"You hate jazz? You fear jazz! You fear the lack of rules. The lack of boundaries." I mean, this is mostly nonsense isn't it? In my humble opinion, a lack of any kind of cohesive structure makes for a dull and un-engaging listen, especially if you spread it into a long-form piece. I didn't hate it like I have some other albums, but I have to judge it based on how well it moved and involved me, and that answer is not at all. It sat in the background well enough, and I adopted a face of mild bemusement for the most part while listening to it. Jazz isn't big, and it isn't clever.

I don't understand this music. It just sounds like noise to me. Really lacking in composition, cohesion, beat, everything. Didn't enjoy listening to this one at all.

Very,very,very bad.I don’t understand the love for this album.It’s almost 2 hours of wailing songs that never seem to go anywhere and never seem to end.I just can’t believe anyone actually listens to it.

I tried. But it seems that I’ll never be able to enjoy Jazz improv. I’m clearly not intelligent or cultured enough.

I started this to expand my musical horizons a bit. Jazz like this is something I never really got and I still don't. I'm sure the individual musicians are very clever but this just sounds like they are all trying to play a different piece of music at the same time.

What the hell? This is insane. The whole album just feels like a systems check. Maybe a warmup. Nobody seems to be playing off each other, except maybe the drummer.

A little bit too free-form for me. Difficult to listen to as I'm conditioned to expect a track to go somewhere. Birth of the Cool was better, and I'm going to drop this a star for the track lengths.

I didn't find a single thing I liked about this. To me it was an album of ridiculuoisluy long tracks, music that sounded like random noise and an unsuitably long runtime. It is far too expermental and chaotic for my taste. I definitely don't enjoy pure Jazz, just songs that take Jazz influence.

I've listened to some miles Davis in the past, and I'm sure I enjoyed it much more than this. I found this really difficult to get through. I need structure in music. I have no idea where any of this is going and I can't enjoy it because of this. Is stressful 26 minutes is too long for a track! There's no way I would ever choose to listen to any of this again and I didn't enjoy it. Has to be a 1. Probably demonstrates my ignorance

This is the type of Jazz that I just don't get - to me it's chaotic and lacks form, which are probably the same reasons why some people rave about it. Not for me.

Jazz listens would absolutely love this album. Unfortunately, I do not love jazz and can't recommend this album. There are only two issues with this album firstly, no vocals, and secondly retaining attention. To begin, I do not know if all jazz has no vocals, but I do know that this album has none which is a personal gripe because I very much enjoy vocals in music. Vocals add depth and meaning to songs instrumental can only do so much to portray meaning and feeling and in this album, there is a lack of both. Secondly, as it can be very easily seen this album is quite long with only seven songs. That is due to the fact that each song besides one is over ten minutes two of which are over twenty minutes long. The length of the songs would not be a problem if the songs were able to hold the listener's attention which they do not. It was a struggle to retain attention during the songs "Pharaohs Dance," and "Bitche's Brew." Those being the first two songs on the track set the pace for the rest of the album and made for a rather unenjoyable listening experience.

Did not care for this album. At all. When do I get to hear "Kind of Blue"? Is that album on this list? The freeform jazz created for this record gave me a headache that would not go away. Give me a little structure with my jazz, please. I think the heroine had truly taken hold by the time he made this record. If I had a cat and it ran across a piano, I think I would get the same styling of music heard in Bitches Brew.

I gotta respect it, but man, this was unlistenable to me. Probably cool if you like jazz more than me, but as it is, I disliked it. I don't think it's the worst album I've heard, but it's gotta get a one. The length was awful... My favourite song was maybe Miles Runs The Voodoo Down? No idea. All of it was just noise to me, so...

Unfortunately, without watching a jazz group live, I don’t feel like I can make a connection with these recordings. Professionally done, but not my cup of tea.

Honestly, it's not even the length, this just wasn't interesting jazz. There was way too much going on.

Logboek entry 1: Ik heb het gevoel dat ik er al een hele dag op heb zitten en ik zit pas op driekwart van de eerste track. Dit wordt een lange zit. Tot nu toe kan ik het wel aanhoren, maar ik haal er geen plezier of genot uit. Met vlagen waan ik me die dansende dwerg van Twin Peaks. Logboek entry 2: Gevoelsmatig kijk ik nu 2 dagen later naar de voortgangsbalk in Spotify. Ik kom er achter dat ik pas halverwege track 2 ben. M'n vorige logboek entry was slechts 20 minuten geleden. Opeens snap ik hoe het tijdreizen in Interstellar werkt. Logboek entry 3: Halverwege track 3. Het klinkt inmiddels iets minder alsof de muzikanten los van elkaar aan het warmspelen zijn. Het voelt alleen wel alsof Miles je na het lopen van een marathon uitnodigt om nog even een uurtje te gaan wandelen. Grotendeels berg op, met wind tegen, op verkeerde schoenen. En Miles stapt over het algemeen graag stevig door. Logboek entry 4: Ik zie dat ik net een nummer van 4,5 minuut heb gehad. Bijna gemist. Twee keer knipperen en het is voorbij. Dat vrijwel alle andere artiesten aan 4 minuten genoeg hebben om hun punt te maken; ongelofelijk eigenlijk. Ik voel me alsof de eindstreep in zicht komt, maar de gladiolen worden nog niet in m'n handen gedrukt. Nog iets meer dan een half uur te gaan. Dat is genoeg tijd om te luisteren naar Raw Power van the Stooges, Green River van CCR of Surfer Rosa van Pixies. Allemaal albums waarvoor ik 5 sterren uitdeelde. Het mag voor mij niet zo zijn, Miles heeft nog puf. Logboek entry 5: Sanctuary begon wel aardig, met een beetje een Tournée Générale vibe, maar op het einde ontspoort de trein toch weer. Het laatste beetje zin wat ik had in dit album wordt nu vakkundig weggeblazen. Zometeen als beloning voor mezelf maar even een rustig podcastje opzetten over een misdaad in Drenthe waar ik nog nooit van gehoord heb, o.i.d. Muziek hoeft vandaag niet meer. Logboek entry 6: Over de helft van de laatste track nu. Nog een paar stappen en de reis is voorbij. Miles is er zelf toch ook wel wat moe van merk ik bij de laatste track, en gelukkig maar. Dit album was eens en nooit meer voor mij. Ik ben nu al bang voor de drie andere keren dat ik nog een Miles Davis album ga krijgen. Grote kans dat ik dan eerder afhaak als hij weer met me wil gaan lopen. Met alle respect een 1 van mij voor deze slijtageslag.

p196. 1970. 1 star. It's probably technically exquisite but... ffs, do we really need a double album of 70's jazz wankage and 20+ minute shapeless, pointless, free form tracks? There is no difference between this and all those double album prog rock albums from the same era that no-one listens to. Life is too short for this.

I tried. I listened to this album again. I’ve heard it before. It’s been on my mind a ton. I keep trying to figure it out, and I can’t. I don’t get it. The album art work and the beer are amazing. The album is chaos.

I kept wondering what method they used to come up with names for each of these tracks. There is music of his that does it for me. This album missed the mark by a wide swath of bitches.

The 60s did weird things to people. And to music. Take Miles Davis for instance. He birthed the cool at the end of the 50s. But by the end of the 60s he was as deep in the psychedelic, abstract, and avante garde as everyone else. I would say it’s like the cool kid you knew in high school that everyone wanted to be like, but then they got addicted to drugs and became a completely different person. I would, but apparently Davis birthed the cool from heroin binges, so the drugs were there all along.

I didn’t finish the album. I feel bad rating it on a (very) incomplete listen, but I feel like the fact that couldn't finish speaks for itself.

Bitches Brew is an experimental, groundbreaking and very brave album, created by a genius-at-work Miles Davis and his ensemble of top-notch jazz musician of his time. The work is a fusion od modal, experimental and definitely avant-garde jazz, with some early rock and funk influence. Miles' experience is certainly expressed loud and clear on this album - he is not afraid, he knows what he wants from himself and other members, and is working hard to deliver an almost 120 minutes long masterpiece of jazz. On paper it's a recipe for a top album of all time. So what's my opinion? I... don't like it. I really tried, but I don't like it. It's very hard to find a key to understand this album. Obviously compositions here have their own rules and motives, but I can't identify them, or I can, but they are not appealing to me. I am a fan of avant-garde music, I love the chaotic neatness of Fantomas, erratic Igorrr, calmness of Sunn O))). But those band operate in context of completely different genre, that I know and understand so much better than jazz. Probably I am too oblivious to even the simplest examples of the genre, that's why it's harder to find the context. I doubt it, but maybe in the future I will spend much more time exploring nuances and rules of jazz, so that breaking the form and moulding it afresh will be fully appreciated by me. But at the moment, the album is totally incomprehensible for me and both times that I listened to it, I felt like I was being experimentally tortured by music. Maybe next time!

Ugh, I CANNOT endure this - I made it through the first track and realized that the second track was more of the same, so I stopped before it could give me a headache. It seems like a bad jam session with the musicians playing random notes. The trumpet frequently makes off-key squealing and squawking noises that grate on my ears.

Couldn’t even listen, gave it a chance but it was incredibly boring.

I hated this album when I first heard it 20ish years ago and I still hate it now. I know Miles Davis is a jazz legend. I do enjoy some of his other work, Kind of Blue for instance; but this is just unappealing noise to me. Hell, I even like some true blue noise artists but this just outright turns me off. I know a lot of people love this album and I'm glad that they can get into it but this just isn't the kind of jazz that I enjoy and the near 2 hours of this is like time in the dentist's chair to me. Sorry, Miles. You'll get a much kinder score when Kind of Blue inevitably appears as my album of the day.

This is one of the worst albums I have ever had the misfortune to hear. As Tony Wilson said, ‘Jazz is the last refuge of the untalented. Jazz musicians enjoy themselves more than anyone listening to them does.’ He had a point!

This is going to be a very divisive statement but screeching trumpets and other brass instruments are just awful sounding and give me a pounding headache. There is NO way I am going to make it thru the 1st 20+ minute song on this album let alone its entire playtime of 1 hour 45 minutes. It's a no from me.

I've never been a lover of freestyle jazz type stuff. I like rhythm and order. This is not for me.

I took a semester of jazz quiz and sang “I Fuckin Love Watchin You Piss” in Louis Armstrong’s voice in Ross’ room every day. I will not subjugate myself to listening to any more free form no-vocal jazz music. This is one star and anyone who says otherwise can answer to Larry Dwyer himself.

Jazz ain't for me

It's jazz. If you like sitting around your house listening to smooth instrumental jazz then this is for you. I don't so it's not for me. If I were at a jazz club and they played it there then I'd be ok. I don't have any use for this album outside of that purpose.

This is one of Davis' later albums, in what became known as his "electric era" where he started using a lot more electric pianos, etc. I didn't really care for it, I haven't spent the time to "get" Jazz. His earlier work is apparently better, I should listen to his best album, "Kind of Blue" at some point, but I can't get myself to listen today after listening to this one. Davis was sort of controversial, he was seen as a huge sellout later in his career and isn't the best instrumentalist, supposedly. He also beat his wives, so there's that.
