Can’t believe the average rating for this is so low. Yes, it’s simplistic pop rock but the hooks and melodies are immaculate and plentiful. Feels like a lot of the userbase on here seems to look down on stuff that’s too pop, whilst also looking down on anything that’s too “out there.”

LO FI BEATS TO STUDY AND RELAX TO [10 HOURS] [NON-COPYRIGHT]
Can’t believe the average rating for this is so low. Yes, it’s simplistic pop rock but the hooks and melodies are immaculate and plentiful. Feels like a lot of the userbase on here seems to look down on stuff that’s too pop, whilst also looking down on anything that’s too “out there.”
You failed! I can see, in abstract, why this made the list - presumably not long after release when the writers had to quickly decide which new releases were worthy of inclusion. On paper I think this is a fairly interesting and novel mix of trip hop and some influences from jazz and rave music. The problem is that whilst at first this is unexceptional but very listenable, you realllly feel that 57 minute runtime as the album approaches its second half. This would probably be a 3 if it were somewhere in the 40-45 minute region.
Really great. Nice subtle use of strings, good grooves and Walker has a wonderfully emotive voice.
Utterly chaotic. I vastly prefer deranged, anarchic Nick Cave to sad, contemplative Nick Cave and it’s pretty remarkable to listen to this and discover just how many artists were clearly taking direct influence.
I mean what can you say? The greatest pop album ever recorded.
Not great. Iron Butterfly deserve their place in music history as an important precursor to heavy metal but in practice this largely sounds like a bar band imitating the Doors. Again, absolutely should be on the list for its significance alone, but “significant” and “good” do not always overlap.
Madchester representation! Going to guess this one doesn’t land too well with the non-UK based users of this site.
Fun! But is it a law for all hip hop albums to be at least 15 minutes too long?
3.5 The hits from this that have lived on (Bad, Smooth Criminal, etc) remain all timers but this feels considerably more dated than both Off the Wall and Thriller in both production and songwriting
Don’t know how anyone on here is calling this bland when Soundgarden were objectively one of the most eclectic grunge bands. Will admit that this is too long and not for everyone but I’ve always loved this album.
One of THE iconic British albums in my book
Much like many Sepultura albums, it’s hugely frontloaded and tails off pretty hard, but this may honestly be my favourite record of theirs. Absolutely killer production with the crunchiest guitar tone and a nice mix of technicality and melody amidst all of the breakneck thrashing.
Not unpleasant but really just background noise at best
Three phenomenal voices, nothing interesting done with them harmonically. Country music is so awful man.
Immaculately composed and performed, but what do you get for all of that undeniable effort? An album that sounds like background music in a restaurant. I get why this is probably interesting if you’re a total theory nerd who wants to obsess over chord progressions and production techniques but that’s not what music is about for me.
Very listenable but nothing-y
Honestly as background noise this isn’t terrible or anything, it’s just absolutely punishing in its length. 140 minutes of more or less the same thing, with minimal variation, is a tough sell even if you love a genre, and I do not love drum and bass. If this is what new forms sound like I’m happy to settle for the old ones.
Really great. Psychedelic rock is usually a bit hit or miss for me, but this sounds a lot like early Pink Floyd, filtered through the Kinks’ more experimental stuff, and that’s a recipe for success
Horniest album of all time
Da Crapo Too many pan pipes. Less pan pipes please. “She Comes in Colors” is a pretty sweet song though.
Bad vocals, and the idea of “creating an atmosphere” is used as a crutch for a lack of interesting musical ideas. Would probably have this down as a 3 for being a bland nothing were it not an hour long.
I do like RHCP a good bit, but I’ve always felt that they are fundamentally a singles band rather than an albums band, which leads to quite a lot of fluff dragging down the overall quality. The hits are undeniable but you could easily trim 10-15 minutes off this and lose nothing of any real value.
Fun but SO of its time
Not deep or clever (the opposite, in fact) but such an entertaining listen. Kiss get far too much shit from music nerds.
I don’t normally like jazz and I know this is the classic “white guy who pretends to be into jazz” album but god damn this shit really does rule.
I think this is legitimately very clever and well done, it just never really elevates above “nice background noise” level for me
