I'm a bigger fan of Spacemen 3 as they had a raw quality that was more compelling to me. Though I do like much of this album and respect it's ambition, it's too damn long and gets boring in places.

Back in the day I loved the first track and when I was super sad at times I really liked "Broken Heart", was brutally sad but when you get broken up with its... yeah. Beyond that, I wouldn't want to listen to them on the regular. As for the rest of the album, I don't particularly care for it, but it's just standard brit-rock. I can't believe this beat OK Computer in 97 for album of the year in NME though, ouch.

Loved this album when I was given a copy on tape by my mate Ben in '97, still love it today. I know it may be a bit noisy for a lot of people, but the noise makes the quiet bits more powerful, and vice versa. It's why Bambi's mum gets shot.... emotional manipulation innit!

I don't really care for the musical style on a lot of the tracks, but it is really well performed and produced with some HUGE sections in some of the songs. Makes me think it would be better live in parts. Love the album name though

I gave Spiritualized a quick go a few years back and remember the songs being spacey and dreamy but forgot how noisy they are too. I guess to build these giant soundscapes and moods you're gonna sacrifice a bit in variation and song structure - which isn't ideal when the album lasts 70 minutes - but there are also times when it really hits the spot. Definitely worthy of a place on the list, I can't think of another album that combines the orchestral elements, band elements and general noise in the same way.

It may require a few more listens, but I'm finding it a bit boring. First track and Broken Heart have been the best. Also, matching Buck Owens' efforts in 'earliest mention of the album title within the album'

Nice enough background music (listened whilst cracking on with some work one afternoon). Doesn't do enough for me to lift it into the "elite" category though.

Spiritualized's 4th and the most known album (1997). Great neo-psychedelia with noise sounds.

Very nice album

Amazingly, the album features a string quartet, a mixed choir and a brass section. The title track is a de facto classical sonata, solemn and elegant. The composition is but a minor detail compared to the effort and care with which the songs have been arranged and produced. The question that remains to be answered is whether it is art or technique. Really good album, not sure why I didn't get into it at the time. Title track, come together, and electricity were my favourite songs.

A psychedelic wall of sound with elements of drone, gospel, classical and jazz. In parts its brilliant, in other parts it’s a bloated and self-indulgent mess. It’s overly long as well, ‘Cop Shoot Cop’ being a major culprit coming in with a 17-minute runtime. In the end these flaws in execution cause the album to fall short of its ambition.

It wasn't my jam. I do enjoy some alternative rock but space rock is not something I have listened to much before. I would give it 3/5 because there were some good tracks on the album but overall not really my cup of tea.

What a strange record... Sometimes almost sounds like a generic britpop, but then all the orchestrations go in. I'll definitely give it one more spin somewhen... definitely maybe.

Did not enjoy the first two tracks, so I stopped listening

One of my all time faves - automatic five stars! My neighbour in Uni halls during my first year had the cd version packaged up like medicine, and I was always deeply jealous - such a great release! I love love love the way this album flows together, just fantastic stuff. Fave track - "Cop Shoot Cop" if pressed, but really this is an album experience, it's not really about the individual tracks...

This is what Oasis thought "Be Here Now" would sound like.

When you have to pause the album to have a break three times, you know it's not a good sign.

Minimal krautrock songs, with massive (and noisy) orchestral arrangements. The thing that elevates this particular album is the raw emotion of the lyrics. then hurt of lost love, compounded by an unhealthy relationship with drugs, leaves the narrator of this extended suite completely laid and vulnerable. The emotion is exhausted, sung in a deadpan delivery as an exhausted calm after the (musical storm). A masterpiece.

chaotic psychedelic space rock.

The opening track is earth shatteringly beautiful and one I've loved for ages. I never got far into the rest of the album before though. Come Together is good, but a bit sludgy, like Primal Scream at their dullest. I Think I'm in Love won me back again though, beautiful and layered and textural and sad. By All Of My Thoughts I'm starting to wonder if every track really needs a full wall of sound freakout - it leaves a lot of the songs feeling a bit too similar. Final thoughts - every time this goes slow and vulnerable, it's amazing. Every time it tries to be 'rock and roll' it's dull. Had three tracks been dropped it'd be a five star album.

This one was pretty fucking cool. I'm gonna recommend this one to my future self when I took a look over these in a few years. Lots of sounds bro, listen again.

Wow, was not prepared for this. I liked the other Spiritualized album on this list, but this one blows it out of the water. Favorite tracks are: title track, Come Together, Broken Heart (my favorite), No God Only Religion, and Cop Shoot Cop. A fantastic album and quite a surprise.

The title track is so good, I went on YouTube where some fella had put together a one hour loop of it. There are a few more long and explorative numbers on this album which I enjoyed so I will certainly be playing this more.

Reminiscent of other contemporary stuff like Happy Mondays mixed with a shoegazy space rock vibe. I found it pretty irritating to be honest.

An abject disappointment following 'Melodies' two years earlier. The lack of a strong rhythm section and any kind of melodic variation does make it feel like you're floating in space, but more in a 'god this is boring' kind of way rather than anything exciting.

Slow, didn't finish

This certainly wasn't a good trip, and also wasn't eventful enough to at least be a bad one. Listening to it felt like trying to simulate a trip in a doctor's waiting room. The title track is undeniably gorgeous and I Think I'm In Love is another early highlight with the call and response vocals and repetitive groove... aside from that it dissolved into faux-psych mush. I'm normally a sucker for orchestral, bombastic production, but here it all just felt a little too indistinct, lacking clarity or dynamics. I was finished off by the 17-minute Cop Shoot Cop, which did not seem to earn its long running time at all. I'm intrigued to try further listens in case this moves up, for a first one this is unfortunately getting 2*.

Pretty interesting alternative album. Felt like it had some Pink Floyd influences on some tracks. Never really felt like any track stood out but it was a pretty easy listen and maybe one I’d revisit. 6.1/10

Este disco cambió por mucho mi percepción al grado que creo que aquí si hay un disco esencial para que la gente conozca y podrían haber obviado el otro, al punto que después de escuchar más música de la "banda" (porque en sí es proyecto de una persona nada más) es de esas bandas de "culto" que podría hacerme fan. Creo que la palabra correcta para el disco es cinemático, es una mezcla de música ambiental, rock y estilos que no se encuentra en otro lugar. En realidad esa etiqueta de "space rock" no podría quedar de otra manera. Cada canción como si fuera una pintura distinta con letras sinceras, emocionalmente desnudas y un sonido general psicodélico elevado a la grandeza de un coro. Una canción puede repetir una y otra vez cómo solo necesita un poco de amor para que baje un poco el dolor mientras que a la siguiente recita letras clásicas de Elvis. Quisiera casi hablar de canción por canción pero sería demasiado largo e incluso es como quitarle la "sorpresa." Mi parte favorita el cierre majestuoso de Cop Shoot Cop con un delicioso piano de Dr. John, estática, un sonido de Nueva Orleans en purgatorio que se degrada y termina en un ruido majestuoso perfectamente realizado. Una gran sorpresa de disco y una excelente adición para mí.

Me encantó que nos tocara este disco justo después del Piper: raíces de la psicodelia seguidas con lo que se hizo con ideas parecidas 30 años después. Nuevamente, un buen descubrimiento gracias a la lista, porque nunca había oído a Spiritualized y me quedo con la cosquilla de buscar y escuchar más. Me gustó mucho el uso de sampleos y efectos en las voces, las guitarras y las atmósferas que generan. La primera rola que es casi casi un cover a Elvis fue mi favorita (ojo, en una versión del disco cambian la letra, pero en el remaster volvieron a la letra original de Elvis). Mi único 'pero' es que se vuelve largo: 70 minutos que podrían ser un poquito menos, en especial porque la última canción podría durar la mitad. No es mala, pero incluso llegué a sentir que la tenía en loop sin querer, y no… solo es que es laaaaarga.

Despite the claim of spiritualisation, I found myself rather bored. The album is good enough as background music while concentrating on other things, but it never gets anywhere.

Parts of the album were far too heavy for me to appreciate as this genre is not my forte at all, however I can appreciate that it’s all probably good music to rock lovers.

I really like this album. It rocks hard in places, is very spacey and psychedlic too a la Spacemen 3...but better than Spacemen 3. Also has a Mercury Rev vibe in spots. But as usual its the solid songs that make this a very satisfying listen. 4 stars

Atmospheric panning on Come Together is trippy as hell. Definitely a depression album. Cop Shoot Cop got a little grating but probably just didn't align with my mood.

Very average...

When this album is quiet I love it and when it gets loud I stop loving it. Loved the first song with my whole heart though. Broken Heart and Cool Waves were also gorgeous. It’s obnoxious to say but it felt very Lynchian to me!

Eh. I know this one gets massive kudos for what it is, and in the psych circles this one gets brought up a lot. But personally it just doesn't really fit the bill and is a little lacking in spacey-ness and heavy on vocals.

I really enjoyed this one. The last track is way too long, but other than that it's a very enjoyable album.

Overlong, self indulgent and often just very boring. Has some nice dreamy melodic moments but I struggle to force myself to listen to it all the way through.

The album title describes the state the album exists in with a mix of space rock and brit pop/rock. It's a lot of fun, but maybe a bit long.

Tremendously good album! Widely regarded as a classic and rightly so. I love it, there are a couple of tunes on it that are skippable, so 4 out of 5 for me. I’ve had this album for years though, so that may affect the rating too.

The songs have very full, lush arrangements, but sometimes it was too noisy for me. Definitely had some neat ideas though, such as the first song which was almost similar to a classical canon in that it kept layering more voices to the arrangement. The vocal style kinda reminded me of the Beatles. Overall not my type of music though...

Si je devais envoyer un album aux aliens j'enverrais celui-ci. Ca m'a un peu fait l'effet d'une prise de champignons hallucinogènes, même si je n'ai jamais expérimenté la chose, je suis sûre que l'enchaînement des musiques de l'album décrit parfaitement le rythme de ce type d'expérience psychédélique. J'ai adoré la première partie de l'album hyper dansante tout en restant lunaire, puis j'ai beaucoup moins aimé la suite clairement trop trippy à mon goût.

I like it good music to learn stuff with

There are no albums which are as expansive and divine as this. Born in the 90s, the imagination of Spiritualized, which quite literally aimed towards the heavens, was able to be realised in part due to material abundance and solemn optimism for the upcoming new millennia. Beyond the exhaustive and ultimately banal analysins of production, songwriting and other technical details which are required in music making, it is a masterpiece for the simple reason that it aims to be one.

I picked up this album years ago from my dad thinking that I was into some cool weird "ladies and gentleman we are floating in space"shit. Album still holds up but is honestly not anywhere as bizarre as I remembered it.

Shoegazing, textured and trippy. I'm not in the same place as the critics who felt this was a masterpiece.

I feel like this space rock album was already extremely dated in the late 90s and should have belonged more to the mid 80s. It was fine, pleasant background listening, but really just not interesting enough for much more than that. I had to skip The Individual because it was too distracting, but then the very next one, Broken Heart, was really good and possibly the highlight of the album.

As an album closer, Cop shoot Cop is show-stoppingly brilliant. The rest of the album however is mostly just ok and quite dull/tedious in places. there are a couple of exceptions throughout such as Come Together and Electricity and as a whole it’s undoubtedly an enjoyable listen, but I still don’t get the hype around this album.

The title track is worth the price of admission all on it's own. However, the rest of this album is filled with beautiful tracks, unique compositions, and evocative lyrics. This was a fantastic album.

Wow - an album I always read about in the late 90s and I liked things like the cover and everything have should have told me to listen to it properly. I only recognised one track so I clearly never did. This is much more to my taste now than it would have been back then. Ambitious in arrangement, lyrics excellent in parts, it soars at plenty of times (come together, electricity, broken heart to name some) it actually builds towards the finale of Cop Shoot Cop which is quite something - blown away and will be back - a lot. I’ve no hesitation in paying forward and giving this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space” by Spiritualized (1997) Never heard this album or this group. You know how sometimes you get high and an idea pops into your head and you think wow, man that’s a really great idea and you resolve to put the idea into practice when you’re no longer stoned and you even write down some notes about the idea because it’s so cool and then you run across your notes while you’re throwing out the pizza boxes and pop bottles and Doritos bags from the previous evening and you read those notes and you read them again and you scratch your head and you throw it all away and head to the medicine cabinet and you take an aspirin? That’s this album. Here we are treated to elaborate soundscapes with multiple countermelodies, in tightly controlled chord structures. The musical objective seems to be to draw attention to the layers. I found myself continually asking “What is producing that particular piece of the sound?” (While that is entertainingly diversionary, it was sometimes distracting. The composition is sometimes a bit repetitive.) It’s pretty, like electronic lace. Well conceived and recorded, it is evident that a lot of musicians put a lot of work into this product. A key feature is that there are so many things going on at the same time, yet avoiding chaos by strict tonal discipline and standard progressions. Also, with plenty of sustain and drawn out chord presentations, the music is further tied together. The chief weakness in both the instrumental and vocal performances is they lack emotional depth. It seems too mechanical, even in places where you would expect some passion, such as the title line on “I Think I’m in Love”. But in “Electricity”, the disciplined elaborations get in the way. It doesn’t rock. Guitar work is competent, but not particularly adroit. The skill on display is the variations in the pedal effects. Flange and chorus effects predominate. Lead vocals not good, backing vocals superb. Often (e.g., “Home of the Brave”) the lead vocal sounds like a poor imitation of Kurt Cobain. The lyrics are pretty standard, lacking originality and depth. Could’ve been written by third rate band in the 1960s. I was really looking forward to the potentially powerful and profound lyrics on “No God Only Religion”. There weren’t any. Damn. The track least afflicted by this poetic malady is “Cool Waves”, but even it is a lyrical swing and a miss. Definitely headphones music. Meant for meditation. I couldn’t listen to this while working, reading, cooking, or doing needlepoint (and I don’t even do needlepoint). Maybe driving. Across Kansas. It’s okay music, not great. This album might be an example of shoegazing, but it’s far from omphaloskepsis. 2/5

I didn't like this. It sounded interesting, but it was noise. I would have been happy to die without hearing this album.

I think this project has made me more critical of obviously British accent singing. There's SO much. There were some cool sounds here, but the whole thing didn't stick with me too much. Electricity sounded like some old-school rock and loved the harmonica use. Felt real out of place on this album, however...Wait nevermind, the whole back half of the album became a journey through styles. It actually made me like it more? Not enough for a four, but a more respectful 3.5 in my eyes instead of a meh 3.

Straight out the gate, I'm impressed by how this album does not waste any time. You want a title? You got a title. With absolutely no delay, the first thing you hear from this album is a woman's voice saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in space." Aside from that, the music is pretty solid. It's kind of a shoegazy, atmospheric rocker with a lot of interesting effects that give it a feel sort of halfway between a traditional indie rock album and a collection of ambient recordings. I think I'll come back to this one.

Reminded at times of Dandy Warhols, post-Achtung Baby U2, and Eno. Tried to but didn't buy the cacophanous jams. Proud of myself recognizing Prine reference on closing track. Album was surprisingly symphonic throughout.

Really easy listening. Not a sound I'm used to, but I really enjoyed it. Kinda like a trance rock joint. Would definitely listen to this again. Kind of a hidden gem of a record.

Great experience with the various sounds and styles.

It really feels like they gave up halfway through the album. Very smart of them to choose their first track to be the only good one.

Didn’t care for this album. Sounded like creepy children nurseries set to British rock.

So unglaublich nichtssagend, dass ich die ersten 3. Songs spätestens nach 1:30 ausgemacht habe. Beim 6. Song hat mich das Interesse komplett verlassen, kann ich unmöglich durchhören. Diese Platte ist irrelevant. Die Musikjournalisten vom NME, die dieser Platte 1995 statt Radioheads „OK Computer’ den Vorzug bei der Kür zum 'album of the year‘ gegeben haben, sind gehörlose geistig Behinderte. Nie wieder.

Not as good as I remember

The songs were a bit too mellow and ran into each other, not really sticking out to me.

Not a big fan of spirituality, in general, not the music group. I did like this album. Songs flowed together and the first song on the album has an interesting cannon.

This is an interesting album. Usually I like heavily produced psychedelia, but this one feels a bit overbearing at times. I like it, but intermittently. It starts to hit it's stride 4-5 songs in. I think if the first two songs were stronger then this might be an album I really like. Also this album feels like it's crecendoing to the end a couple of times, and then it just picks back up and keeps going. 3/5

Reminds me of The Verge + Beatles. Cool use of orchestra and rock harmonica!

Floaty moments reminiscent of the Flaming Lips intersperse anthems defining that 90s/early 2000s guitar-band sound that I can't quite put my finger on.

Närmre min musiksmak än NIN, men vissa låtar var ganska kryddade. Lyssnade inte med headset och tror att jag kanske råkade ha shuffle på, så Alexander kommer nog inte godta mitt betyg förrän jag lyssnat på det RÄTT... men jag röstar ändå! :D

Bra album men saknar någon låt som sticker ut. Blir lite samma samma.

I am a fan now

This album featured 58 collaborators and took 18 months to put together. The final track is 17 minutes long. There's a gospel choir, a string ensemble, and Dr. John. It's a monument to excess, but at the same time, it's about simple truths. I can see how it might be portentous to some, but I think it works. It's smart and emotional at the same time, and it sounds incredible. Best track: Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space

Always enjoy how Spiritualized build their songs into this huge cacophony

I'll admit, I really got into this. It's good background music, but I occasionally tuned in and enjoyed what I was listening to. Can't name many specific tracks, but loved the vibe and will probably be back. Very spacey. Favorite track: "Home of the Brave"

Hm. Quite the atmosphere. For the most part, I enjoyed this album. 3.5

Great album. Title track and Electricity are must-haves, and the back half is appropriately druggy and fuzzy - perfect ending. Maybe a touch long.

This is.... Not my cup of tea, exactly. The cacophonies were at times hard to sit through, but I also enjoyed many songs. Not an album I'd frequently listen to, but one I respect. 7/10 F.T.: Cop shoot Cop...

I liked the overall sound of the album, was really well constructed, but i'm not sure if i would listen again cause is so sad. My favorite song probably was electricity, it sounded more psychodellic than the rest

I think i'm alive. Probably just breathing. This album has it all. One of the coolest thing ever recorded. Those 3 opening songs are out of this world. One of the best album closer ever in Cop Shoot Cop. A perfect album cover.
