God this is boring
I typically like Joni Mitchell. Wasn't my favorite, but had some okay tracks.
I love the sort of free-flowing inventiveness of the song structure and the arrangements here, but none of it ever sinks in for me.
Mitchell is a master and this is a masterpiece

Fascinating! This Joni Mitchell could have been a boring coffeehouse singer-songwriter, but this is avant-garde coffeehouse. I love the jungle line! It reminds me of Ween. Way ahead of its time and stretching the power of the moog. Sweet bird, shadows and light, and the opening track "France" are also great. I give it 8/10 - a great album and I'm glad I listened.
Beautiful Joni vocals and grown up music. Not as catchy as earlier albums, but much more accessible than later ones.
I've said before that those magic moments of synthesis between voice, music and word are probably the best explanation of my own personal music taste (examples from this project so far are Talk Talk's masterful colour of spring, Springsteen's extended numbers from Darkness on the Edge of Town and most surprisingly some of the shoegaze stuff from Ride) Well, this album is the antithesis of all that. The songs are so loose and disparate with Mitchell attempting to bridge the gap by singing a version of a melody. This style has unfortunately paved the way for a whole genre of jazz singers to follow suit. It's not like I even dislike Joni Mitchell, I'm fairly familiar with her more commercial compositions from the early 70's and very much enjoy the album 'Blue' , but she has in recent years come out with an anti Dylan agenda accusing him of misogyny and plagiarism despite performing regularly with him over the years. (search YouTube for her backstage duet of 'Coyote' with Dylan at a Rolling Thunder gig, sublime)
I definitely see why this alienated Joni Mitchell fans of the time. It was a little more artsy, a little more jazzy, a little more psychedelic than her other musical endeavors. However, I thought it was an experiment that yeilded a great end product! Maybe not the instant classic that Blue was, but a great album of its own; I want more time to digest it.

Nunca había escuchado nada de Joni, pero sí la tenía presente como una figura femenina importante de la música de su época. igual y por no tener más referencias de ella no tengo claro el impacto o la razón de su inclusión en esta lista (?)

Sets it's stall out in the first 20 seconds: "Downtown My darling dime store thief In the War of Independence Rock 'n' roll rang sweet as victory" Lyrically very striking, musiclly interesting. Liked it a lot. Feels like it would have more to give on repeat listens. 4/5

Me pareció sonicamente mucho más llamativo que el anterior qie escuchamos de ella. A pesar de que son canciones con tonos que usualmente no me interesan, la verdad sí disfruté mucho este disco, melancolía y dulzura. Canciones favs: Harry's house y shadows and light. Mood: estoy muriendo?
Joni knocks it out of the park on this one. Summer feels with an excellent blend of nostalgia, melancholy, and ambience.
Pretty remarkable, even if Joni Mitchell has a voice that I seriously cannot get along with. The craft and talent are apparent but, man, that voice...
“The Hissing of Summer Lawns” by Joni Mitchell (1975) Lyrics. Lyrics. Lyrics. To appreciate this album is to immerse oneself in the Lyrics. Here Joni Mitchell demonstrates her superlatively intelligent transformation of serious thoughts and feelings into meaningful sound. Her poetry is smart without being pretentiously erudite. She employs highly referential subject matter in service to exquisitely feminine introspection and evocation. Each line is vivid. Each phrase punctuated by perfectly placed consonants, begging a listener like me to shut down my interior (male) voice and surrender my attention to her. Joni Mitchell could get me to do anything. If I were so fortunate as to take her out on a date, my first words to her would be “Conquer me, Scarlett.” Musically, this is a very well produced album, well executed and recorded, and very appealing (if the listener has developed a taste for both jazz and folk—in that order). Dispensing with standard structures and melodic conventions, she walks her own path. Glad to follow. 4/5
It's a surprising album with some very interesting songs but at the same time, some songs are very boring. I liked to listen to it, but it's not very probable that it will happen again, even with those good songs at the first part of the album. The art cover is very beautiful.

Estoy convencido de que Joni Mitchell es poeta, jaja. Ya había dicho creo que su voz me resulta agradable, relajante y aquí pasa lo mismo, si bien a diferencia del Court and Spark, acá hay más relajo respecto a las letras y sobre todo las melodías. Se nota, pues, como este intento de jazz fusionado con lo pop, lo folk y el resultado me gusta. De repente parece poesía musicalizada, pero que no todo lo sea es lo que me convence. Mis canciones favoritas fueron "The Jungle Line" y "Harry's House / Centerpiece", la primera por esos tamborcitos y todo el tono (que me enteré de que son un sample y es el primer sample reconocido en música "comercial") y la segunda por su composición y además la manera en que inserta "Centerpiece". En sí, todas me gustaron, es un bonito recorrido y a "The Boho Dance" también le tengo cariño porque Björk la covereó. Btw, "The Jungle Line" suena de repente a "Earth Intruders" en sus principios y también entiendo cada vez más que a Lana del Rey le guste Joni. 9/10

El segundo disco que oigo de esta lista de Joni Mitchell. La primera canción me ha vuelto a recordas a los Carpenters y es bastante buena: "In France they kiss on main street". Luego viene "The jungle line" con samples de percusión africana antes de que Paul Simon hiciera estas cosas y con un sonido que me recuerda más a Björk que al folk, sorprendente para un disco de 1975.
NO es el Blue, pero es un disco mayúsculo

Some interesting moments and lyrics, but give me “Blue” over this any and every day of the week, please. Sad/weird fact: Joni Mitchell has Morgellon’s Disease which makes you feel like there are literal bugs crawling under your skin. Sounds like a Cronenberg movie.
As mentioned, the Jungle song was outrageously annoying but there were some gems on here. Not my fave JM album but overall enjoyable
¿Cuánto Joni Mitchell va a haber? No es queja, quizá solo demuestra un hueco enorme que tenía en mi conocimiento de música popular. Sigue siendo un descubrimiento muy interesante, de verdad que es una artista completa en todos los aspectos, las letras excelentes... pero aquí tuvimos un problema ella y yo... Esa primera canción... y algunas otras del disco; todas esas que suenan a smooth jazz-rock... suenan horribles y se quedan al nivel de música de huevísima de CD de compilación del Starbucks. Las otras canciones de verdad salvan al disco; se sienten por ahí algunos ritmos tipo world music que pegan muy bien así como algunas canciones de pop casi minimalista que inmediatamente suenan a algo que seguramente en su momento influenció a alguien como Björk o algo como Shadows In Light que juega por ahí a experimentar un poco con sonidos de rock progresivo. Estas canciones de verdad salvan y elevan al disco muchísimo, si todo hubiera sido experimentando con ritmos de ese tipo el disco hubiera sido un 4 o 4.5 fácil; por otro lado si todo hubiera sido en la línea en la que empieza, a pesar de lo bien escritas que tienen sus letras no hubiera llegado quizá ni a las 2 estrellas, de verdad así de diametral se siente la calidad musical por esos fondos sosos de jazz.
I have to agree with the initial reviews of the album. The lyrics are great, the music is mostly bad to terrible. I liked a few songs - don't interrupt the sorrow, the title track, and shadows and light. A few were literally unlistenable (the Jungle Line).
Production value was better. Still don't care for the music. Joni Mitchell does not speak to me.
I never listened to Joni Mitchell at all until this album, and while it was a great album, it just didn't resonate with me. I even listened to this twice at work, and i still couldn't feel this...if it makes sense. " Don't Interrupt The Sorrow" was definitely the best song of the album, which was incredibly well done, and i still give this high marks, maybe i'm just crazy, or the next listen-to will change things for me.
There is no variety in this album, all the songs sound the same. It's not horrible but its not great. 2/5

Pretty good joni album, but didn’t like all the songs
I know she is a musical genius, but I have a hard time connecting with most of her music for some reason. There are some moments of this album that just wowed me but overall it's still not for me. 3 stars.

I mean, Joni Mitchell is classic, and surprisingly, I’d never actually listened to one of her albums. I enjoyed this one and would look for more of her in the future.

Well this was an interesting listen. Definitely an experimental time, Joni must have been influenced by synthesizers, jazz and progressive rock as much as her previous style. There are definitely some words and lyrics which I didn't understand. This could be as much the way she chooses to sing them as much as the words themselves. I feel like I'm missing something in the lyrics, it could be the age of the album. It could be the way she sings. Perhaps someone more familiar with both the 1970s and Joni would know. Overall, I enjoyed it and would probably listen again. 7/10
The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Joni Mitchell. A very obscure poem based jazz rock fusion album. I can feel the connection between this album and artists like Bjork or even Portishead altho THoSL is absolutely reflective of the time it was recorded. With flowy orchestral sweeps under spacey synths this music is caught between pop and far out expressionism. The parts I enjoyed were over shadowed by the majority of music that possibly just went over my head. Maybe I wasn't high enough. 2/5
Como ya había comentado en sus otros 2 discos (que han salido hasta ahora, al menos), Joni Mitchel tiene un timbre y un estilo vocal muy agradables, y creo que su talento fue muy subestimado... ...pero es que de verdad, la música que escoge no le ayuda NADA. Es como una mezcla de folk con jazz rara. Este disco me pareció muy, muy aburrido.
Me gustó más que los anteriores. Su timbre es muy agradable pero siento que va de lo mismo en cada disco
Lamento no poder entrarle a este disco sin tener el peso de haber oído ya los demás, porque ahora me suena como más de lo mismo, y quizá sin conocer los otros, este disco me parecería mejor. La voz que usa en "Harry's House / Centerpiece" y los arreglos de piano de la canción hacen que el disco valga la pena y en general su entrada a más jazz lo hacen un disco bonito, como para escuchar en un día de flojera y melancolía.
Approaching a masterpiece, this album is quite an experience! Much more sonically diverse than her other stuff I've heard, and the lyrics are so profound. Way to kill it again, Joni!

A mixing of Folk, Jazz, and Pop. The second half the album is stronger than the first. Sweet Bird, and The Boho Dance are the standout tracks.
