Perfectly captures the zeitgeist of a time I don't care to revisit...

Some good songs - classics like Holiday/Boulevard, American Idiot - but the songs in between were too long or uninteresting.

Punk Opera about the disillusionment of growing up in suburbia? Easy 5 stars. I listened to this album so hard the summer it came out that I spent the next 3 years hating on it. Once I went back and realized I had just overplayed it for myself, it went back into a moderated heavy rotation.

I'm dating myself here, but American Idiot is the first album I ever owned. There are legitimate criticisms that can be made about it - it's firmly rooted in the Bush era and hasn't aged particularly well; it's a whiny sort of pop-punk for white kids in the 'burbs - but none of that is enough to detract from my rose-tinted nostalgia. Even today, I find the album's pure sincerity a very charming break from the 2010s ever-present air of irony.

Not my favorite Green Day album.

I like their other records more. I know this was caught up in the hysteria of a rock opera but for the NEW MILLENNIUM, but I don't think it was quite as amazing as it was made out to be.

3.5 to be honest. Liked some of the songs more than I remember, I don’t care for the “rock opera” aspects as much as I used to. I could definitely pick out theme, but narrative is a bit of a stretch. While some of the movements on a few tracks were inspired, most just felt crammed together. It would have been better to make a couple of fleshed out 3.5/4 min songs than a 7.5 min song made up of two parts. Standouts are American Idiot and Jesus of Suburbia and various parts of other songs

i definitely had a phase where i liked their early stuff - fun, melodic punky stuff. at some point, i realized they'd really only written one song (i'm in love, and she doesn't know i exist), and that kinda did me in. this album was sort of a watered-down version of all of that. melodic enough, but ultimately pretty boring. plus i've come to think billie joe's a bit of a tool

I was pretty meh about this when it came out. Same 25ish years later

I definitely bought this album on the day it came out - I was 16. I was riding in the back seat of my friend's car listening to "Holiday" - we had it cranked and he was driving too fast trying to take a turn off 18th Ave - into the ditch we went! A fond memory. I get why some people don't like Green Day but they were such a big part of my formative years and I come back to their music often enough. I think this is their best album. "Jesus of Suburbia" is epic, I love that song. Rounding up to a 5.

Pop punks love politics. So edgy!

First encounter with Green Day was as an opener for Bad Religion, playing pretty straight ahead punk. Their transformation into more of a conventional alternative rock band was an odd one, though obviously it worked out for them. Listened to this album a lot in the day, although the lyrics increasingly strike me as pompous.

Of all the pop punk bands, I think Green Day is the only one I actually enjoy on some level. I've only heard Dookie through Nimrod before though. I've seen this album get alot of praise and I wanted to give it a 3 when I first started listening but as the album goes on I feel like it collapses under its own weight. I respect the ambition but it was a bit of a chore to get through.

I never got into Green Day, but they aren't bad per say. I can appreciate the punk opera concept and I think the album starts strong but then fizzes out, like Jon said. It's not bad, but not my thing. I did get a bit tired of it towards the end, probably won't listen to it by choice, lots of the songs were played so much on the radio, so that's my association.

Definitely heard this one. One of my favorites. Very cynical, and considered a sell out album by them, but, as a concept album/rock opera style, it’s great!

I have a hard time stepping back and not being judgy about this album and about Green Day. After years of feeling like they play poser punk and feeling like they were making political songs as part of a growing fad, rather than out of genuine concern for the current political climate. There's undeniably some great songwriting and the production quality is great.

Very good musicianship and a very cool approach, doing most of the songs as double feature/mashups that flow pretty seamlessly into one another. The hits are much better than some of the other tracks, but they all fit together pretty well.

It's fine, but not close to their best album (Dookie).

Was pretty much over Green Day when this album came out. But looking back it’s probably one of their best.

Tough. So much harder to listen to than anticipated. Just too much all the time. I also saw that E-boy was listening to Mac while I was listening to this and I really needed that antidote

Used to listen to this all the time back in the emo kid days. I still know every single word.

I was never interested in this album when it came out, but I heard the singles. They're better in the context of the album. Green Day can certainly write some catchy songs.

Probably my best Green Day album as well. Loved the first one but this one is just really good.

Was very excited to see this bad boy pop up. This was the album that introduced me to Green Day but I haven’t listened in forever. Very rewarding for us lyrics listeners ;) Kathleen Hanna should’ve sang Letterbomb though.

Look. I know the rating should be lower. But I fucking love this album. I love it. Its a no skip album for me. I remember loving it since I was four. So many great tunes. 9/10 F. T. : A tie between Holiday and Are we the Waiting. I can't choose among my children.

Nostalgia bomb. Awesome album, and the slow/fast song double features are pretty fun, I kind of forgot about that format

Nobody ever asked for 7, 8 and NINE minute green day songs. That being said some good individual tracks but not enough to save the whole piece.

Why on earth is the lame end of Green Day on this? This is a band that should never have tried to "grow up". 3/5.

Nope.... this type of grunge is just bad pop dressed up and sold to the disenfranchised.
