Sounds like a Subpop punk album. Good stuff. 9/10 chance my next existential crisis will have a Subpup album in the background.

Another one I've heard of but probably never listened to. The first few tracks and the last one were a lot of fun. I'll return to those for sure. It reminds me of Sponge and Morphine.

These "important" bands never really do it for me. I guess this is considered the beginning of grunge, but I just didn't hear many songs that stood out to me. Wasn't bad at all but not that good either.

There’s the grunge!

Got a Nirvana sound for sure. I like their whole vibe. They seem like a fun band with a great sense of reality around them. They also sound a little like Pearl Jam. That Seattle Grunge scene was remarkable.

I'm not sure "charming" is the adjective that comes to mind with this album, but it does have an exuberant, fun garage band feel without ever becoming unlistenable. I like the fast, edgy "Thorn." Not too many songs stand out for me, though. I was going to remark that the lyrics as a whole were pretty bland, but then I got to the verse about "Driving reckless in your Pinto/full tank of gas" which made me smile real big, but I didn't find many other moments like that. I liked the look into early Seattle grunge. I liked it more than I thought I would (and probably more than I would have in 1991). I didn't like it enough to listen to 15 bonus tracks.

Lots of energy. I would guess that they’d put on a rambunctious live show. For just listening, I was not all that captivated though.

As a Seattle-ite, I'm glad I've now listened to a Mudhoney album. I was solidly...whelmed. I didn't want to leave the room because of it or anything but I'm not in a big rush to listen again. I did listen to it twice: once on headphones, mostly just paying attention to the music, and again on speakers while doing other things. I liked it better the second time. As my sole focus, there wasn't much there that caught my interest, nothing particularly unusual or catchy or moving. But while I was doing other things (making breakfast, answering emails), I found myself bopping around a bit to it. That's gonna elevate it from a 2 to a 3 for me. Thanks, though, Mudhoney for saving Sub Pop.

I haven't listened to Mudhoney before. They are somewhat similar to some of the grunge bands I have listened to, with stronger punk influences. I liked it well enough, and there was some good playing going on, but it never really grabbed me. I liked the guitar solo in “Thorn”. “Fuzzgun ‘91” would be great for a grunge beach movie. “Pokin’ Around” was my favorite song - the harmonica was a welcome addition. I don't know if I would have liked this album more if I had listened to it when it was released. Today, I didn’t mind listening to EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FUDGE, but I can't say I'm very motivated to do so again.

I'd like to hear this remastered. Full-blown heavy metal (am I right?) with this late 80s sound. Maybe a bit too monotonous, I'd like to hear more space between the sounds

Sounds like yet another punk rock simplistic power chords and screaming record. I want to see the merit in this kind of music, but I just don’t. 2 stars cause it at least has some point to it, I just don’t see anything that stands out or is that significant whatsoever. I can play power chords and scream about my tortured soul too, why aren’t I on the list?

Grungy, noisy early alt rock. Not bad but not something i would listen to again, would rather put on Nirvana for sure.

Oh, grunge. I knew the band name - knew the era, but not the style or the quality. Now I do.

I feel like this one isn't as interesting as previous Mudhoney albums, but the influence on Nirvana is undeniable. There is such a raw energy here, the shift in tone between songs is really enjoyable and overall I have definitely enjoyed the experience of listening to it.

Sounds like a load of songs that didn’t quite make the Tony Hawks soundtrack.

This is a distinct difference from the hair metal rock that came before it. I wouldn't call this album great but it was an okay listen.

I love grunge but Mudhoney is at the crappy end of it imo. Yeah I know they were practically the first grunge band, but they lean too heavily into the alternative art rock DIY garage band stuff where I prefer my grunge to sound like AIC and Soundgarden. I've heard this album a few times, it kinda just exists. It's not horrible, but it's not actually good and I wouldn't listen to it for fun. Seems to be propelled by reputation alone. 2/5.

This album has had my dick hanging out the back of it since day one. It still gets me hard, unlike your mum.

Enjoyable fudge packing. If I was to describe this as a footballer, it would be Marco Reus.

One of my favorite bands... hell, at times they are my absolute favorite. Great band to see live. This is a classic in my book, just got the 30th anniversary version of this on vinyl. Glad to see it here on the list. These guys are still cranking out great stuff. I'd argue their last 3 records (The Lucky Ones, Vanishing Point, Digital Garbage) are as good as (and maybe better than) anything they've ever put out. Check them out too.

Works best when it explores the fray between indie arrangements and grungier instrumentation, unfortunately leans too hard into the latter on most tracks and becomes a bit homogenous and unremarkable throughout

It started off fine. It got noisy and unbearable at times in the middle but got better towards the end. I feel like this album lacks a bit of identity. Its genre is listed as grunge, but it doesn't feel like grunge sometimes. I wasn't expecting a harmonica to be featured, but it was and it kinda slapped, all things considered. But again, not really grunge at points. Favorite track: Pokin' Around

I wrote this whole thing about how this is just another below average grunge band from the 90s. Honestly, I don't have the energy. This is fine. It's better than Pearl Jam, but that is an incredibly low bar. Some of the songs are fine, but I really just don't care for it. Highlight: 6.

5/10. They seem oddly self aware about song length. Like all of the songs that extended much longer than 2 minutes did so because they were a bit better than the rest of the album. Still pretty meh from where I'm standing though.

It was loud but I enjoyed the eclectic rock sound over a lot of other grunge I’ve heard. 7

I have loved this album since it came out!

Very Garage-y aesthetic. Let It Slide is good. The low recording quality makes all of the songs sound exactly the same. Shoot The Moon is more my speed, but Move Out was good too. The harmonica does a lot to add something bright and cutting with everything else being fuzzed out, like in Pokin' Around.

Did not like.

I like the heavy guitar rock instrumentals. Vocals are average and expected from an early 90s record. There are some highlights in the record where the instrumentals intertwine with the vocals very fluidly however. Lyrical substance is questionable.

Very listenable except for one song with snoring sounds in the middle. Sound is more late 90s indie, although can hear more classic early 90s seattle grunge too.

Stort plus för albumets omslag, den var ju riktigt fräsig. När det gäller musiken blir det ganska ofta lite för skrikigt och ett snäpp för flippat. Jag märkte dock under lyssningens gång att dom hade en del fina riffs som lyfte låtarna något. Bäst: "Broken hands"

i think they broke ground with some of the lyrics and the instrumentation was usually interesting. southern grunge vibes.

First time listening: 2/14 songs liked For an album named after the pneumatic device for note naming, they really don't keep to their conventions. Super atonality on a wide variety of tracks, and extremely slow grunge. My god, not my thing. No songs saved.

You can hear the influences: Iggy Pop, a bit of Sabbath, garage, punk and so forth. But the deliberately muddy lo-fi production is probably more of a hindrance than a help. I enjoyed parts of this, but found it to be a bit of slog overall.

Very energetic album that in the right mood is perfect to keep your head bopping. A lot of fun songs without any that really stood out, just a solid and consistent album.

It's a solid-to-good grunge album to listen to, but some of the studio decisions kind of baffle me. Why is there an acoustic guitar only on the right channel on Broken Hands? Why is there a harmonica on Pokin' Around?

There's a place in time for this kind of music. Right now it just sounds incredibly low effort

Not a big grunge fan but I can see where this album would have been influential on the grunge scene. Has a bit of 60s garage feel and feels like a bridge between that and later Grunge scene. Do like Good Enough and a few of the slower grooves.

I've never been into grunge, but I can appreciate some of the influences on the members of Mudhoney, like the Stooges' Iggy Pop. Unfortunately, this evolution of punk on this record isn't that impressive. It's not humorous, energetic and doesn't make me feel much. Rating 2/5

This album was not my idea of a good time. I felt like I was grasping for straws of things to hold onto. And maybe part of it is the outsize influence this kind of music has had on terrible bar bands I've had the misfortune of playing with, but this just felt like a major slog to me. Kind of a stoner-grunge mashup. I know grunge was a major moment in the early 90s, but I'd much rather be listening to almost any other emergent contemporary music scene (shoegaze, indie, hip hop, Britpop) instead. Favourite track: "Move Out"

I had an odd thought while listening to Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge: on a couple of cuts (Good Enough, Something So Clear), the band reminds me of Velvet Underground. Obviously, the two bands are from completely different genres, but the guitar strumming is straight up Lou Reed, and the drumming has the single (and simple) minded intensity of Maureen Tucker. Considering this album is considered a classic, it's disappointing. You have to wait 5 songs until you get to a solid tune like Into The Drink. Up until then, the tunes are so basic as to be borderline insulting. I mean, primitivism can be legitimate, but there are limits, at least for me. Unfortunately, Mudhoney is the sort of band that lives and dies on individual songs. They don't have the requisite musicianship to carry them through marginal material. The lead guitarist can't play a lick, and he doesn't have great ears either, so his attempts at artful noise fall flat. I actually like grunge, but this is pretty weak.

I've been generous with grades for genres I don't normally listen to and so this 1.5 gets rounded up by the skin of its teeth. If future grunge albums sound like this they will not be so lucky.

Heavvvyyy 90s fuzz-rock with some pretty good hooks. It's like if the Eels were more angry than sad and feels very much like the early 90s while somehow riding the wave of more modern (2010s) sound that makes it relatively timeless. Still, it's not entirely my style

This is so quintessentially grunge I could practically feel my clothes turning plaid as I listened. I was very into the whole grunge thing at the time, and hearing this now is both nostalgic and yet also feels rather cliched. Once you put aside that it isn't a parody, it came before the cliche, then it's all quite enjoyable.

Nota a bad punk album but I think there are better ones that could be included here.

They get labeled as grunge because they're a Seattle band using heavy distortion in 1991, but there are more punk elements here than anything: an abundance of two-minute songs, shouty repetitive choruses, a lead singer who can't carry a tune, and purposefully mediocre production quality (because using low quality tape totally owned those studios, man). I vacillated between being impressed by the balls on these guys and annoyed by this album's existence, which was probably the point. Best track: Good Enough

Grudge

Grungy, scuzzy, blues. Sometimes out of its goddamn mind, but overall a pretty cool look as to what was going on in 91. Favorite tracks: "Shoot the Moon", "Love Gun 91", "Check-out Time"
