Reviews (page 6 of 7)

I don't really love any of these songs, but I do like this strain of short, pithy country road house songs. They have sort of a bad pun or just a juxtaposition of words in the title, super simple, maybe some good guitar licks. I don't know - I like it.

I liked this! Have to be in the right mood for this kind of shit-kickin' country, and I suppose I was. The whole thing sounded pretty clear and fantastic coming through my fancy speakers. It's not the kind of James-Brown-good that I'm going to quickly listen to it again, but I definitely would. And after yesterday's ambient lull-fest it was nice to feel like I had a beer in my hand, even though I didn't. Or did I????

Interesting to read about, preferable to overproduced country rock, but still not all that compelling to me. Worked fine in the background like bar music.

The Wailin Jennys are terrific. Amazing harmonies driving some good bluegrass music. And all-star pun makers. (None of them are named Jenny.) In the spirit of the Wailin Jennys, here are some other groan-tastic country music puns and jokes: When I play country music for my chickens they start to sway and circle the coup to the music... It's poultry in motion! Technically, national anthems are just country music. Which Country Music Singer's name do you say when you're moving furniture past someone? Dolly Pardon. I asked what my sister was listening to, she says "LeAnn Rimes" and I says "with what?" If Keith Urban loves country music so much ... Why doesn't he change his name to Keith Rural?

Easy enough to have on in the background. Waylon has a good voice. There are a couple boring numbers such as Ride Me Down Easy and We Had It All.

Short and sweet outlaw country.

Easy listening

Un album bien normal, sans punch malheureusement . 3*

Fuck you, I love this.

I have heard a few tracks from Jennings, but I'm most familiar with his later career - "Willie, Waylon and the boys" - and that only in passing. All of the tracks on Honky Tonk Heroes were new to me. I enjoyed hearing a whole album, and I liked the music. The simple, but prominant, basslines were distracting sometimes. "You Asked Me To" and "Ain't No God in Mexico" grabbed my attention the most. This album is right on the edge between 3 and 4 stars. Perhaps Jennings' performance is enough reason to round up? --- it's 3.5 stars people, three-and-a-half.

Country and western folk

rustig, leuk, niet zo speciaal. Wel leuk om zo eens old school country te hebben, ga het misschien nog wel luisteren.

not bad, bit more bouncy country style, listed to this while cooking

Real country here!

seemed like "typical" country, but I don't listen to too much country to say that.

Not a country Fan.

Pretty good

Would go to a Waylon Jennings themed party.

Not a big fan of Outlaw country. This album is fine but no real standouts to me. This album appears to have made the list more for what it represents than the music itself. As Nick noted bring on GP.

Um álbum agradável, com uma vibe redneck por vezes e semelhante a Elvis por outras. As músicas são muito agradáveis é daqueles álbuns que metes e ninguém muda, mas dizer que é muito bom, também não consigo. Voltar a ouvir no futuro. Nota: 6/10 Nota:

Did a little background reading to get a better context for the album. Apparently Waylon was once Buddy Holly's bass player! I digress. I can appreciate the feel and attitude of this record. Origins of outlaw country, indeed, but I think I still prefer the cosmic American music of Gram Parsons and his crew from this era. Also, "We Had It All" kinda sucks. P.S. That's a particularly premature fadeout on "Lowdown Freedom," eh? Favourite track: "You Ask Me To"

country? but it made it interesting

Really enjoyed it - secret passion is a bit of country

Niet al te opvallend album, wat standaard cowboy-muziek

Yiiiiiiiiiiiiihhaaaaaaa

OK country and western album. Some really good songs, but not a groundbreaking album in my view.

Good honky tonk country music

Tuesday album Haiku review: Songs of heartland soul ### Country outlaw troubadour ### Melancholy wail ###

Mayormente estilo country americano. Sin tanto abuso de los instrumentos típicos. Se deja escuchar, pero no me ha significado nada.

Perfectly fine - easy listening

Bluesy vibes, not great, but enjoyable for a bit

Classic, new to me country.

Solid album, I enjoyed it.

Not my kind of music, but this was bearable.

Great country sound nothing really that special

Yeah. Kinda nice

Classic country sound from Waylon but not one of his best collections

Not bad actually. Definitely not something I'd throw on, but right venue, right place... it could be grand. Apparently this is Outlaw Country.

This is right at the end of that period when country for really bad. I can tolerate the rockabilly country. Today's country is just gross.

Fav Song: Honky Tonk Heroes

A surprisingly nice listen. I am not a lover of country, at all, I find most of it quite torturous. However, this is relaxing and pleasant. It sounds amiable, comfortable, like I've always known it and it's a friend.

This is pleasant enough country music. Wish it had a bit more propulsion and a little less schmaltzy 70s production, but it's fine.

Short, pretty uniform throughout. Good example of the "outlaw country" that Waylon helped popularize. It's fine, I just don't have any strong feelings about it. Favorite tracks: "Omaha", "Ain't No God in Mexico"

Surprisingly enjoyable!

Learning a lot about myself while doing this project. Going to go partially off track here, so stay with me now. Most forms of Jazz are not my thing. I find them mostly boring, but still at the bare minimum they’re easy to listen to unless it’s a Freeform quartet, in which case it’s usually torturous. That being said, I usually give them a 3. There have been good Jazz albums that have surprised me. But Country music?? It’s all trash across the entire board. It’s not fun to listen to, it’s not easy to listen to, and I just certifiably do not enjoy it in any form that isn’t just Johnny Cash, the exception to the rule. From the second I hear that familiar guitar sound, and the hillbilly voice, I’m instantly in agony, longing for any other album. Honky Tonk may be one of the worst sub genres to exist. This just sounds like every single other Country album I’ve listened to on this site, which is to say it’s getting a 2 star review. The first song was not terrible, besides his voice. There were moments of enjoyment, notably when he wasn’t singing. The rest of this album though?? I’m glad it was only 27 minutes long, because man was it tough to get through. Just couldn’t get through it a second time. Got about 80% of the way through so I could see if it scrapes out a 3, but it’s just so terrible, I couldn’t manage it. “Honky Tonk Heroes” is my favorite, I guess. But I still don’t really even like that. Less than a week ago I rolled another Country album that I had to give a 1. I do not give many 1’s. This album wasn’t half as miserable as that one was, but I still personally believe this was more bad than good. Going to give it a 2.7 and call it a day. If there’s one thing I’m happy about it’s that the site is just knocking out all the terrible Honky Tonk early so I can get back to enjoying the actual music. Not much more I can stretch out this review with. At the moment, before I click vote, here’s a quick rundown of my Bottom 3 sub genres. If you think I’m not qualified to review this properly, I would agree. I openly hate Country music. In third place at the bottom is Jazz, at 2.86/5. In second place, we’ve got Foll, sitting at 2.83/5. Drumroll please, and keep in mind this is before I give this the 2 it rightfully deserves, Country is at the very bottom, at a staggering 2.33/5. Does good Country music exist?? Or is it just Johnny Cash, who I gave a 4. I’m truly starting to believe that it’s all just actual garbage. Only time will tell, but I’m dreading the day when I roll more. Not a fan. Ok, that’s enough of that. Boring album, not a fan of the voice, and the instrumentation was simple and boring as well. Moving on.

Mid level country album.

Not really my kind of music, but ok in the background

Lyder ret godt for genren ig

Meh, country is really not my thing.

for some pleasant and nostalgic country tune, this is a good choice. It’s rather specific old country classic and likely a niche audience. i still enjoy it.

i usually like old country music but this was just not hitting for me 5/10 Favourite: Honky Tonk Heroes Least Favourite: Ain't No God In Mexico

06/06 Boring

When an album contains its own genre or style in the title, 99% of the time it's a sign that it's going to be the most generic and uninteresting thing you've ever heard, and this album here is absolutely no exception. It sure it honky tonk, and the album just reaaalllyyyy wants you to know that. I always do my best to give every album I listen to on here as much of an in depth and insightful review as I can, but sometimes when you get one that's this boring, it's made very hard to do that.

Generic country music, another one that makes no sense being on this list.

Para ser country se la bancó bastante. Medio ranchera la cosa, suena a estar en un rodeo en Nueva Mexico. 4/10

Yeehaw.

Awful, I really hate this. Stand-outs - Black Rose - We Had It All

The title track is surprisingly awesome. The rest of this one is the same sappy bullshit I’ve come to expect from most country albums on this list.

I don't mind a little honky tonk every now and then.

Sarmadi

not bad, not really my style tho. kinda reminds me of something arthur morgan would bop to

fine ppoo i hated it its should die in a deep deep dark hole because it was so fuckinb bad please erase this from my memory

Billy Joe Shaver writes a great song. The performances are pretty boring but the guitar and harp sound great.

I'm afraid I may have rated this a bit lower than it deserves, but I've had three country albums in quick succession and I'm sick of it now. This is where this list reflects its US origins - looking from anywhere else in the world, it makes so sense at all that so many country albums get to be on here but nothing from many other places' traditional music.

I just wanna drive my fish, drink my truck, kiss my beer

Počuvateľný country album.

Кантрі бляха!!!

I'm definitely not a country music fan, but I'm trying to give country albums a chance when they pop up in the list. Prior to listening to this, the only Waylon Jennings song I was familiar with was the Dukes of Hazard theme song. So, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. A bit of research tells me that this is regarded as one of the first "Outlaw Country" albums, and the sparser, rock and roll influenced instrumentation apparently makes country music tolerable to me. Standout tracks were "Honky Tonk Heroes" and"Black Rose." The last song, "We Had It All", didn't really fit the vibe of the album and was a limp piece of syrupy crap that knocked an entire star off of the rating. It was apparently forced upon Jennings by his label, so it isn't his fault.

Fine, I suppose! Nothing really stuck out for me, but it’s less than 30 minutes long. Favourite track: Black Rose

Could be the soundtrack to Smokey and the Bandit. Not terrible, but bog standard country fare.

Country songs about drinking. It's not the worst country as some of these tracks have personality, but it's still country, often jangly. 2/5

Neun der zehn Tracks stammen aus Shavers Feder, darunter „Old Five and Dimers Like Me", „Willy the Wandering Gypsy and Me" und das titelgebende „Honky Tonk Heroes (Big Mama's Opus)".

This was sort of decent. I liked it more in the latter half of the record. Favourite Track(s): Honky Tonk Heroes Least Favourite Track(s): Old Five and Dimers (Like Me)

Didn’t love it

Don't know anything about this guy, but I can guarantee he was addicted to alcohol based solely on this music

< the Beatles

One of my least favourite genres, but this was more palatable than others I’ve endured on this list, so it has to be a 2

I’m definitely not into honky tonk and classic country. I like dark country, Johnny Cash and some Willie Nelson. But if I had to pick a honky tonk album to listen to, it would be this

Aside from We Had it All and Honky Tonk Heroes, the rest of the songs were pretty tedious to listen to. Not horrible, but not great. 2.4/5 -> 2/5

It was OK if you like that kind of thing. Unfortunately this style of country isn’t my bag. Waylon has a great voice and I listened twice through, but I’m unlikely to want to revisit any time soon.

It's a nice country record. Well played but I didn't feel it was especially significant

70's Country

Как же Я устал от этого ебаного кантри

At least it was short

Not a country and western fan.

Can't get into this. I'd like to but I just don't dig it.

1.5 - Country music just isn't for me. It's not unlistenable or anything though.

Encore et toujours de la country...

This is perfectly good at what it does, but what it does isn't interesting to me.

2 out of 5 Not a reflection of this album, but more of a preference. Not a country fan, but a couple songs were enjoyable.

sorry i just can't no country please

I'm sorry. I hate country. I think this might be good country? But I still hate it.

Listened to one song with Kori while he made me an espresso

Still not a country fan. But I will admit this one was better than most country I’ve heard. Either way I’d be happy for this genre to vanish.

Put this on while I was working. Apart from noticing some excellent finger-picking now and again, and some evident melancholy (they look much jollier in the picture) it didn't really distract me from work, and now I can't remember much about it.

I can't stand country. This isn't the worst, but it definitely isn't changing my mind. The best thing this album has going for it is that it is less than 30 minutes. This is just some of the most generic inoffensive sounding country.. High 2.

I enjoyed the last song on the album and not much else

Još jedan dosadni country album, ne mogu više...

Good album Song I like: We had it all,

I can tell that this isn't terrible, but just isn't my thing at all

Not my cup of tea.

Better than I thought. Not a huge country fan, but don't mind this kind of "classic country". Songwriting is great and production is clean. Most songs just fade into nothing , sort of how this album sticks with you . Nice but forgettable

yeah i didn't really care about this one at all sorry. cowboy yippee yeehaw

okay… too many 70s guitar albums pls

Country music, especially this style, does very little for me. It's generally too slow and plodding, or lifeless to hook me.

Some great slide guitar on here, would listen again

I enjoyed this, although I prefer “Singer of Sad Songs” as an album. A solid two stars. Tom.

Some nice stuff but in the end outdated, dusty old songs.

So not my style.

Not the worst country album I've heard. But it's still a country album.

Okay, minder lidt om Johnny Cash

STOP MED HONKY TONK

didn’t care much for this , not bad just not my cup of tea

A fine sounding country album for the early 1970s, but man does Waylon Jennings have many albums. This one isn't even over 30 minutes long.

The sound of another time. I like Waylon’s voice, but the backing & songs didn’t really speak to me,

This wasn't the outlaw album as advertised. It was country twee with only a slight hint of rebellion. There's nothing dark or sinister, only country-lite songs that seem to be sung with a smile and no menace. Sure, you don't always want gloom. But you don't always want generic country crap either.

Not too bad actually. Bluesy easy listening

It’s old country. Not my cup of tea, but I can see how someone would enjoy this.

A little slow for my liking but Waylon is classic for a girl from Tennessee!

boooring

it was okay, decent country record

Not my kind of music.

I have love/hate relationship with country music and this leans more on the hate side, but wasn't impossible to listen to

Yeah, another country album, like many others. Jennings' voice is better in my opinion than most I've heard before, but in reality the songs are a bit of a nothingburger to me. I really would like to give it 3 stars, but cannot really think of many reasons to do so. 2/5

It didn’t all sound the same! Not my fav type of music

Not for me

can someone hear our chatter

I remain unexcited about country music.

Das Album hält konstant ein relativ unspektakuläres und wenig interessantes Level.

Grad so

Wieder ein Country-Album, das mich nicht überzeugt hat. Fand es jetzt aber auch nicht komplett furchtbar.

Very kind for this to only be 27 minutes, for that — it gets a bonus star! But man do I hate honky tonk music.

Country Music is the only musical genre I dislike, not to mention he didn't even write these songs, and it's under 30 minutes long. At least there were a handful of catchy jingles. Favorite Track: "Honky Tonk Heroes".

Типичнейшее кантри. Лучшая песня: Honky Tonk Heroes

Predictable and basic country music for idiots

Zuhause, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Langweilt mich gottlos.

Ol’ Jaylon Wennings is on the case, ready to surely deliver a mediocre romp featuring the phrase “Honky Tonk” several times. There are some all time stinker words and phrases in our language but Honky Tonk glows red with the hatred of a thousand demonic entities. It only takes two words to keep me out of a place. “Keep Out” for example. “High Voltage” comes to mind. “Disemboweling Fog.” Yikes! Honky Tonk has that same effect. Yet here I enter, as if I am to have my intestines removed by a mysterious malevolent fog, I stare into the cold abyss. Tune that steel guitar and cast me into the red light emanating from it. Honky Tonk Heroes - The prophecy is fulfilled. Clean 70’s country is pretty boring. Colour me uhh pretty bored. Old Five and Dimers (Like Me) - So you’re a Honky Tonk hero, you’re an Old five and dimer. Make up your mind, pal. I swore he said fast fucks in this heartfelt ballad. I was flabbergasted. Alas, he just said “fast bucks.” There is something so deeply depressing about this. Not even in a good way. Just music to numbly stare at the wallpaper to. Willy the Wandering Gypsy and Me - Whoa. A mysterious lil nomad man!? I can’t stress enough how much we need songs about freaks. Unless this is just about Willie Nelson. Low Down Freedom - I’m not sure I like the frog voice. I think I first heard Waylon Jennings in Grand Theft Auto 5. While that is incredibly embarrassing, I really did think he was a parody artist for the game. This warble isn’t doing it. I LOVE a good warble. A holler is my heaven. This particular one, is really bad. Omaha - We’re picking up the pace here. Probably the best thing going so far. You Ask Me To - Alright. This isn’t earth shaming but it’s growing on me a little bit. Much like a fungus. Ride Me Down Easy - Some gospel tones here in amongst the frog croaking. This continues down the path I look for in country. Hobo mentioned Ain’t No God in Mexico - Uhhhh. In order to describe this song title I’d usually jokingly say “It was the 70’s!” But this shit would make an appearance in a real political debate these days. Black Rose - I don’t know. This is fine? We Had it All - I wish I could type in Waylon Jennings frog voice. Him saying he used to touch your hair in his quivering frog vibrato is probably the funniest thing I’ve heard in a week or so. Slow Rollin’ Low - The only track bearing the tag “Remastered” fills me with suspicion that this isn’t part of the record. Seeing as it’s really not going to swing me either way, I suppose it really doesn’t matter. Although it does extend my time with Waylon. Bittersweet record today. There were moments I enjoyed but ugh this is just so generic. It’s paint by numbers radio country. At least in my head. Hey, this guy might have been the blueprint for some people, but this has no spark, no edge and just a whole bunch of mediocre ideas. It’s fine. It wasn’t a hard listen, but it didn’t spark anything within me, except maybe the urge to giggle at the frog man. An uneventful Tuesday. Add another corpse to the pile. 2-2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Omaha, Ride Me Down Easy

Midddd. Just not my taste. Droned on and on

Recognizing that he’s an important artist for C&W but this album doesn’t do anything for me.

Sure sounds like an American country album. And I'm not a country fan AT ALL. But at least it's short, and the bass guitar sounds nice.

An influential album in the sub-genre of outlaw country, apparently. I'm not overly interested by this, it sounds like pretty standard yee-haw stuff to me

This was ok. For country music. I liked the first song. The rest not so much.

Listening to this nowadays - yes, it does sound alright and it's pretty chill to just have playing in the background, but it is definitely quite an outdated album. Overall, not too bad but I just keep thinking about the most intense stuff that came out a couple of years after this.

country , 1973 -> 2

Too country to be enjoyable

Thought this would be awful but it’s a million times better than the fucking Louvin Brothers.

I appreciate the opportunity to listen to this one, although the genre is not my favorite. My favorite Waylon Jennings records would be those he made during his time with Buddy Holly as a member of the Crickets. I like the story of an established country music artist, chafing under the creative restrictions placed upon him by his label, getting creative control and breaking out to greater success while creating Outlaw music, a new subgenre of country.

Generally speaking, I dislike country music. I tried very hard to go into this album with an open mind, and I know Waylon Jennings is a legend. Try as I might, however, this just doesn't work for me. The story telling was unconvincing, in part because the lyrics seem simple and obvious, and each song felt like just the same story told just a little bit differently. It feels like a lot of cosplaying about some imagined past (or present) reality. And while the music is good, it's not notable in any way...not something a long list of good musicians could produce. A harsh review that undoubtedly speaks to my general dislike of the genre. If one likes the genre, I can see liking this album a lot for sure. Even then, I'm not convinced this is in the top 1001 one needs to here. As ever, glad I gave something a try I never would have listened to on my own.

Generic country. Better than most country, I didn't mind having it on in the background, but i have no interest in hearing it again.

Great voice, hate the accompaniments.

A little too much country for my taste but not bad. 2.5

A short outlaw country from the mid 1970s, the singing is nice and the closing song is quite different from the rest. I don't know much about country, and I don't see myself coming back to this album but this was an OK listen.

3/10 Country music is not a genre that I typically spend much time with and, as a consequence, I feel like the bar I set for it is much higher than other types of music. When I hear really top-tier country, I can engage with it, but the more middle of the road stuff often just doesn’t grab me at all. It’s typically a very formulaic genre with a very consistent sound between different artists and, if you like that sound, there’s a lot to enjoy, but it’s rarely for me. For the most part, I found this to be ok. The more energetic tracks did get me tapping my feet, and the songs were so short that they rarely outstayed their welcome, but it all just felt like a wash of country, none of which really stuck with me for long after the end of each track. There are also a couple of really odd aspects to this album. Firstly, the bass is way too loud, it almost overwhelms the lead vocal, which is super weird, especially as, from a compositional point of view, it’s the most basic element of the whole thing, largely just plodding away. When it’s given that much prominence, it doesn’t really benefit the songs. The other thing is that, for a good few of the tracks, the engineer seemed to just give up part way through and drop the faders. The fade outs were inexplicable, as sometimes there would be a change in the song, a solo, or Waylon would still actually be singing, and the producer would give up and end the song. Which was super weird. Overall, while this isn’t something I’ll be going back to, I also didn’t find it particularly terrible or offensive. But I’m, also glad it was only 27 minutes long. Honky Tonk Heroes - I was not convinced at all by the intro to this track, but once it kicks in, it’s decent. There’s not a great deal to it, composition-wise, but it’s pretty good fun and has a decent swing to it and a bit of attitude. Weirdly, they throw a slightly interesting rhythmic change in at the end that sounds like it’s going somewhere, but fade it out. Old Five and Dimers (Like Me) - This is so slow and plodding, and this type of croony vocal just doesn’t really do it for me. This song just sort of exists and then stops existing without much more to remark on. Willy the Wandering Gypsy and Me - Similarly to the previous track, this just sort of plods along. It’s got a bit more to it when the fiddle comes in, but it aside from that it just doesn’t do enough to grab me. And then it fades out while he’s still singing! So weird. Low Down Freedom - This has got a bit more pace and dynamic to it. There’s a bit more range to some of the instrumentation too, particularly some of the less front of stage parts. I’m getting a bit more out of the range of the lead vocal too. It still feels quite ‘country by numbers’ to me, but it’s fairly enjoyable. And again it fades out while he’s still singing! Omaha - The pace is still up. There’s not a great deal to it compositionally, but it’s got some backing vocals to add a bit of extra variety to things, which works quite well. It’s not bad, but it’s also not vastly interesting. At two and a half minutes, I guess it doesn’t need to be though. You Ask Me To - A return to the more croony vocal delivery that rubs me up the wrong way. The solo bits are quite nice, but overall, the dominating and uninteresting bass line and overly hard strummed rhythm guitar aren’t helping me to enjoy this. The best bit of the track gets faded away. Ride Me Down Easy - This just plods along, with very limited musical content. It’s maybe got a bit more going for it tonally than some of the other slow songs, but it’s still not really gripping me. But it does have a proper ending. Ain’t No God In Mexico - A bit of pace again. As with previous tracks, thinhgs get moving a bit more when the players get to have some solos, but it’s not the most engaging track and it’s so short it almost doesn’t get going before it’s done. Black Rose - Stick your thumbs in your belt loops and chew on a stalk of wheat, this here’s some country music. It’s got a nice lilt to it. It’s so unapologetically country, particularly with the vocal harmonies, but it does it pretty well and had me tapping my toes. We Had It All - More croony stuff. A very thin composition and it feels quite stylistically different from the rest of the album. Too much reverb and the bass seems even louder than the rest of the album. What a bad way to end the album.

I listened twice and cane away blank. Nice country, blues rock, ambient jazz? I couldnt tell you

Of all the country albums to pick from…

447/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

This is my grandfather’s country music. Just too dated and out of my style preference for me to fully appreciate.

Started OK - I like the production more than Dwight Yoakam. He doesn't have the whiny quality to his voice. But the songs just aren't that good or memorable.

Too country for me...

not really bad, but not a country fan. feels like a very OG kind of country tho, interesting listen

Well, this is pretty generic fare. Nothing to excite me here.

I enjoyed the title track. That’s about it. It’s fine but honky tone really ain’t my thing.

Short, sweet, good toe tapping rocking chair type music, enjoyed it but likely only in small doses

For country it's ok. Not my favorite, but I enjoyed listening.

Not for me/5 Honestly though, good singing, good country. Just doesn't do anything for me.

Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Ain't No God In Mexico Honky Tonk Heroes "Outlaw" country isn't nearly as edgy as one might given what it meant to be an outlaw in the mid west in the 1800s. To be honest, all I could think about when I read the album blurb was Carol/Cheryl/Charlene/Cristal from the TV show Archer yelling "Outlaw Country" over and over again while singing Danger Zone with Kenny Loggins . But anyways... I categorically dislike nearly all country I've come across, and so this is no different. If I am going to listen to this kind of music, it might as well be the Grateful Dead: El Paso, Loser, Deal, Mexicali Blues, Jack Straw, etc. They are my one exception, but really, the really blur the line between country and psychedelic rock, especially once you get into the 80s live shows. There's obviously overlap between Waylon Jennings and the Dead; I just wasn't impressed.

Wonky Tanked Zeros

Its good and polished and listenable, but......it just isn't for me at all.

Black Rose is a fun song. Appreciate the musicianship here and there but overall too slow for me.

Nothing wrong with the music, but it is not to my taste. The album has the same song feel the whole way through, varying very little.

Just cant seem to get onto it. Can't find anything very interesting to appreciate

I was expecting some old-fashioned, dated country music from Honky Tonk Heroes, but I was pleasantly surprised. This album is far better than I anticipated. It’s classic country at its finest—rich with melody and storytelling that weaves pain, hope, and love into every track. The album is short and sweet, making it an easy, enjoyable listen. While I liked it, I’m not sure it’s something I’ll come back to regularly. Favourite tracks: “Omaha” and “Willy the Wandering Gypsy and Me” Least favourite track: Honestly, every song was worth a listen. Album artwork: The cover captures a joyful moment—everyone looks like they’re having a great time.

That was surprisingly uninspiring. It was pleasant enough background but didn't do much for me.

I didn't hate this as much as I expected to, but even at only 27 minutes long, it felt like an eternity to get through. I'd like to think my musical palette is fairly diverse, however I have very little time for this type of "bandit country" music. I'm sure this was an important album in some way, shape or form as to find itself on this list (or am I?), but it's just too rudimentary by today's standards.

Rating: 5/10 Meh.

First country album. Not bad, but not great.

Big 3 day drought for me with country related music. This is actually pretty good and flows perfectly. I dont like this music but I appreciated this album because of the pace mostly. A really faithful album to the generes roots.

Hyper-predictable country. Nah. I'll give it a 2 because it's "not bad at what it does".

As stated before, I'm not a big fan of country music. Nor am I a fan of 70s country production. Thankfully, this mostly avoided the terrible wall-of-backing-vocals, excessive slide guitars, and unnecessary string sections. Well, up until the last track, which is so schmaltzy with strings that Jennings should be ashamed to be on it, but I guess he isn't since it's the only song he co-produced, and noted on the front cover artwork. Overall, it's just ok for me. Nothing I would likely revisit, but it wasn't a pain to get through either. Best: "Black Rose", "Low Down Freedom" Worst: "We Had It All"

Probably the easiest country album I have listened to. We had it all was my favourite track.

im not american. 2.25

Better than I was expecting it to be but not sure that I'd go back to it again

2,5/5 Definitely not an album I'd normally listen to. All in all, it's all right; there are a few cool tracks here and there ("Old Five and Dimers (Like Me)", "Black Rose", and "We Had It All"), but most of it is just ok.

I didn't think this to be his best. Kinda raw, less than polished.

Much too slow. Bit boring. But can appreciate it is probably a good example of its genre.

At first, I though I would really like this album. I don't know why I had that though, beceause this is just another country album like anyother. At least is very short.

5/10. It is a pleasant, but seemingly forgettable country album.

Not totally terrible for a country album but not anything I would listen to again.

Boring country music

Themed country with a reasonable tempo. It doesn’t quite lean into the outlaw theme fully so it doesn’t get to parody levels but still plenty to like if that’s your thing. It doesn’t really do it for me but it’s fine and short enough that it didn’t become a difficult listen.

He has a cool voice, and the guitar has great tone ..

Pleasant old school country. I’m not mad at it.

I am transported back to childhood holidays in the 90's where the people that listened to this kind of thing when they were young were still going on all inclusive coach holidays to Tenby. An aging Welsh crooner is the hotel's evening entertainment, I'm sitting as a 7 year old with an appletiser and a packet of walkers cheese and onion crisps. Two old couples are slow dancing on the parquet floor and the rest of the old biddies are sitting around the edge of the room slowly clapping along with glasses of sherry on the table. Not an unpleasant genre but it instantly feels dated and, for me at least, it doesn't have the much impact left in 2025.

Like a few of them and some of the more Texas feeling ones but not for me. Almost Elvisy at times but with even more than re country. Wish all songs were like the last one on album. Feel like his other music is better than this album

Rangers died in 2012

Para ser country podría ser peor

JUST STOP. 2/5

Some standard old country. Not my favorite music, but this wasn’t bad. 2/5 Probably won’t listen again

Funny to hear typical 70s music again. Once in a while is enough.

Yeah not for me. Not terrible, just boring.

Kuultu ja unholaan…

It’s a country album

Quite the contrast from Public Enemy's "It Takes a Nation....." that dropping in the previous day :D I find this plinky-plunky country hard to get on with. Could happily listen to, say, Kenny Rogers all day, but this is just too twee and annoying.

Old-school country music. Sounds like Johnny Cash with a less unique voice. Not my thing.

I just can't get into Country...

Not a fan of honky tonk

Overall: 4/10 I'm really trying NOT to be a country hater cause I actually think there's a lot of merit to country, I just rarely if ever enjoy it. Even when I do, I never want to relisten to it. When it comes to this album, I mostly don't enjoy his voice. Fav Song: Old Five and Dimers (Like Me) Least Fav Song: We Had It All

Fine but not really for me

🤷 Probably the best thing I can say is it didn't over stay its welcome. Not terrible or anything, but not really doing much for me either. 2.5

Not my kind of music but I see how this can be good. Classic country is so much better than contemporary or even Country music from the last 30 years. (10 known/15 new)

Smooth voice. Feels more like a random collection of tracks than a proper record

It's hard for me to appreciate any country before the general Garth Brooks era of the genre, and this is no exception. It's not offensively bad, and it was a brisk 27 minutes, so it wasn't hard to get through. I just didn't enjoy it much. 2.4

Cool voice, not my jam

It started swell, but by the end, even though it wasn't that long, I was growing tired of this album. I'm giving it 2 stars, as I didn't enjoy much of what I heard.

Didn't kill me.

The single word and phrasing when he sings "HAARRRRNKY Tonk heroes like me!," automatically makes this a one star album. But pronouncing California as Californy sort of makes up for it...it's a delicate balance between the honk and the tonk, you see.

I mean it’s fine, but I was bored. I liked the use of harmonica I suppose. My favorite song here was the title track.

Waylon Jennings reminds me of my grandparents. So he's kind of a good listen, but only in a nostalgic way.

Need 1/2 stars. Not a 2 but not a 3. Not a lot of experience with Waylon Jennings but I like what I hear over time has 4 star potential. obviously if you have experience with an album, you’re more inclined to get a better rating but at one time listen is tough.

My oldest daughter got me into country music, I'm diggin' this more and more all the time,

Booooooring. Hard to believe this was only 27 minutes long to be fair. It gets two stars for not being actively horrible, but I can do without it.

Old country is better than new country to me, but this album did not do a lot for me despite Waylon at times sounding a bit like Johnny Cash. I think it was just a more stripped down simple sound with backing music that was not as interesting as say Marty Robbins. Black Rose stood out to me. I think there absolutely needs to be an effort by 311 to take the song Omaha and make it into their own style with a cover.

Ihan kiva. Kuulostaa Disney-versiolta aidosta honkey tonkista, mutta ehkä sen mielikuvan aiheuttaa kiillotetun kuuloinen tuotanto. Aika romanttisia biisejä.

2- Stars (4/15)

Not my cup of team, but the production on this record is fantastic.

I just really do not like country music. I can’t connect with it and the only real relief here was how short this record is. I am giving a bonus star for the quite superb harmonica performances on display, however.

ich ha chli vermuetet dass mir das no chönt pässle. erste song macht alles vo langsam bis uptempo country mit coole giti solos er singt saauguet. und de bass funny dum dum dum dum. old fivr and dimers chli meh basic und willy the wandering dingsbums au sehr schleppend und s berüehrt mich jetz nöd sonderlich. low down freedom macht wieder chli meh aber er mengmol sochli kermit time? mit die stimme? omaha au sehr basic. würkli nöd soo spannend. you ask me to seeeehr geili slide gitarre ich lieb steel giti gad au fuck yes jo so mue da sii. aint no god in mexico?? gitarre banger song langwilig?? aber wiso kei. gottt döt? entweder s giten ider nöd oder?? we had it all isch coool es basically bass und striicher im refrain huuere geil.

It’s very short which helps because I don’t think it’s that good

Better than expected, but I didn't expect much. 2.5 stars.

This is so boring wow

Have you heard any country album, ever? Then you’ve heard this

This sounds like every parody of country, had no idea it actually existed

I fail to see this as necessary. So, here's a recipe: Mini Pecan Pie Ingredients • 1 pie crust storebought or homemade • 1/3 cup light corn syrup • 1/4 cup brown sugar • 1 and 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted • 1 egg lightly beaten • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 cup chopped pecans Directions • Preheat oven to 350°F • On a lightly floured surface, roll the pie dough out into a 12-inch circle. Using a 3-inch cookie cutter (or glass), cut out 12 circles from the dough • Place each piece of dough in each muffin cavity of a 12-count muffin pan, making sure each piece comes up the sides just a little bit (you may need to stretch the dough just a bit). Transfer the muffin pan to the refrigerator while you making the filling. • In a mixing bowl, mix together the corn syrup, brown sugar, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract until fully combined; then mix in the chopped pecans. Remove the muffin pan from the refrigerator. Evenly distribute the filling (about 1 full tablespoon) between all 12 muffin cavities, making sure the pecan pie filling does not come up over the edges of the dough. • Bake at 350°F for about 25 minutes or until the filling is set. Remove from the oven and cool in the pan for about 10 minutes

County fair bandstand background music. Not for me.

So straight up country you have to respect it. Not my music at all.

Huge meh

This is the kind of country that I just always associate with the word ‘country’. This to me was extremely typical and very much so expected. It wasn’t absolutely horrible but I honestly would not listen to this because this is exactly what turns me away from this genre.

As a big fan of Buddy Holly and the Crickets, I want to like Waylon Jennings music, and while I respect the place this album has in outlaw country's formation, it doesn't hit resonate with me the way a Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, or even Marty Robbins album does.

Was ok. Got a bit bored

More outlaw; less country, please. I enjoyed the rockabilly bits. Also, the fade-outs on every single track annoyed me. Finish a song!

Normal cowboy music with predictable format and rhymes. Totally fine. Nothing spesh

In a similar vain to plenty of other country music, I found this to be ok for the most part, but nothing remarkable. I write this review the day after listening, and I honestly don’t recall any songs standing out for me. It was not offensive to my ears by any means. In fact, I found it pleasant. However, it would be hard to argue any greatness for an album that has completely fallen out of my memory in less than 24 hours. I think a simple “fine” sums this album up well enough.

God I dread C&W albums. This is no better no worse. At least it's short.shirt. 2

Я делаю себе обещание: я не поставлю этому альбому 1 звезду, но если я услышу еще хотя бы один хонки тонк в этом списке, все они будут автоматически направлены в 1 стар территорию. Лучшая песня - We Had It All.

Not my kind of music at all, but I'll give it an extra star for "the devil made me do it the first time - the second time I done it on my own"

It's got an old country sound that I usually enjoy, but this one was otherwise very underwhelming

Yeah. Just no. Not a honky nor a tonky type person. Tried a couple. Made it through the whole title track. Didn’t kill me. There’s my positive review at trying something new 😊.

Was listening to Nancy and Lee again over the weekend. Wow that is a distinctive beautifully crafted album. This is just generic country.

The whole is somehow.less than the sum of the individual musician's parts (which are pretty good). It's a country thing. +1 for having such a great name.

Fairly pedestrian

I tried to listen, not bad, just not my vibe.

Country básico que não me demonstrou maior importância.

It's a classic of the Outlaw Country genre, but I'll be honest that for me the big redeeming factor of this album is its runtime of 27 minutes. It's really not overstaying its welcome. The first track was a bit country rock and I was looking forward to a bit more Honky Tonk, but the rest of the album was a lot more pure country. I fully understand why this is considered a classic in its genre. But its genre is just not for me.

Not a big country fan but quite enjoyed this.

Eh. This was fine. Kinda the same song ten times. Everyone faded out. And every one sounded the same.

I'm sorry to say, this one just wasn't for me. I'm not a country music fan, though I do appreciate a bit of the outlaw country subgenre. The fact that Willie Nelson supported this one did pique my interest a bit. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into it. The honky tonk style just doesn't do much for me. I appreciate that Jennings is one of the stars of the subgenre and I didn't explicitly hate it. But it's just not one I'd return to.

It was ok for country music I guess.

Pleasantly fine

Not for me

Pretty neat guitar licks, but I do not like this music at all.

I like the story of the album more than the album itself ... damn record companies. The songs, lyric wise, are indeed interesting but when I compare this to some of the other albums I listen to I can't quite justifty a 3.

This was not enjoyable at all. It was just boring to me, and I just really don’t love the twang LOL. not awful but certainly not good.

cheap country music

This guy must have won a competition to make the 1001 list. I thought it was comedy.

Waylon was a fixture at the annual fair. Saw him a few times and while not a country fan, I prefer his style of country to today's. But not my fav

Bit drab. Not my vibe.

It's honky tonk, plain and simple. I don't hate it. I know Jennings is an old-time country figurehead, but nothing about this really jives with me

Alright, for what it is

He maybe revered in country circles but it all kind of sounds the same to me.

Never really listened to country music enough to go beyond people like Johnny Cash or Dolly Parton. I'm not too sure about this album. There are no songs that I would go back and seek out to listen to.

not my kind of music

I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would! I don't mind a bit of country blues (I don't tell anyone!!) Listened to it a couple of times. Reckon I'll pop this one on, time to time. The slide guitar is a little grating, for that it gets a 2 :-)

I like to think I have a pretty wide music taste, but my ability to enjoy country music is pretty limited I must admit! I'm sure there is nothing wrong with this album, its just not my thing and so I found it really boring to get through. Not unlistenable, but I don't need to hear it again for the rest of my life! Death to harmonicas

i dont really like country music

Country again

YEEEEEEEEEEHAWWWWWWWWW

Just not my jam, I will always struggle with C&W no matter how hard I try.

yeee haww

Honky Tonk Heroes sounds exactly like what the album cover looks like. It's a guy singing old outlaw style country music, there's not too much more to say about it really. Best: Honky Tonk Heroes Worst: We Had It All

This just isn't for me. I listened to it, but I certainly wouldn't again. I don't hate it, it's just not my cup of tea.

It just all sounds the same to me. His voice isn't particularly great and the cliched vocals are annoying. Some pretty good guitar playing, though.

It was ok.

Pretty amazing, it's not at all my usual type of listening, but i really enjoyed the novelty and difference of how music was presented by it. I think its damn good, and I would happily listen to it again.

(Sleepy face)
