As silly as it sounds, Matt Groening was right, it does take multiple listens until it just clicks. I've listened to this a bunch over the years and it's a favorite now. Loved reading all the takes from other unsuspecting listeners, they are not wrong lol.

It was ok. I listened to it yesterday and really cant recall a single thing about it so that should say a lot. I would have remembered if it was bad though.
I've been on a run of classics I've already am familiar with or stuff I'm not interested in. This feels like the first genuine discovery in a while. Just awesome.
Sometimes my music streaming app will automatically replay the album once its finished and i was already halfway through the second playthrough when I realized I had already listened to the full album. Really not that bad but that's definitely not a good sign. Wish i could give it a 2 and a half but it just feels off giving it a 2 so imma be generous and go with 3.
Classic punk. Fast, aggressive but still with some tongue-in-cheek satire.
1-Star Albums (29)
All Ratings
Solid 80s album with a hanful of pretty great hits.
Stone cold classic
Fine album, though not my preferred Dylan.
Love me some Marc Bolan
King shit
Good but why is like 90% of these recs post 1990? Gimme the old stuff.
As a resident of NJ I am legally obligated to rate anything by The Boss a 4 or higher, not that it isnt deserved.
This the shit im looking for. Cool stuff ive never heard of.
I checked "history" and this and the previous album definitely were never suggested to me. Wtf dont try to hold out on me.
You: based on your ratings '90s electronica is your least favorite genre so far. Also you: here's more '90s electronica.
Such a weird and talented group made up of a bunch of dorks. Love it.
Solid album by that band where you know one song but that one song isnt on this album.
Classic punk. Fast, aggressive but still with some tongue-in-cheek satire.
Listened to Billy Joel's Greatest Hits endlessly on car trips as a kid so I'm familiar with 90% of these songs but whenever one comes on I've never heard I'm always like "wtf is this?"
Pre-tay good.
Honestly prefer his work as Lucky on King of the Hill
I wish i could go half stars cuz this is a 2.5 which is right in the middle. Not good or bad, white lady folksy shit just not my jam.
This dude just names is albums after his regular ass first name and followed by a number plus he scats. Worth a listen just for that.
Classic
Guitar God
Not a huge Simon fan and this isnt even my preferred album but still good.
The cool shit
Solid alt rock.
Pretty fun album from someone who i only know about because of a cool video and a song that some nerd made a dance routine to. This album has neither of those songs but its good.
Great holiday album. I feel like i've heard all these song before just from watching Home Alone and Home Alone 2.
What a weird album. Good though
And here we go, the first problematic artist to show up on here and most certainly wont be the last. Sad part is i used to love this album but now its kinda hard to listen to.
Weird shit. Good stuff.
Dope af
Solid '90s alt rock.
Classic
Look at this nerd
Not really my thing. And its not that i dont like pop music there's just a bunch of other pop artists i prefer. Nothing really memorable here, Shake it Off is the most ear wormy song and its ok.
No.
Decent alt rock. Very '90s
Legendary. Also super influential for '90s west coast hip hop. No G-funk without P-funk.
I have no idea whats going on.
Maybe it would be higher if they just dropped all the vocals
Not really my thing but not bad.
Solid
F it, love me some pumpkins
Not sure how ive completely missed this but real solid '90s east coast hip hop.
Aight this thing doesnt need to tell me to listen to The Score. Absolute classic that has never left my rotation.
Dope
It would be a 5 if it had you know what on it.
I hate rating systems cuz i always change mine and compare too often ie. If so and so got a 3 then this isnt as good should get a 2 yadda yadda.. so from now on its gonna be 1- bad, 2- ok, 3- good, 4- great, 5- classic. This is a 2. Theres some good stuff and some really not good stuff.
I know shit about mysic so you can disregard my opinion but with my completely untrained ear I couldnt help but feel like some of this singing is REALLY bad. Im more familiar with the high pitched tight pants Bee Gees but this felt like a satirical Beatles spoof. Am I missing something? Is there some elaborate joke I'm missing. They sound like frogs.
Peak Eminem
Nerd
Weird hippy shit

One of the first albums i ever bought. Probably havent listened to in well over a decade. Never realized how Canadian it sounds.
Fantastic
At first i was like "oh no..." at its worst, lyrically it feels like bad showtunes but musically some of this fucking rips.
The band is funky as fuck but jesus does Anthony Keidis suck.
Kinda fun. Not a fan of the glam subgenre but this felt kinda different. Love the random ass use of horns.
Kinda corny and annoying
Very fun and silly
Honestly might be my favorite VU album or at least the one I revisit the most.
Honestly, giving this 4 stars on the strength of "Son of a Preacher Man" alone. This version is so fucking good.
It was ok. I listened to it yesterday and really cant recall a single thing about it so that should say a lot. I would have remembered if it was bad though.
Cowboy shit.
Shoutout to all Spotify peeps who can't listen to this one. Thoughts an prayers 🙏
Probably the album i've listened to the most. Absolute banger. The one i always recommend to people who wanna check out Zappa but might be apprehensive due to all the yellow snow, tower of powers, and cum. The perfect way to ease them into the weirdness.
The older i get the more i dig the more straight forward blues rock Doors. Bearded Morrison is best Morisson.
Ok, enjoyed this more than the last Nick Drake recommendation. And its short, actually listened to this twice.
Probably the best of all the "completely new to me" suggestions from this app. Definitely will revist.
High point is a Tenebre sample but that just makes me think "is this actully good or does the Tenebre score just fucking rip?"
Sometimes i'm not in the mood tonlisten to whatever they suggest and just listen to my own shit and then gotta play catch up with the albums i missed. That what i did with Tim Buckley a couple days ago and instead I listened to Thundercat's Drunk cuz its one of my faves and i listen tonit all the time so it was funny to see that Thundercat's Drunk was literally one of the albums i missed when I just happenes to be listening to it anyway. And I'm not even gonna count that listen, imma listen to it again right now cuz its that good.
Weird, and it got weirder as it went on. Good stuff.
I wish more people (or at least younger people) knew how dope Terry Kath was.
Outside of like wildly immature stuff there seems to be humor missing from a lot of music now. Like this was solid and also pretty funny moments.
Music for car commercials
The music they played before my little league games.
Definitely the favorite album of a white college student with dreds and black light posters in his dorm in the '90s.
Weird fun album
Edited review: the moment I heard they had an edit button this is immediately what I went back for. Bumping this from 3 to 5. Don't know if there is another band I've had more of a turn around on after a first listen. Love them now.
Revisited review: bumping this from 3 to 4.
Not good. (Thank God for the edit button! Moving this from 2 to 1. It always should have been 1 but for some strange reason I felt guilty but regretted it ever since. Finally I have righted a wrong.)
Morrissey is an asshole but I love The Smiths
I think i need to re-evaluate my ranking system. Ive been hesitant to hand out 1's but there seems like a huge gap between a 3 and a 4. If this is a 1 then so is that Lenny Kravits album.
Maybe I'm being generous because of nostalgia, this album was formative for me, but while I admit alot of the "nu-metal" I was into is cringe and hard to listen to now I can still throw this on an get into it so that has to count for something.
Scrolling back and somehow missed this one. Well any excuse to listen to this album is a good one.
Good but felt really short. Seemed it like was over right after I started. Listened to it again though.
Better than Beyonce. Come at me hive.
The first cd I ever bought. A classic.
Extra for that song from the Where the Wild Things Are trailer which was better than the actual movie.
I've been on a run of classics I've already am familiar with or stuff I'm not interested in. This feels like the first genuine discovery in a while. Just awesome.
Some solid singles
Classic
Loretta Lynn is cool, just not my particular brand of music. But it is nice checking out what I normally wouldn't listen to every once in awhile.
Sampling is tip notch and worth the listen for alone. But I find their voices so annoying.
Uh, I listened to this on Friday and now it's Monday and I have ZERO recollection of what this sounded like.
I stopped listening to Slipknot a while before this and while I'm probably not gonna get back into them, this had some solid tracks
Thank the lord they added an edit button! I don't know what I was thinking at the time of the original 3 rating and part of me wants to preserve that snapshot of time but I had rediscovered them some time later and absolutely LOVE this now.
As silly as it sounds, Matt Groening was right, it does take multiple listens until it just clicks. I've listened to this a bunch over the years and it's a favorite now. Loved reading all the takes from other unsuspecting listeners, they are not wrong lol.
Classic
Is this school? Why is this man trying to teach me?
Solid throw back rock n roll
I love Husker Du but like earlier Husker Du. Gimme Landspeed Record, Metal Circus, or Zen Arcade. They got more polished and leaned more alternative and that stuff is good but their aggressive stuff is GREAT.
It's been a while since one of these were from someone I never heard of and really blew me away. I would totally listen to this
Loveless is one of my favorite albums and anytime I listen to MBV I listen to that one. Always need to remind myself they got another pretty great album too.
Was this in the Departed? It should have been. Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly all owe this band, I think. Idk about when shit was formed and whatnot
I know music is subjective and shit but like I imagine the kinda person that doesn't rate this a 5 likes the smell of their own farts.
They just gave me a different MBV album a couple days ago and in that review I mentioned how I constantly listen to this album. Guess I'll be listening to it again. And a million times after, you don't need to tell me today's the day to listen to this.
Was gonna rate this a 2 which for me means "OK" but I had a headache and this made it worse.
Straight Outta Dickens
Solid album that showed everyone Dave Grohl was nowhere near finished after Nirvana.
Helter Skelter went so hard a bunch of people got murdered.
I don't like country but I like John Prine. The music itself is whatever but what he sings about is the kinda stuff I can get into. He seems like a cool dude.
Solid dad rock
Classic
This should probably be a 2 but nostalgia, eh?
Should probably give this a 1 for that godawful Light My Fire cover but some of the other stuff was ok.
I love The Smiths but never really listened to Morrissey solo. It's fine.
She definitely has a better voice than some of her contemporaries but this is not for me. And to be fair she says this almost immediately. "This is for my girls..."
This was certainly something. Not really my cup of tea but since it doesn't really sound like any of the other albums I've listened to from here, that keeps it from getting a 1.
This could go up or down a star. The music is great but those "white college kid rap vocals" sure are something. Sometimes it fits sometimes it really hinders some tracks.
I was enjoying it but it was over so fast
Any Wu-Tang solo album that came out in between 36 Chambers and Wu Tang Forever is a certified banger. They were untouchable on that run.
Hey its that one song you know from like movies or TV or commercials or whatever. Rest is decent too.
Weird even by Zappa standards
Y'all already gave me an XTC album like 3 days ago and I didn't give it a good rating then or any of the other times you suggested it. I'm starting to think this whole thing is an elaborate plan to get me to listen to XTC. PLEASE STOP.
Literally listened to this like earlier in the week cuz I'm always listening to it and don't need an excuse to listen to it but will gladly accept one. Here we go again.
Incredibly brave of this performer to release an album when you aren't very good at singing.
I always liked The Monkees cuz of the show and how camp it was but when you remove that and just listen to them it really is nothing but a wannabe Beatles and has very little to offer on it own musically.
Them: Here's 1001 Albums you should listen to before you die. Me: (praying for death so I don't have to listen to another electronic British album)
It was smart following up the worst song I've ever heard with that one recognizable song to try and make us forget. But I will never forget. It's terrible.
One of my intros to the Stones. Thank you Twisted Metal Black.
Never has funk been so dark, moody, and horny.
No idea what they saying but it was cool
Can't stand the singer but this still has plenty of earworms.
I love this album. Really raw and abrasive, just Kanye leaning into all the negative criticisms. Just owning it. It's all downhill from here though. It's a bummer what he is now. This is the "good" asshole Kanye, before he was the bigoted asshole Kanye. I miss this Kanye.
We let her get away with too much because of an accent and good production.
Better than the one that won the pulitzer
Singer sounds a bit like Elvis Costello, at least to my very dumb untrained ears
Fun
Fun
The music that plays during a dramatic scene in a teenager focused drama on the CW.
Also better than the one that won the Pulitzer
I don't know if this hits as well as it did when I was younger but it's a formative album for me so it feels wrong to not rate it like a classic. Weirdo circus music.
I used to be really into the whole numetal and numetal adjacent scene and the truth is a lot of this stuff doesn't hold up well at all. This kinda still slaps. It's way more raw than most of the overproduced studio metal coming out around this time. I'm gonna be generous.
Neptunes and Timbaland production carry this one far on early 2000s nostalgia.
It's not terrible but so incredibly bland. Insane that this is the music that drives an entire fanbase to be almost psychotics.
This really could go down a star depending on the voice, not sure howni feel about the singer but I'm being generous today.
He's not like an actual great singer but the voice is still iconic.
Really? Like I know 1001 is a lot but there's some incredible albums left off this list but we all have to be subjected to this cuz... idk whoever made this list felt like current music was underrepresented? Everyone knows rock attained perfection in 1974.
Ok, a couple albums ago I gave a newer album a 1. I didn't like it and stand by that. But I'm gonna do the hypocritical thing and give this album a 4. Does it deserve that? No, there's some cringey stuff that maybe doesn't hold up but it's a nostalgic banger that came out during my formative years. I'm not a critic, these ratings are how much I enjoyed it. It's not a classic by any stretch of the imagination and I don't know why I'm typing so much to justify this to no one in particular. Whatevs
This isn't my era of Green Day and I still think of this as "new Green Day" even though we are twice as far removed from this as this was from Dookie. Jesus Christ, I'm gonna die soon. Real solid pop punk record.
Mrs Robinson is a banger
They just love beating me over the head with my least favorite genre and idk, maybe it's working.
She's so cool
The amount of 1's I've given to female folk singers who kinda speak/sing mediocre poetry has challenged my worldview. Do I have some unconscious bias towards women? No, I just gave Blondie a 4. There's tons of women who make music that doesn't suck.
Honestly better than I thought it was gonna be. Pretty fun.
I usually listen while working so I'm not paying full attention but after the 17th reference to Lynyrd Skynyrd I'm like WTF is this? So I hit that Wikipedia button and ok it makes sense. I read a little more about the band and I get it, I appreciate it. Still maybe more interesting to read about than actually listen to.
I'd probably bump this up a star if it wasn't for the vocals (and to be clear it's not because they were in another language)
Fun
Bumping this a star cuz side B honestly slaps
We let people get away with murder just cuz we like their accent.
The older I get the more I enjoy blues-ey Doors over bohemian weirdo Doors. I'd go up another half a star for bearded Morrison.
Solid pop record with r&b flourishes but then she referred to her "fatty, daddy" and I feel dumber for listening. The lyrics didn't get better either (turn that cherry out)
Better than the last one but still just not for me
Not mine.
Hip hop producers eating off this album
As a Mets fan I just wanna say I miss Pete Alonso already and the season hasn't even started yet. Why'd we let this dude walk?
The harp is cool but not a fan of her voice at all.
Was gonna give it a 4 til that whisper song came on and made my skin crawl thru the headphones
Not my thing but the first and third song are bangers and wouldn't feel right rating anything with those 2 songs less
Don't Look Back in Anger makes me cry and I don't know why and it's been like this for a bit and it's a little concerning. One of the first albums I ever bought. Haters be damned.
