Dolly Parton
2/5
Trio by Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris features stunning vocal harmonies and exceptional skill. The album is a testament to the trio’s remarkable ability to blend their voices into rich, lush arrangements. Songs like To Know Him Is to Love Him and Wildflowers showcase their impeccable technique and the warm, inviting quality of their harmonies. Although the artistry and craftsmanship are evident, the style of music isn't to my personal taste. The mellow, country-folk sound, while beautifully executed, doesn’t resonate with me as much as other genres might. Despite this, I can certainly appreciate the skill and dedication that went into creating Trio. For fans of this genre, the album is likely to be a deeply rewarding listen. Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake not only showcases the Small Faces' underappreciated brilliance but also serves as an inspirational precursor to bands like Blur and The Jam. Often dismissed as a novelty album, it defies expectations with stellar R&B tracks like Rolling Over. Stanley Unwin's narration adds a whimsical charm, setting the stage for the creative storytelling seen in later acts. This album, and the Small Faces as a whole, deserve recognition for their innovative sound, paving the way for the musical influences felt by subsequent bands in the British music scene. Arrested Development's debut album, 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of..., delivers powerful messages wrapped in cheerful melodies. Released in 1992, this album stands out for its positive and uplifting themes, contrasting with the often violent and misogynistic content prevalent in hip-hop at the time. Songs like Tennessee and People Everyday emphasise social consciousness and self-reflection, offering listeners an insightful look into the artist's lives. The group incorporates elements of soul, funk, and gospel, creating a bright and summery sound that feels both refreshing and inspiring. Arrested Development's approach to hip-hop is less about aggression and more about empowerment and positivity. The album's innovative style and substance set it apart, earning critical acclaim and commercial success. Its blend of optimism and authenticity makes it a timeless classic that continues to influence artists today. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 11 STAND OUT TRACK - Mama's Always on Stage

Wild Gift by X is a visceral and intense punk rock album that captures the raw energy of the band's live performances. From the opening track to the last, the album delivers a relentless barrage of powerful riffs and impassioned vocals. The songwriting on Wild Gift is sharp and incisive, tackling themes of love, politics, and rebellion with a fierce authenticity. Tracks like We're Desperate and White Girl showcase the band's ability to blend punk aggression with melodic hooks, creating memorable anthems that stick with you long after the album ends. The production on Wild Gift is gritty and unpolished, perfectly complementing the band's DIY ethos and punk aesthetic. Each track on the album feels urgent and vital, making Wild Gift a timeless classic in the punk genre. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 9 STAND OUT TRACK - Year 1

The Cure
5/5
Disintegration by The Cure is a seminal album that epitomizes gloomy, introspective rock music. Released in 1989, it serves as a defining statement for the band. Amidst its melancholic landscape, the album showcases moments of sheer beauty. Robert Smith, the frontman, faced personal struggles during its creation, including a resurgence in his use of hallucinogenic drugs. This tumultuous period heavily influenced the album's production, resulting in a collection of songs that delve deep into themes of despair and existential angst. Smith's apprehension about turning thirty added an extra layer of poignancy to the album's composition process. Feeling the weight of time, he began writing music in isolation from the rest of the band, giving rise to the somber, introspective tone that pervades Disintegration. Despite not breaking new ground for The Cure, the album effectively refines their signature sound, showcasing their ability to craft haunting melodies and introspective lyrics. Tracks like Pictures of You and Lovesong exemplify the band's knack for blending darkness with beauty. In essence, Disintegration stands as a timeless classic, offering solace in its bleak yet cathartic exploration of the human condition. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 8 STAND OUT TRACK - Closedown
