"Let Me Put My Love Into You" is a Spinal Tap song if I’ve ever heard one.

In high school I got The Best of CCR from the Columbia House Record Club, and the thing was an eye-opener. Just banger after banger. And there's like, what, only two tracks from Cosmo's Factory that didn't make their "best of" cut?

Elton, you gotta tighten this thing up. Some real all-timers on this album, but have you considered cutting some of the chaff…. Like, say, Jamaica Jerk-Off, just as an example?

The Doors are simply not for me.

Fight the Power a 5-star song, despite my overall rating.

Sounds so Jack White-y it’s like he’s recording his own Weird Al parodies of himself.

Halfway through the first track I knew this was an album I’d return to again and again.

Beyond Belief is probably my favourite Elvis song, so how can I give this album anything but top marks.

I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam I Am.

I somehow never listened to this band in high school, despite being the right age, and this sort of aligning with my tastes. In another universe I could see myself really getting into this, but now, many years later I’m just not interested in what it’s offering.

Seems ex(x)cessive to have two albums by The xx on this list.

Fun and noisy, gotta love it. People complaining about the number of covers or the loud screaming: congratulations, you’ve discovered the point of this music existing!

Think about these first three tracks and how effortlessly he moves from devastating satire in “Sail Away” to the tongue-in-cheek self-effacing “Lonely at the Top” right into the completely earnest and beautiful “He Gives Us All His Love”. Who else can do that?! Also, it’s simply incredible how many people sign up for this project and seem to absolutely hate listening to and thinking about music in any truly open-minded way. Your lazily dismissive, knee-jerk, sophomoric, incurious one-star takes on half these albums are an embarrassment, you philistine babies!

The phrase “This one’s for Yosemite Sam” sung over the sounds of a woman orgasming? This is the work of a true artist and visionary.

One of my favorite albums ever from one of my favorite voices ever. Just incredible in every way. I’ve listened it to it so many times. For the purposes of this project, today I chose to listen to the alternative/original Gurf Morlix mix. Lucinda rejected the recording/mix in favor of the rougher, slightly grungier version that became the final album after essentially replacing Morlix with Steve Earle, but this initial version is worth checking out if you’re curious to hear these songs presented in a cleaner, more straight-forward presentation, especially in the context of how they then evolved into the masterpiece that it became.

I would be remiss if I didn’t commemorate this album by posting about the Weird Al–inspired parody I wrote in high school. Trout, trout, swimming about Fish in the water going in and out Come on! I’m angling for you. Come on!

Recognized the first track from the Yo La Tengo cover and was surprised I never heard this original or anything from this album before. Instantly added this to my library. Really great. Speaking of which, no Yo La Tengo on this list???

Incredible how many people on this site have little baby brains that break so easily when a “supposedly great” album has… GASP!… cover songs. “And this one is the title of the album? But! But! That’s not fair! I’m an emotionally stunted manchild that doesn’t know how to critically engage with music and its history!” Anyway, enough about you. Great janglepop here from Da Boys, at the crossroads of folk, rock, country, and pop. And without the Byrd we’d have surely have no R.E.M. so that’s a 5 stars from me.

Love this album. Is there a smoother voice in all of music? Especially one signing about shooting people?

Not my thing, but I can appreciate it for what it is. Actually glad I stuck with it to the end, since I recognized Beth Orton’s voice immediately.

The guy’s a complete twat, so it pains me to report that this is still a pretty great album.

Aggressively forgettable

I remember once reading someone’s assessment that the worst rock and roll songs are the ones with “rock and roll” in the title, and I now believe that goes double for “indie rock and roll”.

Not even the biggest Who fan, but this was great.

Being mostly metal-illiterate, was surprised how much I found this more enjoyable than not. Guess all this time I’d been judging Iron Maiden by its album art.
