Oh Stevie. Towering figure in music. I respect him far more than I enjoyed this sprawling record. Moments of genius but overall too saccharine for my palate. There’s a 45 minute clear 4* album in here, but (self imposed) rules are rules. Sorry.

Obviously an important artist. Plenty of ambition and inventiveness here, and a lot darker than I expected. The chorus of Tiny Dancer is worth waiting 15 minutes for. But I’ve never really liked his singing.

Some great writing here (as well as some garbage). I can hear the influence in rappers I like more. Also some really good production. But hasn’t aged that well for me.

One of those big names I respect more than I enjoy listening to. There were moments I really liked, but I didn’t always find the experimentation was done in that interesting a way. I’ve always found the Simon aesthetic a bit too clean and jaunty and his vocals a bit too thin to really grab me.

Essential? Maybe not. But I love it. I love the warmth, humour and pathos in the way he describes places and people. I love the way he talks about patty melts and naughyde stools and other things that are exotic to me. And I love it when the dawn cracks hard just like a bull whip and a dozen other descriptive moments. His best tunes are elsewhere but this captures a moment of brilliance from a wonderful observer and performer.

Probably my favourite album.

I didn’t really leave myself much room to manoeuvre by giving their debut 3. This didn’t really develop that sound in an interesting way for me and feels a bit disjointed.

It’s hard for me to understand how cold this leaves me when their debut was, and probably still is, one of my favourite albums of the period, and their gig in Glasgow (touring the debut) is one of my top five gigs. This just doesn’t do it for me. Pity. Really love Ocean of Noise though.

A bit too short.

I want to say something learned about why this is great, but there is something at work here that resists puny words. At his best Neil expresses pain and beauty and truth better than anyone else. We’re all just pissing in the wind, I guess. The world is better for this album existing.

Got better towards the end. But without this challenge I would never have found this out. It started very badly.

This band has a handful of songs I like. None of them seem to be on here.

I appreciate the invention and there are some lovely moments, but for me Yes often feels a bit too clever / contrived and lands a bit soulless and cold (as opposed to say KC, which hits me as effortless and joyful despite the complexity). A slice of cheddar straight from the fridge can be just the thing, just not what I fancied today.

Can definitely hear the influence on things I like more. Didn’t enjoy the vocals very much.

What is it masquerading as? I don’t get it. And I don’t like it very much.

There’s a directness and sense of sheer joy that Detroit garage rock achieves at its best that makes me smile. There are other versions of it that I enjoy more, but I’m pretty sure there were copying these guys. More importantly / simply, I enjoyed this a lot.

This is the sort of thing I like, but I don’t like it very much. It’s nice enough, but a little too pleased with itself for my taste maybe. Not enough vulnerability / rawness. Just leaves me cold somehow.

I thought this was almost aggressively OK. Perfectly fine and even quite accomplished, but far too neat and tidy to excite me.

There is pure intensity to the feeling on this album that sounds effortless and works with, but also transcends, its musical experimentation. Like guys who have something to say, and it’s going to come out however, and it can’t not be wonderful.

I enjoyed They Won’t Go When I Go.
