Upbeat music and creative lyrics that made me smile or laugh at a few moments. Lots of funk influence and driving baselines. A good variety of styles too, with some ballad-like songs thrown in.
I didn't realize the similarities between Bob Dylan and John Prine. Dylan's similes were more abstract or thematic on politics, where Prine was more about life and making the most of it. This album made me think about the song lyrics and the simple guitar and harmonica provided space for that thinking to occur.
Lots of blues influence which was unexpected just knowing the hit single 'Imagine'. Second half seemed more like a vendetta tour when he was with The Beatles.
I didn't realize the number of CCR hits that came from this one album. Sounds like an entire era of American culture wrapped into an hour of music, especially with the blues influences.
Pretty relaxing album from cover to cover. Simple rhythms and meaningful lyrics.
Pretty solid debut album that established their sound and gave ideas of the history that were to come. I didn't hear any catchy songs that I'd add to my favorites but it was a good experience.
Loved the combination of brass and lyrics going back and forth in verses. I well produced album with great mixing. Records had really diverse grooves going between upbeat to laid back.
Unique voice and lyric cadence that sounded more soothing the more I listened. Great voice control, but no song that was instantly catchy.
I liked how each track had studio conversations before or after to bring the humanity to the music. The folk songs and intense strumming was fun to listen to.
This album has so.many iconic songs that not only defined an artist, but an era and genre. The album has distinct phases from beginning to end all around the same theme of relationship. The vocals are amazing
R.I.P. Guru. Debut album of two hip hop icons. Masterful production by Premo. Lyrical flow matches the beats perfectly. Creative voice cuts in scratches.
I have never heard of this band before, but love the band name. Creative guitar effects and a really diverse rhythmic repertoire. That was a fun album with a lot of variety and groove!
OutKast took a big leap releasing this style of album after Stankonia. But it delivered and spent a long time at the top of the charts (best selling hip-hop album of all time). When it came out I liked Speakerboxxx more that The Love Below because I wanted more rap which is what Big Boi delivered. Now, I would say one of my favorite albums is The Love Below - but you can't mention one without the other. I like TLB more now because of how unexpected it is: lyrics about Dracula, prototypes, jazz piano/drum. I loved hearing the organs, horns, and other instruments throughout a hip-hop album.
The second half of the album was more upbeat and more enjoyable than the first half. Some of their crescendos reminded me of Explosions in the Sky. Maybe a second listen would give me a better understanding of the album. I thought it was a little too long for the style of music.
I originally thought this was more of a beat record that was most well known for Rappers Delight, but there's some other rock tracks that have some notoriety. I liked the combination of drum sets and bingo battles.
I must not be a big fan of Radiohead's style of music because this album didn't speak to me as I expected. It did do a fantastic job establishing their sound for an early alt rock band.
Effortless lyrical flows over solid beats and samples. Keeps a good energy throughout the record.
I noticed a lot of influential rhythms and melodies across the record. I liked the unique groove of each record and catchy lyrics. I just downloaded this album a few weeks ago to start exploring Sly and and the Family Stone and this is a great introduction to their creative style of music and fusion.
Steady jazz influence and I enjoyed the horns. Listened to this in the car with Sarah and Katie as we passed the Hanford site on our way to Leavenworth.
Too slow and lyrics were hard to understand. Sarah, Katie W., and I listened to this album driving from Leavenworth to Ellensburg.
Several various styles and sounds in one album and with somethings reminded me of Prince, Nine Inch Nails, or Rammstein. There were some repetitive anthems I could imagine crowds would sing and I might look into some of the lyrics if they have any reference to Slovenian history and struggles.
A piano album of a live concert from Köln, Germany. Some moments felt like hip hop based on their cadence and repetition. Throughout the record, you could hear Jarrett moaning and emoting as he was playing. A very interesting easter agg during the performance.
I've heard of this album before being good but this is my first time listening to it. I liked the harmonizing between the vocalists and the steady feel thought the records. This album feels spacious, between the soft yrics and steady drum and bass/808s
This is another iconic hip hop album that includes harmonies, skits, and two musical superstars, Wyclef Jean and Ms. Lauren Hill. The album did an incredible job bringing the feeling of Brooklyn through the music. Several places in the album had some dialogue plots and skits to keep the record from sounding monotonous.
This album has a good variety of styles from authentic The White Stripes, to some that were more blues based. I might listen to this again to get a better understanding for it.
I first listened to this album on a road trip with Sarah and Katie Watson as we were coming back from Leavenworth in December 2025. It was much more upbeat and understandable that the previous album we just listened to by Bruce Springsteen. This album is upbeat and has a variety of collaborations with harmonies from Ladysmith Black Mambazo providing a good variety which kept me interested. Anytime accordion is included in a major album is a win for all the polka enthusiasts. Some songs actually sounded like a polka tune.
This album was very playful and another iconic hip hop album that established a unique style of The Pharcyde. I liked that each emcee in the group had their own style and sound and you can tell that they're having fun rapping and making music.
Good foundational rock album. Some blues songs and the mega hit of Bang a Gong.
80s pop duo with two huge hits on this album, 'Shout' and 'Everybody wants to rule the world's. The second half of this album was more instrumental.
Quite a passionate albums about the unification of Africa and the struggles in Nigeria. I listened to this album before going to the 2025 holiday party with Uvnie, and Sarah's former colleagues. It brings many different instruments and rhythmic styles to the different records.
Nice instrumental album with some nice grooves. I listened to this album the day Sarah left for Seattle to meet Breanna. And when the dog at the corner got injured on the fence.
Short album of all guitar and vocals. It has a relaxing tempo and feel to it. I listened to this album while Sarah was in Seattle with Breanna and I had an eye appointment. I heard this 1,001 list features several Nick Drake records and this was the first one I've ever heard.
An instrumental album with responsive loops. I have never heard of this group before today, 30 Dec 2025
Mixture of punk, ballads, and other rock. I'll come back and listen to this full deluxe version.
Funk/soul album my one of the founding bands with a really unique sound. I first downloaded this album after watching the Summer of Soul documentary which had video of Sly & The Family Stone on stage in Harlem. The whole band brought such a presence and some of the artists looked like superheroes.
Compared to the previous Joni Mitchell album, Hejira (1976), these songs had more structure and the lyrics were more in cadence. It had more approachable music in my opinion.
I enjoyed this album even though I don't typically listen to Coldplay. "Yellow" actually fits well in the series and lead up to it as opposed to playing it any other time.
Enjoyed this album very much. Unique guest rugs that have been samples in hip hop, but I couldn't quite place them.
I was impressed by the number of different sounds, styles, and instruments on this album. The musicians have an impressive repertoire along with some laid back vocals.
The track lineup has four classic songs that defined MGMTs sound. I liked the various time signatures in the records.
Nice mix between African rythyms with guitars. Al Hassidi Terei was a catchy tune.
Chaos from the start. There are so many different sounds and vocals on this record it was fun to try to keep track.
I head some David Bowie type sounds in some of the tracks and enjoyed the iconic hits that everyone knows by heart.
This album had some mega hits from Stevie and the tone of the album made me want to dance.
For a genre I don't appreciate, this album kept my interest and I want to explore more of their music.
Nice. I didn't get through all 69 songs, but sure feel loved afterwards.
Some iconic sounds but several tracks sounded too similar
Early hip hop album that established the sound and culture of New York hip hop. Creative drum patterns and groove for the electronic music
Listened in the car on the way to the airport and of where I could hear there was early getting influence. I'll listen again to hear more of the lyrics
I liked hearing some alternative versions of popular songs of the era and looked into the history of who did them first.
A masterful work by one of the best. Stevie Wonder brings such positive emotions through his music.
I enjoyed hearing the variety of instruments and rythyms.
So many soothing sounds and uplifting melodies
A album with more funk than I expected. Had many soothing sounds and great grooves.
There's not a single misplaced track on this album and you can feel the thought and detail that went into it.
I'll listen to this again to appreciate the drumming more.
Listened to this while cleaning the house before kitchen remodel. The title track was a much different sounding song than the rest of the album.
