It's very elaborate and grandiose. There's much to celebrate among the ideas. Too long though. Oh, it's on my shelves. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ ★★★★☆ (7/10) Total reviewed : 267 Already owned : 62 Purchased : 15 To buy : 1 Nope :
At first I had no idea what this was going to be like, and then the first song played, and I know I've listened to this countless of times without realizing the artist. The rest of the album is mellow and easy going.
This album is great. It’s super airy and ethereal. It’s got tons of variety and most importantly is has stellar psychedelic elements throughout including a fever nightmare called “no god only religion”. This album just has so much going on for it. It wasn’t perfect, it’s alittle too airy and slow for me at moments, but as a whole I was totally won over and I hope to hear more from them either in this list or just in the future.
Jason Pierce always intrigues.
So after a number of previous attempts I finally get this album. Thoroughly enjoyed the post modern blues rock feel to the whole thing. Docked a star though for being overly self-indulgent towards the end. A full fat 4*
I can’t breathe!!!!!
What a pleasant surprise! Never heard of the band or album and now I want to hear more. Deep, atmospheric, complex rock with great production and clever lyrics. Great find!
Enjoyed this a lot think I have found a Genre I really enjoy.
I really dig Spiritualized! This is the second album of theirs on the list and I think they deserve it. They made a new sound (building on work in Spaceman 3) and they influenced a bunch of other bands. Such a full sound with really interesting compositions. His voice is fine. Nothing special, but never annoying. If I could offer one improvement, I'd make "Come Together" either the first or last song. Everything else vibes and goes together really well and this sort of jams and messes up the flow. It's a fine enough song. Just don't like the placement. It could use a tiny bit of editing. 1:10 is a touch too long. There are a couple of songs that could stand to lose 30 seconds. "I Think I'm in Love" "The Individual" and the end of "No God Only Religion" could use some whittling. Overall this is a 4 album that more people should hear.
I had previously never heard of this band but it was an awesome listen. Had spots that reminded me of Radiohead. Spots that sounded like Geese. I would pick this up.
This is directly up my alley. Somehow I've never listened to it before. Love the horns in come together. Very pleasant listen overall. Doesn't stick with me like a 5 star album, but easy 4 stars, like it a lot.
This was a lovely discovery, exactly why I started this project in the first place! I thoroughly enjoyed every track, would definitely give another listen.
I had no clue what to expect but this was a really good listen. A really good experience only ruined by the screechiness of some songs. Unfortunately these experimental albums seem to love making one song sound like ass, otherwise it would have been a 5
This is a very nice to listen to album. I don't think there were any songs that truly took me out, but the whole sound of it is very good and enjoyable. The last song was however very long and not always enjoyable. Still, giving it a 4 for the rest of the album.
Immersive and hazy
I always thought I didn't like Spiritualized but that was great
A really excellent example of what it is. Interesting but not pleasant 3.6
Yeah, cool. Big fan. I found the back third, from Broken Heart onwards, to be quite affecting.
good riddance to the 70s this was great! never heard any of these songs before and also very interested in the 90s britpop lore that inspired it. definitely on the longer side but I got so on board for the journey of this album and how ambitious it was. there’s a lot going on but I enjoyed it (edit to add I’m not sure if I needed a 17 minute song at the end but it wasn’t unpleasant to listen to)
4/5
Can’t articulate exactly why, but this feels like a 4 to me.
Som psicodélico num disco viajante!
title track and broken heart… BEAUTIFUL, but some tracks were chaotic. maybe that’s the point. will have to relisten. the last song was so long??
I dig it, but it's kind of like of The Flaming Lips only did the jam parts.
Me gustó mucho! Pero algunas canciones no son mi estilo
Big fan, I love the vibes. 17 minute song goes crazy btw
I really liked this one. Spacey and a little bit of psychedelic showcase with a touch of Brit pop.
Enjoyable. Listened to it twice.
I enjoyed this a lot more than the 1992 album from this band, which popped up a few months ago. It's still a bit like Manchester indie pop crossed with prog rock, but last time I said it was like the dullest bits of each genre. Here, they seem to have hit their stride and I was much more engaged. I'm also still puzzled why I don't remember this band at all 🤷🏻♀️
Admittedly, I was a bit worried going into this one since my last shoegaze assignment (loveless) ended up being less enjoyable than I anticipated, but actually liked LAGWAFIS a lot! First off, I wasn't at all surprised to find out that the two albums shared an engineer in Darren Allison – they both have a blurry, foggy mixing style that obscures key musical elements (though the ways each album goes about that are a little different). I guess the reason that approach works for me on this particular project is that there's a narrative reason for it – it's trying to evoke feelings of heartbreak, spiritual longing and drug addiction/withdrawal through that "spacey" sound. It provides an extra layer of immersion that wouldn't have been possible through a cleaner mix. I love an album that gives me a lot to chew on if I want to come back to it in the future and that's definitely the case here! While I didn't think it was absolutely perfect on my first listen, I'll be more than happy to put it on again. If I ever happen to spot it at a record store, choosing to buy a copy will probably be the easiest decision of my day! Highlights: Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space, Come Together, All of My Thoughts, Electricity, Home of the Brave, The Individual, Broken Heart, No God Only Religion, Cop Shoot Cop...
I didn’t like this quite as much as I thought I might, though it was still very good. I think I was expecting something more along the lines of Tangerine Dream (more evocative of a “floating in space” kind of feeling). This was more diverse and more experimental than I anticipated, and I was surprised how many tracks had vocals (almost all of them). I’ll probably revisit this! Favorites: Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, Broken Heart, Cool Waves 3.5
Even better on drugs.
I bought this when it came out along with OK Computer It’s fair to say the other album has had more plays over the intervening years! It’s intriguing as I always thought the reviews were much better than the product, but on revisiting it I like it much more now than back then, go figure!
I've spent a lot of time with this album over the years, and I still haven't formed a firm opinion of it. Sometimes, it feels like the excess is a sleight-of-hand disguising mediocre songwriting. More often, the scope and grandeur sweep me away. It is a perfect stress test of the Picasso quote, "Good artists copy; great artists steal." Is Jason Pierce copying and hiding it under layers of unnecessary sound? Or is he stealing and making it his glorious own? Either way, "Broken Heart" is always perfect. There are days when I'd give this three stars, and days when I'd give it four, maybe even five. Today was a three-star listen, but my three-star listens never seem to dissuade me from revisiting it regularly, so I'll go with four. I recommend listening with patience, dedication, and good headphones.
Super interesting listen. Quite a variety of sounds. Worth a revisit.
Wasn't familiar with "space rock" but yeah it's pretty damn good.
1/8/26. Have listened to this album in the past, and still sounds great. One of the more unique albums as it challenges me to stay in the moment and enjoy the soundscapes instead of looking for progression. May have been responsible for getting me into experimental music.
The album is so good for getting high
I like the overall vibe and the instrumentals and the long form few lyrics songs, only complaint is the last song felt a little unnecessary
Morceau notable : Electricity
“Though I have a broken dream I’m too busy to be dreaming of you There’s a lot of things that I gotta do Lord, I have a broken dream” A really nice surprise this one. I’d heard the album mentioned in passing but it was not firmly on my radar. It feels like an amalgamation of a lot of the sounds coming out of British rock music at the time. The vocal delivery is at times very Britpop but has shades of Madchester on the slower chilled out tracks where the echo and reverb are employed. The structure of the tracks is in places more experimental but there are also some traditional ABAB type songs in here. The music becomes more chaotic as the album goes on and there are places where it is almost in free time with the horns doing their own thing over the top of the rest of the mix. We are occasionally treated to backing vocals from a choir which adds a warmth and depth to the songs where they feature. The strings on “Broken Heart” are wonderful and the lyrics devastating. The closing “Cop Shoot Cop…” is a 16-minute epic which exchanges bluesy guitar and piano-led choruses and verses with loud distorted guitar based interludes. The interludes crescendo around the middle of the track and you can hear audible strain in the bass playing before the band brings everything back to the main theme to finish. A really interesting psychedelic experimental rock album which brings together a lot of influences very well.
Ok this is so beautiful
Spiritualized: Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space Jason Pierce’s 1997 magnum opus is less of an album and more of a spiritual exorcism. After multiple deep listens, it’s clear that the LP’s greatest strength lies in its ability to bridge the gap between clinical coldness and raw, human vulnerability. Pierce explores the dizzying highs of devotion and the crushing lows of heartbreak with a production style that feels both cavernous and intimate. The "gloomy" wall-of-sound production acts as a psychedelic vessel, carrying the listener through a landscape of gospel choirs and distorted brass that reaches deep into the listener's psyche. The lyrics are startlingly conscious, stripping away ego to reveal the physiological toll of longing. However, the album’s grandiosity is a double-edged sword; its massive runtime occasionally slips from "immersive" into "indulgent." There are stretches where the momentum stalls, leaving the listener adrift in a vacuum that feels slightly hollow. Yet, even with these moments of fatigue, the album remains a towering achievement in emotional honesty. My favourite track that I kept coming back to was the title track, Ladies and Gentlemen we're floating in space and Cool Waves
9/10 Favourite: I Think I'm In Love Least Favourite: The Individual
Lush instrumentals, vocals are a little hit or miss. But really enjoyed it overall
A lot is happening and yet not much is happening. This guy's vocals are pretty humdrum and sometimes it feels like he's singing about nothing. But the music is interesting and changes often, sometimes in a chaotic and weirdly overlapping way, but I'm not mad about it. 3.5/5
Laser guided melodies is better in my humble opinion. But this is still up there.
A spectacular album that feels timeless and has held up to many listens. It is heady, heavenly, yet feels grounded in its effects and simple themes, never going too far out of reach. It's one where you can really just sit back and go for the ride. That said, there is a lot of "sameness" from track to track, and I would say that it does start to drag toward the middle, unless you're under the influence. There are songs that I seek out from this album, but I rarely if ever listen to the whole thing. The closing track "Cop Shoot Cop..." remains one of my favorite songs ever, with the simple groove, biting lyrics, and slow burn to a psychedelic chaos of guitars and drums. "There's a hole in my arm where all the money goes...". The album really couldn't have ended with a better piece, and leaves you wanting more despite already having 17 mins of that song alone.
Yeah, that was good album.
Never heard of Space Rock before, but I like Space and I like Rock so I guess that makes me a fan. Absolutely loving the shoegaze-y tones on this record. Every guitar part sounds punchy and interesting, and the way they mix in some brass and string instruments to a few songs, really complements that wall of distortion being thrown at you. The record drags a bit in the middle, but starts and finishes very very strong. Favorites are the title track, Come Together, Broken Heart, and Cool Waves.
Best way to describe this album is expansive. Everything here is huge. I really like this album. The softer elements are really complemented by the use of orchestral instrumentation. Cop Shoot Cop… is a behemoth. Favorite songs were the title track, Come Together, I Think I’m In Love, Electricity, Broken Heart, and Cop Shoot Cop…
fucking lekkere chille vibes. Ik zou alleen the individual niet repeaten Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space ene Electricity zijn playlists ingegaan
First few songs feel like if Gorillaz went for a bit more King Crimson-esque route. Which is makes for a very cool and fun sound. Electricity starts with a more classic rock sound, pumping up the energy. But then through some very dissonant we end up in a slow and melancholic Broken Heart. Through a similar dissonance we are pulled back up again with no God only Religion. Not an album you will probably set up whenever, but when the mood strikes for it, it is an amazing trip.
A very good album. Probably a five, but I think I need more time with it. Kind of reminds me of Sparklehorse if he had a larger 90s psychedelic band ala Brian Jonestown Massacre
I'd heard it before and had a brief period of listening to it, including one during a plane flight (the intro track is great to listen to after take off). A couple of the more noisy tracks prevent it from being an all-time great in my eyes, not because they're trash but because they denote too much from the vibe in my eyes. It's definitely a great album and worth a listen.

En klassiker. Bombastisk, psykadelisk gospelrock.
I am coming to the conclusion that I love just about every British album I'm hearing from the 90's and early 2000's. I had never heard of Spiritualized before, but a cursory reading about them made me excited to see what I was in store for today. The album started off with what I felt was the best track, and it never really let up. There were musical surprises and interesting backing vocals throughout, and many of the songs took you on little journeys so you never knew where they'd end up. While I don't think this is a perfect album (maybe a bit too long), I loved all of the effort that was put into each track. Tomorrow will be album 200 for me. I wondered if I'd still be interested in this exercise by the time I got to this point, and the answer is a resounding yes. Albums like this are the reason I keep wanting to come back for more.
3.5 - Good
Cop Shoot Cop.
7.6/10
Can't believe I've never heard this before. Big Pink Floyd and Radiohead (ok computer era) vibes. I'll definitely be coming back to this one.
8/10
Sounds like if the moody blues was a radiohead. Will put it on if i get my heart broken :'B
This is a unique and pretty album. There is this sadness and coldness in the songs like Stay with Me and Broken Heart, but then the lush strings bring a beauty to it. It makes me want to be on the couch during a snowstorm, drinking hot chocolate and contemplating the fire. Then there are song like Electricity which are a lot more upbeat, great for road tripping. Overall, I like it and would listen again. Kind of wish it had one consistent tempo though, as the swing between slow to upbeat is a bit jarring.
Soaring highs and heartbreaking lows. Beautiful exciting and epic. 70 mins long!
This was an interesting album that I had not previously considered. It was ambient and moody with some traces of Sgt Pepper, Bowie/Eno Low. It also reminded me of Nick Cave/Warren Ellis scores (or visa/versa). I would listen again!
New discovery! Fun, weird 90s feel. Not fully sold, but definitely worth a second and third listen.
This album took me down some deep rabbit holes. Not a casual listen, requires active listening!
So different and interesting
Yeah, I like this. It’s better than their other offering on here. Love the title too. Bit on the long side though, bit of pruning and it could be an all time classic
Very creative yse of layering makes some interesting songs particularly at the start Very heartfelt which brings it up but brought back down by some songs being just noise although I guess thats what they were going for. Enjoyable!
A sonic treat, I had never really listened to spiritualised. I don’t know if it will seem less enjoyable after several listenings. But I enjoyed it on first hearing. I will investigate their canon of work further.
It indeed had a "floating in space" feel which I really liked
Its very good background music, but nothing amazing. Unless I am missing something? Putting it higher just in case
just my kinda cup of tea ☕️ 👍🏿
I was aware of Spiritualized in name only. As an introduction to them, this album is pretty neat. I'll probably listen to this again.
Great listening experience. The band is listed as Space Rock - I’ve never heard of that before lol. I’d say this has an indie/alternative rock sound. Shoegaze mixed in too. Has a pop sensibility - major chords. Nice layering of ambient sounds, doesn’t feel excessive or overproduced. Has that DI to a Neve console sound at times too. Every song is good.
Definitely benefits from repeat listens and over listened before. Still prefer Amazing Grace but I can dig the longer trippier songs, the sad pretty ones and tiny blown out psychedelic ones.
Way better than I expected.
The started out like I expected. Kind of airy arts, and then it gets a lot more noisy. I like that part.
One of the great 'take drugs, sure in the dark, go somewhere' albums.
I bought this album when it came out, but I love it more now than I did then. It could've been too much for my 20+ year old self to digest, but everytime I listen now, I understand it more
A break up album like no other I've heard
The first and last tracks are the best, and they have some good quiet moments throughout. I'm behind in my albums so I see that tomorrow will be Lana Del Rey, and this band sounds a little like the band version of her.. sometimes trite, sometimes awful ("The Individual"), but sometimes great in a melancholy nostalgic sort of way.
I quite liked this record, and the Sophie's World and John Prine references hit the right person. Still, it was a bit too all over the place to warrant 5 stars.
I haven't listened to this in a while, and when I do, I always think I should revisit it more often. Obviously there's a LOT going on here, and I appreciate its sprawling, overdriven ambition. I should've gone to see these guys when I had the chance.
The ultimate expression of J Spaceman's mash-up of psychedelia, strings, gospel, guitar freak-outery. Possibly the greatest bespoke packaging referencing drugs ever, though swallowing a CD-sized pill after cracking that blister pack was a mother.
great album bought it when it came out. love everything about it especially the last track.
This was a really great album. Something I'll leave on while doing other stuff. Solid from start to finish.
interesting genre and album was new to me
Pretty cool, will be returning to it
From the jump, Spiritualized proclaims an ethos of layering and hard work: this isn't any run-of-the-mill production, this is a group that takes seriously the sounds they aim to achieve. That achievement, capsuled in '1 tablet 70 min,' is not only real but often breathtakingly complete. Like My Bloody Valentine, the intention appears to be to fill the space entirely, yet there's always some invisible room left for the advantages of silence. Striking too are Jason Pierce's lyrics, which run the gamut of the abstract and tangible: 'Warm's the dope running down my spine'; 'Just me, my spike in my arm, and my spoon.' Simultaneously the Pet Sounds and Velvet Underground and Nico of the 90s, it's mournfully - brokenly - spiritual. And real heavy.
What are the odds?
I first listened to Spiritualized in my teens. It was actually this very record. I hated it. I was so bored. I never gave them another chance. What a difference time makes.
It's a 4 star from me. Never heard of them beforehand so I didn't know what to expect. Experimental rock and most of the experiments work. The rest is at least interesting. My favourite tracks .. Come together .. I think I am in love .. Electricity
From serene to chaotic, this album finds a way to touch most emotions (or trips?) in their sound. Impressive because most bands couldn’t pull this off.
enjoyed this album a lot. i'm finding it difficult to review because a lot of the tracks differ from each other - some are very spacey/blissful/psychedelic, while others sound like oasis-style rock songs with heavy guitars. maybe that's what makes it a great album - versatility. i liked how a lot of the tracks started with simple instrumentation but then built and developed until they exploded into this cacophony of sounds that sounded so interesting and unique. the album ending with a 17 minute song was awesome.
Really good
I really enjoyed this album, i thought it was funky, i liked the psychedelic atmosphere and the lyricism and the musicality in general
Her mister jeg lidt interessen for albummet. Det krævede to lytninger at få albummet ordentligt under huden.
Never before have men from England sounded so much like Super Furry Animals. A really fun and interesting album, think there is a bit of a lull in the middle but other than that it was absolutely class. 4.5/5
If you liked Spacemen 3, you'll probably like this. I did, and do.
This one really does feel like floating — not in some airy yoga-class way, but more like you have just drifted off in a hospital bed with your IV full of heartbreak and gospel choirs. Jason Pierce took the breakup album template, strapped it to a rocket, and launched it straight into the atmosphere. The title track opens with this tender mantra-like refrain that sounds soothing and devastating at the same time, and from there the album slowly builds into waves of gospel, horns, strings, and fuzzed-out guitars that keep crashing over you. It is sad, it is grand, and it is often weirdly comforting, like crying in slow motion while someone feeds you morphine. What I liked most is how it balances intimacy with spectacle. One moment you are in a tiny room with Pierce whispering into your ear, the next you are surrounded by choirs and orchestras like you have wandered into a cathedral mid–space launch. Tracks like “Come Together” bring raw, stomping energy, while something like “Broken Heart” leaves you hollowed out in the best way possible. It is indulgent, yes, but it earns it. By the end, you feel drained and lifted all at once. For all its cosmic ambition, it is really just about love and loss — and it makes floating in space sound both terrifying and beautiful.
This is an interesting album because sometimes it's perfect and sometimes it's not--all dependent on your state of mind when you listen to it.
mad fer it
More recognizable than I thought. Some of the songs are iconic, mellow, droning, and easy-going.
HELL YESS
Some of the noise and length of some songs get monotonous but overall I really liked this album. I think it will reward on re listens because it’s so jam packed with ear candy.
This was great, lots of variation.
Interesting
When I saw this described as “space rock,” I was prepared to hate it. It was quite lovely, especially the first track 3.5 rounded up.
Not sure how I glommed onto this album in 1997, but I bought it and loved it then and it was great to hear again today. Thought I might have saved the CD, but, alas, no. I think I have a download of the deluxe version with 2 extra CDs of remixes and session cuts. Some of the droning stuff isn’t quite to my taste but overall a fine album.
Fantastic album, that first track is a masterpiece
At times felt like it was part of a movie soundtrack with emotional waves flowing through it. Will get better with more listens. It did have a few songs with a cacophony/wall of noise ending which on other albums would be saved for the end of an album. You could sense where if seeing it live, the whole audience and band would feel as one.
This is an all consuming break-up album. One that wraps itself around you many times, constantly exploding outwards, spinning and expanding into ever increasing detail. It has a number of instruments that you'd more closely associate with an orchestra than a rock band. Textually it is in a million places at once but it never loses focus on its awesome singular vision. It can be difficult to pin down exactly what Spiritualized are doing because any point of comparison seems a little bit off. I can hear elements of Dark Side of the Moon; fragments of The Velvet Underground & Nico; a general sheen of My Bloody Valentine folds itself in at points. None of these parts stay still long enough to pull focus and become an obvious reference point. Dare I say it sounds… new? Unique?
I have seen Spiritualized a few times though out their career. The first time is by far the most memorable. Over 30 years ago I still remember the feeling of the slow drone being produced by the 8 to 10 shadowed musicians on stage suddenly erupting into complete cacophony while simultaneously being blinded stage lights that illuminated the entire room as of a dozen klieg lights were suddenly flipped on. This would continue for about 30 seconds and then the music would fade, the lights would dim for another, the drone would return for several minutes until there was another explosion of light and sound. Thats sort of what they do. Except sometimes there's a drone with no explosion. And sometimes there a slow build to a cacophonous climax. And occasionally there's a full on raver. But mostly drone, explosion, drone. It's was awesome. I still think about it. I wouldn't want to see that now - too damn loud - but at the time... This album is a few years after that. And it refines all the things they do. From the man that helped bring "Taking Drugs to Make Music to Take Drugs To" to life less than a decade later we have an album that reassembles all the tricks J Spaceman has learned. Well produced. A bit over the top. Wonderful throwback and forward looking- the title track was used in a commercial to launch the (at the time) new VM Beetle in 1998. I listened to a lot of this band and the previous endeavor - Spacemen 3. I don't reach for this too much anymore but it was great to revisit. It pushes and pulls and takes you - somewhere.
Somehow I had never heard of this band. Really digging this album. It’s got a wistful, spacey, Bowie-in-a-chapel vibe. Like if Ziggy Stardust came down from Mars just to cry under a stained glass window.
Very decent album
An album I’ve heard a few times over the years - enjoyable without being exceptional.
I went into this one with two differing opinions. One friend told me it was 'overproduced and coulda rather than shoulda trash' (or something to that extent), and another told me it was absolutely epic (rose tinted with, and I quote, 'a can of cheap bitter in my pocket and the choir on stage at Glastonbury!'). I was pretty impressed with Elvis thing at the start. The album reeks of the 90s. I had it on with some friends last night, and a girl asked me if it was 'Blur' and then tried to argue it when I said it wasn't. There is A LOT going on throughout the album. And the closer (17 minutes! What?!) was a bit much! But overall, I found myself enjoying this far more than many albums I've heard on this experiment. 4 Stars.
Enjoyed this.
More direct than Lazer Guided Melodies which also came up on this list. Something is definitely going on with this album that I didn't appreciate when it came out. I was only 16 then so maybe having lived a bit in the intervening years has given me a new perspective on things. Emotionally honest raw emotion sweetened by string arrangements and some almost gospel elements.
This album has a big, expansive sound. It sounds as if it was made from ingredients found in classic rock, but they’ve been mixed together in a way that feels unique to Spiritualized: a spacey, alt-rock style that is expressive and soulful. This band loves a slow burn. They know how to make music that is spare and minimal. But they also love layering their songs with lots of instruments and sounds. And they can get nice and noisy too. How good is “No God Only Religion”? It’s a surging, chaotic, but still rhythmic track with horns! Really cool.
This was a slow burn and took me a few listens to get into it. Seemed to be a bit ham-fisted in the layering, especially in “Ladies and Gentlemen…” (I’m honestly a bit surprised this is their top Spotify song). Loved their album ‘Lazer-Guided Melodies’ from earlier in my 1001 project and liked this just a bit less, but still enjoyed quite a bit.. 4/5
thoughts: this opener is beautiful. this album is oasis if they became astronauts. a couple tracks are just “hey do you like noise? because here’s a LOT of it!” but otherwise i think this is a very solid album songs: “ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space”, “stay with me”, “broken heart” rating: 7.5/10
Nowhere near as dull as I somehow expected based on the title. Fittingly, though, the title track was by far the worst one, and then we dived into this insane world ending with a SEVENTEEN minute long song, which somehow flowed throughout until its vibey ending. Somehow I even enjoyed what I can only imagine to be a free jazz concerto for strangled goose in The Individual. Quite a journey
listened while ranking up in pokémon tcg pocket tournament
The second and better entry of this band. A great art rock album that has the blues. On some tracks you wished it would've been proggier but I can live with the end result.
I can already tell the reviews for this album will be divisive. I enjoyed it, probably won’t listen again though.
A very good album although I was more familiar with the two after and like them better.
this lady was floating just a little bit
The first track is perfect, all others so-so, except Broken Heart which is nice.
the cover and title is nice sound good some boring songs but heck
Liked the new age psychedelic vibe
This was quite the journey. I'm not entirely sure I loved it, but I certainly liked it enough to give it another listen or two to find out.
Definitely grew on me. Echoes of Talk Talk
Nice
I’ve never heard of this band before today and I lived through the 90’s with all of its musical glory. Somehow, this masterpiece flew past. Granted I had a lot going on the year it came out like graduating high school and my life changing, but damn, this record would have been awesome to listen to back then. It’s surprising how modern it feels almost thirty years later. I love the sonic layers of sound that all compliment each other. Controlled chaos in the best way. Damn this is so good.
Why didn't I know about this album. Hints of oasis/Pink Floyd. Atmospheric Dark Whimsical, loved It. It uses lush orchestration, gospel choirs, and druggy psychedelia into something that feels like drifting through space and grief at the same time. Reminded me of the first time I heard Dark Side of the Moon.
A very cool album - crazy energy! Grateful to have gotten to listen!
good but not my favorite type
cool
I listened to this while mowing the lawn. My lawn is 3/4 hill and I hate it. In the hot, humid place where I live, swarming with bees and gnats, mowing the lawn is an overwhelming experience. This album matched it perfectly, and swept me away from my loud, hot, sweaty environs to a heavenly cacophony of rock bliss (still loud and sweaty but in a good way). The only punctuation was when I had to stop to refuel and try not to cry during "Broken Heart." I'll take a point away because I'm rarely in a similar place where I can enjoy a 70-minute over-the-top album ending in a long chapter of chaotic noise. But when it hits, it hits. Must-listen #140.
Heavily lived with this one
Never heard of this. I like the opening song which is also the title track. And now they are blending in “fools rush in”. That track was fantastic! 2nd track is good so far. I think I’m really going to like this album. I love the vibe on “stay with me”. I love the sounds on this album. It takes you on a journey.
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space is nothing short of a transcendent listening experience. The album overflows with lush soundscapes, intricate instrumentation, and an exceptional roster of collaborators—including the Balanescu Quartet, The London Community Gospel Choir, and the inimitable Dr. John. The title track opens the album with grace and power, serving as its emotional and sonic centerpiece. Ethereal and deeply moving, it sets the perfect tone for the sprawling journey that follows. Across its runtime, Spiritualized weaves a rich tapestry of soaring melodies, adventurous arrangements, and raw, heartfelt lyricism. Each song brings its own distinct flavor, yet the album never loses its cohesiveness. It’s an ambitious and immersive work—part space rock, part orchestral soul—that stands as a landmark in late-'90s alternative music. Favorite track: “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space” Least favorite track: “Cop Shoot Cop” – an overlong closer that slightly overstays its welcome. Album artwork: Minimalist, elegant, and instantly iconic—perfectly aligned with the music’s aesthetic.
I've had I Think I'm in Love on various playlists for years and never went to listen to the rest of the album. What a fool I have been. Weird psych blues that build and build and build and the influence is everywhere in much of the music I love. I'll come back to this one again.
85% Best: Come Together; I Think I'm in Love; Electricity; Broken Heart; Cop Shoot Cop... Must-Hear? Sure
English space rock. Floaty rock, epic and euphoric. Bluesy, flows well. Very cool, long album.
An album I've always wanted to listen to but never had the motivation. Met expectations, I'd say, really enjoyed the atmosphere
I didn't understand what was happening half the time but fuck yeah
ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space- 7 come together- 7 i think im in love- 6 or 7 all of my thoughts- 7 stay with me- 7 electricity- 4 or 5. its not good home of the brave- 7 the individual- 6 or 7 broken heart- 6 no god only religion- 8 cool waves- 6 or 7 cop shoot cops- im not listening to all that sorry. good job though. 7
I originally had this as a 5 star album in high school, and while it's still great it doesn't quite do as much for me anymore. It's incredible how many styles of classic american and modern british music this thing is able to synthesize, but the slower tracks do drag quite a bit.
Really liked some parts, liked how it sounded in many places but the more experimental noise parts were not my favourite
I enjoyed this. Hard to tell if im over reacting to how bad I thought it was going to be. Might not fit neatly into the brit pop category, but if we put it there its definitely my favorite from the genre so far. Production is very good. Pulling from a lot of the classics without sounding like hacks. Only Fools Rush In was borderline. Super emotional tracks too. Lyrics seem to be lacking but haven't read through them. Prob a 3.5 and rounding up.
Spiritualized fan but first time I sat down with this one. The title track is killer and the rest delivers solidly.
Had no idea what to expect having never listened to Spiritualized. Enjoyed this and would listen again. Quiet and contemplative to space, to bluesy rock there was a lot to pay attention to.
I didn’t like this album this album much the first time I heard it. I’ve listened to it several times since then and it’s grown on me more and more. I think it’s a pretty good mix of ambitious and pretentious. But overall, after several listens, I find it to be a very strong album. It’s not perfect, it loses steam some in the second half until the closer, but I’ll be putting this one on again for sure.
Excellent find in a pool of late 90s trash. Gems like this are why I started this trip
It's a toss-up as to whether one prefers this or Lazer-Guided as the better record. Both are right up one's alley, with their sedated sort of elevation. One prefers the dozier cuts, the waltzy-lullaby of the opener, the dreamily lulling "Break Your Heart" and "Cop Shoot Cop" – the more ethereal the better when it comes to this lot. It might be a bit of a reach to say this was one of the best records of the decade, but it's still quite good and much better than Oasis and Blur (obviously) and probably holds up better than Super Furry Animals or Polyphonic Spree, their wondrously weird contemporaries.
Album seems way ahead of its time
Floaty and ethereal, then rowdy and raucous. I was definitely catching some Morphine vibes during Cop Shoot Cop...which was my favorite. I really enjoyed listening to this one.
Enjoyed this one a lot more than the other Spiritualized. It sorta reminds me of Eels, but I like it better? 3.5/5
Of the many great alt rock albums from the 90s, this one of the best. A-
soothing, anthemic, and otherworldly. this is rock music performed by truly orchestral forces of instruments; you're not going to find timbres and textures like these on many other rock records. clearly, the sound Spiritualized are aiming for here is heavily informed by the more experimental bands in 60s and 70s British prog and psych. it's nice to see that sound combined with the directness of 90s alt-rock, a combination which leads to songs that are just as engaging to sing along to as they are to stand in awe of. the closer is one of the finest 10+ minute songs in the history of rock music. not a second wasted. and Dr. John's on it? strong 8/10.
Really enjoyed the vibe of this one. Listening to it felt like being pleasantly lost in exploring underwater while swimming and then occasionally coming up for air to remember where you are. Very interesting to have this paired with "Nowhere" by Ride. I'll look forward to relistening to this.
Really cool, interesting album. Lots of different ideas and they are almost all effective. Favorites: title track, Broken Heart, I Think I'm in Love, Cool Waves
Shoe-gazing bliss
Pretty great. Tbh very long and some of the noise songs weren’t necessary but broken heart remains the saddest song ever
Ooh ah! Listening to this was an interesting experience because it is both boring and sounds so cool. Gonna give it a four for uniqueness
A fantastic record from Spiritualized that is packed full of beauty and quality.
very good noise rock album, had strong jazz influences. Overall good. probably a 4.5
4.5
9.5 ★★★★½ Spacy goodness that can. E V en transend the album length
Very nice ambience and vibe on this one, reminiscent of The Flaming Lips, although definitely not totally similar. I especially liked the 17 minute long "Cop Shoot Cop..." 4.5 stars
The opening title track is super awesome with it's Elvis interpolation. After that, I initially wasn't completely sold on the album. I think the more rocking tracks take me out of it a bit. However the second half of the album is really where it's at. It's weird, spacey, and transcendent. Standouts for me were the title track, "Broken Heart", "Cool Waves" and "Cop Shoot Cop". 4.5 stars.
9/10 I liked this a lot. Felt like an inventive soundscape album blending rock, alt, electronic, jazz, and several other genres throughout. Definitely not something I’d ever come across before and enjoyed getting to check it out. Favorite Song: Cool Waves
Verrassend goede nummers tussen
Never heard of this before, but I'm intrigued by the production of this. "90s pink floyd" is pretty spot on, but some of it also reminded me of some M83, the xx, and even ok go that would come later. A great album to vibe to, spacey and chill. It grew on me the more I listened, 4* (-1 because the back half of cop shoot cop was a bit too revolution no 9 for me).
I like quirky.
What a fantastic and eclectic album! The production values on this must have been insane. It's only at the end that it was veering dangerously close to 'jarringly experimental' territory.
A nice and lush album with great sounds and a couple of songs that really punch above their weight. I think I'm in love and cop shoot cop show the best of the album. There are some moments though where the droning drones a bit too much, making it hard to listen actively. If you like the noise it's great, if not you're gonna have a bad time.
I can't say why, but this album hit me just right. There aren't really any memorable melodies that stuck out, but it was an excellent laid-back listen. I'd listen to this again. 3.5 stars.
Wonderful music
This is a funny album cover. I liked this album a lot. The first song is very evocative of space, and Elvis. Two of my recent interests. The title is from a nice book quote. I learned from reading about this album that Dr. John (neutral) is not the same person as Dr. Luke (bad). Also that "space rock" is an attested genre, and related to "shoegaze", which I always wondered about. I think I'm no closer to understanding it, but I do like space rock. The album felt very cohesive to me, which in theory is the point of albums, but in practice I rarely find to be the case. Highlights: 'Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space', 'Stay with Me', 'Electricity' (I want a mashup of this and the Schoolhouse Rock 'Electricity, Electricity'), 'Broken Heart' (very orchestral), 'Cool Waves' (very electro-gospel) Lowlights: 'The Individual' (most of the Noises on this album were acceptable to me, but all of the unacceptable ones were here, on this track, comprised of 4 minutes straight of BLRRRRRRZZZZ squeak squeak BLRRRRRZZZ)
It's a good album. Actually, it's a VERY good album. I'd not listened to this in 20+ years, so there was a lot of nostalgia floating abound my brain. I didn't really miss the EP part of the title track. Just needed a little trimming and focusing to make this an Excellent album.
A gorgeous, vibey album that starts with a song that will always get me every time.
When this started I thought it was crap. By 3rd song (I think I'm in love) I had completely changed. Cop shoot cop at the end was very good. One of the better psychedelic albums we've had in my view. Album cover is top tier too
I enjoyed this a lot, I can describe it as well-produced background music that occasionally catches you. Stand-out: I Think I'm in Love
Atmospheric as I expected from the name of the album. Album was too long but I enjoyed the ambience of it and unique feel so much
Kind or liked some songs
Like it. Much better than the other spiritualized album
Thoughts before listening: Spacey but anthemic indie rock. It can be a little slow for my tastes sometimes, but the album definitely has some peaks that I really enjoy. Review: This is better than I remember. A lot of these songs are a bit of a long, slow burn, but they do tend to eventually hit a peak that I really enjoy. There are also some legit rockers on this album that I forgot about. All in all this is great. 4-stars
-ok so I’ve been meaning to listen to this for a while, actually, I didn’t even realize it was on here… wow it was NOT what I was expecting. Lots of variety and interesting genre mixing, most notably for me probably the jazz and gospel music. Stayed enjoyable throughout, I fw it -Favorites are Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space, Come Together, and I Think I’m In Love
Dense and dreamy, dizzy and drone-y. Right up one's alley. Sprawling and vast and ethereal and maximalist, though one finds it very hard to anchor or get a solid grounding with this record – there's almost too much going on. That's not to say it's not substantive or enjoyable. One likes the liturgical feel without being fully convinced by the gospel music-y flourishes, which feel just added on. Lullaby-esque opener and "Break Your Heart" and "Cop Shoot Cop" are particular standouts. "Lazer-Guided" might be slightly preferred as their best album. One loves the comprehensive, totalizing nature of the artistic vision here. Works in its originality. One groups this band with Super Furry and Polyphonic Spree – as the wonderfully weird bands of this era.
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space is a sprawling and (arguably overly) ambitious album that took nearly two years to complete. On their third release, Spiritualized moves away from the repetitious guitar patterns and droning soundscapes of earlier works, with Jason Pierce making a conscious decision to forsake genre boundaries and focus on emotional depth. The result is a kaleidoscope of lush orchestrations, gospel vocals, and blues riffs, often presented back-to-back in a way that feels daring and at times overwhelming. At over 70 minutes, the album occasionally teeters into self-indulgence but repeated listens reveal universal themes of love, addiction, and melancholy, executed with remarkable intensity. While leaning heavily on familiar emotional tropes, Ladies and Gentlemen marked a significant leap in the band’s ambition and emotional resonance, even if it sacrificed some of their earlier abstract minimalism. - Did/Do I own this release? As an intern at "Major Label X" my boss gifted me a vinyl copy of this album from a heap they found in a stock cupboard. - Does this release belong on the list? It's a rewarding listen for fans of the band, but casual listeners may not have the patience to fully appreciate its depth. - Would this release make my personal list? On a whim, I have to say no. - Will I be listening to it again? It is an album I enjoy, albeit occasionally.
Very good album! I loved the psychedelic vibe in these songs. It's like an album from the 60s released in 1997.
This has been on my radar for years, but this has been my first full listen through the whole album. I wasn't previously into slowcore/post-rock as much, but it has come to be one of my favorite genres, so this is definitely clicking with me this time around. I am loving it and will probably go and listen to his other albums after this.
I was fighting around on what I thought of this and then No God Only Religion came on. What a brutal and powerful song in the best way. The opening track works for sure. Parts of this album are fairly low-key and well done but didn't blow me away, but there are some grandiose moments in here that click.
Really interesting. I wasn't expecting so much orchestration from a rock band, but it was really well done. There were moments when the whole song would dissolve into a cacophony of noise only to resolve back into a coherent song again. It has a psychedelic vibe to it, but markedly different from the earlier 60s-70s era. Good times.
Rating: 9/10 Amazing production, ethereal and beautiful.
first 3 tracks + outro blow the rest out of the WATER but it's still a good listen overall. i liked the mellow bits and the noisy bits :) (7.75/10)
Not exactly what I expected. Each track definitely full of inventiveness, and while I didn't always love the end result, that original approach to each track is worthy of admiration.
Another great album from the class of 97
Great album!
Great album with the soaring 'come together' a moody rollecoaster of angst and indiffernce. Loved it.
Ladies and Gentlemen I have been floating in space!
Spacey, Droney, Noisy, wonderful.
unbelievably good. 4/5
A really fun and ecstatic listen
The title track here always gets high praise, but I think the back half of this album is where it's at. The instrumentals across Broken Heart and No God are top tier progressive psych.
A soaring space rock love letter to heartbreak and healing, orchestrated in zero gravity.
Noh ei mitään täydellisiä ideoita...Mutta viety läpi koko homma omalla jutulla ja hyvin kehdattu kestia laittaa.. Respect..
I've listened to the title track many times, the rest were new to me. Good mixture of sound, nothing hitting quite as hard.
I've heard this before- it'd spacey and chill to listen to.
Big surprise. Never heard of this before, but I didn't mind the other Spiritualised album that came up on here. In parts it blended Britpop with a psychedelic twist, in other parts some really good noise rock, and other parts the Velvet Underground if they actually had talent. Album certainly started stronger than it finished, but one that I'm looking forward to coming back to and exploring a lot more in future. One of those which is an easy 4*, but could find itself going one up or one down once fully digested.
Really quite something. A bit too much in some places
Space rock from 95, the title referencing to Sophie's world.
I like Spiritualized - have had this album since release. This album has a strange mix of gospel and psych with a good dose of space in there.
Deeply contemplative, this album is full of beautiful juxtapositions between nearly cacophonpous chaos and redemptive meditations. The more discordant, noisy sections are often belabored a bit long before the payoff. The more searing guitar in rock sections are good, though they also betray their age. I could pretty easily guess this album within 2 years with no other context, but that isn't inherently a negative assessment. It's really a wonderful work of art.
I thought this was going to be a load of s***. Its not. Not impressed on first playing. But better on second. And really growing on me with each playing.
The contrast between the title track and Come Together is a masterful way to start an album. There’s a lot of beauty here (Broken Heart) and in the second half it effectively becomes a jazz album. It is too long, but still gets the 4.
The randomiser has been kind to me this week! I like this too - Spiritualized really do 'epic' like few other bands can and there's such an array of ideas and complicated arrangements on display here that you can listen to it many times. I loosely pigeonhole them as psychadelic indie in my head, but they're a band that defy genres in many ways. It probably goes on a bit for me to give it 5* but it's a solid 4
An extra point for being interesting
back in the free YouTube days, I was once listening to the title track (I've have always loved it), when my brother pointed out to me that there was this heartbreaking story in the comment section from a dad who had lost his daughter to suicide, having found her whilst this song was on repeat on her CD player... Before reading that, I always thought about the song as a glorious and optimistic way to celebrate us being floating in space and having love as our ultimate tool to experience the universe. guess the words: "All I want in life's a little bit of love To take the pain away Getting strong today A giant step each day" have a much more tragic interpretation for other people. guess I should feel thankful about that. The album is quite ok, a bit chaotic but energetic and meaningful, but we all know that it is the title track which makes it a glorious listen and makes it one for the ages. Can't believe we almost had to forget about the song due the money grabbing spirit of the Elvis State.
Laid back
Magnificent in scale and scope, and in the dramatic build-up of tension. There’s nobody really does it like they do. Arguably, could be a bit more varied, but it’s a harsh criticism for a record that creeps into your soul as sneakily as this one does.
Mixed. Two incredible songs - some mid
really beautiful and groovy record, been a favorite of mine for a while. easily the best space rock ive ever found. 8/10
The first song is so freaking beautiful 😭 I dug this album overall. It was kind of all over the place, from slow and dreamy pieces to songs they just sort of banged all the instruments to. Felt pretty cohesive despite that, and I liked the emotion of it. Interesting stuff!
The seamless transitions from treacly brit-pop type stuff into string-heavy spacey (yeah) ambient into real chaotic shoegaze-y rock is suuuuuper cool and was incredibly fun to get lost in! Great record!
Borderline 5 for me. Love how meandering and noisy this gets but it always feels like it resolves into something melodic and pleasant.
Really fun and cool album, I remember when I was like 12 I really felt like I would never understand music until I 'got' this album... still haven't quite gotten it but I really enjoy it, especially the free jazzy breakdowns
easy listen, ethereal background
Really enjoyed this, my kind of vibe
Enjoyed this. Only ever heard the title track before, but the rest lived up to expectations. Saw these live once but I’d had a few of the old cans and cant remember much about them other than they were quite eclectic. This confirms my thoughts. Very good.
Quite a good surprise this. Best tracks were Broken Heart and No God Only Religion, and I had a lot of time for the second half of the album overall (including the 16 minute ambience at the end). Interesting stuff.
Wasn't sure I would like this when reading the description.... The 17 minute track at the end left a bit of a sour taste but largely I thought it was really good. Very grand in parts, but quite eclectic in styles too. This is how you do a cacophony of noise, take note Trent. I think I'm in love and broken heart were the best tracks for me. 3.5
If any of you are looking to have a spiritual experience, I might be able to help: just go into a dark room, take as many psychedelics as humanly possible, and listen to this album. You will crap your pants from being so mind-blowingly in awe.
Pleasant! Didn't think the UK had this in them during this era
Jason Spaceman is a low-key broken genius. These gospel nursery rhymes are built on simple foundations but contain great depth. Clue is in the name I suppose but these are yearning incantations. Beautiful, tightly composed, tinged with regret and sadness but also hope. A dope-sick hymn to the cosmos. Too long but so what, it's great.
Never heard of these guys but enjoyed this. Only listened to the first half so far but quite cool. Preferred th softer stuff to the louder stuff though
Different but good
Excellent! I'd forgotten how good this is.
There is a lot to unpack from this album. It felt like I was listening to two different albums at once with the amount of genre switching that was going on. It was really cool how some songs were electronic spacey shoegaze then followed up by some 90s british alternative sounds. Didn't really keep track of what songs were which by title because I was just letting it ride. But it was a pretty cool album all the way through. And the finisher of Cop Shoot Cop was a super dreamy/nightmare song that almost had me on edge. Very solid 4 from this.
this sounds like a great album to listen to while high on shrooms — and i mean that in the best way possible. it’s a little too long for me but it’s a great album
I really love orchestral stuff man
I had to listen to it three times to be sure. I had never heard of this project although unfortunately, I had heard Spacemen 3 in college. I found this to album to tick all the boxes. Innovative, listenable, interesting. So for me, a really great sleeper album.
With a second “space rock” album this week, I am still trying to figure out what space rock is. Hawkwind was really just prog with some computer sounds and poetry, but Spiritualized had me thinking I’d figured out space rock on the first track (even if it was also pretty much chamber pop or dream pop), only to turn much more traditional on “Come Together.” It then swings back and forth between alt rock and something dreamier, but even on the longer tracks never feels anything like Hawkwind. Those dreamier bits may have been pretty influential in shaping alternative music over the next 20 years, though, and the same could be said of the more cacophonous parts. Spiritualized apparently emerged from Spacemen 3, led by one of the two spacemen along with some of the other non-astronautical members of the band. I didn’t dig the Spacemen 3 album we listened to, but Spiritualized hit much better for me today. “Ladies and gentlemen…” was released the same year as “OK Computer,” and I feel like those two would be pretty terrific to listen to back-to-back.
I accidentally posted the review for this album under Spirit’s Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus. It’s repasted below. Spirit is known as a supernatural being amongst other definitions and spiritualized is an adjective describing something that has raised to a spiritual level. Spiritual beliefs often involve supernatural beings. Naturally they are easy to confuse. ************************************ Far out man! This space rock beauty takes one on an ever shifting adventure. I dig the layered electronica. It feels like an immersive experience. NME rated it a 9 1/8 out of 10…a rating scale with 80 gradations!!!! How do they ever distinguish between a 9 1/8 and a 9 1/4?!? They also rated it as album of the year, ahead of Radiohead’s OK Computer. I can hear it. We’ve been on a run of good albums lately. Let’s keep it up 1001! ************************************ Now the missing review for Spirit’s Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus: I think I’m listening to the little siblings of the Grateful Dead. I don’t think I was aware of these guys before now. There are times I swear I hear Bob Weir’s voice…or is it Phil Leah. I don’t know, but Animal Zoo sounds like one of them. The album isn’t stuffed with great stuff, but there is plenty to go around. It’s a 3.5 that I’m rounding up because then my misplaced Spiritualized rating is applicable.
Seen this a lot on RYM and I like it but I wish it was more of a 5 for me. It’s just missing something.
I've tried listening to this album many times in the past and always gave up pretty quickly. Not that I didn't like it, I just wasn't engaged. I'm fine with the whole 'space rock' thing, but it just made me want to swap to something more familiar like Flaming Lips, and less like the Verve. Thanks to this challenge, I've finally listened to the entire album as a whole and man has it opened up for me. On repeat listens, it's finally clicking. There are a few stand out tracks, including 'I Think I'm in Love' and 'Broken Heart', but it's the chaotic 17 minute final track, 'Cop Shoot Cop' that really makes it for me. That song alone made the rest of the album come to life. It's a simple journey to start, but it's a wild ride by the end.
Liked all of my thoughts, electricity and broken heart. Last track was also really good
- started off real weird. really liked the choir in the background of the title track though. 7/10 - come together was a bit of a switch. not bad. 7.5/10 - think im in love is kinda typical. its good. i can see myself really liking it after a couple of relistens. 8/10 - ive forgotten some of the middle songs. i remember the vocals kind of throwing me in one or two, but simultaneously really liking the orchestral and choral aspects of some bits. - really like cop shoot cop. like a lot. 10/10 overall, flip flops between a 4 and a 5/5. ill see how i feel tmr
I really loved this thing until the stupid noise rock at the end.
Ooh I like this
I remember almost nothing about lazer guided melodies because it was like a pre 200 album for me but if it’s anything like this I’m probably going to give it another listen. Apparently this is their most popular album and I can see why because it’s so bombastic and melodic whereas I vaguely remember lgm being more aggressive and experimental (could be totally wrong). It’s a great mix of rock, blues, electronica, and orchestra to that made it endlessly listenable for me. Unfortunately, Alabama shakes butted into my music listening for most of the day because I finished rewatching fleabag and had to revisit the sound and color album so didn’t listen to this one as much as I wanted to.
Very cool idea for an album cover. (Pharmaceuticals and stuff. Whoa.) Possibly a bit bloated in terms of runtime, but why care about runtime if you're on drugs (or a pretty convincing sonic representation of drugs)? The instruments are tastefully selected and played fairly well, creating some great space-rock inspired grooves. Really, the only track that obviously falls apart – from lack of musicality – is The Individual. All other tracks are, in some way or another, fairly solid, incorporating elements of early-mid career Pink Floyd (and other artists in the space/prog/rock genre) with the clean 90s mixing and a few hip-hoppy elements. Note in particular the percussion, which heavily favours clicks, shakers, and tambourines over the more classic drum kit. Not quite my thing, but it has its place. And it makes for a nifty mixture of musical eras. The vocalist often sounds disinterested or unemotive, which makes the singing harder to pay attention to. In other words, I feel like the singing doesn't add much substance (heh) to the music. Was there some message in the lyrics adding key political or personal contextualisation to the music? Who knows? Great textures, and a nice variety of moods. (The final track, Cop Shoot Cop..., is an unprecedented and apocalyptic epic that showcases the texturing in action.) This is a huge plus that boosts pretty much any album to a 4 or higher. Key tracks: Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space, Come Together, Stay with Me, Electricity, Cool Waves
Ladies & Gentlemen we are floating in Space I remember Souter having this at uni and I remember borrowing and trying to like it. The only track I liked was Come Together and the rest I wasn’t sure about. I haven’t revisited in the intervening 25 years and I was actually quite looking forward to giving it a go today, now that I’m a bit older with, hopefully, a broader musical appreciation. I really did enjoy it a lot. The opening track’s interpolation of I Can’t Help Falling in Love I really liked, and Come Together was still as good as I remembered it, a great droning, crescendoing track. There’s a certain blues-iness and country-ness to some of it, maybe because of the harmonica that appears regularly, as well as some of the string arrangements. I Think I’m In Love is great, love the feel and particularly the horn arrangement and the slide guitar(?) motif. And I loved Stay With Me and Cool Waves. A lot of the horn arrangements are great, very McCartney/George Martin-esque. Cop Shoot Cop is long, but doesn’t actually feel like 17 minutes. Loved the strings on Broken Heart. In a way it’s not about picking out each song, as they are all a kind of groove and mood layered with, noise, sounds and instrumentation, rather than distinct melodic exercises. Obviously he doesn’t have a conventionally good voice, but it does suit the whole atmosphere as the music ebbs and drifts and the different layers and instruments move in and move out. It improved with each listen as elements of different tracks started to emerge. It is long at 1hr 10, mainly I suppose as the last song is 17 minutes, and I think there was a dip around Home of the Brave and the Individual before it picked back up again. Maybe it could have been a bit shorter but actually it felt like a long suite of songs with similar moods, textures and movements that all worked together. Looking forward to listening to it more and uncovering little moments I’ve missed up to now. ⭐⭐⭐⭐️
This is considered to be Spiritualized's masterpiece. Whilst excellent, this isn't really what I expected. It's more eclectic and sprawling than I thought it would be. Although both are great, I preferred 'Lazer Guided Melodies'. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space Date listened: 26/03/24
Cool album, pink Floyd/flaming lips flavours, worth a relisten
It is fine for what it is. Did drag on a little bit at times but I didn't hate it. 3.5/5
I like it a lot, but it misses something to get the 5 stars, can't figure out what is it
A nice mellow blend of electronic sounds and actual instruments. Very mellow and makes a great ambient soundtrack.
Had never heard of this album or group in my life. Was entranced by the whole thing. It becomes unwieldy by the end and almost went off the rails. But I enjoyed it. A few more listens may convince me this is a masterpiece. 4.5/4
One of my airplane albums
spacey - liked the vocals and the vibes
p cool
Woozy, narcotised music that combines hushed vocals with repeated motifs to lull the listener into a kind of pleasant somnolence. Even the occasional blasts of noise can't shrug off the notion that, anachronistic as it would be, this album would make for an ideal soundtrack for a fin de siecle Limehouse shooting gallery.
I never heard of 'shoegaze' music before today. The album is interesting... had to skip a few that were putting me to sleep at work, but I really liked most of the songs. Seems like an album I'd need to be in a particular mood to listen to. Fave songs "Ladies/Gentlemen", "Electricity" and "Cop Shoot Cop..." 4/5
Love this! It is one of the first albums on this list that I never heard of but fell in love with. Heard it many times now over the past two years. Every songs is amazing. Rating: 4.5
This is an epic album (with a perfect title) combining fragile melodies with lengthy noisy jams. Very close to full marks indeed.
4+ Stars (12/15)
Really different!
This album is just good
Love the first song and a few are pretty good. Solid album
Interesting but long and can tell there is depth, so will need to listen some more
Really good album, not sure why I didn't get into it at the time. Title track, come together, and electricity were my favourite songs. 4 🌟
Starts strong. Got weird in the middle.
Pretty great album. I really enjoyed the listen. Very well written and very listenable.
to me this album kind of reminds me of like, the beatles' revolution 9 meets the beach boys' pet sounds. really cool, orchestral stuff mixed with a lot of noise. makes for an interesting album. i think if i gave this more listens, i could get into it, but it didn't totally blow me away on first listen. still, pretty cool!
Pulling two heavy tumblr-core albums in a row is huge after all the boomer rock. The highlight of this album for me isnt the atmospheric pads and melodies that everyone knows it for - to me its the way the bass player chooses to play in a more sparse and often repetitive manner. Long repeated one-note hits with quick fill melodies at the end of a verse. Induces the same feeling of the best house music songs of this albums time - hypnotic and blissful
Favorite Tracks: Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space Come Together Stay with Me
This is an album I definitely will come back to. The production was really exciting, and the use of brass, strings, and a gospel choir were captivating. I had no expectations going into it, but coming out, I am certainly impressed. This is probably my favorite album I’ve heard in the “shoegaze” genre. My only complaint is that I could have done without the 17 minute long closing track—I already felt that the track preceding it was a triumphant end to the record and this one was kind of down tempo, sprawling, and droll.
Nice
goe begin, heftig af einde
Fantastic Space rock Very long but very good Will revist High 4
Sounded very Gorillaz-esque to me. Interesting style and cool sounds. Really dug the vibes in this one.
