The Verve
Urban Hymns is a bold and grand album, showcasing sublime string arrangements that are sensibly placed throughout, adding an anthemic grandeur to the overall sound. This marks an interesting third act for the band, especially considering their shoegaze debut and ballad-heavy second album. While Bitter Sweet Symphony may not be my favourite track, its arrangement is undeniably fabulous. The short burst of the band's tenure at this point is phenomenal, and their reunion has been maximised to create a space in time.

Hot Fuss

Hot Fuss is a bit of a puzzle for me. I'm not entirely sure why it earned its spot on the list. While there are a small handful of decent songs, (one of which has been slightly spoilt by my Rob's adapted lyrics – "I got toast but I'm not a toaster, I got ham but I'm not a hamster!") my overall sentiment is lukewarm. In comparison to other indie releases in 2003, like Youth and Young Manhood, Elephant, Fever to Tell, and Howl Howl Gaff Gaff, Hot Fuss does not stand out that much. It falls somewhere in the middle – not awful, but perhaps lacking the distinctiveness that makes other albums from that time more memorable.

Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room
Dwight Yoakam
Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room showcases Dwight Yoakam as one of the hottest stars in the New Traditionalist movement, a departure from Nashville's slick productions towards a more roots-based sound. Yoakam's sniping at Music City in the media didn't endear Yoakam to industry insiders and some fellow musicians, including Nashville veteran/genius Steve Earle. Despite the controversy, the album is best remembered for containing Yoakam's first two number one hit singles. It is a fine example of honky-tonk, bringing the genre back to prominence. However, while it receives acclaim for its finesse, I'm not that partial to this type of country.

The College Dropout
Kanye West
Kanye West's The College Dropout is often hailed as a cornerstone for modern rap music, addressing real-life problems with thoughtful lyrics and a well-crafted musical backdrop. The album, with its limited use of only 14 samples, maintains a fresh sound that reflects years of beat gathering.
The production quality and thematic depth showcase Kanye's prowess in the hip-hop scene. However, there's a significant but troubling aspect that clouds any straightforward praise for the artist. Kanye West's public statements, including anti-Semitic hate speech and his associations with controversial figures like Nick Fuentes and Donald Trump, introduce a complex moral dilemma.
As a listener, I found myself grappling with a similar internal struggle I faced boycotting Morrissey for comparable reasons (a man who's music I adore, unlike Kanye). Listening to "The College Dropout" felt like navigating a moral grey area. The album, undoubtedly sounding better than expected, left me with conflicting emotions. The pull of completeness, as a completest (I would hate not to listen to everything suggested), led me to listen, but the experience left a lingering sense of unease. Green Day
American Idiot by Green Day is a riveting concept album that follows the journey of Jesus of Suburbia, a compelling antihero representing lower-middle class America. The album is rich with politically charged themes that resonate strongly, even today. Its era-defining hits have cemented its place in musical history, remaining relevant and impactful. While some tracks stand out as powerful bangers, others feel less essential to the overall narrative. Despite this, the album's ability to provoke thought and inspire reflection is undeniable. Something/Anything?
Todd Rundgren
Something/Anything by Todd Rundgren is a quintessential example of album-oriented rock, but its length may deter some listeners. While the album has standout tracks, there's a noticeable amount of filler that detracts from its overall impact. Slut stands out musically, but its lyrics may be viewed as problematic through a contemporary lens, despite an attempt to raise issues of double standards. However, Rundgren's warm and versatile voice shines throughout the album, showcasing his undeniable talent as a vocalist. Despite its length and occasional missteps, I have deep respect for Rundgren's contributions to music. Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols
Sex Pistols
Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols is a landmark album that encapsulates the raw energy and rebellious spirit of the punk rock movement. From the iconic opening chords of Holidays in the Sun to the anthemic God Save the Queen, the album is a relentless onslaught of blistering guitars and confrontational lyrics. Tracks like Anarchy in the UK and Pretty Vacant are punk rock anthems that still resonate today, their defiant attitude and snarling vocals embodying the spirit of youthful rebellion. The production, overseen by Chris Thomas and Bill Price, captures the band's live intensity, adding to the album's visceral impact. However, while the album's ferocious energy is undeniable, some tracks can feel repetitive in their aggression, lacking the nuance and variety found in later punk releases. Nevertheless, Never Mind the Bollocks remains a seminal work in the punk rock canon, earning its place as one of the most influential albums of all time.

Ace of Spades
Motörhead
Ace of Spades, the iconic album by Motörhead, is a relentless onslaught of raw power and attitude. Released in 1980, it remains a defining moment in heavy metal history. From the thunderous title track to the blistering Jailbait, the album is a showcase of Motörhead's signature sound: fast, loud, and unapologetic. Lemmy Kilmister's gravelly vocals and distorted bass lines drive the songs with unparalleled intensity. Tracks like (We Are) The Road Crew and The Chase Is Better Than the Catch capture the essence of life on the road with relentless energy. The album's stripped-down production adds to its gritty charm, making every riff and drum beat hit with maximum impact. Ace of Spades is not just an album, but a statement of defiance and rebellion. More Specials
The Specials
More Specials ventures into uncharted territory by expanding the band's 2 Tone sound into other genres, notably lounge music and easy listening. This experimentation adds a layer of intrigue to the album, showcasing the band's willingness to evolve. However, while musically skilled, the execution feels disjointed and hard to listen to at times, lacking the gusto that defined their first album. It's evident that the band attempted to push boundaries, but the result falls short of being a true showcase of their talent. Despite this, the album maintains the band's tradition of intensely political lyrics, echoing the socio-political commentary found in their debut. This thematic consistency adds depth to the album's exploration of different musical styles. Notably, More Specials has been cited as an influence on the trip hop genre, highlighting its impact beyond the ska and reggae scene. Overall, while the album may not reach the heights of its predecessor, it remains an intriguing chapter in The Specials' musical journey.

Fishbone
Fishbone's Truth and Soul album showcases the band's undeniable talent but falls short of the higher energy they would later unleash. Released in 1988, it presents a fusion of funk, punk, ska, and soul that highlights the band's eclectic musical influences. Tracks like Freddie's Dead and Ma and Pa demonstrate the band's musical versatility and knack for blending genres. However, compared to their later releases, Truth and Soul feels somewhat restrained and lacks the electrifying energy that would come to define their sound. While the album displays moments of brilliance, it also hints at a band that may have been feeling disinterested or constrained by expectations. Nevertheless, standout tracks like Question of Life and Change still showcase Fishbone's exceptional musicianship and songwriting prowess. This Is Fats Domino is a short and cheery album that maintains a consistent vibe throughout. While some tracks may feel a bit repetitive after a while, the overall experience is still enjoyable and fun. Listening to it, one can't help but conjure images of Richie Cunningham and his crew, particularly when Blueberry Hill comes on. Rhythm Nation 1814
Janet Jackson
Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 is an iconic album that captured the late 80s with its blend of socially conscious themes and New Jack Swing beats. Songs like Rhythm Nation and Miss You Much were groundbreaking at the time, combining R&B with hip-hop rhythms, making them feel like a call to action. Tracks such as Escapade and Alright showcase Janet's knack for creating upbeat, feel-good anthems perfect for the dance floor.
The production by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis was innovative, layering synthesized sounds with punchy drum machine beats. At the time, these tracks were exhilarating, setting the stage for future pop and R&B artists. However, listening today, some of the New Jack Swing tracks feel less groundbreaking, more nostalgic.
Despite this, the album's infectious energy and Janet's charisma keep the songs entertaining. The themes of unity and social justice remain relevant, giving the album enduring significance. While the New Jack Swing sound has aged, Rhythm Nation 1814 remains a testament to Janet Jackson's artistry and vision, reflecting the excitement of its era and the timeless appeal of its messages.

Don McLean
American Pie by Don McLean opens with its timeless title track, a folk-rock epic that captures the spirit of a generation with its poignant lyrics and memorable melody. However, the rest of the album doesn't quite live up to the brilliance of its opener or the iconic cover art, which remains a symbol of its era.
While tracks like Vincent showcase McLean's introspective songwriting, they lack the same raw energy and impact as American Pie. Despite this, McLean's craftsmanship and ability to blend folk, rock, and pop influences shine through, influencing generations of musicians.

Follow The Leader
Korn
Korn's Follow the Leader album, released during the nu-metal wave, exemplifies their pioneering efforts in blending heavy guitar riffs with hip-hop elements, fronted by Jonathan Davis's distinctive vocal style. The music is undeniably forceful, featuring tracks like Freak on a Leash and Got the Life that showcase the band's raw energy and experimental sound. However, the lyrics can be controversial at times, exploring dark themes that may not resonate universally. Davis's vocal delivery, while emotive, occasionally veers into a whiny tone throughout the album.

The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter by The Incredible String Band felt like a journey into a fantastical realm, similar to Lord of the Rings, but with a twist that didn't quite resonate with me. The album's use of a droning sitar became a bit nauseating towards the end, and I found myself questioning why it was considered a must-listen on the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list. Missy Elliott's Under Construction turned out to be better than I expected. While it’s clear she’s an interesting artist with a lot of creativity, the album leans heavily into R&B, which isn't really my cup of tea. Tracks like Work It showcase her innovative production and playful lyricism, making them stand out. However, the overall R&B-driven vibe makes the album feel more conventional compared to her earlier, more eclectic work. At Newport 1960
Muddy Waters
Recorded at the Newport Jazz Festival, At Newport 1960 captures the blues legend in a live setting where his talent is undeniable. Muddy's gritty vocals and guitar work are impressive, but the performance can feel a bit repetitive. The songs tend to blend into one another, making it difficult to distinguish when one track ends and another begins. While the band's musicianship is strong, the set lacks dynamic shifts that might keep listeners on their toes. Despite these issues, the album remains an important document of Muddy Waters' live performances.

Supergrass's second album, In It for the Money, marks a significant step forward in the band's musical maturity since their debut. Released in 1997, the album showcases a depth and complexity that sets it apart from much of the indie rock of its time. The band moves beyond the youthful exuberance of their first album, displaying a wider range of musical styles and more sophisticated songwriting. Tracks like Richard III and Late in the Day demonstrate their skill and ambition, blending catchy hooks with intricate arrangements. The album's production is polished yet retains the raw energy that Supergrass is known for, giving each song a distinctive edge. Arise
Sepultura
Arise is a brutal and relentless assault on the senses, showcasing the band's undeniable talent and stamina. Released in 1991, the album is a landmark in the death and thrash metal genres, known for its intense and aggressive sound. From the opening track, Arise, the band unleashes a barrage of pounding drums, blistering guitar riffs, and guttural vocals. While there's no denying the technical skill and precision of the musicians, the album can feel overwhelming, akin to having someone drill into your skull for the duration. Songs like Dead Embryonic Cells and Desperate Cry are relentless in their ferocity, leaving little room for subtlety or variation. The production is raw and powerful, capturing the band's live energy but offering little reprieve for the listener. Although the album's intensity is impressive, it lacks moments of contrast that might give the listener a break from the onslaught. The album is a testament to Sepultura's mastery of the metal genre, but its unrelenting nature may not be for everyone.

Nebraska
Bruce Springsteen
Nebraska is an underrated masterpiece that showcases his storytelling prowess through a collection of ten hauntingly perfect short stories. Released in 1982, the album presents a stark, stripped-down sound that deviates from Springsteen's usual rock style with the E Street Band. Recorded on a 4-track recorder at his home, these tracks were initially intended as demos but ultimately released in their raw form. The decision to release the songs as they were adds a layer of authenticity and intimacy to the album. The characters in these songs are desperate and ground down by life, ranging from criminals to bitter individuals grappling with their circumstances. The minimalist production enhances the bleak themes, allowing Springsteen's evocative lyrics and emotive voice to take centre stage. The album's lo-fi quality gives it a haunting and timeless feel that rewards listeners with each repeat listen. Despite its initial reception, the album has grown in stature over the years, standing as a testament to Springsteen's skill as a songwriter and storyteller.

Moss Side Story is an album that demonstrates clear skill and artistry, crafting a soundscape rich in atmosphere and mood. The music evokes a sense of intrigue and suspense that reminds me of the eerie, surreal vibes of Twin Peaks. The album's detailed production and layered instrumentation create a vivid, cinematic experience that feels almost like a soundtrack to an unfolding mystery.
However, while the album excels in creating a compelling atmosphere, it is somewhat less engaging when listened to in isolation. The lack of visual elements means the music’s narrative depth can be harder to fully appreciate without accompanying imagery. Blood Sugar Sex Magik, once a gateway to alternative music for many, feels somewhat overrated in hindsight. Musically, the album is solid, featuring Flea's innovative bass lines and John Frusciante's eclectic guitar work, which blend funk, rock, and punk elements seamlessly. The ballads on the album, like Under the Bridge and Breaking the Girl are undeniably strong and showcase the band's softer side with emotional depth.
However, Anthony Kiedis' vocal style, particularly his scat styled singing, can feel limited and repetitive at times. While his energetic delivery works on tracks like Give It Away and Suck My Kiss, it lacks the versatility needed to sustain the album's length and variety.
Now, with a more critical ear, some of the album's charm has worn off, and its flaws are more apparent. Broken English
Marianne Faithfull
Listening to Marianne Faithfull's Broken English was a mixed experience for me. I found her voice raw and gritty, but instead of being intriguing, it felt grating and unpolished. Her cover of John Lennon's Working Class Hero was particularly disappointing; it lacked the emotional depth and subtlety of the original, feeling more like a harsh imitation. Similarly, her rendition of Dr. Hook's The Ballad of Lucy Jordan didn't capture the charm and poignancy that made the original so memorable. The production aimed to be edgy and contemporary, but often felt dated and overdone. Despite these issues, I did notice some moments of lyrical brilliance and bold themes in the album. Songs like the title track Broken English showed her willingness to tackle difficult subjects, even if the execution was uneven. Collaborations with musicians like Steve Winwood and Barry Reynolds brought a level of musical sophistication, but it wasn't enough to save the overall experience for me. Their harmonies are tighter, and the songwriting, particularly from Lennon and McCartney, displays a growing maturity. Songs like All My Loving and It Won't Be Long highlight their ability to craft catchy, yet complex, pop tunes.
Overall, With the Beatles represents the band coming into their own, balancing the youthful exuberance of their early work with a more sophisticated and polished sound. However, some might miss the rawness that characterised their earlier performances.

Ocean Rain
Echo And The Bunnymen
Ocean Rain by Echo and the Bunnymen is a beautifully atmospheric album that highlights the band’s evolution, with Ian McCulloch’s haunting vocals taking center stage. The lush orchestration and cinematic quality of tracks like The Killing Moon and Ocean Rain add a new level of depth to their sound. McCulloch's voice, rich with emotion, perfectly complements the album's dark, romantic themes. While it leans more towards a polished and refined production, it still retains the band's distinctive edge. For fans who love the energy of Crocodiles and the sing-along appeal of earlier tracks, Ocean Rain offers a more expansive and introspective experience. The intricate arrangements and seamless flow of the album showcase the Bunnymen’s growing musical sophistication. Though different in tone, it stands as a powerful and memorable chapter in their discography, offering a haunting and immersive listening experience.

Ragged Glory
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Ragged Glory by Neil Young is a raw and powerful return to his electric roots, capturing the energy and spirit of his earlier work with Crazy Horse. The album's unpolished sound is intentional, with gritty guitar riffs and extended jams that embody the essence of garage rock. Tracks like F*!#in' Up and Over and Over are standouts, filled with relentless energy and a sense of reckless abandon. Young’s vocals are as passionate as ever, delivering lyrics that resonate with a mix of defiance and nostalgia. The album's rough edges and live-in-the-studio feel give it an authenticity that is both refreshing and timeless. Ragged Glory is a celebration of rock's raw power, with Young and Crazy Horse at their loudest and most unapologetic. While it may lack the polish of some of his other albums, its spirit and intensity make it a standout in his extensive catalogue. It's a testament to Neil Young's enduring ability to channel pure rock and roll energy.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Lauryn Hill
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a landmark album that showcases Lauryn Hill's exceptional vocal talent and musical versatility. Blending elements of hip-hop, R&B, soul, and reggae, the album is a rich tapestry of sounds, with Hill’s powerful and emotive voice at its core. Tracks like Ex-Factor and Doo Wop (That Thing) highlight her ability to seamlessly merge personal storytelling with sharp social commentary, making the album both deeply personal and universally relatable. The production is lush and varied, with each song offering something unique, whether it’s the soulful melodies or the intricate beats. However, at over an hour in length, the album can feel a bit stretched, with some tracks not quite matching the impact of the standout singles. Despite this, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is rightly considered a classic, with its influence still felt across genres today. Out Of The Blue
Electric Light Orchestra
Out of the Blue is undeniably ambitious, filled with lush arrangements, soaring strings, and intricate production, which are trademarks of Lynne's style. However, many of the songs start off strong but then veer off into extended instrumental tangents that can feel self-indulgent and drag on. Tracks like Mr. Blue Sky and Turn to Stone have their moments, but they sometimes get lost in overly elaborate sections that disrupt the flow. While the album is packed with creative ideas and musical complexity, it can come across as overwhelming and meandering, especially for those who prefer Lynne’s more focused and concise work with other projects. Despite its acclaim, Out of the Blue might leave you wishing for more of the straightforward, tightly produced sound that Lynne has perfected elsewhere.

Michael Kiwanuka
Michael Kiwanuka's self-titled album, Kiwanuka, showcases his undeniable talent as a vocalist. His voice is rich, soulful, and carries an authenticity that draws you in from the first note. There’s a timeless quality to his voice that resonates deeply, reminiscent of classic soul artists. However, while his vocal delivery is undoubtedly strong, the album as a whole falls a bit short in leaving a lasting impact.
The production is polished and the instrumentation is lush, blending elements of soul, folk, and jazz. Yet, despite these strengths, the album feels somewhat repetitive and lacks the dynamic energy that would elevate it from good to great. Many of the tracks blend together, making it difficult for any particular song to stand out.

The choice of songs is spot on, blending classic country, folk, and bluegrass tunes with impressive musicianship. The collaborations with legendary artists add authenticity and depth to the project.
However, the album's biggest flaw is its length. At over two hours, it stretches on far too long, leaving you feeling fatigued long before the final track. Tracy Chapman's self-titled debut album is a poignant and powerful collection that blends folk, rock, and soul with raw, emotive storytelling. The album's most iconic track, Fast Car, captures the desperation and hope of escaping a cyclical life, showcasing Chapman's ability to craft vivid narratives. Talkin' bout a Revolution serves as a call to arms, highlighting the album's underlying themes of social justice and change. Throughout, Chapman's voice is both tender and fierce, a perfect match for the introspective lyrics that explore love, struggle, and resilience. The minimalist production allows her voice and guitar to take center stage, creating an intimate, almost haunting atmosphere. Tracks like Behind the Wall strip back the instrumentation entirely, relying solely on Chapman's a cappella delivery to convey the stark reality of domestic violence. Isaac Hayes
Isaac Hayes’ Shaft is a funky and slick album that perfectly captures the essence of 1970s soul and funk. The iconic title track, with its unforgettable guitar riff and commanding vocals, sets the tone for a record that is both cool and charismatic. While the album is often classified as a soundtrack, it feels more like a score in places, with several instrumental tracks that enhance the mood rather than stand out as individual songs. This gives the album a cinematic quality that adds depth but occasionally makes it feel more like background music than a collection of hits.
Hayes’ rich baritone and creative arrangements shine throughout, bringing a unique flavour to the record.
