You ever find those songs on YouTube that are “X song but if it was written with minor chords”? This sounds kinda like that. It seems to be intentionally dissonant at times. I like to think I have at least a little tolerance for material that functioned as a blueprint for forming a genre or trend down the road, in this case shoegaze. But this just didn’t click on any level for me. Especially with the knowledge that MBV did this sound justice later on. ‘Isn’t Anything’ sits in an uncomfortable middle ground between being a background-listening, passive sonic atmosphere and a listening experience worth paying any close attention to. 1/5

The music would be good, but it’s undercut by dissonance and noise.

My personal taste is offended by the "wall of sound" concept, with poor mastering being done on purpose, and the instruments being blended into one mess to hide blend bocals. Add primitive percussion track on top and I just hate this album.

This noise-pop album is murky and fatiguing, its layers of distortion and buried vocals smothering melody and emotion beneath a cluttered haze.

Made it through 2 or 3 songs before turning it off. Really not my jam. Drums, guitar, all of it was just bad.

Never listened to My Bloody Valentine before and after this album I don't think I will again (unless of course they appear again in this challenge cause mama didn't raise a quitter).

This album adds nothing to the greater music scene. I’d barely call it music. I honestly feel that this is terrible.

I’m 0/3 on MBV albums. Not my jam at all. I actively hate how pretentious Kevin Shields is and I find that if you’re going to be that much of an asshole about your music, then it should at least be something that anyone couldn’t jus throw together in a long weekend.

I hated this. Sorry. Is this what "noise music" is? Some parts of it weren't awful but overall I felt like there was just too much discordant sound.

Literally what were they even saying on this album? The sound mixing is so whacked to the point the already muted vocals just get overwhelmed.

Let me accentuate the only positive: I've come to learn of the subgenre that is "shoegazing" and with the wonderful assistance of My Bloody Valentine, I now know that this and pretty much all shoegazing absolutely fucking sucks. 1/10.

I did not enjoy this one bit. Want to hear the most annoying sound in the world? Track 1. From the very start it was a no go for me. I have heard of this band before never listened. In the wiki here says "shoegazing" which I like somethings. Not this one.

MBV again - again noise

I always love listening to people strum a bunch of power chords while someone sings tuneless over them, it makes for such interesting and pleasant music to listen to.

This was surprisingly bad. The first track really turned me off of the whole album, I just couldn't get over the strange sounds and layering. One of the few albums that just sounds like noise to me and not really music.

Shoegaze, lo-fi, noise-rock...whatever you call it, I call it disquieting and unnerving. It's loud and hard to hear at the same time?! I guess that kind of makes it interesting, but struggling to hear lyrics over distortion isn't my idea of music (good music, anyway). I never thought a style of music would creep me out and make me feel uneasy.

What a boring depressing album.

Tuneless bollocks. Okay that was a bit harsh, there are a couple of tunes in there, but I wouldn't advise listening too hard to find them. Guitars are just a wall (and a wail) of noise, vocals are everywhere except on the beat. Would have got one star anyway, but I'm knocking a point off for the lower case spelling. So in my mind, zero stars, but officially it's a no from me and one single, solitary star. Edit: it wasn't harsh at all. This Isn't Anything like what I'd want to listen to again on this side of the mortal plane.

Every song has been taken off Spotify except for Feed Me With Your Kiss. I cant really give it a fair rating but from the one song I listened to it wasnt great.

This is the third My Bloody Valentine album I’ve needed to listen to on this list. Hopefully the last. This is the most coherent of the three, both in terms of the vocals being audible words and the music being actual music (to an extent), but it’s still not very good.

# Playlist Track - Lose My Breath # Notes - There's something about this that makes me feel incredibly old. I just can't seem to enjoy the droning mix on those tracks. - Everything gets blended in a repetitive, monotone rumble that just isn't for me. Not event a single good track on this one.

Was very confused to see how old this band is and learn they started in Dublin, till I remembered that I had yet again confused them with Bullet for My Valentine... I tried but it's SO not my thing - mumbly, uninteresting tunes, out-of-tune singing, heavy but sleepy at the same time (so an uninteresting middle). Quite liked the 'ooh' bits of Lose My Breath which are sweet with nice chord changes but that was all I liked on the whole album so...not great. Survived to the end of 'Several Girls Galore' but then gave up.

If white noise decided it was time to produce an overly edgy, poorly mixed, shoegaze-if-heard-from-two-houses-down album that was so bad it’s no longer on spotify.

The noisy style of the band turned out to be unrewarding throughout the album. All tracks sounding more or less the same, it felt more like a mess than a thoroughly crafted record. A one-time listen.

Holy shit, I think they misspelled ears. My bloody ears. Please make it stop. It's clear this band has talent, but it feels like they're intentionally trying to be contrarian or something. Almost as if they're too cool for hits.

The vocals are so buried it feels like I’m listening to the music through my noise cancelling headphones and the singer is in the next room whispering. The music is disjointingly annoying too.

“We’re edgy! We’re different! Our band name is all lowercase!” Soft As Snow has to be one of the worst songs I’ve ever listened to, possibly ever made. Their ability to plumb new depths of awful music that only the most contemptible twats imaginable could possibly like is the only noteworthy thing about My Bloody Valentine! I think there’s a phenomenon where some people fool themselves into thinking that because something is difficult to listen to, they must be achieving something by doing so, that it must be worth doing, that it must make them a special little bean who is better than all the people who “just don’t get it”, otherwise what was the fucking point? They just can’t accept that it sounds shit because it is shit and they’ve wasted their time/money. Anyway, bands like My Bloody Valentine survive by feeding off morons like that.

You would think that the most amazing thing about this is that people actually bought it. However, even more astonishingly they remastered it. As they say, you can polish a shit, but it is still just shit

Oof, this album has some of the worst singing and drumming I’ve ever heard. Listening to the drummer trying and repeatedly failing to hit the cymbal on beat 2 in the song ‘Cupid Come’ is physically painful. The only coherent musical ideas were the tracks ‘Sueisfine’ and ‘Nothing Much To Lose’. Pretty much everything else is just incomprehensible noise.

Yeah nope, shoegaze is not for me. In fact, I can't stand it. My Bloody Valentine didn't create something that could reliably be called music. The songs meld together into an indistinguishable mess. The lead singer's voice drones on and on. The backing music, if you can call it music, drowned out the vocals, but upon reflection, maybe that was a blessing. An album that was a nightmare to get through.

THIS WAS WORSE THAN THE LAST MY BLOODY VALENTINE ALBUM. Speaking of which, why do we need more than one album from them on this project? This album was an absolute chore to get through. Shoegaze at its worst and noisiest.

Such a stupid, stupid album. Can’t tell what the blithering idiot who’s singing is saying (and I really don’t care after all that anyways), the instruments sound like they’re all being played wrong and out of time, and the whole experience made me feel nothing but frustration and annoyance. Maybe there’s a reason nobody had never made music like this before, it’s cause it sucks, is boring, uninteresting, and vague. Stupid album that never should have been on the list and I never want to hear again.

I feel like I’ve heard My Bloody Valentine being regarded quite highly, but I must admit that I don’t quite understand why, at least not judging from this album. I think ‘(When you wake) You’re still in dream’ is quite a kickass song, but found it really hard to find anything else that could even be considered decent. I enjoy other shoegaze bands like Slowdive, but this didn't even come close to that. They have quite a lot of out of tune things and various noises in their tracks, and it doesn’t work that well in my opinion. The first track on the album is a good example of this, so is ‘No more sorry’ and ‘All I need’. I recognize that there is something there that has something, but I just think this isn’t for me at all. Strong 1.

Gosh I am sick of this group. I don’t find anything good about them and I just keep waiting for it to be over. I blanked out at some point and ignored it because it was just so bad sounding - both music and vocals together were just nails on a chalkboard.

They are just not for me. Irritating music - I had high hopes with the intro track that maybe they'd be like early MSI or depeche mode but the songs were the wrong kind of noise rock and just incredibly irksome. Not enjoyable for me.

This is the debut studio album by My Bloody Valentine. Heavy on distortion and reverb, this album is absolutely deafening. The inclusion of this album is a disservice to other musicians.

That started kind of OK before turning into utter bullshit

"Lose my breath" reminds me a lot of Stereolab and that's probably the nicest thing I've ever said about shoegaze, although the fact it feels like a 6 minute song despite only being 3½ is indicating that this might be a trek of an album. It's no secret that I massively dislike this genre of music, and this album is genuinely a chore. It is relentless, cacophonous and almost completely indistinct. At 38 minutes, it's 34 minutes too long. Sure, it was a bit of a new direction for music and clearly went on to influence some artists who did actually good stuff, but lordy it is not for me.

I was shoegazing at the power button on my speaker, contemplating if i should turn it off.

Every track on this record feels unfinished or unmastered. For example, the sound proposed in "You're Still in a Dream" is beautiful, but then the vocals seem not the blended in with the music. I understand this is on purpose. Still, it is a difficult idea to execute properly and this is not achieved in this album. The record starts in a softer tune and afterwards increases in head-bobbability. In neither half of the album could I enjoy a song properly. I will have to give it the lowest rating.

Not what I was expecting. 4 songs in and I want to nope right out but I promised myself I’d actually give every album a fair chance. Why did I do that? If I ever make such a promise again remind me of the painful experience listening to this whole album was. Thankfully only 38 minutes long, even though it feels like 38 hours. 1/5 because 0/5 just isn’t possible.

I've become quite partial to a bit of shoe-gaze so I wasn't expecting this tuneless, mumbling mess. Musically it lost me in the first 5 seconds & never got me back. And I have no clue as to it's lyrical merit - passing such judgement requires the lyrics to be audible.

I continue to fail to see the appeal of this band. For a solid 75% of this album, it sounds like the band and the vocalist are working off of different set lists. The vocals just... don't match the music rhythmically OR melodically. Sometimes, they don't even seem to be in the same key. Why?! Why do people fawn over this crap?

I never could get into shoegaze, and MBV is probably the most notable purveyors of this genre. To me it's just too noisy and gimmicky and it wears on you fast. They improve a bit with their subsequent album Loveless (which is a fan favourite), but this album was not fun to listen to at all.

I hadn't heard of the genre "Shoegaze" before but I can definitively say it is not for me. This album is both too much sound-wise and too little vocally - muted singing and often off-key and weak. I could only handle about a minute or so of each song before having to skip to the next - I was viscerally cringing through the whole thing

I try not to say albums suck because I typically believe there is something in the music for someone but this album sucked. There wasn't anything good musically about it and it was just dissonant annoying sounds for over 30 minutes

There was truly nothing enjoyable about listening to this album. It’s very noisy, terrible production quality, and unpleasant in sound, instrumentation and vocal.

They didn't even try to make it sound good. Thought this was bullet for my valentine, minus points for getting my hopes up (I want to give this a zero, but that's not possible, so I give this a one)

What was this? It's weirdly mixed, like someone experimenting with a mixing software and just adding all the different parts they made up on the stop to see if they could

Sometimes I get why someone or some band has more than one album on the 1001 list (like Beatles or Bowie, for example), but in some situations is hard to get why "My Bloody Valentine" got three spots on it (please, be only 3). Ok, they are some ~different~ kinds of rock but let's agree that just a quick demonstration is enough to show precisely why/what/how they change with their music, and it's done. It's not necessary to listen to another half an hour of it. Well, after the first rage section, the album is actually better than the other ones that I got here ("Loveless" and "m.b.v"). At least it is a less annoying, more straightforward song. So I'll rate it with 1-star just for justice with my ears since I gave 2 for the others (worst) ones for some reason that just the past me will know (my comment on it was that the noise sound hypnotized me, and I can't use a better word).

Klinkt alsof het op een zaterdagmiddag in een garage in elkaar is gezet. En dat men gaandeweg de opnamen er steeds meer met de pet naar is gaan gooien. De titel van de plaat zegt het eigenlijk al, het 'is helemaal niks'.

Dit album luister je niet bij een goed gesprek. Je luistert het niet tijdens het wegwerken van je werkmail. En je luistert het niet in de auto. Kortom. Je luistert het niet. Nooit.

Cool name for a band, but this is just awful. I had to check to make sure I was listening to the right link. Who likes this? I can't understand what the guy is saying and the production is so poor on this that I can't tell if the guitars are distorted or just out of tune. The only talented person in the band is the drummer, but they can't carry the whole band. No, this is shit and deserves 1 star.

I'm sure this album is very important and hugely impactful to some set of people. I am excluded from that set, however. The entire album felt like noisy droning to me. Not the worst 1 star I've listened to, but still wouldn't listen again.
