1001 Albums Summary

The quick beat songs all sounded like he was trying to get through them as fast as he could play and hoped everyone kept up. I liked the smoother beat and musicality of songs like Miss Ann and Oh, Why.

It was the 60's. Music was everything and Grace Slick was/ is a rock legend. Wish she did more of the vocals but as is, this album holds up to the test of time.

Atypical. This album has such a variety of influences. Musically and vocally superior punk.

Introduction to Moby. Play will be something I would listen to again and again.

There is much to appreciate.

So interesting with slow and easy style. Everything is underdone. That is what makes it so different and compelling.

Never was a big fan. Read his biography and liked him even less. Zero enthusiasm in this live performance. The harmonica was painful. Historic performance with audience hecklers. I thought I would like part two with the Band or the Hawks better. I was wrong.

so different, pieces of unique music bound together with other pieces of unique music. Vocals are smooth and inviting. So unpredictable and interesting.

So so awe struck by this album. The improvised notes on a broken piano was a pure virtuoso performance of a talented master. Wish I could have heard it live. WOW

Background work music. Kind of pleasant.

Amazing talent! Singer/songwriter puts out her second album at the age of 21 and every single one of the songs are solid. Ballad singer or pop Goddess, she can sing anything she wants.

R and B sounds. Forerunners of music for over 2 or 3 decades. Used synthesizers and experimental funky sounds, which never appealed to me. The straight Rhythm and blues was awesome and copied for generations with the falsetto voices. Liked the piano but not the use of organ sounds or that "shaft" sounding percussion instrument. Hendricks played with them for a time before he broke out as a artist on his own.

Guitar Master! That is what set Van Halen's performances apart. It always sounds amazing and demands you to pay attention. Lyrics and vocals never pulled me in the way the guitar solos did. For sure he was one of the best.

Trio. Enjoyed the drums on all tracks. Familiar sounds of the 70's but a bit darker in political notes of working class life and even getting mugged and beaten while riding the "Tube". Vocal reminded me of a Bowie sound. Maybe more members in the band could have enhanced the too simple repetitive bits. They might have been playing for their own gain and I didn't feel like I was encouraged by the sounds to go along with them. Guess it just wasn't anything new under the sun for me. A swing and a miss for me.

Express yourself

Just ok for me. Didn't seem like it was professionally put together. Wonder if they ever got better.

Jazz and poetry blend to speak the ageless message of human struggle. His voice was pitchy pretty often but his calm style and the musical performances, especially the flute kept me listening.

Opened the doors to making music differently with multiple overlayed sound tracks. Stretching boundaries and using sounds and instruments that had not been used before. A day in the Life is pretty special.

Wanted to like it but did not. It was not good. Cinema Show gave me laughable visions of an SNL skit. Gave it a 2 because I like later stuff and heard glimpses of it from Phil and Peter

Fun and I liked it more than I thought I would. I don't think of it as artistry but it does have energy.

Suffering from restless leg syndrome. Could anyone sit still through this duets album? Not me.

loved the guitar, percussions, flute and piano. The bandoneon was highlighted too much for me but I guess that is culturally preferred in Tango.

Was not a fan of their earlier harder stuff but by this album they had evolved a bit and I actually like some of it (Nothing Else Matters, The Unforgiven, Enter Sandman). Some really good music

Never listened to this album in entirety before today. Will listen again.

Loved it as a kid but this was not their best. That would have been " Pet Sounds", which was probably my pre-teen anthem album.

so many tracks!!! all knock off sounds of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, pretty juvenile lyrics and a bit of the Who. Overall sounds sloppy and not at all authentic.

Unexpected! Loved the instrumental string parts and piano, as well as the background vocals. Would listen again especially Strength of Strings. I hear Gene Clark's performance from Lady of the Lake in Father John Misty's style.

Recognizable and unique voice, but it is so so dinner theatre.

Started out intrigued and liked it. After half way point it was not as interesting to me. I would give it a 3.5 if that was an option.

I really really liked it.! But I kept feeling like there was something missing that would take this album to the next level. It was so so good but should have felt "something" that set it apart. Solid 4/5

It was unexpected and easy to enjoy. Didn't particularly like to barking dogs lol but the blend of instruments and styles really put a great spin on the album

His off key voice shouldn't work but it does. The harmonies are CSNY quality. Harmonica outstanding. Steel guitar masterful. Albuquerque, I never get tired of this music, listened to it over and over again back in the day. One of my favorite all time Neil Young songs. Album is raw. I wonder if he ever did a do over? Could have been more polished if he tried to please the consumer but that is his style.

Yup, I was a fan but listening now I wish the vocals were stronger. The music and mix of hippie, anti war, get high and free spirit kind of music with some country and soulful stuff is still holding up. Just not the vocal performances. My teenage self would have given them a 5.

Listen to the instrumental pieces. I had this LP and played it over and over again. Masters!!!! Piano, flute, sax, guitar, drums and vocals....everything blended to make some great enduring sounds.

Intros were unique and I was able to listen and even start to enjoy some of it. Then the vocals began.

A unique artist. Classic material.

This is one of those bands everybody knows but who can really listen to this except on Broadway?

Sounds like the Turner Classic soundtrack from a German band singer/ double spy type movie.

Ray Charles is a genius and a stylist. The big band arrangements and the back up singers could have been toned down. Imagine "Come rain or Come Shine" without the Lawrence Welk singers? I would be so much better.

Fun at the time and holds up today. Respect the drums.

So good. What a voice and loved the various instruments used for such an interesting mix of influences. Very much appreciated the artistry but doubt I would listen to this again.

I like "Beth" probably because it doesn't sound like Kiss. I never took them seriously. They always felt like a gimmick with the face paint and the loud and mediocre instrumentation, not to mention the sub par vocals. Just a silly show.

Not typically a fan of punk but this was interesting. Excellent musicians. Didn't appreciate the vocals much. Dylan singing punk?

A real mixed bag of country and rock with a indie twist. This would be better if it wasn't so long. Cut both "Otta Mind" versions, "Why would you wanna live", "Monday", "Don't Forget the Flowers" and shorten the almost 7min "Dreamer in my Dreams". That would cut 20 minutes and then I could give it a 4.

absolute genius. 1966 and what a blend of voices and harmonies, rock, folk and some Shankar inspired sounds... Thought provoking and hopeful lyrics. Love it

Masterful but I really dont like jazz.

What a varied assortment of music. Soft and smooth, with noticeable English Invasion influences, latin instrumentation, jazz, even some soulful stuff. Really easy to listen, even with the limitation of not understanding the Portuguese lyrics

It has everything! But I cant give it a 4. My criteria for that is that I would select it for my own consumption. But I can understand higher ratings.

It was musically ok but the vocals are so inconsistent from track to track.

So over the top that I have to dismiss it. Too much banshee screaming. Never been a fan and this listen confirms my aversion to Deep Purple and the like

It was an easy listen...kind of background music for a party with lots of conversation... varied enough to keep it interesting... Kind of spacey. Maybe good for a space launch party...which we have often on the Space Coast of Florida

I'm a fan of Cohen but this album was so disappointing. Hated the music and the backup singers. Lyrics are his edge but not strong enough to save this.

Excellent. Have been a fan and revisiting this album solidifies it. The drums alone make this GREAT! Until the end of the World has been one of my favorite U2 songs .

Love the unique and recognizable sound of The Band. Have long been listening and appreciating their music. Love how they share the role of lead vocals and their harmonies.

Loved the percussions on "One More Time". In it's entirety the album didn't gel. Nothing held it together. Sometimes cool and often so repetitious and boring. Vocals didn't help make it more interesting. Hard to concentrate on the music quality because it just fell into the background.

Some epic music. Overproduction and a over sung in places. Masterful guitar. It exploded things in the 80s. P

Such a talented singer/ songwriter. And only beginning her career with this first album. They say to write about what you know. Could she really know this much disappointment in life so young? That is sad but makes really good music.

I felt like this was a giant jam session for the sole enjoyment of the musicians. Masterful artists, but I felt like no one else was invited to the party. I didn't enjoy this at all.

So weird...experimental sounds and pub sing along quality vocals. Not ready to release but they did anyway. Not good. Apples and oranges!

Without a doubt, one of the albums that would be the soundtrack of my life story. So much time ingesting the words and the notes... it is now a part of me. It just doesn't get old for me.

Great drums on Soft and Bucket. Musically this is superior. I get the complaint about the vocals but overall it holds up.

Full on classic rock and roll. For me it is a mood thing...not always in the mood for Johnson's vocals but always love the music.

It was fine but didn't it sound like British Invasion 60's? Maybe a Dave Clark Five albums with a blanket over the speakers.

The band is good. Vocalist is not. Really enjoyed the last song and I realized why....no vocals.

Some highs and some lows on this 80"s album. Hard to not be seeing Wham or Boy George dancing to some of this but then the instrumentation pull in the right direction.

Really good sounds but lyrics are so weak. I like the drummer and Harry has an interesting voice, so I'll move it from a 2 to a 3

Liked the sound. Hated the lyrics and the videos. She made some "artistic" choices that eliminate the album for me.

Cream of the crop of amazing music from the 70s. Timeless and mesmerizing.

Easy listening background music. Nice vocals and piano, sax but maybe if it was arranged differently it could have been memorable story telling.

Each song was a surprise. Unexpected and sometimes spacey, but in a good way. Could see this as exercising background music.

Each song seemed to build on the last one. Some incredible stuff.

Dark and weird. Interesting and creative. Repetitive sounds that reminded me of the banging of an MRI during different sequences, with the patient singing along while on valium. EERIE.

So much on this album. His vocals are so styled and the musicianship throughout is genius. What a storyteller and innovator. Only one Stevie Wonder.

Lots of talent but why the random covers? Sounded like so many different bands and lots of classical influence. I liked most of it. Vocals and instrumental blends are excellent. Cheesy bits of dialog thrown in didn't help.

Listening with my 1984 ears this was an amazing anthem album. Not as much of a fan as I was then. Saw the Boss so many times and I don't feel the need to ever see him again.

Interesting and uplifting in some way. Have no idea what they are singing but I feel it is a spiritual and positive message. Loved this exposure to something so off the beaten path.

Really enjoyed this album more than I had anticipated.

Rock and roll but maybe ahead of their time for popular acceptability. Sounds something like Rocky Horror music and Mick Jagger rolled together.

DLR and Eddie Van Halen are icons. Fun album but the 80s synthesizer and hype for excessive grandiose blasting make it cheap.

What an amazing voice that makes you FEEL and the lyrics that express so much. One of the best bands ever in my opinion. Sometimes really dark but very real.

It's been way too long since I wrapped myself in this album of my youth. Growing up in the midst of the Vietnam War, civil rights unrest and changing music bringing light to the issues. Thoughtful and beautiful collaboration.

So much on this album. Love love love some of it. I never really cared for the frivolous silly songs but there is so much brilliant stuff with such diverse influences that this has to be rated well.

Something is off on this album. Desperation to put out an album when they didn't have what it takes and filled in with tracks that should have remained empty.

All over the place. High school choir singing to club music and the Janet Jackson sounding stuff. Trying to make too many points in too many ways.

She's simple the best but not for me. Fun and energetic music but not something I would play for myself.

I was tortured by this album being overplayed and turned up as loud as possible. It made me hate the Doors. It still isn't something I would ever select to hear.

So respect his eloquence and his beautiful way of looking death in the face and creating such reflections for us to share. This may have been his best.

This is pretty ok. Vocals and drums are good. Not impressed by the lyrics or the mood being clear expressed. What's the point?

I'm not a fan of the Jerry Lee Lewis style of jitter bug and screaming. I wont be listening again unless I need a soundtrack for 60s themed party

It was good but a little boring

Peter Gabriel was amazing and his music holds up. Games without Frontiers is an example of 40 + years of relevance. Genesis was one of my favorites.

In my memory they sounded better. Is it me?

Unquestionably spectacular. The dark sided themes as well as the heavy influence of drugs and alcohol started to make it hard to be a fan. That aside, this is still something special.

The songs that I liked seemed to be on some kind of slow mo speed. Most of the vocals are just not good. Only a few songs made this album worthy of a listen.

So good and nothing synthetic here. Even heard 2 tunes I never heard before. Ella was masterful. Gershwin songbook was a reminder of my parents playing music on the Victrolla. The albums all lined up on the circular table rack.
