I thought I would like this album a bit more than I did, it's good music, was just expecting a bit more

Isn't anything is the second album recommended to me from My Bloody Valentine on this list. My Bloody Valentine reminds me a little of Sonic Youth. The music is adjacent to what I might listen to, but I don't want to listen to this music. Isn't Anything waivered in and out of "okay"-ness, almost reaching something that I could like with "All I Need", but the second half of the album was a slog to get through.

Gritty, grungy album. I appreciate the incorporation of noise and effects to create a signature sound, however I struggled to understand the vocals through the entire album due to the production of this noise. Lyrics are also a bit too creepy/overtly sexual for my liking. I understand why this album received the acclaim, but the band's sound does not resonate with me. Fave tracks: I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It)

I'm having a hard time with this one. I think I get what they're going for with the dissonance, experimental production and lazy vocals. Sometimes it comes together and works for them, but other times it just sounds really bad. Even when it does come together though, it kind of sounds like your generic 90s/00s alt-rock, but maybe that's a testament to it's influence, idk. I'm kind of surprised it was as acclaimed as it is, but maybe it was just early enough that there was nothing else to compare it to. Either way imo their follow up, Loveless, is much better. 4/01/2022 Today's Album: "Isn't Anything?" by My Bloody Valentine - This album is somewhat difficult to rate and I had to give it a couple of listens to really even get an idea of what to say, but here goes. I think this album is going for a really difficult to listen to, but still musically cohesive vibe that I think works in a lot of songs / sections of songs, but falls flat with many others. The first 3 or so tracks, in fact, really captured my attention by toeing this line of unlistenable and fantastic and it really is just so interesting to me. The singing as far as I can tell is really solid, at least from the male vocalist, and although it gets drowned out often in the mix, I think it is okay given that the instrumentals are pretty solid, despite how unorthodox and strange they sound. They have a diverse set of tracks, from slow and wavy to hard and rocking, this album really takes you through some grunge 101 and highlights a bunch of sounds of the grunge genre. I am getting a lot of velvet underground influence out of the overall vibe, but they are doing some stuff that reminds me of the strange production we would see on future outfits like the Strokes. However, this is only about half the tracks, with the others just sounding really generic and uncreative due to how much nuance this genre really needs to sound good in my opinion. They sound their best when they're being subtle, which is the case with most grunge groups, at least in my opinion. It just doesn't sound good to me when the guitars are overbearing and smothering the entire track with distorted mush. I think this album is definitely worth a listen as there is a lot of challenging content for newer music fans, but if you don't like grunge like Nirvana or early Radiohead, you're going to find this pretty unlistenable. I thought Loveless was their debut. This just sounds like a band wanting to be Sonic Youth. Very strange. Didn't much enjoy it and I doubt I'd be returning to it. Also, wonder if this record would be in this list if Loveless hadn't happened.

Liked this more than I thought I would. Starts out bleh but gets better. I can hear a lot of similarities to slacker stuff I listened to in college so I wonder why I never bothered with this group. Probably won't listen again, so no real loss I guess, ha.

I liked this far more then the other album I was given by MBV. An ambient symphony of noise and slight depression. Good stuff.

An odd duck, in a very specific way. Now, My Bloody Valentine subsequently became both extolled and notorious for Kevin Shields' protracted, exacting production methods, which of course gave us the mesmeric Loveless. Isn't Anything offers several hints of the direction MBV would take, but rather than seeing the album as just a precursor, can we examine the album as its own entity? Well, plenty of the ingredients of a great album are assembled. It's unique, heartfelt and often exquisite. However, Isn't Anything just lacks that tiny but essential bit of spice. It has 12 very fine songs, but not an unalloyed masterwork. You'll enjoy the album considerably while it plays, but you won't think about it the next day. Slightly depressing that I couldn't avoid qualifiers, but a mere blemish away from greatness still prevents greatness.

3.8 + Hard to not compare this (or any shoegazer rock for that matter) to "Loveless." It's got the whirly, swirly, buzzsaw guitars, which envelope the vocals in an undulating soup of colors and sounds. Somehow it doesn't punch with the same emotional clarity. Standout: "Cupid Come."

The back half contains the noisy melodies that make me love shoegaze, but the songs themselves, while varied, come across as particularly short and half-baked.

I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it as much as I wanted to, so I gave it a second listen. I can appreciate it for what it is, but I don't need to listen a third time, honestly.

This album is as interesting example of lo-fi production and a milestone of the shoegaze genre. It doesn't click for me at all, but i like Bilinda Butcher's vocals in "Lose My Breath".

I don't know if it's my headphones, but the mixing on this is awful. The instrumentals drown out the vocals entirely. Loud and obnoxious, at times I had to take off my headphones because the sound was just horrible. The droning eventually became too much and I couldn't make it through.

Really dull album none of the songs were any good and I wouldn’t listen to it again

It "isn't anything" more than noise. While that might be a bit harsh, I definitely felt that way at times working my way through this relatively short listen. I think this band is just a *bit* too weird and abstract for me to fully appreciate, and that's okay. I can see why people would like this and can even hear moments that might have inspired future rock groups (Radiohead is a band I can definitely see pulling from this material on some of their earlier work). It reminded me a lot of how I felt listening to the Sonic Youth album I received earlier on this list: I can definitely see them progressing beyond this album (especially since, in this case, it is their first), but I really don't have a desire to check out their other work after giving this one a go. It just felt pretty messy overall; although, it is hard to deny that the energy and diversity is present throughout. I don't blame anyone for enjoying this, but I didn't get much of it. 2/5.

Wasn't too interested in the sound or what the artists tried to do with this. A lot of the songs sound the same and are very drony, with a purposeful emphasis on things being out of tune (think Nine Inch Nails).

The bridge between Britpop and true shoegaze, this LP sees MBV wading into a prototype of the glide guitar style that would come to define an entire subgenre. Altered/eery melodies and song structures complement the style well, giving this album a somewhat menacingly ethereal feel. Not every track lands (the band can’t write a dynamic arrangement to save their life, meaning a few songs drag on), but the visceral creativity and knowledge of what comes next makes this LP a notable one.

They make guitar noises… probably very influential?

Like so many other people, the first My Bloody Valentine album I listened to was their seminal 'Loveless'. Consequently, any other MBV albums I listen to are ultimately going to be subjected to comparisons to 'Loveless', which is arguably an unfairly high bar. Few artists are ever able to accomplish something as incredible and striking as 'Loveless', which probably explains why it took the band another two decades before they released anything else. With all that said, I was comparing throughout my listen of 'Isn't Anything' while still trying to keep an open mind. So no, this album is not anywhere near as good, but you can hear indications of what was to come. MBV's mastery of the 'shoegaze' genre and the incredibly atmospheric, moving soundscapes they would go on to create clearly has its roots in songs like 'Lose My Breath' or 'Cupid Come'. On the other hand, songs like the album's opener 'Soft as Snow' all go to demonstrate that the band still had some growing to do. So, overall, the album is good - certainly much better than countless bands could hope to accomplish on their debut album. But I feel this is an album that will forever live in the shadow of what's to come.

Instantly don't like this, first track is abrasive 😂😭. 4th track is a bit more palatable, more punky, could imagine it on an Earthed dvd. 7th track is palatable too. At times some tracks seem a bit like The Smashing Pumpkins, but I can't help but feel this doesn't quite deserve a 3 though, so, 2/5

Wikipedia called this an example of shoegazing music, I think? I'd have to agree, although it was more watchgazing, as in when is this going to be over? It just sounded one long drone to me. I kept thinking "there's more TO this, right?" But nope, nothing else. Very disappointing. I did not loathe it, but it was very boring.

I think I went through a range of emotions listening to this album. At first I said shoegaze just doesn't work for me. Distorted guitars and heavy pedal use combined with almost inaudible vocals. Case in point Butcher's vocals - not bad but often drowned out by the noise. I know that is the sound they're going for, but I don't see the appeal. That was emotion one. Yet, even before the first track Soft as Snow was over I had to admit the guitar sound Shields creates (like a distorted siren) is pretty impressive. Still, it's also annoying as F. After two songs I thought good for them for pioneering a genre (e.g., I like Catherine Wheel and Silversun Pickups that came later), but it's a struggle to listen to. The album got better as I listened to more tracks. I think the distortion wasn't so intense and/or they better blended other elements (both vocals and other instruments) with the effects pedals. Cupid Come and You're Still in a Dream were more on par with Sonic Youth (still noise rock but less annoying). Tracks 5-7 regressed (my blood started to boil) but then tracks 8-12 redeemed. I still think it's a 2 for me, but I got close to a 3 on second listen.

I can appreciate the contribution that this band has made to modern music in how they've influenced multiple artists including some of my favorites but even after several listens this album really doesn't do anything for me.

This is the second MBV album I've heard and both times I had the same thought - I feel like I *should* like this, but I just don't. I tried to listen closer to this one to figure out why. There's a lot going on in these songs and some of the effects and riffs are cool, but the word that keeps coming to mind as I listen is BORING. Another word is LIFELESS. I think a large part of it is the singing - both singers are pretty dull - but there's also no energy to the music despite all the noise. Not to mention the presence of occasional feedback and noise which lately leads me to an automatic 1-point reduction. The last track added the obnoxiousness of being intentionally out of tune. I'd sum up this album as Whiny Suburban Kid Anthems. I'll give it a 2 rather than 1 solely because of the occasional interesting effects (like on the first track).

I love Shoegaze, and in that realm, My Bloody Valentine reign supreme. This album is thoughtful, melodic, driving, messy, ethereal, and every other superlative. This is music on its own terms, willing to borrow from what came before, yet also willing to push the envelope forward in a new and exciting way.

Dirge is the only word for this. I could just about detect a tune in some of the early tracks, but from track 5 onwards it was just noise. I somehow managed to resist the almost overwhelming urge to turn it off before the end, but found myself getting more and more angry and irritated as a result. My face was an increasingly tightly screwed scowl for at least the last 25 minutes. Awful. 1/5.

In line and time with what the Pixies were up to by the sound of it. Lots more fuzz and noise though. Feed Me With Your Kiss is sick tune. Nothing Much To Lose also a good one. 50 points for the all lowercase band name.

Being a huga fan of Loveless which is one of my favorite albums ever, I was pleasantly surprised by how abrasive and noisy this album was. THe melodies and heavy guitar riffs really sold me throughout the album. I also love how easily listening the vocals are on this album in compared to other works. Great lyrics as well which was a plus and expected. Overall easy 9/10

Isn't Anything isn't…good. In the late 80s I was into hard rock, metal, modern and rap. Indie music like MBV didn't register on my radar.

A wall of droning discordant industrial noise, that seemingly sounds the same regardless of where you jump to in all but one of the tracks. Avoid.

I don’t think I’ve heard this band before. This album started a bit depressing and emo but some of the last tracks were more upbeat. I feel like ash, who I listened to in my youth, was influenced by my bloody valentine. A 90s Irish band influenced by an 80s Irish band sounds right.

Isn’t Anything, my bloody valentine: 2/10 Opening track isn’t my favorite, feels like it grates my ears a bit. “Lose my breath” doesn’t sound “good” by any conventional definition, but for so me strange reason I didn’t mind it. “Cupid Come” starts out good, then slowly gets bothersome tbh. “You’re still in a dream” just sounds too loud and overbearing for me. Ok, seriously? Can you even call this music? “No more sorry” literally just sounds like lyrics sung over jumbled chaotic sound🤦🏻‍♂️ “All I need” gives us more of the now oh so familiar distorted reverberated guitars, and I wish they’d change it up a bit. “Feed me with your kiss” is probably the worst one so far. So freaking loud and deafening, and not in a good way at all. Got to hand it to the drummer though, at least he does his job well😂 “Sueisfine” Sue may be fine but I’m definitely not. No mbv, repeating the same words over and over again doesn’t make a terrible concept any better. I actually don’t mind “Several girls galore” surprisingly, maybe bc it is one of the shortest tracks so far, thus not prolonging the agony to my ears.“You never should” brings us more terrible mumbled vocals and yep, more obnoxious guitar. “Nothing much to lose” is probably my favorite track so far, most likely due to its more straightforward “Cureish” sound. The guitar is still much to loud though. “I can see it” actually has a discernible melody, so points there from me. Conclusion: No thank you, this album really “Isn’t Anything” special at all.

My bloody Valentine reminds of a past trip to Thailand. I had bigger hands than that girl! I remember dying of pneumonia which was easier to bare than most of this album. Not the worst I’ve listened too though

My Bloody Valentine's debut album, "Isn't Anything," is actually quite something! Described as "dream pop, shoegaze," this Irish/English band received critical acclaim for this 1988 release, and I am excited to jump in! The opening track, "Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside)" contains eclectic vocals, drums, and bass alongside a string-like violin-ish dragging sound that is quite peculiar. I'm into it! "Lose My Breath" is the next track, featuring vocals that I believe are attributed to Bilinda Butcher of the band. This song features acoustic guitar strumming and angelically haunting "doo doo doo" non-words that are quite lovely. Track 3, "Cupid Come" has some straightforward guitar and drum instrumentation (and some sonic artifacts!) with vocals provided by Kevin Shields. Kevin's lyrics allude to romance, waiting, desire. "(When You Wake) You're Still in a Dream" is a fast-paced song with Shields on vocals mixed with Butcher's classic angelic harmonies (she's giving me some Amy Lee vibes) that takes the listener away amidst lyrics alluding to a lover who is more invested in love than their partner, quite a painfully familiar sentiment for anyone! "No More Sorry" opens with echoy guitars and a building percussion that leads the listener to Shield's vocals. This track is distorted and dream-like and almost soothing! "All I Need" is another dreaming song with layered guitar, bass, and drums that makes me feel like I've entered the 7 minutes in which the body goes from awake to asleep. I feel almost transported to a dreamworld with a heartbeat-like drum along for the ride. The next track, "Feed Me with Your Kiss," comes in hot with a fast-paced drum beat sharing the spotlight with lo-fi guitars and Shield's hard-to-distinguish vocals that are a staple to the shoegaze genre. "Sueisfine" is the next track with more dreamy vocals and noise. The title sounds eerily similar to "suicide" but that could just be my mind playing tricks on me. Perhaps that is what MBV want from me... The following track, "Several Girls Galore" is more sonic artifacts attacking my auditory senses with drums, guitar, and layered vocals that are a little hard to understand. This track may be about a woman with schizophrenia, which makes sense to me considering the song is difficult to grasp, yet more powerful than I could ever appreciate. "You Never Should" is a song about a strained relationship. The lyrics allude to that: "Ooh, you said the fault was mine Yeah, but you never should" I sense some blame, animosity, and heartache in this track as the layered guitars and guitars and guitars attack my senses, filling my soul with some despair for this fictional (or perhaps autobiographical?) breakup. "Nothing Much to Lose" is the penultimate track and feels poppier and easier to understand. I detect a hint of a "take me back" attitude based on the lyrics, but with a "let's see what happens" state of mind, as if to say, "well, I'll try to get her back. Nothing much to lose now." I found myself humming along to the outro, very catchy! My Bloody Valentine close out their debut album with, "I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It)". I decided to do some research into the song's meaning, and people have interpreted it as a breakup song, a song about suicide, and my favorite, a song about anorgasmic ejaculation. Whatever MBV may have had in mind with this closer, it is obviously about a loss of some kind, and to me that is a perfect way to close out this album of lo-fi noise. And perhaps it's some slight confirmation to my theory regarding the aforementioned "Sueisfine." Favorite track: Sueisfine Honorable mention: All I Need

Absolutely gorgeous, I love MBV's style so much!

чувствую себя очень противоречиво. С одной стороны это, конечно, важный альбом для шугейза и экспериментальной гитарной музыки в целом, но с другой — до него уже были и You Living All Over Me динозавра и Psychocandy жисус эн мэри чейна, а кокто твинс уже с пяток, наверное, альбомов выпустили (хотя их к шухейзу я бы с большой натяжкой относил). Безусловным переворот в музыкальном ландшафте будет Loveless, который дропнется тремя годами позже, а Isn't Anything — это всё же скорее разогрев. Здесь уже есть вот этот трейдмарк саунд МБВ (а значит и большинства последовавших шг-групп 90х), но кататстрофически мало именно музыкального наполнения: в плане запоминающихся или хотя бы различимых на слух мелодий, интересных текстур и эфирного вокала. Даже более того — ближе к финалу альбома группа как будто отказывается от своего дрим-рок саунда и на некоторых номерах даёт полноценное рубилово (e.g. Feed Me With Your Kiss, Nothing Much To Lose), что, впрочем, для меня только в плюс играет. По итогу сложно определиться, давать ли этому альбому оценку за то, что он есть, или за то, во что он превратится в будущем. Но, наверное, для себя сойдусь на 7 — неподготовленному слушателю такое вынести будет определённо тяжело. Если честно — не уверен, что ему место в этом списке, это скорее историческая хуйня для нёрдов, которые после Лавлесса полезут изучать историю становления шугейз-саунда.

Странная, но интересная вещь. Из-за аранжировки первый трек представляется самым одиозным, но потом вроде с ним миришься. А уже второй трек весьма приятен. Да и с остальными треками проблем вроде не возникает. Разве что фоном через динамики слушать - ваще неупотребимо. В наушниках - хорошо. Ещё через звуковуху плеера пропустил - каеф. В целом альбом держит баланс между выёбистостью своим дохуя уникальным саундом и адекватностью композиций. То есть за всеми этими странными для неготового уха звуковыми экспериментами кроются неплохие, в общем, песни. И одно другому даже не мешает: постепенно первое в ушах коннектится со вторым, и выходит вполне норм. Звучит как то, к чему я могу когда-нибудь вернуться.

You can see the fingerprints of the Smiths and British New Wave all over this album. Other than having a terrible mix for vocals, it is a fairly creative and ground-breaking album for 1988 in that it laid a foundation for even darker and harder music to follow -- Goth / Emo.

Cool name for a band, but this is just awful. I had to check to make sure I was listening to the right link. Who likes this? I can't understand what the guy is saying and the production is so poor on this that I can't tell if the guitars are distorted or just out of tune. The only talented person in the band is the drummer, but they can't carry the whole band. No, this is shit and deserves 1 star.

“Isn’t Anything” by My Bloody Valentine (1988) This is foreign territory for me, but an album as innovative as this has to be a classic in the technical sense of exploratory and experimental music which subsequently becomes influential in establishing a genre (shoegaze). Lyrically, there’s not much to say, because the poetics consist of clipped expressions lacking cohesion in either sound or imagery. Rather, the thing which draws our focus here is the creative sound, unhindered by ordered melodies or compositional structure. My suspicion is that the only people who ‘get’ the artistry are the artists themselves and their close initiates. That said, the tonal landscape is extraordinarily interesting. Vocals are (intentionally, I assume) usually quite subdued in the mix. Someone doesn’t want us to concentrate on what or how these ‘songs’ are ‘sung’. Drums are weak. If the band’s intention is to highlight their innovative sound, their rhythmic structure needs to avoid drawing attention to itself. But the unsteady tempo of the drums (e.g., “Cupid Come”) distracts. Some have described their electronic effects as ‘ethereal’, but it could just as well be described as ‘subterranean’. If you’re familiar with this album, and find it creative and influential, I’m with you. If you’re not familiar with it and aren’t in the mood for a somewhat disappointing adventure, skip it. This album could have been better than it is. 2/5

What can I say; a calmer smashing pumpkins. Maybe they should call themselves carving pumpkins. I thought this was bullet for my valentine and I kind of wish it was. Pretty decent but I’d lump it in with yesterday’s album in the mediocre bin. And what’s up with the Album cover? I’m sure they took multiple photos that didn’t have lens flare but if you look closely you can see that little bloody valentine peeking out.

It’s obvious to hear the influence this album had on future artists. As a whole I found myself a little underwhelmed. That’s not to say I didn’t find songs that I did enjoy. Out of 10 I’d give it a 7.4.

Wish I could come up with descriptions like this on my own: "...dry ice-piercingly intense guitar drones and hefty nods to miasmic hardcore soup, oozing a contrary trance-spun drone. Noise becomes beauty as feedback is layered over vocals over feedback ad infinitum."

MBV is a band that all the music nerds talk about. I’ve maybe heard an album before, but certainly not this one. I really like this, it feels like well-established shoegaze, like these guys knew exactly what they were going for. I love the fuzzed out, washed out aesthetic here. Plenty of songs that I could feel myself melting into. Favorite tracks: Cupid Come, No More Sorry, All I Need, I Can See It, Lose My Breath. Album art: Like the music, it looks like a hazy, washed out photo of the band. Nothing crazy, but very fitting. 4/5

Experimental, noisy and kind of unintelligible. I like how Sueisfine sounds like Suicide. I didn't mind this in the background while doing some mindless work but nothing I would revisit.

This is old school post-punk and goth, and i fucking love it. this band has so much history and influence on so many genres, and their music is so amazing. Right along there with the smiths, I rate this band in the highest regards for their music. on this album, "Sueisfine", "Nothing Much to Lose" and "Cupid Come" are easily the best tracks on the album.

This kind of shoegazey alternative... All the willful dissonance and prickly unfriendliness of punk without even the toughness or commitment to counterculture. This made almost no impression on me. Not quite bad enough for 2 stars but that's a scant 3.

Not as good as Loveless, but still has some very cool sounds and weirdness. Like walking through an icy wood at dusk.

NOT a fan. I guess this is what they would call 'noise rock'? It's a lot of noise and not a lot of rock. Very grating and hard to listen to at times. The first album on this list I haven't finished.

I’ve never enjoyed white noise this much in my life

I'm sure this album is very important and hugely impactful to some set of people. I am excluded from that set, however. The entire album felt like noisy droning to me. Not the worst 1 star I've listened to, but still wouldn't listen again.
