Reviews (page 12 of 12)

Solid 3*. All jazzy instrumental, but in a good way. Very long

I just can't get past the discordant jumble of sound.

Listening to this gave me anxiety

Not my first pass; I'll be curious to see if there is more Miles down the road. Not my starting point if someone requested recs for MD. That being said; classic and must listen (duh).

Not in general my genre... I enjoyed the album, especially the parts that highlighted his trumpet. But it’s so much you kind of get lost in it. I’m between 3 and 4 but I’ll go 4 just cause it’s Miles Davis

I took a semester of jazz quiz and sang “I Fuckin Love Watchin You Piss” in Louis Armstrong’s voice in Ross’ room every day. I will not subjugate myself to listening to any more free form no-vocal jazz music. This is one star and anyone who says otherwise can answer to Larry Dwyer himself.

Way ahead of its time. Cool chilled and also strangely challenging

Not for me

A dream, a place with a clearing that drips with choices. In even waters, the fish will swim. As the album starts, the drummer seems to be the only thing holding everything together. It sounds like Miles is just paying attention to the drummer. Then I start to hear the musicians pairing off, twisting into and out of each others rhythm. I think timing and tempo are important to this album. Everyone feels so free to throw in fills or take a silent beat. Love this album!

Phenomenal.

Good in parts but farcically long

Jazz ain't for me

5.0 + Thanks, Thom Yorke, for turning me on to this record in 2001. It took about a dozen listens before I understood it — at first it mostly sounded like throwing jazz instruments down flights of stairs. Now I appreciate it as a soundtrack for a fever dream. Miles Davis’s sparse and echoey trumpet takes on an eerie, menacing and strangely majestic quality, especially when contrasted with clouds of creeping electric piano lines and muted, splashy drums.

They sure have a lot of superstars on this album. I like the way the ample rhythm section carves out spaces for the horns to solo, so they’re not soloing over top of each other, which is the problem I had with the recent Mingus album. I love the percussive nature of the rhythm guitar and keyboards. Miles plays aggressively at times, more so than I’ve heard before. While it’s great that it’s so improvised, with little rehearsal and only impromptu guidance from Miles, the fact that it was over-edited seems to defeat the purpose. I didn’t like this when I sampled it back in the day but after three listens in 24 hours I’m a fan.

Back end was pretty smooth and lovely, but experimental jazz, no vocals, and 20 minute long songs is rough.

First couple tracks were great, then it gets to B-Side, drug infused, experimental jazz. Got to be in that mood for that, but I still liked it.

Jazz is tough. Good background music.

Funky, jazzy, but a bit too experimental

If Miles and his band were on stage and someone said "Hey play Pharaoh's Dance" would they even come close to recreating the song on the album? Wasn't really in the mood for experimental jazz - I got sick of this one pretty quickly

Oh boy, if there ever was a polarizing album... Fans of his earlier phases, Be-bop, Hard-bop and Modal will probably hate this. But what you have to respect about Miles is that he's always pushing the boundaries and charting new territory, too bad if its out of your comfort zone. Get uncomfortable mofos! I think this would have been a cracker single album but it drags a bit as a double, so I would give it a 3 +1 for its influence on jazz/rock fusion and just because Miles is the OG badass mofo. If you like this check out the album Miles from India, a compilation of Miles' music mostly performed by excellent Indian musicians.

It's jazz. If you like sitting around your house listening to smooth instrumental jazz then this is for you. I don't so it's not for me. If I were at a jazz club and they played it there then I'd be ok. I don't have any use for this album outside of that purpose.

Prog rock sucks. Prog Jazz sucks just as much. (Kind of Blue whips ass but this aint it)

Very cool album!

I had very high hopes for this, but it was mostly noise. I don't think this lives up to the historical hype.

I generally like Miles Davis but this was a little too avant- garde for my tastes. I could see liking it as background for a screenplay or something.

Thank god. Finally something truly excellent. This is not my favorite Miles album. That would be Sketches of Spain. But compared to the rest of the albums we’ve covered on this list, this is an easy five stars. Every track is a groovy odyssey.

It's jazz bro

i dont like jazz

Nice and relaxing/ Trumpets out of 5

Late period Miles Davis is hit or miss for a lot of folks. But boy do I love it. It's jazz full of the Psychedelic movement, trance like. Like New York City late in the evening. Alive. Kinetic.

This album is interesting in parts, boring in others, bluesy throughout. I enjoyed the front half immensely, but it did get long in the tooth.

Not the most accessible album...but I get why it was such a big deal when it came out. I listened to this in college on mushrooms and thought it was overwhelming. It ends up it wasn't just the mushrooms and it's still overwhelming. I admit I scrubbed through a little... but an interesting album I typically wouldn't listen to.

Turned off after about 5 mins. Just making noise with instruments.

It was horny

This is one of Davis' later albums, in what became known as his "electric era" where he started using a lot more electric pianos, etc. I didn't really care for it, I haven't spent the time to "get" Jazz. His earlier work is apparently better, I should listen to his best album, "Kind of Blue" at some point, but I can't get myself to listen today after listening to this one. Davis was sort of controversial, he was seen as a huge sellout later in his career and isn't the best instrumentalist, supposedly. He also beat his wives, so there's that.

Songs: Miles Runs the Voodoo Down

didnt finish

Kind of Blue is still my all time favorite but this fusion album is good. Have to be in a certain mindset for Jazz but I like this.

One of the most amazing jazz records of my experience.

at the start i thought this was pushing the boundaries of my ability to appreciate jazz, but the longer it goes the easier it is to settle in.

I first heard this a long time ago after getting it from the Rochester Public Library - I was trying to learn more about Miles Davis at the time, and I wasn't ready for how vast and varied his catalog is. Maybe a decade later, I appreciate this album more.

Weird and fantastic

A truly stunning start. And a must own LP.

Early acid jazz. Super relaxing. Seemed like every song was improv and almost 25 minutes long a piece, which was crazy.

Shit is wild and all over the place. I love it

Never listen to this before, it was a great experience. I did not notice how long the songs were, the music kind of just puts you on zone.

Sounds good but too long

I can appreciate that this is some mad stuff but I don’t think I had the attention for a lot of it.

Not quite my style, but i can appreciate it objectively.

It was nice background music

Yeaah I knew the album already, really good. Experimental af tho

Enjoyable. Good background music while working.

This is my favorite era for Miles though it may not be for many others. I love getting lost in these jams especially the way they are edited together to make these "movements" and suites. A bold experiment in searching for a new sound and creating a new subgenre in the process.

Definitely well-known and iconic in modern Jazz. An intimidating album, I can't say I have the background to fully appreciate it. It's likely a 5 but enjoyment (and understanding) for me is a 4. Some bold play here. Might be the only trumpet I've ever heard with echo/delay. It also sounds like a lot of this was spliced together from many cuts, but I would have never guessed that, seems like a complete one-take to me.

Miles Davis did it again. He revolutionized jazz once more. Amazing jazz album.

great bgm - C

interesting, not my jam though

Transcendent music from an alien mind.

Nope, I hate this.

When it's going, I'm into it, but there are too many lapses of rhythm for me. Maybe if I wasn't trying to listen while working.

Pretty sweet tracks actually. Very long and often very meandering and esoteric, but all good ambiance.

Really cool but I'm too dumb to appreciate jazz in a way that isn't just "background music"

To nuch Jazz and 20 minute long songs

It's true what they say about experimental jazz. It's shit

Prefer kind of blue. Flashes of brilliance but mostly boring

loving this. Bonkers and I can see why it is in the Top 1001 album's

Jazzy, need to be in the right mindset to enjoy it

Svårlyssnat

not in the mood rn, but an experimental jazz classic

Only listened to half. It was a crazy experience hearing miles Davis doing something so abstract and psychedelic.

I wish I liked jazz more than I do

Damn, this album is something else. It just goes freakin nuts in 'Miles Runs the Voodoo Down' - its like some weird, psychedelic musical odyssey. But what an album, I can't not give this 5 stars.

Ca passe en fond

Nothing special to me sadly. Probably revolutionary but also listened on a bike ride so I am underappreciating.

Clearly a masterpiece. Abstract and at times uncomfortable but very virtuous

Shit man, this was an experience. From the getgo it takes you someplace else entirely.

-I cant deal with that much smooth jazz sorry

there's so much jazz and it's so long and I vibe with none of it sorry :(

the songs are really fricking long 😂 they are all saxophone and stuff

blippetiblopetti

I feel bad for you if you don't get this album.

Whew. I thought I had listened to this record before but maybe not. It was WAY more experimental and chaotic than I expected. The musicianship is undeniable but it's not exactly an enjoyable listening experience. For some reason, though, it absolutely pushed me to heights of productivity while I listened to it this morning so there's something there that's working on my subconcious. Overall, I absolutely understand why this is on the list and I think I'm going to have to give it a second listen to understand it.

Beautiful listen

I know this is a classic and everything, but it is so arduous to go through. the fact that it is 1 hour 45 minutes already detracts from it being a perfect album.

I was led to believe Kind of Blue was his opus but this meandering puzzle of noise is absolutely fantastic, something that you can immediately have enthusiasm for, but also something that would take a long time to truly understand on a theoretical level.

Closer to a 4.5, but I'm giving it 5 stars

I've no doubt it was/is innovative and influential, but I find this very hard work to listen to. It just rambles on and on and on and on. And then they start a new track and it rambles on some more. I much preferred 'In A Silent Way'.

Jazz fusion! Rockigt med el-gitarrer och väldigt experimentellt.
