Reviews (page 15 of 15)

I don’t know if it’s just the two albums of his that I have gotten on here, or just his music in general, but from what I have heard Bowie is super overrated! I mean he has a few good songs here and there, but I find it difficult to get through a full album of his. His music isn’t the worst thing in the world, nothing I have heard from him is a 1/5, but I just don’t get the hype at all. His last album I was given on here was very average, a 3/5. This one was worse: 2/5.

The album has uncommon song texts. The voice in the few traсks a bit annoying, but in the other is delighted.

Not the best Bowie.

This is the second time I've done a listen through of this album and I'm starting to glean the impressive collection of songs for what it is. The lyrics are foreboding and metaphorical for bodies own life and his influences on love. I'm not in love with the album, but I appreciate it for what it is. Favorite Song: Blackstar

Ottimo testamento.

Heard quite a bit of Bowie on this project so far and enjoyed them all. This is the first one however that I have loved. Lyrically interesting and emotionally affecting as he stares down death in his idiosyncratic way.

Not for me. Starts with a weird long song that doesn't do anything for me and gets worse. Just stressful to listen to.

Already listened to it once when I started this project with another group, I ain't listening again.

Third time unlucky for Bowie. Better than the others, some nice musical bit spoiled by Bowie's lyrics. Best song: Lazarus.

Not as enjoyable as I hoped. I'm pretty fringe on art pop and this was definitely leaning heavily into jazzy art pop. Not my favorite of his work either. I may like Bowie but I do not understand this albums inclusion.

2/5 Too bad, I expected something better

Nope. I never got the whole Bowie thing. I find most of his stuff dreary and droning. I quite literally fell asleep trying to listen to this. There are some interesting song ideas here, I guess, but then Bowie drones all over them. I still don't get the Bowie thing.

Not a bowie fan. Still not a bowie fan

It seems that I'm not a fan of David Bowie, but initially I had thought the same for radiohead, which is not exactly true, therefore I'll remain

Particularly haunting now, knowing he was creating This while dying.

this is actually really good. Also insane that it was released less than a year before his death, especially because a "blackstar" is a star that is collapsing infinitely into oblivion. Bowie certainly meant this to be his "parting gift" to music, but i doubt he thought it would come that soon.

One or two songs interested me somewhat but outside of those I found it boring, this side of Bowie I'm not that fussed about.

I really like this album. 1st song is ace. Rest of the album is good.

Bowi's final album is fantastic. RIP Jazzy and eclectic.

Started off hating this album, but it really grew on me. If I eliminate the pretentious, overly artsy first track, it's a great album.

I couldn't make it past the 2nd song (which sounded oddly similar to the old SNL band opening number)---I never understood the obsession people had/have with Bowie.

Ehhh. Not sure it really makes an impact for me. Not in this context

Good, but not entirely my vibe

Very intense but magnificent

No me gustó

fantastic album

Marvellous!!

Bowie's last is one of his best

Schon sher

Loved this! Bowie is the best.

Pretty awesome album my attention was on most of the songs

Bit trippy with the first track being almost 10 minutes. Some good vibes.

Interesting and off the wall. Only truly loved 2 songs, the rest is too experimental.

Love the first track

Great, unusual album. The title song Blackstar is my favorite.

Love Bowie but this was just too depressing for me!

How many Bowie Albums are on this list, you would think that hes the greatest singer of all time........ really?!?! I continue to struggle this ... apparent brilliance.

Not as good as some of the other Bowie stuff, but I liked it.

Not a big fan of the album, but quite poignant as Bowie wrote this while he was dying

Less a swan song and more a swan opera. But it's not maudlin. It's reflective of a life being one of the defining voices in both the art and music of the 20th century. It's a man coming to terms with his legacy. A star slowly fading but still there in the sky, glimmering. You can't quite see it. But it's in heaven. It can be a hard listen, but an important one.

Not Bowie's best - and it kind of sucks to have to say that on his heartfelt final album before his death. Artsy and interesting at times, but not something that lends itself to being played often.

I like this album a lot better than I expected to. It was far more entertaining than the Board of Canada album, while kind of treading similar water. The general atmosphere was just great.

A magnificent album, modern, forward-thinking, deep. Long live Bowie.

Final Bowie. Ethereal, mournful Bowie. Cryptic and theatrical Bowie. 😢 Fave track - "'Tis a Pity She Was a Whore"

Pseudo-Prog. Takes normal pop and makes it harmonically weird, but inconsequential. And the lyrics are plain weird, not even artistically so.

Good. A smidgen overrated in Bowie's discography. 7/10

Songs: Dollar Days, Blackstar, Lazarus

I really wanted to like this album, especially as it was his last (?), but I didn't really. I found it too repetitive and just...weird.

trippy, outside expectations even for bowie

Not a fan

It’s weird that it’s been five years already. I’ve never really listened to this one, so far it’s melancholic but 100% Bowie. He knew he was close to the end.

Fantastic album. Bowie was experimenting and keeping his sound fresh and relevant to the very end.

Bowie is a classic, this one is a bit more transcendent and a bit morose than previous albums.

eccentric!

Such a cool album

I know I'm supposed to like this but there's only one song on it that's ok

I hadn't listened to this since it was released. Great to relisten. It's absolutely fantastic, otherworldly and strange - pure Bowie. And, with some distance from the context surrounding it, namely Bowie's death, one can better appreciate it as a fine album in it's own right, regardless of it being his swansong.

Excellent even in his dying days.

This one is more 'jazzy' and eclectic than previous Bowie albums. It still retains the iconic Bowie sound through his vocals. An interesting album and tragic that it was his last. Not the best album he produced but definitely worth the listen.

Songs long and voice not my favorite but lyrics were cool

Estranho, o melho tipo de estranho

Production: 16/20 Songwriting: 18/20 Innovation: 19/20 Presence of pure bangers: 15/20 Emotional response: 17/20 =85 Anything between 80 and 100 is five stars.

Looking forward to the follow up from him

I never listened to this when it came out. It's super interesting.

I find this to be an exceptionally bold and daring album for being so late in his career. Perhaps this was partially fueled by his awareness of his own mortality at that point. The album is of course irrevocably tied to his death and one cannot help but hear him grappling with his knowledge of this throughout. I remember when first listening to this album upon it's release, it was quite an emotional experience with that in mind. A rare album where an artist was able to lucidly capture this very real sense of mortality and make it sound somehow fresh and vital. Bowie made his life into art from beginning to end.

Surprisingly experimental in some songs, considering this was his last album. Blackstar is a masterpiece. Lazarus is my 2nd favorite but a bit more straight-forward, I do like the transition around the lyrics "By the time I got to New York". Girl Loves Me is good too. Sue is the only track I feel isn't as good as the rest of them, the guitar just feels a bit cheesy, like it's trying to be heavy but it falls flat for me. But, for the real gems on this album, it pushes it up to 4.

Favorites: All David Bowie's last album before his death. He wanted to get as far away from rock and roll as he could, citing Kendrick Lamar's approach to the genre of hip hop on TPAB as inspiration. Features a mix of various styles of jazz, art rock, and experimental rock. Themes of a man wrestling with his mortality, as he made this album while in the final stages of his battle with liver cancer.

I'm sorry Bowie...

A special album as it is a sort of swan song of David Bowie. Although I will remember him more by other songs he has made.

3/5 jord 4/5 rob

Listened to this album a lot. Instant classic. "I was looking for your ass" 5 stars

Very jazzy. His falsetto in 'Tis a Pity She Was a Whore was a little grating. My favorite parts of the album were the jazzy bits.

Amazing. It sounds so sad. I will listen to this one again.

4 Sterne.

Not new to me. Posthumously released, super moody. Bowie’s voice is beautiful and haunting.

bowie é bom, precisamos ouvir mais. always.

David Bowie delivers again, this was utterly haunting and danced around into at times what felt like 11 different genres. Just experiment after experiment, with every track bringing something unique and I really appreciated it all. RIP Bowie.

Need to get into more Bowie

A fitting final album for Bowie.

Not my favorite Bowie album, but crazy to imagine that this was released just before his death..

Well, it was certainly an interesting album. Not quite sold on Bowie yet, but this looks promising.

Lots of artists talk about death. None have presented their journey, emotions, or physical experiences, as honestly and vividly as Bowie did while the horizon approached ever closer.

As with other Bowie stuff, I like it, but don't love it. Would definitely listen to it again, but wouldn't seek it out. Good enough for 3 stars, though.

Have always loved this album. Sad and some of it haunting.

bowie released an album in 2016? RIP Not my fav, or top 3

Track two- tis a pity she was a whore XD

Bowie's last album as he faces death. He put his parting thoughts into the imagery.

Very subdued mellow scary dark sullen room vibes; nice progression from beginning to end

Bowie has a grating and unpleasant voice. The songs generally are uninteresting or unpleasant to listen to, often both.

Art rock, jazz, eksperimenterende, lange numre

A haunting vision of mortality. This is one of those albums that gets better and better with repeated listens. Best track: I Can't Give Everything Away

Very abstract rock, did not like it at all

There is something powerful about an artist's last record - especially when it is released so close to their final moments. This album is no exception. I really really liked this. Bowie is an artist.

Zero bad tracks - Lazarus and I Can't Give Everything Away are tops

this is probably great but i can't really tell tbh

What is there to say about this project? It's one of the best swansongs in popular music, and is a personal favorite on top of being my de facto introduction to Bowie qua Bowie (the absolute introduction was the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, but that was Ziggy). It's jazzy without being incomprehensible, but also avoids going pop: This thing is incredibly depressing. Repeated listens have only revealed more depth. As a musical idea, it's probably slightly less than perfect. I believe, though, that it's better as an album for it: It's only fitting that Bowie went out stretching a bit. And while we're talking about perfection, Lazarus is without question a perfect song.

Cancer, very sad.

Some of it was good, but ohhhh it was not good music for my brain while not exactly sober

YEP PRETTY GOATED - DIA

What a legacy from a genius artist... the atmosphere of this album is haunting but beautiful!
