Only By The Night
Kings of LeonA middle of the road album with a handful of stand out tracks
A middle of the road album with a handful of stand out tracks
Obviously very guitar focused some interesting blend of Latin and guitar riffs. Fairly unmemorable
A very distinctive sound that’s Mark Knopfler’s great guitar work with the stand out track Sultans of Swing
A great blues album with a little country mix. Really enjoyed it.
I’ve always thought Prince was overrated, this did nothing to change my mind.
Really enjoyed this album. The Latin/samba beats were great. Even enjoyed by my Son , which is quite the endorsement apparently!!
They can certainly play their instruments fast and shout a lot. The slower tracks were better I thought but overall sounded like a lot of other American guitar/drum bands. It was ok at best for me.
This is a great album with obviously 2 standout tracks. Iggy Pop has lived a life for at least 3 people so it’s quite something he’s still broadcasting on 6Music.
Enjoyed this album. Very similar sound to many 60s groups. Great use of the organ. Couple of stand out tracks
Listened to this and quite enjoyed it. British folk often overshadowed by American folk.
Very meditative but not my thing.
EVH can certainly play guitar and he never misses an opportunity to demonstrate. A skilled musician but fairly forgettable album I’m afraid
There’s no mistaking Michael Stipe’s vocals. Don’t know about my religion , but I was definitely losing something here. Just warming up for their real breakout album I guess.
One of the best known UK ska bands , without which they’d be no Madness. Some great songs on this album.
Left me thinking I was listening to Joy Division, so much so that my ears pricked up and I thought this has got better - it had finished in fact and Spotify played JD She’s lost Control. Very unforgettable I’m afraid
Not too sure where to begin , not sure I wish it had. A long 38 minutes of which most was an assault on the senses. Nope
Really great album. Loved it
Reminded me a lot of Nick Drake at times. That in itself should have won me over but it was quite bland
Don’t mind a bit of Country but can equally see why the arrival of Rock ‘n Roll was a breath of fresh air !
Some stand out tracks that have stood the test of time but overall, fairly samey. Love piano in tracks and Oliver’s Army has that and really adds something
I enjoyed this but probably couldn’t tell you much about it today.
To be fair , I quite enjoyed this. I have on good authority that there are better albums by The Smiths. Morrisey is a very morose singer and Johnny Marr is a great guitarist
Really enjoyed this album. Couple of standout tracks.
I’ve always enjoyed Talking Heads. They experiment with different sounds and this album is no exception. The stand out Once in a Lifetime sounds just as good now as at release. I’ve seen David Byrne live and it was an amazing experience, he’s always experimenting with new ideas. Great album
Ah , a bit of disco courtesy of Niles Rodgers. Some cracking tunes , heavily sampled over the years. We are Family has been spoiled by adverts unfortunately. Great
Alex Turner has such a distinctive voice and style. It was hard to not feel I was listening to the Arctic Monkeys. Enjoyable but not outstanding
Great to hear some familiar tunes stripped back and some great covers. It’s hard to better Bowie , but in this case …. Perhaps the pinnacle of the MTV unplugged?
There’s no doubt some fantastic Motown songs but scattered across several artists. This album was a bit of a departure from the usual sound and sometimes benefitted from that. Would I listen again , perhaps after lots of others first
Bjork is quirky and unique really. Probably a little Marmite. This is an amazing album with the obvious stand out tracks all being singles. She has a really strong vocal and style. Really enjoyed this
The French have always had a high opinion of their food , fashion and art. Serge Gainsbourg has always struck me as an artist who makes music , rather than a musician first. This felt like it was trying to be high brow. That said , did quite enjoy it.
Enjoyed this. Classic 60s sound. My Back Pages a standout
A great album and the influences on others clear to hear
Yeah , never really been a fan of the Beastie Boys. Seemed to be playing at being gangsters and very shouty. Not for me
Enjoyed this. Much more interesting than the more commercialised stuff they did
I loved this. Randy Newman has such a lovely way of telling a story in what sounds simple but is much more intense when focused in on the words. Coupled with the piano makes for sensational listening. A long relationship with Pixar has exposed him to a new and younger audience but he’s been writing like this for years. Covered by many artists. Nina Simone’s version of Baltimore is very powerful
Some voices are so distinctive that after a few words , Elvis Costello is one of those. All a bit samey. Very mid
Can’t deny the stand out first track. The rest felt a bit samey. Ok but not great
Some great songs , not too many as my Son would describe “ soul crushing “ An evolution in their sound.
Yeah , wasn’t aware of these when they released it , wish that was still the case. Time I’ll never get back
Great album. Mix of folk and country. Will seek out other albums of theirs
Obviously a very 60s sound. Some quite good covers but nothing that really grabbed me
Really great , strong voice and piano. An influential musician and great music
Really enjoyed this. It’s a musical soundscape with some great tracks
Some interesting stuff but overall very angsty. Ideal for a teenager in turmoil
Great album. Peter Gabriel has always done interesting stuff. Games without Frontiers being the standout. Although not on this album he’s done arguably the best duet ever with Kate Bush.
Some great tracks and a very distinctive sound. Brian Wilson was certainly one of a kind
This reminded me a bit of Status Quo , Dad rock. Nothing offence , middle of the road with some catchy melodies.
So , I’m going to start by separating the art from the artist ; This is without a doubt a great album with some tracks that still sound as fresh today as when released. Others sound like the 80s. An album that coincided with the advent of music videos which no doubt helped propel this album skywards up the charts. Game changing stuff. I will caveat that MJs grunts and crotch grabbing was unnecessary!!
Some classic tunes but definitely from an era. The 808 drum machine has no doubt been superseded many times but was a classic of its time. Not an album to just pop on but enjoyable nonetheless
Enjoyed this. Strong vocals and some great tracks
Dreary C&W.
Ella Fitzgerald has an amazing voice and anything she sings sounds awesome. Loved this album listened all 3 hours plus
Quite shouty , seemed to be similar themed and all melded into one. Good sample of Labi Siffre but that’s about it
Better than I expected. Was always going to be guitar heavy.not sure when I’d listen to an album like this ?
Really enjoyed this. Stand out track for me was , We’re going to be friends. Lyrics absolutely sum up the experience of making friends at school , and here we all are !!
Very distinctive sound and voice. Works better for some tunes. I imagine this was a breath of fresh air when first released!!
He’s a distinct voice and that’s always a tricky thing for a soloist before or after being in a band. Unless there’s a big shift in musical style. Precursor for Whitestripes. Enjoyed it
I like Kendrick Lamar but realise I’m not his target demographic 😂 Enjoyed this
Enjoyed this. Lots of variety and experimenting with styles. Solsbury Hill stills sounds great today
An outstanding album with standout evocative tracks that are just as good today as ever.
Party Fears Two is a great song. Alas it doesn’t make an album though. Bland but for the breakout song
Never enjoyed music like this. Guitars too heavy , vocals too shouty. Not for me
Some really good songs with London Calling being the obvious stand out.
Great. Edgy at times , great vocals and a couple of breakout tunes
Not sure much to say. Very forgettable
Fantastic album with lots of great tracks
Nothing memorable at all. With a name like that , I’d have released a song called Summer of 68 etc , etc.
Yeah , bit mixed really , some good tunes , some average. Struggle with the Brothers appearing to be total knobheads and there’s definitely a point lost for that !!
Brilliant 5 stars
Possibly in danger of like some of the tracks were going to roll into - It’s like that but enjoyed it. Very influential group
I enjoyed this. Bit of filler in the middle but lots of interesting stuff. Loved Norwegian Wood version.
A great album. Some groups churn out the same sound. Radiohead went from a guitar band to experimenting with sound to great affect
I really liked this album. A classic hip hop example that’s influenced so many that have come after
Really like this laid back album
Interesting album. Some fun tracks whilst others felt like I was listening to an episode of Narcos.
Agnostic about this
Strong vocals and great songs. Really enjoyed listening. The album is as old as us , but worn a lot better !!
Kate Bush can be quite divisive but I think she’s great. A unique artist with a distinctive sound and not afraid to experiment
Agnostic
An absolute classic that sounds as good today as first released. Everyone knows the backstory which helps explain the songs and their meanings. A classic
Going full speed into Jackie is a bold opener. Old style crooner , some tunes better than others
Brilliant.
Standout hits are that for a reason but lots of filler.
Take it Easy is a great tune but the rest was fairly bland filler
Mid
Really enjoyed this. Jazz is very Marmite for some people. Miles Davis is extraordinary though.
I like Rod’s voice. Works better for some songs better than others. Does he support Celtic , difficult to tell 🤔🙄
