Subtly crushing.

Such a beautiful album. This could easily be a 4.5 and I think with a few more listens it could nudge it's way into a 5. Fave track: Ghosteen Speaks.

I like Nick Cave a lot but this was (perhaps understandably) a bit one note, and I think you probably have to be in exactly the right frame of mind to be receptive to it. Having said that, though, it's still evidently a strong album. I look forwards to listening to it again when I'm in the right mood! Fave track - "Ghosteen Speaks", I think. "Fireflies" and "Hollywood" were also good...

I really liked this for some reason. I thought it was hauntingly mellow for the most part. Another one where it's on track 4 for the second time before I realise it's looped already and I'm listening to the same thing I've already heard. Yeah, really flows well this one.

Dude sucks bad. Not sure how him or Waits have a career.

A beautiful, haunting album - you can hear everything that's been poured into it and it's heartbreaking.

Like wtf, no way this is one of the 1001 albums you MUST listen to.... from what I can see, this band's best albums were in the 90s, this is a 2019 album... and you are trying to tell me it's a classic, a quintessential album. What the fuck is this list.

I really enjoyed the ambient sounds on this record. I'm sure a lot of the meaning and depth behind the album are held in the lyrics, but it lost me at some point, and I was satisfied by the music. Nice listen

Nick Cave is a story teller seemingly out of time. His lyrics are sooooo cryptic. "And I slid my little songs out from under you" is a good line. This is a concept album that has well and truely flown right over my head. I like Nick Cave's voice and the way he delivers his words. will have to come back to.

Talky music

Having not been bothered by Nick Cave's output post '97, I had never listened to a single not off this. I was actually pleasantly surprised. It is the most focused I have heard Nick Cave since the Good Son. There are some nice subtle elements on here, Warren Ellis managing to accompany rather than dominate the sound. The only negative is I found it a bit over long especially the last track that felt like an afterthought rather than the epic it wanted to be

Only familiar with Nick Cave via "Red Right Hand" from Peaky Blinders. First 2 songs are way more ethereal than expected, but given the album cover maybe I should have expected that. A lot of the songs have an almost ambient quality to them and with Nick Cave's powerful voice I didn't see how a whole album could work like this but it's good. Not so much "listen to these songs in your free time" type music but as a project itself the album is enjoyable.

We'll executed but it's just not quite my thing. I did enjoy some of the melodies though.

Haunting and haunted. Hard to imagine a more intense process of turning grief into art.

Grim, gorgeous and powerful. Stylewise, it’s art song in the mode of John Cale, with Leonard Cohen gravitas, and some vague echoes (for me) of The Final Cut. Hard to imagine what he would have been dealing with emotionally. 4.1 > 4

Does this really need to be on here?… The album opens with spinning song It is a spoken word track over a droning electronic noise, certainly interesting and a good choice for track one but it ain’t a favourite. I thought nick cave done a little bit of singing and not just talking? Well guess I’am wrong as bright horses is just like the first sonic but with backing singers and good ambient piano work. Okay the album’s evolved a little bit as waiting for you has cave singing and I know he’s not the best vocalist but this was a nice thing to hear. The piano in this track is also more frequent so I hope that occurs more with time. Night raid is a step back in quality in my opinion as he’s gone back to just talking at your ears ( well, for the most part) and it’s backed by an instrumental akin to if Radiohead’s treefingers was slightly more rhythmic actually the only pleasantry from this song are the backing singers so yeah not my cuppa tea so far. Surprisingly, I actually really like sun forest it contains a mix of cave speaking and singing over one of the best ambient noises I’ve ever herd but that noise only works across its time length because of the piano. The last minute seems to be like a hidden track of sorts and It just adds nothing. Galleon ship is also one of the better songs, it’s a slightly darker and gloomier song with probably the most singing from cave in the whole album. The creepy backing vocals also add a touch of greatness missing from the album. Ghosteen speaks has another set of the best instrumentals in the whole album and cave is singing which is good but it’s just too repetitive and being ambient music that isn’t really meant as much for the foreground of the mind this music is getting repetitive. The first act of the album ends with leviathan another repetitive one but still one of the albums best songs by a country mile having a sound akin to being submerged in the deep blue sea. Ghosteen would be the album’s best song if it wasn’t for the 12:10 time stamp that isn’t really filled with much. But it’s good background music. And Nick went back to just talking as now for one of the worst songs on the album, fireflies it’s just boring and feels longer than the two overblown epics either side of it. Hollywood is a 14 minute long epic and a grand/ satisfying conclusion to the album this song isn’t one of my favourites due to the time length but for people who are good with long pieces like this there is something to really enjoy! This album reminds me of if Radiohead's kid A was long, dragged out and sung by nick cave; where’s my red right hand at? Oh yeah the album with that song wasn’t even in the book.

Ja bi to zvao trilogija. Push the Sky Away - Skeleton Tree - Ghosteen, dakle meni najdraža era Nick Cavea. Najtužnija, ali koliko je tužno - toliko je lijepo. Bio sam 2019. na njihovom koncertu, čuo sam predivne pjesme sa PtSA i Skeleton Tree, i sada se nadam da ću neke pjesme i s ovog albuma čut tipa: Bright Horses, Night Raid, Spinning Song, Sun Forest (najdivniji naziv) zapravo može i cijela A strana.

Really? Of all the Nick Cave albums?? Very sorry for his loss, but this may be my least favorite of his mightily impressive oeuvre.

Nick Cave is up there with Tom Waits and Bruce Springsteen as the great story tellers of rock n roll.

According to Wiki this album was pretty hyped three years ago. As I hardly listen to contemporary music, I haven't heard of it before. The individual tracks sound quite good in themselves, but they're not really engaging enough to fully capture my interest.

Wow. To call this music doesn't do it justice. To call it a work of art doesn't do it justice. The way that the album digs into the depths of grief is so powerful. It's heartbreaking, but in a way that elevates the experience to connect to a deeper humanity. Compared to some of his other work, this takes what's best and leaves what is "Nick Cave."

This is so slow and yieldingly bleak sounding that it will require many more - full concentration - listening sessions if I am ever going to have its pleasures revealed to me. Not enough evidence after two listens to say that it will ever merit more than 2.5 stars

Mooie plaat voor zondagmorgen, maar eigenlijk vind ik Let love In een geslaagder werk van hem.

Mooi hoor, vooral de eerste paar tracks zijn schitterend. Je moet er wel een beetje voor in de stemming zijn, en erg opbeurend is het allemaal niet, maar zeker de moeite waard!

quite dreamlike and peaceful. good music to dissociate to. perfectly produced but by halfway through it had reeeally started to drag on. This album might be better if you classify it as "poetry" rather than "music" I was feeling 3 about halfway through, by the end it was a 2.

Never heard of Nick Cave before starting this project, now I've heard a couple of his albums and I think I'm a fan. Love the sound, style and music. 3/5 for now because I need to hear more of it.

Not my favorite Nick Cave Album

Overall was an ok album. It felt churchy quite a bit but his voice is very soothing. Don’t no if I would opt to listen to it again

Beautiful composition and instrumentation. Didn't impress me a ton at first, but after reading some background and listening a second time, the vocal performances and lyrics are pretty devastating. It's not something I'd put on for myself, but a solid record otherwise.

Somber album, but very pretty. I thought I'd get bored and I may have if I listened in one sitting, but over a couple sittings, I quite liked it.

It's beautiful and the lyrics are fantastic, especially Bright Horses, but I must admit that I have a hard time sitting through over an hour of this kind of somber, more ambient style music. I've heard the constant praise of Nick Cave but never given him a proper shot before now, but this wasn't the one to transform me into a Cave-stan unfortunately. Far from bad but just didn't fully grab me. I've heard he has more rock-focused music though that I'm looking forward to dive into sometime.

Nick Cave is an artist who I think has never really missed, but I’ll admit that I was surprised that this was chosen for this collection. It kind of stinks of recency bias, especially if the (imo) stronger and tighter Skeleton Tree isn’t here as well. But this is another good one obviously, and it has Cave’s traditionally exceptional hook for melody and haunting beauty. But the production is a little hollow at the same time. Again, I think Skeleton Key did everything better, but I still have a good time with this. B

I never got into Nick Cave. No reason, just didn’t. Yet, having listened to a number of projects highly influenced by his work, I kinda knew what I was getting into, but I didn’t expect to like it quite this much. I found myself hinging on his every word until I realized this was getting in the way of some fascinating and still almost transitory arrangements that can drift by unnoticed (in the best way possible). I adore the purpose in this kind of minimalism, where creative decisions can demand attention as much as they are asking to be ignored. Ghosteen feels very Bowie-esque to me (in particular his later work), the kind of self-aware art rock that’s at its best when it’s fully committing to the concept. Here, a somber, lonely, reflective foray finds moments of peace along the journey, and still I’m wondering wtf happened to this guy? What’s all this introspection about? I can see this maybe like being “his thing” but I’m curious enough to find out. Cool record. 3.5

Goddamn it this album has to come with a trigger warning. This may be the saddest thing I've ever heard. His telling of heart-wrenching stories paired with the melancholy music is too much. And his VOICE. It SOUNDS like he's in pain. Wow. Need a pick me up. I'm putting Graceland on again.

Quite beautiful! It was lovely to have on in the background while working. There are some deep songs here, and it's definitely worth a re-listen when I'm not multitasking.

I am casually familiar with Nick Cave and his hauntingly sad vocals, but this album somehow seems even more matched for it than what I've previous heard from their discography. The song crafting on this album is undeniable; each song evokes a deep, emotional story. The ambient music techniques used on this album add to the haunting quality, but also make it a fairly peaceful listen. A very unique, moving album that almost feels as if it was intended to be religious. I admittedly wouldn't be able to listen to this often, but I'm glad for the opportunity to experience this.

Phew. That was surprisingly heavy. And really really good. Very far from the stylistic vibe I expected from Nick Cave.

I'd heard lots of praise for this in recent years and it was pretty good. Will definitely be spinning again. Very synth heavy in places and it's almost like a post-rock album at times

Wow

I like Nick Cave. I really love Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus - one of my favorite albums. And I also really liked the Grinderman albums and Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! - great stuff. But he kinda lost me after that. Push the Sky Away was ok but with every subsequent release his records seem to get slower and more ambient. This is not terrible by any means. He's still got a cool voice and the music is interesting and haunting. With enough listens and the right mind space I could see myself really getting into this record. But I'm rarely in the mind space for this kind of haunting/depressing music. I often listen to music while working and this music just kind fades into the background for me. I think this is the kind of music that demands more from the listener.

Why are there so many Nick Cave albums on this list? This is nearly impossible to listen to.

Never listened to Nick Cave before. Have heard his name here and there. This was my first time listening. It's okay.. but Scott Walker did it better. I did some research and found that Nick Cave was heavily inspired by Scott Walker and I 100% believe it.

Much like some people think cilantro (corriander) tastes like soap, and others don't have an internal voice, I think I was born with something that prevents me from enjoying bands like this, Tom Waits and most of Leonard Cohen's work. The tracks were sleepy and the lyrics felt so packed that their density shrouded their meaning. I'm sure there are millions of people, for whom this is exactly what they are looking for, but I just couldn't connect with it. I couldn't even power through the whole album. I don't know why, but I feel like I'm letting someone down.

Having only listened to one other Nick Cave album (that being Henry's Dream), I wasn't sure what to expect here having heard it goes in a completely new direction. What I ended up finding was a haunting, yet beautiful record dealing with the subjects of life and death, and all that surrounds it. Not something to represent all of his previous work, but a great listen nonetheless. Favorites: "Spinning Song", "Sun Forest", "Ghosteen"

The instrumentals are beautiful. I sort of wish that this album was fully instrumental, and that the lyrics were just some poems to be read at your own pace while listening or something. At the beginning I was like "Ugh, I don't want to listen to this slow boring music for an hour", but it really won me over.

Did not like much. Some songs have great lyrics, Nick Cave’s chords are moving in Bright Horses, but don’t really enjoy it much even on the second listen

A bit repetitive.

Niemals hätte ich dieses Album ganz durchgehört normalerweise. Aber es hat mich während der Eintönigkeit der Arbeit extrem in seinen hypnotischen Bann gezogen und teilweise sogar emotional berührt. Ich mochte die Verbindung aus gesprochener Lyrik, dramatisch gesungenen Passagen und dem experimentellen Einsatz der Instrumente. Wahnsinnig gut produziert, ABER: Kein Album für jeden Tag. Das muss einen in der richtigen Stimmung treffen.

First time listen on this one, like Nick and the seeds generally but don't particularly like ambient music. But this is different, had never noticed the link between Cave and another hero of mine Leonard Cohen, but the connections are undeniable on this album. Beautiful songs throughout. Really Liked "Galleon Ship" and "Hollywood" as standout tracks. Amazing that this isn't all about the death of Nick's son Arthur. The songs are so darkly beautiful throughout, his usual collaborator Warren Ellis obviously influential in the Synth accompaniment.

Brilliant, moving, heart-breaking at points, but also with an eye on recovery and the future. One of the most astounding and memorable pieces of music I have heard in a very long time.

Really awkward experience.

If you’re looking for something fun and upbeat ‘Ghosteen’ isn’t the album for you. It’s the sound of a father’s grief for his dead son. It’s harrowing and unbelievably sad, yet cathartic and…wonderful. Production is minimal and sparse, but immersive and as interesting as any ambient album going around. I suspect that over time and repeated exposure ‘Ghosteen’ will become one of my all-time faves.

Really good album. Lots of awesome instrumentals and the vocals pair really perfectly to create a fantastical, ethereal experience. Love it.

Tough one to rank. I prefer Cave's rockers to his more somber work, but this is easily his best somber album. Haunting and beautiful.

Very insightful and meditative, great minimalistic sound. Good inclusion for 2019. Already 2 albums from last update!

I listened to this in the background while i was working and didn't pay loads of attention. However it was soothing with lush instrumentation. I like Nick Cave but not enough to listen to him regularly.
