Gentlemen

I don't know this band. I really like the 90s alt-rock sound, love the use of the minor keys, some of the strong bass riffs remind me of the post punk and hardcore and math rock I listened to growing up (eg Estel, Fugazi) and the guitar sounds a bit like Interpol mixed with Mudhoney mixed with Placebo. Expansive. I really dislike the vocals, the singer's voice, its just so American, like if Chris Cornell or Layne Staley couldn't sing. Prefer it when heavily distorted, but the verses are kinda whiney. Reading the wiki blurb, I must say the idea of the album exploring "the dark psyche of the '90s male" is massive eye-roll, sounds very emo, self indulgent, those poor 90s males. Chorus melody of "Be Sweet" is really beautiful. Intro riff to "Debonair" reminds me of the Clash. And the guitar riffs of Warpaint. The singing in "When we two parted" is dire, so out of tune. Ditto for "I keep coming back". Like fully out of tune. I actually found phrases in almost all the songs that I loved, but equally did not find a song where I loved all of it. Its a shame, as I think if this was instrumental or a different singer it could be a 4/5 for me. But the singer drags it down a 3, and that feels generous. Second half of the album got quite same-y, much lower quality than the tracks at the top.

Really liked the first half of the album, the latter half wasn't as good.

I've never heard of this band, though it's a genre I really like, and I have to say I enjoyed it a lot. Will definitely listened to this again. My only real complaint is than none of the songs on their own really stood out to me.

This is a little too aggressive, 90s for me. Sounds like music for guys who yell at their girlfriends in public. Yeah. I hate this.

Was musikalisch so schön datiert aber auch abwechslungsreich, gut produziert, stimmungsvoll festgeschraubt wurde, das wird dann mit diesem männlichen Katzenjammer wieder aus der Fassung gehauen. Hab ich mich über diesen einen von einer weiblichen Stimme begleiteten Song gefreut! Trotz allem 2.6

It was such a slog to get through this album. All the songs sound the same; the vocals are extremely off-putting, not to mention how plainly "dark" the lyrics are. Although most of the time the backing track felt like they were just going for the generic gloomy theme, there were certain times the instruments felt like they came together in harmony. Favorite track: Brother Woodrow

This is the soundtrack to a middle school breakup, and I mean that in the worst way possible. I don't mean to slam dunk on so many of these albums, but, Christ, there are so many of these that don't deserve to be anywhere near the discussion of this list. I hate the cringey, half-deep lyrics that are half-sung mixed with an instrumentation that sounds like complete dogshit. This album is incredibly pretentious with absolutely no reason to be. I am not a huge fan of grunge or 90's alternative, but I do enjoy a good Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, MBV, and even Hole. I get the whole meaning of a toxic relationship cycle that this album goes through, but if I want to listen about the ins and outs of love gone bad, I will listen to Rumours or Souvlaki or something like that.

Very solid album. His voice is pretty grating but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Enjoyed the switch-up to the female lead singer as well. Might need to start doing a favorite bar for these albums - "You think I'm scared of girls/Well maybe/But I'm not afraid of you" is pretty fire Saved: Debonair*, What Jail Is Like

I was giving this a pass, because this is how this type of music sounded in the 90s. And then I got to 'Be Sweet' - the lyrics had me cracking up. It’s a break up album that I didn’t feel.

Don’t know what to make of this. It was listenable, angry sounding in places.2/3* ?

Rockigt och mörkt, hemska texter om en destruktiv relation. Efter närmare efterforskning ser jag att albumet är en brytpunkt för bandet, då de tog sig från ett mer rockigare grunge-sound till att inkorporera mer soul- och R&B-influenser. I albumet har de hittat en bra balans mellan den högljudda grungen och något mer melodiöst. Ett solitt och bra album, som kanske tyvärr saknar någon riktig "wow"-faktor. Debonair, Now You Know och Fountain and Fairfax höjdpunkter av de mer rockiga spåren. Av de lugnare och balladigare sticker When We Two Parted och My Curse ut. Bästa låt: When We Two Parted, kanske.

Some good guitar moments, but the vocals drone on too much for me. I wanted to like this record, but never felt the spark. The riffs on Fountain and Fairfax are decent.

Raw and emotional. Lyrically repugnant. Don’t love the vocals but subjectively appropriate for the style/message. I don’t like it, but I COULD under the right circumstances. Going middle of the road rating, but can’t fault the whole package.

not bad. Not super my style but has gotten a few replays and will probably continue to do so.

Kinda boring 90s alternative

Bright, airy, punk rock guitar over jam band drums. Like RHCP, Incubus, and Blink-182 had a baby.

This band has always floated around the periphery of the music I listen to. Oft recommended but seldom listened to. What turned me off in previous listens was the lyrical directness. I always felt like the music begged for something more abstract and circuitous. This listen was quite enveloping though. Something finally clicked.

Not a fan of the lead singer AT ALL. Not for me.

Vocals are easily the weakest part, cool guitar riffs Debonair, Fountain and Fairfax are my favorites

No complaints, some I liked more than others.

Eh. This one didn't do anything for me. Just fast and slow versions of the same song. Pretty indistinguishable and forgettable. I liked the last track, which was an instrumental though.

3. Good energy to have on while working. I've kind of forgotten most of it here the next day, but I suppose there's nothing wrong with that.

How have I gone all these years without this band in my life

I remember hearing their name, probably heard some of their music on "alternative radio" (I listened to WFNX in Boston and college stations in the mid-and-late-80s), but I don't know for sure. I can see why they are grouped with the early-90s grunge movement. It's a bit screamy for my tastes, which I know is often a trademark of the grunge era (scream at least part of the song, usually the chorus after a quieter verse or two), and the guitars get real thrashy (nothing wrong with it, and I admire the skill it takes to play that in time, just doesn't appeal to me except in small doses).

fine. Appropriately angsty, but to me doesn't reach a Pearl Jam or Nirvana level of the time.

Vocalist is giving me strong Nine Inch Nails vibes. Slow start too, this could be a nicely paced album.... Second song has a lot of energy behind it, just wish this albums mixing was better for a 'remastering' Lyrics to 'Be Sweet' got a chuckle out of me. This is a decent example of good songs without autotune in my opinion. Debonair has a nice little funky jive. Songs vocals show emotion, but they're not the nicest to listen to. But the instrumentals are soothing alongside them. Its not the most calming listen, but the lyrics and word play seem to carry the most. Secondly followed by the instrumentals, but the vocalists emotion gets the better of him on almost every song. I'd give this 3 stars.

The Afghan Whigs continue to explore the darker side of Rock as they oscillate from moody to a touch of angst. This album has a broad appeal, but no major single or remembrance.

Didn't really like it at the beginning. Seemed ok, but just too garage-y. Low quality protection, mostly uninteresting songwriting. Things turned around later on in the album when it got more interesting. In particular, the last two songs and then the final instrumental track were really good. So a 2 for most of the album but then a 4 for the last three tracks.

Some pretty good tunes, good lyrics. But some shit too. Kinda rock with distorted guitars. Last song instrumental almost a bit Radiohead-ey. 3/5

Good alt rock but HORRENDOUS vocal melodies

Really enjoyed this, lacked standout tracks perhaps but they’ve a good sound and an interesting style and lyrics.

The dongy doodies on this song are enrapturing.

A nice wee surprise of an album. Might not revisit but definitely enjoyable.

Lukewarm alt rock that never really grabbed me. First time hearing this band it's not a great first impression. Vocalist is probably the weakest point here, but the production is too clean so it always sounded like the band was pulling their punches. Coulda been way better, there's potential.

Aika semi, osassa biiseistä vokalistilla oli yllättävän paljon epätasaisuutta. Välillä oli hyvää settiä, toisinaan jäi sitten vähän valjuksi. Skarppaisi, mokoma! Jossain biisissä (vai biiseissä?) ollut nainen oli tasaisempi, mutta miehen äänestä pidin ns. hyvissä kohdissa enemmän. Annan tälle peruskolmosen, taustalla meni ärsyttämättä, mutta ei myöskään aiheuttanut suurempia intohimoja.

Ei sytyttänyt. Oli sellainen fiilis, että haluaisin tykätä tästä ja että kohta tää lähtee lentoon, mutta sitä ei vaan koskaan tapahtanut. Nostatukset päättyi toistuvasti mahalaskuun.

This isn’t really my style but it definitely had a lot of strong moments, in terms of both music and themes. There were moments that felt really self-indulgent , but overall it’s decent. 7/10

Instrumentation was kind of nice, but mostly just kind of boring and never did anything that interesting. Vocals were really grating to me.

3.0 - A killer backing band with explosive drums and great guitar work. Non-chord based and almost absent of melody, which actually helps create some expansive soundscapes. But, sweet Lord do I find that lead singer grating! He sings with joyless, grunty disgust and the lyrics just make him seem like a dumb douchebag. Some of the writing seems lazy, leaning on unneeded swearing, which comes off as pretentious. The only standouts are "Curse Me", which has a female vocalist. Absolute gem. And the last instrumental track (again without the lead vocalist) is great.

Consistent quality throughout, though it’s mostly just moody alternative rock. I think if I cared more about the lyrics or if there were more musical highs I would like this album better. 7

Me gustó mucho, creo que cumple con su cometido de corazón roto rockero. A ratos suena oscuro, a ratos suena enérgico, pero como que la sensación de tristeza se mantiene constante. Todo suena bien y sigue esa misma línea. Disfruté sobre todo "Gentlemen", "Be Sweet", "When We Two Parted" y "Now You Know". 10/10

Very 90’s sounding which I love. Took me right back to that era. I found the album to be simple but interesting yet effective. Not too terribly musically diverse but pleasant to listen to.

Really, really not a fan of this guy’s voice. The other elements don’t elevate the material beyond my distaste for the vocalist, either. 2/5 at best.

This album was fine. It was definitely characteristic of 90's rock.

Radiohead with all of the pretension but none of the talent. Shitty lyrics, tacky song names, Dad Rock at its most uninteresting.

I listened to the Afghan Whigs full records as a part of another list I’m taking on and I think this one is the best. Mixture of soul, R&B, post punk and alternative rock to make an interesting genre all their own. Favorite song: Debonair Least favorite song: Fountain and Fairfax

Bändin nimi oli tuttu jonkinlaisena indierockin edelläkävijänä mutta musiikki oli ihan vierasta. Jotenkin tämä oli jäänyt täysin paitsioon vaikka saman aikakauden ja genren bändejä olen fanittanut. Tykkäsin todella kovasti ja tätä tulee varmasti kuunneltua tulevaisuudessakin.

Didn't know what to expect but damn, I really liked this album. Good rock, good lyrics, and just overall a good album. Could get into my feels with this one but also just say fuck it to the world at the same time typa vibe.
