Babylon Sail Away
Kedeligt. Meget meget skippable.
Utter nonsense - worked in a record shop when this came out and heard it on heavy rotation - still have PTSD listening to it
The hell is this. There are like 500,000 albums like this on Spotify that are by artists who have <1000 monthly listeners. And some of those are better, they’re more interesting at least. This shouldn’t be on this list it’s really fucking lame.
the white sauce of music
Bailed after three songs. Just not my thing.
Of all the albums ever released across the globe this one does not come close to ranking in the top 1,001.
This is the perfect album for when you're having love sickness. Because this album is so fucking boring and bad you forget about it in a minute and come to the point that it's just not worth it listening to stuff like that.
Another nice 1990s album of nice music for nice people who can only bear to listen to nice things. Male Dido. OK 'Sail Away' is a good, the rest is wishy-washy and forgettable... I was happy to have forgotten this.
I didn’t think I was familiar with this artist until I started listening to the album and heard the song “Babylon.”It’s one of those songs I’ve heard for many years in the background of just about everywhere and everything, but disliked so much that I’ve always shut it out and never pursued finding out who it was. Lots of droning singer/songwriter stuff that, I believe, fails. For me, this type of music has to have melodies, lyrics, vocals, instrumentation, SOMETHING that draws me in and plays on or to my emotions. Nothing. Not even his cover of Soft Cell’s “Say Hello, Wave Goodbye” could even impress me, though it’s the best song on the album, because… it’s Soft Cell! But without Marc Almond’s deadpan, torch-song delivery, it falls flat. This album spent three years on the British charts. Must have been a fallow three years in music over there.
No.
sooo boring. there’s nothing interesting about this album, the drum machines are bad, and i don’t like his voice (or anything about his music really). and to top it all off the last song is nine minutes. nine painful minutes.
This bored me so much, it feels like so much of late 90's early 00's pop ballad music and it doesn't stand out within that group of music.
Man, I went into this with an open heart but this is mediocrity and blandness sonified. Every song is very similar - musically, the sequenced drums are completely uninspired and flat, the guitar loops around and Gray's voice, his only redeeming feature here (he can, at least, sing), whine's on. This is tedious. Having read about the original failed launch and then meteoric second launch of this album I am stunned at how this was so succesful. Maybe I can understand it gaining a little success given how inoffensive it is, but to be in the top 100 albums for multiple years, the 5(?) selling album etc is absurd. Wow, mega-bland.
boring shit NNN
Not into it. His voice grates on me
The second it started I couldn't wait for it to end
I didn't like David Gray when the Babylon single was being pumped out every 20 minutes and I don't like him now. It's the kind of music you expect to hear sitting in a Starbucks.
Not good at all - why is it on this list? Just nothing to it. The singing/lyrics are weak. The chord progressions are basic. No value what so ever. 0 stars if I could.
How anyone chooses to listen to this is incomprehensible.
I was hoping for something good this morning after a rare heavy night of mid-week drinking. But no, the music gods decided I deserved this drek instead. This is music that firmly falls into the "the world would be a better place if this didn't exist" category. I can't rate it less than 1, but I would rate it negatively if I could. Just awful, affected, bland, over-produced shite. This is the music that made me cringe at the time it came out, when you literally couldn't avoid this dross as it was everywhere. After twenty years it actually manages to sound even worse. Appalling! I promised that I would listen to each album from start to finish, but this one was difficult. Just fake music for fake people. I can't quite decide which part of this is worst, the horrible false vocal performance, the dreadful computer synth noises, the nasty harmonies, the dull and repetitive lyrics, or the relentlessly slow and drudging pace. This was audio torture. David Gray manages to sound like a goat bleating in pain at times, sometimes a failed Bob Dylan impressionist, then at other times he sounds like a talentless busker/ pub singer who has had one too many drinks. This is a vile abomination of a record and I'm going to need to listen to a lot of proper music when this is done to cleanse my soul. God he butchered "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" - that must surely be a crime against humanity? If someone gave me a gun with one bullet, a time machine, and told me to "save humankind", then I would be sorely tempted to visit David Gray at the moment of his birth. Sorry, but anyone who likes this music must have something wrong with their hearing. I can understand different people have different tastes, but this is beyond bad music.
There was a time when this sort of bland music was popular - blame the search for the next Coldplay. But nowadays, many years later, it doesnt wash at all. dull.
Žádný experiment, žádné riziko, sakra ani žádná emoce v tom není slyšet a přitom texty napovídají, že by mohlo jít o docela fajn melancholický počin.
This was the beginning of modern pop, bollox meoldies, weary lyrics gentle sounds. It's like sitting on the toilet after a heavy night and too much curry it makes you cry and hurts in such a tender place and is just awful
Dismal, left me feeling that I've just wasted an hour of my life. Doesn't even work as background music, kept intruding into my consciousness by annoying.me.This is very, very far from being music that I like.
Are we definite that AI was not around when this was released?
Apparently "noteworthy" because he supported Dave Matthews Band and had good album sales in the US, (which always seems to surprise the UK press). What's the album like? Yawnville! 🥱
not my type
I get that this album had a bunch of hits, but that doesn't automatically make something this boring and bland warrant a spot on the list of albums I NEED to listen to imo. Well, to each their own I suppose
That voice, that repetitive background music….No.
If negative stars were an option this would be a -2. I actually hated this album and I’m not sure why I forced myself to listen past the first song, I guess some innocent part of me thought it would turn, but that has now been robbed from me. In summary this album was as dull and melancholy as unseasoned oatmeal and reminds me of the color grey, uninspired and lacking anything mildly appealing
Hey kids let's make an album that sounds like Phil Collins B-sides.
My GOD this was boring. I think I'd rather listen to that Kid Rock record again than this sappy garbage.
Bästa låt: Please Forgive Me.
Garbage
If Sour Cream could make music, this would be it. This was the blandest thing I've heard in this journey so far. At one point while listening to the album I said to myself "this whole album sounds like something that would play at the end of a bad Scrubs episode" and I googled "David Gray Scrubs" out of curiosity and turns out "Please Forgive Me" DID play on Scrubs. Glad this one's over.
didn't like
Hmmm, what is this and who is this? Who is David Gray and why is he saying these things? I have to admit I'd only heard We're Not Right before as it popped up on one of those brilliant Q Magazine Best Tracks Of cd's, and I didn't give it much thought then and having just listened to the album I've probably dedicated far too much of my mortal coil allotment on this stuff. It's like the male companion piece to Lisa Stansfield, seriously it's for people who send food back in cafes. And yet....a quick glance on Spotify shows millions of hits, good to know I'm completely out of step with the bourgeois zeitgeist. I know I'm sounding very smug and self satisfied, but I think it was Balzac who put it best when he said "this sucks"..
Apart from Babylon, the material on this album was unfamiliar to me. Now I have to try to erase it from my memory. Very forgettable, I hope.
Oh my god, I am dying of boredom. Even attempting to describe the boredom is deadly dull. I did actually listen to this all the way through, but I cannot express how much I hated this pre-masticated pablum. Deathly, deathly, boring. His name is boring. The album cover is boring. His voice could bore for England. Apparently, Mr Gray believes (and I have no reason to doubt him) that the success (175 weeks on the UK charts!) paved the way for "soul-baring" artist such as James Blunt, Ed Sheeran and others. As if I need any more reason to despise this record, and yet here it is. It is neither hot nor cold, and I shall spit it out of my mouth.
literally one of the most boring albums i have ever listened to
The definition of mediocrity. And yet somehow, mediocrity, served just the right way, often manages to become wildly popular. I'm not gonna compare this to a McDonald's burger, because I don't think it's analogous. A McDonald's burger might not be a culinary masterpiece, but I can at least basically remember what it tastes like - even years later. No, this album is like a Wendy's burger. Although I've had Wendy's burgers before, I can't really remember what they taste like. There just aren't enough distinct characteristics to hold onto. I saw this album cover and I was like "oh yeah, that album...I remember that...No wait a minute, no I guess I don't..." It had basically completely faded from my memory, and I liked it that way. It kind of makes me sad that this list is going to perpetuate an album like this, even by a smidge. Just let it continue to die slowly from our collective memories.
Bland as fuck
"Dad! I want an R.E.M. cd!'' ''We've got R.E.M. at home.'' R.E.M. at home:
Not my thing.
Another artist I had never heard of--and right off the bat I know this is not for me. The folktronica aspect of the beats complementing the backbone of these songs is just too distracting and too much for me. Though there are some more straight up singer-songwriter guitar based songs in the middle of the album that I did find appealing. His voice reminds a ton of Ryan Adams and the whole album I just wished I was listening to one of Ryan Adams early solo records instead. I'm sure this album is great for a lot of people, but it's not for me.
highlights: why they all sound the same liked: no, poopy album sounds bland, repetitive, generic, most of times boring USE DIFFERENT DRUM PATTERNS FOR GODS SAKE
I've never been angry at a record just for existing before, yet here we are. This is a album so banal it's offensive. One star because I can't give zero.
Not a chance. No. No. No.
I did not like it.
N0pe
Nope. Selling loads doesn't mean i have to listen to it, I heard all the identical singles 1001 times, that's plenty. Babylon is a place where this doesn't exist.
Maybe just not in the mood but this kinda sucks!
Ugh.
Payback time. From wiki: "Gray believes that the success of White Ladder paved the way for 'soul-baring' artists such as James Blunt, Ed Sheeran, George Ezra, James Bay and Tom Walker."
A nice, albeit bland, listen. This Year's Love is the standout song.
Well bad.
Urrgh. Yes, Babylon is a good song but the whole album?? How is this Ireland’s best selling album of all time? Is this guy responsible for James Blunt? The horror.
I'm glad this list picked the album that has the only tolerable song on it. Babylon was a tune back when I was a teen and listening back to this song brings with it memories of the 90s and carefree days. But I think it's more with nostalgia that I am fond of this rather then any real musical credibility. Not if the rest of the album is anything to go by. I'd like to say it was mediocre and middle of the road, but I think that would be giving it too much accolade. Dreary at best, track after track goes by without a memorable melody, lyric or rhythm. The sort of music you can put on in the background and completely forget its on. It's so disturbingly apologetic that I find it offensive. Bland. Boring. If this is an album I have to listen to before I die, I'd have preferred to have waited til I was in a coma and couldn't remember it.
nope
Ugliest album cover ever. The music wasn't much better in my opinion, too slow and sad sounding
I made it though Please Believe Me. I had an old dj mix that started w/ a remix of that track, so there’s a little nostalgia there. And I’ll admit that if I’m feeling particularly depressed, This Year’s Love can be borderline tolerable. Alas, I did not make it more than 1.5 minutes of the 2nd song. I decided to listen to Neu! By Neu! Instead. I ended up buying NEU!’s first 3 albums. I’d review those instead, but I assume at least one of them will be on this thing at some point
The sound of accepting a dull fate. The feeling that haunts you when you enter your emply house with the blinds closed. The opposite (?) of Baroque music.
Boring, middle of the road, no thanks
alright
