My Bloody Valentine, finally. They are band I least “get”. I’m shocked Isn’t Anything is even on here. I get that’s it was innovative, just ask Shields, he’ll tell you. It’s not bad, when they play actual songs it’s pretty decent, but walls of distorted toneless guitars doesn’t do it for me. There is nothing dynamic about most of this album. 5.6/10

This is a fantastic album. Beautiful and dreamy, but maybe a little more approachable than Loveless if that’s what you’re looking for.

The speaker was just playing meaningless static and terrible noises, so I checked the connections. Album was still playing, it's just that terrible.

Love MBV They don’t deserve 3 albums on the list

I've tried so many times with this band, and have come to appreciate the impossibly dense and unforgiving sound of Loveless, but this album just feels like a step along the way rather than essential listening. They're a jangly chamber-pop band with the reverb dialed up high going into the pre-amp to create a load of washed out overdrive that's a gossamer sheen over the songs, but they haven't really reached their final form yet, the maximalist take it to its logical conclusion pure barrage over overlayed fuzz and reverb and phaser and tremelo they'd get to a couple of years later. That said, there are a couple of pretty great songs on here that have incorporate the bright clean jangle to drive the scuzzy sounds along and even some pretty vocal melodies emerging from the fog. Favorites: All I need, You Should Never, Sueisfine

Sorry, I couldn't even finish the album. The noise and harmonies can be nice, but it was just not hitting me at all. Their next album is one of my all time favorites.

Before this, I was 95% sure mbv were Scottish - which would have given them 6 stars! The vocals are buried in the mix, the guitars are messed up and distorted, the bass is (often) fuzzy and almost out of time; but it all works flawlessly

I’ve really grown fond of shoegaze lately. Love this album, but its not quite as good as its successor.

Noise pop, shoegaze. You know, it's not far from what I expected as their first album, preceding Loveless. They just hadn't figured out the whole formula but there's a lot here to enjoy. It's raw and hypnotic. Very enjoyable album but sadly immensely overshadowed by what's to come. Still great! 4/5

I thought I wasn't enjoying this as much as the other album 'loveless'. But i've listened 4 times in a row while I work. Not as immediately infectious on the surface perhaps, but there's a lot going on.

First pass: unskilled noise. Then caught myself humming the melody once I’d left the room. Lo-fi, pre-grunge/post-punk are all turn-ons, but they never landed with me the way their contemporaries did. Maybe that’s on me. Other albums preferred (thank you Spotify shuffle) Currently a 2. If I listened 10 times over the next month likely turns into a 4...

3/10. Not my thing at all. Bored me and at times annoyed me. It’s palpable though and I could see it being for others.

Wow! This is awful stuff. Unorganized, cluttered, messy. Every song has really weird tempo issues with the singing and the music. The album is mixed terribly so the levels are all over the place. Really just annoying. 1/10

Interessant om deze plaat te horen net na hun monumentale sophomore album. Shoegaze kwam niet uit het niets, maar evolueerde langzaam vanuit post-punk, jangle pop en andere alternative rock stijlen. Dat is op dit album goed te horen, terwijl deze elementen al onder een dikke laag gaze en glide gitaren zijn verstopt op ''Loveless''. Een fascinerende luisterbeurt, die meer doet met de muziek-taxonomist in me dan de liefhebber. Een missing link in de evolutie van shoegaze, zo voelt deze plaat. Maar echt aangenaam, zoals de volwassen sound op het opvolgende album dat wel bij tijd en wijle was, zijn de meeste nummers niet. Het is die ongemakkelijke tussenvorm, te midden van een vis en een landdier. Zoek de coelacanth maar eens op, fascinerend wezen, maar verdient geen schoonheidsprijs. Waar deze vis op zoek is naar capabele poten om het land mee te koloniseren, is MBV bij dit album nog op zoek naar het juiste geluid, balancerend tussen lawaai en euforie, waar shoegaze zo in floreert. 6,5/10 Highlights: Lose My Breath You Never Should

Wat een toeval? Bestaat niet! Na Loveless meteen Isn't Anything erachteraan. Gister goed ingelezen over mbv dus kan 'm mooi plaatsen. Loveless is echt wel de Magnum opus. Mooi om te horen hoe op Isn't Anything het genre wordt ontwikkeld. hierop nog niet het unieke noise geluid. Dus ook een wat minder beoordeling. Maar vanwege de cult status en het belang voor toch een fantastisch genre, toch een mooie score. 7/10 Highlights Soft as Snow Ze gebruikten op deze plaat gewoon nog hoofdletters joh!

Isn’t Anything I’ve listened to Loveless a few times, but don’t think I’ve listened to this before. It has the elements you would expect, vaguely motorik drum patterns, lots of layers of noise and guitar and wonky vocals with barely discernible words. It’s also, as you would expect, one of those albums that makes sense the more you listen to it. Although the sounds and songs are broadly similar it's only after repeat listens that songs and nuances start to emerge, even if it never quite catches fire fully for me. Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside), I like the drums and bass and the slightly disconcerting inhalation/exhalation noise. Vocals aren’t necessarily his strong point, and there are some wonky edits, but I do like it, a bit of a wonky grower. Lose my Breath has a quite lovely dreamy feel, very atmospheric and a great track. Cupid Come Cupid Come is fine if a bit forgettable while (When You Wake) You’re Still in a Dream is good bit of noisy rock, the best of the uptempo more aggressive tracks. No More Sorry, the shimmeryness punctuated with the guitar back in the mix and the vocal, is very atmospheric and intriguing. Almost feels like it might turn into The Next Episode by Dre. All I Need I like for its layered atmosphere, and sense of melancholy hopelessness, it's a good one. Feed My Kiss and Sueisfine are quite Jesus and Mary Chain, with Sueisfine being a decent droning slightly bubblegum pop track and Feed My Kiss being a fun bit of thashy noise. Several Girls Galore, although I like the vocal and the buzzsaw guitar, the whole thing doesn’t quite come together like some other songs on here. You Never Should, I like this one, has a nice lo-fi pop vibe, almost feels like Ash, but with a guide vocal track. I quite like Nothing Much to Lose, it has a Teenage Fanclub vibe and the backing vocals are nice. I Can See it (But I Can’t Feel it) is nice, again one of the more atmospheric and dreamy feeling ones, but also not a great vocal. I think the more dreamy, slower tempo, more atmospheric songs like No More Sorry, Lose My Breath and All I Need work better than the faster noisier ones like Feed My Kiss and Sueisfine. As a full album does get better with more listens, and while I like a few of the songs and a lot of the atmospheres and noises, and in the right mood I’d listen again, it doesn’t quite fully grab me in the way Loveless does, which puts this solidly in the 3s ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 Playlist submission: Lose My Breath

So much random noise. Would have enjoyed it more with some additional editing.

More shoegaze garbage. Just noise and moaning. Had a hard time getting through this piece of shit. No redeeming qualities, and nothing that I could consider music on it at all. Favourite songs: Nothing Much to Lose Least favourite songs: Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside), No More Sorry.... And the rest of this dumpster fire of an album 1/5

One of my favourite records! It has a bit more raw energy then loveless and I always liked it a bit more.

Music to be played in a space with most echo you can find. I mean it’s not quite Loveless, but it’s still pretty good. The atmosphere is not as dreamy. Favorite songs were Lose My Breath, You’re Still In A Dream, Feed Me With Your Kiss, and You Never Should.

Unique, and probably mind blowing when it came out. Still holds up.

La verdad es que con este LP me llevé una sorpresa, llegándolo a disfrutar tanto o incluso más que su trabajo más conocido, "Loveless". Con composiciones pegajosas y pistas un poco más definidas que las paredes de sonido que la banda desarrollará en su siguiente LP, "Isn't Anything", se establece como un trabajo precursor para el Dreampop. Diría que este disco es casi tan importante como el Magnum Opus de la banda liderada por Kevin Shields.

Moody-ass precursor to shoe gaze. I cannot fathom giving this less than 4 because of how many bands I love that this clearly influenced. Did I enjoy it? Kinda.

A stepping stone, more than anything. There are shades of what MBV would become, but it can't shake the post-punk roots of shoegaze and fully become its own thing quite yet. Favorite track: "Lose My Breath"

I'm aware of this band's status as a paragon to indie rock nerds; however, the wider listening public seems to give mixed reviews. It wasn't as abrasive as I thought it would be. Do you get an extra star for that? Nah. Luckily it is short, concise, and to the point.

Shoegazy psychedelic indie pop. Not my usual thing but didn’t hate it. Didn’t love it either so middle of the road.

It's a good album to listen to, but I don't really get the oomph that I would have expected. Nothing really stands out.

A bit loud buzzy and blurry. Definitely the wall of sound for the most part with less musical definition and some softer generally incomprehensible lyrics. I think i'd be more into it with it getting into a more specific mood/vibe and then driving with that. The general sound is okay, but a bit boring. Cupid Come is the closest to traditional and what stands out for me.

In the past I've had the feeling I'm missing part of the MBV jigsaw. Like, I know they're doing something clever and worthy but I just don't quite understand it. Re-listening to this now goes a long way towards making me reassess that. I'm hearing the melodies more. Enjoying it more. I'm 30-odd years late to the party but feel like maybe I've almost cracked their code.

This may have been the most forgettable album I've listened to from the list. I genuinely couldn't remember what I had just heard two minutes after it was done playing. And just to be clear, no drugs were harmed during the filming of this review.

This is why this is a great project. Of course I'm "aware" of My Bloody Valentine, hugely influential cult band that help drive the shoegaze / baggy era of the late80s/early90s. However, I'd never really listened to them before. Is the experimental rock / post-punk my favourite genre? No. Did I still enjoy this? Yes. Will I be able to nod along more intelligently when my more hipster music friends wax lyrical about MBV? 100%.

Gosh I am sick of this group. I don’t find anything good about them and I just keep waiting for it to be over. I blanked out at some point and ignored it because it was just so bad sounding - both music and vocals together were just nails on a chalkboard.

I appreciate the originality for sure. Just the thought that 3 albums by my bloody valentine needed to be on this list approaches absurdity. That shouldn't necessarily be a factor in how I feel about this particular album, but I'm not sure all 3 add unique and independently influential creativity to the world. I'd have picked "Loveless" (or maybe this - their debut) and ended it. Even though I really don't like the music all that much. An album that's so goddamn frustratingly (intentionally???) poorly mixed as to almost sound mono for songs that meander - I'm not sure there are many albums I've ever liked with crappy sound like this. I 100% had better sounding infantile demos on my mono Panasonic tape recorder around the same time of this "studio recording." As for the writing itself, I usually found a part in each song where I would start to take interest but too often the songs stay in the same wavering mid-tempo slackerdom that while isn't nearly quite as abrasively-awful as e.g. Pavement it more frustrates me than anything. Like - wake the fk up already and play/sing like you give a shit. For influence and originality I give marks - it's definitely a full album experience for the overall sound/attitude rather than anything belonging on a mix tape. There were certainly some bands that grew something bigger and better out of this in the early 90s, so it's good to hear what could be a genesis of sorts, but on its own....I don't enjoy it and it got worse as it went on. Generous 2 here. 5/10 2 stars.

This often reminded me of that moment in a '70s TV drama when the detective, going undercover in a gritty hard rock club, realizes she's been slipped a mickey in her drink and is going to wake up after the commercial break tied to a chair in the bad guy's office. We realize it because the music goes distorted and wonky. This goes along with my experiences with the previous two ([why?]) my bloody valentine albums: that they are masters of creating a disconcerting, uncomfortable vibe with their music. Beyond that I never really was amazed by it.

I'm so glad our first mbv album was Loveless. I loved Loveless, actually found a lot of it quite pretty. Isn't Anything wasn't anything I could latch onto. Disappointed.

They are just not for me. Irritating music - I had high hopes with the intro track that maybe they'd be like early MSI or depeche mode but the songs were the wrong kind of noise rock and just incredibly irksome. Not enjoyable for me.

Everyone (rightfully) hypes up Loveless, but this album also deserves heaps and heaps of praise. Less shoegaze than what came after, it's really fun to see MBV in more of a traditional indie rock sphere. The AA cut of this vinyl is simply incredible as well.

I know I'm supposed to love everything about this but honestly it is completely mid. I even listened twice. Cupid Come and Several Girls Galore are cute but everything is OK. Good for mbv for making exploring new sounds and having the courage to go even further afield to define a completely new genre on the next record.

Not a massive shoe gazer so this was only okay for me. Second and louder half of the album was definitely better

Washed out, over-mixed, reverbed for the sake of using reverb effects. It sort of sounds like Queens of the Stoneage, but just not as good. “Oh,look, we invented a new genre of music”. Good for you, I guess.

ive already heard this album a few times but man it grows on me more and more with each listen. their usage of noise and melody is exactly what i love, reminds me a bit of psychocandy. its slightly worse than loveless but better than mbv. very strong 8/10 that might be raised to a 9/10. also seeing the bad rating this album has on this site has made me decide to ignore the ratings here from now on because wtf how is this a 2.73

J'ai bien aimé cet album, probablement plus que m b v. J'aimais bien l'aspect plus "cru" dû au fait que c'était leur premier album ; plus d'influences étaient audibles sur cet album que les deux autres. 8/10

I really don't like shoegaze music apparently. I didn't like Jesus and the Mary Chain when I had them, and I didn't like this. If this is the pinnacle of the genre, then I am not feeling great about it. I'll try one more time when my bloody valentine's Loveless album comes up, but yeaa, not my jam.

My Bloody Valentine debuted in the late 1980s with an album which had a totally revolutionary sound and style. This is a fabulous shoegaze album, though it is not as perfect as 'Loveless' which is one of the most brilliant albums - ever. I wish I could give it half a mark, 4.5 instead of just 4...

I want to like it but I... don't. It's like I felt like the sum was worse than the parts perhaps and it's just a lot of noise with the odd catchy riff. I'm a little familiar with MBV's next album after this one, so listening to this was a bit interesting. It's funny seeing all of the genres that Wikipedia classifies this album as, I think I would classify it as quiet, yet loud-post punk rock. Seriously, everything just kinda sounded subdued and suppressed throughout the album? Especially the vocals, but it didn't help that Spotify didn't have lyrics available during my time of listening. I guess I'm learning about "shoegazing" in real time. Not a terrible listen by any means just, a little unusual from what I'm used to.

While being innovative and inspiring, this album is a band still in a chrysalis of its own creation. Historians might say my bloody valentine isn't anything...yet. But in the moment of its release, I can only imagine how revelatory this sounded and felt. It must've felt like they were something already.

Decent foundational emo shoegaze album. Their next one, Loveless, is the band's masterpiece. MBV is also a stronger album than this one. Nothing stands out here, but it is an early representative of the shoegaze subgenre.

A bit sad I missed out on these guys at the time but I was into the Cocteaus and other stuff. I really like loveless and feel this is leading up to it. Don't get me wrong, it's still good if you like the genre but there are better examples.

"Isn't Anything" is the debut album by Irish-English band My Bloody Valentine. It is considered a pioneering work in the shoegaze genre. Original vocalist Dave Conway left the band and was replaced by vocalist and guitarist Belinda Butcher. Other band members included Kevin Shields (vocalist, guitarist), Colm Ó Cíosóig (drums) and Deb Googe (bass). The album reached #1 on the UK Independent charts and received rave critical reviews. "Soft as Snow (But Warm Inside)" starts it off with fast drums sounding like bullets and a buzzsaw distorted guitar. I'd guess Shields is singing about sex. The band goes with a straight-forward rock approach in "(When You Wake) You're Still a Dream." The drums are still fast and the guitar still distorted. The band really amps it up on the single "Feed Me With Kiss." Butcher and Shield on dual lead vocals. The vocals are buried with a wall of guitar sounds and drums. This song really reminded me of Sonic Youth in the "Goo" era and timewise this MBV album was prior. By "Sueisfine,"the band is on fire. It's another straight-forward rock song with dual lead vocals. The machine-like drums are even faster. The band used acoustic guitars on some earlier songs and they bring them back for the closer "I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It)." But, of course, there's distorted guitars in the background. This is a great album. It reminded me a lot of Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth. Incredibly, they would take a great leap forward on their next album leaving no remnants of comparisons to other bands. However, on this album, there are acoustic guitars and some straight rock songs. A few dreamy ones too. The music and the band seem to intensify as the album progresses. A high recommendation.

Shoegaze supremacy.

Very influential, the sound created is incredible and creates some really odd music, with the pop songwriting and melodies hidden under noise. Though it is great, I am not a fan of the production and it starts a little weak. Their next 2 albums though prove my bloody valentine was no happy accident and I can't wait to get those

I vividly remember this bands name, but the songs themselves are not that very memorable.

I wish I had discovered My Bloody Valentine in high school - they would have linked up nicely with my obsessions with Sonic Youth and Smashing Pumpkins (and are much better than some of the other bands I listened to). This might have been 5 stars if it had a true nostalgia factor for me, but it doesn’t. When You Wake, You’re Still in a Dream is such a great song.

My bloody madeleine. Just a small taste of those layers of guitar, and it's instant time travel. How they manage to make a sound so perfectly happy and sad and elusive is magic. This and Loveless are unparalleled.

Quiet album but it’s okay

Before the iconic album Loveless, there was Isn't Anything. Many of the same qualities on Loveless can be found on Isn't Anything, primarily the otherworldly guitar tones and dense waves of sound. Comparing the two, I actually prefer Isn't Anything for it's energy and similarities to Sonic Youth. I can respect that My Bloody Valentine found their own distinct sound with Loveless, but their debut is easily strong enough the justify their importance in music history.

A lot of people here are complaining about this having too much distortion. I am surprised it didn't have more, this album was a lot closer to the dreamy side of shoegaze than I expected. Anyways this album is great. I am definitely going to need to give this a couple more listens to fully appreciate it.

That started kind of OK before turning into utter bullshit

"Lose my breath" reminds me a lot of Stereolab and that's probably the nicest thing I've ever said about shoegaze, although the fact it feels like a 6 minute song despite only being 3½ is indicating that this might be a trek of an album. It's no secret that I massively dislike this genre of music, and this album is genuinely a chore. It is relentless, cacophonous and almost completely indistinct. At 38 minutes, it's 34 minutes too long. Sure, it was a bit of a new direction for music and clearly went on to influence some artists who did actually good stuff, but lordy it is not for me.

I never listened to this before. I was familiar with their next album, Loveless. I liked this a lot. A lot of good guitars. A bit of a wall of sound approach with all the noise and the vocals buried in the mix.

I don't really have much to say about this one. It's not bad. Not particularly great either though. I get that it was sort of an early pioneer of the shoegaze genre and I can definitely see how a lot of what came after followed suit. I like it, I wouldn't necessarily seek out anything else from them based on this record. It's simple enough to sort of fade into the backgroud if you're doing something else. But some great guitar sounds, solid musicianship, vocals are just kind of ok and tend to get lost in the mix. 3/5

Parts of this album reminded me of Harry Parch. This is not a good thing.

Highlight: All I Need. Before this project, I knew of My Bloody Valentine by name and the tracks Kevin Shields did on the Lost In Translation OST. Never heard this album, Loveless or mbv. Was expecting lots of feedback, attempts at building texture and a hypnotic approach. Something muffled and clear at the same time. And that's what I found. As debut studio albums go, it's pretty good. Shoegaze and its adjacent genres are an acquired taste. Pick apart the bits that make the whole here. If you don't finish the album liking it, you're more likely to finish appreciating that this band tried something different in 1988. Overall: 5/10

This is my second My Bloody Valentine appearance in the 1001 albums challenge and my first time listening to this album. I loved "Loveless" and am excited to dig into this today. This is like if you used several rounds of paint stripper to peel off all of the additional layers of fuzz and distortion and feedback off of Loveless. There are actual discernible words and instruments here that layout some (still very loud and distorted) pop punk tunes. It's cool, but not as engrossing as the sonic tidal wave of Loveless.

This is a solid 4, one of the few 4s I've given to an album I've never listened to before. I hate that I missed out on MBV when they first came out and I blame my parents or the government or somebody.

I'm not quite scraping the firmament in terms of my excitement over this album - but it's good! My only major criticism is the unvarying tempos, especially down the home stretch - the effect is mildly, pleasantly soporific. Still, big fuzzy guitars rarely sounded so majestic. Quality stuff!

There is some off-noise at times that is similar to a child’s musical toy that is running out of batteries. Dissonant in a bad way.

This album reminds me of when you're on country back roads and listening to the only non-conservative talk radio channel that comes in, which is 60% fuzz. There seems to be a decent band here, but I suppose the only reason it's in this list is because the producer decided to be innovative and cover up the band with the sound of forks in the garbage disposal. 2.

my bloody valentine is a band I always confuse with My Chemical Romance. I am aware the two bands are nothing alike. I'm not really into shoegaze, but I could appreciate the guitar work on this album.

It’s been a while since I’d listened to this one, and my first MBV since absolutely loathing mbv for this project. It’s rawer than either mbv or Loveless, more of a blueprint for what Shoegaze could be than a true Showgaze album, with much simpler, almost Punk sounds and structure. Honestly, I don’t think it ever gets better than Soft As Snow (But Warm Inside) and it’s not as good as Loveless. Loveless really is the mvp of mbv, it’s doing a lot of heavy lifting for the band’s legacy. But Isn’t Anything is still a good Indie Rock album, maybe not my favourite but still enjoyable

Not really my favorite genre of music, but I can get into it at times. The opening couple of tracks were a bit rough for me, but it did get better as it went on...though through that back part a lot of the songs sounded the same to me. 2.5, rounding to 2.

This was an interesting listen. One one hand it is completely unpolished and sounds akin to teenagers figuring it out with their first school band. Most of the tracks were 4-chord songs that were fairly uninteresting melodically. BUT There were a few tracks where you could tell they were really pushing to make a different sound, and those tracks were interesting! Not a huge fan of the mumble-lyrics but the whole album is a bit of a mood.

That sure was something. The four tracks from Cupid Come to All I Need = fantastic.

I really really enjoyed this - gave me those 1990-ish vibes in spades. I think 16 yr old me would have really loved this, and I’m channelling that energy haha It’s kind of Sonic Youth-ish without being so grating and annoying. It has it’s down moments for sure but track 4 and 7 esp both gave me a great ride. My hot tip would be to give it some volume - this is a real bummer if you listen on quiet mode. The comp to Jesus And Mary Chain is weird IMHO but I have only that 1 record of theirs for reference. Def hear the influence on Smashing Pumpkins and Hole. I bet Nirvana was listening to this also. All groundbreaking monuments require some prior training by its architect. *Isn't Anything* obviously foretells some of the noisy sonic pleasures of MBV's own *Loveless*, but it also anticipates the ones of many later acts, from Teenage Fanclub to Sebadoh, from Blonde Redhead to Beach House, up to the latest strands of shoegaze still heard in 2024. You can perceive whiffs from all those subsequent acts in quite a few moments in the album, and it's amazing how a lot of those songs could have been released yesterday, how they haven't aged a day. There are also subtle callbacks to earlier cutting-edge artists such as Cocteau Twins or even Nico. Yet everything in unmistakably marked by Kevin Shields' stamp--that trembling, fuzz-drenched, explosive guitar sound, for instance. If really I had to be picky, I perceive a dip in overall quality towards the start of side 2, with a few less convincing tracks that don't necessarily segue gracefully into one another. But the last two songs, "Nothing Much To Lose", and "I Can See It (But I Can't Feel It)" are a stellar way to cap things off, with a promise for later abrasive-yet-tender developments that My Bloody Valentine surely held--as everyone knows. 1988 was not a stellar year for music anyway. Too many acts and solo artists were still imprisoned in those dreadful eighties aesthetics, and if the underground was teeming with acts that would soon pave the way for the nineties, the important full-length releases made by some of those acts in that year were still far and between. There's Pixies' *Surfer Rosa*, Sonic Youth's *Daydream Nation*, maybe Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds's *Tender Prey*... and... that's it basically! At least if you don't count a fistful of other great albums in rap and a couple of other genres... Under that light, and given how groundbreaking *Isn't Anything* already was, I think it's not too risky to directly include it in a list of "keepers", in spite of a couple of lackluster moments in its tracklisting. 3.5/5 for the purposes of this list of "essential albums" (rounded up to four). Which translates to a 8.5/grade for more general purposes (5+3.5). La verdad es que no me llaman la atención. Sí al Shoegaze, que tantas cosas buenas nos ha dejado, pero no es este disco.

Love MBV but still very unfamiliar with this album. I know it's hugely rated but hasn't clicked with me in the past. This hazy afternoon after the night before was perfect for it though, the music just gently drifted into my skull. The first track is very Loveless-like, a pre-echo of things to come. But beyond that, the record continues to surprise. It's wonderful. All I Need lulls me into a dream, before the absolutely filthy bass line of Feed Me With Your Kiss smashes me out of it and gets me moving. Love the aspect that there's technically no guitar on this album, just the after effects. 35 years old, everyone. It's a classic, and one now that I've got an in, I'll be returning to with fervour.

Thoughts before listening: I know Loveless but have never heard anything else from MBV. Assuming they didn't have a major change in sound prior to that album, this should be alt rock with heavily distorted guitars that create a noisy, droney soundscape. MBV are known as originators of shoegaze so that's what I'm expecting here. Review: This album is okay, which is basically how I feel about Loveless as well. I really like some of their songs, but others just don't work for me. These guys are best when they crank the pace up and rock out. Otherwise the wall of distorted guitar sound just becomes an irritating drone. The best songs on this album are "Lose My Breath", "When You Wake You're Still in a Dream", "Feed Me With Your Kiss", "Sueisfine", "You Never Should", and "Nothing Much to Lose". All of these songs are fast paced, fully formed songs that remind me of Dinosaur Jr with fewer guitar solos. The rest of the songs on this album sound like noisy demos in need of major editing and production work. This album gets a 3 from me.

Every track on this record feels unfinished or unmastered. For example, the sound proposed in "You're Still in a Dream" is beautiful, but then the vocals seem not the blended in with the music. I understand this is on purpose. Still, it is a difficult idea to execute properly and this is not achieved in this album. The record starts in a softer tune and afterwards increases in head-bobbability. In neither half of the album could I enjoy a song properly. I will have to give it the lowest rating.

Impossible to view this as anything other than a warm up for "Loveless", really, but it's still a fascinating listen. I'd actually liken it to the novel version of "A Clockwork Orange", which is written in the inscrutable made up slang of the narrator - it's disorientating and confusing to begin with, but after you spend some time with it and internalize the vocabulary it starts to make glorious sense, and you even catch yourself thinking in nadsat! Similarly with this album - sounds like a mess to begin with, but once you're dialled in it all starts to make sense! Fave tracks - "Lose My Breath" and "Feed Me With Your Kiss"

MBV MBV MBV: I swear to god I am going to sacrifice my past self for slandering Loveless and do mbv the justice they deserve. This is the debut album of the shoegaze band and lord this was amazing. I thought I hated the sound but the satisfying guitar chords paired with that aura that makes you just zone out from life and have the illusion you are watching everything go past with no sense of time, an existential crisis in an album. From the start with the odd acoustic guitar sections but then going into the beautiful wall of sound. This album is a high four but just for the band, it's a five.

Not what I expected. Tracks blended together and provided a sort of reluctant melody that wasn't quite enough to get me humming along but was enough to keep me interested.

This is a new genre for me and a new band. The first song was not something I enjoyed at all. Hopefully things get better. The second song was much better. Things improved after the first song but overall this is kind of a mess. Very uninspired music and singing. More noise than music. Very much a meh album. Very interesting avantgarde rock. The album sound is ahead of it's time, not easily pinned down to the 80's, while having marked influences.

You definitely need to be in the mood for shoe gaze but apparently I was. Nothing stood out but it seemed to fit the feelings I was having at the time.

This album was not particularly good. It feels like it was the beginning of indie music. Unnecessarily loud and the lyrics are garbage. I have no desire to listen to it again. I am rounding up to a 2.

Because of their in-studio technical prowess and experimentation, My Bloody Valentine tends to get a pass on their songwriting abilities. As a result, their records often feel like dissertations, rather than actual enjoyable album experiences. Isn’t Anything is made a little more enjoyable by the fact that they were pretty clearly trying to be Dinosaur Jr and/or Sonic Youth on a few tracks. Ultimately, that makes for a lopsided album: The more “traditional” songs end up interspersed with sonic experiments that succeed in varying degrees.

Not really my kind of music, even though it came out right when I was deciding exactly what my kind of music was. It just seems like noise and one of those noises is vocals with impossible-to-discern lyrics, which drives me nuts in ANY medium. That all said, I listened to the whole thing and didn't hate it. So there's that.

I listened to Loveless by My Bloody Valentine around a year ago because I heard it was great, and I found it to be pretty awful. You can imagine the sigh I made when I was generated this today, but here we are. Hopefully this will click a little better, but my hopes aren’t high. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Feed Me With Your Kiss Honestly, I expected this to be worse than it was. I’m still not exactly a fan, but there were a fair few bits in this that had me hooked. It still does little a little too much into noise for my taste, but there was certainly some stuff to enjoy here. I just wish it was a bit more listenable. Is that too much to ask of music?

I really love shoegaze so how can I not give this album a 5? I still haven't heard a band that really does what MBV does. This is a lot more lofi and raw than Loveless but the songs and energy are just as vital.

Much more varied and confident than I thought it would be. It’s interesting too because you can hear so many bands mbv influenced in this album—particularly Pavement, Sonic Youth, Jawbreaker, and the Smashing Pumpkins. YMMV though because the production value is ah, not great. Certainly not at the level of those that followed in their footsteps. I appreciated how sonically diverse this album was—the feel may be similar but the songs don’t all sound the same. That being said, it’s abrasive enough to be difficult for everyday listening. It’s hard to think of who they sound like. Definitely merits revisiting, just maybe not today.

It's helpful for me to remember the year in which this album was released. Listening to it now, it sounds so much like tons of other music in the past 30 or so years, but when I place it in the context of the late 80s, I get how this must have stood out. It gets a little overly distorted for my ears -- the harmonies get mushed together with that much overdrive or distortion -- but I get that's part of the style they were going for.

MBV were doing more interesting stuff than other Indie bands at the time but this album isnt the optimal example of that

I've become quite partial to a bit of shoe-gaze so I wasn't expecting this tuneless, mumbling mess. Musically it lost me in the first 5 seconds & never got me back. And I have no clue as to it's lyrical merit - passing such judgement requires the lyrics to be audible.

I continue to fail to see the appeal of this band. For a solid 75% of this album, it sounds like the band and the vocalist are working off of different set lists. The vocals just... don't match the music rhythmically OR melodically. Sometimes, they don't even seem to be in the same key. Why?! Why do people fawn over this crap?

2/5. Yup shoegaze, I mean yeah it's got some fun choices for wall of noise but I guess it's not for me? Definitely a game changer in the field of music, I just don't know if that's the direction I want to go right now. Maybe I'll appreciate it later, but I'll respect it from over here for now. Not terrible, so not a 1, does have some choice instrumentation that goes hard.
