Kate Bush
5/5
Right... I'm guessing this is going to be a bit of a theme but here we go: I know this album is great, but spending one day with it isn't enought. I feel bad rating the album anything without giving it its due diligence... So, I'll give it 5 stars in the hopes that I'm not wrong once I've dedicated the time to the album that it deserves. Again, Kate Bush is a fascinating and revolutionary artist, one that is worth studying and appreciating.

Pet Shop Boys
5/5
A surprisingly mellow album. I remember the Pet Shop Boys of my youth being a lot more “disco” so this was a terrific album just to chill and listen to. I love the structure of the songs and the accompanying lyrics. Would like to make the time to revisit this in the near future.

Wow. I have never heard of this band or this album before but I'm 2 minutes in and I think I'm hooked! I thought it was going to be a dance album by the cover... Well, this has just been an amazing experience. I have fallen in love with this album and discovered a genre I didn't even know existed known as "Space Rock". This album has been added to my high rotation.

I was already familiar with this one so it was great to have an excuse to put it on the new system at home. Anyone who doesn’t rate this album 5 stars is crazy.

Completely blown away by this album. Unfortunately, my review is not very original and reflects the others that I have read: Didn't know much about the band so this album was a pleasant surprise. Still incredible to think that this was released in 1991. Even the mixing is a joy to listen to. I've listened to it no fewer than 4 times since it showed up yesterday. I then jumped on ebay and purchased it on CD. A real gem!

Duran Duran

While I appreciate the 80s sound, I've never really "got" Duran Duran. This has been a great excuse to listen to the album in its entirety and... I know it's good music but I'll definitely need to listen to it more regularly.

Well…. I really tried on this one. There’s only a few songs on the album and I literally listened to it 3 times today. I’ll try and give it another listen tomorrow but I just can’t seem to gel with this album. I know this is good music but I can't see me heading back to this album in a hurry.
Alice In Chains
4/5
I have always needed a great excuse to listen to this album and here we are! Well, I’ve got to say, I loved this album. It’ll definitely be on high rotation.
Crosby, Stills & Nash

I know this is a great album but it’s going to take me a while to get into enough to really appreciate it. Love the melodies and the talent and I can’t wait to listen to this on high rotation.

Jeff Buckley

I've listened to this album a great deal during my twenties and thirties so it was great to have an excuse to listen with "older" ears and hear some things I hadn't heard before. Why 4 stars? Just because I think the album could "flow" a little better.... be a bit more cohesive maybe. Also, I've never been a fan of the number of covers on the album. Still a classic for very good reason.

Loved it! Super funky and great with the new setup at home. Amazing to hear the clear line of sight towards the bands that would this album would go on to influence. Definitely putting this one on high rotation.
Thelonious Monk

I’m sure this is great. I’ve just never gotten into jazz so it’s hard for me to judge! Seems a bit unfair on both accounts so I’ll give 3 stars
Janelle Monáe
5/5
LIstening to this album and reading about Jenelle Monae in the process was an absolute joy. What an artisit, with this album reflecting someone who may just be one of the more underrated artists of the 21st century. I can't wait to spend more time with this album and for it to be a part of my long term listening repitoire.

The Pretty Things
4/5
To me, this is the definition of an album "you must hear before you die". This album was just fun... And, although I'm going to pre-empt the significant number of people who will mention the similarities and idea taken from The Beatles, once you delve into the history of the members the album takes on a life of its own. One of the more interesting links being the members' connections to The Rolling Stones for example. I just had heaps of fun listening to this album and managed a good 3 listens over the past 24 hours with each listen becoming more and more enjoyable. Added to my ever-growing high rotation playlist!
Quicksilver Messenger Service
3/5
Kinda cool... Didn't really grab me but I enjoyed having a predominately instrumental rock album for a nice change.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Great for historical reasons but I can’t say with confidence that it will be on high rotation.
Neil Young
5/5
Loved it! Nice and short and classically Neil Young. I've only really ever listened to Harvest and Mirrorball so it was great to have another little piece of Neil Young history to add to the rotation.
Everything But The Girl
4/5
Really enjoyed this album. I was familiar with the singles so it was cool to go through and listen to the less popular songs. Love the balanced use of acoustic and electronic instruments. A great album to listen to with headphones… when all else fails, just concentrate on the haunting melodies and lyrics. A great find!
The Charlatans
5/5
Loved it! Great songwriting and overall vibe. Favorite track is number 10: Get it on. Can’t wait to play this one on high rotation.
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
2/5
Well... this is first album I couldn't get through and I feel terrible. Unfortunately, this is just not my type of music and it's also a double album to boot. I spent a lot of time on Wikipedia reading about the history of the album and it still wasn't enough to reel me in. I guess you could say... The circle has been unbroken.
The Roots
4/5
A great classic that has been a pleasure to sink my teeth into. There were a few songs that have been on high rotation for many years so, again, to go back and here those singles in the context of a whole album has been a real joy. 4 stars as there are a few songs that are a bit "grating" and it's hard for me to place those songs as neccessary additions to an otherwise well considered and highly influence album.
2/5
I'm sure this is great for someone but it's not something I'll revisit any time soon.
Gillian Welch
4/5
Not usually my taste but this album was great! I can imagine putting it on when someone comes over for dinner / chill
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Pretty cool... but I can't imagine going back too often.
Cypress Hill
3/5

Travis
3/5
Given my obsession with NME and Q magazine during my Australian high school tenure, I was familiar with a few of the singles from this album so I would have been surprised if I was surprised by the overall tone of this album and… I was not surprised. I enjoyed listening to this album a few times over the past 24 hours and could easily see myself putting it on if we need some chill music in the lounge room. I didn’t make the time to sink my teeth into the history of the album so that my be a bit of my downfall as well. Great songwriting, melodies and overall musicianship.
Sonic Youth
3/5
Great to listen to for historical reasons but I'd probably need some more time with it to fully appreciate the musicianship. Don't fret, I'm as dissapointed as anyone given how much I was looking forward to listening to this album.
Tom Waits
5/5
This is the Apoclypse Now of ablums you need to hear! Maybe it was the rain coinciding with one of the opening tracks being a weather report but I was immediately hooked on the vibe of this album. Mostly amazing poetry but it was also funnier than most other comedy albums I've heard over the past few years. And the fact that it's all live was the icing on the cake. Someone once told me that Apocylpse Now is such a good movie but it's a shame you can't put it on all the time... You have to SET aside time to really soak it in, and that's how I feel about this album. Definately time well spent. A real treat from a geniuine and honest artist.
The Who
4/5
I accidently let the negative reviews influence my initial reaction to getting this album. Boy was I wrong. I had a blast listening to this album on my "main" system in the living room. The energy, the banter and the overall artistic approach to this live album was a real joy to experience. Well ahead of its time and it 'almost' convinced me that live albums should form part of this list.

Dirty Projectors
3/5
I really wanted to like this album but it didn't give me anything to really grasp on to. This history was fascinating - including the stories behind the band members and the art work - so I would love to spend more time in the space of this album but in the meantime I'm giving it 3 stars. Mainly becuase I can appreciate the experiemental nature of the album and the fact that the Dirty Projectors tried to do something a little different... It just may be a little TOO different for me.

This is a lesson in why you shouldn't read the less favourable reviews of an album before diving in. Perhaps becuase we are predisposed to focus on the less positive aspects of, well, everything, it was difficult to shake the thoughts of the most negative reviews while listening to this album. In particular the 2 star Rolling Stones review published by Tom Graves on September 2, 1993. After hinting at the public excitement that Bjork had finally broken free of her too-arty-for-the-art-world band, The Sugarcubes, Graves lamented that, "Producer Nellee Hooper has sabotaged a ferociously iconoclastic talent with a phalanx of cheap electronic gimmickry. Björk’s singular skills cry out for genuine band chemistry, and instead she gets Hooper’s Euro art-school schlock — and we do, too." Despite being a long-time fan of Bjork's work, the phrase "cheap electronic gimmickry" stuck with me, along with the other detailed descriptions given for the somewhat mishmash of ideas on the album. There's still a lot to love about this album, and, MUST you hear before you die? Absolutely... If for no other reason that to get a glimpse into what reviewers might say about many popular albums if you strip away an artists current or potential fame. How many positive reviews are written with a hedging-our-bets mentality so that they are not looked upon too unfavourably when the album they're about to give 2 stars ends up becoming a classic?

This album is a great example of why I signed up for this project. I'm just going to post the lyrics to the chorus of the track, Sigourney Weaver, which nestles itself as track #4 on John Grant's glorious album, Queen of Denmark. That way, you'll know instantly if you're remotely interested in engaging with this acoustic rock masterpiece released in 2010 or if you're happy living a life of mediocrity and disappointment.
And I feel just like Sigourney Weaver
When she had to kill those aliens
And that one guy had to bring them back to earth
And she couldn't believe her ears
Note: However you imagine the song sounding, you're wrong. Check it out while researching the incredible backstory of this amazing artist.

I want to like Miles Davis, I really do, but I struggled hardcore to get through 1 hour and 46 minutes of this syle of jazz. More than happy to chalk it up to my lack of culture, I just don't think it should feel like such a drag to get through any of the albums on this shortlist...
