken heart. Great lyrics, drums, bass and guitar. A masterclass in excess.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space opens with an aptly spacey song that shows the production quality of Spiritualized as they perfectly capture what the album is all about. Then it dives right into some of the best rock of the 90's. To be able to explore so much sound in such a grand fashion is divine. It ends in a cacophony of instruments, all wailing like dogs at the moon. It is a freeing experience for rock, a genre that often feels so tightly wound up that it never takes a moment to appreciate how much greater it can be.

Revolutionary

This surprised me. I thought it was brilliant. Some songs a bit like Blur and hints of Oasis. A true 90's Britpop sound. 4.5 rounded up

Complete masterpiece

I absolutely loved this before today. Will still love it tomorrow. easy 5*s

This is a indy style listen with very thoughtful music, soulful at times

Electricity is an awesome wig-out. Love this album, and the pill case my CD came in.

i've gotten 2 albums in a row i've already listened to before, and luckily both of them are unbelievable amazing pieces of music (the previous was blackstar by david bowie). the title track alone makes this whole album worth it but not mentioning "i think i'm in love", "stay with me", "no god only religion", "cool waves", and "cop shoot cop..." is criminal, as those songs are just as unbelievable. one of my favorite albums i've listened to recently

5.0 + Wow, I've been sleeping on this record, remembering it as more of a same-same Spiritualized record (as many of them are). But this really feels like a full realization of their sound, a true coming together of all their most transcendent elements - the bluesy guitar, the gospel vocals, the melancholic singing and lyrics. A beautiful odyssey!

The title track might be one of the best songs of all time. Seriously. Everything else is fantastic as well, but sadly doesn't hold up to that first song. 9/10

i hadn't listened to this since back in the day. How much did we all LOVE this CD... I remember many a night chilling and chatting in someone's gaff listening to this CD. Great memories.

1 Tablet. 70 Minutes. And not one of them was boring. What an incredible listen. I normally don't really have a soft spot for this kind of neo-psychedelica sound, but this album was different. 4,5*

medicine covers

i don't do drugs but this album makes me understand why people do Favorite Tracks: Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space, Come Together, I Think I'm in Love 4.5/5

I will confess to being a sucker for anything that goes big and this has ambition piled upon ambition piled upon ambition The only bum note is Electricity - a decent song but just doesn’t feel a part of the rest of the album. Was torn between 4 and 5 but I think there’s so much that works so well we’ll go the whole hog

This is one of my all-time favorite records. Just a tour de force of space rock, neo psychedelia, shoegaze and gospel music. Incredible songs with incredible arrangements. One of the best.

REALLY enjoyed this album. I can see why it won album of the year. Not a band I would have ever listened to without this, but definitely my style of music - same vein as Massive Attack and others. 10/10

The definition of an experimental album. What a wild ride through the whole thing, incredibly lengthy songs on this but not bad at all. Took almost 2 years to make this album with so many collaborators you lose count! Dr. John is a mad man and this album was just wicked to listen to!

Another mysterious album I'd not heard of, from a band I'd somehow not heard of, full of songs I've never even heard in passing. I often get worried when an album like that comes up on my list, but I was very pleasantly surprised! This was an excellent album. A transcendental blend of 60s/70s psychedelia and 90s britpop. I think this would have been a life-changing experience under the influence of psychedelics - I'll certainly keep this album in mind if I ever get the opportunity. On researching this after listening, I discovered the amazing presentation of the limited edition CD of this - A mock prescription medicine box, complete with an informational leaflet outlining how to administer this "medicine", and a huge blister pack containing the CD. Possibly the coolest limited edition album I've ever seen. Favourite: Electricity

Fav tracks: title track, I think I’m in love, all of my thoghts, electricity, the individual, Cop shoot Cop. 10/10

Minimal krautrock/shoegaze/psychedelic songs, with massive (and noisy) orchestral arrangements. The thing that elevates this particular album is the raw emotion of the lyrics. The hurt of lost love, compounded by an unhealthy relationship with drugs, leaves the narrator of this extended suite completely laid bare and vulnerable. The emotion is exhausted, sung in a deadpan delivery as an exhausted calm after the (musical) storm. I was a bit obsessed with this record when it first came out, and I listened to it on continuous play for probably a year. I love that the songs are quite simple, yet played on this maximalist scale. A masterpiece.

Toppenalbum

Initially I was going to go through and write a few sentences about which songs I liked on this album but this album is an album you sit down and listen to as a collective. A beautiful spacey ethereal album with amazing production each song as gripping as the next highly recommend will definitely come back to this 5/5.

Classic

This is one of my all-time favorite albums. I love the layering of different sounds. I think this is such a wonderful album. Too many good songs to last.

Very good, lots of good implementation of noise, use of harmonica and noise seems very much like it inspired king gizzard’s (see no god only religion)

A mind-blowingly beautiful space rock album, I loved the wide array of instrumentation and the lush sound of it. One of my favourites albums from the 1990s for sure.

Just a beautiful album. Loved since I first heard it many years ago.

A kaleidoscopic mirage of love and heartbreak, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space will always be considered Spiritualized's magnum opus. Retreats into bombastic rock and rolling free jazzed gospel hymns pay off in quite the spectacular fashion that beggars belief. It is quite fitting that it came out in a year where British rock, after years toiling in the nationalist waters that produced petty rivalries and cringe-inducing forays into brash backwardness, was rediscovering its penchant for producing forward-thinking music that forced musicians to look inward and outward for improvement and Spiritualized was a part of that. All that was needed was a little bit of love to take the pain away. Turns out that we can give a lot of it for this.

The perfect review (not mine) The music is alternately quiet and fearsome, feathery light and sonically punishing. Several of the songs are at war with their own structure and end without clear resolution; the mad-scientist feel is often a kind of beautiful cacophony. Describing the album as prog-gospel would be a stretch, but not by much. Listen to Ladies and Gentlemen on headphones and you’ll develop a lump in your throat and may take up smoking again. It’s Wish You Were Here recorded by a guy who had his heart stepped on and has displayed it for all to see. Not every song explicitly pines for what was taken from Pierce, although tracks like “Broken Heart” keep listeners on that path

This was a surprise. I saw the long length and wasn't looking forward to that, but this hit me in the right spot. I've become recently a bigger fan of shoegaze and this is labeled as shoegaze so that explains why I liked it. Going to check out their other stuff based on how much I enjoyed this.

I saw this album pop up too many times, but just haven’t figured out the right time to listen to. After giving it my first listen, I can say that it lives up to the expectation. The shoegaze inspired track like “The Individual” provides a unique production towards the end. Sounded random yet easy to listen to. The album also doesn’t shove heavy bangers onto our ears, but at some point brings us mellow tunes, which balances the whole album. Layers of sounds & production on this album is just… I can’t even describe it, it’s just beautiful. I haven’t been amazed by an album for so long.

There is something unusual about this group

very cool

Loved it. We actually got this album as a wedding gift from a random friend so was familiar but previously only had it on in the background and didn’t absorb as much. Will listen again, way better than Radiohead!

I enjoyed this album, just because of how much was going on in it. A lot of weird sounds. Reminded me a lot of Radiohead. Apparently won album of the year over OK computer. Also, seems to be before Kid A came out---this album definitely influenced the end of "The National Anthem".

This may come as a surprise from someone who HATED Tago Mago, but I love this album. This is how I enjoy my experimental electronica - in a lush soundscape with some actual melodies. It is what it is and I'm not going to apologize. This album helped turn me onto electronica circa 2002 and I still have a big soft spot for it. I listened to this twice yesterday and it still holds up for me. The first tracks are the best but there are good moments throughout. The album is wonderfully cohesive, which I love. I'd give it a 4.5 if I could, bc not every track is amazing. But it's so solid.

Pretentious as he'll but I loved this, to nitpick the last half is weaker and the last 17 min song is a bit too long, but regardless I would be happy to own this

From my CHILDHOOD

Wow I had never heard of this band before. This album really is something special, a real sonic & emotional experience such a mix of genres but still seems to work so well. A true masterpiece, I know I will be listening to this a lot in the future and doing a deeper dive into Spiritualized other albums.

I now have a deep, dire need for more gospel-choir-ridden space rock in my life.

HL: “Broken Heart”, “Cool Waves” August 23 2022

5 Stars because I had an amazing time watching some of their set when they played this album at a festival.

I had the special edition of this, where the CD was contained in a blister pack, like a giant paracetamol. We listened to it on the way back from an Unbelievable Truth gig, it sent my dad to sleep and he crashed into a hedge. It's still a great album. I was 16 when I first heard it, and it sounded how I expected love and drugs to be. The album can't quite maintain the starburst of its first three tracks, but it still switches between heartracing and heartbreaking. It's the album Primal Scream, The Verve, and Kasabian wish they made.

Great album.

Bangers: Almost all of it! I really like this shit. Jazz vibes, occasional pink Floyd vibes, gospel vibes, ska vibes, whew. really neat stuff. Clangers: I could take or leave Broken Heart. Bit slow... Vibe: Not sure I've ever heard anything like it. Really eclectic mix of stuff from start to finish and it all scratches me right where I itch.

Ladies and Gentlemen is music about music, and packs enough worship into seventy minutes to sustain the jamming tendencies in evidence throughout. I'm not sure if the vision will work for everyone - though it certainly does for me - but feel confident that there are a few minutes for everyone here. It puts me in the mind of Matmos's Consuming Flame, though it's eminently listenable as an album. Too many love songs to choose from, and I love that.

Ladies and Gentleman, I am back. The first song is gorgeous but the whole album was bloody fantastic. I loved the spacey vibes and weird sounds. I found the cd for 4 quid a couple of days after this album was generated, an easy buy and it came packaged like a pill which is cool

I listened to this not too long ago but wanted to relisten anyway just to decide whether to give it a 4 or a 5 I swear it just hits harder every time. The textures are just so beautiful throughout and every vocal line is either catchy as hell, a tearjerking lullaby, or both

So captivating right from the beginning. I've always loved this album so an easy 5 stars. Faves: easily the opening, and closing tracks, along with I Think I'm In Love.

I loved this so much. Cool Waves is my fave song off the album.

02/02/2022 Sooooo good and unique. Love that I was able to experience this!

not listened to this for ages. you have to be in the right mood, but when you are in that frame of mind, its fucking excellent.

Spotify always suggested the first track of the album to me which on its own I find incredibly boring. Therefore never felt the urge to discover more of this band. Glad I now got to listen to the whole thing! It's great, rocking, noisy weird good stuff

spiritualized é criminalmente subestimado. a primeira track é coisa de outro mundo.

bão d+

Solid 4.5

I will love you till I die And I will love you all the time Everything happens today And we're out here in space And I don't know where we are all going Baby I love you today I guess that's what you want And I don't know where we are all going

This album had me enraptured from the opening minute. Space gospel, space rock, whatever this is, it's great. It's really unlike anything I've heard before, and that uniqueness carries you through the album, making you wish there was more to listen to.

Wow - an album I always read about in the late 90s and everything have should have told me to listen to it properly. I went back in a few months back and I’ve no hesitation in paying forward and giving this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

new found appreciation for the harmonica (all of my thoughts) beautiful instrumentation in general

Good album made me happy to listen to this music

p820. 1997. 5 stars. Terrific mix of 60s psychedelia, Pink Floyd, Stones, Beatles, Julian Cope, 90s Brit Pop. This is GOOD.

Not sure how I've never heard this album before. It's amazing.

Really enjoyed this spacey album.

Easy 5

Yes. This one is a classic

Spacey

Incredible.

One of my all time faves - automatic five stars! My neighbour in Uni halls during my first year had the cd version packaged up like medicine, and I was always deeply jealous - such a great release! I love love love the way this album flows together, just fantastic stuff. Fave track - "Cop Shoot Cop" if pressed, but really this is an album experience, it's not really about the individual tracks...

Wow, was not prepared for this. I liked the other Spiritualized album on this list, but this one blows it out of the water. Favorite tracks are: title track, Come Together, Broken Heart (my favorite), No God Only Religion, and Cop Shoot Cop. A fantastic album and quite a surprise.

Uno de muchos clásicos de esta banda.

Absolutely loved this, definitely my favourite album so far. Such a huge range of instruments and sounds in this album. Very hard to pick a fave song, Ladies and gentlemen we are floating through space, I think I'm in love, all my thoughts, broken heart, and cool waves are my top 5 in no particular order. But also Come Together is really good. Will definitely be listening to this one again.

So glad this came up. It has always been listed as a classic and I have only listened to tracks here and there. Definitely one for the vinyl list!

Mal comecei a ouvir e já achei MARAVILHOSO

Loved this! Similar to Phish.

Wall of sound Grandiose

Really liked this one. Strong elements of shoe gaze. Slow burner wall of sound

Great experience with the various sounds and styles.

4.5-5. Cool

A really good album, I love the title song and Broken Heart the most.

I was never obliged to listen to the whole album. Now after listening to it end to end I like it more than I thought I would

Great album. Fav tracks: Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space RYM: Y (#821) Saved a song: N

Wow. Clearly very slickly produced. First song was very promising but then it seemed to melt into the background and then came Broken Heart and I was woken from my slumber. And then Cop Shoot Cop. Amazing and worth several listens. Right now, I think about half the songs are unremarkable, but after a few more listens I might like them all. Certainly the list of good-great songs just gets longer as I listen to it more. Giving it a four but suspecting I will rerate to a 5 someday…

As others have pointed out, this album comes off as a bit excessive at times. That said, this was a fun listen while drinking coffee in the morning.

Another record where the artwork is better than the album, but this record's artwork is a fucking work of art!

Enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to. Need to give it a second, more dedicated listen.

I thought I was going to be listening to some Spacey type music but all of these songs had structure and they all had great hooks. Definitely a banger.

In an ideal world, the two Spiritualized albums on this list should swap titles. Lazer Guided Melodies is bigger on spaced-out atmosphere than tunes - the melodies are actually on this one.

This feels like one of those albums that would grow on me with time. Happy to revisit it 7/10

Starts very spacey and gorrilaz like, come together gives massive attack , then goes dark and orchestral and jazz like and ends a bit noisy and velvet undergroundy but a little more organised noise like as if there were 30 more years of musical advancement since velvet. Pretty good! Strong 4 out of 5 Top tracks: ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space, broken heart, no God only religion

(strong 8/10) Holy shit. This thing started out pretty unassuming for me. The intro track was pretty and spacey, and then the rock piled on with "Come Together", but as soon as the cycling and repetitious "I Think I'm In Love" started growing and growing, I was fully latched in. This album is lonely and isolated in mood, much like space. Though it's not quiet and somber, it's oftentimes loud and suffocating. The instrumentals are either shoving in your face loud combos of guitars, strings, synths and bass, or they're lulling you into a temporary reprieve with dreamy zero gravity ballads. Jason Pierce's vocals are soft and measured, acutely providing the songs with context when needed, in such a delicate way as to not completely ruin the immersion that the record tries so very hard to accomplish. This thing truly is mind-blowing in that regard. The amount of detail in everything is stunning. Everything is so purposeful that if anything about the songs on here would change, the balance would be tipped too far and the experience would be ruined. The album is capped off with a monumental 17 minute long song that fades in with dreamy space rock, and gradually shifts into noise and free jazz before touching down with what we began with, reassuring and calm, perfectly wrapping up this 70 minute adventure. I had no clue that this album was going to turn into one of my all-time favorite breakup albums but here we are. It's got a little bit of everything. This is the Yin to Duster's Yang as far as space rock albums go. Holy crap, I will definitely come back to this one as soon as I can.

A massive audioexperience. Must be listened to as a whole. Sort of reminds me of Revolution 9 and She's So Heavy by The Beatles on one side, and something like Kraftwerk on the other. Favorite song: none, must be listened as a whole.

I hadn't heard of this before, and given the title and band name, I was prepared for some bullshit. What a surprise! I might revisit if remember it exists after this is done.

4/5 - Surprised myself how much I enjoyed this one. The whole sound is pretty epic. Would probably be amazing with headphones.

A band that I listened to but never got into properly. I missed this album completely while i was doing life and barely listened to music for a few years. a beautiful chilled introduction to the album and then boom! Come On, Come Together!. This is a fantastic album that has a bit of everything an covers so many sub genres of Indie. I have too many notable songs. Mt Standout song was going to be Stay with me, But I think the shoegazy crying guitars in Cop Shoot cop clinched it for me. 4.5 stars

Not my usual style, but I liked this a lot

wow. 4.5

muy bien

I listened to this album earlier this month during my 1997 deep dive and it really didn't do anything for me. So much so that I almost skipped listening to it again for this. I'm glad I didn't. I don't know what I was doing the first time around, but this is great. "Electricity," "Broken Heart," "Cool Waves"....incredible tracks. It's a bit on the long side, but most of it is good enough to make up for it. Higher than 3.5, probably lower than 4, but I'm rounding up

oh joy, some psychedelia never harmed anyone, did it? this is said to be one of the best releases by this group here... mainly a theme of heartbreak, recorded during some relationship trouble with band members. i honestly enjoyed it. psychedelic music was quite a prevalent genre more than a half-century ago, and this late '90s take on the genre is a nice, kinda more modern take on the classic sound. i think that's the main thing i can say about it... if you're longing for something fresh with that sort of sound and you're sick of the staticy '60s sludge, this album might soothe you a bit.

Inesperada mezcla de lindura con puro caos. Nota: 3.7

After the first few songs I was so ready to give this my first 5. Truly felt like I was floating in space as the name suggests, however there were a few songs that really took me out of the experience I was having with this album. Still an extremely solid album I will be returning to.

Floaty, lekker

Really enjoyed this. Felt like a good bit of variety between tracks, and really feels a bit ahead of its time

I listened to this album today as I ferried into Seattle for work during the sunrise. Really hit the spot. I do wish this was an instrumental album as I find the vocals to be a bit jarring, but a nice listen nonetheless. 4/5

This one has sent me down a rabbit hole the last few days as I can’t remember the last time I listened to the whole thing. Sprawling widescreen emotion, as accessible as Jason Pierce ever got, it’s close to a five but maybe slightly outstays its welcome.

I hate broken heart but everything else man! crazy

very beautiful instrumentals and vocals all the way; I suppose the high as referenced in the album cover and first track comes from this. would definitely recommend.

Dead + Floyd with 90s sensabilities

very cool premise/concept for a band. nice production/jams. Loud, a little psychedlic rock, a lot of post rock, and a cool spin with gospell and, the on the nose but poignant band name. Defintiely the most lifeless live performance I've ever seen but a solid group/album and glad it's represented

I'm honestly curious how the first track on this is far and away the most streamed one as there's so many other tracks that blow it out of the water. Either way, I really really enjoyed this. It's got amazing production and soundscape, like they really know how to do atmosphere. On top of that, it feels grandiose in certain places which isn't suprising considering they apparently had a large backing orchestra and choir in the studio. There are of course moments here that do feel like a miss though... "The Individual" for example just sounds grating to the ears so I'm not really sure what they were trying there. It's clearly an ambient transition track so idk why they drug it out for 4 whole minutes... Overall though it was an amazing experience and I'll definitely be checking out their other albums

I love the title track and after listening to the album three times through like the whole thing. It's unusual, a bit experimental but still fun to listen to. Favorite songs: Ladies and gentlemen..., I Think I'm In Love

starting w a little elvis sample okaayyy strings in broken heart oml love 17 minute song is wild

3.75. I wore this CD out around 2002. It's a great listen and holds up very well

Okay guys, I'll tell you this much. One of the challenges of this series has been tackling the longer records. You just don't have 70 minutes to dive into an album straight every day. This one was broken up into 3 or 4 sessions. The car, the gym, at home. Not all exactly the best places to get "Spiritualized". I'll tell you this: There were places in this record where I felt bored, but I kept feeling this pull to go back and listen to the songs again. It's a record that I don't think can be fully appreciated in one go. But that's the paradox of this thing. We're not going to have time to listen to everything twice.

Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space Come Together I Think I'm in Love Electricity Broken Heart

Great stuff, although I tend to prefer the upbeat pieces to the "trippy and dreamy" ones...

This isn’t subtle. From the drug like packaging, and the bare bones lyrics “little j is sad and fucked because first he jumped and then he looked” and the music itself which veers from blissed out strings to horns and guitars that clash and dive over each other. This is intense psychedelia full of sharp edges and glimmering moments of joy. Narcotic in many senses

A claustrophobic, intense album. I've grown to love this album over the years. Definitely not a album I need to listen to all the time but I appreciate it a little bit more every time. My intro to John Prine too even though I didn’t realize that at the time.

4 stars because it has electricity on it.

Hadn't listened to this all the way through for a long time. Magical stuff.

I assumed this would get 5 stars but in the end was surprised and saddened to only give it a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - the excellent songs remain excellent but the weaker ones weaker than I recall. Tom.

One of my favourites

Ohh yeah this was a bit of me. Really struggled with whether to give this 4 or 5 stars just because I'm hesitant to 5 star things I've only listened to once, but I see this growing into a real favorite for me. I love "over-indulgent" passion projects, I love genre salad, I love 14 minute long album closers, and I loooove dorky space psychedelia. Title track is an all timer.

A tentative 4. I was only able to listen to this once yesterday, but it seems like an album worth repeated listens.

I forget about Spiritualized and then it’s like, yeah, this is really nice. This is my reminder to listen to more Spiritualized.

I knew about this album but never listened. I love a lot of it. Some of it, not so much. Some trimming could’ve gotten it a 5.
