Le Honk s'est perdu en route... Un grand artiste, certainement, mais hyper inscrit dans les attentes du public américain... C'est pas lui qui va les surprendre ou innover... Non, non... On est là pour conforter le public dans ses choix et... faire des sous ! Les 2 principaux axes et buts des artistes américains... Professionnel, pour sûr... Mais faire avancer le schmillblick...? Mais pourquoi donc ??? Puisque cette RECETTE éprouvée marche à fond... Donc, non ... C'est pas ma culture et ce n'est absolument pas ce que j'attends des artistes, au sens large d'ailleurs, en musique et dans tous les autres modes d'expression artistique...
Typical country with twangy guitars and lovelorn lyrics. Waylon is better with the quieter songs as he tends to shout on the more uptempo tracks. The arrangements are as simple as they could be. Dominated by a plodding bass line in nearly every case. Not for me and generally not very impressive,

What did I think of this? It kind of washed over me, to be honest. I can only assume it's so clasically country as to sound like a pastiche to my post-modern, 21st century, hyper pop-culture literate ears. Besides, as we know, I don't actually like country music that much, despite my best efforts (cf. my Willie Nelson review).
As if Hank Williams, Lefty Fritzell, George Jones, Merle Haggard etc never laid the path for being tough and vulnerable, muscular and sweet, Wailing Jennings sidles in with his dick dangling freely out of his zipper, orders shots for the whole bar and lays down some utterly useless guy music.
