I started at a 3 but it continued slipping down to a 2. I found myself waiting for it to be over numerous times. I'm not a fan of his vocal style; apparently I can deal with it when hearing a track come on randomly, but over and over on an album... yea no. Scar Tissue is pretty good though.
not a fan of her voice. I'm guessing this is held in high regard due to her Warhol / Velvet Underground association? First one in awhile I opened Spotify to see how much was left...
who names their band this? Yea this sucks. I mean I appreciate weirdness but it's not good.
*sigh* I mean, there are some parts of the 🎵 music 🎵 that are good. Some. But I just can't on the vocals. I already hate growling style but this is just too much. I knew what I was getting into and yet still... That's two albums in two weeks that have really tried the commitment I made to actually listen to these all the way through.
Perhaps a little generous, but this is getting a 3.5 rounded up. No massive stand out hits but the overall sound is fantastic classic rock without the cheesiness or overplayed aspect of some of the other bands of the time.
No desire to listen again, but I respect the skill and artistry. Appreciate the educational intro too.
Very good, I recognize some of these from general poo culture and music history.
This is the 50s/60s style I definitely like. In fact the path Spotify went down after the album finished has been delightful.
Hmm, this would be a 2.5 if I could do half stars. Of all the electronic based music I listen to, this would go at the bottom, so I suppose that's a 2.
Honestly a 4.5. Really liked it, but I hold the 5 stars rating at such a high level it doesn't quite hit it.
Another solid 4.5 that falls to the 4 star rating side, really wish we could do half stars. I'm a little "over" Epic, but the rest is super good. Can't mistake those bass lines for many other bands.
The day before his deathiversary too, what timing. I miss albums that were more varied and dynamic like this.
not a fan of her voice. I'm guessing this is held in high regard due to her Warhol / Velvet Underground association? First one in awhile I opened Spotify to see how much was left...
solid 4. More interesting than some techno style albums.
I dig the music and instrumentals. Perhaps it's heresy but his iconic voice gets to be a bit much when listening to a whole album.
Enjoyable enough, even though it's only four long jam tracks it meanders around in an interesting way that doesn't become too monotonous or droning.
I was a bit dismayed to see a 20 minute track, but this ended up being a quite pleasant sonicscape of noise.
Pleasant enough. Not something I'd go back to but it had enough variety to stay interesting.
very pleasant. was considering a 4 until I realized the album ended and it had moved on to playing similar hits from that period.
3.5 if I could, but is definitely more of a 4 than a 3. good music through and through but also sort of just "there".
Another where I wish I has .5 stars, 3.5 felt perfect. Wasn't sure on if it was going to tip to 3 or 4 but a day later and it's a 4. Good variety, good bass lines. Between the background crowd and the left channel / right channel switching, a lot of interesting little flourishes throughout.
it was fun, varied. wasn't sure what to expect but liked it.
It's nice to hear Otis covering some classics. His voice is just so darn good. I like Sittin' By the Dock of the Bay but I feel like that's all I ever hear.
While not exactly an *original* concept, the fact the title track here has been adopted by the Campbell clan at any and all gatherings with a DJ gives this album a minimum of 3 stars. I'd really like to give it a 3.5. The fact that the next day I can only remember the title track and the one that Gettin' Jiggy Wit It ripped off... err I mean sampled... means it falls to the 3 star side. Enjoyable listen though!
gah, another 3.5. It hops up to a 4 because it has that good 50s-ish oldies sound that I like even though it came out in 1964.
Ok, so I was down on this right from the start, mostly because of the last one. But I thought this one was far better and actually enjoyable! He still has that distinctive voice but it's understandable and comes across here as an interesting style compared to annoying in the older album. Nice variety of music, good storytelling. Solid 3. Which is actually a bit problematic as it seems I felt compelled to give the last one a 3. So now they're both a 3 even though this one is far better. I wish I could change the Heartattack and Vine rating to a 2 now.
Solid 4 and an easy listen. I appreciate how the entirety of the album works together as essentially one very long singular piece.
Really not much else to say I haven't already...
i'd definitely listen to this again. It has that very calm listenable sound Air is known for. I couldn't even tell it was technically a soundtrack other than the couple dialog moments.
wish I could give it a 4.5; the only thing that knocks it down to 4 is the repetitiveness *which* I know is kind of Kraftwerk's thing. I do like Computer World a bit better too.
Can't say I've ever heard of Gene Clark, but it was a pleasant enough early 70s sound.
Pleasant enough, though nothing really grabbed my attention.
hmm, wish I could give it a 3.5, but it's a 3 for me. The cultural significance is important and while I haven't looked at the global, I have a feeling that it's not a great global since it's rap. I almost want to give it a 4 for those meta reasons.
another example of my need for half ratings. I liked this better than 2Pac's yesterday, but not enough for a 4... Definitely like the more musical tone that parts of this has.
pleasant background music, with enough oddness to be interesting as well.
I was excited to see a 50s album, then a *little* less excited when I noticed it was jazz, but sure ok, I don't mind some jazz. Then the first song is the original(?) version of what I find to be one of David Lee Roth's most annoying songs/covers. Not Mr. Prima's fault, but a poor start. But then the next couple seem very gimmicky with too much call and response or cheesy dialog. Another half star nominee, I would love to give it a 2.5; let's see which direction that falls in the morning when it's time to assign stars...
A surprise 4 for me. I wasn't familiar with them but I definitely like. And that cover art is wonderful.
This was a pleasant enough 70s styled album. Of course it has a couple all star songs on here which definitely helped solidified this albums place on the list.
A pretty easy 4 to me. Still sounds fantastic today. I'm a little overdone on Search and Destroy but was happy that didn't seem to bring down my listen of the whole album.
I was unfamiliar with them tbh which is a shame. Going in I was very intrigued by the album art. This was great, definite 4 stars. I dig the music and everything, plus the lyrics are fantastic. And in a weird bit of timing, I saw an old concert lineup flyer for a club this morning and the very first band listed was this one. (others: Public Enemy, RATM, Redman, KMFDM, Pantera, No Doubt, FEAR)
It was, fine? Inoffensive but not particularly memorable.
I mean, it's fine. Not really my jam, but certainly not "bad" enough to get a 2. Sounded a bit too much like modern country.
3. it's fine, pleasant enough. ends on one of their big songs which gives it a bit of a nice send off.
i'm back on that half star thing. Definitely liked it and liked it more than a 3, but not quite enough to tip over to 4. More rock than the multitude of 70s and mild rock we've had lately which was a nice change.
3. Good energy to have on while working. I've kind of forgotten most of it here the next day, but I suppose there's nothing wrong with that.
i'd give it a 2.5 if I could. When considering all my other 3s, this doesn't fit there. If most of my 3s came on randomly I'd probably leave them on, but I'd most likely change the playlist if this one started. But I do recognize the musical ability is pretty good so I don't feel great about a 2. Especially because I'm not giving it a 2 just because "ew Coldplay", but it's just not my jam.
A quandary of needing to give two albums the same score even though I clearly like one more than the other. I liked it more than the previous Bragg album but not good enough for a 4 to show that preference in the ratings.
A solid 3. Similar to the last Common one, I enjoy the more musical and jazzy accompaniment. As usual, I'm listening while working so the lyrics don't get as much attention as they should but what I picked up was good.
Solid 3 as is and the the hits came on making it an easy call for a 4.
I have to go 2, I could justify a 2.5 even. the back half of the album almost saves it and pushes it to a 3 but I just can't vouch for the first half.
Hmm. I don't like this one as much as The Wall, but I don't feel good about going down to a 3. Iconic album art aside, I don't have that instant association with any of the tracks on this one. There are a couple rippin' guitar solos on this one though!
A run of the mill 3 for me. Not terribly memorable and kind of a weird in-between sound of the decades.
Pretty decent and chill. There were a couple tracks that caught my attention and made me start thinking 3.5 or even 4, but that was fleeting.
today I learned the name of the band that does There She Goes. I hope they at least got minorly wealthy off all of those 90s movies.
4 for sure, would do 4.5 if I could. A couple classic ones in here and just a good rambunctious sound all around.
3 i guess. not really my jam but it wasn't actively bad so I can't really give it a 2. Just not my style, vocals were a little "whiny" which might not be a fair description but is the first word that came to mind.
A solid 3. Agree it's good background music, peppy enough to get a good flow going.
I finally have a 3.5 that gets rounded up to a 4 rather than down the the 3. Some classic things in here absolutely. I did feel their "sound" kind of starts to all feel the same after awhile, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
I was excited at the opening guitar riff, but then it got very weird. Wasn't really a fan of the silly vocals at first. Buuut then it won me over with some clever lyrics. 3 it is!
super good, a solid 4. This could come out today and it would be great.
A good compliment to Elastica the day before. Solid 4, another example of the best kind of 90s.
decent. I went in expecting a 4 but the ones outside the couple bits hits were just kinda there for me. Still enjoyable though.
Super good. The energy from the live show comes through really well too.
2.5? I really am trying to separate the music from what an asshat he is. But even then, the schtick was getting old towards the end.
3. it's fine for what it is, not particularly stellar but not bad. Tbh I expected to recognize more of the tracks considering his incredible list of hits.
4.5 if I could. Obviously the couple big hits but the rest is just as good.
3.5 if I could. But after a second listen it tips over to a 4.
It's fine. Nothing I really want to listen to a whole hour of but it's good at least.
3.25 because it was recorded in SF. It's fine, a couple classic rock hits but nothing in my particular slice of rock.
I'm just not digging this but I can't place why. 2.5 if I could, but I guess it gets a 2 because I can't really say I liked it for a 3.
it's decent! yea not as brutal as the Nico solo album. She's used sparingly here and somehow her voice sounds alright. The rest is fine, though I still stand by the fact most of the popularity is due to the Warhol clique connection.
3, it was fine. To be honest I don't remember a thing about it a couple days later though...
3, it's fine. Tiny Dancer sets a high bar that the rest doesn't really reach.
this is an odd one, but I like it. Going from weird accordion sounds to industrial every other track...
3 I guess. I'd consider a 2.5, but I can't bump it down to a 2. "If It's in You" almost broke me, what a long 2 minutes.
a rounded up 3.5 (I'd say 3.75 but I'm not about to get into .25s). super grungy which I of course like.
solid 3, this was a fun listen. Nice to hear something from him other than the big video hit.
3, it's fine for background music. Pronouncing Bowie as "Booie" in Destroy Rock & Roll annoyed me.
3. Good quality Aerosmith when it was still more raw rock n roll.
It's fine, a 3. Felt a little like what I consider to be generic pop music, which is likely not fair but what can I say.
3.5.... but I think it's the first one in awhile to tip upwards on the scale. I just don't feel good about only a 3. It has that funky vocal style that's not too grating or in your face, good tunes behind it, really good album.
Perhaps a little generous, but this is getting a 3.5 rounded up. No massive stand out hits but the overall sound is fantastic classic rock without the cheesiness or overplayed aspect of some of the other bands of the time.
Interesting contrast to listen to this right after Jeff Beck. Where that one felt more like just good raw rock n roll, this one seemed more "look how 60s were are". I dunno if that makes sense.
I'm going to say 3 on this. I wanted it to be higher and it's great background working music, but not quite to a 4.
It's fine, I'm not really the audience. I debated 2.5 or 3, but settled on 3. It does have some good funky music and beats I liked.
4, not my favorite Priest album but damn good.
I went in expecting a 4 but 3 i guess? 3.5 in reality but I'm not feeling the bump up to 4.
Gosh I'm usually kind of over Johnny Cash's main music, it's good but it's fawned over so much and if I don't hear Ring of Fire ever again I wouldn't be upset. But listening to this, gosh dang is it good. Gosh.
The one shifted around a lot while listening to it but I ended up on a 4. It got unusual enough while still staying within the realm of dang good.
Solid 4. Just non-stop good metal without it getting overbearing or overstaying its welcome. Multiple classic tracks too. It's the first in awhile that made me at least consider if it gets a 5.
3, it was pretty good! I wasn't familiar with them before this.
Pretty good. I appreciate them getting right to the point and doing a tight 6 song album.
2.5 bumped to a 3 because I did enjoy quite a bit of the instrumentation.
3.5, but I'm not sure yet which way it's going to fall. Pros: the energy is just fantastic. I can't think of many other albums or artists that have the raw energy Little Richard does. Cons: the classic Little Richard screams and WHOOOs got to be a bit much when they're in every song multiple times. I know that's blasphemy and that's just his style, but it made me start to think of that as a gimmick. Ok, the energy tips it to a 4.
3. classic group and enjoyed listening, but rating any higher would have been due to the name value, not the actual album. Enjoyable enough!
Easy 4. I thought there would be more of the classic hits on here since it's one of the classic album art examples, but still good.
easy 4. probably a 4.5 but I can't get it to a 5 with how monotonous the vocals are (blasphemy, I know).
4, probably another 4.5. Kind of similar, I find the vocals to get grating after awhile. But there's undoubtedly some incredible tracks on here. what a back to back combo with the Ramones, eh?
4.5, rounded down unfortunately. It's a wonderful album, but when I compare it to other Bowie albums there are other ones I like more. So I have to save the 5 for those...
3. it's pretty good, very pleasant. That said on Monday I don't remember it...
this was pretty good! just enough world music content to be interesting with some very good singing.
Pretty good blues actually, I enjoyed! Very easy listen.
this is the sound I think of when looking for classic rock. Quite good, 3.5 for sure.
3. good songwriting as usual, though the trademark Springsteen voice gets a little much when listening to an entire album.
3.5 if I could. Never really listened to Lenny Kravitz beyond the singles but this was really good.
3, it's fine. Killer bass lines by the horse though.
3.5 for sure. 4? yes 4. I like this era of 50s sound merging into the 60s sound.
gah, another 3.5. I'm not sure about leaning to a 4, but in comparison to some recent 3s I definitely like this more. I suppose these numeric ratings are always in a bit of flux and bound to be awarded within the context of what's been listened to recently.
I started at a 3 but it continued slipping down to a 2. I found myself waiting for it to be over numerous times. I'm not a fan of his vocal style; apparently I can deal with it when hearing a track come on randomly, but over and over on an album... yea no. Scar Tissue is pretty good though.
3 I suppose. Definitely enjoyed but not sure I'd seek it out again. Their logo is an all time best too.
Another tough one. I wasn't familiar with and really liked it, so definitely 3.5. As I sit here the next day, I DO actually want to listen to it again, so it's getting a 4. An interesting sound overall, I'm not even quite sure how to describe it. Indie rock I guess, but it doesn't have that worn out generic indie rock sound? It had a touch of weirdness to it. I dunno, pretty good though.
I definitely like this. It felt more energetic and and varied than other funk I frequently come across. another one where context and recent albums come into play. It's a 3.5 for me, but when I compare it to the Parliament from the other day, I liked this a fair bit more. I think I'll bump it to a 4 because of that.
So Beck is one of those that I never really "got". Sure there was a good single or two but it seems like his music is held in such high regard. I gotta say, this was pretty darn good. Decent variety, not relying on a gimmick or an overused signature sound. 3.5, I can't quite give it a 4 though.
I'd say a 3. enjoyable listen even though it's a style I can usually go either way on.
3.5 for sure but which way to go... I really like this style of "oldies" for lack of a better term. And the energy in the live performance make it a lot of fun.
4.5 for sure. So many good tracks on here and pretty much the quintessential grunge sound.
3, it's fine. Here I am the next day having trouble remembering it though...
Definitely enjoyed this. I liked the first track so much I thought this might make it to a 4, but alas the rest of the album wasn't as memorable.
Hard to give this any lower than a 4. It would be a straight 4 compared to Alice in Chains as a 4.5. Hugely important grunge milestone, though (while unfair to it) was so overplayed that I can't help but be a little numb to it.
begrudgingly a 4. Ugh, Morrisey, but it's a good Smiths album.
I'll say a 3. It's pleasant enough, though a bit dull. Nothing I plan to revisit but it's not bad.
4 definitely. A pioneer of industrial and a great album. TV II is a bit grating but the rest is so good.
Hmm, 3.5. The Buzzcocks have a very good sound but I have to say nothing on this particular album is quite memorable to me.
Good ol' classic rock and roll. Deserves a 3.5 but I can't quite get it to a 4.
This was a pretty good listen. I suppose it's a testament to Bob Marley but this didn't grate on me like a lot of reggae does after the 3rd or so track. It deserves a 3.5.
This was pretty good! Great vocals and had a flow that worked well as music while working.
3.5. I wasn't too thrilled, unfairly, because I just thought of Let's Get It On and wasn't looking forward to a whole album of that. But who woulda thought, it's not all that! Nice to hear his legendary voice singing some new-to-me things.
3. it's Bjork, you know what you're getting when you go into it and this certainly delivered on Bjork. Pleasant to listen to if a bit odd at times.
3. decent atmospheric music though it went on longer than I would have liked.
I sometimes roll my eyes at R.E.M., not so much that they're bad just that I never really saw the greatness so many others talk about. This was a pleasant enough listen, even the big hit that was played on repeat on the radio back in the day
eh. 2.5. it's new wavy so I thought I'd like it but there was just something off for me, maybe the vocals.
I certainly didn't dislike it but I can't do more than a 3 since I don't really remember it. Definitely on the list for a re-listen though since you said you enjoyed it so much Bob.
i worry album art is more of an afterthought these days. maybe not to the artists but more so for listeners. it's such an important part of the experience. In this case, for me, a negative one. I don't know why but I hate this album art and it's legit having a negative effect on listening to the album.
Well, it's fine. One track that was jusssst hippie style instrumental was getting on my nerves, but tracks with vocals were fine.
3, pleasant enough instrumental.
I'm not much of a U2 fan but I can't deny it's quite good from a musical standpoint.
3. It's Frank, legendary voice. Though an entire album of his songs back to back is like ordering an entire dozen of donuts and then realizing this is way too much of a good thing all at once.
I mean, 5 for sure. Really good album punctuated by the fact it was his last.
3, it's fine. Not my jam normally but an enjoyable dip into an unfamiliar style.
5 and beyond. I'm pretty much over Personal Jesus but there are so many hits on this one. Super super good.
it was decent! As it started I wasn't really into it but it grew on me.
solid 4.5. Her albums are so good, great sound peppered with theming you don't tend to find in non-electronic music.
3.5. This one was a bit tough for me to decide which side of the fence to fall on. The music is so so good. The skits are distracting though and had me reaching for the next track button each time. I recognize those probably mean more to other people so I don't begrudge their inclusion but it does knock it down from a true 4 to a 3.5 for me personally. It breaks up the flow of great music.
3.5, this was pretty good. I was expecting it to fall a bit more on the hip hop side than the pure 80s vibe it had. Very very tempted to bump to a 4, but would I seek it out to listen again, eh probably not though that's not meant as a slight on the album
4.5. fantastic fantastic hip hop. The length is perfect too. I thought I'd be annoyed at Walk This Way since it's so so popular and played so much, but nope. It stays just as good as it's always been.
3, it's fine. I was pretty into it at first but it kind of drug on. I definitely do like this era of music, but I'm finding I need variety to really enjoy it. An entire album from the same band gets to be a bit much of the same sound over and over, I need the variety of different bands from the era. What a baller move though to put your biggest hit as the LAST track on the album, eh?
3. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of backing music and beats, made it an enjoyable listen. The first track had almost an industrial synth backing which grabbed my attention.
3. It's quite fine musically, like usual I didn't catch many of the lyrics but they seemed what you'd expect from Ryan Adams. Fine for a few songs but then just blends together since it's not really my jam.
3, it was decent. Never heard of them and didn't know what to expect based on the album art. A pleasant listen, though not one I'd probably seek out.
3 I guess, but two hours of this is too much. I'll listen to disc two some other time.
3.5 for sure. Great sound, energetic, bit of nostalgia.
3, it was fine. Kind of unmemorable? Like, not bad, but I don't think it caught my attention any while playing except for That's Entertainment.
5 all the way. It gets a little odd at the end, but I'm totally fine with that. Knock out some rock hits first and then have some fun with it. Obviously it's covered a lot but check out Motorhead's cover of Heroes, it's so good
3. decent enough, really good at first. I started noticing and getting a little worn out by his style of more talking than singing. That's personal preference I suppose but gets a little much after awhile.
3.5, some good ol' country-ish music. The first track was a little more "zany" than I expected, then settled into the more outlaw country sound.
2. This was apparently before they got popular and dare I say good? Way too floating and experimental to me.
3, pretty decent. I know his strength is in his lyrics so I'm sure I didn't get the full effect of that since I'm listening while working.
pretty good. haven't heard of them before but quite pleasant!
Hey pretty good. Got a little weird towards the end but it's Brian Eno. I was a bit surprised the first half of the album WASN'T as weird as I was expecting.
Yea, it's pretty darn good isn't it? Keeps good energy going, big hits spaced throughout. A classic!
I dig this. Heaven 17 is a band I never recognize the name for somehow but of course know their hits. I'll tell ya, that album art is somethin' else and I wasn't sure what to expect just from that.
Another solid album by TV On the Radio. Definitely never were on my radar until the previous album from them that was on the list. Still not quite to the level where I think I'd search and seek them out to listen to, but firmly in the camp of enjoying when I come across them.
pretty good, pleasant background music!
I liked this quite a bit! The backing track / beats / music is quite good and varied enough to keep the album interesting.
Pretty decent. American Pie is such a classic and almost overwhelming that even after just listening to this album yesterday I can't really recall much beyond that one.
nice to hear some of the earlier Iggy that is a little more weird and mellow than more straight up rock/punk.
my god this album art is just fantastic. i'm starting this rating at 4 stars just because of that, let's see if the music keeps it there. Yea it was pretty good all around, I'm keeping it at 4!
it's a 4 I suppose. I'm not trying to be edgy by not giving it a 5, it's just ok to me. It starts off super strong and then gets a bit forgettable. And personally I've always found that Number 9 track extremely annoying.
Quick notes as I catch up: super good, way easy to listen to.
pretty good. not as weird as a expected, nor as pure 90s as I expected. A nice mix of the two. 3.5
4 for sure. Love their floaty grunge sound. And this album doesn't even have their big hit on on.
4, this was so good! I feel like I only think of What's Love Got to Do With It is all I think of with her but this album rocked.
4, dang good. the non-hits are excellent too without overstaying their welcome.
3. very pleasant, though nothing i'd go back to in the future I don't believe.
3, very listenable. I hadn't heard of them by band name but then of course recognized a couple of the songs.
5, I mean come on. There haven't been many other bands that can take music that's pretty heavy and loud, turning it into a beautiful acoustic set. Perfect flow with a couple excellent cover choices throughout. Flawless.
Quite enjoyable. I know who he is of course but I didn't recognize the bit hit on this album. Not bad though.
to be honest, not what I thought Belle & Sebastian sounded like. It was harmless, if a bit boring and plain.
Multiple 10+ min songs (one that's 18!) typically means overstaying its welcome, and "yes" it happened here too. Was fine at first but I was ready for it to be done.
4? Maybe a 3.5, but I'm going to err on the side of 4 since it's the Stones and all. i feel like I disregard the Stones a lot as I'm sick of their biggest hits. I forget about their earlier ones that have that old raw rock n roll sound like this one.
I mean, it was fine. I don't really remember it here on the next day.
3, 3.5. It was quite pleasant and I hadn't heard of them before.
4. Classic lyricist/poet with a great time-worn voice.
Not that I'm a huge Bee Gees fan, but I'm a bit taken aback by how bad this is. The vocals on some of these songs gave me flashbacks to Nico.
This was pleasant enough. I thought it would be a little over the top but it was more chill than expected.
3. You know, I went into this expecting to be annoyed. I know, I like ska, I should like The Specials. But turns out I don't like older pure ska that's much more reggae based and tend to roll my eyes when the Specials come on. But you know what, once we got the way overplayed Message to You Rudy out of the way, I enjoyed the rest!
3. pleasant background ambient music. Not as good as what I'd usually put on, but still good.
who names their band this? Yea this sucks. I mean I appreciate weirdness but it's not good.
3. pretty good! I did skip through the skits and speeches though.
3 i guess. not my jam and I did seriously consider a 2, but her vocal skills kept it at a 3.
4 I suppose. it is pretty darn good and creative, even if a lot of the lyrics are a bit cringe at this point.
I'm not a massive Beatles fan but this is one of their better albums in my opinion.
2. i guess I'm supposed to like them, they're zany and whatnot. But I find them just annoying.
4.5, I want to give it a 5 but it's just not quite there
3 i guess, it was meh but I can't say it was bad.
3, not familiar with, enjoyed it!
3 i guess. voice and music is great but I'm just stuck on the big hit being about not going to rehab and then, well...
3 I suppose. He's very talented but I was getting a little tired of his sound by the end of it.
1.5 if I could. Seriously considered a 1.
