A third my bloody valentine album. Just what we didn’t need. Well this one isn’t as bad as the most recent one but not as good as their best album. That puts this at still not that good. This is music you listen to when you don’t want to focus on the music and maybe do something else. 4.1/10

Not really my bag

Some great songs on this album! it doesn’t flow as nicely as Loveless, but you can see where they were going.

For whatever reason, I always thought this was the followup to Loveless but now knowing that wasn't the case, it puts things into a different perspective. And trying to compare it too much to Loveless, I failed to give Isn't Anything the attention it deserves with only recently finding out how much it stands out on it's own. Sure, it's pretty disarming and unsettling with the level of energy and layers of sound, but give it some time, and you'll find a collection of songs that will leave a mark and are quite beautiful in places. Put your headphones in, crank it up a bit, and let it absorb you. 4.5

It worked pretty well as background music but I don't see much potential otherwise.

When I started this I was pretty positive that Loveless would be on this list. Sure enough it was. Then I got MBV a little later. That one could be been excluded if you ask me. I didn't expect this one to be here either but it's better than MBV. Yeah, I didn't think it would be included but I'm still giving it a good score. It's not quite 5 but it is very good. A strong 4.

Let's mix some stoner/spacey vocals with some decent rock instrumentals. No? Let's just try some really annoying slower songs with a coalition of clashing sounds. This whole album sounds like the work experience guy did the mixing. This shit isn't just irritating, it's aggravating.

Listened Before? N Pretty cool. Reminds me of music that appeared 3-5 years later in the US. Indie rock that paralleled grunge like Dinosaur Jr. Not quite as catchy as some of their American counterparts but I enjoyed it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Cupid Come

Fav: Lose My Breath

Really strong debut from MBV. All the elements are already there, and I think this one would have been be enough to propel the band at the top of the shoegaze food chain pyramid, but they took things so much further with Loveless that it's impossible for Isn't Anything to not be shadowed by it. But it's a really strong debut, the first side in particular is absolutely fantastic.

Pretty good, but nothing that really hooks me into coming back to it.

A very nice debut album for the legend My Bloody Valentine, but the best was yet to come with Loveless.

An ok album by My Bloody Valentine full of fuzz rock guitar and lo-fi vibes, with probably one of the first albums in the Shoegaze sub-genre. The sound of the album checks out with the whole band sleeping together in one house and recording off of a couple of hours sleep. However that surprisingly isn't a detriment to the overall ethereal and spectral quality of the album. Best: Lose My Breath Worst: Nothing Much To Lose

Another list of shame band that I'm really glad I've touched base on now! For what I expected to be classic shoe gaze, this was refreshingly crunchy and unpretentious, with moments of real beauty. I thought the flow was magnificent and the sound matched the elevated repressed secuality emo angst of the lyrics. Did a really nice museum walk with this on and given the context was really loving it. Four and a half. Fave track: No More Sorry

What I needed to hear this morning - could sink my teeth into this a bit. The crunch on their guitars really melted over me this listen. Had only ever listened to Loveless and had never heard of this album til now, but it's one I'm glad to have discovered. Fave track: Sueisfine

Droning vaguely whiny album with quiet off-key lyrics. Other bands like HUM do it way better.

I was initially confused why this album has a low rating and Loveless has a good rating, but now having listened to both, I kinda get it. They're a bit different, and this one seems less accessible. I don't really get it, but maybe I just wasn't in the right mood. The parts that lean a bit towards rock weren't my favourite, especially that first song, but it was all kinda boring. I guess my favourite song was Several Girls Galore?

Solid album. I only started listening to this band a few years ago. Shoegaze is a genre I enjoy.

I might hypothetically like some shoegaze, but this album is so repetitive and vague. What I like best is the album cover, washed out with intense light. I think it represents the sound well.

It's kinda crazy that all three of My Bloody Valentine's albums are on this list. This album, much like their third album, suffers from the inevitable comparison with Loveless, which is my favorite MBV album (and it's not close, either). This album just feels a bit half-baked compared to Loveless. The elements that make that album great are here, but they're inconsistent, and some of the things that they're trying on this album don't work super well. It's good, it's definitely a groundbreaking album, it's just not quite the caliber of album that the Smashing Pumpkins can rip their entire career off of yet 4/5

No huge standouts for me, but generally ok. I understand that they're a defining noise artist, but a little too much noise for me.

Good album, they hadn't found that unique sound they have on Loveless so it kinda sits somewhere in the middle.

The promise is here that is delivered on Loveless… but not quite there yet. Still, some gems.

The kings of shoegaze. I forgot just how good this is. I tend to jump straight to Loveless when listening to MBV and it has been years since I last listened to this, but it still stands the test of time. Fuzzy, experimental, noisey, it’s the perfect introduction to shoegaze / dream rock / whatever you want to call it. And it leads perfectly to Loveless - you can hear where the ideas are formed and then they really just run with it. Soft as snow / feed me with a kiss / you never should / several girls galore are my highlights, but really it’s all great

I've given My Bloody Valentine a listen previously as on paper shoegaze should be my thing. I hear their influence on lots of great bands but I don't think I'm quite on board yet, though this was better than last time. Preferred the heavier, more overdriven stuff, some of the poppier songs passed me by. Will probably be a fan in 2-5 album plays, for now it's okay.

Absolutely fine, preferred the tracks with the majority male vocals, can't remember anything else about it. I thought they were an emo/screamo band, so I was surprised listening to this not-far-removed lift music.

Never listened to these before. Until engagingly recently I assumed they were some circa 2000 emo band..... Hmm... On the face of it I feel like I should like it more than I did. The guitars and drums are often great, but so much distortion that I can't understand the vocals....Is that shoegaze? Not convinced. I thought it got better towards the end of the album. "You never should" and "nothing much to lose" were the best tracks. This was interesting enough that I might be back, but not sold

I've only ever listened to Loveless. TBH I didn't realize MBV put anything out in the 80s. Album kicks off with Soft as Snow, which has one of the most discordant, uncomfortable string(?) lines forming the backing. Sounds like somebody pulling a bow across a guitar and then playing the result backwards. I'll give it credit for being unique, but it isn't exactly something my ears love. Its like the audio equivalent of opening a medicine cabinet door. Lose My Breath flips into a shoegazey number with strummed acoustic and vocals that call to mid-90s Smashing Pumpkins. Fine enough song, but I got bored by lack of progression. Feed Me with Your Kiss jams. This and Sueisfine both have punk influence. Its like aggressive shoegaze if there is such a thing. Nothing Much to Lose is another great song. Love the tempo changes and guitar / drum work through the last minute of the song. I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It) closes out the album with an out of tune guitar strum creating a classically dissonant vibe. There would appear to be a direct line from the likes of this to Alex G. 4/5

Off beat and moaning, like a crackhead faking an orgasm. The best thing I can call this album is generic.

I don't know if I have ever listened to them. They sound like if Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins merged. The way that they play guitar and drums make it seem like every one of these songs could be in Rock Band the video game. The more that the album goes on the less I like it to be honest. I can't really tell a difference in any of the songs and the singer just doesn't seem to fit in with the style of heavy rock. The drumming on Nothing Much to Lose is pretty hardcore though I must say. Good not great album. Feels like a 2.5 but i'll give it a roundup

Was scared to see "noise" be part of the genre after that one abomination, but this does it some justice! Love some of the feedback on this album. Just incredibly dissonant in a great way. Nothing really stuck out too crazy for me, but it was enjoyable and made me want to listen to Loveless again.

MBV never had a bad album. Their first LP shows signs of their post-punk origins., with clear(er) vocals and an aggressive take on their noise like Sonic Youth, yet still takes the dreamy poppy elements established by Jesus & the Mary Chain. It's warm and employs clever use of the wall of sound that very little other artists could attain to such expertise and with so much experimentation (done right). 12 songs and they all stand out. It's a consistent sound, but yet there's always something peculiar going on that intrigues me and grabs my attention. Starts very strong with some slow catchy songs that give you a good taste of what they're capable of while being ear worms driving you further into the album. The next 3 songs show their more ethereal side, really cranking up the distortion. The second half goes on the opposite end of the spectrum with full-on punk, which they would abandon by Loveless. Which I can understand, considering that although they were all good, I was not as impressed as the first half. "I Can See It" is a nostalgic and satisfying closer. Loveless is on another realm of an art form. But for a record that had an outstanding influence on the shoegazing genre, it's everything I could ask for.

Couldn't get along with this at all, I'm afraid. Vocals just too weak and almost in the background, whilst the foreground instrumental wasn't doing enough on its own to sustain it in the most part - it does get more interesting when it gets heavier, but not enough to sustain an album. 2/5.

Better than the other My Bloody Valentine album (which coincidentally came up just yesterday!) I could actually understand some of the lyrics on this one, and the music seemed to be a bit punchier. Still not a big fan though.

Mörkt och coolt. Men ganska gymnasial edgy emo core. Det behöver inte ta så mycket från musiken, som är liksom omslutande, långa distade gitarrtoner som får hela skallen att vibrera. Jävligt punkigt och rockigt kan det också vara, som i t.ex. '(When You Wake) You're Still In A Dream' eller 'Feed Me With Your Kiss' (som blir en ganska kinky låttitel på svengelska). Emo-kåtheten blir aldrig så tydlig som i 'Sueisfine', där refrängen "behandlar" självmord - "Sue is fine / Sue is fine / Suicide / Suicide" - medan verserna beskriver sexuell åtrå - "Give me / Fuck / Come / Now you'll taste so good". Lite skruvat, men också precis så man vill ha sin deprimerade emo-rock. Kommer säkert återvända mer till mbv, men efter 2-3 lyssningar är det ändå någon slags tydlighet i låtarna som saknas, därför når det inte de riktigt höga betygen. Det kanske är svårt att få denna "tydlighet" då shoegaze och drömpop mer handlar om det mjuka, sammansmältande, men men. Bästa låt: You Never Should.

First half of the album didn’t really do much for me. Second half of the album I felt more connected. Think I will find more enjoyment out of it as I re listen.

I was not into MBV at all when younger though I’ve dipped into their more well known offerings. This hints but ultimately the singing is poor, the sound has not developed and so the songs are exposed.

-okay this is so interesting so far -that noise in the background is so ominous -its definitely a darker intense sound which i enjoy -i definitely like these songs but idk if i would listen to them again on my own -favorites: all i need, sueisfine -overall this album is really cool

I get it, but still... I don't get it.

Surprisingly enjoyable shoegaze album. Maybe because it pioneered the genre it did it well. I still wish the mix didn't have the vocals as quiet as they are compared to the instrumentals. Drums on "Feed Me With Your Kiss" are great.

Amazing album but it actually frazzled my brain while listening.

How does one define "calm before the storm" when the storm is already amongst us? After years of false starts, the crown jewel of the shoegaze genre finally found its footing and began the mythologization process with this monumental debut album. Sure it bookends perhaps one of the most important albums of its era but that doesn't mean it is devoid of memorable songs: Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside) is an effective opener, Lose My Breath beckons Bilinda Butcher's ever ethereal call and Feed Me With Your Kiss blasts through with the kind of intensity that one wished lasted longer. All in all, Isn't Anything remains effective as a listening experience nearly thirty-five years on and is a perfect introduction to the most important band in shoegaze. Favorites: Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside), Lose My Breath, Cupid Come, (When You Wake) You're Still in a Dream, Feed Me With Your Kiss, Sueisfine, Several Girls Galore, Nothing Much to Lose, I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It).

I think this is one of those albums you probably would have appreciated more if you'd heard it right when it came out. Years later, it reminds me of bands like Hüsker Du and Dinosaur Jr but probably got there first. They also have their own later all-time great album that came to overshadow this one. Still, a good listen. Agree with some comments that it's nice to hear the bass and drums come out more on this album than in their later work.

I'll start by saying that Shoegaze isn't my go to genre. I understand Bloody Valentine put this genre on the map. The album is far more enjoyable than a lot of the followers. It has a certain rawness and unlike many followers, it's not over-produced.

This sounds seems more raw and a bit less developed than the last MBV LP we received, which makes sense since it came out a few years earlier. Reminiscent of Sonic Youth, with some shorter less noise-oriented songs and some more textured ambient sounds that helped them earn the label of the "shoegaze blueprint".

I never could get into shoegaze, and MBV is probably the most notable purveyors of this genre. To me it's just too noisy and gimmicky and it wears on you fast. They improve a bit with their subsequent album Loveless (which is a fan favourite), but this album was not fun to listen to at all.

I’m not some depressed emo so that was painful to listen to

This is a solid debut from mbv. I've been a fan of there's for a long time now but definitely have spent more time listening to Loveless as that's really where they hit a peak. It was good dedicating some time listening to their first album again, as I don't remember the last time I listened to it in full. Going with a 4, just because they get even better as time goes on and this doesn't quite hit the high point that is Loveless. I'd like to preface this by stating that I am a HUGE fan of Loveless. It's one of my favourite albums and I consider it to be perfect. However, I've tried to get into Isn't Anything several times over the years and I just can't. Too abrasive, too meandering, too noisy. I understand why it's on the list, and it's interesting to see it as a precursor to Loveless. But I just find it difficult to listen to. Listening to Loveless is like listening to a dream; listening to Isn't Anything is like listening to a nightmare.

These songs make my head fuzzy. I don’t doubt their originality, but I will be doubting their range and innovation. Enjoyed most songs, although, they’re mainly the same. 3/5

Two shoegaze classics in a row for me, this one has a punkier edge, shorter songs and spikier, but still a great wall of noise.

I expected to mildly dislike this album based off of my experience with loveless and I was entirely right in that expectation. I usually like harsh music in this style (can’t think of an example rn, maybe early Radiohead or sonic youth) but something about shoegaze just doesn’t do it for me.

soft soothing vocals over noisy guitars with oodles of feedback (in a good way) and driving drums. catchy bass lines. there were a few clunkers, but overall, not a bad listening experience. highlights: “soft as snow (but warm inside)”, “cupid come”, “feed me with your kiss”.

Meh. This has it’s moments but as soon as it gets going, it gets lame.

I do enjoy shoegaze and also MBV but this is not their best album by a long shot, just feels like some songs are clunky and out of sync. And okay album but Loveless better be on here.

I'm very familiar with "Loveless" but never checked out the other albums by this band. This is their first one and it just kind of sounds like a bootleg Sonic Youth. Still good, but overshadowed into the nightmare dimension by their next album. I think it's pretty clear that they were still honing their craft here.

A turning point in Shoegaze history, combining elements of post-punk, dream pop, and noise rock to create a unique and mesmerizing sound. ”Isn’t Anything” show a lot of the elements that three years later would be perfected and become the band’s masterpiece in ”Loveless”. The defining feature of "Isn't Anything" is the band's use of distortion and feedback as an instrument in itself. The layers of guitar fuzz and the swirling sonic textures create a hypnotic and otherworldly atmosphere, immersing you in a sonic cocoon that is both beautiful and unsettling. This is exemplified in "Cupid Come", a hauntingly beautiful ballad that builds to a wall of sound. "Feed Me With Your Kiss" is another big highlight, a driving and intense track that features some of the band's most powerful guitar work. Also he album's closing track, "You Made Me Realise," featuring an extended outro that devolves into a cacophony of noise and exhilarating feedback. The vocal sets and arrangments were not as crisp as on their later works but nothing that disrupts the quality too much. It’s My Bloody Valentine’s least celebrated album, but it deserves it’s flowers for it’s revolutionary brick-laying approach.

There may be good music under all the noise.

A full tick below mbv and perhaps a few below Loveless (few records aren't), but it's still very good and interesting, if quite ragged and uneven – a band developing in real time and with more than few rough edges, it seems fair to say. "All I Need" and "Several Girls Galore" and most resonantly point to the future. "Nothing Much to Lose" suggests how they could have been a pretty decent conventional indie rock band. Best song "I Can See" was saved for last.

I hadn't heard of the genre "Shoegaze" before but I can definitively say it is not for me. This album is both too much sound-wise and too little vocally - muted singing and often off-key and weak. I could only handle about a minute or so of each song before having to skip to the next - I was viscerally cringing through the whole thing

I try not to say albums suck because I typically believe there is something in the music for someone but this album sucked. There wasn't anything good musically about it and it was just dissonant annoying sounds for over 30 minutes

There was truly nothing enjoyable about listening to this album. It’s very noisy, terrible production quality, and unpleasant in sound, instrumentation and vocal.

I thought this one was okay. A little above neutral all around, it made for solid background music. I like the singer but didn't care much for the guitar overall. I feel like they'd probably be a lot better at a live venue. No favorites, but no real dislikes. Nothing added to the list. I don't see myself seeking this out to listen again, but I wouldn't change it if it was already on. 5.8/10

Really enjoyed listening to this one. I can totally see how this album could have been an influence for a ton of other stuff (thinking of Smashing Pumpkins or Nirvana). My singular complaint is that the production quality is pretty shit/fuzzy (probably on purpose but I hate it) which definitely made me enjoy less. I think it would be a 5 if the recording was a little more clear, though Lose My Breath almost carried it for me.

I’ve never listened to a full album by this lot and it was really good. Felt like the building blocks to a lot of later music I have loved. Some songs were stronger than others but the grungy feel was just right for me

ive tried to listen to this for almost a week now, i think ive heard the first song 18 times and the last song once because i keep losing focus every time its veryu ninteresting but its not bad, if 1st song was better then it would be a 3

Classic MBV album. OK, Loveless is a bit better, while Isn't Anything is perhaps a bit more accessible. Both albums have a great sound and are very melodic, but it might take a while before one discovers the melodies. They're definitely not suited for the tight 1-album-per-day regime of the 1001albums generator, and due to this surely have a much lower rating than they should have.

Pretty good noise rock album. Especially in the second half it get a bit too noisy and dissonant for me, and there are a few song with pretty awful vocals. I slightly preferred this over Loveless, so I'll give four stars.

A couple of great songs, in particular (When you wake) You're still in a dream got me excited. Unfortunately too far drowned in sound elsewhere.

All time for many, just shy for me. There's a palpable difference in energy here compared to their seminal follow-up Loveless; the post-punk and no-wave influences are clear as day. I flat-out don't enjoy "Sueisfine." The songs don't venture past 4min except once, which matters to me when the layering of guitars evokes a dreamlike atmosphere for one to reside in. But ultimately, these are minor nitpicks. Still near-perfection.

It's funny how your tastes can change as you get older, I used to have loveless and I swear I used to enjoy listening to it. I can still understand why people enjoy it. But to be honest, I don't think it's dated that well. Just sounds like noise now.

Very underrated compared to its sequel, and I may actually prefer it. Melodies less suffocated so easier to pick apart. More lo-fi too which has its charms. Dig how lyrically they link the physical with divinely precious emotions.

I like this but it just seems like a underpowered rehearsal for Loveless which I think is a 5 star masterpiece. This is the birth of shoegaze. So it may be a bit unfair to compare but hey!

This was an interesting one. Every song blended in to each other, and usually that's a sign that it's a boring album to me. However I don't think that was the case with this one. It's a long winter and it's taking its toll on me mentally, and I think this long droning album was a way to just dissociate for a while. I never felt like I was trying to ignore the music though, it was just a nice background music for a not-so-great mental state. Felt insanely ahead of its time too - you could have told me it came out last week and I would have believed you. I don't think it would have resonated with me so well if I was feeling okay though. I actually liked this a lot. However, a big part of why I liked it is seeing an in-utero glimpse at the sounds that were fully birthed on Loveless. As a standalone experience I just don't think it holds quite as strongly, so I have have to give this a (very high) three stars.

This one really grew on me. I was ready to give it a 2 after the first song but it hooked me by track 3 with some of the punkier stuff. I’m still not totally sold on the sonic schmear that is shoegaze, but I think I get it now. Big broad brush strokes. I wish the vocals were higher in the mix but I know that’s their thing. Looking forward to digging into this more.

Étonnamment écoutable. Voire accrocheur, comme sur (when you wake up) you're still in a dream. Je pensais vraiment affronter un mur de bruit incompréhensible, et c'est en fait assez accessible sur beaucoup de titres, et le résultat global est très cool.

Very grating in places, and Kevin Shields can't sing, and it lacks the punch of Loveless. But it's still MBV and it's still head and shoulders above everything else at the time.

I thought this really picked up at the end until I realised the album was over and I was actually listening to Radiohead

you can hear bits of loveless but it wasn't there yet, both production and Writing wise.

There's something quite mesmerising about this album. It still sounds fresh and quite revolutionary as it must have done at the time. And whilst the accusation could be levelled that it is a little repetitive, there is something fascinating about the sound that has been crafted.

Meh. This BLOODY album was too raw, out of key and dissonant for me. It felt like they were trying to be spooky and I'm all for that, but it came off as contrived and fake. Meh. It was a double meh for me.

Noise. Mercifully short (like this review) although it didn't necessarily feel it with how many "songs" there were. Not a fan.

Fuzzy, dreamy and occasionally unsettling, but really creative. Plays in the same noisy pool with the likes of Sonic Youth and the Jesus & Mary Chain, but you can see they are also creating something new and intriguing here. A little goes a long way. Recognized the band name from my emo days in high school but never listened to them before. I love this pop-rock sound.

Sometimes I get why someone or some band has more than one album on the 1001 list (like Beatles or Bowie, for example), but in some situations is hard to get why "My Bloody Valentine" got three spots on it (please, be only 3). Ok, they are some ~different~ kinds of rock but let's agree that just a quick demonstration is enough to show precisely why/what/how they change with their music, and it's done. It's not necessary to listen to another half an hour of it. Well, after the first rage section, the album is actually better than the other ones that I got here ("Loveless" and "m.b.v"). At least it is a less annoying, more straightforward song. So I'll rate it with 1-star just for justice with my ears since I gave 2 for the others (worst) ones for some reason that just the past me will know (my comment on it was that the noise sound hypnotized me, and I can't use a better word).

Not for me

Not really for me. Didn't like the opener at all but there were a few songs that musically I liked but the drowning out the the vocals didn't work for me. I did like 'No More Sorry' though. Standout song I thought

Garage band album with no real melody. This is why I hate a majority of punk. Bands choose to be creative with there sound but forget the goal is to make music. So you used this cool new sounds to make a song, awesome. Just because I can be the first to shit into a microphone doesn’t mean it’s a good song.

One of the worst albums I’ve ever heard. Nails on a chalkboard. No clue what it is doing here.

HL: “You Never Should”, “Lose My Breath”, “All I Need”, “I Can’t See It” A while ago on Audacity, I played around with audio files and applied this effect called “Paulstretch”, where simple musical phrases would be blown out & stretched beyond recognition. That kinda gave me the same feeling shoegaze/MBV does. As I get into ‘23, time to acknowledge I do enjoy shoegaze quite a bit, though the indistinct, often abrasive effects can stress me out as often as they evoke a dreamlike atmosphere. Isn’t Anything doesn’t have as many layers as Loveless, but there’s moments of that peaceful/stressful feeling in tracks like “All I Need”, as well as more straightforward altrock in “Cupid Come”. Better than I thought it would be, but it seems pretty generic to me.

Volim noise pop, kad taj zvuk kao neke mašine probija kroz tvoje uho, ne sad baš probija, meni više prija. I onako lijep glas plus instrumental zajedno sa tim šredanjem, ne znam. Zna jako pasati, izaziva tu neku toplinu, ngl.

I'm guessing a lot of people hate this one, and honestly? That's fair. But I'd already heard albums like Vile Child by Milk Teeth and bands like Death Grips. I've heard weird, vaguely unsettling instrumentation and songs where voices get lost in a cacophony of slightly off-key, distorted noise. And I genuinely find it interesting. It feels like a commentary on the messiness of relationships. This sort of music is a tribute to people trying their best, to wandering paths, to moving forward despite uncertainty and confusion and pain. Can I understand the lyrics? Not really. Is that stopping me from enjoying it? Not at all. I'm not much of a lyrics person. I also find the melodies and chords quite soothing. This is really good background music. You can kind of just float along like you're in a dream. Oddly enough, the more I listen, the more I feel like paying too much attention to this music does it a disservice. It's not really meant to be logical or consistent. If I scrabble for handholds, I may come up empty-handed. But if I let the music come to me without expecting anything from it, it works. But when I take the time to focus on it, I have to wonder - how'd they do it? What were they DOING to get such a cavernous, reverberating...cloud of sound? Half the time you can't even tell what instrument it is. That's kind of amazing. Sound editing is an art. Whatever this is, I'm fascinated. It makes me feel like I'm falling into a bottomless pit full of dense, sunset-colored fog. I don't know what's going on here. But it's cool.

Nothing special. Not my cup of tea at all. The style and the sound doesn't do anything for me. It's not bad but I just think that this doesn't belong on the list of 1001 albums.

Can't really find a way to get into the post-punk/noise rock genre. Interesting soundscapes but i find it hard to listen to an entire album of it.

This album kind of washed over me, nothing positive or negative, I just didn't connect with it.

I find shoegaze to be fairly boring but I at least prefer this album to their supposed masterpiece "Loveless." I guess I should say I prefer them as an actual band rather than a monomaniacal vanity project. They at least have a slightly more dynamic sound and variety of emotion while in full band form. Considering the year, this was definitely ahead of its time, and I can hear how it influenced things to come.

Interesting almost lofi-shoegaze-y stuff. Kind of fun to listen to their earliest work, definitely pioneering for 1988 for sure. Not all of them do a ton for me but I respect the album as a whole.

I should like this band more than I do. The production just always sounds so muddled. Perhaps that's a feature and not a bug, because this was my favorite of all the Bloody Valentine albums I've been exposed to thus far.

I love the stuff MBV influenced, but find them a little hard to get into

I love mbv but I've only really ever listened to Loveless. This was definitely a more raw version of their sound but I found it to be a little more dynamic and interesting. There was more open space in the songs and the production made the instruments feel like they were alive! As if every track were breathing in and out. Truly incredible work, though not as polished as Loveless you can really see the foundation of the sound they would come to master on later releases.

This album gets better, moodier, harder, blissier, glizzier, fritzier as it goes along. I didn’t know this album as well as Loveless, but it kicks hard and doesn't stop. mbv rules and everyone should listen to mbv. stroll along with their distorted, fuzzes up guitars, their melodic and, at times, a-melodic singing. blast off! its time to gaze, press those pedals persons!

Sounded like early grunge to me, distorted guitars, hard to understand lyrics. It wasn't loud and energetic though, more like slow and depressed. The description says shoegazing, I guess that could describe it. It wasn't bad, I might give it another listen.

Interesting album, not as good as their follow up

Struggled to get this rating

"Isn't Anything" is a highly impactful debut where mbv (Shields & co.) were in the process of molding lo-fi indie into what would become shoegaze. The result is more straightforward and bare than "Loveless", but it's still am incredibly earnest record with Shields' trademark ethereal melodies. It's a great ride but still a notch below what was yet to come.

The debut album from mbv is not quite as strong as their later efforts, by there’s still plenty that works wonders and you can definitely see this as the pillar on which they build their future sound. Especially Shields’ amazing and truly innovative guitar and Butcher’s dreamy vocal are highlights while Ó Cíosóig’s energetic, erratic and snare heavy drumming (I mean, “Nothing Much To Lose”?!) provides just the right amount of insanity to the front persons’ ethereal tones. I played this at a level where my neighbors wouldn’t kill me. Maybe if I decided to fully turn up the volume, as is mvb etiquette, this would have received the last half star.

J'ai du interrompre mon écoute de cet album pour me rendre à un rendez-vous. A mon retour, j'ai relancé l'album comme toujours, et immédiatement cru que mon casque audio présentait un dysfonctionnement sonore. Et pourtant, il s'agissait bien des guitares saturées ignobles de my bloody valentine.

Good album

The first song didn't really capture me, but this album was a slow burn and by the end, I was utterly captivated. Love the soundscapes and even though it's not my favorite record from My Bloody Valentine, it's a hell of a strong debut!

I wanted to like it, but it dragged on and on and I was quite happy when it was over.

I forgot about this band and how much I like their mood. Smashing Pumpkins must have been influenced by them.

Meh. Guess I just don't like shoegaze.

Lika bra som loveless

I owned this back in the day, but know the brilliant Loveless much more. I was struck by how comparatively conventional it sounds, though doubt that was the case at the time. You can hear some of the lyrics! But it's all good stuff, best song: Several Girls Galore

It's not the MBV album I was expecting to come up, and I'm not sure what I think of it. It sounds like a band still figuring out their sound - the heavy-but-dreamy thing only works sporadically here. Some of the tracks are sonically interesting but actually quite hard to listen to/enjoy. 2.5

I didn't really care for this. Don't really see what the appeal is. Guess I'm glad I heard it and there may be one or two okay songs but will most certainly not return to this project.

I just don't get MBV...so sue me. I do prefer this to the utterly tuneless Loveless. At least there is some semblance of melody somewhere and you can sometimes something other than the bizarre guitar effects. 2.5 stars

No life is too short - got to song 2 on the album and gave up

Throughly enjoyed this record, even with all the hate I've heard for shoegaze. The record has a constant feeling of noise, almost makes the whole thing feel very blurry but the record still has its own distinct noise and sound. Very cool guitarwork and the vocals are just so fun. Although at points the blurry feeling does make it feel as if I'm just dissociating. Overall very cool sound and feeling. Favorite Track: Lose My Breath Least Favorite: Sueisfine

Grumpy Old Man review alert! Goodness. I understand they’re meant to be an influential band, but why would I want to listen to this album? One star up from the minimum for occasional moments of interesting sounds or melodies.

Shoegazing? Perfect description. I found the first few tracks dead boring. However when the band got really noisy, particularly on Feed Me With Your Kisses, it took me back to early Jesus & Mary Chain. Sometimes there’s a point to pure noise. These guys were obviously good at it. Will probably never listen to it again.

My Bloody Valentine are one of the loudest bands I have ever seen live, in the Sydney Refectory circa 1992 (on the Loveless tour). Part of the aesthetic is the ear-bleeding volume that these songs were designed to be played at. A friend snuck a portable cassette recorder in the venue to bootleg the gig. The volume blew out the limiters on the recorder, and, when we listened back afterwards, the tape was basically a 90 minute wash of white noise. So I love the noisiness, the wrongness of MBV. There are nice songs in there, but slathered in noise, mixed all upside down and drenched in reverb until the song almost disappears into the background. Their next album, Loveless, is even more extreme and is their real masterpiece. This record is an important and revolutionary step from being a relatively "normal" 80s indie band towards the monumental epic that is Loveless, but not quite fully given over to the weirdness of that record. I enjoy listening to this (although I suspect many/most wouldn't) but, at the end of the day, Loveless is the masterpiece. This was a breakthrough, inspiration and blueprint for the whole shoegaze genre, but MBV had further to go, out to an extreme where no-one has ever really managed to follow (not even the band themselves).

Was expecting a lot of doom and little fun - but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s doomy alright but so ese cent dunes and an overall pleasant listen.

Started off strong with Soft as Snow but kinda floundered around for the rest of the album.

I wasn't super into this but appreciated the creativity. This was an influential album in the shoegaze scene, which admittedly I know almost nothing about. Cool mix of noisy guitar textures with softer and more melodic vocals.

It was a good representation of the genre.

A whole lot of fuzzy noise. Sometimes sounds like you're peering into the gate of hell. Hard to distinguish between tracks. I can appreciate what they're doing but have to be in the right mood for it.

I think sometimes Shoegaze music gets a bad rap, sure some of it is intolerant and in cohesive, but there are some great bands and albums from this genre. I hadn't listened to much My Bloody Valentine until recently and though I'm not a fan, their debut full-length, Isn't Anything is a strong record. Underneath the distorted guitars (and noises!), is some nice layered guitar sounds and some melodic songs. I wasn't expecting I'd like this, but my eyes (and ears!) were opened up to some much needed album.

Experimental guitar based indie/rock. "Your Still In A Dream" and "Feed Me With Your Kiss" are high octane rockers with nifty harmonies, "Cupid Come" has a garage/psych feel, "Lose My Breath" is mellow (but spooky) whilst "No More Sorry" utilizes a mélange of backwards guitars. I can understand why this is classified Shoegaze as it does have the key elements (guitar noise, melodic vocals, minor key songs) of that genre. And there's some great song titles.

OK sounded Jesus and marychain kinda vibes. Like the distressed guitar and exhausted vocals.

Wasn't much

This was a tough one... I liked some tracks but not others. Sometimes it was really easy to listen to other times I wanted to turn it off. I find shoegaze such an interesting genre and when the album was vibing I vibed. This might be another one to check out when I'm in a different mood.

My favourite bits sounded like a noisier Stereolab, the rest just sounded noisy

Best Song: Lose My Breath. The vocals are really dreamy here, in a way that works for me. Worst Song: Feed My With Your Kiss. The mixing is really frustrating to listen to, with the vocals dialed way too quiet. It feels like you have to strain to hear them, but even then aren't well rewarded for the strain. Overall: Second album of theirs that I've had on this list and my reaction is about the same as the first. Very "one note", wherein after you've heard a song or two you've heard them all. A constant drone with little dynamic change.

A few tracks were ok, but this album was a slog to get through. Boring, discordant, and barely musical at some points.

Meh. Seemed kinda random to me and harsh. Recording quality also seemed a little poor.

In general a big fan of quiet/loud/quiet channelled through layers of distortion bands. Also really like Shields’ soundtrack work. This didn’t quite catch fire for me though.

This album really grew on me. I didn't like track 1 at all at first, but track 2 hooked me and the rest of the album clicked too. It always takes me awhile to get into some of these shoegaze bands (Medicine is still a group that I'm kind of bipolar on), but overall I liked this album a lot.

I'm definitely going to want to spend more time with this one. There's a wide variety of sounds on here and I have a feeling that some of these songs won't fully reveal themselves until a few listens in. A lot of tracks bury their melodies under heaps of reverb and fuzz, like "No More Sorry," which has a sad, Beatles-esque melody underneath layers of effects and noise. I've heard about My Bloody Valentine for a long time and now I see why. I can hear 1,000 indie artists from the last 20 years in these songs. They've clearly had a huge influence on a lot of bands. Highlights: "Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside)," "Feed Me With Your Kiss," "Nothing Much to Lose" (those machine gun drums are wild!)

It's a tight album. Surprisingly short at 38 minutes for 12 songs. One downside for me is that in the production the vocals are too low in volume. I know that that is sort of their sound (along with a lot of other bands with similar sounds), but I wish the vocals were just a little louder. "Loveless" is often seen as their magnum opus, and it's fun to hear their sound evolve from this record to that one. This album to me feels a little less polished and a little less developed. There's moments where I wonder about their thought process for writing a specific song or even the inclusion of a certain song on the album. The track "All I Need" comes to mind- it's sort of this trance-like interlude that lulls you before one of the more energetic tracks "Feed Me With Your Kiss". It's a typical musical/album-flow idea to have some give and take, but it does make me ponder their thought process when writing that. Did they consider the "sound" that they want to have as a band and include that trance-like track? Or did they just write songs and put them one after another and say "whatever"? There's a lot to consider! Overall, I liked it! I think it has a great raw sound.

More than halfway through this project, and easily my lowest rated genre is "shoegaze". Once I saw that this is a "seminal shoegaze album" I was truly ready to hate it. Imagine my surprise when I not only kind of liked it, but I started to vibe with it hard! I just floated on the fuzz and didn't want it to end.

A mesmerizing blur, this lot. You know, I was fully prepared to not like this LP, but for the life of me I don’t know why. The only real thing I know about My Bloody Valentine is just their name and genre. I can’t imagine where I picked up the pessimistic attitude. But the opening song got my attention, and in a positive, albeit perplexing way. I certainly wasn’t expecting the sound of woozy synthesizers, liquid swirling around a sledgehammer of an electric drum beat. The instrumental equivalent to operating with a chain saw. All this and lyrics poetically describing the various feelings associated with sex. Although set to an odd tone, to say the least, it was curiously not uninviting. Indeed, by the second song, I was hooked. ‘Lose My Breath’ was a lovely acoustic oddity of a tune- perhaps visualized as dead roses in a vase- the chords just dissonant enough to be effective, and pleasantly disorienting, too, like the feeling of spinning around a merry go round a couple of times. ‘Cupid Come’ shows the band’s creative way of moving a song along with a more freely fluid structure than the strict meter of conventional pop. And, following the song’s allowance to meander a bit, they concluded with a terrific ‘noise’ outro. The fourth track, ’(When You Wake) You’re Still Sleeping,’ though, is when things really got interesting, at least for this listener. Both the instruments and vocals blended together to the extent of being almost indistinguishable. A regular mashed potato of a mix. After a couple of minutes, this blur of sound puts one in a near meditative state. I’ll have to experiment with different settings, volumes, and such. Definitely a listen on headphones. The sixth track, ‘All I Need,’ took this mud to an even deeper place. The lyrics are of virtually no consequence, seeming only to serve the greater overall atmospheric vibe designed to touch places other than the rational mind. Even the beat was buried so far underneath things as to be almost non-existent! The following track, ‘Feed Me with Your Kiss,’ found the instruments easier to differentiate, but only relative to the prior noise. It also came with (this is going to sound weird) pleasantly off-key vocals and a punk/metal kind of guitar riff to frame the whole thing. ‘Several Girls Galore’ featured the first truly dissonant slide guitar solo I think I’ve ever heard, as well as another guitar strummed in an entirely different key than the slide; but, I liked it. The second to last number, ‘Nothing Much to Lose,’ offered a periodic and unusual 6/8 pairing with most of the song’s 4/4 time signature. Odd, for sure, but again, good. Finally, 'Isn’t Anything' closes with a relaxed ‘I Can See It (But I Cant’ Feel It)’ with an extended catchy chorus of ‘ooo-oos’ sung in harmony. Referred to as Shoegaze, lo-fi, dream pop, I feel obliged to add a new category: spectral rock (and, there is definitely enough rock to lift My Bloody Valentine out of the pop category.) After all, a ghost often seemingly appears as 'Isn’t Anything.' But there is most certainly something there, regardless, for those properly attuned.

Je suis relativement nouveau à My Bloody Valentine. J’aime beaucoup ce premier album. Je connaissais seulement Only Shallow de l’album Loveless. Les textures des guitares sont superbes. Le petit côté dissonant en trame de fond me plaît beaucoup. Je vais définitivement revenir régulièrement à cet album.

So much noise, but I'd have liked it if I'd heard ten years ago. Nowadays, it doesn't impress you so much. Though i like some songs: No More Sorry, Nothing Much To Lose and of course the last one I Can See It. Interesting for first learning about shoegaze but still there're better examples.

They hadn’t quite figured out what to do with the guitar effects and how to make the vocals match the shoegaze aesthetic. 6/10

Bracing and aggressive, well crafted and weirdly bouncy at times.

Pretty weird, pretty distorted, sort of edgy and dissonant. I liked it though. It hit the right spots. Like the other album by them, nothing that I can listen to for too long, but nice for a while.
